Leonard Peterat’s 80th celebrated in Mile Zero
The birthday was no “surprise!” affair - with the 80th party advertised in the community.
“There’s no way we would have
been able to plan this to surprise him,” said a relative Saturday.
Family members, and friends travelled from throughout the
party.

Pouce Coupe addictions centre project continues
Rob Brown editor@dcdn.ca
In the future – if someone is picked up intoxicated –instead of the hospital, or the cells of the ‘drunk tank’ – they could soon be taken to North Wind Wellness Centre in Pouce Coupe.
Isaac Hernandez with NWWC, the longproposed addictions treatment centre in Pouce Coupe, provided Dawson Creek city councillors with an update on the project Monday.
The $20 million centre has been designed to meet an increased need for early intervention, treatment, and assisted recovery housing services.
Hernandez says the new facility is expected to have 10 early recovery beds, 10 treatment recovery housing beds, 30 plus supportive housing studio apartments, and a recovery community centre. Hernandez says while the future goal is to have 120 units – the project is aiming for 60 to begin with.
A May 2022 open house for the centre held in Pouce Coupe saw low attendance.
“(For clients stay of) two weeks or whatever time is necessary, nurses, elders, and councillors and more will work with them, then they moved to treatment centre area,” he said today.
Dawson Creek councillor Charlie Parslow noted the partnerships the project is fostering with Northern Lights College. He acknowledged the project has been in the works for more than a decade.
“I like this partnership with the college,” said Parslow asking for programs to create qualified staff to work at the facility.
Their current centre has been operating since 1996, a 10-bed facility in Farmington, providing
six weeks of in-patient addictions treatment programming.
In May 2019, the call came in the Pouce Coupe fire department the Peace Haven building burning to the ground. Firefighters stopped spread of the fire to portions of building and contained the fire –keeping an eye on the blaze for the next day.
Come of 2021remediation and clean up work of the location was begun.

YMCA expands child care services
Rob Brown editor@dcdn.ca
Opening on March 1 - the YMCA Tumbler Ridge School Age Child Care will offer 20 schoolage child care spaces and will be located at Tumbler Ridge Elementary.
There are options for Before and After School Care, Before School Care Only or After School Care Only, with hours of operation running 6:30am to school start and school dismissal to 5:30pm. The centre will operate full days on NonInstructional School Days and school closures including spring break (March 20-31).
“School District 59 is excited to partner with the YMCA to offer before and after school care at Tumbler Ridge Elementary,” said Christy Fennell, School District #59 Superintendent in a statement.
“This opportunity provides families with accessible child care at their own community school. This opening will be the district’s fourth
before and after school care program created in the last four years, and we appreciate the effort the YMCA has put into this partnership to support us on our journey of offering more child care spaces in all regions of our district.”
In December 2022, YMCA of Northern BC— now YMCA BC after officially amalgamating with two other YMCAs earlier this year—worked in partnership with the Tumbler Ridge Children’s Centre to begin operating the YMCA Tumbler Ridge Care and Learning Centre. This new schoolage child care centre builds upon the important services provided by the learning centre and the shared commitment between School District #59 and the YMCA to provide children and families with every opportunity to thrive.
“The YMCA knows the value in providing children with a welcoming and inclusive space where they explore, develop relationships and have fun with their peers,” said Amanda Alexander, Vice President, Northern BC, YMCA BC. “

Suspect in custody after Chetwynd death
Rob Brown editor@dcdn.ca
A suspect has been taken into custody after Chetwynd RCMP responded to reports of a deceased person in a home.
On February 27 RCMP responded to a report of a possibly deceased female in a East Pine area residence of Chetwynd.
Chetwynd RCMP front line officers attended and located the body of a 57 year old woman inside the residence.
The Major Crimes Unit has taken conduct of the investigation and continue to work closely in partnership with the Chetwynd RCMP, the RCMP Forensic Identification Service and the BC Coroners Service.
Investigators believe this to be an isolated incident, as a suspect was taken into custody without incident, said Sergeant Chris Manseau, media relations officer for the BC RCMP in a release.
Investigators are working closely with partners to determine the motive in this incident, and at this time there is nothing to indicate any threat to the public.
North District Major Crimes Unit is asking anyone with information regarding the investigation, to contact the Chetwynd RCMP Detachment at 250-788-9221.
The effects of this tragedy are being felt by the entire community, says Sgt.Wahnese Antonioni-Stevens, Chetwynd RCMP Detachment Commander.
We are working closely with our partners at School District 59 to alleviate any concerns the public may have.

“And this is the will of Him that sent Me(Jesus), that everyone which sees the Son, and believes on Him, may have everlasting life, and I will raise him up at the last day.” John 6:40
In my last article ‘INVESTING BEYOND THE GRAVE’ I focused on the absolute importance of making Heaven our home, yet we do not want to miss the fact that the Lord Jesus Christ has also purchased our resurrection. No doubt you have heard about the rapture and some of
the controversy surrounding it, but what I am referring to specifically is the resurrection of our bodies.
The goal to beat death has been a desire of the human race since our conception. It has been expressed in stories and tales throughout history worldwide. Even the Indiana Jones movie “The Last Crusade” capitalized on this theme - the search for the Cup of Christ, a mythical story that if anyone finds the ‘Holy Grail’ and drinks from it, will never die.
The truth is, we don’t want to die, and rightly so, because we were originally designed to exist as eternal beings. But the wages of sin is death, and we are all guilty! Nevertheless, Jesus’ death and resurrection not only purchased the forgiveness for our sins, but just as He rose from the dead, at His return, He will raise up from the dead those who have believed in Him. We will have a new and perfect body like His resurrected body that will never experience sickness, pain, suffering, death, and best of all, we will not be driven by our sins, which has brought all these other things about in the first place!
One may ask, “But why will we need a new body at all if we are going to Heaven anyways?” Well, you must understand that God designed us as physical beings, and we are not complete without our physical bodies. The Bible also says that the last enemy that Jesus will put under His feet is death. It goes on to say, “O death, where is your sting, O grave where is your victory?”
So all those who have already died and gone to Heaven are waiting for the resurrection of their bodies, wherein the dead in Christ will rise first, and those who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so shall we always be with the Lord (1 Thessalonians. 4:17). It will be well worth the wait.
Until then, stay healthy and well, and treat that body properly (because it actually doesn’t belong to you), and we will meet together on that day in a far better place. Next - Why All the Commotion?

Conditional sentence: The judge gives the accused a jail term, but allows them to serve it in the community as long as they follow certain conditions. Often called house arrest.
Conditional discharge: The accused’s record won’t show a conviction if they meet conditions the judge sets out in a probation order.
Recognizance after allegation: An agreement to keep the peace and be of good behaviour when the court finds there are reasonable grounds that a person will commit an offence.
Victim surcharge: A fine levied by judges at their discretion during sentencing that goes toward helping victims of crime.

DC & District Chamber of Commerce asks for member input
Our members are the backbone of our organization, and their input is critical in shaping our priorities and direction,” said Duncan Malkinson, Executive Director of the Dawson Creek & District Chamber of Commerce.
“As we look at the future of the Chamber, we want to make sure that we are focusing our efforts in the areas that matter most to our members.”
The 2023 Membership Engagement Survey will enable members to provide feedback on these and other areas where the Chamber can add value and promote the economic welfare of Dawson Creek and the surrounding district. Members can access the survey through upcoming ‘business walks’ conducted by the Chamber.

The Mirror’s serial comic strip for 2023 is War on Crime!
The strip launched on May 18, 1936 appearing in 45 newspapers. It was written by crime reporter Rex Collier, who was a personal friend of Hoover. The illustrations were initially provided by Kemp Sterrett who after a year was replaced by Jimmy Thompson.
All the stories featured in the War on Crime
were real-life cases, and personally vetted by Hoover. The strip chronicled the demise of such infamous characters as: Ma Barker, Baby Face Nelson and John Dillinger.
War on Crime was conceived, at least in part, by FBI director Edgar J. Hoover, who intended it as a public relations exercise. It was
designed to counteract the current portrayals of G-men as lone mavericks. Instead, the strip showed the FBI as a formidable and well-oiled organization that was under the direct control of the director.
The strip finished its run on January 22, 1938.

There will soon be more clowns in Mile Zero than normal – the
15th annual Circus North Youth Camp is coming to DC.
The workshop, to be put on by Green Fools Theatre from April 17 to 21, is designed to encourage youth to be active and develop unique performance skills. Learn circus art skills: stilt walking, juggling, unicycle, clowning, trapeze, tight rope walking and more! Open to youth ages 8 to 18.
It wraps up with a final performance in front of family and friends showcasing newly learned skills. 2023 marks the 15th year of South Peace Community Arts Council hosting this annual program – and the first one back since a pandemic break.
The Circus North Youth Camp is hosted by Green Fools Theatre.
“Our first social circus programs rolled out in the northern British Columbia communities of Chetwynd and Dawson Creek, through our reach that has taken us as far as The Kingdom of Lesotho, South Africa to teach circus skills, through our ongoing programming to numerous Canadian cities, towns, and First Nations communities,” note Green Fool reps.
Space is limited.

A Man Called Otto: a man with a backstory is back in Mile Zero
Rob Brown editor@dcdn.ca
Like Harrison Ford in The Call of the Wild or with Clint Eastwood’s Gran Turino without the gangsters – A Man Called Otto is an interesting study of a lone, world-weary character.
The emotional attachment comes from the character’s past – while any story development comes from new characters viewers and he are about to meet.
Otto meets new neighbours Marisol and Tommy, while a backstory plays out in flashback of Otto meeting a girl, marrying the girl, starting a family with her
You meet a young man and wonder where his smile disappeared to. It doesn’t take viewers long to be invested in Otto, and learn exactly why he’s the curmudgeon he is.
The film shows why Tom Hanks is a performer with the career he has – despite a pair of suspect roles this year in Elvis and Pinocchio.
A Man Called Otto plays this week in the Creek.

I give you this one thought to keep I am with you still – I do not sleep
I am a thousand winds that blow
I am the diamond glints on snow
I am the sunlight on ripened grain
I am the gentle autumn rain
When you awaken in the mornings hush
I am the swift uplifting rush of quiet birds in circled flight
I am the soft stars that shine at night Do not think of me as gone
I am with you still – in each new dawn
We love and miss you Kalvin

KevinCharlesJosephPettit
1947-2023
Kevin was born July 7, 1947 in Cornwall, Ontario, which borders the mighty St. Lawrence River. He died February 23, 2023 in Rincon de Guayabitos, Mexico, his happy place on the Pacific Ocean.
Kevin resided in Dawson Creek, BC with his wife Cathy since 1981. There, he developed a great love for the surrounding geography, particularly the expansive Peace River. Kevin had a strong affinity for water and the north.
Kevin was eldest son of the late Kenneth & Lillian Pettit of Hamilton, ON. He was beloved husband to Cathy (“Kell”) for the past 35 years. He was brother to Terry and Hugh, Trevor, Lana and Rick, Marlon and Jennifer. Brother-in-law to Ron and Jan Kelly.
Dearly loved by his best little buddy, Dylan. Proud uncle and great-uncle to many nieces and nephews across Canada and beyond.
Kevin was an avid sportsman. Hockey was his greatest passion. His career began in Hamilton as a Junior Redwing, and continued at Cornell University where he received the honourable title of “All American”. In 1969-70, Kevin helped Cornell achieve their only undefeated championship season.
Kevin maintained close ties to his fellow Cornell athletes over the years and continued to nurture his love for hockey in recreational leagues where he formed many more lasting friendships over several decades.
Kevin kept many other hobbies such as golfing, swimming, bowling, and hiking. He was a real outdoorsman, and would chat contentedly at length about geography.
Perhaps more than anything, Kevin was known for his quick-witted humour and elaborate storytelling. He was a true conversationalist and genuinely enjoyed speaking with and learning about other people.

Kevin was an extraordinary friend to many across Canada, the United States, and Mexico. He was loved and will be dearly missed by all.
Kevin’s family extends a special thank you to his Mexican family and community for their outpouring of love and support during this difficult time. In remembrance of Kevin, please hold your own celebration by raising a glass, recalling a shared moment, and enjoying a smile at the memory. He’d like that.

Wildmushroomrisotto
Servings: 6
Ingredients
• 15 grams dried wild mushrooms
• 1 cup of hot water
• 2 sprigs of fresh rosemary
• 7 cups chicken broth
• 1/4 cup butter
• 2 French shallots, finely chopped
• 2 cups arborio rice
• 1 cup of white wine
• 3/4 cup of Parmesan cheese
• Salt and pepper, to taste
Directions
1. Rehydrate the mushrooms by soaking them in a cup of hot water with a sprig of rosemary for 30 minutes. Remove the mushrooms from the water and dry them on paper towels. Strain the water to remove any debris and the rosemary.
2. In a saucepan, combine the chicken broth and mushroom water. Heat until simmering.
3. In a large skillet, sauté the French shallots in half the butter until translucent. Add the arborio rice and toss well to coat all the grains.
4. Deglaze the pan with the white wine and scrape the bottom with a wooden spoon. Let simmer until almost all the liquid is gone. Reduce the heat and add one ladleful of hot broth at a time, stirring until the liquid is completely absorbed between each addition. Once almost all the broth has been used, taste frequently to ensure the rice is cooked al dente. You may not need to use all the broth.
5. Turn off the heat and add the other half of the butter and the Parmesan cheese to the mixture. Add salt and pepper to taste. Mix well. Serve in fancy bowls and garnish with a few sprigs of rosemary.
