Northern B.C. murders: suspects continue to elude national manhunt Two teens wanted for three murders in Northern B.C. continue to elude a national manhunt led by RCMP and the Canadian military in Manitoba.

After a “thorough and exhaustive” search, Manitoba RCMP said Monday afternoon that they have yet to substantiate a tip that Kam McLeod and Bryer Schmegelsky are in the York Landing area. However, resources will remain in both the York Landing and Gillam areas as the search continues, RCMP said.

“We thank the community for their patience and understanding and ask them to continue to be vigilant,” RCMP said in a tweet.

Mounties redirected their search for McLeod and Schmegelsky from Gillam to York Landing on Sunday afternoon, after the two were thought to have been spotted scavenging at a landfill.

Earlier Monday morning, Cpl. Julie Courchaine said officers searched the area throughout Sunday night and were to be aided by the Canadian air force today.

“Our goal today remains to safely locate and apprehend the individuals and confirm their identities,” Courchaine said.

McLeod and Schmegelsky are wanted on a Canada-wide arrest warrant, and are charged with second-degree murder in the death of 64-year-old Leonard Dyck of Vancouver. Dyck’s body was found at a highway pullout two kilometres from where the teens’ burned-out Dodge pickup truck was found on Highway 37 near Dease Lake on July 19.

The pair are also suspects in the killings of 23-yearold Lucas Fowler of Sydney, Australia, and 24-year-old Chynna Deese of Charlotte, North Carolina. Their bodies were discovered July 15 beside the Alaska Highway, 20 kilometres south of Liard Hot Springs. No charges have yet been announced in that investigation.

York Landing is about 90 kilometres southwest of Gillam, where police had been concentrating their search efforts since a week-long manhunt began Monday, July 22.

Police closed in on York Landing Sunday around 5 p.m. after security patrollers saw two men scavenging at the lo-

cal dump.

Bear Patrol Inc. executive director James Favel said his company had been asked to send staff in to assist communities in the search area when patrollers saw two young men with no weapons or backpacks at the dump. All they had were the clothes they were wearing from what the team could see.

When the pair saw the security team, “they bolted,” Favel said. The pair ran for trees and the patrol called police.

“All hell is breaking loose and the town is locked down,” Favel said.

He said the team weren’t worried as they initially thought the pair might be a work crew. It was the absence of a work truck that made them suspicious, he said.

“The adrenaline hit,” he said.

York Landing is accessible only by air, or a two-hour ferry crossing in the summer from the community of Split Lake. A rail line also runs 25 kilometres south of the community. Search efforts there included a helicopter, police dogs, emergency response team members, and other specialized officers.

McLeod and Schmegelsky were confirmed to have been seen in Split Lake before the SUV they were last seen travelling in was found on fire north of Gillam.

RCMP, with the help of police dogs and the military, had spent the last week searching homes, cottages, cabins, abandoned buildings, rail lines, and waterways around Gillam.

Their efforts were bolstered Saturday when a Canadian Air Force CC-130H Hercules airplane landed in Gillam along with military personnel.

York Landing resident John Kalenchuk said helicopters and police in fatigues had been patrolling the area since about 6 p.m local time on Sunday, just over an hour after the security team spotted the suspicious pair.

“They’re flying around lots looking for those two characters,” he said. “There’s patrols on foot with dogs.”

Kalenhcuk said the pair would be trapped if they hadn’t managed to escape the dump area. Their choice to escape, he said, would be to take a winter road back out of the area or swim from island to island in the Hayes River which enters Hudson Bay not far to the northeast.

Peace family needs your help Shaun Jacquard needs the Peace’s support. Jacquard is a father of two and a father fighting to extend his life.

On October 3, 2018 the family was given the news that Shaun, at the young age of 38, was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called Synovial Sarcoma. The cancer is in his right lung and has grown into his chest cavity.

To date Shaun and wife Monica have had to travel to Vancouver multiple times for medical appointments and he has had to do six cycles of inpatient chemotherapy in Vancouver.

This area doesn’t have any oncologists or offer this inpatient treatment.

Each cycle was a week long and took them away from their two children, 15 year old Ethan and four year old Felix.

Aftr chemotherapy Shaun and Monica had to return to Vancouver for 5 weeks of outpatient radiation, again being away from his kids. Shaun is so close to his children and it makes things worse being away from family.

Prior to radiation, Shaun found out that surgery is not an option for treatment and he was deemed palliative, with an unknown amount of time left in his life, all dependent on how the cancer responds to treatment. Best they hope for is that any treatment at least stops the cancer from growing, shrinking it would be amazing. The chemotherapy did shrink some of the tumour, but during the wait for radiation two other nodules grew and one is now 12cm in diameter. Radiation only

shrunk the targeted tumour a bit.

“On July 15 Shaun found out that one of the two chemo pills he could take was denied funding. Another round of inpatient chemotherapy would give too many dangerous side effects as he isn’t as strong as he was for the first treatment,” says wife Monica.

“He is able to get a second chemo pill however he only has coverage for 3 months. If the pill doesn’t work then the oncologist gives him only months to live. If the pill works but he can’t afford to purchase any more because his benefits will be maximized then he is back to have months to live.”

While waiting for this treatment to start, the Fort St. John resident has been admitted to hospital multiple times due to extreme uncontrollable pain.

“We are just trying to stop the growth and extend his life and comfort.

Funds raised will help the family pay for Shaun’s chemotherapy pills which will hopefully extend his life and give him a better quality of life so he can spend it with his family. Shaun has been off work since the end of his inpatient chemotherapy treatment and Shaun’s wife Monica has been off work for over a year on her own medical leave.

Travellers fearful as suspected killers remain on the loose As a Canada-wide manhunt noose tightens around two B.C. men charged in the death of a man on a northern highway death and suspected in two others, a mood of fear has gripped the province’s north.

Canada-wide warrants have been issued for Kam McLeod, 19, and Bryer Schmegelsky, 18, charged with second degree murder in connection with the death of the man, Leonard Dyck, who was found a few kilometres from the teens’ burned-out pickup truck on Highway 37 near Dease Lake July 19.

The Port Alberni childhood friends are also suspects in the killings of American Chynna Deese and Australian Lucas Fowler. Their bodies were found along the Alaska Highway on July 15 near a van they had been travelling in. Charges have yet to be announced in that investigation.

They may be in Manitoba but until they’re caught, people remain on edge.

McLeod and Schmegelsky — best friends since elementary school — had left Port Alberni for Whitehorse July 12 to find work, Schmegelsky’s grandmother Carol Starkey has said.

If they had taken the ferry to Prince Rupert, the route to Whitehorse is up Highway 37 through Dease Lake.

However, police had reports of them being seen travelling south from a general store in Dease Lake at about 3:15 p.m. last Thursday.

In Dawson Creek, people believe the pair continued north from Dease Lake to cross the top of B.C through the Yukon and then came down the Alaska

Highway where they might have met Deese and Fowler.

And that route would have put them on a path for Dawson Creek where the road turns east for a route across northern Alberta and into Saskatchewan where the pair have been reportedly seen.

If that’s so, the pair could have driven past the top of retired Dawson Creek businesswoman Marg Forbes’ driveway at Mile 6 of the Alaska Highway. Now, when someone arrives at her door, she grabs the phone to call police while checking to see who’s there.

“I’m absolutely terrified,” Forbes said. “I thought I lived in the safest place on earth.

“All the innocence of the Alaska Highway has been taken away.”

Forbes believes the wanted men would shy away from populated centres and stick to northern roads.

Northern B.C.’s biggest urban centre is Prince George, 1,200 kilometres by road from Vancouver and 406 kilometres south of Dawson Creek. The road between them is isolated country, travelled by tourists, heavily laden logging trucks and heavy industry traffic, serving the resource-rich northeast.

And in the summer months, the road is densely populated with tourists off on their Alaska Highway adventure into the Yukon.

“We’re not going to stop for strangers,” Newton said outside the McLeod Lake General Store.

Peace livestock producers eligible for tax deferrals Producers throughout the Peace Region will be eligible for 2019 tax relief as a result of extreme weather conditions.

Agriculture Canada announced the designated regions in a July 22 news release in which it notes “livestock producers in Western Canada and Quebec are experiencing significant forage shortages due to drought conditions, supporting an early designation under the livestock tax deferral provision. Ongoing analysis and consultations will continue to determine if additional regions will be added to the designated list.”

Producers in the designated areas can defer until 2020 some of the 2019 proceeds, if any, from the sale of breeding stock. Some producers had to downsize their breeding herds because of drought-induced feed shortages earlier this year.

Agriculture Canada said the regions in which producers are eligible for the deferral are those where forage shortfalls of 50 percent or more were caused by either drought or excess moisture.

Weather, climate and production data were used to determine the designated areas, it said.

To defer income for tax purposes, producers must have reduced their

breeding herds by at least 15 percent. If that reduction was less than 30 percent of the herd, 30 percent of the income from net sales can be deferred.

If the breeding herd was reduced by 30 percent or more, 90 percent of the income from net sales can be deferred.

“In the case of consecutive years of drought or excess moisture and flood conditions, producers may defer sales income to the first year in which the region is no longer prescribed,” Agriculture Canada said on its website.

In a news release announcing the tax deferral program, federal agriculture minister Marie-Claude Bibeau acknowledged the challenges created by drought.

“It is a priority for our government to quickly determine how the livestock tax deferral will be authorized to ensure that our producers have the support necessary to make informed herd management decisions and to help them keep their businesses strong,” Bibeau said.

A map of the areas in which the tax deferral might apply includes all of Saskatchewan south of Saskatoon, most of the area in Alberta east of Red Deer and southeast of Calgary, a large swath of Manitoba from the Saskatchewan border east to Winnipeg and a wide area of northern British Columbia and Alberta surrounding Fort St. John.

‘Preserve the farmer’: B.C. agriculture critic tours the Peace

B.C.’s opposition critic for agriculture is wrapping up a tour of the Peace region this week and is encouraging his counterparts in government to head north to do the same.

Liberal MLA Ian Paton (Delta South) met with farmers and producer groups alongside MLA Dan Davies to tour their operations and learn more about the research and challenges that come with farming in the north.

“The NDP government and the agriculture minister and her newly formed Agricultural Land Commission need to get on a bus and start travelling the province to see what agriculture is really all about. It’s not about five-acre hobby farms in Saanich growing an acre of organic carrots and beans and potatoes that are being sold at the farmers market on weekends,” Paton said Friday.

“We got to make sure the big-time farmers, the conventional farmers, are making a good living and keep them around, because if we want to preserve farmland in this province, all you got to do is preserve the farmer.”

Paton said it was eye-opening to see just how much the ag industry has grown and diversified in the Peace since he first visited as a child in the 1960s during the building of the WAC Bennett Dam. But, farmers are being challenged by recent legislation including Bill 15 and Bill 52, Paton said, which eliminates a farmer’s right to apply for exclusions from the Agricultural Land Reserve, and limits their ability to build more structures or establish a value-added business on their land.

The new legislation also eliminates the two-zone farm land system put in place by the former Liberal government,

and does away with regional panels that made local decisions on the development of farmland.

Those changes make it tough for a farm family wanting to hand down the farm to their children, and build a second home, Paton said. It also makes it hard for northern farmers to maximize their income outside the growing season by being able to have an accessory business on their land, such as an autobody or welding shop, he said.

“What they’re doing is giving more control and power to state,” said Paton, whose father was a former chairman of the Agricultural Land Commission.

“I’m a believer that if you want the next generation to take an active role in the farm, and mom and dad want to retire, you have to give the family members an opportunity to live on the farm.

You cannot take away that opportunity; you can’t have kids commuting from downtown Fort St. John to the farm.”

Paton, a third generation dairy farmer, said farming is different in each region of the province, from the tree fruit and wine industry in the Lower Mainland and Okanagan, to the beef cattle industry in the Chilcotin, to the grain and oilseed industry in the Peace.

Keeping them all profitable is key to the future of farming in B.C., he said.

“As long as farmers are making a good living they’re going to continue to farm, and their kids and their grandkids are going to want to continue to farm too,” Paton said.

“But when we see farmers not making a decent living, that’s when they start pulling up the reins and saying, ‘Well, let’s put the farm up for sale,’ and that’s when you get speculators coming in to buy farmland.” editor@ahnfsj.ca

Peace casinos generated $28.9M in gambling revenues last year Gambling revenues took a dip in Fort St. John and Dawson Creek last fiscal year, according to new numbers from the BC Lottery Corporation.

Revenues generated at the two Chances gaming centres totalled $28.99 million in 2018-19, down slightly from $29.67 million in 2016-17.

At Chances Fort St. John, revenues totalled $16.63 million, down by $44,000, but still relatively on par with 2017-18 revenues of $16.68 million.

Slots continue to dominate revenues, bringing in $15.1 million in Fort St. John, up by roughly $26,000 year-overyear. Table games brought in $1.4 million, up from $1.33 million in 2017-18.

Bingo brought in $116,000, down from $257,000.

Maybe it is because I am scared that my second book will not live up to the same expectations (pun intended) as my first book. How many times have you read a second book from an author and said to yourself, “That certainly wasn’t what I expected.” THAT is what I worry about, and my worry takes up the valuable time and effort that I should be directed towards the writing of words….on a blank page.

They are not all blank pages. In fact, most of them are filled with stories in various stages of completion.

I have so many excuses, “I am too busy” or “I am taking time off to enjoy the summer,” but none of them are true.

The truth is that I am scared and intimidated.

It is not as if I am Margaret Atwood and my books will be converted into a television series. It is not as if my books will be nominated for a Scotiabank Giller Prize. My mediocrity should actually be helpful rather than a hindrance.

I think that I am scared because my first book was written for myself. I had set the bar relatively low because I had no clue what I was doing. The first book was about realizing a dream, and if a handful of folks read it and had a giggle then ‘Voila!’ my thoughts were imagined.

What happens if the second book falls short? The title, Lowered Expectations, unintentionally speaks volumes about my current mindset.

I reason with myself by saying, “It is not as if any puppies would be harmed if my second book is horrible” and that the world would continue to spin and the sun will come up, etc. My mother will still love me even if I screw up and isn’t that the most important thing?

So what do I have to lose?

NICHOLS - how is your dash? What does that mean? Read on!

Merlin Nichols Columnist Almost two decades ago, a big chunk of a short lifespan, I was invited to give the graduation address at Northern Lights College in Dawson Creek.

I accepted on condition that I would present from a treadmill. As a young man of 60, I thought that would be no problem. It wasn’t for the first 40 minutes, and then I was finished with still enough juice to get to my chair.

But my topic is new every day and how we deal with it determines our peace of mind, perhaps even our sanity.

We may be living in uncertain times – indeed, we are – but there is much we can do to ease our passage.

In our own little part of the world and the nation we are daily confronted with issues related to getting our product to market, harvesting or extracting the raw material for our product, escalating prices for out food, carbon dioxide emission rates, unresolved concern over caribou recover measures that could have long-term effects on our local economy, the measures, that is. And we can’t directly do a thing about any of it.

All of this, and more, with potential to keep us up in the night.

We wonder why the authorities can’t get it together. Why should Alberta suffer with a glut of product that the market would absorb if we could pipe it to market? Why are we still importing oil to the east coast from Saudi Arabia while interdicting tanker traffic on the west coast north? Do we have no concerns about the sanctity of the east coast?

The final investment decision on LNG was made months ago; still the shovels are idle. Why? Let’s

get them activated. Farmers fret over lost meat and canola markets, the result of failed international diplomacy. How come? Are we stupid, or worse?

If we pay attention to our national radio we will have noted that the new bogey man of alleged climate change is front and centre on the national mind. Thanks to CBC, it might be. But is it real?

Last spring the CC experts were threatening us with a hot, dry summer and more smoke than we wanted, the new norm, they said. Summer’s half gone and it’s still cool and damp with clouds hanging low like the jeans on a teen-age boy with inadequate parental supervision or an old man who forgot his suspenders (I’m old). Maybe CC isn’t as real as its protagonists want us to believe.

And maybe they want us to believe because it has created entirely new sources of income for the promoters.

Still the nations worry.

Perhaps there is something closer to home and hearth that should grab our daily attention. Two decades ago I called it the dash. How’s your dash?

You know, the dash.

Visit almost any cemetery and examine the headstones. You’ll notice a number (date of birth), a dash, and a number (date of death). That little dash is all we have. It’s the present. It’s our time.

It’s every bit of life over which we have a modicum of control. Forget the canola, the caribou, “changing” climate, price of food in the grocery store or gas at the pump, visions of pipelines and pipeline protesters, the redding of the spruce forests in the Pine Pass, terrible as that is with no apparent efforts either to harvest the wood or halt the spread of the bug.

Yes, you can “raise your voice, cry aloud, spare not, and tell your [leaders] their sins” if you can

find a medium that will accept your voice. You can even vote out the old and vote in the new. Will things change? Maybe – or not.

But don’t let the cacophony of life spinning around you, over which you have little or no control, affect your dash.

There are some things you can control, among them your use of time and money. Pay attention to time and money and ease your dash. Your control actually depends on the extent and use of your vocabulary.

There’s a little word that means the same in any language. In English it’s no. It tells you: I won’t buy; not today; you can’t have the keys to the car; I’m not going out tonight; I’m not watching that movie; I won’t buy. Say the word often; say it with relish; say it with a smile of hope. If you convince yourself that no means no, you really don’t have to convince anyone else.

How’s your debt load (I really am getting personal)? Are you a typical Canadian with $1.71 in debt for every dollar of income? Factor out all those who have no dept and that figure will look a lot more daunting. If you are one of the typical, it’s high time to see a debt counsellor and ease your dash.

If you still are reading this we know one thing, you can read. Do you read to your young children, instilling in their developing minds the principles of life (of no) that will give them peace of mind in uncertain times that likely will become only more uncertain?

By the way, the ancients have taught us to “guard our minds diligently, for out of them come the issues of life.” Are you comfortable with no; how’s that dash going?

SNYDER: Pogo sticks, Olympic medals, squirrels, Mr. Dressup, Boris. es. I have to admit, when I became an adult, my main regret was that pogo sticks did not play as big a part in my life as I thought they would. And in today’s world, I’m kind of surprised there’s no app you can download that turns your phone into a Pogo stick.

DIAPER DETAIL: Once again here’s another news chewing session. Weekly proof the news is sometimes a crutch for people who cannot handle reality. We start with words from the folks who make Pampers diapers.

Last week they announced an exciting new line of hi-tech “smart diapers”. I have no idea what a “smart diaper” is.

But I have to think if a diaper is really smart - it would not allow itself to be strapped to a baby’s bottom.

T.P. LOL: The other new product announcement came from the company that makes Charmin. They now offer Charmin “Forever” toilet paper.

They claim one roll will last the average person a month. The rolls are expensive -- but they include free perforations.

DRESSUP DETAIL: Do you remember Mr Dressup, the legendary kid’s TV host? In Toronto he was inducted into the Canada Walk of Fame. Mr Dressup was on TV during a nicer, gentler time.

His show would not work with today’s TV audience. People would call the CBC and complain “There’s a weird old guy on TV, he’s wearing strange clothes and he’s playing with puppets”.

CRUISE NEWS: Tom Cruise has finished filming the sequel to his “Top Gun” movie, it’s scheduled for release in 2020. Tom will spend the next year promoting the movie on TV talkshows. I will spend the next year trying to come up with new comments about how Tom is a crazy little guy, but ya gotta love him.

Marvel Studios announcing their previously male superhero Thor will be played by actress Natalie Portman. Some fans were unhappy with this. But hey, it’s 2019. Get used to it.

Working together to eliminate racism and hate in B.C.

By Ravi Kahlon Parliamentary Secretary for Sport and Multiculturalism I am meeting with community leaders and organizations in the Peace River region to discuss local, emerging issues on racism and hate as part of a series of engagement meetings I am hosting around the province this summer.

I want to hear from people who are at the forefront of this critical issue and who are dedicated to combating discrimination and racism in our province.

I want to understand: what is being done, what is working and what more we can do.

Roasted Black Bean Cod Serves 2

1 large garlic clove 1⁄2 inch piece fresh ginger, peeled 2 teaspoons teriyaki sauce 1 teaspoon rice wine vinegar 1 cod fillet, about 3⁄4 lb Freshly ground black pepper Spray made of water-diluted oil 1 quantity of Black Bean Tomato Sauce (see below) Salsa of choice

Far too often, hate turns into violence and crime. Police-reported hate crimes have increased in B.C. in recent years — from 164 reported incidents in 2015 to 255 incidents in 2017. This tells us that many people face racial discrimination as part of their daily lives.

Our friends, neighbours, colleagues and family are being targeted simply for their identity – their race, faith, sexual orientation, gender identity or other traits that make them who they are.

Some of us have seen racist flyers distributed in our communities, witnessed verbal attacks or read hate speech online. Other times, racism is expressed in subtle ways that may not be as obvious, but that are just as damaging.

It seems we hear about these incidents so often that they can almost become common place to us. This must never be. We cannot let the seriousness of these acts be diminished. We must come together in our resolve to fight for a more welcoming, safe and just society for all British Columbians.

The challenges are great. However, we find inspiration from people in our communities who are working to eliminate hate and encourage cross-cultural dialogue, trust and mutual respect for all people. I want to encourage every person in B.C. to consider how they can fight against racism and hate in their own lives.

The insight I gain from these community engagements will inform how we move forward towards building stronger, inclusive communities where everyone can participate fully in all aspects of society — a place where everyone has an equal chance to contribute and prosper.

Black Bean Tomato Sauce 4 cloves garlic, peeled 1 inch fresh ginger 6 to 7 scallions, chopped 11⁄4 cups stock 1⁄4 cup dry sherry 1 teaspoon oyster sauce 1 teaspoon Chinese chili sauce 2 teaspoons Chinese black bean sauce 1⁄2 cup passata Juice of 1 lime 2 tablespoons fresh cilantro Make the black bean sauce and set aside: Crush together the garlic and ginger and put in a wok with the chopped scallions, stock and sherry. Simmer briskly until the liquid has almost evaporated.

Stir in the oyster, chili and black bean sauces and bring to a boil.

Continue to boil, stirring for a few seconds.

Stir in the passata, and then simmer briskly for 30 seconds. Stir in the lime juice and chopped cilantro and simmer for a few seconds longer.

Make the cod: Crush together the garlic and ginger and put in a bowl with the teriyaki sauce and vinegar.

Put the cod on a plate and cover with the gingergarlic mixture. Grind over some pepper. Marinate at room temperature for approximately 20 minutes.

Mist a baking sheet with the oil-water spray. Put the cod on the sheet, scraping all of the marinade over the fish. Spray with oil and oven-roast for 9 to 10 minutes per one-inch thickness of fish.

Spoon the heated Black Bean Tomato Sauce onto a plate. Set the roasted fish on top, then surround with salsa as garnish. PC193805

IT’S ZIMMERTIME: staying out of politics I usually try to stay out of the politics of other countries, especially when it comes to elections and those who are running for leadership roles. However, with the recent announcement of Washington Governor Jay Inslee’s 2020 Presidential election bid, I’m having a hard time staying quiet.

It is no secret that Governor Inslee has been, and continues to be, a vocal opponent of the Trans Mountain Expansion project. Most recently at a joint news conference in Seattle with BC Premier John Horgan, Governor Inslee was asked how he would try to influence the project. His response: “Every way that we can under Canadian law.”

Following the announcement that Governor Inslee will be running for President, I wrote him a letter voicing my concerns with his opposition to this vital project. In the letter I highlighted how important this project is to our country’s economy, how many jobs it will create, and the projected $46.7 billion in government revenues the expansion will provide from construction and first 20 years of operation.

Governor Inslee claims that his concerns with the Trans Mountain Expansion are due to the increase in oil tanker traffic. However, as I noted in my letter, 46 per cent of Washington State’s crude oil products came from inbound oil tankers in 2017. Not only that but the state has the fifth highest oil refining capacity in the United States and production has increased under his leadership.

I went on to explain that the Trans Mountain Expansion will increase the number of tankers needed from five per month to approximately 34, meaning an additional one ship each day, and how our previous Conservative government took measures to strengthen an already robust tanker safety system. It is also important to note that tolls paid on the Trans Mountain Expansion will pay for the Western Canada Marine Response Corporation to reduce spill response times for all ships from 6 hours to 2 hours in the Port of Vancouver, and from 3 days to 6 hours through the Salish Sea and across the west coast of Vancouver Island.

As you know, the National Energy Board recently renewed its support for the Trans Mountain Expansion. I firmly believe that the development of our natural resources is vitally important to the future of our local, and national, economy. Like many of you, I have followed the development of this project closely and I continue to believe that it can be completed in an environmentally responsible way.

That said, I am deeply concerned that someone who is running for President of the United States would have such a vocal and hypocritical position of a Canadian project. Canada’s energy sector is second to none when it comes to developing oil and gas with some of the highest environmental standards in the world.

If the Governor is so concerned about the environment as he claims to be, maybe instead of looking over the fence and telling us what to do, he should start at home first.

AMY RESSLER: I don’t know who needs to hear this today Amy Ressler Columnist

So here I am. Completely out of my comfort zone. Starting to write publicly and hoping at the most I’m entertaining and at the least I learn something. Working my small business during the day, attempting to be a writer by night. I love to write. I have always loved to write.

Just ask my Mom, her books and walls. Once it was the back of a door. I remember I worked on that one unnoticed for weeks before my Dad caught me. I was about four and every day I added a little something with a green crayon under the Indiana Jones poster I had on the back of my bedroom door. It was a ‘Raiders of The Lost Ark’ poster in case you were curious. Eventually, I moved to writing books with construction paper and binding the pages with yarn.

I remember taking them to my elementary school, Parkhill, and my teacher telling me to “dedicate my first book to her”. I have always loved writing. I get lost in it. I start typing and before I know it, it’s midnight and my glass of wine is empty. Over the years I had considered writing things to share. I even considered sending something into the paper just to see. But I had always convinced myself I wasn’t good enough. It’s hard to put yourself out there.

Last week, after a series of events too long to write today, I decided to write something up

and send it to the newspaper. The writing was the easy part, hitting the send button was brutal. I grit my teeth, closed my eyes and like the rip of a band-aid I decided at once to stop thinking and just do it. So I did. I felt instant regret. I put myself out there and it’s scary.

To my surprise, they not only responded, but here I am. Writing my introduction.

If you want something, just do it. You can’t learn and continue to grow until you put yourself out there. Sometimes that involves failing, that’s ok too. But don’t be afraid to take the leap. If there’s something you’ve been humming and hawing about doing, take this advice. Here is your sign.

As I finish up my public debut into the writing world, I suppose it would be appropriate to introduce myself. This is supposed to be an introduction, after all. So in a nutshell, I’m Amy. I have called Dawson Creek home most of my life, I love it here. My friends and family are here. When I’m not working, you can catch me somewhere walking or hiking with my large pup, Hank. I love him more than most people. He’s my sidekick who goes everywhere I can take him. I’m self employed, my job allows me to listen to audiobooks and podcasts all day. Nonfiction books are my jam. As for podcasts, usually it’s comedy or true crime. And now, perhaps, I might be able to add writer to this list.

I hope someone needed to hear this today.

The Crazy Senoritas are a troupe of female impersonators from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. For eight years, they have drawn sellout crowds of holidaying Canadians to the popular Luna Lounge dinner shows, in nearby Bucerias. Their show features humorous song parodies, warped adult humour and hilarious interactions with members of the audience.

Entertainment columnist Debbie White of the Puerto Vallarta Tribune says “the girls” have put together a very entertaining show that audiences love. The song parodies are hysterical and the costumes and skits are superb. The Crazy Senoritas show has been a “can’t miss” event in the Puerto Vallarta area for years.”

The young actors quickly make audiences forget they are not women, but men disguised as women. Often, people who were hesitant about attending the show have so much fun they return again and again with relatives and friends in tow. The show is not about gays or cross-dressers. It’s just a very funny music and comedy show. But it’s not for kids.

So why have these Mexican en-

tertainers been invited to perform in towns and cities all over western Canada? It’s really no mystery at all.

Their main winter audience is mostly western Canadians fleeing the cold and snow who like to see the show again and again.

Besides being fun for their many fans, the tour gives others a chance to enjoy it, without travelling to Mexico. Add the fact that tour promoter Merv Buchanan is a Calgarian and it all makes sense. For those who didn’t get enough of The Crazy Senoritas in Mexico, their western Canada tour is the cure.

Last summer, the troupe performed 27 shows. But the long daily drives and performing night after night without a break took a toll on the performers and crew, so this tour will be limited to 20 stops. Clearly The Crazy Senoritas have a special connection with people in western Canada. And they love performing here.

On Thursday, August 15th, The Crazy Senoritas will perform in Dawson Creek for the third time at a special “tent show” at Boston Pizza.

Wild Words North - student reading will be part of it!

The 2019 Wild Words North Writing Festival and Art Exhibit will showcase regional writers of all ages. On Sunday, September 29th, from 10am – 12 pm, a student reading will be held in the Multi-Purpose Room at the North Peace Cultural Centre in Fort St. John. If you are a high school or college student who would like to share your writing, contact Donna Kane at dkane@pris.ca .

Here is a look at two international students from Northern Lights College who will be reading at this event.

Ly Le is an international student from Vietnam. Currently pursuing an Associates of Arts Degree at Northern Lights College, Ly is also a writer. “Writing makes me understand myself and calms my soul. My works focus on slices of life, the beau-

ty in simple things and how destiny ties people together.”

A second international student who will be sharing her work is Mili Patel. Dynamic, energetic and a creative child at heart, she has accomplished dual degrees back in her homeland of India. A registered nurse pursuing a Post Degree Diploma in Business Management, Mili is also passionate about writing poetry and short stories.

When we talk about the effects of climate change, we often hear nothing but the down side: the risks, the dangers and the costs. But what about the upside, the opportunities and benefits?

Let’s make a “fight against climate change” to-do list: phase out fossil fuels and phase in renewable energies like solar, wind and geothermal; implement massive training programs for the rapidly growing green job sector; preserve the rainforests and plant millions of trees to absorb carbon dioxide; electrify our transportation systems to reduce air pollution and noise; reduce the use of agricultural chemicals and clean up our air, water, food and soil; move to sustainable cities that are designed more for people than cars, with green roofs, fast and efficient public transport, bike lanes, walking paths and green space; accelerate technological innovation and research in energy efficiency to reduce pollution and increase profits and competitiveness . . .

“But gee,” says the skep-

tic, “what if the whole climate change thing turns out to be a big hoax and we go to all this trouble to build a better world for nothing?”

So lets have a look around and see how the world is building itself better.

BERKELEY KICKS OUT GAS No, not gasoline, natural gas.

The City of Berkeley, California, has banned the use of natural gas in all new buildings, including homes, businesses and even restaurants. Such a move is being talked about in numerous cities around the world and the U.K. as a way to reduce their carbon footprint, but Berkeley is the first city to actually do so.

Natural gas, once promoted as a “clean fossil fuel” that will help us “transition to renewables” has, apparently, proven to be not quite as clean as we had hoped. Carbon is carbon, I guess. Sigh.

COST OF ENERGY STORAGE DROPS The renewable energies from the sun and wind are wonderful and free for the harvesting, as long as the sun is shining and the wind is blowing. When the wind slows down and the sun sets, we’ve got a problem.

I recently met someone who I thought had got it all under control. He is only 21 years old at present, made solid plans and knew what he exactly wanted to do. He was clear with his life vision and goals.

He was the one who has figured out his life at this young age. I remember when I was 21 I was still indecisive about my major at the university.

Then, life happened. Instead of thinking, the sky is the limit. He was trying to focus what life was giving. When it rains it pours. One after one he heard sad news, rejections or failures. His relationships were down the hill and so his financial situation. What would you advise someone who is going through all this despite all his dedication and hard work. It is the time when we have to keep reminding ourselves We all had days where things worked out nicely unexpectedly. When we win, we have a chance to lose as well. It is always a 50, 50 chance.

So, when we have one after one problem happening our lives. Why give up? We should never change our goals if you really want something. First of all, everyone has their set of struggles and pain, so why compare? Second, it is okay to

be not good at everything. We are humans, and we all have our flaws. Yes! Success may not happen overnight, but living a high quality of life will be worth after going through all the struggling time. Remember, when life gives you a lemon you make lemonade.

You don’t change your goals, and this is the time when life is testing you the most. Remember, right before things work out, they always get harder.

We are all working hard towards our individual goals in our lives. Working hard should be in the right direction, only then it pays off well. Hard work with no strategy is pointless.

Build yourself first and then others; realistic goals are crucial. But it is also important if you don’t have the skills to deal with a critical problem, build those life skills up, face them, don’t just give up. I always say focus on your strengths and make them stronger. Because for weaknesses, we will hire others. If you have the burning desire to achieve something, the struggle is real.

She believes that kindness, smiles, love, and yawning is contagious. In her spare time, she likes traveling, cooking, reading and working out.

But not for long. Since 2012, the cost of lithium batteries, for instance, has fallen by 74%, and over the last year has continued to fall by another 34%. Lightweight, powerful lithium batteries have made possible world-famous electric cars like the Tesla, and now they’re being used for grid-scale energy storage.

The cheapest power in the world was just sold to a California utility for less than two cents per kilowatt-hour. The energy is coming from a solar farm with lithium storage. Combining wind and solar with storage is a major game changer, and it’s happening fast.

“LIKE” A SOLAR FARM Often our Canadian national and provincial climate leadership seems to be in turmoil, but we can look to the private sector for hope. Barclays, one of the world’s largest banks, has committed to using 100% renewable energy by 2030, while US retailing giant Target has done the same. Facebook is building a 379 megawatt solar project to power one of its many energy-hungry

facilities. What’s not to “Like” about that?

Other majors like Google and GM are frustrated by the lack of readily available renewable energy. Together they have formed the Renewable Energy Buyers Alliance, a mega-team with big clout and big buying power.

Speaking of GM, they have closed their Ohio gasoline car manufacturing plant, but dumped $300 million into their electric car plant north of Detroit. GM says this is a “major new investment focused on the development of GM future technologies.” Looks like their Chevy Bolt is going to get some company.

FUN FACT Speaking of electricity (I was, wasn’t I?) here’s a fun fact. Electricity travels through a power line to your home (or from your light switch to a light bulb) at 97 percent of the speed of light.

Light is the fastest thing known, traveling at 186,000 miles per second (300,000 kilometers per second). That means if there was a wire circling the Earth (maybe

there is!) electricity in that wire would travel around the world seven times every second, effortlessly!

It’s easy to see why the world is going electric ¬– just another benefit hidden in our fight against climate change.

Canadian High School Rodeo Finals: Jackson wins all around, Copeland wins boys cutting DILLON GIANCOLA Sports Writer

Fort St. John’s Wyatte Copeland is the Peace Region’s lone senior Canadian High School Champion after he won the boys cutting event at the 2019 Canadian High School Rodeo Finals in Merritt, July 26 to 28. Copeland also won the boys cutting short go for an extra cash prize, and was named the Canadian reserve all around champion.

While Ben Jackson wasn’t the Canadian champion in every single event, he had a great weekend and won the senior boys all around title. Jackson was unable to defend his 2018 Canadian tie down roping title, settling for second in 2019. However, he did win both the tie down and steer wrestling short go rounds.

Dawson Creek’s Twiggy Esau was the only junior rider from the Peace Region to win a Canadian title, becoming the Canadian junior pole bending champion. She also won the first go round of the girl’s goat tying event as well.

Gracie Chapple of Fort St. John was the Canadian rodeo queen for the weekend.

NPHL considers team proposal from La Crete The layout of the NPHL could look a different next year. A group from La Crete has submitted a proposal to the league and its teams to join the NPHL for the 2019-20 season. That would bring the league back up to eight teams, and could result in the divisions being evened out at four teams each.

NPHL President Jack McAvoy has asked teams to give him their thoughts

by July 28, and the process of deciding

whether to vote on accepting the La Crete team would go from there.

“It looks like they have a solid organization going there, which is at the top of the priority list in my opinion,” said Fort St. John Flyers President Paul van Nostrand.

The biggest and most obvious obstacle to consider is the travel.

Most teams would have to drive at least four hours to La Crete and vice versa, while both Fort St. John and Dawson Creek are six hours away. According to NPHL Statistician Chris Clegg, La Crete’s president and head coach Ryan Becker said in his proposal that he is willing to work with the league to figure out the best options for dealing with the amount of travel.

“We’re definitely concerned with the travel. Maybe we could do a doubleheader, but driving that far either way for one game doesn’t make much sense.

Still, we certainly don’t want to discourage new teams from joining,” said van Nostrand.

Van Nostrand said the state of senior hockey in Canada in general is in a tough place right now, with a lot less teams than there used to be. Including Fort St. John and Dawson Creek, there are only seven senior double-A teams in all of B.C.

“Any time a team can step up it’s a great thing,” van Nostrand said. sports@ahnfsj.ca

BC Hockey 100 Great Moments: Mark Recchi Born in Kamloops, Mark Recchi was drafted in the fourth round by the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1988. He played 1,652 National Hockey League (NHL) games over the course of his long career spanning from 1988 until 2011, finishing fifth in all time in games played.

He dawned seven (7) different team crests over the course of his career, playing for the Penguins, Flyers, Canadiens, Hurricanes, Thrashers, Lighting and Bruins. In Recchi’s 1,652 games, he scored 1,533 points, landing him just outside the top 10 of all time, at twelfth on the list.

Recchi was inducted into the BC Hockey Hall of Fame in 2013 and the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2017. He currently working for the Pittsburg Penguins as an assistant coach.

God is who he says he is JENÉE BALDWIN Columnist

Things change fast. The world we grew up in is not the world our children are growing up in. Most of us grew up with pretty narrow parameters on our view of right and wrong, genders, religion, politics, and personal choice.

As the world has evolved, those parameters have been stretched and shifted. We are challenged to choose a side on subjects that didn’t even exist while we were growing up. Sometimes that’s good, and sometimes it’s just plain confusing. We come under fire for having values that don’t line up perfectly with the mainstream, and that can make us hesitant to form our own opinions about things.

People are so quick to attack us for daring to choose the path less travelled. It’s much simpler and less confrontational to just stop thinking for ourselves and adopt whatever standard society sets for us.

I am often a sounding board for clients who are seeking clarity about some personal issue.

They describe the situation and then ask me what I think. My standard answer is “What do YOU think about it?”. The fact that they are coming to me at all tells me that they are not completely comfortable with whatever it is, but aren’t sure how to approach it, and are even questioning the validity of their own

emotions. Most of the time, they are a little startled by my question, and it takes them awhile to identify what they’re feeling, where the bar is set on their comfort level, and what the best approach is for them, personally.

One of the biggest issues people seem to face is the question of who they really are, as opposed to the persona they present to other people. We can get so caught up in trying to avoid criticism and going with the flow that we suppress our own ideas, opinions, feelings, and needs.

Even though the rallying cry of the new generation is “Be free!

Be yourself!”, what they really mean is “Be like us, and we’ll accept and love you!”. People whose “self” involves something different from the mainstream population often feel pressured into donning a counterfeit ver-

sion of themselves that compromises their own personal values and damages them in the long run.

Another issue I see is that people try to reinvent God. They decide to make Him into something He never said He is, and then they are disappointed and disillusioned when He doesn’t live up to their expectations of who God is supposed to be. When describing Himself, God simply says “I am who I am” (Exodus 3:14). In the book of James, the author says that God “does not change like shifting shadows” (James 1:17). God doesn’t change to suit public opinion. He is who He is, all the time, without apology.

We need to understand our right to take an unwavering and unapologetic stand for the things that are important to us. And we need to let God be God.

Judgmental Brother

Dear Annie: I had a falling out with my elder brother.

It happened when the whole family had gotten together for Thanksgiving dinner. My husband, Kurt, had been laid off about a month prior and hadn’t yet found a new job. My brother kept telling Kurt what he “should” do and how no company would want him if he were to be unemployed for too long. Kurt was polite through the unsolicited career counseling session.

After dinner, we quickly excused ourselves and went to the other room to play with my niece. At one point, Kurt went to use the bathroom and overheard my brother telling my dad that he doesn’t think Kurt has any ambition. Kurt whispered the incident to me, and I flipped.

I was livid with my brother. I told him that he did not have the right to judge anyone and that he was being a total and complete jerk. We left, and I haven’t spoken to my dad or brother since.

However, none of this had anything to do with my sister-in-law or niece (my brother’s daughter). I miss her, and I’d like to be around my niece more often. I feel stuck. I don’t want to put her in an awkward situation, but I also don’t want her to think that I am angry with her or that she is part of this turmoil. — Sister-in-Limbo Dear Sister: Blood runs thicker than water. It’s wonderful you value your relationship with your sister-in-law, but your relationship with your brother is even more important. Imagine how regretful you’d be if something happened to him and you’d left things on a sour note. It’s time for you two to reconcile. Find a middle ground; perhaps agree to disagree about Kurt’s job situation. Though you’re the little sister, you’ll have to be the bigger person.

Loca�on: Pouce Coupe area, Alberta Status: Full-Time Permanent Posted: July 29, 2019 Job Descrip�on Repor�ng to the Senior Produc�on Foreman, the Field Operator will be responsible for performing rou�ne opera�ng func�ons and troubleshoo�ng on all equipment, tes�ng and monitoring gas and oil wells using correct procedures. This is a safety sensi�ve posi�on and will be subject to the relevant requirements of the Birchcliff Drug and Alcohol Policy.

Requirements and Responsibili�es • Environment, Health and Safety must be a top priority – ensure that field opera�ons are compliant to health, safety and environmental regula�ons and Birchcliff policies and procedures; • Monitor equipment performance, take correc�ve ac�on, and ini�ate work requests for area of responsibility; • Assist in iden�fying deficiencies and provide recommenda�ons and implement modifica�ons to exis�ng procedures to ensure op�mal performance standards; • Manage opera�ons of oilfield equipment including compressors, separators, line heaters, and wellsite facili�es including performing rou�ne maintenance; • Ensure that opera�ons are carried out in a cost effec�ve manner; • Prepare and input daily produc�on repor�ng in PVR system; • Manage on site contractors, such as, wri�ng work permits, conduc�ng hazard assessments and direc�ng contractors to the worksite; • Will be required to work 8 days on and 6 days off shi� (10 hour days). Must be willing to be on call and work over�me when required.

Qualifica�ons • 5+ years related opera�ng experience required.

• PFO/GPO Cer�fica�on and/or 4th Class Power Engineering Cer�ficate is considered an asset.

• Common Safety Orienta�on, First Aid and CPR, H2S Alive, and other relevant courses and �ckets.

• Demonstrate effec�ve communica�on with operators, contractors, office teams and management staff.

• Excellent communica�on skills including a solid working knowledge of MS Office and PVR would be an asset.

• Have the ability to work effec�vely both independently and in a team based environment.

• Possess strong a�en�on to detail with a high level of accuracy.

• Strong cri�cal thinking skills with the ability to manage and assess risk.

• Excellent organiza�onal and �me management skills, in order to manage mul�ple priori�es and compe�ng demands with �ght �melines.
