Emergency crews respond to an accident on 8th Street. It is important for drivers to remember to yield to emergency response vehicles, and pull to the side of the road when traffic safety allows. BROWN

Damage to post boxes has residents picking up mail at DC processing plant Canada Post officials note mail boxes at the corner of the Dangerous Goods road corner and 221 Rd have been the target of more vandalism.

“The boxes are unable to be opened and all affected customers can pick up their mail at the processing plant between 9am and 3pm only Monday to

Friday,” said a Canada Post official.

The boxes appear to be hit by a vehicle.

“It certainly appears they have been driven into,” said one area resident.

Canada Post confirmed the boxes will be replaced.

Snow stops traffic, cancels SD 59 buses Blowing and drifting snow shut down the highway between Dawson Creek and Taylor early Tuesday morning. As of press time, it was open to single lane alternating traffic.

Officials at School District 59 say there was too much drifting snow for school buses to drive in the Dawson Creek and area. Buses were cancelled

for DC for Tuesday, Feb. 13.

“Strong winds that may cause damage are expected or occurring,” said officials.

“Strong southwest winds 70 km/h gusting to 90 are expected this morning in the wake of a frontal system.”

Damage to buildings, such as to roof shingles and windows, may occur.

Western Canadian rig work There were 339 active drilling rigs last week across Western Canada, down from 351 working at the close of last week, as activity has softened in Alberta.

There are 12 fewer rigs working in AB compared to week previous, four fewer in B.C., one less in Manitoba, and five more in Saskatchewan.

Overall, 55 per cent of the drilling fleet is active, down from 57 per cent last week.

For the same week a year ago, 354 rigs were active (55 per cent active rate).

Crescent Point Energy Corp. has 29 active rigs, followed by Encana Corporation with 15.

“Marijuana store” in the mall discussion lights up online It started with a burning online question and rolled out from there.

“Is the Dawson creek mall allowing the marijuana store in there? It should be put in a liquor store or beside it not in the family mall,” asked Vera Tirixow on Facebook Sunday.

While then concerned with the size of the signs at an area liquor store, Tirixow also had another question.

“Also can anyone out there explain to me why people want to get HIGH or STONED or what ever they call it?”

The community of Dawson Creek sparked up with some information, education and opinion.

“It’s a dispensary! No different then shoppers drug mart selling perks..demorl or morphine....we all still shop there,” said Jaime Palmer Shoop.

The Dawson Creek RCMP is reminding the community to lock and secure their vehicles while they are left unattended.

“Due to the cold weather, there are more idling vehicles in the area, with a multitude of those vehicles having the keys in the ignition and the doors unlocked,” says RCMP officials.

Multiple reports have been received of vehicles that have been gone through and/or stolen while they were unlocked, the keys were inside and the vehicle was unattended.

This is contravening Section 191(2) (a) of the Motor Vehicle Act, Unsecured Motor Vehicle, and carries a fine of $81. This violation can be provided

Help do your part to deter thieves and protect your vehicle from becoming a target: - Treat your keys like cash. Never leave your keys unguarded, such as at the gym or at the office.

- Park in secure, well-lit areas. Always lock your doors and close the windows, even if you’re only away

Last week, as Chair of Canada’s National Prayer Breakfast, I was honoured to travel to Washington with two of my MP colleagues, Kelly Block from Saskatchewan and Kevin Sorenson from Alberta, for the U.S. National Prayer Breakfast.

I always look forward to this event and being able to meet with representatives to promote our region and Canada’s interests. This year that included a meeting at the Canadian Embassy with MP Block and MP Sorenson where we were briefed by Canada’s Deputy Ambassador to the US Kirsten Hillman on the status of NAFTA negotiations. I was also fortunate enough to be able to spend some time with Fort St. John residents Sandra and John Grady, taking a tour of the White House with them leading up to the breakfast. What an amazing building to be able to spend time in!

I was also honoured to meet representatives from around the world, including Vice-President of Costa Rica Natalia Diaz Quintana, Senator Samuel L. Poghisio from Kenya, Leader of the Opposition Party in Macedonia Hristijan Mickoski, Member of Parliament for Macedonia Vladimir Gjorchev, and speak about common threats to democracy.

Most notably, I met and had a great conversation with the first female Prime Minister of Ukraine Yulia Tymoshenko, who wanted me to know how much they appreciate Canada standing with the Ukraine. Ms. Tymoshenko was Prime Minister from January to September 2005 and from December 2007 to March 2010. In 2011, she was arrested and found guilt of abuse of authority. Many considered the charges politically motivated and called for her release. She was in prison until

The breakfast also gave me the opportunity to get reacquainted with good friends Representative John Moolenar (Michigan), Representative Cathy McMorris Rodgers (Washington), Representative Randy Hultgren (Illinois), Senator Mike Lee, and Former South Carolina Governor and new Chief of the UN Food Program David Beasley.

This year’s keynote speaker was Representative Steve Scalise, the Republican congressman who, as you may recall, was shot last year during a baseball practice for Congress’s annual charity game. He spoke of how the shooting strengthened his faith and how the first thing he did after being shot was to pray.

He was introduced by Representative Cedric Richmond, a Democratic congressman who spoke of their friendship across political lines because of their faith in Jesus. The event highlights how members from all political parties can work together.

One quote from Congressman Richmond that illustrates our differences but similarities too was when he spoke about working together with Congressman Scalise: “We don’t disagree on our end goal of helping people, we just disagree, at times, on the way there.”

This also happens here in Canada. I have built many friendships with Members of Parliament from all political parties where there is a mutual respect for one another and our shared goal of trying to make Canada a better place for all Canadians.

It is important to me that we continue to build relationships with our American and international counterparts and that I continue to make a difference as your representative.

Having great relationships with representatives from around the world is key for Canada to remain influential, as ‘regular’ representatives eventually become presidents, prime ministers and world leaders. That is why I was honoured to be able to once again represent Canada at this annual event.

KUCHARUK The lifecycle of our ‘stuff’….. have you ever thought about it? Have you considered what your kids would have to sift through and organize should you meet an untimely death?

I say untimely because even when death is expected, there still is never a good time for it to happen – we still grieve, we still feel sad, we still are rocked to the core of our being.

We lost someone very close to us recently and the past few weeks have been spent going through the ‘stuff’ that is left behind. While alive, a person derives some joy and satisfaction from collectibles and things, but when they pass, it is up to the family to try and imagine the purpose of the thing: “How important is it?”

Couple that conundrum with the imagining of what a person would want us to do with said possession and your mind is

last minute or more often, why do we not do it at all?

I don’t have those answers.

I wish our alive self would realize that our dead self would have no need for the extra crockpot.

2018 is going to be my year of downsizing, my year of organizing. Garage sales are going to happen and I am going to think carefully about what I purchase: Is it necessary? Is it something that I really need?

Can I live without it? Can I die WITH it?

People say, “there is never a good time to……” and I disagree. There is “never a bad time to…..”

This past week Bob and I have looked at each other and said variations of the following, “We need to have things organized now not later. We need to clearly define what we want for our person and our possessions after death. We need to get rid of some ‘stuff’. We need to update our will. We need to……” and on and on.

You can’t beat the immediacy of the internet – in this world of immediate news, and immediately wrong, when something hits social media, sometimes you can’t beat it. I love it. The answers are solved in real time. Other times they are off.

Way, way off.

Sometimes it is missing keys left/found in a local parking lot that are returned to their owners. Others it is simple questions, answers, and debate.

Immediacy. Tuesday morning - bloggers were reporting a crash accident collision closed the highway. Others say snow drift. Others say a truck crashed into a snow drift and blocked the highway. This was all in the amount of time it would take to start the car. I mean literally turn an ignition.

Immediacy. So it goes Sunday, when someone asked about Compass Cannabis location in the mall. It has been reported.

We have a column that touches upon the march towards legal days, education and medical benefits.

In less than 24 hours there are more opinions, angles, and most importantly, information, than any news organization could claim to research in a week.

Within minutes the discussion was on,

and within 24 hours and upwards of 200 comments, the thread was shut down. Another one was sparked up and the information kept rolling on in. See our story on the matter on page 6.

As I said, I love the internet. Spilling from these comments was the idea of the “Reefer Madness” propaganda film from the 1930s. When you want to know more, check it out. Reefer Madness is a fantastic piece of filmmaking. Immediacy. I wanted to watch it so I hit youtube. Nice.

Reefer Madness, also known as The Burning Question, or Tell Your Children, starts with a Star Wars-like crawl. It alone is an amazing piece of work.

It was a 1936 American propaganda exploitation Many note the film pushes the agenda that once you try marijuana, youth are then likely to commit manslaughter, suicide, and attempted rape.

As per the internet, the film was directed by Louis Gasnier and starred mostly unknown actors. Today, it is in the in the United States and is considered a cult film.

The opening crawl. Set it to John Williams Star Wars theme in your head. It works.

“Marihuana is that drug – a violent narcotic – an unspeakable scourge – “ “It’s first effect is sudden, violent uncontrollable laughter..”

“Space expands-time slows down, almost stands still…. Fixed ideas come next,”

Imagine listening to your favorite record on vinyl mono. Now in 5.1 surround sound. New details to be found, to be sure.

Anyone productive on the Devil’s Lettuce will say time does stand still because they get more work done. Of course, if you never leave the couch and watch television all day like my man Floyd from True Romance, time also slows down, almost stands still, don’t it? Perceptions.

Reality.

By the end of the Reefer Madness crawl, users apparently are subject to committing “acts of shocking violence … ending often in incurable insanity.”

I was going to break down the crawl with what is true and what is not. There is no need.

Here’s the thing – the entire film opens with this: “the incidents and characters portrayed in this motion piocture are purely fictional…”

It says so tight and bright, right in the opening. People didn’t catch that part in 1930’s when the film came out. Most have not caught on in 2018. Yet there it is, if you saw it today, not true, #fake #news.

NICHOLS How many young Chetwynd men in grade seven aspire to a career in nursing?

I mean the nursing in which, as time goes on you mature and grow confident in your profession and become skilled and knowledgeable to the extent that other health professionals actually will turn to you for advice in the Emergency Room (it does happen).

Indeed, the nurse on the floor (that is, with feet on the floor and head on the shoulders) is the primary care person in the hospital, responsible for patient comfort

and care – and maybe even life.

Young Chetwynd women in the seventh grade: don’t you feel excluded. I mentioned men first because traditionally nursing is seen as a woman’s profession.

Get used to sharing the floor with more men. So, if you are in the seventh grade, you also might start thinking of nursing as a career in which you can make a notable contribution to the comfort and safety of your community while you earn equivalent-tomen wages.

You might wonder how to start seriously thinking of nursing as a career. How might you translate your fantasies into action? It’s quite simple, really. You will have to take your academic career seriously. You might actually be taking your schooling seriously right now. Serious might be the way you have always approached school. Great! You’ll have to keep up the serious approach to all your studies.

You also might wonder why I am stressing nursing exclusively today. Here’s why: the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) in collaboration with Northern Lights College (NLC)

and Northern Health (NH) is working to establish nursing training in our region. This is great news and good for all of us here in the fantastic North East. If our future nurses can be trained right here (primarily in F ort St. John and Dawson Creek with some clinical rotations in Chetwynd) the cost to the families will be greatly reduced.

And not only that, the students will get to stay home a little longer at mostly and dad’s and mom’s expense – or maybe at spouse’s expense. Not a bad deal, really.

Why start planning in grade seven? Why not? What better time to start planning? By the time you graduate from high school, perhaps having taken a couple of university-level courses before graduation, you will be well equipped to begin your career studies with a solid work ethic and the nursing program will be ready to kick off with its first cohort at the table.

Here’s how the program is proposed to work: your first four semesters will be undertaken at NLC. This is where you will obtain your basic academic require-

ments, including your sciences and humanities, for entry to the program – another good reason for honing your work ethic before you graduate from secondary school.

Following successful completion of the entry requirements for the professional component of your studies, you are eligible for admission to UNBC’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) Program to be offered here in the North East. This is good news for all of us.

The BScN Program is a fivesemester program that will qualify successful candidates for the degree to be employed as nurses.

Entry into the program also is open to mature individuals with the Associate of Arts degree or other equivalent or higher education. If you have to pick up one or two or more of the prerequisites you will find that they are available at NLC or at another postsecondary institution.

Planning for the program is progressing rapidly and enthusiasm is running high. Pending Provincial Government funding for capital and operating, the search will begin for faculty,

space will be created for classes and laboratories, and curriculum details will be finalized.

The Peace River Regional District and the seven municipalities in the area are solidly behind the effort and will be using all our influence to convince the Provincial Government adequately to fund the capital and operating costs.

It is now up to you. Do your own planning and follow through with your plans. Grab every opportunity to convince your MLA to lean on the Government for support. All of us elected officials will do the same. Together we will win.

Oh, by the way, “time is the only coin of your life. It is the only coin you have, and only you [should] determine how it will be spent. [Don’t] let other people spend it for you” (Carl Sandburg).

If you think about it, the Peace Country in winter could be a fun place to be a nurse. There’s an official rule that says all bedpans must be at an extreme sub-zero temperature before they are used.

Public Notice Proposed Installation at LSD 10-26-078-15 W6M Pembina Pipeline Corporation is proposing to construct a new 30 metre communications tower at its Dawson Creek Pump Station within LSD 10-26-078-15 W6M. The National Anthem is fine, thanks.

As a fairly new Canadian citizen (after over 40 years), I welcome the (national anthem) change.

That being said, I did not mind “in all thy sons command”, even though I am a

woman.

May all be happy for this change and please, please, no one try to take God out of our anthem. God has been taken out of public schools to accommodate new immigrants, what

more do they want?

They came to this country for a new life.

Please do not try to change the laws and foundation of Canada, a great country.

A contract would work I’m with the B.C. government on its cautionary approach to the Kinder Morgan pipeline expansion.

It’s all about who bears the risk.

When it comes to a spill o× our coast, Kinder Morgan bears no risk once it hands its product to some marine shipper. The likelihood of a tanker running aground or colliding with another ship is low, but the impact could be disastrous.

After the Exxon Valdez event in 1989, it cost the equivalent of $4 billion in today’s dollars to recover only 15 per cent of the spill. One tanker leaving Vancouver will carry three times as much as was spilled by the Exxon Valdez.

While a major marine spill is unlikely, if it does occur, who will pay for cleanup and for mitigating financial harm?

After taking a poll of my friends, it seems we all were taught the original “gender neutral” version.

It certainly will not be Kinder Morgan.

Canadian law and some international conventions do provide for indemnity insurance, but also cap corporate liabilities at modest amounts compared to the Exxon Valdez costs.

If the government of Alberta is so sure there is no risk of a disaster o× our coast, then I say it should post a bond, say for $4 billion, that can be drawn down to pay for cleanup.

If a spill never happens, the cost to Alberta would be zero.

In return, I’d certainly support the government of B.C. posting a bond to cover the cost of cleaning up any spill of our wine or our electricity in Alberta.

Site C had 1,525 workers at end of last year Employment on BC Hydro’s Site C dam continued to drop at the close of 2017.

Makes sense with the change in governement, and fall review.

The project’s workforce totalled 1,525 in December, according to figures released by BC Hydro Thursday.

That’s down from 1,681 workers on the project in November, and from a peak

of 2,633 workers in June 2017.

“As with any construction project, the number of workers — and the proportion from any particular location — will vary month-to-month and also reflects the seasonal nature of construction work,” the Crown utility said in a note accompanying the figures.

There were 322 workers from the Peace Region on site employed as con-

struction and non-construction contractors, or 21 per cent of the project’s total workforce. Local workers make up 31 per cent of the construction and nonconstruction workforce, which includes work at the dam site, on transmission corridors, reservoir clearing, public roadworks, and camp accomodations.

There were a total of 1,273 workers, 83 per cent, from B.C. in construction and non-construction contractors, engineers and project team jobs.

BC Hydro says there were four temporary foreign workers employed on the project in December, along with eight apprentices, 78 First Nations people, and 219 women.

The bulk of the project’s construction and non-construction workforce continues to be heavy equipment operators, with roughly 250 employed on the project in December.

Workforce numbers are collected monthly from contractors, which are also required under contract to report

on indigenous inclusion and women participation on the project. The figures do not include indirect or induced employment, BC Hydro says, while figures are not broken down by full-time or part-time work.

The NDP government inherited the project from the BC Liberals when it assumed power last summer, and committed itself to continue building the dam in December. It pushed its price tag to $10.7 billion at hte same time.

A contract award on the dam’s generating station and spillways construction is expected soon. That deal has been under close scrutiny by critics, as BC Hydro’s preferred consortium for the work includes Aecon, whose shareholders have agreed to sell the company to China Communications Construction Company Limited.

That takeover still requires approval from the federal government.

Northeast January unemployment numbers lowest in BC

Documentary crews stopped by the Mirror offices last week for a look at the day in the life of the newspaper. Stay tuned for more information on what we were up to!

The unemployment rate in Northeast B.C. dropped below four per cent in the first month of 2018.

The region saw its unemployment rate at 3.8 per cent for the month, a dramatic rebound from one year ago when unemployment sat at 10.5 per cent at the start of 2017.

In a labour force of 39,200, the region saw 37,700 people employed in January.

Just 1,500 were unemployed.

That’s right on Statistic Canada’s confidentiality threshold for its labour force survey, a threshold at which so few are unemployed the agency can’t release the data because of confidentiality reasons.

The region hasn’t reached that threshold since the start of 2015, when unemployment had been too low report for several months.

The Northeast had the lowest unemployment in B.C. last month.

Provincially, B.C. unemployment sat at 4.8 per cent in January, up slightly from 4.6, after shedding 5,100 jobs.

The province was able to make gains in full-time employment, adding 4,100 jobs.

But those were more than offset by the 9,200 jobs lost following the holiday season.

That trend was reflected nationally, with Canada adding 49,000 full-time jobs compared with the 137,000 part-time jobs that were lost that month.

We’re talking Trump here

A go-to dessert for special occasions

Milk Chocolate Torte with Assam Tea Ganache Serves 6 to 8

8 ounces dark milk chocolate (41% cocoa content) 4 tablespoons Tippy Assam tea leaves (or an Assam of your choice) 1⁄2 cup water 4 ounces sweet butter 4 large eggs, separated 1⁄3 cup all-purpose flour, sifted twice 2 teaspoons malted milk powder Preheat oven to 350 F. Lightly coat the bottom and sides of an 8-inch springform or regular cake pan with nonflavored aerosolized spray. Line the bottom with a circle of parchment paper.

In a double boiler or a stainless steel bowl set over a pan of simmering water, melt the chocolate. In a separate small saucepan, bring the tea leaves, water and butter to a boil. Remove from the heat and stir to melt the butter, allowing the tea leaves to infuse in the water-butter mixture for 3 minutes. Pass through a fine sieve into the chocolate. Stir to blend. Allow to cool for about 15 minutes.

Separate the eggs, place the whites into a perfectly clean, fat-free bowl of an electric mixer and the yolks into the chocolate mixture. Beat whites until soft peaks form. Sift flour and malted milk powder together and then fold in egg whites. Fold this flour-malted milk powder mix gently but thoroughly into the chocolate base. Pour into the prepared cake pan and bake for about 35 minutes, or until the cake appears firm, but not dry. This cake is very moist inside and will fall as it cools. Make the ganache.

I caught ...highlights of Trump’s State of the Union.

Honestly, I was kind of disappointed.

Trump’s state of the union was met with mixed reviews. Some pundits (Fox) are lauding his state of the union as very presidential; stating he did a good job, and that it had the highest ratings in history (fact check – it did not.) Some of us disagree.

Trump’s speech contained his usual rhetoric: America first, immigration, JOBS! JOBS! JOBS! How depressing is it that the bar for Trump’s public appearances is so low that he is celebrated for merely showing up and staying on script.

The only way I can cope with this political climate is through humour and was hoping my favourite, and what I believe to be his actual, persona was going to make an appearance at the speech.

I call him drunk Uncle Donnie. You know the guy who wonders aloud why there was even a civil war, and that we

need global warming because it’s cold in December. Drunk Uncle Donnie will sit at the family dinner table and brag about how he’s like really smart but then tells the story about looking directly at a solar eclipse.

I like it when drunk Uncle Donnie is the one behind the podium. It keeps the fear of nuclear annihilation to a bearable level and provides late night television hosts quality material for their monologues.

I’m sure Trump has done some positive things for the U.S. or at least taken credit for them.

And his presidency, thus far, has not been as apocalyptic as I’d feared. But it’s only been 12 months, 13 days, 7 hours, 13 minutes, and 20 seconds and he can still inflict a considerable amount of damage to the citizens of the U.S. as well as the rest of us.

All we can do is wait and try to find comedy in the circumstance. I suppose that’s what happens when a country elects their drunk Uncle to the office of the President.

South Peace Justice with Tom Summer

Assam Ganache 7 ounces heavy cream 2 tablespoons Tippy Assam tea leaves 7 ounces dark milk chocolate, cut into 1⁄2-inch pieces 1 tablespoon unsalted (sweet) butter In a heavy 1-quart saucepan, bring the cream and tea leaves to a boil. Remove from heat and allow to infuse further for 3 minutes. Pass through a fine-meshed sieve into a bowl set over a pot of simmering water. Slowly add the chocolate and gently stir to blend, without aerating. Add the butter and stir until completely melted. Set aside.

Assembly: Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper or foil. Place the cake on a cooking rack, then place the rack on the cookie sheet. Pour the ganache over the cake, using a spatula to spread the ganache evenly as needed.

Allow to set. Scrape up any ganache that drips off the cake and pour to cover the cake a second time. (Reheat slightly over a pot of simmering water, if necessary, to loosen the mixture.) Cool at room temperature.

Note: If your kitchen is hot, place the cake in the refrigerator just until the ganache sets and feels dry to the touch. Remove the cake from the refrigerator about 20 minutes prior to serving and allow it to adjust to room temperature. PC167240

From the pages and pens of Peace region settlers

By Enna Theodore (Fred) and Martha Zylla decided to leave Poland and make a new start in Canada. At this time there were four children; Mike- 4 years old, Bill- 2Y2, John -1, and Enna - 1 month old. They arrived in Halifax in May 1929.

Fred heard the land in Alberta was good, covered with a lot of trees. Since there was a severe shortage of wood in Europe, he chose a heavily wooded quarter section at Mountain Trail, Alberta, later moving to Mountain Side, Alberta, where they lived for thirteen years. During their years in this part of Alberta, they added to their family- Mary, Vera, Nick, Alex, Kay, Danny, and David.

Although Fred and Martha were blessed with many children, the farming was poor, as the brush was too dense to clear, and the depression was making it impossible to find work away from the farm. At this time Fred heard of good land in the Blueberry Creek area and went to investigate this possibility.

The Federal Government came to the rescue by advising Fred they were willing to trade his quarter at Mountain Trail for one at Blueberry Creek. In 1942, Fred made his trade, moved to the area and started homesteading an additional two quarters. Three of his sons- Mike, Bill and John had finished school by this time and helped clear and farm the land. The rest of the children attended Blueberry Creek School, and a church was built with Fred as pastor.

Just as the future started looking brighter for the Zylla’s, World War II broke out and Mike, the eldest, was drafted. There was much worrying during the war years, but he made it home safe and sound when the war ended.

Finances picked up during this time, as Fred and his son Bill were able to work on the Alaska Highway, built during the war years, while Martha and the younger children kept the farm operating.

In September 1947, a Calgarian named William Gordon Maries, came to teach grades one to three at Blueberry Creek. One of the first people he met was Enna Zylla, and they were married in November 1947.

In April1948 they moved to Edmonton where Gordon tried selling shoes for the Bay, and later worked for North West Industries. They were blessed with three daughters and during their time in Edmonton- Linda born in 1948, Patricia in 1950, and Carol in 1951.

In 1951, Enna and Gordon got a homestead in Snowdrift, Alberta, nine miles from Blueberry Creek, and decided to farm in the area so Gordon could resume teaching. From 1952 on, they lived in teacherages as Gordon taught at Blueberry Mountain, Yellow Creek, and Blueberry Creek. During this time,

Enna operated the general store and post office at Poplar Ridge, located on a comer of Fred Zylla’s farm at Blueberry Creek: They also spent the required time on the homestead, finally earning the title. Also at this time in their lives Kenneth was born in 1955, James Gary in 1957, and Robert Donald in 1959.

Realizing that education for a family of this size was very important, Enna and Gordon moved back to Edmonton where Gordon continued his university education and Enna completed her high school education.

The Cods are migrating north to Dawson Creek

Cod Gone Wild will be touring Alberta and Northern British Columbia this February and have announced a tour stop in Dawson Creek at the Kiwanis Performing Arts Centre on Thursday, March 1st.

They blend the varied talents of musicians whose classical, folk, rock and jazz backgrounds fuse together to create a dynamic and unique sound that instantly connects and resonates with audiences. Through their uplifting energy, tight vocal harmonies and remarkable stage presence, they weave together a tapestry of tales that evoke a nostalgic

Based out of BC’s Okanagan Valley since 2009, when lead singer/multiinstrumentalist Andrew Mercer, transplanted from Newfoundland, the Cods are recognized as one of Canada’s top Celtic acts. Martyn Jones (bass) an accomplished studio and live bassist who has over 60 album credits to his name and an Aboriginal Music Award winning album with Art Napoleon. Rounding out this talented group of musicians is David Mihal (Drums) a studio drummer for artists all over the world who has toured with the likes of Rita Chiarelli, Shawne Jackson (Domenic Troiano), Oliver Jones and Refugee forerunner Michael Fury.

BC regional skills competition hits DC NLC Friday The Regional Skills Canada Competition is an opportunity for students to showcase their talent in a variety of trades and technology events.

Students will be competing in Junior and Senior competitions including: carpentry, culinary arts, graphic design, electrical, hairdressing, gravity vehicles, spaghetti bridges, photography, public speaking, and many other categories. Gold medal winners will have the opportunity to compete in the Skills Canada BC Competition held in Abbotsford.

Grade 7 students from the district will have the opportunity to participate in the Youth Explore Trades event sponsored in part by ITA. Students will rotate stations and have hands-on experience in many local trades.

Tara Bernat, a Senior Environmental Specialist for Encana Corporation will also host a Women in Trades event for female students.

The public is invited to attend the events and support the students in action.

The 4th Annual Health and Wellness Expo will take over Dawson Creek’s Encana Events Centre this Saturday, Feb. 17. The keynote speakers will be Hal Johnson and Joanne McLeod of Body Break fame. They will be giving two talks during the expo and are excited to share some healthy advice to the expo goers. Johnson took some time to talk to the Mirror ahead of the expo.

Have you ever been to Dawson Creek before?

Hal Johnson: I’ve only been to Dawson Creek once, that was a few years ago. We’re looking forward to coming up, Joanne’s never been to Dawson Creek. We’ve been to many different parts of Canada and it’s always great going to new communities.

What were you here for before and what were your impressions of Dawson Creek?

When I graduated university in 1981, I worked out of Edmonton selling medical equipment to hospitals, from Fort St. John to Fort McMurray and all parts in between. I drove all through the area that year. I thought the country was just beautiful. It was a little chilly when I was there, but it was beautiful and cold.

We’ll be talking about habits. How to get healthy habits.

A lot of people know what to do, but how do you train your mind to make it a habit. You don’t have to think about doing it, you just do it. It’s unconscious, like brushing your teeth.

Why do some people take the stairs and others take the elevator? They’re not making a conscious effort to take the stairs, they just know that’s part of their day and what they do. You are what you repeat. If you repeat good things, you will feel better and be healthier.

Was there a period in your life where you had to develop these habits?

Absolutely. And these habits change. Joanne is doing an Iron Man race, doing a lot of cycling. I bought a bike and an indoor trainer. We are trying to develop that habit of doing the indoor trainer, instead of just going on the treadmill. I’ve got to get my setup so I don’t have to think about stuff, like where are my shoes, where’s my water bottle. It’s great to work out in the morning and have all your stuff prepared the night before. We all have to train ourselves to get into a routine that we can work with.

What has your career looked like the last couple years?

We’re doing a lot of public speaking. We’re coming into

Dawson Creek, Banff and Calgary. We also did a special promotion for the Netflix show Santa Clarita Diet. The first night it got 13 million views. We host awards shows and do online videos.

We’re enjoying ourselves. When we started 30 years ago, we thought it would be great if we could do it for a year and have fun. Now we want to keep enjoying ourselves and get the message out that your health is everything and the most important thing you have.

I remember your ads and spots on TV when I was a kid, not to make you feel old, and I think many of us are familiar with your work and career, but when you were starting out 30 years ago did you ever imagine it would last this long and you would have this much influence on people?

No we had no idea. We just rubbed $2,000 together and made a pilot. There was no social media, you couldn’t just make a video and get it on national television. Today, everyone is a TV producer. Back then I took a two-week course at Ryerson University and learned the basics of filming a commercial and then I went out and did it.

We got really lucky and worked really hard. After 30 years, we’re looking to enjoy as much as life as we can. For 20 years we worked 15 to 20 hours a day, and now we’re really enjoying ourselves. Life is short and you better enjoy it. sports@dcdn.ca

Dawson Creek Junior Canucks - wild season, now playoffs DiLLON GiANCOLA Sports Writer

The Dawson Creek Jr. Canucks finished the regular season in third place, giving them a first round playoff match against the sixth seed Sexsmith Vipers. The Canucks (24-10-2) finished the season with 50 points while the Vipers (9-25-2) had 20 points.

It was a wild up and down season for the Canucks, one that saw them in first place for most of the year and go on a nine game win streak. Ultimately, they faltered down the stretch, losing their final three games.

Nevertheless, the team played very well in a 6-5 overtime loss against the Fort St. John Huskies on Feb. 9, and head coach Gene Cooper is pleased with how the team is playing entering the playoffs.

“We should have most everybody back in the lineup, and we’ll be ready to go,” Cooper said.

Star forward Wesley Shipton really likes how his team is playing and their chances in the playoffs.

“We’re pretty confident. We really feel that no team in this league can really compete with us when we’re playing at the top of our game.”

Sr. Canucks and GP set to “tango” on Saturday

The Sr. Canucks dug themselves a hole to start the playoffs, but they were able to climb out of it last week with two big wins. Entering the third week of the playoffs, the Canucks faced another mustwin game in Fort St. John on Tuesday night against the Flyers, after press time.

On paper, the matchup against the Vipers heavily favours the Canucks.

Dawson Creek is 4-1-1 against Sexsmith this year, and have outscored the Vipers 38-26.

However, the games still need to be played, and Cooper emphasized that his team would need to improve their play in the Viper’s arena, where the Canucks have been less successful.

“We have to focus on our defensive side and keep our goals against to around two,” Cooper said.

The Canucks will be without forward Dylan McCuaig for the first two games in this series, after he was given a two game suspension for a hit to the head in the dying seconds of the Huskies game on Feb. 9.

It will be a hectic first round, as the five game series is scheduled within a period of eight days, with game five set to go on Feb. 21 if necessary.

“We’re ready to get it going and get on with it,” said Cooper.

In the other playoff series’, the second place North Peace Navigators square off against the Beaverlodge Blades. If the Canucks advance to round two, they will face the winner of this series.

The Huskies finished in first place and earned a first round bye. They will play the winner of the County of Grande Prairie Kings and Fairview Flyers series.

After four games, the Canucks had four points, behind the Flyers with seven, and ahead of the Grande Prairie Athletics who had three.

“It was nice to get back in this race.

We didn’t play very good right off the hop in playoffs. It’s a must win every game it seems like but it’s a good feeling,” said Canucks Head Coach Chris Stevens.

To be successful for the rest of the playoffs, the team will need to continue to get big time performances from the back end, as the Canucks only allowed three goals in each of the last two games. To start the playoffs, they allowed six by the Athletics and five by the Flyers, but Josh Round has been huge in goal lately.

“We’re pretty happy with the way (Round’s) played all year. He’s our guy and will get the majority of the workload and I think the team’s confident with him in there,” said Stevens.

Stevens also pointed out the play of the defense, especially that of Kevin Swales, Jonathan Jasper and Evan Weaver, who have been a key part of the team’s success all year long.

With this unique playoff format, one thing the teams have to deal with is a rivalry forming and growing with two teams at once. The Canucks played the Athletics and Flyers almost exclusively for the last two months, and are becoming very familiar with each other.

“There’s starting to be some hatred for sure, but it’s good hockey, that’s what we want. To have that rivalry makes all three teams play better when you get into those heated battles.”

The Canucks next play at home against the Athletics on Feb. 17 at 8:30 pm, the first of three remaining games in this round of the playoffs. sports@dcdn.ca

Medals for Mile Zero Judo DiLLON GiANCOLA Sports Writer

Three members of the Mile Zero Judo Club were in Abbotsford for the BC Youth Judo Championships last weekend. Loveena McCorkell won gold in the U16 division and fifth in the U18 division. Flynn Smith won bronze in the U14 division and fifth in the U16 division.

Coach Isabelle Gelinas competed in the senior Ne Waza tournament there and won gold in the senior ground work division.

323 athletes took part in the competition, which is a prerequisite to make Team B.C. and attend the Judo Canada National Championships in Calgary in May. McCorkell is fighting very well and could have a great showing in Calgary, but she has work to do to get there.

There is a very extensive prerequisite list to qualify for nationals. Though McCorkell is the top in her age group

in B.C., she still needs to attend Pacific International in Richmond and the Edmonton International tournament, both in March, a three-day camp in Canmore in April, and four more regional practices in Prince George.

The club is looking for any funding that people could provide to allow them to get the kids to these tournaments.

Smith is too young to go to nationals this year, but will be competing at the BC Winter Games in Kamloops from Feb. 22 to 25 alongside McCorkell. Mile Zero Sensei Bruce Sydnam will be a referee at the games.

Shipton; another mystical year atop the NWJHL leaderboard DiLLON GiANCOLA Sports Writer

For the second straight year, the points leader in the NWJHL hails from Dawson Creek.

Wesley Shipton followed up his leagueleading 52 point season in 2017-17 with 82 points this year for the Jr. Canucks.

While one player usually reaches the 80 point mark in the NWJHL, Shipton’s 45 goals put him just two back of setting the league record of 47.

“It’s a very nice feeling, knowing the fact that he’s a 45 goal scorer in this league, and you can put him out there when your chips are down and the odds are pretty good that he’ll contribute,” said Gene Cooper, Shipton’s head coach.

Shipton credited his success this year to his linemates, Griffin Young and Dustin Bahm, who have 57 and 54 points, respectively. Young is second in the league in scoring and Bahm fifth.

“I wouldn’t have had nearly the points I did without them. Me and (Bahm) played together growing up and have a lot of chemistry, and adding (Young) to the mix really helped out,” Shipton said.

Shipton has been a standout hockey player for a long time. After having a good year with the NEBC Trackers in his second year of midget, he went to play with the Prince George Cariboo Ccougars major midget team.

He then played with the junior A Grande Prairie Storm in 2015-17 for a few months before being traded to the Humboldt Broncos of the SJHL. He had 22

points in 45 games for the Saskatchewanbased team, but decided to return home at the end of that season.

“It was just time to come home and start working, as well as play with a good group of guys that I grew up with,” Shipton said.

Cooper coached Shipton in his first year of midget, and was a big reason that Shipton came back too.

Shipton currently works for TL3 Shipton Farms, and is studying for his fourth class in power engineering so he can work in the oil field.

“From the time he’s arrived back home last year until now, his overall game has developed at both ends of the ice and improved considerably. His leadership in the room has taken a stride forward, and he’s been making his linemates better as well,” said Cooper.

Something Cooper has been most impressed with is the improvement of Shipton’s backchecking.

“In the playoffs that’s an area he will look at a lot closer. If he leads the way the boys will follow.”

Shipton agreed, saying he wants to continue to improve on his defensive zone play and backchecking.

If you watch Shipton play hockey, the first thing you notice is his speed and his shot. He seems to be involved in every one of his team’s two-on-ones, and his wrist shot can beat anybody in the league.

The other thing is his size. He’s a smaller guy, but never gets in trouble on the ice. He is able to outmaneuver every check and always find the open man.

The Canucks are headed to the playoffs

with a good chance at winning the championships, and making the Hockey Alberta Junior B Provincials.

“It’s been a while since Dawson Creek has had a chance like this. The

Sr. Canucks have a good chance too and having two teams win it all would be awesome, and it would be nice to see our names hanging off the banner in the rink when we’re older.”

I never played hockey competitively growing up. I think it was because it cost too much, but also my parents knew that I could barely skate and wouldn’t be good at it. I was always and still am OK with that face, but sometimes I think of what it would be like to be a good hockey player.

I would’ve been more popular in high school, I suppose, though I went to a really small school so there wasn’t much further for me to climb. But I would have been able to relate just a little bit more to the sport, which I spend so much time watching and talking about.

The Jr. Canucks finished third in the NWJHL this season and are currently in a first-round playoff series against the Sexsmith Vipers. The Canucks are the better team and will likely win in three games.

The Canucks are a pretty great hockey team, as far as I’m concerned. They don’t have the star goalie like some teams in this league, and don’t have the depth as others, but they can sure score a lot of goals. As well, everyone chips in.

Basically, the Canucks are an underdog team if I’ve ever seen one, even though their players and management don’t see themselves that way, and rightfully so.

Most likely they will play the North Peace Navigators in round two, a team who depends on great goaltending and

tries to win low scoring games. Yet, the Canucks have their number. Should the Canucks go all the way to the final, they could play the Fort St. John Huskies, which would be cool in that neither of those teams has won the NWJHL championship in over 10 years.

What’s more, the Canucks are 3-2-1 against the Huskies. These teams bring out the best in each other, and it’s always really entertaining hockey. What’s more, they truly hate each other. I know all teams from Fort St. John and Dawson Creek apparently hate each other, but it’s truly evident when you watch the Huskies and Canucks play.

A playoff series between these teams for the trophy would be the best theatre in the Peace. Talented players who haven’t had this kind of success in their juior hockey careers, putting it all on the line.

Then, after a grueling seven game series, these two teams would compete again at the Hockey Alberta Junior B provincials just a week or so later in Fort St. John.

The story would write itself and the action would be enthralling. If you’re engaged by what I’ve described, well, there’s still plenty of time to get involved and take it in. Head to the arena this weekend to watch the Canucks, and be front row for a team that could be but a month away from a championship.

Of course, I have already jinxed a couple teams this year, so if that happens, sorry not sorry.

Alberta and BC should not be included in the oil patch conversation with Rachel Notley. She has rattled on about saving jobs but from here on in all Rachel Notley must do is wait and she will finally be told what will happen in Fort MacMurray and she can begin working hard for her political life.

One year ago, in a small coffee shop just around the corner from Bay Street in Toronto three well dressed men talked about the possibility of Automata in the oil sands. Two admitted they were already giving it a try and so far, it works great and a third was very interested. We are not talking about a trio of so-called big wigs in Calgary, these three in the coffee shop were company COO kind of guys. These were the movers and shaker on the kind of companies that can change Canada’s fiscal stance.

On Tuesday, Suncor Energy, the corporate whale of the Alberta oil sands, announced the next grand technological shift in bitumen production. This is a big deal not just because Suncor is one of the dozen or so biggest public companies in Canada by revenue. Important transitions in the oil sands tend to also be pivotal moments in the history of Alberta.

They are part of our

“national” legends or more probably to the point of being a little unwholesome. Albertan cattlemen who have been trained since calfhood to regard the oil patch as the other source of common welfare and they are a bit demon-haunted and weird about the oil economic diversification.

Suncor’s announcement concerned the phased implementation of autonomous haulage systems. Now this might sound very impractical.

And I suppose there is nothing very romantic about it. What we are talking about is selfdriving mega-trucks. Suncor has been secretly testing them on a small scale for four years and is going ahead with a near-total replacement of the truck fleet that is the heart of its business.

The company COO says its tests show that self-driving trucks offer gains on every front since they’re more efficient, they’re safer, and they reduce operating costs considerably.

That means layoffs of drivers, of course. “The implementation of Automata will change roles and required skill sets for some employees at Suncor’s operations over time. The company will continue to work with the union on strategies to minimize workforce impacts.

Current plans show that the earliest the company would see a decrease in heavy equipment

operator positions at Base Plant operations is 2019.”

So, if you are in one of those positions, you face a moment of difficult adaptation, and this is your official warning. There cannot be much doubt that selfdriving ore trucks will work. A surface mine is the best place for autonomous vehicles. In the short term, organized labour can be expected to grumble a little about safety, as a tactic for keeping high-paid human beings in the cabs of those trucks.

Ideally the oil sands would be operated by one person in a comfortable control center, perhaps in Edmonton or Calgary.

And it would all cost next to nothing.

Your entire life, standard of living and quality of life is due to technology. Just look at the smartphone in your hand.

And that is the way I see it.

Toxic Family Members Dear Annie: I am a 50-year-old married woman with two children. I am far from perfect, but I do feel I am a decent person. My issue is my sister and my mom. I have spent most of my adult life trying to please both of them. I walk on eggshells every time we have a family function, because I never know what I’ve done that they will be upset about. The latest blowup was because I suggested a different Christmas game. I was yelled at by my sister in front of my parents and grandma, and they all sat there and let her rip me to shreds. I think they are afraid of her, too.

One year, she screamed at me because I couldn’t pick up a birthday cake for another family member because I had to be out of town for a few hours. That same week, my mom screamed at me for a half-hour while I was at work, all because I couldn’t make this relative’s birthday supper. I plan and organize family birthdays, get-togethers, etc., but my mom and sister come late, pick fights and make me feel terrible.

They don’t like my friends and tell me so.

They have made fun of my hair color, my makeup, my weight, the fact that my house is clean -- you name it! To them, any part of my life or personality is fair game for attack.

They once took my son when he was small and drove him around and grilled him because they thought he was being abused. He had fallen and hit his face on a bleacher at the pool. My mom was there and saw the whole thing happen but pretended not to know. I

worked for Child Protective Services at the time and was humiliated. But thank goodness, my son and I were interviewed, so we could prove nothing bad had happened.

What do I do? I make myself sick trying to please these two. I make myself sick thinking I should cut the ties.

Any suggestions? Talking to them doesn’t work. -- Sick of Them Dear Sick of Them: You’re making yourself sick; you can also make yourself better.

Stop trying to please your mom and sister.

In fact, stop trying to please anyone. Act out of integrity and with love and respect for yourself. Take a break from seeing or communicating with your relatives for a while. Think of it as a detox. Then, with a more clearheaded perspective, decide what level of relationship you can have with them while still protecting yourself.

You may indeed need to cut ties, or you may just need to limit the frequency and duration of visits. As you seem to have internalized a lot of guilt, consider enlisting the help of a therapist for constructing and placing boundaries.

This year, I find myself going through something similar, but she’s too busy with her new boyfriend to answer the phone when I call, I guess. Why is it that so many people want your companionship during rocky periods but can’t be there for you when you’re in need?

BURNS, Kevin August 8, 1982 − January 30, 2018 It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Kevin Lester Burns.

Kevin is survived by his Love, Tamara, his parents Tim and Sherry, brother Shawn (Lisa), nephew Brody, grandmother Louise, and countless aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

Kevin was born to Tim and Sherry on August 8, 1982 in Kamloops, BC. The young family moved to Prince George shortly after Kevin was born.

Kevin attended elementary school as well as high school in the Prince George area where he cultivated the many friendships that took him into adulthood.

Kevin moved from Prince George to Fort Saint John in 2001 to join many of his childhood friends in the Oil & Gas Construction industry. Kevin loved his career choice, co−workers, and friends just the same. His co− workers regularly joked that he had a "Red Seal in Being Stubborn" which earned him the nickname "Squarehead".

Kevin loved the outdoors. You could always find Kevin after work or on weekends fishing, dirt biking, or snowmobiling. Whether at work or at play, Kevin was always covered in mud and loved it. The only thing Kevin loved more than the outdoors was his family. He always made time for visits, road trips, phone calls, and would always eventually text/call back.

We know you’re smiling down upon us right now. Give hugs to Grandpa Jack, Grandma Marlene, Grandpa Mickey, Buppa Hutch, Uncle Tom, Uncle Danny, Aunty Pete, and Aunty Tami. We know you’re up there having a Lucky with them now.

Jack Haight

December 12, 1930 – February 5, 2018 87 Years Jack Haight moved to the district of Bessborough with his parents Isabelle and Don Haight and his older sister Doreen when he was only a few months old. He loved to tell people it was the best decision he ever made.

Jack met his wife Anita when she came to teach at the rural school and boarded at his parents’ house. The couple married and moved to a homestead of their own only three miles from where Jack was raised. They worked hard to build up their farm and welcomed three daughters, Cheri, Donna, and Shannon.

Jack was a gentle, kind, compassionate man with an innate respect and interest in the natural world. His children and grandchildren have many fond memories of going on “nature walks” with him. Together they observed everything from ants to moose to red tailed hawks, studied fox dens, bird nests and beaver dams, learned how to read the skies to predict the weather, as well as the fine art of selecting just the right stone to skip across the Kiskatinaw River.

He loved ranching and raised cattle for most of his life, still maintaining a herd of several hundred head right up until his health began to fail at the age of 76.

Although firmly rooted on the family ranch with little interest in travel, he loved to learn about the world through books. He was very well read and always had a few nonfiction books on the go, as well as his Western Producer newspaper close at hand.

Jack was a shy but gifted musician, who despite not being able to read a note of music, had only to listen to a song once before picking out the tune on any one of his instruments—accordion, banjo, fiddle, guitar or the family piano. Many long winter evenings at the farmhouse were enlivened by his music.

Jack had a wonderful sense of humour and loved to tease and tell stories. We will always remember how his blue eyes sparkled just before he delivered the punch line. His stories are sure to be told and retold at family gatherings for years to come. He will be warmly remembered and deeply missed.

Jack was predeceased by his wife Anita Haight, his parents Don and Isabelle (Weselak) Haight, his stepfather Jack Weselak, sister Doreen Hustak, brothers-in-law Frank Hustak, Chuck Houghtaling, John Houghtaling, Don Houghtaling, and sisters-in-law Helen Houghtaling and Ann Houghtaling.

Jack is survived by his three daughters Cheri (Hal) McKenzie, Donna Kane (Wayne Sawchuk), Shannon (Darcy) McKinnon, former son-in-law Larry Kane; grandchildren Crystal McKenzie (Shadi Fleifel), Kyle McKenzie (Amanda Wong), Myles Kane (Melanie Gauthier), Megan (Ryan) MacLeod, Devon McKinnon, and Dean (Jenni) McKinnon; great grandchildren Rawad Fleifel, Makai Fleifel, Ira MacLeod and Atley MacLeod; sister-in-law Dolores Houghtaling; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

On July 28th, the family will be hosting a Celebration of Life for both Jack and Anita Haight (who passed away on December 2, 2017) at Donna’s home in Rolla.

The family would like to thank the staff at Rotary Manor for all their kindness, compassion and excellent care over the last four years. 1105 Obituaries Maureen Sander 1936 – 2018

Maureen Sander passed away on January 22, 2018. Maureen was born Ann Maureen McKellar on July 1, 1936 in Dawson Creek to Howard and Hilda McKellar. The McKellar family arrived in the Peace in 1921 and had a homestead in what is now downtown Dawson Creek. Maureen attended South Peace and graduated in 1953 at age 16.

After graduating, she worked at Northern Freightways and met Tony Sander. They had a short courtship and were married the next year in May. Their first child Wanda was born a year later. Maureen and Tony built their forever house in the north end of town on 96 avenue. Tony worked two jobs to help build and pay off the house, and in 1957 their first son Ben was born. Nine years later they completed their family with of their third child Darren.

Maureen managed the home, kids, and dog - and did it with love and patience.

Later on Maureen worked for the City of Dawson Creek, and Shoppers Drug Mart, as an accountant and office manager. Growing up, life was always full of family, camping, and the annual lawn dart tournament. Maureen was a matriarch to all; paying attention, visiting, and ready with a hug in good times and bad.

Retirement was not what Maureen had planned, as Tony passed away a month before her retirement. The hopes and dreams of travel and just relaxing at the lake together were taken away. Her commitment to the church, community, friends, and family helped her get through the tough days.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on January 27 at Notre Dame Catholic Church, and interment followed in the Dawson Creek City Cemetery.

Expressions of sympathy may be made by donation to the Camp Emile Society, with cheques made payable to Notre Dame Catholic Church, 908 104 Ave, Dawson Creek, BC, V1G 2H7.

ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION NOTICE Application for a Permit Under The Provisions of the Environmental Management Act We, Pengrowth Energy Corporation, 2100 222-3rd Ave SW Calgary AB T2P 0B4, intend to submit this application to the Director to authorize the discharge of air emissions (NOx) from a gas plant. The source(s) of discharge are one 1253 kW sales compressor natural gas driven reciprocating engine (Waukesha L7044GSI), two 955 kW inlet compressors natural gas driven reciprocating engines (Waukesha L5774LT), two 600 kW natural gas-fired gensets (Waukesha H-36GL-HCR), one heat medium package, two glycol reconcentrators, one low pressure flare (consuming pilot/purge gas), and one high pressure flare (consuming pilot/purge gas).

The land upon which the facility will be situated and the discharge will occur is 06-19-80-20 W6M, located near Groundbirch, BC, within the Peace River Regional District of Northern BC. The maximum rate of air emissions discharged from this facility will be 11.60 g/s of NOx. The operating period for this facility will be 24 hours/day, 7 days/week. The characteristics of the waste discharged are as follows: 2.65 g/s of NOx during normal operations, 11.60 g/s NOx during worst-case abnormal flaring. The type of treatment to be applied to the discharge is: 3-way catalyst treatment for the proposed 1253 kW sales compressor engine, the effect of which is already accounted for in the emission rate; dispersion modelling determined that air quality will not be compromised due to the discharge of NOx from the gas plant.

Any person who may be adversely affected by the proposed discharge of waste and wishes to provide relevant information may, within 30 days after the last date of posting, publishing, service or display, send written comments to the applicant, with a copy to the Regional Manager, Environmental Protection at Bag 2, Fort St. John, B.C., V1J 2B0. The identity of any respondents and the contents of anything submitted in relation to this application will become part of the public record.
