Beer, Bacon, Bands promises to be a bomb, in a good way!

It’s an expo about all the good things in life – bacon to eat, bands to watch and cold beer to wash it all down. Beer Bacon and Bands goes Feb 23 at the Encana Events Centre.

“It is certainly a unique event,” says partner on the event, Chad Guy. “We’re taking some real staples and putting them together for a fun time.”

Guy notes the affair will be much like a traditional beer fest, for those who have gone. Entrance fees is one

thing, then it is tokens for the food and bevvies.

Guy says the music has gone down live so far on the road.

“It is a great vibe, we’ve got some great house bands and D-Cline and Slopes will be bringing some local familiarity to the music in Dawson,” he says. editor@dcdn.ca

Rotary Lake motion tabled by city As fast as the rumors were spread on Facebook, they were shot down as just that the same afternoon – as rumors.

“Apparently Dawson Creek City Council voted to decommission Rotary Lake this morning. Seems they don’t want any public input on this one,” said Brittany Backer on social media last week.

While many began to voice displeasure, what in truth happened is that city council tabled the motion, which was a recommendation by staff to close the lake and meet with Mile Zero Park Society staff, and decommission the lake and look at replacement options. Tabled means the matter is no longer up for discussion, said Mayor Dale Bumstead, but no decision was made.

A dangerous game that has been well-known to users of Rotary Lake may have contributed to the death of

a young girl last week – and parents in the community are sounding off warning others about it.

“Parents should be aware of the ‘Pulling the Plug’ game that gets played there,” said one Dawson Creek parent at the time.

Bumstead said he would be further meeting with Ministry of Health officials.

“To examine further aspects to this,” adding that changing the “Lake” designation/regulation to a pool has significant financial implications to the city, should the body of water be declared a pool. Bumstead pointed to financial implications.

“The city does not have another $100 to $200,000 per year to operate another pool. The discussion and decision are significant for a facility that has been such an important part of our community for a very long time.” editor@dcdn.ca

Deadline end of the month for junior Dragon’s Den DC

Junior Dragons’ Den is coming to Northeast Region, BC in May and we’re looking for talented student entrepreneurs throughout the region who want to get their business idea off the ground. This includes Dawson Creek, Fort St John, Chetwynd, Tumbler Ridge, Pouce Coupe, Hudson Hope, Fort Nelson and surrounding areas.

Modelled after CBC’s “The Dragons’ Den”, students from Grades 7 to post-secondary level pitch their business idea to a group of live friendly dragons (a.k.a. the judges) for cash, prizes and a chance to compete in the Junior Dragons Den provincial championships. The competition will take place in Dawson Creek in April 2018 and the winners from each division, Junior (Grades 7-10), Senior (Grades 11-12) and Post Secondary, will travel to Trail, BC to compete in the provincial championships on May 5th, 2018.

To enter the competition, students are asked to submit a 2-page business concept. Submissions are evaluated based on finances, marketability, and the product or service idea pre-

sented. Successful applicants are then short-listed, matched with a mentor from the local business community, where they refine their concept, star in their own video, prepare a onepage business plan (with financials) and get ready for the live show.

Artistic deadline for Explosion of ’43 show submissions coming up With 2018 marking the 75 anniversary of the explosion in downtown Dawson Creek, the South Peace Historical Archives has a deadline looming.

Open to any artist in the region, artists are encouraged to come to KPAC and look through the pictures of the time. A media and types of work will be accepted, but the work must relate to the themes of 1943. The deadline for submissions is Feb 7, while an opening reception is expected to be held at KPAC on Feb 17.

The Green Eyed Girl and the honourable mention volcano book right now implies that there must be a season for Science Fair Projects; a season like flying ant week.

KUCHARUK As I mindlessly surf through my Facebook timeline, I notice an increasing number of parents posting Science Fair Project photo’s with captions like, “I am so proud that Indigo and Barium completed their Science Fair project and did such an amazing presentation!”

You know why they are proud right? It is because very few Science Fair projects are completed without the blood, sweat and tears of the worried parent. From the moment that the child announces, “I need to come up with a project for the Science Fair!” you are wrapped up in the end product.

Seeing so many of the photos on Face-

I don’t know about you, but we gave a sigh of relief when our kids reached a grade in school where Science Fair participation was no longer mandatory.

Between coming up with the idea, helping with the experiment, investing emotionally in the outcome....it was all too stressful on US! Do you remember the day when you drove your child to school with the Bristol board display carefully folded into thirds? You dropped them off at the school entrance and couldn’t help but chuckle at another parent who was carrying in a heavy volcano experiment mounted on plywood, “Ha! Don’t THEY know that doing a volcano is so

1975 AND won’t be allowed? SOMEONE didn’t read the rules!.

You ask your child to, “Call when you get home from school and tell me how you made out at the Science Fair” and they forget so you have to think up some excuse to call them and then casually ask about the Science Fair. They respond with something like, “Delbert won this year for his experiment on how fracking affects butterflies. Oh and Marty, he got an honorable mention for his volcano” Your head explodes and you say, “Marty won an honorable mention for that volcano? I thought volcano’s weren’t even allowed! What about you? What did they say about your experiment?”

There is a pause on the phone line.

You know that your child is trying to

come up with the right words to prepare you for bad news. “They said that my experiment did not contain enough data to prove anything. One lady even laughed when she read through my data”.

“What? Someone laughed?” Now I was angry.

“They said that trying to prove that Grandpa is lying when he says he can’t hear Grandma talking was not a real experiment”.

cently lost one of our hardest working health care advocates with the passing of Dr. Albert Scott Kelly.

A family physician, Dr. Kelly was a key figure in establishing the Northern Medical Program at UNBC and the BC Cancer Centre for the North. He was also an advocate for medical services in the region.

I had the honour of attending Dr. Kelly’s Celebration of Life in Prince George

on January 26th with hundreds of others who wanted to pay their respects to a man who has done so much for access to health care in our region.

It was inspiring to hear speaker after speaker talk about the important role Dr. Kelly played in their lives. This included his daughter Joanna, who spoke lovingly of her father, as well as Dr. Taya O’NeillHaugland, one of my former students from my time teaching at North Peace Secondary School, who is now making a difference as a physician in Northeastern BC thanks in part to Dr. Kelly’s mentorship.

It is clear that Dr. Kelly’s passion for health care touched the lives of many and his fierce advocacy for access to quality health care has made our region a better place to live.

Dr. Kelly’s Celebration of Life was also an important reminder to all of us that anyone can have a positive impact on the lives of others by focusing on the issues that we are passionate about.

I would like to once again offer my condolences to the Kelly family. We can’t thank you enough for sharing your husband and father with the people of Northern BC. It is because of his love and care for people that he became a physician and so much more. Dr. Kelly’s legacy is the lives he touched personally as a physician, as well as the many residents who will remain alive and healthy thanks to the northern doctors who are educated in the north and stay in the north.

Dinner theatre promises mystery and meal

A Cold North Night producers are promising performance-driven dinner theatre at Sudeten Hall Feb 16 and 17.

Actors are beginning full runs of the play this week.

Creators of last year’s dinner theatre Colosseum and newspaper editors Rob Brown and Matt Preprost were drafted into service for a Dawson Creek dinner theatre by producer Janine Cumberland last year.

A meal will also be served up

as hot as the acting. The main course has been revealed, with lasagna taking the lead role on the plates. There is also a vegetarian option of the dish.

In an effort to corral meal numbers for the dinner portion of the night, producers for A Cold North Night will not be selling tickets at the door.

Police dog Dirks in on DC RCMP weapon bust

SENIORS DINNER Notre Dame Auditorium Sunday February 18, 2018

Police Service Dog ‘Dirks’ helped locate a firearm when a suspect was being less than honest last week.

Responding to reports of a man carrying a rifle at a rental property located near 92nd Ave and 9th St., Dawson Creek RCMP attended the residence and spoke with the male tenant who was unable to clarify if the gun was either a toy or real. Eventually the male claimed that he had given the gun to a friend and stated that “he wasn’t an idiot” and would not leave a gun laying around for ‘criminals’ to find.

A search of the property by Dirks led to rifle being found laying in the back alley behind the residence. The weapon was identified as a useable and intact M-14, determined to be a prohibited weapon. Cst. Jaime Ekkel with the Dawson Creek RCMP said Dirks is key member of the DC squad.

“His ability to locate hidden objects such as these are beneficial not only to officer safety but to the public’s safety as well.”

This week in the Horizon there is the story of the Stan Stoby Sugar Shack.

Stan Stoby with first lumber built his first home on his homestead – a one room affair on which someone wrote ‘Sugar Shack’ on the door with a lumber crayon. The name stuck for years.

Complete with roll roofing. This was put on in -20 weather; it was warmed up in the car and rolled out quickly so it did not crack.

The Sugar Shack was home to many people – such as Dick Rye, Ted Elwood, Andy Fossum and others. Discussion were had and many a good time held.

Here’s the kicker. The rest of the material - $67 worth of insulation, windows, nails and hinges, was charged up to Beaver Lumber.

I wonder what Stoby would think about our phones beaming to satellites and attached to our bank cards - with a monthly bill more than $67.

Talking about the Natural Gas Age, and government doing business

NICHOLS The fifteenth annual Premier’s Natural Resources Conference did not fail to entertain as well as inform. Be assured that I am not referring to entertainment that might have come with the gala dinner on Tuesday evening – or was it on Wednesday evening? I didn’t attend. My patience for that type of entertainment is pretty thin.

Now that I have made my confession, I can get down to the real entertainment – the pontificating of the economists who rarely agree each with another and occasionally disagree with themselves. To describe the economists as pontificating

is overdone (slightly) because none were absurdly solemn or dogmatic (Webster’s definition of the verb to pontificate). In fact, on most subjects they were more tentative than dogmatic and certainly not absurdly solemn.

That said, I leave you to decide if their conclusions are right, wrong, or important.

The world needs natural gas. The economists told us so.

I don’t disagree. We have gas.

Why aren’t we passing it on to the world? That is the 20 billion dollar question. We have gas in great supply; we have the skills; we have the regulations; we have the human potential to do the job right. Why aren’t we doing it? `Consumption of natural gas will rise dramatically over the next 25 years (economist’s prediction); so will ability to produce it; so will ability to load it on boats – all of that in places like the Gulf States, the United States, and Australia as we wait for our ship to come in while vaguely wondering what to do next. British Columbia’s staying out of the market will not reduce world demand or consumption of natural gas. It will only reduce our GDP and our ability to build hospitals, schools, roads, parks,

and fund charging stations for electric cars.

Maybe this bleak picture is too bleak. Maybe it’s not that bad. Maybe our ship has already docked and we just don’t know it. But we had better sharpen our senses; while we argue about cumulative effects and other things the hull may rust and sprout barnacles or the captain may just up anchor and silently sail away to Arabia.

But it is important to discuss cumulative effects – extremely important as long as we are not satisfied with mere discussion.

Of course, I am including discussion of the cumulative effects of bureaucratic mishandling of opportunity. The impediments to growth, or even to holding our own, when compounded by the dual bureaucracies of Ottawa and Victoria are enormous.

Imagine this scenario: Victoria has come to a decision, at last, just as there is a change of government in Ottawa. By the time that change has sorted itself out and officials are in a position to rule on a decision, the government changes in Victoria and provincial officials are in limbo for months creating a faulty institutional memory during which

investment projects drop out of sight while the competition goes full power ahead.

It all makes sense to the competition.

We are behind in British Columbia in no department except decision making. We have world-class safety regulations; our oversight of environmental issues is second to nowhere else; the skills of our trades workers are also world class; workers earn top incomes. What lack we yet? Some will point out a number of answers to this question of lack. But I think cumulatively we have the will to find the answers to those answers just as soon as governments move on the question.

Having completed my rant, let me direct your attention to the slowness of local government bureaucracy. What improvements can be made in the way local governments do business? Is it possible to make the processes less burdensome while maintaining the life styles and values we cherish? It’s worth a look.

By the way, here’s another proverb from about 3000 years ago that has present relevance: “hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty.”

Breakfast in bed for your special valentine Valentine’s Day is a time for couples to express their affection and appreciation for each other.

Such expressions can be made in a variety of ways, from a grandiose gesture like a surprise trip to Paris to more traditional approach involving a bouquet of roses and a night out on the town.

Those who want to go the extra mile for their special someone can do so with a little home cooking.

Preparing a meal for a loved one is a great way to show that person how much you appreciate him or her, and such meals can even include the element of surprise. Preparing breakfast in bed is a great way to surprise a loved one on Valentine’s Day, and the following recipe for “Mini Banana Blueberry Streusel Coffee Cakes” from Marguerite Marceau Henderson’s “Small Sweet Treats” (Gibbs Smith) can make a great addition to the most important meal of the day.

Expensive house makes the news in the north A $4.1-million mansion for sale on the 271 Road earned a writeup in the a BC Business weekly feature on luxury real estate on offer across the province.

“You have—we guarantee it—never seen such bling,” the magazine begins, lacing its tongue with adjectives and launching into a sharp critique of the home and its diamond-encrusted fireplace and handpainted marble walls.

“With that oh-so demure nod to taste and decency—akin to Liberace picking purple ostrich feathers instead of pink—we’re sure the luxury homebuyers will be beating a path forthwith to go be the people who live in that crazy house up north,”

the magazine concludes.

The property first made headlines in July 2016 when it first hit the market with a price tag of $6 million. It was the most expensive home on the market then, and still is.

It’s not hard to see why — the 6,500 square foot, five-bedroom house was custom built on 160 acres, and includes a 7,500 square foot shop with even more living space next door.

Children’s play room? Check.

A billiards and media room? You bet. Those chandeliers? Yes, one of Swarovski crystal, the other African.

Oh, and the staircase railings? Those were $20,000.

Crumb Topping 3/4 cup all-purpose flour 1/4 cup sugar 4 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces 1/4 cup chopped walnuts 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon Coffee Cake 1 cup all-purpose flour 1/4 cup sugar 11/2 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt 1 cup fresh blueberries 1/4 cup chopped walnuts 2 large eggs 2 large bananas, mashed 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Powdered sugar In a bowl, combine the flour, sugar and butter for the topping. With a pastry cutter, cut in the butter until the size of peas. Reserve 1/2 cup of the mixture in a small bowl and add the walnuts and cinnamon; set aside.

In the bowl with the remaining flour mixture, add the first nine coffee cake ingredients.

In another bowl, beat together the eggs, bananas and vanilla until just mixed. Add the egg mixture to the dry ingredients and stir until just combined.

Grease an 8-section mini loaf pan or a 12-cup muffin tin with Baker’s Joy or vegetable spray.

Divide the butter among the individual sections. Top evenly with the reserved crumb mixture.

Bake on the middle rack of an oven preheated to 350 F. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes until puffed and center is set.

Cool slightly before dusting with powdered sugar.

Door crasher sale in FSJ

The Totem Mall now has drive-in access and is closed until further notice after a vehicle smashed through three different sections of the building this week.

Mall officials say they were called around 3 a.m. after the vehicle targeted the west side of the mall, causing extensive damage to the exterior and interior of some stores.

There were no injuries, according to Bentall Kennedy, which manages the property.

“Given the resulting structural damage sustained and impacts to the property’s utilities, we will be closing Totem

Mall until all required repairs are complete,” said Rob Schlitt, the mall’s general manager, in a statement.

“Once Totem Mall has been cleared to resume service, we will inform the public.”

Police, clean up crews, and insurance adjustors were on scene throughout the day.

A spokesman for Apollo Avenue Sunglasses and Watches said crews are still assessing the damage to their store, and could not immediately say whether any inventory had been stolen.

Failure to act on ICBC report to blame for mounting losses The NDP need to get beyond blaming and start governing. David Eby has had a report on ICBC options on his desk and he’s done nothing with it.

He had a mandate letter that told him to prepare a detailed plan to present to the public. That hasn’t happened and the problem continues to get worse.

Three months ago the NDP talked about a $300 million problem. Now they are talking about a $1.3 billion problem.

That’s happened on their watch. Instead of looking back the government

better get used to doing its job – dealing with the present challenges and looking to the future.

The NDP inherited the strongest economy and the strongest set of books.

I’ve heard constantly about the size of the surplus. Not even six months into their term the NDP are already talking about a return to deficit – and that’s because of their own failure to act.

Am I the only one who thinks that “people in glass houses should not throw stones” when it comes to castigating others about developing nuclear weapons?

Japan and South Korea, yes. Neither of these powers have a nuclear capability, and they should speak forthrightly.

The United States, Russia and China,

no. Among them they possess over 90 per cent of the world’s nuclear stockpile. Who are they to lecture others about the dangers of a nuclear exchange? Maybe they should dispossess themselves of their nukes first.

Know your history The Korean War began on June 25, 1950. Canada was present from the start. In two weeks, HMC ships Cayuga, Athabaskan and Sioux departed Esquimalt Harbour and were in Korean waters on July 31, 1950.

The war was not over. In October 1950, in a massive assault, the North Korean and Chinese forces had pushed back into Seoul.

Canada was not able to send soldiers to Korea until December 1950. Gen. Douglas MacArthur wanted to send the 2nd Battalion Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry into action immediately. The Canadian commander, Col. Jim Stone, objected, as they had not completed their training. He said: “I wasn’t going to throw them into the line

Most Canadians would agree I get very perplexed when someone on the radio, on the TV or in the paper says “everyone” or “most Canadians” or “most Victorians” or anything that indicates that a majority of people support whatever that person is pushing.

I almost never agree with their point of view, and seldom know anyone who does, but they insist that everyone thinks that way.

They could preface that statement by saying, “I think,” or “in my opinion,” but they don’t, and the reporters never seem to challenge them.

Unfortunately, many politicians also seem to be swayed by these statements when they hear that “everyone” wants something legalized or outlawed or changed, when it is only the vocal minority insisting they represent the majority.

When anyone says “everyone,” I know they are lying and so do they.

Next time you hear that “everyone” supports something, think about it.

We’ve come a long way from the shag carpets and drum circles of the past. As a society, we have shed the embarrassing “Reefer Madness” days of disinformation, racism and propaganda and begun to take a responsible, science-based approach to education, research and consumption.

Northern Lights College construction continues Work continues on the $33 million 3,995 square metre learning facility at Northern Lights College Campus Dawson Creek.

The World War II –era training structures and buildings will be replaced with state of the art facilities, supporting both domestic and indigenous trades, apprenticeship learners, and with outcomes to improve student access and completion/graduation rates.

The Federal government is contributing $14 million while Province of British Columbia is providing $15 million toward the project. Northern Lights College and private partners will contribute the additional funding.

Caribou projects rely on data and being ready for anything

Spoiler alert – the secret to getting quality results with fish and wildlife projects is two-fold: 1) good baseline data and 2) adapting to change. Basing decisions on the best data is critical because the situation can, and often does, change.

First, a quick reminder about the Fish & Wildlife Compensation Program (FWCP). We’re a partnership between BC Hydro, the Province of B.C., Fisheries and Oceans Canada, First Nations, and Public Stakeholders. We fund projects that conserve and enhance fish and wildlife impacted by existing BC Hydro dams.

This year we’re funding eight caribou projects valued at ~$550,000. We’re funding caribou projects because their populations are fragmented, and their habitats altered due to reservoir creation, and other human activities. Plus, we recognize caribou are culturally important to First Nations, and are a priority species for our local Board.

Gathering solid baseline data is key.

If little information is known about a population’s status or habitat use, then implementing viable solutions can be a big gamble. And without baseline data, it’s impossible to measure the effectiveness of conservation and enhancement actions.

Even when the results are disappointing, baseline data are still valuable. An FWCP-funded project to confirm the existence of the Scott West caribou herd is a good example. This project used citizen science and encouraged back country users to report caribou sightings.

Over three years, only three sightings of caribou tracks were confirmed, and very few caribou were ever sighted. The disappointing conclusion: there is a high likelihood that the local population will become locally extinct.

The FWCP is currently funding two caribou projects that highlight the need to adapt to change. Both are led by the Nîkanêse Wah tzee Stewardship Society - a collaborative non-profit initiative between West Moberly First Nations and Saulteau First Nations.

One project is a maternity pen used to increase calf survival of the KlinseZa and Scott East caribou herds. In late winter, pregnant cows are caught

and placed in a secure pen where their calves are born and kept safe from predators during the first one to two months after birth, when mortality is the highest. They are released from the pen in July when the calves are stronger and more able to escape wolves, bears, or wolverine predators.

The survival of calves born and kept in the pen is roughly double that of calves born outside the pen and the population is growing steadily as a result. This winter the Society is building a second pen, a substantial distance away, thinking this may encourage the caribou to use more of their historic range.

The second project the Society is working on with FWCP funding, is at Mount Bickford near Chetwynd. The Society deactivated, and started restoring, a 2.3-kilometre stretch of forest service road that was the only road for motorized access to the sub-alpine calving area.

It’s not the vehicles that are the biggest problem, it’s the hard-packed snow and clear trails that allow predators to easily prey on calves. The Society’s work involved ripping the road up, building massive trenches up to 14’ deep, and equally high mounds, and then felling trees over the re-modeled landscape.

Unfortunately, within weeks of this work being completed in fall 2017, a new 1.8 km road was built by someone, or a group of people, over the newly re-modeled landscape. If this new unauthorized road was left, the result could have been another year of predation on alreadyvulnerable caribou calves. The Society responded by bringing back their heavy equipment just days after the vandalism, to re-do their work and deactivate the road, again. The Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development is currently investigating the incident. , which can impose a hefty fine and possible jail time.

The vandalism is a reminder for anyone delivering effective conservation and enhancement projects - be ready for anything.

It’s been over 40 years since Randy, Jeff and Teddy, left the cotton farms of Fort Payne, Alabama, to spend the summer playing in a Myrtle Beach, South Carolina bar called The Bowery. Having grown up working in the fields, the cousins were no strangers to hard work. They didn’t flinch when it took six long years of working for tips and living hand to mouth playing in the bar.

They have also inspired many of today’s brightest country stars including Kenny Chesney, Jason Aldean and Luke Bryan as well as pop and rock stars from Ed Sheeran to Jon Bon Jovi.

Of the early days and their humble beginnings, Jeff says, “I don’t think we thought too far ahead. We were more concerned with paying our bills at the end of the week and playing music.”

Finally, word of mouth earned the major label deal they’d been dreaming of.

In 1980 the band broke through with their first Top 20 hit “My Home’s In Alabama.”

Alabama is the band that changed everything. They brought country music to the mainstream and from side stage to the main stage. Alabama introduced rock style guitars, lights, pyrotechnics and sounds to the country audience.

“We were renegades in sneakers and T-shirts,” says Teddy. “We had long hair and played loud and some of the country folks resisted us for a while. But then of course they did accept us and then after that, our success made it lots easier for other bands to try it in country music,”

“I was part of a benefit concert at the Ryman,” he says, “and I look over there’s Jon Bon Jovi. He walked over and said hello and it turns out he’s a fan of our music.”

ALABAMA’s reach goes far beyond their impact on other artists; their music is timeless and can be heard today as a part of every cover band’s set list in nearly every college town in America.

Not long ago, Teddy was witness to a scene that reminds us that their legacy of song remains as fresh as it ever was.

The band started playing ‘Dixieland Delight’ and everybody in the place started singing and sang all the way through. I had to smile at the longevity of the songs. When does it stop being a matter of personal preference/belief v. a matter of respect for others air quality?

Dear The Nose needs to know; Lately it seems like you are damned if you do and damned if you don’t.

When I was about 17, I worked alongside someone who had an allergy to perfume. I wore a peppery, spicy perfume called Cinnabar and it was my signature fragrance (if one can have a signature fragrance at 17). She asked me to quit wearing my perfume because it made her eyes water and gave her a headache. I didn’t like being asked to discontinue wearing my perfume, but I did respect that she had a medical condition that was exacerbated by my perfume (unless she was lying and just said that because she didn’t like my perfume – in that case….she got me).

So I stopped wearing it and things got better for her.

Draft of the week: Barleywine

Despite its name, a Barleywine (or Barley Wine) is very much a beer, albeit a very strong and often intense beer!

In fact, it’s one of the strongest of the beer styles. Lively and fruity, sometimes sweet, sometimes bittersweet, but always alcoholic. A brew of this strength and complexity can be a challenge to the palate. Expect anything from an amber to dark brown colored beer, with aromas ranging from intense fruits to intense hops. Body is typically thick, alcohol will definitely be perceived, and flavors

can range from dominant fruits to palate smacking, resiny hops.

English varieties are quite different from the American efforts, what sets them apart is usually the American versions are insanely hopped to make for a more bitter and hop flavored brew, typically using American high alpha oil hops. English versions tend to be more rounded and balanced between malt and hops, with a slightly lower alcohol content, though this is not always the case.

It isn’t any different than your circumstances and the choice that your coworker is making to not wear deodorant.

You didn’t say what type of work you were doing and if it was physical work or if it was office work. If it is physical work then I can understand that any deodorant might not hold up for a full shift. If it is office work, then you have every right to broach the subject with your H.R. Manager and ask them to speak with your colleague.

Sometimes we don’t realize we stink and sometimes other factors come into play to create an odiferous situation: It could be a medical condition that is causing the strong scent; it could be lack of proper shower or bath facilities at their home; it could be that they are depressed and have given up on their hygiene. They could simply be lazy or they could be broke and not be able to afford deodorant; it could be that they have purchased a special magic rock that has promised to keep them scent free and that rock has clearly lost its powers. Your H.R. Manager should be able to broach the subject with sensitivity and ask the right questions to determine if the situation can be resolved. It probably isn’t just you who is offended by the body odor. What if

Hey Jude Our family had a huge argument during Christmas about gifts for the kids and I don’t know what we are going to do about it next year. My sister and her husband both have great jobs and spoil their kids rotten at birthdays and Christmas. I am a single mother and cannot compete with that type of spending.

We all live in the same town so it is expected that we spend Christmas together and open our gifts together, but it is heartbreaking to see the look on my kids faces when their cousins are getting Ipads and stuff. It was okay when the kids were really little, but now that they are older, I can see that it hurts to see the difference between us and them. I told my sister that I didn’t want to open our gifts together next year and we got into a big fight about it and we both ended up in tears. It ruined my Christmas completely.

How do I get my sister to understand?

Your sister needs to either get on board with the program or forfeit her opportunity to spend the rest of Christmas Day with her nieces and nephews and of course, their momma – you!

It is not like you asked your sister to ease up on the wildly expensive Christmas gifts for her children, you simply requested that you spend Christmas morning on your own opening gifts so that your children could enjoy the moment without comparing their circumstances to those of their cousins.

Stand your ground with your sister and stay true to your word by staying home with your children on Christmas morning. Tell your sister that you will see them later for brunch, dinner, etc.

She can either empathize with your situation and get on board with your new plan, or…… not. Sometime tells me that over the next year, she will come to terms with the new arrangement and your next Christmas will be much happier.

The standings will show that it was a bad NPHL regular season for the Dawson Creek Sr. Canucks, as they finished with a record of 8-9-1, good enough for 17 points and last place in the West Division (third last overall).

However, this does not tell the whole story, as the team was penalized for having too many imported players, and had four wins taking away from them. If this decision was reversed, they would have 25 points and be one point below the Fort St. John Flyers. As a result, the playoffs, which begin this week, are sure to be extremely close.

The unique West Division format sees each of the three teams playing eight games (12 in all), four games against each opponent, for the month of February. The team with the most points at the end of the division games will advance to the NPHL final against the East team that makes it out of two normal best-of-seven rounds.

If there is a tie, the team that finished higher in the division will host a winnertake-all game, which is unfortunate for the Sr. Canucks. The Sr. Canucks got the playoffs started in Dawson Creek on Jan. 30 against Grande Prairie, after press time. Their next playoff game is in Fort

St. John on Saturday, Feb. 3. “ We’re definitely excited to get going.

We’ve seen both those teams with full lineups and thin lineups. There’s not a whole lot of room for error in this format.

The Sr. Canucks were 2-3 against the Flyers this season. However, it should be noted that the Flyers lost two other games to the Sr. Canucks in January in the Coy Cup play-in series, and until the final week of the season, the story was that the Flyers had trouble against Dawson Creek.

Dawson Creek was 4-1 against the Athletics this season. However, two of those wins came in the shootout, and the Sr. Canucks can’t afford to take Grande Prairie lightly.

Further echoing how close the playoffs should be, the Flyers led the division with 95 goals, the Sr. Canucks had 93 and the

Athletics 92. All three teams played 18 games. On the defensive side, the Flyers led the way with only 64 goals against, while the Athletics allowed 69 and the Sr. Canucks let in 70.

Rick Cleaver of the Flyers led the division in scoring with 22 goals and 39 points, good enough for first in the league in goals and second in total points. Mac Caron led the Athletics with 15 goals and 34 points. Dolan Bjornson was the top point getter for Dawson Creek with 16 goals and 28 points.

For goalies, the Flyers also led the division with the play of Travis McLean.

Both his 9-3 record and 2.88 goals against average was tops in the league. The Athletics’ Darren Walker was a close second with a, 8-3 record and a 2.93 GAA. He also had two shutouts. Dawson Creek’s Josh Round was 6-4 with a 3.48 GAA and one shutout. sports@dcdn.ca

Trask takes Taylor ladies Bonspiel a event for first time When it was all said and done, Dorothy Trask’s team won the A event in the Taylor Ladies Bonspiel, 9-1 over BLU. The team consisted of Trask, Alice Lock, Merilyn Spani and Alicia Helm.

“It’s awesome. I’ve got a front end that just started curling a couple years ago, but me and Alice have been curling together for about 13 years,” said a visibly happy Trask.

It was her first time winning the A event in five years playing this bonspiel, and she was glad that Spani and Helm could experience winning after just a couple years in the sport.

Trask, from Taylor, has been curling for 30 years, and loves being a part of the Taylor Ladies League. Most of the teams that played over the weekend were from the Taylor league, but there were also teams from Chetwynd, Fort Nelson and Fort St. John.

“It’s just a fun league and bonspiel to be in. The ladies here are just here to have fun.”

On the first night of the bonspiel, Jan. 26, most of the teams dressed up. The theme was the letter C, so Trask’s team dressed in a Christmas theme.

The Dawson Creek Jr. Canucks are still in first place headed into the final two weekends of the regular season, but just barely. The team lost on Friday to the North Peace Navigators, and the Fort St. John Huskies had a four point weekend, which means the 24-9-1 Jr. Canucks have only a one point lead on Fort St. John and two points on North Peace.

The Jr. Canucks have one home game each of the next two Friday nights. To finish the regular season in first place and receive a first round bye in the playoffs, they will have to win out, and hope that they get some help from the other teams in the league.

The first step to winning the remaining two games is a home game Feb. 2 against the Grande Prairie Kings. Perhaps somewhat surprisingly, the fourth place Kings have given the Jr. Canucks the most trouble out of any team in the league this year. Dawson Creek is 2-3 against Grande Prairie this year with a minus eight-goal differential.

“We’ll come out on fire this week. We’ll be healthy and ready to go and it will be a lot of fun,” said Jr. Canucks Head Coach Gene Cooper.

Dawson Creek is benefitting from a light schedule to finish the season, which allows them lots of time between games to rest, get healthy, and practice. One thing the team definitely wants to improve on is special teams. The Jr. Canucks allowed four powerplay goals in the 5-4 loss to the Navigators last Friday, and the team won’t go far in the playoffs if they don’t fix that area.

“Special teams lost it for us. We can’t take that many penalties against good teams like (North Peace),” Cooper said.

Although the loss to the Navigators snapped the Jr. Canucks nine-game winning streak, Cooper said they will use it to their advantage.

“It’s not a great thing to lose, but it’s a good reminder of what it takes to win.

You remember what it feels like to lose and why it happened.”

Wanting to work out but tired of the treadmill? For those that want to work on their physique with a fun, unique program, the Pound workout is perfect.

Pound is best described as a full body cardio jam session, featuring light resistance and constant, simulated drumming. It burns 700 to 1000 plus calories per hour, all while enjoying your favourite music.

Bailey Bestward leads classes four times a week at True North Fitness. They are Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 6:30 to 7:30 pm, and Sundays at 11:30 am to 12:30.

“People have a lot of fun with it. It’s different. The music is so loud you’re just having a good time and not realizing how hard you are working out,” said Bestward.

Bestward started the classes in December. She saw some videos of

Pound, and since Dawson Creek didn’t have any programs for it, she decided to start her own and became a certified instructor.

Participants hit their sticks together above their head, or pound the sticks on the ground, choreographed to different songs, each one targeting different muslces. The music is chosen from bands like Paramore, Michael Jackson, and Rage Against the Machine, to name a few, and the songs change every class.

Miller owns A event in Farmers and Mixed

Neil Miller’s team came out on top in the A event at the 2018 Farmers and Mixed Bonspiel last weekend. Miller was the skip, Gail Stefanyk the third, Wayne Radke the second and Brenda Suchy was the lead. They beat Stefan Pavlis’ team in a very close final.

“That bonspiel is always a great time.

I haven’t missed it very often in the past six years,” said Miller.

“It’s a blast every year and I was lucky enough to win it. This is my first time.”

Stefan Pavlis skipped a strong team all weekend long, but came up short in the A final.

Glenn Hogberg won the B event, along with Danyelle Dutka, Oleh Dutka and Patt Sutherland.

Dot Hill won the C event along with Jeff Ginter, Kaylee Croswell and Brenda Ginter.

Tracy Steinke skipped the D event champion, while Marlene Maxwell’s team won the E event.

22 teams competed from Friday to Sunday.

Dynamite volleyball club gets season underway The Dawson Creek Dynamite Volleyball Club is back for another season of excellent club volleyball.

Many of the girls who went to provincials with DCSS this past fall are a part of the club this year.

The season started with a play-day weekend Jan. 20/21 at the Central and South Peace DCSS gyms. Twenty-two teams came to Dawson Creek to participate, along with the U13 through U16 and U17/18 Dynamite teams. There were no medals, it was just an opportunity for teams to get some experience before they started travelling for tournaments. The U17/18 team did exceptionall well on Saturday, beating the Peace River Revolution, the Grande Prairie Velocity, and Chetwynd. They lost their other game to the Grande Prairie Wolves.

This weekend, all of the Dynamite teams except for the U17/18s are in Grande Prairie for the Meerkat Classic.

The teams will be busy in the next couple of months, perfecting their game until the club nationals in Edmonton in May. sports@dcdn.ca

Free fitness events offered Giancola exposes himself to seniors starting in Feb. ...to disappointment Beginning this month, seniors (65+) have two new health programs to choose from. The city is offering both the Choose to Move and ActivAge programs free of charge, as they are funded by a grant.

Choose to Move is a weekly information session where the class will discuss healthy living, exercises, diets, what to wear and sleep habits, amongst other topics.

The class will meet every Thursday from 10:30 to 11:30 am, at the O’Brien gym, from Feb. 8 to May 3.

ActivAge is an exercise program consisting of two levels. Level one is primarily for seated exercises, and level two is for more advanced exercises and techniques. the first level runs every Wednesday from 11 until noon, Feb. 14 to May 2. The second level runs Wednesdays from 10 to 11 am, on the same dates.

Here we go again – Tom Brady versus the world. The greatest of all time against the backup Nick Foles. A rematch of the very forgetful Super Bowl 39. The activist Eagles versus Donald Trump’s best friends.

The narratives are endless, and have been told already, not just in the two weeks leading up to Super Bowl 52, but in the previous eight times that Tom Brady’s New England Patriots have played the Super Bowl. Basically, other than his first championship when the Patriots were a huge underdog against the St. Louis Rams in Super Bowl 36, it’s always been David versus Goliath.

Tom Brady is Goliath obviously, and although the Patriots are only favoured by 4.5 points, it still seems like this one of the most lopsided matchups of the Tom Brady era. But people are tired of the Patriots, and want to believe that it will be a close game. I’m on board with that, but deep down I’m not really sure if I think the Eagles can win. Sure, they have a great defense, and Nick Foles just played the game of his life two weeks ago, but the week before that he played like he did for most of his life, which is not good.

But I’m not here to spell out the ins and outs of Super Bowl 52. You can get that elsewhere from people much smarter than me (well, a little bit smarter than me). Rather, I’m here to say that I’m a coward.

You see, the roots of my NFL fandom came in 1999, the year Kurt Warner shocked the world and led the St. Louis Rams to a championship. I was hooked and a Rams fan ever since. But it wasn’t until two years later, the 2001 season, where I was all in. I still didn’t watch every game, but I knew that the Rams were having a historic year, were the best team by far, and I was so excited to watch them win the Super Bowl against some loser, Tom Brady, that I didn’t know

anything about.

Long story short, it was a horrible game, the Rams lost by a last second field goal, and my world was turned upside down. I still cheered for the Rams, as I do now, but also, just two years later, I started to cheer for Tom Brady.

I’ve never explained this in detail, and I don’t understand why I supported this team that gutted me. I think it was because after that the Rams were always awful and the Patriots were always good, and so it was a remedy to hide the pain. I was sad in 2008 when the Patriots perfect season ended at the hands of the New York Giants. I was sad again when the Giants beat them a second time. And I was ecstatic when the Patriots beat the Seattle Seahawks in the Super Bowl, in part because I can’t stand that team, but also because it was the first time in 10 years that Brady had won.

But somewhere between that game in February 2015 and last year’s Super Bowl, I came to my senses. What was I doing?

Why had I sold my soul to the devil. The Patriots had enough fans. They didn’t need me, this victim of sports Stockholm syndrome, to cheer for them any longer. I had my integrity back and I couldn’t wait for the Atlanta Falcons to dethrone them.

Of course, any NFL fan knows what happened, the Falcons blew a 28-3 lead and I felt like an idiot. Entering this Sunday’s game, I may end up feeling the same way. The Patriots will probably win, but I am placing my emotional well being on the line, and getting behind the Eagles.

I know I’m exposing myself to disappointment, but for the sake of my own integrity, and the betterment of mankind, I’m here to say fly Eagles fly.

Solar myths debunked

by Don Pettit Every day or two, some one million solar panels are installed around the world.

The global growth rate of solar has outstripped all other sources of energy for two years in a row, even beating out wind power, which has been leading for some time. France has announced a plan to invest $30 billion in solar over the next 20 years to replace it’s aging nuclear fleet. China is crazy for solar. So are India and Japan, all with massive solar programs, and, in spite of Trump’s best efforts, it’s still booming in the U.S. Clearly, there must be some really good reasons for this trend. Practical, straightforward financial reasons. These same reasons apply to you and your home, farm, ranch or business.

Yet even though solar has certainly entered the mainstream in most of the world, many people are still skeptical, especially in western Canada where solar is relatively new.

For many it seems strange that we can generate our own electricity, reduce or eliminate our electrical bills, reduce our pollution footprint, increase the resale value of our home or business and even help our home sell faster.

This skepticism comes from, I think, some persistent myths. Here are four common ones and why you shouldn’t believe in them.

Myth #1: Solar only works in sunny climates Solar panels love lots of sun when they can get it, but low light does not mean they are not working.

Panels can absorb sunlight even on cloudy days, as proven by cloudy Germany, a world leader in solar. Modern solar systems maximize sunlight absorption and generate maximum output. This high efficiency means that solar works in almost any climate and in every season.

In our own Peace Region, we have a world-class solar energy resource, with our hours of sunlight outstripping most other areas of Canada. Our lower solar output in the winter, when the sun is low and not up for long, is more than made up for by our very long days in the spring, summer and fall. This works perfectly for a “grid-tied” solar system, when our extra summer energy can be used up in the lean months of winter. B.C., Alberta and the Yukon all have streamlined systems that

make it easy for a homeowner or business to gridtie their solar power system.

Myth #2: You need a large roof space for solar Just like other new technologies (think of microchips and computers) solar panels have gotten smaller and more powerful. High efficiency panels take up less space because they generate more electricity per square metre. New add-on technologies, like voltage optimizers and microinverters, also improve the power output of your solar array, while minimizing the effects of shading. Today, most homes have more than enough roof space to provide all or most of their electricity needs.

Myth #3: Installing solar is a long, drawn-out hassle.

While adding solar to the roof of your home, farm or business is not quite a DIY project (although some folks do install their own), installation usually takes only a day or two. Sort of like having your roof re-shingled, an experienced team of solar installers arrives and bing-bang-boom it’s done. Remember, millions of solar roofs have now been installed around the world. Installation parts and methods have been perfected, all designed to make installation quick, easy and robust.

Myth #4: Solar will decrease the value of my home.

Recent research by the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Lab and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory found that solar panels help homes sell faster and for more money than those without solar. They also found that a large majority of homeowners feel positively about their decision to go solar, and buyers of homes with solar are more satisfied than are comparison buyers. A significantly higher percentage indicates that they would buy the same houses again. Studies in Ontario, where solar has been common for a decade now, show similar results.

There are many, many good reasons why the world is going solar as fast as it possibly can.

These same good, practical reasons apply to your home, farm or business.

Dear Annie: I have a problem with my friend “Julie” that I’m not sure how to handle. She’s a really good friend in many ways. She’s always there when I’m going through hard stuff. She’s generous with food and gifts and other thoughtful gestures. For instance, last year, when she was watching my dog while I was out of town, she took him to the vet when he seemed sick, with no hesitation. And one time when there was an issue with my apartment that required me to be out of the unit for a few days, Julie let me stay with her even though it was on very short notice. You get the picture. When we’re on good terms, you couldn’t ask for a better friend.

But whenever we have a conflict, she does something I find frustrating and immature. She tells all our mutual friends about our disagreement -- and from her own biased perspective. I’ve picked up on this over the years because these mutual friends have let slip things that she’s told them about our fights. I’ve also put it together for myself because whenever she fights with another friend, she tells me all about it. I know that I’m not special and that when we have fights, she does the same thing.

Personally, I think it’s wrong to talk negatively about someone to a mutual friend, so I never want to do that myself. But I worry that with everyone just getting one side of the story, people have a skewed picture of me.

Should I try to correct the record by letting these friends know my side or just be the bigger person and let it go?

Dear Annie: Our beloved family dog, Dasher, passed away last year. Dasher was a husky. She was the sweetest and best dog I ever could imagine. Good with the kids and our old kitty. When I contacted the breeder I bought her from, he said that he is no longer breeding. My friend suggested I look at adopting a dog from the local shelter or a rescue group. I really want a husky, and our shelter didn’t have any but suggested I reach out to local husky rescue groups. Well, I did, and I found a great one.

After I filled out the application, a volunteer called me within 24 hours. She thanked me for considering adoption and gave me some very sad statistics about how many dogs get euthanized because of overpopulation. She then said my house will be a tricky place to find the right dog for. Most huskies have a strong prey drive and are not great with cats, small dogs or small children. I was taken aback because Dasher was so great with all of the above. When I told her this, she said my best bet would be to get a puppy and socialize the dog around kids and cats as much as possible. Luke Dufour 2000 ~ 2018

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our son, grandson, brother, and friend, Luke Dufour. Luke was taken from us suddenly on Friday, January 5, 2018 in Taylor, B.C. at the age of 17 years.

Luke Patrick Dufour was born March 29, 2000 to Darren and Angela Dufour in Dawson Creek. A few years later Reed was born in 2002 and then in 2005, Nate was born, and their family was now complete.

In 2005 Luke started kindergarten at Notre Dame school. There he met Allister Smith and Hayden Lindballe and a lifelong friendship began. Luke was always such an outgoing and curious kid.

The next couple of years were filled with school activities and learning. In grade 2 he got all his sacraments, and then in grade 4 he was trained to be an alter server and spent many years volunteering at the church.

After finishing grade 7 at Notre Dame Luke attended Central Middle School for his grade 8 year where he made many new friends including his good buddies Justin Peters, Levi Cox and Brennan Palfi. For grade 9 Luke went over to South Peace Secondary School. On February 2, 2015 when Luke was in grade 10 he started dating his love Sienna Rigsby. Luke was goofy, kind, willing to help everyone and was always up for anything.

He will be sadly missed by his loving Parents; Angela and Darren Dufour, Brothers; Reed and Nate Dufour, Grandparents; Richard and Carol Dufour and Wayne and Carol Riva as well as Aunts, Uncles, Cousins and many Friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Friday, January 12, 2018 at 11:00 am at the Notre Dame Catholic Church, Dawson Creek, B.C. Father Vener Sabacan officiated, interment will be held at a later date.

Luke’s family would like to thank family members, friends and strangers for all acts of kindness and sympathy: food, flowers, prayers, love, support, kind words, visits and donations to our ski hill. Your kindness is deeply appreciated and will be remembered always.

BEATTIE, Jim January 11, 2018 It is with great sadness that the family of Jim Beattie announces his passing on Thursday, January 11, 2018 at the age of 81. Hard as we tried to keep him, it was his time to go.

Jim and his twin brother Bill were born on May 5th, 1936 at Gold Bar Ranch near Hudson’s Hope BC where his parents James Walker and Elizabeth Beattie raised their eight children.

True pioneers, they taught their children how to live off the land, hunt, fish, farm, work hard and grow an amazing garden. When his father passed, Jim and Bill continued to run the family business until the Ranch was flooded creating the reservoir (Williston Lake) for the WAC Bennett Dam. Meanwhile, Jim had met Mary Lou, the love of his life and together they raised their 3 children in a beautiful little house in the middle of Hudson’s Hope. He spent lots of his time working, shoveling coal, driving truck and finally finding permanent employment with the Department of Highways, where he built many lifelong friendships. He loved hunting, fishing, gardening and spending time with family and friends.

Jim and Mary moved to their land on twelve− mile road shortly after retirement, where they created an amazing home and garden oasis; friends and family as abundant as the fruit, vegetables and animals. His knowledge of mechanics, wildlife, weather, problem solving and living off the land was truly remarkable; a lost art these days.

Jim will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by Mary Lou, his wife of 55 years, children Barry (Hege), Karen (Darryl) and Cheryl (Dwain), grandchildren Garrett (Nicole), Michael (Lindsay), Robyn, Jesse, Matthew, Addison and great grandchild Jacob, siblings Bill, Ruth and Olive (Norm) and sister in law Ethel. Loved by so many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by sisters Toulie, Girlie and Clarice and brother Bob. Special thank you for unending support from Susan and staff at Hudson’s Hope Health Centre, staff at FSJ Hospital, so many close neighbors, friends and family. You know who you are. Your kindness and companionship have meant so much!

Following Jim’s wishes, we will have a small gathering at the family ranch in the summer.
