If I continue to sit here and whine I’ll still be where I am and my friends will do fine.

My neighbor ol Fred is doin’ just fine In spite of the pain that jabs at his spine Years of ridin’ the rough string for pay Caught up with his body but his mind’s sure O.K.

Some ol’ cowboy logic makes the picture get clear And from troubles I’d like to try to steer clear I understand now that now one’s forcing me to choose to complain or to choose to be free.

He’s weathered some storms but he doesn’t complain His eye’s always clear and their twinkle remains I know from the way he treats horses and men That he’s secure and at peace with the person he’s been.

I guess it’s up to me to control The choices I make and the directions I go.

It’s the same way in life as on a ranch or farm The best helping hand is at the end of your arm.

I blame the weather, the market, the banks and everything else when my life’s in the tank Why don’t they help me with all my troubles and strife It’s not my fault that I’ve kinda messed up my life.

The Kiddie parade will assemble and start at the Memorial Arena parking lot. It then proceeds north on 11th Street. It then turns right onto 102nd Ave and continues to the Mc Mile 0 Post at Ke llar south on 10th St. Then it turns right and goes Dr 10th Street to 105th Ave (swimming pool.) How To watch a pro rodeo For the 2018 rodeo season, the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association will once again feature the Pro Tour, which is made up of a number of high-profile rodeos in Canada.

FINNING CANADA PRO TOUR QUALIFICATIONS * All contestants will receive 25 pts for competing. * In the case of a tie, points are added together and split. * At one-go rodeos and multi-go rodeos, points are awarded to 10 places in the go round(s) and aggregate. There will be no points awarded for the short go. * Pro Tour Finals will be held in Armstrong, BC Sept 2, 2018 * All rodeos with $8000 or more will be included in the Pro Tour One (1) go rodeos points are as follows: 1st place - 100 points, 2nd place - 90 points, 3rd place - 80 points, 4th place - 70 points, 5th place - 60 points, 6th place - 50 points, 7th place - 40 points, 8th place - 30 points, 9th place - 20 points, 10th place - 10 points Two (2) go rodeos points for each full go round are as follows: 1st place – 50 points, 2nd place - 45 points, 3rd place – 40 points, 4th place - 35 points, 5th place - 30 points, 6th place - 25 points, 7th place - 20 points, 8th place - 15 points, 9th place - 10 points, 10th place - 5 points The points for aggregate are as follows: 1st place - 100 points, 2nd place - 90 points, 3rd place - 80 points, 4th place - 70 points, 5th place - 60 points, 6th place - 50 points, 7th place - 40 points, 8th place - 30 points, 9th place - 20 points, 10th place - 10 points SADDLE BRONC RIDING To qualify, the rider must have his spurs over the break of the shoulders until the horse completes his first jump out of the chute. He will be disqualified for touching any part of the animal or equipment, for losing a stirrup or for getting bucked off before the end of the eight-second ride. Each event requires a key component to achieve success and for saddle bronc competition, this component is maintaining a good rhythm. In time with the bronc’s bucking action, the rider spurs from 18

the animal’s neck, using a full swing, toward the back of the saddle with his toes pointed outwards.

The equipment required by the saddle bronc competitor includes his own CPRA approved saddle, spurs with dull rowels (the revolving disk at the end of each spur), leather chaps and a braided rein. The length of the rein is crucial as it can mean the difference between staying on the bronc for the full eight seconds, or being tossed off. By adjusting his grip carefully, the cowboy can maintain his balance and, hopefully, prevent himself from being pulled out of the saddle and over the front end of the horse.

BAREBACK RIDING Instead of a saddle, a double-thick leather pad, called a rigging, is cinched on the bronc’s back.

No stirrups or reins are used in the event. To qualify, the rider must mark the horse out of the chute by keeping his spurs over the break of the shoulders until the first jump out of the chute is completed.

The bareback rider will be disqualified if he touches the animal or equipment with his free hand or if he is bucked off before the eightsecond ride is completed.

No other event in professional rodeo is as physically demanding as bareback riding.

Using only one hand, the cowboy must hold onto the leather handhold of the rigging which is customized to snugly fit to the rider’s grip.

The rider tries to spur the horse on each jump, reaching as far forward as he can with his feet and then bringing his ankles up toward the rigging. It’s the bareback rider’s arm that takes all the stress as it absorbs most of the horse’s bucking power. While his arm endures this incredible tension, his hand must remain intact within the rigging’s handhold for the full eight seconds.

How To watch a pro rodeo cross bull. The rope is wrapped loosely around the bull and a weighted cowbell hangs underneath. When the ride is over, the cowbell pulls the rope free. The bull rider will be disqualified for touching the bull with his free hand or bucking off before the end of the eight-second ride. As it is tremendously difficult just to remain on top of these loosehided animals, riders are not required to spur.

The successful bull riders keep themselves close to their handhold throughout the whole ride. This prevents the holding arm from straightening and jerking the hand loose. Bull riding, the most dangerous of all rodeo events, demands that a bullfighting clown be in the rodeo arena during each ride. As the cowboy dismounts or is thrown from the bull, the bullfighter distracts the animal until the bull rider reaches safety.

TIE-DOWN ROPING Truly a team effort, tie down roping demands split-second timing as the cowboy and his horse race against the clock and other competitors to catch and tie a calf. The calf must cross the scoreline before the rider breaks the barrier (a rope across the chute) or a tensecond penalty is added to his score.

After roping the calf, the cowboy runs down the rope and throws the animal by hand. More time is lost if the calf is already down when the roper reaches the animal because the calf must be up (standing) before the cowboy may throw it down. Any three legs of the calf must be tied with a piggin’ string. The tie must hold for six seconds or the roper is disqualified.

The horse which works with a calf roper must be able to judge the speed of the calf, be able to stop on cue in a single stride, and then hold the rope taut when the roper runs to his calf.

Finding a horse that can be trained to do all this well is a difficult task.

STEER WRESTLING

Timing, coordination and strength are essentials for a steer wrestler. The steer is given a headstart and must cross the scoreline before the rider breaks the barrier (a rope) of the starting box. If the rider does break the barrier prematurely, tenseconds are added to his time.

runs alongside the steer and is trained to run on by as the steer wrestler reaches for his steer. With a firm grip on the steer’s right horn, the cowboy hits t h e ground with his legs extended forward, brings the steer to a dead stop and then using his left hand as leverage under the steer’s jaw, he throws the steer off balance and wrestles it to the ground. The steer must be flat on its side before official time is taken. This event requires an extra horse ridden by a hazer, whose job it is to keep the steer running as straight as possible.

LADIES BARREL RACING The only ladies’ event in professional rodeo, the contestant must cross the scoreline and run a clover-leaf pattern around three barrels and back across the scoreline to end time.

Either barrel, on the left or right, may be taken first, but a contestant will be disqualified for not following the clover-leaf pattern. If a barrel is knocked down, no time is awarded, but a contestant may, from a riding position, hold a barrel from falling.

The time is generally taken with the use of an electric eye to the hundredths of a second.

TEAM ROPING Two cowboys, a “header” and a “heeler” work to rope a steer in the shortest time possible. The steer gets a head start before the header leaves the box. The header throws his rope to catch the steer with one of three legal head catches: around the head and one horn, around the neck, or around both horns. If the cowboy fails to give the steer the head start, the team receives a 10-second penalty. Once the header has caught the steer, he wraps the rope around the saddle horn (dallies) and turns left with the steer in tow. The heeler then ropes both hind legs of the steer and dallies his rope. Once the slack has been taken out of both ropes and the contestants are facing each other, the flag drops and time stops. If the heeler only catches one leg, a 5-second penalty is added. If the heeler throws his loop before the header has turned the steer left, that is called a “crossfire” and the run is disqualified.

Chuckwagons Western Chuckwagon GMC Pro Tour The Western Chuckwagon Association (WCA) was formed in May of 2001 to promote the sport of thoroughbred chuckwagon racing in Northern Alberta and BC. One of the main goals was to bring the ‘big’ wagons to the smaller centres across the Peace Country. Another primary focus was to nurture and grow the sport of chuckwagon racing overall. The sport is always in need of new bodies to insure its survival and promote its possible expansion across western America.

The Dawson Creek Exhibition Association Chuckwagon Show is the year end finals for the Western Chuckwagon Association.

The winner of Sundays Heat #4 finals receives $5000 in the Dash for Cash. Top 12 wagons from their circuit will be participating in the race meet from Aug 12-14th.

DCEA hosts the WCA finals at our Sunday “Dash for Cash” The Western Chuckwagon Association and the Dawson Creek Exhibition Association are “GOING GREEN”. WCA will be removing the manure from the grounds to a composting area. From there it will be used as cover for reseeding pipelines. A joint project between WCA, DCEA, Agriculture and the Oil Industry.

Meet Rick Fraser

Year Started Outriding: 1976 Year Started Driving: 1982 Hometown: Grande Prairie, AB WPCA Championship Final Heat Qualifications: 35 WINS:10

Rick is one of the most successful and decorated all-around chuckwagon competitors of all time, 2018 will be his 25th season of competition as a chuckwagon driver. Rick is a two-time World Champion Chuckwagon Driver, has won 20 major show titles in 24 years of competing on the WPCA Pro Tour giving him one of the highest ratio of wins to years competed of all professional chuckwagon drivers. He qualified for two championship final heats at the Grande Prairie Stompede and the Battle of the North. The last half of the season Rick drove two wagons on the WPCA Pro Tour and placed inside the top ten overall with both wagons at the final two Tour stops an the Battle of the North in Dawson Creek and the Battle of the Rockies in Rocky Mountain House. Rick also made history in 2016 as being the only known father to have outrode for his son when he rode for his son Cody’s outfit on day 2 of the Battle of the Rockies.

Rick was the recipient the Calgary Stampede’s prestigious Guy Weadick Award in 2005, the Calgary Stampede’s Orville Strandquist Award for top rookie driver in 1999, and has qualified for the GMC Rangeland Derby championship final four times. He received the WPCA Showmanship Award for professionalism in 2001 and was the WPCA’s Top Rookie Driver in 1982. Rick’s horses have collected an impressive 8 Calgary Stampede and WPCA Equine Outfit of Excellence awards. Rick is a third generation chuckwagon driver whose grandfather was the legendary Tom Dorchester and stepfather was former World and three-time Calgary Stampede champion Dave Lewis. He is the father of 2016 rookie driver Cody Fraser and cousin to driver Troy Dorchester. A very devoted family man, Rick and his wife Sue have three children - Amy, Kaylee and Cody and two grandchildren. Rick retired earlier this season. WPCA Outrider Chance Flad is the new wagon driver replacing the retired Rick Fraser since the Strathmore Heritage Days last weekend.
