Dawson Creek Mile Zero Cruisers Summer Cruise Our Summer Cruise got started in 1995. Viril Anderson had the idea to get a bunch of car enthusiasts together, have a bar-b-que and go for a ride. Around 20 vehicles attended that first year. They did a drive around town, met at the Walter Wright Village for a meal and then headed home. The second year was a full day event with 50 vehicles attending. For the third annual Summer Cruise, the event became a two day affair with a 50’s style sock hop on the Saturday night and then a show and shine around the Mile Zero Post on Sunday.

By 1999 the event became a three day celebration of the automobile with a welcome cruise-in and family bar-b-que and street dance at the CO-OP Mall. The Dawson CO-OP has been sponsoring the Friday night event ever since. Saturdays are now a chance to do something with the cars whether it is taking part in a rally, going to the drag races in Fort St John, or participating in car games. (Car games can include driving through a course of traffic cones while blindfolded and being guided by your seeing eye passenger). The big event is still the show and shine on Sunday and it is still held on Main street, spreading out from the Mile Zero Post. While originally it took up the first block west of the Mile Zero Post, the show has now grown to fill nine city blocks with vehicles arriving from all over northern BC and AB as well as occasionally guests from much further away. The original 20 vehicles have grown more than ten times and at the 2014 show 435 vehicles were on display. From its inception, the show has been inclusive of all types of motorized vehicles. Cars of every description and year from 1914 to current model

years, trucks of every year and size from the smallest compacts to monster trucks to farm trucks to highway haulers, motorcycles with two wheels, three wheels and even one single wheel contraption. Motorized barstools, go carts, tractors, boats and a land speed jet car have all been on display at Summer Cruise. As well as the more traditional looking vehicles we have also had some interesting art cars in attendance such as the flower covered VW Beetle and the astro-turf covered Mercury Cougar. You can never be sure what you might find at the Summer Cruise Show and Shine.

Celebrate Collector Car Appreciation Day July 8th with the Mile Zero Cruisers at the start of our 22nd annual cruise weekend.

Bought the 1965 Mustang in 1978 and drove it for many years then I bought a new 1989 Mustang and the ’65 got stored away and sat until I retired. When I moved to the Peace area I brought the old car along with me. Then one day I decided it was time to bring life back to the good old day.

a couple of upgrades such as electronic ignition and rack and pinion steering. It is finished off with seventeen inch foose legend chrome wheels and Hankook Tires. There were 71,303 of this model built in North America. It is not a trailer queen it is a fair weather driver.

I took the car to Ken at Kootney Car Care in Grand Forks and the three-year restoration began. It was built in Dearborn Michigan assembly plan on January 5th 1965. It has a four speed manual transmission, 2.80:1 rear axle ration, 289 cu. in. engine and came with a rally pac (tac and clock) It has bucket seats, dual exhaust, and

This 1938 Chevy Coupe has been my dream car since I was in high school. When I came across this car a year ago I was so excited. I drove to the Island at a moments notice to view the car and bought it on the spot! It need very little TLC and was the perfect coupe for myself and Judy to cruise in. It is a 1938 Chevrolet Coupe, Porsche Red in colour with a Camaro power train and custom details inside and out. I cannot wait for Summer Cruise! This car is built for cruising anywhere, anytime!

is I had an AM/FM radio/Cassette/CD player installed in the console.

My dream car was a ’59 Ford retractable hard-top but the ones we looked at needed too much work or were a bit too expensive for our budget. This ’59 Ford Galaxy convertible was advertised on Kijiji some time ago but had gone off listing, so I surmised it had been sold. We had a car enthusiast friend in Nanaimo where the car was from and he knew the owner of “Darlin” and upon enquiring, found out the owner had done a lot of body and interior work to the car as well as a digital dash, heated seats, new top and disc brakes, to name a few. It had a custom rebuilt engine to a 390 CID with Hollywood mufflers. She had the words “Hello Darlin” on the back of the continental kit that lit up when you braked. He had the hood and trunk painted red with white sides, which took us some time to warm up to, but we love it now. We took it for a drive and was it ever sweet! The deal was made and we decided not to drive it home as it had a new $800 windshield special ordered from Tiawan and we knew we could easily get a rock chip driving the 650 miles. We had a moving van bring it back to Dawson Creek on a back-haul.

My reason for wanting a ’59 Ford Convertible is that I had one back in 1962 when I courted Sharon 54 years ago! It brings back old memories.

The only thing I have done to it since purchasing,

Last fall the Rotary Clubs of Dawson Creek put out a call for help in packaging 300,000 meals for underdeveloped countries and areas in need of nutritional meals through Stop Hunger Now, an international hunger relief organization that coordinates the distribution of food and other life-saving aid around the world. The Mile Zero Cruisers stepped right up and answered the call for volunteers with great numbers. And it was a whole lot of fun too! We are always ready to help out our community.

Pontiac

You are lookin’ at a 1966 Pontiac Grande Parisienne. It was brought over from Alberta and then a frame off restoration began. Dikk’s Shop in Dawson Creek, BC did all the rebuild of the frame and body. No trunk, no floor panels, no carpet it all was missing or so bad it needed replacing. Fender skirts and chrome strips were custom built as this car did not come stock with them. So many other things like a working 327 with double bump heads, a twospeed tranny, and working rear end is always nice to have. Dikk pretty much did it all. I painted it with the shiniest endure paint, did the wiring, pretty much every nut, bolt and spring has all been replaced. Kube did the tranny, Joe did the interior and viola 12 months later, “Lucky Me” was cruising’ in my so cool ‘66.

Summer Cruise Souvenir T-shirts For years Summer Cruise has been known for its high quality T-shirts and interesting art work. Theresa, at the Promo Shoppe in Dawson Creek has always given great advice and great prices. The last few years the club has stepped it up with the shirts and has had them designed by world famous cartoonist, George Trosley. With Theresa’s help, we have been able to transfer George’s art work to the shirts with great color and detail.

famous characters are brothers Krass and Bernie who have ripped apart and built tons of wild rods over the 20 years they appeared in magazines. To have such a famous artist so well loved by hot rodders everywhere makes the Summer Cruise T-shirts true collectors items.

Each year the Mile Zero Cruisers meet in the winter and vote on their choice for the cars to feature on the next year’s T-shirt. The club picks from the previous year’s winners and it is always fun to watch a driver George Trosley is a professional cartoonist famous for his work on such magazines as CARtoons, show up at the cruise and discover that their vehicle CYCLEtoons, Hot Rod Cartoons, and others. 1929 FORD MODEL A ‘A’ Roadster Pickup

The project started with the remains of a stock Model A pickup we bought from Court Wright in the early ‘90s. Court had inherited the truck from his Dad, Walter Wright, who had brought the truck to Dawson Creek from Hudson Hope.

Sean Armitage Dawson Creek, BC

I insured the truck in July 2006 and have been driving it every summer since. In 2009 my Dad and I took the truck on a trip to the Bonneville Salt Flats. We cruised around on the salt and watched the land speed races. The truck is not finished but has been a lot of fun to drive while we continue to look for more old parts to add to the build.

The truck is now powered by a 1953 Ford flathead V8. The motor has an Edelbrock intake manifold with two Stromberg carburetors, an old Mallory distributor, Offenhauser Aluminum heads a Schneider Camshaft and home built headers. The truck has a 4” dropped axle in the front. We used the brakes, wheels, 3 speed transmission, rear end, steering column and steering wheel out of a 1940 Ford Coupe to upgrade the drivetrain.  The body is a stock 1929 Ford Model A Roadster Pickup. Our intention was to build an Old Hot Rod like they did back in the early 50’s using mostly old Ford parts available then.

We purchased our Model T during the winter of 2014-2015. It was in the back of a storage building in Alberta so we brought it home in April 2015. Of course we were anxious to get it on the road for the summer so we only fixed a few things to make it road worthy. Also added many chrome parts to the motor at that time and removed the 8 track stereo! During the winter of 2015-2016 it had a frame-off restoration. It started with a yellow body and brown fenders, we stayed with the yellow body but changed the fenders to a dark grey. The biggest noticeable change is the interior where everything was refinished or replaced. Also installed new small block Chev motor & turbo 350 transmission, and rebuilt the rear end. So the car is now Ford tough with Chevy stuff! We’ve enjoyed our Thursday nights with the Mile Zero Cruisers and being part of the annual car show.

‘labour of love’

The story of my ‘35 Ford starts in 1956 when my Grandpa (Ray Scheck) bought this 5 Window Coupe off of the unsaleable trade lot and turned it into a stock car sponsored by Zero Service (ESSO Station) 1956 was the first year of the Dawson Creek Auto Racing Association and they held the races on a track built inside the horse track of the fairgrounds! He raced it a couple seasons, but after a good rollover scared my Grandma, he got rid of it. Fast forward to 1997, Ed Savard and I were talking cars and I told him I’d like to find a 35 Ford to re-create my Grandpa’s old car and all he said was “Oh, those are out there.” A few days later he pulled into my work with none other than my Grandpa’s original 35 on his trailer!! Turns out he had found the beat up old wreck out 17th Street and had it sold to a guy from Vancouver but after finding out where it came from, he sold it to me for $250 and a 59 Chevy front clip with trade. It sat until I found enough parts to start the rebuild. Then I did a full frame off rebuild. It’s on the original frame, 4” dropped axle, 1957 9” Ford, 350 Chevy, 4-speed, Pretty standard hot rod stuff. I chopped it 2.5” and sprayed it

a close red to the colour my grandpa painted it. It’s my most favourite car in the world and I like to think that how it found me was meant to be!
