The changing face for Landlords

Peace of mind is priceless, choosing to have your property professionally managed is a big commitment.

Historically, many New Zealand landlords prefer to go down the ‘do it yourself route, which is especially true if only one or two investment properties are involved.

While many investors choose to do this and self manage their rental properties, they often do so without fully understanding the scope of what’s involved or the very real risks that are present if it’s not done properly

The role of a landlord or property manager these days is so much more than simply coordinating tenancies and rental payments Legislation and compliance now play a significant role in terms of both the successful management of a tenancy and also the consequences that come from non compliance or failing to meet legal obligations.

As our industry sees ever increasing layers of compliance and legislation, you need to trust you have the right people on board, with the right skills and knowledge to meet these changes

Lynx Property Management makes sure to take care of the property management process and provide you with peace of mind knowing your property is in good hands and that we’re doing everything we can for you and your tenant.

Getting to know your tsunami risk

The government recently launched the first nationwide tsunami evacuation map, a site that brings together tsunami evacuation zone data from councils all around the country.

The site allows people to type in their address to find if it sits within a tsunami evacuation zone. The zone is broken down into red, orange and yellow areas, with red being the most common evacuation zone in the event of any tsunami warning, and orange and yellow being areas that may need evacuating for a large tsunami or very large tsunami respectively.

Rather than solid ribbons of red, orange and yellow fanning inward from the coastline, the zones are pretty irregular, with some red and orange areas located quite far from the beach due to both flatness of the land and waterways such as the estuary.

Pop your address into the NZ map at https://getready. govt.nz/en/emergency/tsunami/ or the Auckland Council site Auckland’s Hazard Viewer to see if you live in an evacuation zone. It’s also a good idea to check out any other addresses where you or your children visit regularly, such as work places and after school activity venues, to see which zone they fall into.

Auckland Emergency Management General Manager

Paul Amaral says:

‘All of Auckland's coastline is vulnerable to tsunami and being prepared is the best way to stay safe. Find out if you live, work or play in an area at risk of tsunami so you can plan ahead and map out your evacuation routes. A tsunami can occur at any time so it’s important to start these conversations early with your family and friends to make sure you know where to go and what to do in an emergency.’

It’s quite fun checking out where the zones begin and end – we found out the yellow one stops right at the bottom of our driveway.

The GreenSpot

We love our coffee in Aotearoa. We also love nature and yet it is estimated that New Zealanders discard 295 MILLION single use cups a year! Having this fill up our landfill is bad enough, but often they end up in the environment where the plastic lining can’t break down. Compostable cups are a step up but it’s likely that only 1 in 400 actually end up in their required commercial composting facility. Bringing your own reusable mug is clearly the best option, if only there was an easier way, such as borrowing cups from the cafés… Actually – there is!

Again Again is a technology platform that enables companies to loan and track packaging with the simple use of an app. Customers have two weeks to return their loan cup to any local, participating café, where it will be commercially washed and put back into this viable, circular economy.

Havana Coffee Works have recently partnered with this innovative company, growing the network across the motu. Our local participant is Goodhub Eatery in Ōrewa. Encourage your regular café to become part this coffee cup ‘library’ so they can help you get a guilt-free caffeine hit. They will save on the costs of disposable packaging and can even brand their cups to benefit from advertising.

Plus, it’s not just cups, as Again Again have recently launched their container system. Their platform can be used to replace sushi and curry containers, beer flagons and more, with a fleet of double-walled stainless-steel products. With your help they can reach their goal of making waste-free takeaways the norm and avoid 3.35 billion single use packaging units

becoming 84,000 tonnes of waste per year. If you’re bringing your own crockery – excellent work! Otherwise, try supporting this reuse system and have your eco-conscious takeaways again and Again Again.

Children and teens with Type 1 diabetes experience detrimental changes in brain structure and function, including lower IQ, and prior research has shown these differences are related to high blood sugars.

According to a pilot study (co-led by Stanford School of Medicine and Nemours Children’s Health System) tightly controlling blood sugar can reduce brainstructure and function differences in teens with diabetes. The finding follows decades of evidence that better blood sugar control prevents long-term diabetes complications in other organs.

The study’s lead author, Dr Allan Reiss says ‘It strongly suggests that with significantly improved glucose control, one can attenuate and perhaps even reverse some of the deleterious effects of diabetes on the brain and cognition.’ He noted ‘The fact that both brain structure and cognitive abilities improved after only six months is especially striking.

I would have been happy if we had just seen brain structure improvements, but we saw both improvement in performance and changes in the brain that strongly suggested a trend toward normality.’

Jacka (Professor of Nutritional Psychiatry & Director at the centre) lead a team in the SMILES study (Supporting the Modification of lifestyle in Lowered Emotional States). It was a randomised controlled trial of dietary improvement for adults with major depression. The results showed that participants in the dietary intervention group had a much greater reduction in their depressive symptoms over the three-month period, compared to those in the social support group.

At the end of the trial, a third of those in the dietary support group met criteria for remission of major depression, compared to eight percent of those in the social support group. This is a significant finding that should make us sit up and take note.

Coastguard

Recognition for our volunteers

Last month Coastguard Hibiscus attended the Coastguard New Zealand conference in Christchurch. This event was the first time in three years that all 63 Coastguard units have had the opportunity to connect, share concerns and challenges, and celebrate success and excellence.

For the first time we had two nominations from Hibiscus. Millwater resident Rachel Hessey was nominated for Rescue Volunteer of the Year and Matt Van Der Linden for Outstanding Leader of the Year. Both nominations were well deserved.

The rescue vessel volunteer award recognises a wet crew member whose commitment, contribution and dedication to their role on board a Coastguard Rescue Vessel has been continually demonstrated to their unit. The outstanding leader award recognises those who make a difference and lead the way. These volunteers are held in high regard for the leadership, initiative and the commitment

they bring to their unit and Coastguard.

We are extremely proud that Rachel Hessey won not only the Rescue Volunteer of the Year award but also took out the Supreme Award, which commends an individual who has demonstrated the utmost excellence in their commitment to the work they do in Coastguard. This is the top award and is highly contested, but Rachel is a truly worthy recipient who gives her heart and soul to Coastguard Hibiscus. Anyone who knows Rachel will tell you that for her, 100% is not enough!

Coastguard is powered by volunteers. In the last year, our 1,963 volunteers gave an incredible 261,000 hours of their time to saving lives at sea – a remarkable statistic by any measure. They conducted over 3,200 operations and brought more than 7,900 people home to safety.

To update you on our crew base, last Thursday it was floated around to a berth directly in front of Hibiscus Rescue 1 at Gulf Harbour Marina. Finishing touches are being completed and then the fitout will commence. The base will serve as shelter from the elements for our crew as well as a training base. It will allow us to store some of our equipment in a nice dry environment rather than on the rescue vessel. It has been a long time coming and I'm looking forward to the grand opening later in the year.

We are looking for sponsorship with items such as kitchenettes and cabinetry, so if you can help please contact me on crewchief@ coastguardhibiscus.org.nz. Any donations are also greatly appreciated as we are funding the majority of this project ourselves.

A tale 70 years in the making

On 22 November this year Silverdale Fire Station volunteers are celebrating a whopping 70 years of service to our local community. That’s 70 years of fighting fires, assisting in medical emergencies and dealing with their biggest foes – poorly timed fire alarms going off in the middle of the night.

The service began when a series of scrub fires around the Hibiscus Coast area caused locals a great deal of concern. As a result, the Silverdale Volunteer Fire Service was born. They may have begun as volunteers who put out fires in the area, but they later progressed to car crash assistance, medical emergencies, smoke detector assistance and anything else to improve their community as well.

For the first five years, the Silverdale volunteers didn’t even have a fire truck to get around in, only getting their first one in 1957. After previously running from the site in Silverdale Street that the ambulance service now occupies, the Silverdale Fire Station was built and has sat proudly atop a grassy bank off Hibiscus Coast Highway since 14 February 1970 – a station with two trucks, an operational support van, a tanker and one busy team. In 1978 they got their very first set of ‘jaws of life’ rescue equipment, broadening their abilities to help even further.

The service was run solely by volunteers for 27 years until increased demand saw career firefighters join the station to fill in with the timeconsuming work of keeping everyone safe while the volunteers had to go to their day jobs. Our neighbourhood continues to stay protected by many – the Silverdale Fire Service have dedicated countless hours to the wellbeing of our residents.

For the volunteers, they earn the satisfaction of a job well done, saving lives in the community and making a difference. The skills they learn through training, such as first aid medical experience, quick thinking, overall fitness and teamwork, are valuable to any member of the community.

Fire and Emergency are always looking for new recruits, no matter their background experience. Those with other jobs or even students, if anyone is keen to lend a hand and try something new, give it a go! For more information on how to sign up, visit https://www.fireandemergency.nz/

To those in the volunteer fire service, thank you for all your hard work and for keeping us safe!

A steak and cheese pie has the magical capability of dusting off the cobwebs when you’ve had a good Saturday night with friends or putting a smile on your face with the first bite when you’ve had an awful breakup or a bad day at work.

But what is it that makes a pie a great pie, I hear you ask?

A pie that commands respect should have a flaky top. Not flaky enough to explode into every crevice of your car’s upholstery when you bite into it, but flaky enough to leave a telltale sign on your jumper that you’ve indulged in a sneaky treat. The bottom pie case should be not be doughy, but firm as it holds your molten hot meat and cheese (you know what I’m talking about – meat and cheese heated to the surface temperature of the planet Mercury). We’re looking for gravy that is rich and thick and meat that is soft and plentiful. But the bit that puts the whizz into wizard though? The cheese. Gloopy, tasty cheese. For the pie to be perfect, we’re looking for the right balance of these elements and I’m also going to check the dough/pastry-to-meat ratio, as a good indicator of value for money.

The Coast is blessed with pie shops so I didn’t have to venture far to try six pies. On my favourites list are three pies, with a fourth special mention that I couldn’t justify giving the win to as it’s not local, strictly speaking. My favourites were HILO Bakery, No’Na Bakery and Wild Grain Bakery. I will also review Dairy Flat Bakery as Michelle from Roasted’n’Toasted (best toasties on the Coast) insisted I go and I’m so glad I did. Also, try the steak and red wine pie while you’re there. You’ll thank me for it

HILO Home Cookery –

3 Silverdale Street, Silverdale

Price $5.50

Hilo claims a Gourmet Pie. The Pie has a pastry-to-meat ratio of 30%, the lowest in our taste test, but the top pastry is deliciously flaky and the meat rich and chunky (though slightly too peppery for a steak and cheese pie). The cheese is super gourmet and overall the pie is well balanced. The only issue is the slightly heavy base. It is almost undercooked, but if you’re a foodie, the slight chewiness of the base is quite delightful.

No'Na Bakery –5/175 Millwater Parkway, Millwater

Price $6.00

The pie steps up to a respectable position in the taste test. While the pastry is magical, the meat is

Steak and cheese, please

up for it as it's rich and deeply flavoursome. Its generous 40% meat-to-pastry ratio makes it a wholesome pie and one I’d go back for. The top crust is slightly overly-flaky and leaves tell-tale trace which mean I have to explain to my wife why I’ve eaten yet another pie. It’s for the benefit of Millwater and the Coast my Love, for the greater good. Great pie.

Wild Grain Bakery –16 Wainui Road, Silverdale Price $6.00

I always take exception to a café, restaurant or tyre dealership which claims to have the best of something via an accolade from 2013 (Yes, I’m looking at you through scathing eyes chippy shop). The same goes for Wild Grain, BUT they back it up with award after award. The pie warmers and pastry cabinets look like the Crusaders Trophy cabinet with accolades and trophies stacked high and my word it’s a great pie. Great pie. Everything about it is great. It has a meat-topastry ratio of 40% and everything is delicious. The gravy is rich, the meat is soft and plentiful. The only fault is the poofy-top pastry. One bite and bam! There’s pastry in crevices of my car where you don’t want pastry. Super pie score 49/60

Special mention goes to the not-too-distant Dairy Flat Bakery. Sorry, but they’re not quite local enough for me to award them top local pie, but I would if I could, and I advise you to take the drive. Turn up early though as truckies and pilots nab the pies early in the morning. Theoretical pie score, in case I was judging, 52/60.

I don’t want to see pastry for a month. It’s been a pleasure, my flaky friends, but I’m up to my eyeballs in steak and cheese. I snap my stretchy pants' waistband in salute to you all.

November has a big line-up of exhibitions and events planned at the Estuary Arts Centre. The Peninsula Weavers are an enthusiastic group of weavers who gather together on the fourth Tuesday of each month in the Pohutukawa Room of the Whangaparaoa Library from 11am to 2pm. Their aim is to share information and provide support and inspiration to each other. They will be running a series of workshops and talks during the Creative Fibre Spring Festival. Participating weavers include Lorraine Steel, Janie Gummer, Terry Wyatt Lai Lam, Lenie Besseling, Linda MacDonald, Rosemary Burnby, Judy Utting, Sue Mills and Hilde Blank.

Jia Ren’s painting and pastel drawings focus on daily life within Oriental scenes such as the graceful historical architectures in Nepal. She is also fascinated by the elegant ancient female figures from China and Japan. Jia combines the traditional line drawing method, calligraphy and western techniques such as shade and perspective.

In the smaller galleries, local Hibiscus artists will be featured. Yvonne Gray is an award winning acrylic painter, printmaker and mixed media artist who conveys her thoughts about a place or emotion in an impressionistic way in her work, often including figures. Logan Simich-Burr is a young emerging artist with his very first solo exhibition featuring 12 artworks that reflect our ‘Kiwi as’ lifestyle.

The Hibiscus Coast Printmakers will also be holding their annual exhibition titled ‘Places’. This local group was formed at the end of 2020 and is comprised of beginners through to advanced printmakers who work in a range of print making disciplines, including lino and wood cuts, dry-point, collagraph, etching, cyanotype and monoprinting. This dedicated group regularly meet at the Estuary Art Centre on Fridays to work on their craft, and they also hold workshops to learn new techniques.

On Saturday, 12 November from 2pm to 7pm, come on down to the Centre for our Pre-Christmas Maker’s Market, which will feature arts and crafts stalls, artisan products, coffee and food carts, have-a-go art activities in the arts centre, buskers and music. This will be a fantastic community event.

The gallery is open 7 days a week Monday to Thursday 9am to 4pm, Fridays 9am to

Cheffing as a career

People often say to me, ‘You are so lucky to be doing your passion as a job’.

It has been a great trade and I wouldn’t change what I do for a living. Every day is different, I get to be creative and ultimately be part of making people happy by creating lasting memories with their family and friends. Let’s face it, food is pretty important to us all.

The industry is finding it harder and harder to entice the younger generation into cooking as a career. I feel that having so many cooking shows in the media has made cooking seem glamorous, and it can be a big shock when they start in the industry and realise it is far from glamorous! When I started to cook professionally at 16 in the 80s, the only role models on TV in New Zealand for me were Hudson and Halls. I remember at the age of 11 deciding that cooking was what I wanted to do for a job after seeing Willie McNab (a mousse puppet) cooking a spaghetti dish with Chic Littlewood and then cooking it every week for my family.

It’s a very hard job at the beginning, with long hours, excessive heat and pressure, no social life (except after midnight), bad cuts and burns, smelling like fish or a deep fryer. My longest shift without a break was 32 hours (31/12/1999) and on a salary, so I think I earned less than $200 that shift. Thank goodness it wouldn’t happen nowadays. It's a lot different cooking today than in the 80s and 90. There is now better pay, conditions and less hours.

answer the question, would I recommend cooking as a

to someone starting just out?, ABSOLUTELY!!! It is so rewarding and the skills you learn in this trade are transferable to anything else they may wish to do. The comradery with your fellow workmates is amazing as you work so close to each other. There is nothing like the feeling of being in the ‘crap’

service and surviving the shift. It can be so exhilarating. If

can get through the first two years of their career in cooking then it will all head upwards from there.

Clever connections

Kiri Bevan answered her phone late one afternoon

had no idea the call would eventually lead to her family building a new home.

Kiri’s parents Marty and Glenys had taken her nephews on a short hike and Glenys had slipped and hurt her leg. With a storm coming in and no signal on their phones, Marty sent Kiri’s nephews off to call for help. In the end a helicopter was sent to airlift Glenys out.

Glenys had shattered several bones in her ankle. As Marty was still working, she stayed with Kiri’s family while she recuperated. For Kiri and her husband Andy, this was a glimpse into the future and they considered renovating their home to make room for her parents on a more permanent basis. Then a friend offered them a section to buy in Millwater with the idea they could build a new home to suit them all.

They didn’t want a traditional granny flat. They wanted a home that provided connection and privacy for everyone, that made good use of space and that could be resold as an integrated home. They shopped around a few different building companies, but it was Maddren who came up with a clever plan for making what they wanted work.

A few years and lots of decisions later, The Bevans now have a spacious, multigenerational home that works for the entire family with a flexible layout making it future-proof. The living pavilion, with kitchen, dining and living spaces is a great, central place for everyone to share and congregate with views of the pool. Upstairs is a private sanctuary for the nuclear family and the grandparents live downstairs, at the rear of the home.

The grandparents’ quarters are accessed via the hall or a door that cleverly connects the two kitchens. They are quite independent, with a bedroom, bathroom, lounge, kitchen and plenty of storage. Their ensuite is accessible from the lounge, which is handy for guests. They also have a separate entrance, plenty of gardens and their own deck that connects with the main outdoor area.

All three generations have been thrilled with not only the flexibility and functional flow, but also the quality of the build and the great balance between luxury and practical living.

Maddren are passionate about providing their clients with a true design and build service, and creating this unique home to

fit the extended Bevan family like a glove is what Maddren does best. Please see page 11 for contact details.

The first ever lawn mower, built in the 1830s, was made of cast iron and was so heavy you needed two people to operate it: a pusher and a puller. Since then all sorts of mowers have been developed, from animal-drawn mowers and steam mowers to the push mowers and ride ons we see today. But let’s face it, for free-time-loving people everywhere – and that’s practically everyone – the most exciting development in mower technology EVER has to be the robot mower.

Surprisingly, robot mowers have been around for a good 30 years now, although they only became more widely available in the mid-2000s. The technology robot mowers use now is pretty impressive, and over the coming years it’s only going to get better.

Most residential models operate from a docking station via wifi, with guide wires placed along property boundaries (preferably underground) defining the mowing area. Driveways are a breeze for these clever little bots, with the guide wire technology allowing them to cross up to three metres without cutting and then resume mowing on the other side.

The units travel in a continuous zig-zag pattern that allows them to expertly handle your curves, and setting options for how far

they go past your guide wire makes them incredibly accurate at cutting edges. They only need a space of around a metre wide to operate and they can handle slopes up to about 23°.

With recent advances in technology, Husqvarna have now brought out a higher-end model that operates via a smart phone app recording every move your robot mower makes. This all-wheel, articulated model can also turn around faster and handle much higher degree slopes, making this great for around the house or on a lifestyle block.

The next big step for robot mowers is moving away from guide wires to operating via GPS. This technology is already in production for larger commercial models, but it will be a while yet before you can buy a model like this for use in your back yard.

It’s true the outlay for a robot mower may be a bit of an investment, but once you’ve purchased the unit and had the guide wires put in, ongoing costs are a fraction of what it takes to run a standard lawn mower; you’re not buying petrol, new blades are only around $30 every six months and YOU DON’T HAVE TO MOW YOUR LAWN ANYMORE.

Planning ahead for the holidays Family Corner

It’s November already and before you know it school will be over and that vast six-week stretch of summer holidays will be upon us. While it’s great to spend quality time with your kids over the holidays, for families where all parents are working it can be tough sorting childcare that allows you to stay on top of your job whilst keeping the kids adequately supervised and entertained. Six weeks of holidays minus leftover annual leave divided by everyone wanting the same days off just does not compute.

A good move towards stress-free childcare over the holidays is to start planning now, so that by the time your wee darlings sprint through the school gates for the last time in 2022 you already have your plan firmly in place.

Thanks to COVID-19 (something good had to come out of it) hybrid working arrangements are far more common than they used to be. If a hybrid setup is still operating at your workplace, try asking if you can increase your days at home over the summer, or if you’re back in the office full time, why not see if hybrid arrangements can be temporarily reintroduced? Once you know what days you can work from home, reach out to other parents and suggest minding each other’s kids while you’re at home with your own.

To maximise your productivity during work/childcare double duty, get a heap of activities ready to keep the kids busy. Giant colouring posters from Boopino.com are a great option for all ages, sprinklers on the trampoline, re-usable water balloons, chalk for drawing on the driveway – you get the idea. I also recommend a white noise app to help with concentration. I use the Sleeps Sounds app to gently blend my kids’ banter with the sound of waves lapping on a beach in Thailand.

As an alternative to working from home, you could also suggest a ‘bring the kids to work’ day. I’ve heard of a few corporates that set up a meeting room with bean bags, activities and movies in the afternoon so employees can bring their kids in to hang out for the day.

Once you’ve exhausted all these options, if you don’t have friends or family who can help out, there are always plenty of holiday programmes. On top of the usual school-based varieties, there are a number of local specialised holiday programmes that look like lots of fun, including Estuary Arts Centre (art classes), The Forest School (‘Into the wild’ outdoor fun), Flow Academy (parkour), Bricks4Kids (Lego), Party Kingdom (indoor playground and day trips) and Scratchpad (technology).

So get planning!

Beauty Aspects

The benefits of a regular pedicure

Most of us spend a lot of time on our feet. That is why a pedicure is the perfect foot care for you, soaking, massaging, cuticle care and removing dry and dead skin. This keeps your feet healthy, looking and feeling great and you can add in a coat of paint for the crowning touch.

Going to a professional pedicurist is a guaranteed relaxing hour spent taking care of your feet. There is something psychological about having a pedicure and most view it as a necessity.

Your feet can tell you a lot about what’s going on inside your body. Reflexology is a great add-on to balance out the functions of the body and ensure it functions at an optimal level.

Pedicures are also helpful to diabetics, who need regular massage and care for their feet to ensure the feet stay healthy, preventing circulatory problem that can lead to gangrene and amputations.

Things to look for when choosing your therapist include:

• qualifications

• up-to-date health and hygiene licence

• hygiene and cleanliness in the salon and instruments used

• having your own nail file and buffer

• quality products

• a pedicurist that pays extra care to each foot and nail

Caring for your feet at home

1. Lotion up: using a thick foot cream with Urea, fruit acids or Healthy Hoof foot cream will help maintain your feet after a professional pedicure.

2. Pare down: use a good foot file a couple of times a week after your bath and shower.

3. Get wet: invest in your own foot spa, especially if you spend a lot of time on your feet. Add in some bath salts – you’ll love it.

4. Roll around: rolling a tennis ball or a frozen bottle of water under the sole of the feet will knead out all stiff and soreness.

5. Slip in: good footwear that fits well and support the foot well

Book in for your pedicure or reflexology session this summer.

For over 70 years Orewa Surf Life Saving Club have been serving the community by saving lives, delivering first aid, responding to medical emergencies and civil defence, developing youth and providing a base for local events and connection. Now they need a little help from you.

A new hub The club are raising funds to replace their existing clubrooms with a 2000sqm Orewa Surf Life Saving Community Hub. The new building will meet the needs of our growing community by enabling the club to continue to ‘protect those enjoying our beautiful beach and offer a social, business and functional space for all’.

The hub will be a great asset to Orewa, but is also a necessary and urgent replacement for the existing clubrooms, which are dilapidated beyond repair and will be uninhabitable within the next couple of years.

It was current Club President John Chapman’s Dad who helped build the original club way back in 1960. ‘It’s falling apart now,’ says John, ‘and it’s become too small. The new hub will host weddings, small conferences and events for local organisations, give the club the facilities it needs to provide vital surf lifesaving services AND be place for locals to enjoy a meal beside the beach.’

Through their own money and funds from members, grants, sponsorships and donated professional services, the club have already spent around $1m. They are now close to being able to submit for building consent, but they can’t start actually building until they have all the funds they need for completion. That’s where you come in.

Buy a brick (or two) The club have been working with institutions, trusts, foundations and corporate sponsors to raise funds, but the recent Buy a Brick campaign is a special opportunity for local residents, businesses, organisations and community members to contribute. For a $5000 donation (about the cost of building one square metre) the contributor’s name will appear on an acknowledgement wall at the club, making them a permanent part of the legacy.

‘Everyone you talk to is in favour of the club being rebuilt. Now is their chance to get involved,’ says John. ‘If 1000 people give $5000 that’s most of it paid for. There are families chipping in together, in memoriam bequests and you can pay your donation over time. We’re very flexible. And a big thank you to everyone who has contributed so far’.

World

#LoveYourEyes

World Sight Day, on 13 October 2022, is an International Day of Awareness and serves as a reminder to all of us to love our eyes. It’s a great time to think about the importance of your eye health and how you can protect your eyes and keep them healthy both now, and long into the future.

Here are 7 things you can do to help protect your eyes.

1. Have your recommended two-yearly eye examination (or more often if there is any personal or family history of eye health problems).

2. Wear sunglasses with UV protection. Now that summer is just around the corner (so is Christmas, but we’ll panic about that another day), it’s the perfect time to come in and get your prescription sunglasses sorted. We have a STUNNING range of new-season sunglasses to suit every lifestyle and outfit.

3. Make sure you’re eating plenty of eye health super foods such as citrus fruits, seasonal vegetables, and nuts and grains (you can also check out our tips for Healthy Eating for Your Eyes on our social media pages).

4. Get the right amount of sleep for you (this differs from person to person, so find what works for you and get that pre-bedtime ritual into action).

5. Use the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. Give those peepers the break they deserve.

6. Make sure you’re practicing good eye hygiene. Wash your hands thoroughly before going anywhere near your eyes, and, if you’re a make-up wearer, clean brushes are the only way to go.

7. Hydration is key. If you’re prone to dry eyes, we can help with getting you the appropriate therapeutic drops if necessary. Otherwise, remember to blink regularly when you’re using your computer, reading, or playing video games.

We want accessible, available, affordable eye care for everyone everywhere.

The team at Orewa Optics are on hand to answer any eye care and eye wear questions you have, as well as provide knowledgeable advice around the best type of contact lenses or optical lenses that will best suit your lifestyle. Not to mention we have a stunning range of new season frames in store, perfect for complementing your spring wardrobe. We can’t wait to see you! Visit us at 10 Bakehouse Lane, Orewa | Orewa Optics

Students – all abroad

Now the doors have opened again with the last two years of COVID-19 behind us, STS is back in business sending Kiwi high school students overseas on exchange programmes.

We offer programmes to a range of countries, including North America (USA and Canada), Europe (Germany, France, Spain, Italy, The Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland) and the UK (England and Ireland), Asia (Japan and China) and South America (Argentina and Costa Rica).

Students can go for a short period, such as two to three months over our summer period, and experience another country without interfering with domestic studies.

Alternatively, they can fully immerse themselves into a new culture and language on a half or full year programme.

According to Chloe Lane, content editor for TopUniversites. com and TopMBA.com from the US, student exchanges have positive benefits for our young people, including: experiencing a different way of life, expanded employment opportunities, experiencing different styles of teaching, making friends from around the world and having access to travel to nearby countries, particularly if on a continent such Europe, with the opportunity to learn or finesse a new language.

Student Exchange programmes can also enrich a young person’s life by giving them the opportunity to develop a more global perspective, gain the maturity to start thinking for themselves and formulating new ideas, all the while living in a nurturing and safe environment with a fully vetted offshore host family. An international exchange programme is seen by many parents as an investment in their child’s life and future direction.

Perhaps you are interested in hosting a student exchange? We also offer inbound students from other countries the opportunity to live with Kiwi families. Get in touch if you think this might be something you would like to do.

STS is interested in hearing from any students or parents wanting to know more about student exchange programmes for the 2023/24 period. Please contact the NZ Country Manager directly on 021 08489150 for more information.

Great day for a great cause

The Botanic Silverdale proudly supported a charity golf day at Wainui Golf Course recently as a fundraiser for The Catwalk Spinal Cord Injury Trust.

The event attracted 85 golfers including two high profile Catwalk patrons – former All Black Richie McCaw and former Black Cap Dion Nash.

‘It was a great day but it’s also a cause that is close to my heart. It’s really important to keep supporting the scientists who are researching a cure for spinal cord injury,’ said Richie.

Brad Smeele was also at Wainui to support the golfers and remind them of the importance of finding a cure for paraplegia. Brad, a former World Champion wakeboarder, was 27 years old and living in Florida in 2014 when a wakeboarding trick went horribly wrong. He is now a tetraplegic and uses his mouth and a straw to mobilise his wheelchair.

Brad has recently written his memoir Owning It, where he documented his life in 500,000 words using a stylus in his mouth to write. ‘The whole process was part of the healing,’ says Brad.

The Botanic’s sales team, Jan Fisher and Michelle Pipping, were at the Wainui Golf Course to support the players and take part in a live auction afterwards. ‘I’m not great at golf but I’m pretty good at auctions,’ joked Michelle, who is a local, Millwater resident.

Jan managed to scoop a prize in a raffle, but says the best part of the day was getting a kiss from Richie McCaw.

‘I went up to get my prize from Richie and started to walk away, but then I thought ‘damn it, I want a kiss’ and so ran back to get one. It’s not every day you get to kiss a Rugby World Cup winner!’ Jan joked.

David Pretorius, chairman of the Catwalk Trust said the golf day was a huge success and raised more than $68k for the charity.

‘Thank you so much to The Botanic for their sponsorship. It was truly a great day’ he said.

The Fshing Spot

By now the water temperature is climbing, the work ups are into full swing and the fish are hard on the chew. November is the best month to get some fishing in before the water gets too warm and the bite slows down in December.

seasonal winds can make trips out into the middle of the Gulf a bit

days where the wind and tide line up. We have a lot of northerly and north-easterly flows this season so you will need to focus on fishing the incoming tides. This may mean you have to get up super early to catch the tide (and the change of light) or wait until the low tide has passed and fish the start of the incoming tide. Often the fish go off the bite as the tide changes but then again, I have caught some massive fish with baits floating around in the slack tide too.

As the old going says… ‘You’re not fishing unless your line is in the water’. This is certainly my mentality when I go fishing. Research the weather, make a plan, stick to it and have your line

in the water for the maximum possible time. Don’t stuff around with your line out of the water changing lures, tying knots or having a snack. Be prepared, have your rig ready, arrive at your secret spot and start fishing!

The weather gods haven’t been kind to me this month and I have only managed one trip out. I headed out early to get the last of the incoming tide, but the water was already slack when I arrived. After two hours of fishing, one medium sized snapper in the bin, I headed out towards Little Barrier. There were some birds working but they were sporadic and moving around, so I set up a long drift in their general area.

Straight away the fish were chasing the 100g slider and it wasn’t long before I had my limit including a 10 pounder while on a video call with my wife! I’m looking forward to my next trip out a little wider next time – tight lines!

Estate planning for a blended family

It is not uncommon nowadays for you, or your partner, to have a child or children from a previous relationship. Blended families need to think carefully about their estate planning to ensure their children are properly considered.

Normally, people will direct in their will that everything goes to their partner. An issue with this structure for a blended family is that your partner may change their will after you are gone. People often expect their partner will leave the assets to be split equally amongst all children, however, circumstances can change (your partner may remarry or enter into a new relationship and/or have more children) causing them to update their will. Accordingly, your children might receive a lesser amount than you intended (or possibly nothing at all).

You may wish to consider structuring your will to ensure your children's interests are protected. You could leave a set amount of money to your children upon your death and then leave the rest to your partner. Alternatively, you could leave a ‘life interest’ to your partner that allows them to use the family home for the rest of their lifetime and upon their death it goes to your children.

Putting your assets into a trust is another option, but particular attention is needed on how the trust is structured.

With any approach, caution is required. If you are married or in a de facto relationship, your partner may be able to make a claim against your estate on the basis that relationship property is (normally) split 50/50. If this is a concern, a contracting out agreement, where you and your partner record how you agree to manage your affairs, may be appropriate.

The potential for claims by your partner, children or stepchildren under the Family Protection Act 1955 also need to be considered – but that’s another article in itself!

We’re here to help

Estate planning for a blended family can be complicated and requires careful consideration to ensure your wishes are met. The solutions are often as unique as your family, and there is no one universal approach.

If you would like to discuss your family's circumstances and which approach may work best for you, call us on 09 421 0559 or email silverdale@simpsonwestern.co.nz.

Sing the World Hibiscus Coast Singers’ concert

Like Christmas, The Hibiscus Coast Singers’ latest concert has been a long time coming. Initially planned for July this year, the choir is excited to now be performing their latest concert ‘Sing the World’ on 12 and 13 November, transporting the choir and audience around the world, led by the choir’s music director (and tour guide), Robyn Allen Goudge.

It’s an end-of-year concert, so Robyn has included several international Christmas Carols – some familiar and some not sung often.

The choir has been learning to sing in Te Reo, Swahili, Japanese and even Australian for this concert. HBC Singers continue to discover new music. The choir will sing Baba Yetu, most recently performed by Sol3Mio and the Graduate Choir NZ at Sol3Mio’s Auckland concert in October. The concert will also include classics such as ‘O Danny Boy’ and a new waiata by Michael Bell, Karakia Whakamutunga.

Michael Bell returns to accompany the choir while Prue Bell (Michael’s Mum) sings in the choir. Prue is also the choir’s rehearsal pianist. Michael may play an impromptu selection of Christmas Carols with some audience encouragement.

The choir will also be joined by soloists including Aiden Allen, Gi Lee, violin, drummer Morgan Allen and soloists from the choir.

The concert will delight your senses and leave you feeling renewed.

If you are keen to sing in the choir next year, please contact the choir at the same email to receive more information.

Central’s Tips

November 2022

The fruit and vegetable garden

• Sow sweetcorn and popcorn. Plant out melons and pumpkins in well composted soil

• Plant basil beneath tomato plants – it’s a gardening marriage made in heaven. Putting in a few marigolds alongside helps keep pests at bay too

• Keep a regime of liquid feeding and watering going during this growth period. Placing pea straw around plants in the vegetable garden helps limit moisture evaporation

• Stake, tie up or train climbing plants along wires. Tomatoes, cucumbers, beans and zucchini can be grown vertically aiding production in limited spaces

• Fruit developing – hang codling moth traps in pip fruit trees. For feijoa and citrus trees, there are also natural pheromone traps to beat guava moth

• Kumara tubers are available now – to grow in clay soil, add a handful of gypsum with lots of compost and sheep pellets

• Sow sunflower seeds – the ‘happy face’ flowers brighten the vegetable patch, and bring the bees

The ornamental garden

• Hanging baskets are easy: place a plastic saucer in the base of the basket to help hold water, fill with good potting mix and plant lots of summer flowering plants. Liquid feed after planting and hang in a sunny spot, watering and feeding regularly

• Plant hostas, astilbes and pulmonarias in shady areas of the garden, but remember to lay some snail bait around them

• After flowering keep an eye on the foliage of kowhai trees – this is the time when the voracious kowhai caterpillar starts munching. Spraying with an organic pesticide helps

• Best plants for pots that won’t get much water over summer? Geraniums, pelargoniums and succulents

• Mulch the garden: water rates keep rising and water restrictions have become a norm in Auckland, so layer mulch over the garden to keep moisture in the soil

• Plant rhododendrons now. They flower in November, so there’s an opportunity to choose the right colour and growth habit for the space in the garden

Project for November

Drought-proofing the garden with mulch.

Central Landscapes has a wide range of great mulches (all from recycled products or by-products of timber processing) to lock in moisture at the roots of plants. Give it a boost: Apply blood and bone before spreading mulch to add some nitrogen for the plants.

Boarding bus 96

As I write this article I am spending time with family in Paris.

On a recent trip with a friend, walking or boarding buses was how we explored Paris.

One night, whilst finding our way home, a number 96 bus appeared. I recalled it passed our destination and we quickly boarded. But, it soon became evident we were heading in the opposite direction to where we intended!

Awareness #1: When you realise you are not getting to where you want to go in life there’s always a stop button to press and a door will open for you.

After exiting the bus, we successfully boarded another, travelling in the opposite direction. All we had to do was cross the road.

Awareness #2: To change where you are heading in life requires a decision to cross over to another way of thinking and a different direction of doing.

The second bus was the last one running that night and 10.30pm proved to be a popular time. We needed to

strategically create space to be able to board, joining the throng of tightly packed passengers.

Awareness #3: Many people leave decision-making until the 11th hour. The opportunity for choices becomes limited as the clock ticks – endeavour to be decisive in the light of day rather than in the limited vision of darkness.

Once we were safely on the correct bus my mind started to churn out thoughts of self-blame, inconveniencing my travel buddy by making the wrong call. In fact, she wasn’t bothered by the experience.

Awareness #4: Allow self-compassion and humour when a decision you make may momentarily impact others negatively. An ability to laugh at yourself is key – and to be ok when life doesn’t go ok.

Maybe there is no ‘wrong call’, but knowing we can change direction when we realise we are not heading where we want to go. A new route is always available to us and those travelling with us.

Journeying life is an adventure of a lifetime! We can choose to change our current circumstances. We decide where we want to go.

Book Reviews

The Unofficial Princess Bride Cookbook

To celebrate the iconic movie The Princess Bride turning 35, Cassandra Reeder has created 50 recipes that pay homage to the movie. She says some recipes are inspired by thoughtful analysis of the film, while others were inspired by silly puns or historical elements.

Recipes include Farm Boy Stew, inspired by the character Wesley that Buttercup calls her Farm Boy. There are traditional Spanish Fried Dumplings that are so spicy, she says, alert your taste buds to ‘prepare to die!’ inspired by the famous line in the movie.

Cassandra has created a fictional National Dish of Florin. She has a Swordmasters’ Fon-Duel (enjoy the pun!) inspired by the famous sword fight. And if you are after something sweet, you can’t go past the Twu Wuv Twuffles, as there are many monologues about True Love in the film.

This cookbook is utterly delightful, quirky and playful. The perfect food to pair with your next screening of this fabulous film!

Mila and the Bone Man

Descended from generations of healers, Mila also has the gift. As a child, she is surrounded by a happy family and she loves nothing better than spending time in the forest, at one with nature. Tommy is her next-door neighbour, a quirky kid with a passion for bones and fossils, and he sees the world differently from others.

But Mila’s idyllic life is changed forever when her younger sister, Anahera, dies in a tragic accident that Mila blames herself for. The death tears the family apart and it’s not long before Mila flees to the city, and there are far-reaching consequences for the family until Mila finally returns home. Will Tommy be the one who can help Mila piece back together her broken life?

Mila and the Bone Man is superb. The writing is lyrical, the characterisation of a family facing trouble is emotionally engaging, and the beauty of Aotearoa is hauntingly evocative. This is a story of hope, love and the importance of family.

Facial cupping

Facial cupping is the alternative beauty treatment revealing a renewed glow to your skin, sculpts, plumps and relaxes the facial muscles… yes, and more!

I am always looking for something that can provide simplistic healthy beauty.

personal journey with holding facial tension in my jaw led me down numerous paths searching for ways to help me alleviate the tension. This is how I came across facial cupping, which is not so different to body cupping but without the bruising, using a much lighter technique and pressure.

This practice is part of a natural beauty and self-care ritual that promotes the body’s natural ability to help heal and create new life. The philosophy is through movement, which creates flow. The benefit of facial cupping goes beyond this and include:

• facial rejuvenation

• boosting collagen

• reducing puffiness

• reducing pore size

• reducing wrinkles

According to TCM perspective, we manifest tension in our face. Our face is made up of muscles that we often ignore, and cupping helps to strengthen and stimulate them. Introducing facial cupping has certainly helped me. It has also improved the overall texture of my skin and I have seen an improvement in my hormonal cystic acne, when I do it regularly.

How does facial cupping this work?

Essentially, you gently squeeze the cup onto an oiled face. It draws blood towards the surface of the skin, encouraging new blood vessels. Very much a controlled mini trauma, this promotes oxygen to the area, which then helps create fibroblast production stimulating new fresh cells.

It creates that beautiful fresh face glow and leaves your skin feeling alive, encouraging lymphatic movement, which is what creates the radiance – no flow no glow.

Facial cupping: what’s not to love about this method?

Easy sauce béarnaise

Local Recipes

Ingredients

½ cup white wine vinegar

¼ cup dry white wine

20mls lemon juice

3 sprigs tarragon, leaves finely chopped (or 2 tsp dried tarragon)

1 small shallot, finely chopped (or 2 Tbsp onion)

1 tsp cracked black peppercorns

3 egg yolks

Sea salt

200-250mls salted butter

Method

Combine the vinegar, white wine, lemon juice, tarragon, shallots and cracked black peppercorns in a small saucepan. Bring to a simmer over medium-high heat and lower heat to maintain a gentle simmer. Cook until reduced to about 3-4 tablespoons of liquid (about 15 mins). Place in the fridge until required (will keep in fridge in airtight container for at least 3 weeks).

Combine 1 Tbsp of vinegar reduction (more if you like it stronger), egg yolks and a pinch of salt in the bottom of a tall, thin container or jug that barely fits the head of a slender blender (stick blender). If the container is too wide the egg yolks and butter won’t be able to blend. Melt the butter in a small saucepan over a medium heat until it boils (don’t let it catch on the bottom). Transfer butter to a pouring jug, removing the milk at the bottom of the saucepan as this will make the sauce too thin. Use while the butter is still hot as this helps cook the egg yolks.

Place the head of the blender into the bottom of the jug containing egg yolks and reduction and turn it on. With the blender constantly running, slowly pour hot butter into yolks. It should emulsify with the egg yolk and vinegar reduction. Continue pouring until all the butter is added. The sauce should be thick and creamy. If it is thin and split you have added the butter to fast. Season to taste with salt. Serve immediately, or keep in a warm place for up to 1 hour before serving. Béarnaise cannot be refrigerated and reheated. Serve with your favorite pan-fried or grilled meat. It’s eye fillet of beef all the way for me!!!

Flourless and refined sugar free Lemon Cake

Method

Preheat the oven to 175°C. Grease a 8x3 inch cake pan and line the bottom with a round of parchment paper.

Ingredients

2 lemons

¾ cup unsalted butter

1 cup stevia (¾ for the cake, ¼ for the syrup)

2 large eggs, plus one egg yolk

1 ¾ cups almond flour (almond meal)

2 tsp Baking Powder

1 cups plain yoghurt

For the yoghurt glaze:

cup plain yoghurt

2 Tbsp lemon juice

2 tsp Stevia

Grate the zest and squeeze the juice from the lemons; you should have 6 tablespoons of juice. Cream together the butter, ¾ cup stevia and the zest in a large bowl until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs, one at a time.

Whisk the almond meal and the baking powder together to eliminate any lumps. Stir into the butter mixture, followed by the yoghurt and 2 tablespoons of the lemon juice.

Pour the mixture in the pan and spread evenly. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, or until the centre springs back when pressed or a cake tester comes out dry.

Meanwhile, make a syrup by stirring the remaining ¼ cup stevia and 4 tablespoons lemon juice in a saucepan over low heat to dissolve the sugar. Let it cool. Pierce the cake all over with a skewer and drizzle the syrup on top. Let it cool for 30 minutes. Invert onto a rack or cake plate and remove the pan. Peel off the parchment paper and let it cool completely.

To make the yoghurt glaze, stir together all the ingredients. You can add more lemon juice to make it a thick pouring consistency. Pour the glaze on top of the cake. Decorate with sliced lemons and serve.

Supporting your local charities is a blessing for them And good for your business

By the time you read this, the Greek Extravaganza fundraiser held in October for Hibiscus Hospice, organised by the Rotary Club of Orewa-Millwater, will have been and gone. Since the inaugural event in 2017, this popular annual showcase of Greek cuisine, wines, beers, live musical and dancing entertainment has cumulatively raised $81,860 for our local hospice. After this year’s event, we anticipate that sum should hit at least $110,000.

To maximise funds raised for Hospice, we ensure the evening’s operating costs are fully covered by cash sponsorship. This means every dollar raised from ticket and beverage sales, auctions, raffles and associated donations goes directly to Hospice. All our sponsors are motivated by the wish to give back to our local community and their support is highly valued and appreciated.

Businesses that support local charities are a blessing for our community organisations. But this blessing is a twoway thing: quoting from Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice: ‘…it blesseth him that gives and him that takes.’ People recognise companies that support their community and see them as worthy of support in turn.

Despite the escalating costs of this year’s Greek Extravaganza, we still covered all costs through the following sponsors, who we wish to thank and celebrate. Please support these community-spirited businesses: Platinum Sponsor: JP & Associates, Chartered Accounts.

Gold Sponsors: New World Whangaparaoa, Niko’s Pizza (Orewa).

Silver Sponsors: Arizto Real Estate, Heathcote Legal, Hitsend, St Pierre’s Sushi, Simply Finance, Sharon Maxwell Real Estate, UProtectNZ Insurance Services, US Tax Pros.

Community Sponsors: Angel Property Managers, Auckland Garden Services, Gladwin Homes, Mexico (Silverdale), Mike Pero Real Estate (Millwater), Modtec, Securitech, Sunrise Electrical, Teamwork Scaffolding, Whangaparoa Dental Centre.

My heartfelt appreciation to all of you and the donors of many excellent auction and raffle prizes. Thank you. You are our heroes.

We at UProtectNZ Insurance Services are proud to be a driving force behind the Greek Extravaganza and to have been a sponsor of this annual event right from the outset in 2017.
