We’re heading into our last few weeks of 2022 and I’ve been wondering, when our future selves think back on this year, what will our lasting memories be? For some, 2022 will be the year we took our masks off, cancelled all the cancelling and let COVID-19 recede – at least somewhat –into the background. For others it may be the year the Black Ferns won the world cup (get in!) or for you, perhaps more personal memories will be the ones that persevere the most. However you remember 2022, I hope there’s something in there that makes you smile.
As we prepare our final issue for this year, the team at The Millwater Mag / The Orewa Mag would like to thank everyone who has contributed throughout the year: to our content providers, advertisers, printers and distributors, thank you so much for all your hard work – we couldn’t do it without you.
To you, our dear readers, your support means the world. Thank you for choosing us to enjoy your cuppa with, thank you for telling your mates about the cool fishing tips you read in our pages while waiting for your take away, and thank you for continuing to support all the local businesses and organisations we share with you every month.
We’ve jam packed this issue with books for you to read, recipes for you to try, places for you to shop and to holiday too, treatments for you to treat yourself (or someone else) to, local initiatives to get involved with, some sage advice for living well this summer and we’ve popped in a little festive cheer too.
Please, pop your feet up and enjoy.

2022, what a year! As the year comes to a close, we thought it appropriate to make a little recap on what we as a business and locals achieved.
This December commemorates 1 year of business for Ray White Orewa Since our opening in December of 2021, we have sold over 60 properties, totalling in over $86,000,000. We expanded our business and opened a new office in Silverdale and have plans to continue our expansion in 2023 and beyond (stay tuned).
Throughout this time we have had the privilege of sponsoring Aged Concern, and through them we were connected to Hibiscus Coast Grandparents Parenting Grandchildren and became a collection point for the charity for a second Christmas in a row. Dylan donated a car to the charity so they were able to continue providing much needed services to the families
Ray White is a sponsor for the Ronald McDonald House Charity and once a year the Ronald McDonald House holds its National Pyjama Day supporting families with children in hospital We got amongst it and wore our pyjamas to work and walked the streets of Orewa collecting donations. Did you see us? We also provided a prize to the best PJ dressed kindergarten on the day Red Beach Early Learning Centre took home the win.
We also had the pleasure of becoming a sponsor for the Orewa Bowls Club. A team was entered into their club day and surprisingly we didn't come last! We did have the help of an experienced bowler to give us a boost.
In August Ray White held their national 2022 Annual Awards. Dylan Turner, sales agent & co owner of Ray White Orewa, was awarded #12 Residential Salesperson, and #7 Supreme Growth nationally. With 192 offices in New Zealand, this is a massive achievement. A worthy mention, Dylan was also awarded with Chairman's Elite status for the second year in a row. Chairman’s Elite members form part of the top 3% of salespeople in the Ray White group, recognised for their high performance in transactional outcomes.
Glen, Cindy, Dylan and Sharon would like to thank everyone for supporting Ray White Orewa in it's first year and trusting in them and their sales team. Wishing everyone a happy and festive Christmas and New Years.

The gift of art Art Speak
For the months of December and January, Estuary Arts Centre will be brimming from wall to floor with art of all themes, shapes and sizes. The annual Cash and Carry Under $500 Sale will be on display throughout the centre and in the beautiful Studio One overlooking the estuary.
With over 300 original artworks from painting to prints, ceramics, jewellery and more, there is bound to be something that takes your interest. By giving a piece of art this Christmas you are not only supporting local talent and investing in our economy but also giving something truly unique. In the Foyer Gallery, view gorgeous watercolours by the Auckland Watercolour Group. Another way to gift friends and family is by giving a voucher for the arts centre. Vouchers are redeemable in the gift shop and for all the art classes we have on offer.
The arts centre and café will be open all the summer holidays daily from 9am to 4pm. It’s a great place to bring visitors and to stop in after a brisk walk around the Te Ara Tahuna walkway. The centre will close only for the following holidays; 25, 26 December 2022 and 01 January 2023.
Our Summer Boot Camp will run from 16 January until early February with a full programme of inspiring half day, full day to multiple day art classes in sculpting, painting, printmaking and more. We introduce new tutor Vicki Watson, who will run a four-day figurative clay sculpting course. Erinna Law will teach an eco-printing day whereby you take organic leaves and materials and dye paper in a boiling cauldron. Inna Simukova will showcase her resin and ink pouring and Marnel will teach you how to make your own skincare range.
For artists looking for a challenge, the annual Hibiscus and Bays Art Awards will be hosted by Estuary Arts Centre in February/March next year, so make sure you get your entries ready.
To find out more about these programmes visit the website www.estuaryarts.org or visit the centre located at 214b Hibiscus Coast Highway. So get on down and join YOUR arts centre.

Bucket List Travel
Swimming with the manta rays in Fiji
Swimming or snorkelling with manta rays is one of the most unforgettable underwater experiences you can have – a true bucket list experience.
While there are year-round sightings of manta rays in Fiji, the best time to swim with them are at certain reef feeding and fish cleaning stations from May to October each year.
One of the best places to swim with manta rays in Fiji is known as the Manta Ray Passage – a shallow channel between Drawaqa and Naviti islands in the Yasawa Islands. Between May and October, plankton is funnelled through this narrow channel attracting manta rays to gather and feed, usually on the high tide.
In terms of species, both black and chevron-morphed manta rays frequent the Fijian waters. Typically they’re about 3.5 metres wide though you often see them much larger, some with a wingspan of over 5 metres.
Manta rays are harmless as they have no teeth or barbs. They are filter feeders, gentle and curious by nature, so interactions are safe and intimate. Manta rays are a protected species in Fiji so you will need a guide to swim with them. This is generally arranged at the resort you are staying in. The resorts are also part of the Manta Protect Fiji group, which monitors populations and guiding guests on best practice when swimming with manta rays.
We suggest you allow a stay of a minimum of three days in the Yasawas to ensure you get the best opportunity to see the manta rays. While visiting the Yasawa Island region, don’t miss the opportunity to visit the famous Sawa-i-Lau Caves. These beautiful blue lagoon caves were formed from ancient limestone carved out by the waves.

Six wines for your summer table
As the weather warms and the holidays hover close by, it’s time to stock up your wine supplies with a selection that will see you through Christmas, New Year and the plethora of platter days and barbeques that are sure to follow.
Here are three popular summer wine varieties and three for those who are keen to try something a little bit different. All are equally worthy of a spot on your table this summer.
Popular summer selections Sauvignon Blanc: New Zealand has long been considered one of the best producers of sauvignon blanc in the world, so we are spoilt for choice when it comes to this tropical summer favourite. It pairs well with a wide variety of foods, so is great for BBQs when you’re serving a range of proteins. The relatively low price point makes top of the range versions affordable. A personal favourite, and reliable every vintage, is the Villa Maria Reserve Clifford Bay Sauvignon Blanc.
Pinot Gris: The lightness and crispness of pinot gris makes it an always popular choice for summer. The flavours also tend to be heightened when the wine is a little warmer, which makes it the perfect summer sipper, for when you feel like a grown-up beverage but want to take your time. Why not try The Squealing Pig pinot gris from Marlborough? The name alone is sure to spark a few interesting conversations.
Rosé: Rosé is the quintessential summer wine. It’s crisp, refreshing, and travels the spectrum from dry to sweet, meaning you can pair it with a wide variety of foods. Bottles of rosé look like summer on a table too, with that gorgeous pink hue
and often a pretty bottle and label. There are so many local producers to choose from. The Ned rosé is always popular, or try something you’ve never heard of just because you like the label.
Try something new Viognier: Viognier (vee-on-yay) is basically summer in a glass, but it hasn’t been around in New Zealand as long as some other varieties. It’s fuller bodied than a sav, more aromatic than a chardonnay and pairs well with exotic spices and salmon. It’s not a wine to go cheap on, so splash out a little and try a version by New Zealand producers such as Alpha Domus, Brookfields or Cable Bay.
Albarino: Originally from the Galicia region of Spain, albarino produces a dry wine but with a little sweetness and fruity flavours that pair well with antipasto and seafood – perfect for pulling out at your next summer soiree. New Zealand producers include Villa Maria and Leftfield.
Cabernet Franc: People often slightly chill pinot noir and drink it in the summer, the cooler temperature bringing out its fruity characteristics, but Cabernet Franc can also be served in summer after a little fridge time. It makes a great different option for warmer weather, especially if you love your reds and lament their usual shuffle to the rear of the wine cupboard for the summer months. I recommend you give Black Barn or Askerne a go.

Silverdale Volunteer Fire Brigade Supporting our safety
As mentioned in our last issue, the Silverdale Volunteer Fire Brigade celebrated its 70th anniversary in November. Over those seventy years the number of firefighters has grown, along with the range and number of emergencies they handle.
In 2017, all New Zealand’s fire brigades became ‘Fire and Emergency New Zealand’ (FENZ) and are now mandated to respond a wide range of emergencies including all fires, fire alarms, rescues, hazardous materials, medical emergencies, vehicle crashes, weather events and disasters, flooding and yes, cats in trees and ducklings in drains.
one with specialist rescue equipment: a water tanker, and a support unit attending over 1000 calls each year.
Most people who call 111 for medical assistance are surprised when Silverdale fire crew turn up first. This is because St John partners with FENZ, training some firefighters as medical first responders to support with serious medical emergencies. Silverdale is the only station in the country where both career and volunteer crew provide these skills.
Fire risk this summer
Due to climate change the risk of wildfire is increasing in New Zealand and we are expecting another hot, dry summer.
It is extremely important that before you light any kind of fire outdoors you check the local fire danger at: https://www.checkitsalright.nz/. You will also be able to quickly find out there whether you need a fire permit.
There are two key actions you can take to help defend your home and property from wildfire, because the wrong decision can not only endanger life and property, but also our environment and the wildlife that calls it home. These are:
A few simple checks and preventative measures can help keep everyone safe on the Coast this summer.

The Fishing Spot
Wow, summer is already here and it’s magic out there on the water at the moment. The water is already 20 degrees and the fish have moved into the shallows to spawn, but this doesn’t mean the fish won’t be biting. You will just need to keep an eye on the bite times and change tactics if they’re not biting when the sun is high in the sky.
This time of year can be quite challenging with more boaties who don’t go out as regularly hitting the water. Often they are not aware of others using the ramp facilities or they don’t follow the 5 knot rule when manoeuvring near other vessels. You will need to bring your vigilance and patience with you, especially at the ramps. The key to a successful fishing adventure is to avoid peak times and public holidays, and fish early in the morning or late into the evening to avoid the queues. Check your boat out before you leave home, make sure the bungs are in and you have started your engine on the driveway to make sure the batteries haven’t gone flat. No one wants to be waiting for you to do this while
you’re parked on the ramp. If someone is holding you up, maybe offer to help them to reduce their time on the ramp.
This month I’ve managed a couple of trips out, which has been great. The first trip was spur of the moment in Wellington when we shot down there for my father-in-law’s surprise 70th birthday. We flew in the night before and while we were having dinner he got the ‘F’ call. We had been invited to clear cray pots on his friend’s boat based out of Island Bay and we couldn’t resist shooting out on the morning of his birthday. The weather was perfect and we had 15 crays onboard before 9.30am. Unfortunately our wives wouldn’t let us go for a grouper fish afterwards, but hey, a feed of crayfish for lunch wasn’t a bad surprise. Neither was a day in Wellington with no wind! Tight lines.

Millwater parkrun
If you happen to be around the Metro Park vicinity around 8am on a Saturday morning, you can’t fail to notice around 200 people gathering and having an enormous amount of fun running, walking, volunteering and supporting one another. Have you ever wondered what they’re up to?
If you haven’t heard of Millwater parkrun, it’s time you did.
The parkrun (with a deliberate lower-case ‘p’) organisation runs worldwide with more than 2,000 locations in 23 countries across six continents. Started in 2004 by Paul Sinton-Hewitt as a time trial event in Bushy Park, London, the event has grown into the 5km phenomenon it is today, with around 8 million people registered worldwide.
Millwater parkrun is a scenic out-and-back 5km route that follows the path around the sports field, onto Te Ara Tahuna Estuary Cycleway and Walkway and back again. It started in September 2014 and, aside from some pauses during the COVID-19 Pandemic, it has taken place every Saturday morning since. The group gather near the toilet block at Metro Park (Millwater Parkway) at around 7:45am for the run briefing, before volunteers start their timers at 8am.
Worried about taking too long or coming last? Fear not! A designated tail walker stays at the back, and there is always a friendly bunch of walkers, gently strolling the estuary path, chatting and supporting each other. The appeal of parkrun is that it really is for everyone: runners and walkers; old and young; serious runners, casual joggers and gentle walkers; those with dogs, those with prams.
And if you really don’t feel like pounding the pavement, you could volunteer. Parkrun is run by a team of around 15 volunteers every week. Roles are easy, fun, and training is given on the day.
To run, walk or volunteer at parkrun, visit https://www.parkrun.co.nz/register/, print out your barcode, bring it along to every event and you’re good to go. Your barcode works at any parkrun in the world.
The Millwater parkrun event team, led by event directors Rhys Spyve and Claire Taylor, would love to welcome you. For further information, email millwater@parkrun.com or visit their website https://www.parkrun.co.nz/millwater/.

Mysticism on the Coast
A new store taking Silverdale by storm is Knight Inspired, our very own crystal, candle and ‘magic’ shop right here on the Coast. Decorated with beautiful books, candles and fairy-lights, Knight Inspired has recently transformed from an online store into a physical venue and is now open for business down in Silverdale Village.
Sisters Kimi and Steph Knight first began Knight Inspired as an online community back in 2018 and have built up an impressive social media following of 13k likeminded crystal lovers since then. During the COVID-19 lockdowns their online community flourished as many sought items for their home space that helped them feel connected and more at peace. It’s this online support they received that inspired them to open the new physical store.
With the products they stock, Steph and Kimi hope to inspire mindfulness, empowerment, healing and connection, and to offer new age comforts in an everchanging world. Amongst their collection, for example, you will find the crystal Angelite, a stone of peace and harmony that has been associated with the support for everyday stresses.
The store have a wide range of crystals traditionally aligned with a variety of situations and comforts, but whether you like crystals for the meanings connected to them or just for their gorgeous colours and natural patterns, you are sure to find something you love within the shelves at Knight Inspired.
As well as crystals and candles you will find books and cards, incense, jewellery, new age inspired homewares and décor, and lots of other beautiful and inspirational goodies perfect for gift-giving.
In the future Kimi and Steph would like to hold events and get-togethers for those who love crystals and have new age interests who would enjoy being in the company of like-minded people. If you’d like to join the community, check out their website or Instagram page. Or, if you’d like to learn more, pop down to the shop for a chat.
Their delightful store awaits your arrival at 2 Palm Court, Silverdale.

Omega-3 fats
Omega-3 fatty acids are a group of essential polyunsaturated fats that our bodies cannot make themselves, so we must consume in our food.
They are vital for health, especially brain development, heart health and they are anti-inflammatory. Every one of the approximately 30 trillion cells in the adult human body is surrounded by a membrane that is made up mostly of fats. Omega-3 fats are an integral part of these membranes and play an important role in how they function. Unfortunately, most Western diets are low in omega 3.
Three of the most important omega 3s are EPA, DHA and ALA. EPA reduces inflammation, DHA, is helpful in the structural component of cell membranes, especially important in the nerves cells in the eyes and brain. Approximately 40% of the polyunsaturated fats in the brain are DHA fats. These are crucial for nervous system development of the unborn baby. ALA, not useful to the body on its own, must be converted into DHA and EPA, however, this process is inefficient as only between 5 to 0.5% of ALA gets converted into EPA and DHA.
Good sources of these include:
• for EPA, fatty fish (especially cold water fish such as salmon, sardines, herring, tuna and mackerel), seafood, fish oils
• for DHA, fatty fish, seafood, fish oils and algae.
• for ALA – chia seeds, walnuts, flaxseed
Current recommendations are to eat fatty fish twice a week or consider a good quality supplement (up to 2000mg in supplement form is safe according to the FDA).
Vegan and vegetarians can supplement with an algae-based DHA supplement.
However, if you are on blood thinning medication or have a bleeding disorder, you would need to check with your doctor first before consuming high doses, as omega 3s have a blood thinning effect.

Sense
Why are they important?
I have been cooking professionally for 38 years, both in New Zealand and internationally. I have my own business, Culinary Lane Catering, providing three and five course dinners in my clients’ homes, outcatering and grazing tables.
Now you can gain the benefit of my experience by emailing me your cooking questions and I will do my best to answer them in an upcoming issue.
Elaine of Millwater: My daughter doesn’t like the texture of meat. What cut of meat and what cooking method do you recommend to get a melt-in-yourmouth result that is not ‘chewy’ as she likes to put it.
Thanks for the question. There are two parts to this, one expensive and the other more cost effective. If you use a ‘first class’ cut of meat (more expensive), such as eye fillet, sirloin or lamb loin, these cuts will always be more tender and still have a meaty texture and flavour. Always sauté (panfry) or grill and don’t overcook, as this makes them tougher. Allow to rest for at least 10 minutes as this allows the meat to relax and be more tender. The other option is to use ‘second class’ cuts (cheaper), such as lamb shanks, brisket, pork belly or chuck steak. These are very tough and require hours of braising or stewing, but this will break down the collagen and connective tissue into gelatine, making the meat extremely tender and moist. For me it comes down to cost and time, to make the best choice for you and your daughter.
Kathy of Orewa: I get oat flour from Bin Inn in Silverdale as wheat and me do not agree. How much baking powder should I add to 500g of oat flour in order to turn it into self raising flour? Goofy me, I forgot to add it to my first ever go at making a pizza base. The dough turned out awful. My filling, however, was eatable.
Thanks for your question Kathy. Oat flour absorbs significantly more liquid than regular flour which makes it harder to rise than other flours. When making recipes that require baking powder in oat flour, add 2 ½ teaspoons of baking powder per cup of oat flour. I still believe that using Dried Quick Active Yeast will give a better result for pizza dough.

Making the right lifejacket choice
Foam jackets should also be inspected to ensure they’re in good condition, including straps and clips. Different styles are designed for different activities and provide varying levels of buoyancy. For general boating use jackets with buoyant collars to help keep the wearer’s head above water (especially important for children). Buoyancy vests are not as bulky and designed for water sports such as water skiing, tubing or jet skiing.
Any old, bulky kapok-style orange lifejackets are unsafe and shouldn't be used. With age they can absorb water and do more harm than good. Cut these up and get rid of them.
our volunteers wear their inflatable PFDs while onboard our rescue vessels. They are so comfortable you’ll often see us walking around Gulf Harbour Marina or Stanmore Bay wearing them. If you do, come up and say hello. The crew are always happy to show people around the boats, unless we have a tasking to attend to.
For more information refer to the Coastguard New Zealand website, here you can also find information on how to hire a lifejacket if you have boating visitors this summer.
www.boatiesbestmate.nz/ articles/posts/2018/september/ rent-a-lifejacket/
With summer approaching, now is a good time to evaluate your lifejackets. All recreational vessels must carry enough lifejackets for each person. They must be readily accessible, appropriately sized for each person on board and in good operative condition.
In most areas of New Zealand, everyone on board a vessel under six metres is legally required to wear a lifejacket, unless the skipper has assessed it is unnecessary due to low risk at the time. As Skipper, please keep in mind that if something happens and your crew are not wearing lifejackets, this reflects on you. Lifejackets must be worn in times of heightened risk such as in bad weather, when crossing a bar or in an emergency.
There are two main types of lifejackets for recreational boaties: foam jackets and inflatable jackets. Choose the type appropriate for who will be wearing it and the type of boating you're doing.
Inflatable lifejackets are comfortable to wear and provide plenty of buoyancy when activated, however, there are a couple of things to bear in mind.
Firstly, they come in automatic and manual activation models, so please consider how the wearer might react to being unexpectedly in the water. Will they remember how to pull the toggle on a manual jacket? Also, this style inflates mostly around the head/neck, so can be difficult to swim in. A foam jacket might be better for younger wearers, novice boaties or those not comfortable in the water.
Secondly, inflatable jackets require an annual inspection to make sure the bladder hasn't been punctured and that the gas canister hasn't come loose, gone rusty or been accidentally activated. If in doubt, get it professionally serviced.
Coastguard recommends Hutchwilco lifejackets. They've been a huge supporter of Coastguard for many years and all
The ‘Millwater Adopt a Family for Christmas’ initiative is back for 2022, giving our local community the opportunity to donate gifts and food to allocated families in need, and help transform their Christmas into a special one. This year, there will be drop off points for five different categories and then the items will be delivered together in mid-December to the Salvation Army Hibiscus Coast, who will present them to our ‘adopted’ families.
Gifts must be new and not gift wrapped, and no alcohol please. We encourage you to please consider purchasing gifts for teenagers and especially adults, as the younger children are usually well catered for. Please text
For general enquiries, please contact Kanchan on 021 0274 7802.
Thank you to the residents of Millwater and our neighbouring suburbs for your generous Christmas spirit.
We appreciate not everyone will be in a position to donate. No contribution is too small, even if you would just like to supply a roll of wrapping paper or tape that would be fantastic.

for Christmas
It’s that time of year again when hearts are full of festive cheer, but so too are our rubbish bins. One responsible way to purchase Christmas presents is to shop second-hand, but as a parent of three, I can appreciate how challenging that can be when fulfilling a wish-list. Another tip is to shop local, and our Toyworld in Silverdale has some ethical options to keep your kids entertained this summer and a 20% off discount coupon to get you started!
Four years ago, I wrote an article about crocheted water balloons and these are now available under the brand ‘Eco Splat’. We’ve used these personally over those four years and they’re still going strong. My family agree they are more fun
than traditional water bombs as they don’t hurt on impact or bounce off your opponent ineffectively. They’re also easier to use as you fill them by simply dunking them in water and when you miss your target, there’s no waste as you can reuse them instantly.
Another newer option is the ‘Splash’ water balloons which are also available from our local Toyworld. My kids were very impressed with these as they really have that water explosion sensation. They are silicon and reseal magnetically so will be another great way to avoid scattering balloon bits throughout your garden during your next water fight.
For the fluffy toy lover there are brands such as Keel and Eco Nation who make their cuddly animals out of 100% recycled polyester from plastic waste. Look for products with minimal packaging and those made from long lasting materials. Hape is a toy manufacturer that focuses on causing minimal environmental impact and make their toys out of sustainable fabric, bamboo, rice and even their ‘plastic’ is made from

Skin barrier
What is our skin barrier and why do we need to be aware of when it responds or reacts?
Our skin barrier is what keeps everything in balance. It is our outermost layer of skin and its main job is to protect and nourish. A compromised barrier creates redness, dryness, itchiness and irritation, which often becomes sensitive.
Things that can impact our skin barriers health include:
• environmental factors – can break down collagen and elastin production and damage the skin barrier
• overusing products – not keeping to a simple routine that works for your skin type
• over exfoliating – can cause dryness and irritation
• overusing active ingredients such as Vitamin A
What can we do to ensure optimum skin barrier health?
Hydration is the most crucial factor, making sure you are drinking your fair share of water and include ingredients
that are hydrating for the skin. If life is feeling a bit stressful, try to calm the mind and body – easier said than done I know! But look at ways to help alleviate any stresses that could create havoc with your skin.
Consider doing yoga, reading a book, watching your favourite tv show if this helps you wind down. From personal experience, I cannot express how much correct deep belly breathing can help with feeling better and for your overall health. Get a good night’s sleep too – beauty sleep is not just a saying.
I would also recommend getting a good probiotic, that helps ensure the microbiome in your gut is functioning at its best.
Our skin tells us what is going on inside, so when something is showing up, take the time to understand what could be creating the issue.
Lastly, wear the sunscreen!

Since our son and daughter were born ten years ago we’ve managed to establish a decent array of family Christmas traditions, including homemade advent calendars, new PJ’s on Christmas Eve, driving around the Christmas lights (sun roof breaches do occasionally occur when stationary) and drinking spiders on Christmas afternoon. This year I’ve decided it’s time to add something a little more left field to our repertoire, so I did some research (you’re welcome) and here are seven festive family traditions I’ve never heard of that you may wish to consider adopting with your family this Christmas.
1. A bit of a pickle: Hide a pickle ornament (or other random object of your choice) on your Christmas tree and whoever finds it gets a gift or gets to open their presents first.
2. Prediction jar: On Christmas afternoon, when your bellies are full and a little chill out time is in order, get everyone to write down something they think might happen during the next year. Pop them all in a jar and pack it away with the Christmas decorations so next year you can pull out the jar and see which ones came true.
3. Down under dawn: down to the beach and watch the sun rise sipping hot chocolate with marshmallows before heading home to open your presents (a great chance for someone at home to set up surprises too).
4. Couldn’t be more wrapped: hard to get into (think paper lined with duct tape, nailed shut wooden boxes, complicated knots) and see how long it takes everyone to open them.
5. A-hunting we will go: person around your home and write out clues to their locations.
6. You and me on a tree: the Christmas tree for everyone attending Christmas at your house this year. This is an especially nice way of making new partners, new step-children and invited friends feel welcome.
7. A star to me: Instead of an angel or a star as a tree topper, hunt the charity shops for a Christmas object of questionable style and see how long it takes your guests to notice. Try to make it something even more ‘special’ next year.
We’ve already voted on which one our family will be starting this year. What about you?
Happy Chrimbo everyone.

Fired up for cooking alfresco
When the mercury starts rising it’s such a joy to get out of the kitchen and cook outside where the breeze can keep you cool and carry the aroma of your fabulous feast to those waiting impatiently to devour it. Here are our top tips for making the most of cooking alfresco this summer.
Be prepared
When you first uncover your bbq, do a quick check of the legs and wheels to make sure they’re in good condition. Check the LPG bottle is still fitted properly and for charcoal models, make sure your leftover wood chips and briquettes are still nice and dry.
Spray the grill with a cleaner, give it a good scrub and then fire up the bbq for 5-10 minutes before you start cooking, to burn off any residue.
If your current bbq is looking a bit past its best-by date, Christmas is a good time to get a new one, with plenty of stock and model varieties in store. Gatmans have a range of gas, charcoal and electric Weber models available.
Make sure you have all the accessories you need too. Top of our list is the iGrill meat thermometer, ideal for cooking pork, chicken or lamb to perfection.
Be adventurous
Barbeques can cook a much wider variety of foods than most people use them for. Try a bbq breakfast this summer with bacon and eggs, hash browns and even pancakes cooked on the hotplate.
Put the hood down to cook your food faster and create a smokier taste, which many people prefer. You can also cook pizzas and even bake deserts this way too.
If you really want to get adventurous, try an outdoor fire that can cook your food while providing warmth and
ambience as well. There are many styles including options that are stand-alone, built in with bricks, or kitset surrounds you can build yourself. One of our favourites is the Ecsea Outdoor Fire Table, a circular table with a cool outer edge to sit at and a fire pit in the middle for cooking, roasting marshmallows and keeping you warm once the sun goes down. We hope these tips help you and your family enjoy cooking outdoors this summer and we wish you all the most delicious of Christmases.

The residents of The Botanic Silverdale recently threw a party to celebrate the one year anniversary of the foundation residents moving in to the newest retirement village on the Hibiscus Coast.
‘This is our home, this is our community and we really love it here. And the anniversary was something we wanted to celebrate,’ said Fred Scott-Raynsford, the Chair of The Botanic’s Resident’s Committee.
In the last year, 42 new residents have moved into The Botanic, but the very first residents were Malcolm and Lois Macaskill, and John and Margaret Eason. Both couples were presented with a professional photograph to remind them of that day.
‘Naturally we had to have champagne and cake too,’ says Michelle Pipping, a sales executive at The Botanic, and a Millwater resident.
In the coming months, The Botanic will welcome more residents as the magnificent, resort-style apartments are completed. The complex should be completed by the middle of next year and only a handful of two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartments are still available.
Michelle says those who have already secured an apartment fell in love with the spacious, high-spec design and the generous balconies.
‘Apartments are popular because it allows our residents to travel. You can lock them up and head off in the motorhome or on a trip overseas, and you know that everything is taken care of and the garden still looks beautiful when you get home,’ says Michelle.
Jan Fisher, another sales executive at The Botanic, agrees. ‘It’s also good buying because the apartments start at $950k and to secure a home of this size and this quality for under a million in Auckland is such a fabulous opportunity,’ she says.
A fantastic range of amenities will bring resort-style living to life at The Botanic. Some of the highlights include a lightfilled clubhouse, bar, cafe and a wellness centre equipped
with a 20m swimming pool, jacuzzi, sauna and steam room. In time, a full continuum of care will be available to our residents, including care services delivered to our independent living apartments.
You can find out more at the show home at 44 Evergreen Drive, The Botanic Silverdale (open Mon-Sat 11am-3pm), visit thebotanic.co.nz or call 0508 268 264.

Cancelling your life insurance policy is not the only answer
In times of financial stress
The events of the last two years have laid the groundwork for a very challenging economic environment impacting individuals, families and businesses. This may include significant lifechanging events such as redundancy, serious illness or death in the family, or bankruptcy. But one factor that is increasingly causing financial stress is high inflation and escalating interest rates as loan terms expire.
In recent weeks I have heard of instances where mortgage repayments have increased by $400 to $700 per week, leading policy owners to request the cancellation of their life insurance policies. While this is a natural, emotional response to a dire situation, especially where the loss of one’s home is a real possibility, cancellation of one’s life insurance policy should only be considered as a very last resort.
Alternative options
While each mainstream life insurance provider will have slightly different alternatives, consider options such as a premium holiday or a policy suspension.
A premium holiday may permit you to stop paying all or part of your premiums while remaining fully covered for up to six months. Premium payments then recommence without requiring payment of the missed premiums.
Policy suspension enables you to stop paying total or partial premiums and suspend your cover for up to a maximum of 12 months. You are not covered during the policy suspension but when you resume paying, you are not required to lodge a new application or undergo a fresh medical assessment. This is a huge benefit. If any medical conditions arise that would compromise or preclude a new application, following a period of policy suspension you are assured of resuming your original cover.
Naturally, there are triggers that enable these options to be taken up and terms that apply. The most important thing to remember is that your insurance adviser is the first person you
should contact if you are under financial stress and considering cancelling your personal insurance policy.
We also recommend taking sound advice and assistance from an experienced mortgage adviser at the very earliest stage rather than going it alone.

The law relating to Unit
Titles and Body Corporates is
The Unit Titles (Strengthening Body Corporate Governance and Other Matters) Amendment Act 2022 (Amendment Act) was passed earlier this year. The Amendment Act introduces a number of changes to the Unit Titles Act 2010, which governs the rules around ownership of unit title properties such as apartments.
What are the key changes?
Outlined below are a few of the key changes likely to be of particular interest to owners and potential buyers.
Remote attendance at Body Corporate meetings confirmed: During COVID-19, members of body corporates could attend meetings by remote means such as skype or zoom. The Amendment Act confirms members will continue to have this right, despite the COVID-19 Epidemic Notice expiring. The body corporate is made up of all the unit owners in the development, so this amendment will be particularly helpful for investment owners who do not live locally. It comes into force from 9 December 2022.
New disclosure requirements for prospective buyers: The Amendment Act expands the level of information required in the pre-contract and pre-settlement disclosure statements that must be provided to a prospective purchaser of a unit title property. The consequences of failing to provide the necessary information at the prescribed time have also been clarified, and may give the buyer a right to delay settlement or even cancel the contract. The requirement to provide additional disclosure however has been removed – a small win for sellers.
Utilities: Greater flexibility has been included in relation to the allocation of utility interests used to calculate the share of levies paid by each unit. For example, single or multiple utility interests can be assigned to a particular unit, or some utility interests may be assigned to only some units (for example, where an amenity is only used by some units).
Most changes under the Amendment Act will come into force on 9 May 2023.

Get into the spirit of the festive season
Have you been wondering what organisations you might be able to volunteer with to provide free Christmas meals to people in need?
This will depend on the region you’re in. Churches or your local Salvation Army often provide a free Christmas dinner. Local community clubs, like the Lions, may also offer a free Christmas dinner.
Some organisations have schemes to provide food parcels or children's toys to people who are experiencing financial hardship – this is another option you could consider.
Contact your local city council or CAB for more information about who will be running Christmas schemes for people in need in your region this year.
CAB are passionate about people knowing their rights and responsibilities and what support services are available. You can contact CAB by visiting or phoning your local CAB in one of over 80 neighbourhoods around New Zealand or by calling free on 0800 FOR CAB (0800 367 222). You can also email or get advice online through live chat.
• CALL 0800 367 222 (9am to 5pm weekdays)
• MESSAGE anytime via https://www.cab.org.nz/find-a-cab/ contact-us/, or live chat when available

Central’s Tips December 2022
The fruit and vegetable garden
• Assisting eggplant flowers to pollinate –use a small paintbrush to transfer pollen between flowers. Eggplant flowers are pale mauve and droop downwards, so they’re often overlooked by the bees
• A regular squirt of water over the bean plants is said to increase bean production. Picking regularly also encourages a bumper crop
• It’s all in the staking – plants such as beans, tomatoes and cucumbers benefit from good climbing supports through the summer
• Find out if your potatoes are ready by gently excavating from the edge of the mound. Early cropping potatoes are generally ready from now onwards
• Young citrus tree leaves curling up? An infestation of aphids on the backs of leaves can dealt with by manually wiping them off, or by spraying with a fish-based oil spray such as Aquaticus ‘Glow’
• Leek plants are available in seedling punnets or bundles. Separate them carefully, then plant each one in a 10cm deep hole (use a pencil to create the hole). Don’t fill with soil, regularly watering will gradually fill it in
The ornamental garden
• Weeding is a great way to tidy the garden up for summer, giving space for plants to grow and for mulch to be spread
• Avoid clipping plants like hedges and topiaries from now on as freshly exposed foliage will burn in the summer sun
• Flowering agapanthus should not be left to go to seed. These plants colonise easily in Auckland at the expense of other more desirable options
• Summer prune the wisteria, rambling roses and jasmine to maintain control as they grow extensively in the heat
• Plant carpet thymes, prostrate muehlenbeckias and coprosmas as hardy groundcovers to keep the weeds at bay
• Heading away? Move pots and baskets into shadier areas to reduce their water consumption
• The scent of summer – climbing star jasmine, bushes of philadelphus and michelia – or add a favourite rose - these all offer wafts of perfume around the summer garden

The Feinwerk range of pavers are thinner and lighter to work with than most other concrete pavers. They also have a very high strength rating, making them our most popular paver for several years now. Lay a courtyard for Christmas and enjoy the outdoor experience.

The buy now, pay later cost to Kiwis Mortgage Matters
More than 220,000 Kiwis use at least one of the four buy now, pay later companies (BNPL) operating in New Zealand.
The NZ Government is looking to regulate the $1.7B industry, but it has proposed that BNPLs below $600 will not be assessed based on affordability. There are concerns some clients will have multiple facilities to get around the $600 threshold.
Lasting impact
With banks scrutinising spending habits more than ever before, the use of this payment option could have a very real impact on your future credit.
Some banks total up all BNPL repayments over a three month period and then add this back into your application as an expense. The more expenses you have the less you can borrow for your home loan.
You may need to clear these debts before a loan is approved.
Things to consider when using delayed payment on a purchase include:
• Forward planning: Use buy now, pay later services as a last resort. Budget for your big spends and if you must use these services, consider any other bills or repayments first.
• Don’t overcommit: Keep track of your payment commitments and make sure you make them. Try not to pay for these services on credit that may gain interest and more debt.
• Get help: If you find that you’ve put too much on your buy now, pay later account, contact the provider immediately to discuss any hardship you are experiencing.
The government expects the new regulations to be finalised in 2023.

Book Reviews
Warrior Queens and Quiet Revolutionaries
by Kate Mosse
Kate Mosse has written many well-received works of fiction, including the novel Labyrinth, which was made into a movie. Her latest book is non-fiction, a fascinating celebration of women in history. It reads like a detective story as Kate uncovers about 1,000 women whose names deserve to be better known in our history pages. It all starts with her researching the life of her great-grandmother Lily Watson, a famous and highly successful novelist in her time who has completely faded from the record. The other women she encountered along the way are in broad categories, warriors, writers, inventors, and the like, and it’s designed like a dictio nary of names to be dipped into.
There are so many amazing women to discover that I had never heard of before. This is a book for anyone interested in history. It’s partly a personal memoir about Kate Mosse researching her great-grandmother’s life. It’s about women’s struggles, but it’s also a loving celebration of women’s achievements.

A Runner’s Guide to Rakiura
by Jessica Howland Kany
Maudie is literally and figuratively on the run. She is running from her past in New York and in the present on Rakiura Stewart Island as she is on assignment to cover the local running trails. When Maudie hears of long-buried treasure, she doggedly tries to uncover the truth. There are clues buried in the Stewart Island News and on buoys washed up on the pages, and intriguing hints from the locals.
Maudie is no detective, though. Maudie has an alcohol problem and is impulsive and erratic, so it seems unlikely she will ever find the hidden treasure. Or will she? But along the way, she learns a lot about love and life in an adventure that goes from beautiful Rakiura to the battlefields of Monte Cassino, on to post-war Paris and even to the Twin Towers rebuild.
A Runner’s Guide to Rakiura is an adventure story, a love story and a treasure hunt, both a historical and a contemporary tale – and, always, running is a crucial part of the action.

The month of December heralds spiritual traditions celebrating hope and light. It is also a time when many people feel the loss of hope and light in their life.
Maybe it’s the deleted name on the gift list or an overwhelming ‘to do’ list. This time of year has a way of arousing emotions that are attached to significant calendar dates.
The first Christmas week I was alone, in a home wreathed with festive decorations, required making new choices. Christmas celebrations had always involved family connections and fabulous food. With accepting a marriage ending, and daughters now creating their own family connections overseas, I tangibly felt their absence… but feeling free from the stress of preparations was a fresh experience.
Maintaining family traditions, sourcing comparably priced gifts and contributions to the Christmas feast had previously felt like a measure of my success as a wife, mother and family member.
Creating new holiday traditions can ease the ache of facing Christmas with altered life circumstances.
Family relationships may still be strained… the budget for gifts and food may be less than previous years… travel costs may prevent family gatherings… the weather may spoil a planned BBQ picnic…
What can be guaranteed? That 25 December to 1 January happen every year! Approaching these dates with anticipation of delightful moments but also accepting there may be disappointing and despairing moments allows us to experience the essence of Christmas; joy, peace and love.

Macular degeneration
Macular degeneration is one of the most common causes of vision loss in New Zealand, affecting many people over the age of 50. It causes a progressive loss, blur or distortion of central vision and typically causes difficulty with reading, watching TV and recognising faces.
There are two main types of macular degeneration. The first is dry macular degeneration, which causes a gradual loss of central vision. There is no treatment for this type, but often a specific macular vitamin and mineral supplement is recommended.
The second type is wet macular degeneration, which causes a more sudden loss of central vision from leaky blood vessels growing under the retina. In this case there may be treatment required.
Macular degeneration is diagnosed by an optometrist during a complete eye examination where they will check your vision and eye health using specialised equipment.
Risk factors include being over the age of 50, smoking, and a family history of macular degeneration. While some risk factors cannot be changed, there are some things you can do to reduce your risk of developing macular degeneration.
These include:
• having regular eye examinations
• not smoking
• eating a healthy and balanced diet rich in green leafy vegetables, a variety of fruits, fish and nuts
• protecting your eyes from strong sunlight
If you do have macular degeneration, an eye examination with Helen Heyns at Orewa Optics is recommended. Helen specialises in low vision, which is reduced vision that cannot be improved by further changes to spectacles. She will assess your current visual function and recommend solutions to help with daily tasks and hobbies. These may include special spectacles, magnifiers and telescopes. She gives advice to help you make the most of your vision.
Our team at Orewa Optics are on hand to answer any eye care and eye wear questions you have, and provide knowledgeable advice around the best type of contact lenses or optical lenses that will best suit your lifestyle. Not to mention, there’s also a stunning range of new season frames in store, perfect for complementing your spring wardrobe.

Summer exfoliation
It is that time of year again when people crave those sun rays and want to show off their skin. Exfoliation is an important step in any skincare routine, to help you achieve that smooth, healthy summer glow.
Before getting into the mechanics and details of physical exfoliation, it is important to review the basics. The skin is the body’s largest organ and is a vital, complex system that is in a constant state of renewal. The most superficial layer of the skin is the epidermis, which is made up of five layers that are divided into two zones. The epidermis is comprised of sheets of either dead or dying skin cells and acts as a barrier from the world.
On its own, the skin sheds one surface layer of dead skin cells every 24 hours and renews itself through a process of cell division over three to four weeks. Any form of exfoliation, whether chemical or physical, is just helping to expedite this natural process of shedding and renewal.
The term comes from the Latin word exfoliare. This is a regular practice within the cosmetic industry, both for its outcome of promoting skin regeneration as well as providing a deep cleanse of the skin barrier.
Exfoliation is very beneficial for removing dry or dull skin, increasing blood circulation, and brightening and improving your skin's appearance.
As mentioned before, there are two types exfoliation: chemical and physical. Chemical exfoliation would use ingredients such as alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), or enzymes to provide exfoliation, but here we focus on physical exfoliation.
Physical exfoliation is any method that manually removes skin cells and other debris from the surface of your skin. This includes simple tools such as washcloths, loofahs, sponges and brushes.
How often you should exfoliate depends on how well your skin can handle it. Body exfoliation can be done two to three times a week. This will help prevent ingrown hairs from waxing and shaving. If you have sensitive/problematic skin, weekly is sufficient, preferably with an exfoliating enzyme. Dry/normal skin can be exfoliated twice weekly.
If you’re not sure which exfoliating method is best suited for your skin, book in for a complementary skin assessment today.

Ham with orange and honey glaze Christmas Recipes Method
Combine the vinegar, white wine, lemon juice, tarragon, shallots Place all ingredients except cloves, ham and mustard into a heavy-bottomed pot. Bring to the boil, reduce to medium simmer until slightly thickened (around 20minutes) and add mustard at the last moment.
Remove skin from the ham and cut away top fat if too excessive. With a sharp knife, cut lines into the fat, around 3cm apart, then cut in the opposite direction to create diamond shapes. Place cloves in each point of the diamonds.
Place ham on oven tray with sides, skin side up and pour glaze on top. Place into a preheated oven at 170°C. Every 5 minutes baste ham well with glaze that runs off. Bake until glaze is very thick (around 30-50 minutes, depending on oven). Remove from oven and allow to cool. The liquid that runs off can be used on the side as a sauce.
You can glaze your ham the night before and reheat it on the day, but it is better to do it fresh, in the morning it is required, as it fills the home with lovely Christmas smells.

Method
Pre heat oven to 100-110°C. Line a baking tray with parchment paper.
In a mixing bowl, beat the egg whites and cream of tartar until soft peaks form. If using an electric mixer, use a low to medium setting.
Ingredients
5 egg whites
½ tsp cream of tartar
¼ cup stevia
1 tsp vanilla
300 ml fresh cream
2 tsp stevia
½ tsp vanilla
Fresh fruits
Add the stevia one tablespoon at a time. Continue beating until it forms stiff peaks.
Spoon the mixture onto the baking tray lined with baking paper and form into your desired shape. Bake for 1 to 1½ hours. Then turn off the oven and leave the pavlova in the oven for another hour.
While waiting for the pavlova to cool down in the oven, whip the fresh cream with the stevia and vanilla. Slice the fresh fruits. Refrigerate.
After an hour, take out the pavlova from the oven. Spread the whipped cream on the pavlova and decorate with prepared fruit slices. Enjoy!
