The Tomatin distillery is one of the most northerly Speyside distilleries, lying just 16 miles South of Inverness. A somewhat chequered past has been dealt with and the distillery, owned by Japanese interests since 1986, has produced a whiskey that has won major awards at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition; Double Gold in 2016, Gold in 2017 and again in 2018.

Rated 91.5/100 by the Jim Murray Whisky Bible, the Tomatin 12 is aged in ex-bourbon barrels and finished in ex-Oloroso sherry casks for the last 6-9 months of maturation. The online offer I received recently for this whisky was just too good to miss.

Colour: Amber-gold

Nose: An inviting combination of fruit and spice, fresh green apples balanced by richer notes of cinnamon and nutmeg and just a hint of milk chocolate

Palate: Clean and fruity, honey with lemon and orange zest before the woody spice appears. Gentle sweetness and not overly complex

Finish: Medium length, with refreshing citrus notes well balanced by toasty oak

Conclusion: A gentle whisky and great value on special offer at $64.99, including courier, 700ml, ABV 43%, 12 y.o.
