Why is it important to wear proper shoes for running / walking / working out?

Whether your workout involves running, walking, sports or gym equipment, a decent sports shoe is a must.

Injury caused by inappropriate shoes can needlessly derail your fitness or weight loss regime. Investing in a quality shoe can help you prevent foot and ankle damage and make your workout a more pleasant and comfortable experience. If you take your exercise and health seriously, you should invest in quality. Price is a one-time event; if you buy cheap and the shoe is incorrect and bad quality, it is actually going to cost you money and sometimes cause pain! Even a simple thing like lacing your sports shoe up correctly can make a huge difference. Then there is fit… will you be correctly fitted? This is sometimes a time-consuming thing to do but it is rare that a shoe goes on and that is ‘the one’. You need to try various shoes on and walk around in them.

If you are looking for a good shoe and there is no one around to assist you, as is the case with the big box stores, how can you know you get the right fit. Most people don’t even know their size because all shoes are different – and all shoe companies are not standard fit, believe it or not. Hence the thousands of shoes being re-sold on Trade Me for instance, although they are brand new.

Yes, you can buy online and take the risk, you also take the risk that the shoe is actually counterfeit product i.e. it looks and feels like a good branded shoe but it is actually a very good copy with inferior materials used. If Customs pick it as counterfeit, they will ask you to prove its origin; if you can’t, they keep it and destroy the shoe.
