As a lover of wine, I select wines that over-deliver for what you’re paying; that’s the point of my job, otherwise I would be working in a grocery store where all that’s sold is by brand. Wines change year to year and the reason for that is Mother Nature. Some years she is kind to the grape grower and some years not so. The wine you thought was amazing one year may not be so the next and that’s where I come in; by trying and researching what’s in the market, I find what over-delivers. Some labels we’ll be reviewing you’ll recognise and some you won’t, but the key point to remember is that these all over-deliver! Sileni The Triangle Merlot 2013 from Hawkes Bay is choc-a-bloc full of 5-star reviews and gold medals. Just recently, it was awarded a gold medal and trophy for Best Merlot of the Show at the Spiegelau Wine Show, which is the 2nd biggest wine show in NZ – not bad at $23.99! From the phenomenal 2013 vintage, it has ripe and concentrated plum, dark berry and liquorice flavours, with hints of dark chocolate on the finish. Soft and velvety tannins provide the backbone for a rich wine that will cellar comfortably for a decade. This wine is a ‘must’ with roast lamb while the nights still have a little bit of chill.
