summer’s coming – PREPARE THAT RV!
As Winter passes and Christmas approaches, it’s time to start preparing your RV for the Summer. Here are some useful tips to help prepare your caravans and motor homes. Check the battery is charged, or reinstall the battery if removed for Winter. Then inspect your tow hitch and lubricate any pivot points. Check the handbrake operation and the axle brakes and ensure the outside lights work properly – before moving your RV. When you can access all sides, start by inspecting the suspension and springs for wear and tear. Check tyre condition, air pressure and also lug nut torque on each wheel. Fill up with fresh water and to do a system test. Siphon water through the pipes and hot water heater, removing any air and pressurizing the water system so it’s running out at all taps. Some owners sanitize their water systems with a bleach- or chlorine-based tablet, available from Burnsco Marine or RV parts suppliers. Check gas bottle levels before turning them on and use the mains power lead to test appliances inside your RV. Test the water heater once full of water – after 10 minutes there should be a noticeable rise in temperature. Turn on your fridge and check after 15 minutes that it is cooling correctly. Light your cooker to check all elements are working and test your gas furnace to ensure your onboard heating works – it gets cold in summer too! Install new batteries in the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Check the fire extinguisher, making sure the needle is in the green. Check your electrical WOF – some camping grounds will unplug you if this has expired. Check your lights, TV, air conditioning, solar charging systems and other extras fitted, ensuring that everything is tested and works as designed. Now there’s just food, clothing and fuel and you’re ready to hit the road once again.
