Sunglasses-SummerSense With summer nearly here, it’s the most important time of year to consider protecting our eyes from the sun and the ultraviolet radiation that is emitted in its rays. Most people are aware of the damage that UV can cause to our skin, but it can also have detrimental effects to the eyes and vision. Wearing a pair of sunglasses is like wearing sunscreen, so it’s best to have a high eye protection factor (EPF) that will block more than 99% of the UV light, even on an overcast day. A huge number of Kiwis have early UV-related changes to the front of their eyes. It’s best to prevent this kind of damage and to stop these changes from progressing. A quality pair of sunglasses will also shield the delicate skin around the eye, which can easily be burned in the harsh sun we have here in New Zealand. UV light can also contribute to the development of conditions inside the eye, including cataracts and age-related macular degeneration. Both of these conditions cause an increase in sensitivity to glare, which is an additional reason to shelter the eyes from the bright rays outside. Aside from the health benefits, sunglasses are extremely beneficial to vision on a bright summer’s day, because they can block the distracting reflections that bounce off most surfaces. Keen boaters, skiers or people who drive a lot should also consider polarised lenses, which are specifically aimed at decreasing the reflections off the ocean, snow or road surface. There are many different styles available; from high-fashion designs to wraparounds for the more active individual – and most sunglasses can be fitted with prescription lenses, to give you the best balance of clear vision, eye protection and fashion.
