Things are certainly buzzing at The Woodwork Room in Millwater. Artistic entrepreneur Peter Knell produces the most amazing 3D images by using the latest state-of-the-art CNC machinery. The sharpest cutting tools meet the sharpest mind and create the finely detailed artwork that you see here.

Peter grew up locally, attending Orewa Primary and Pinehurst High School before serving an electrical engineering apprenticeship and becoming an industrial electrician for the past 12 years. Peter told us, “The company I work for produces large CNC machinery and I built my own smaller-scale machine from scratch for my artwork, but now have an imported $20k CNC machine which is a joy to use.” Computer Numerical Control (CNC) brings together a program, a computer and a very precise, 3-axis cutting tool. With digital imagery, the finest details are cut into the MDF base. Paint is rolled onto the uncut surface, which gives a lightly-textured sheen finish, and provides the incised imagery a real 3-dimensional quality.

Peter added, “Quite a lot goes into choosing which images to produce, as it is important to strike the right balance between what the machine takes out and what it leaves, thereby creating the best contrast between the matte finish and the exposed cut wood.” We looked at some of the examples of what Peter has for sale via his website and were amazed at the fineness of detail that can be achieved by this cutting-edge technology (pun intended). “My major customers are private individuals and mainly female,” Peter Told us. “People like to buy my artwork for special occasions such as birthdays, anniversaries, etc. There really are no constraints on what can be produced, within the limitations of good digital design – but I am not currently taking commissions for bespoke pieces.”
