Pine Hills Seniors: Staying Active & Involved!!

ew to the Orlando area in 2007 Sheila & Compton Belle desired to connect with other seniors. They never imagined that their initial meetings at the Pine Hills Community Center would grow from five members to an award-winning 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization that now boasts over 100 members. What was initially known as "Pine Hills Seniors Coming Together" is now the Pine Hills Seniors Inc. whose mission is to "Empower our Seniors to Live Active, Healthy Lives." The cross-cultural group whose members would normally meet on Thursdays, has had to suspend in-person meetings due to the COVID-19 pandemic, continues to support and encourage its members through virtual exercise classes which are held daily and led by instructors supervised by Gloria Harris.
"In these uncertain times, many of our seniors who live alone are at risk for loneliness and isolation", states Mrs. Belle. To help minimize these feelings, she has encouraged members to begin journaling to document what they are grateful and thankful for despite the challenges they have faced over the last year. Mrs. Belle is hopeful for the day when the group can begin regular meetings and looks forward to reviewing the collection of notes and thoughts from the members in hopes of compiling it into a book. In fact, it was a similar effort that led to the creation of the group's first book simply entitled Go! which features a collection of short stories about its members.
