ello! I’m Glen and let me begin by saying it’s a pleasure to “meet you". If someone had told me a year ago that I would be operating a paper, I would have laughed. However, this journey in some respects serves as a form of vindication for me. Twenty years ago, I worked as a Corporate Communications Director for an oil and gas company where I had a manager who made my work environment unbearable. She would unfairly keep a stack of errors that I made, even if it was clear that I was only submitting a draft of a document for her to review. It got to the point where she even suggested that I enroll in remedial writing classes! And while coincidences are varying and random, in most cases I don’t believe in them. Instead, I believe that this was all pre-ordained and God has prepared me for a moment like this. Some may even call this luck. However one of my favorite quotes states that “Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity". This quote, attributed to Roman philosopher Seneca, reminds us that we can make our own luck.

outside will have you believe that we are in the middle of Summer. As we continue to recover from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, things are beginning to open up in our community and we are returning; dare I say to a sense of normalcy. Operation Best Foot Forward

A

ccidents are preventable, especially those involving drivers striking people walking across the street. Driver and pedestrian education is critical to saving lives and being safe on the streets. That's why the Best Foot Forward Pedestrian Safety Program launched in 2012, with high-visibility crosswalk enforcements like the ones set for next week. More than a campaign, it's a behavior change-based program designed to improve road safety through consistent and persistent education.

The Best Foot Forward Program focuses on one specific behavior change, to get more drivers to yield for pedestrians at marked crosswalks as Florida law requires. Drivers who fail to stop for pedestrians in marked crosswalks may be issued a warning or citation of a minimum of $164 and 3 points on their license.

The OrlandoKissimmee-Sanford metropolitan area is the most dangerous for pedestrians in the United States

"Each of the coalition partners is working hard toward a world where there are no pedestrian fatalities." BWCF manages the Best Foot Forward program in three counties alongside and on behalf of our partners.

A 2021 report entitled "Dangerous by Design 2021 named the OrlandoKissimmee-Sanford metropolitan area the most dangerous for pedestrians in the United States. In fact, the report lists 7 of the 10 most dangerous metropolitan traffic areas in the nation are in Florida. The report ranks the 100 most populous metro areas by their “Pedestrian Danger Index,” which accounts for differences in population and walking rates.

Orange County Asian Committee Seeking Artists for Asian American Heritage Month Art Contest The Orange County Asian Committee is calling for Central Florida artists to participate in the Asianthemed art contest. The selected artwork will be showcased during the virtual Asian American Heritage Celebration on May 21, 2021, at 7 p.m. The contest will consist of four age-group ranges: ages 5-9, ages 10-14, ages 15-17, and adults over 18. The City of Orlando and OUC unveil 100-station Orlando Public Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Network On Friday, April 1, 2021, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, Orlando City Commissioners, and OUC—The Reliable One unveiled a new 100-station Orlando Public EV Charging Network. Through this project, which is a partnership with OUC and the American Cities Climate Challenge, the City of Orlando has installed 100 new EV charging stations spanning 33 locations throughout the City, including at parks, neighborhood, and senior centers, parking garages, and public venues. Each location will also have at least one ADA-accessible EV charging station to ensure the services are accessible to all drivers. EVs are critical to

achieving OUC’s goal of netzero carbon emissions by 2050, with interim goals of reducing carbon emissions by 50% by 2030 and 75% by 2040. This project is the largest of its kind in Florida with 22 fast-charging stations – including 16 superchargers for Teslas.

Tidbits continued Pine Hills Residents Voice Concern Over Possible New Liquor Store A new development currently under construction on the corner of N. Powers Dr. and Clarcona-Ocoee Rd. rumored to feature a liquor store is raising eyebrows. At a recent Orange County Board of Commissioners, residents raised concerns about the development that would lead to additional traffic congestion, crime, and degradation of the community. Residents who live near the development, which is across the street from the Long Lake Hills residential community, believe that a liquor store is unnecessary in a community already saturated by liquor stores and that a new store will serve as a magnet for violence and negatively affect property values for surrounding homeowners. In 2018 the Pine Hills Neighborhood Improvement District Overlay Zone restricted certain types of businesses like liquor stores that could adversely affect the development of the N. Pine Hills - Silver Star corridor, however, the development underway is about four miles away from that area. While the construction of the liquor store is legal, District 2 County Commissioner Christine Moore states that a liquor store has not been approved and is working with the developer of the property to attract businesses that residents would support.

Pine Hills Seniors: Staying Active & Involved!!

N

ew to the Orlando area in 2007 Sheila & Compton Belle desired to connect with other seniors. They never imagined that their initial meetings at the Pine Hills Community Center would grow from five members to an award-winning 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization that now boasts over 100 members. What was initially known as "Pine Hills Seniors Coming Together" is now the Pine Hills Seniors Inc. whose mission is to "Empower our Seniors to Live Active, Healthy Lives."

The cross-cultural group whose members would normally meet on Thursdays, has had to suspend in-person meetings due to the COVID-19 pandemic, continues to support and encourage its members through virtual exercise classes which are held daily and led by instructors supervised by Gloria Harris.

"In these uncertain times, many of our seniors who live alone are at risk for loneliness and isolation", states Mrs. Belle. To help minimize these feelings, she has encouraged members to begin journaling to document what they are grateful and thankful for despite the challenges they have faced over the last year. Mrs. Belle is hopeful for the day when the group can begin regular meetings and looks forward to reviewing the collection of notes and thoughts from the members in hopes of compiling it into a book. In fact, it was a similar effort that led to the creation of the group's first book simply entitled Go! which features a collection of short stories about its members. COVID-19 CORNER COVID-19 VACCINE APPOINTMENTS All Florida residents ages 18 and up are now eligible for the COVID vaccine at ANY vaccination site. The Florida Department of Health in Orange County’s vaccination site is now able to handle 3,400 appointments per day. The medically vulnerable are also eligible for the vaccine however, a medical form that is signed by a physician is required. Incorporate low fat cheese, add a “skinny” white sauce, and a splash of beer to boost the flavor.

Homemade Queso Ingredients 2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil 1 cup onion, chopped, medium in size 2 cloves garlic, minced 1/2 cup pale ale, or other light-colored beer 1 1/2 cups low-fat milk, divided 3 tablespoons cornstarch 1 3/4 cups shredded sharp Cheddar 1 10-ounce can diced tomatoes with green chiles, (see Note), drained, or 1 1/4 cups drained petite-diced tomatoes ( I like Rotel) 2 tablespoons lime juice 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon chili powder Cayenne pepper, to taste (optional) 1/4 cup sliced scallions 3 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro Hot sauce ( to taste, optional)

Preparation 1. Heat oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add onion and garlic and cook, stirring, until soft and beginning to brown, 4 to 5 minutes. Add beer and cook until reduced slightly, about 1 minute.

Add 1 cup milk and bring to a simmer.

2. Meanwhile, whisk the remaining 1/2 cup milk and cornstarch in a small bowl. Add to the pan and cook, stirring vigorously, until bubbling and thickened, 1 to 2 minutes. Reduce heat to low, add cheese and cook, stirring, until melted. Stir in drained tomatoes, lime juice, salt, chili powder and cayenne (if using). Add hot sauce if desired. Serve warm, garnished with scallions and cilantro.

Haw thorne Park Coming Soon!

n Wednesday, March 31, 2021 Wendover Housing Partners, one of the Southeast’s premier multi-family housing developers, held a groundbreaking event for Hawthorne Park, a new senior affordable community in Pine Hills neighborhood. Located at 5386 Silver Star Rd. (the intersection of Pine Hills Rd. & Silver Star Rd.), the $27 million residential development will serve as a catalyst for additional neighborhood improvements and address Orlando’s need for more affordable housing.

The 120-unit development will replace a portion of an underutilized shopping center located behind the Hardee's restaurant and become the new anchor for revitalization in Pine Hills. Hawthorne Park is an example of successfully utilizing publicprivate partnerships to address the need for more affordable housing.

Hawthorne Park will cost an estimated $27.6 million to develop; financing includes a $250,000 grant from Orange

County, a $317,500 loan from Orange County, as well as $2.3 million in lowincome housing tax credits (LIHTC) from Florida Housing Finance Corporation.

Slocum Platts Architects is designing the complex and Roger B. Kennedy Inc. is the general contractor. Construction on the project is expected to take 11 months.

TOTALLY (LA)CROSSED OUT A STORY OF DEDICATION AND PERSEVERANCE AGAINST THE ODDS

I

t would be safe to say that when it comes to sports, most people would be familiar with the traditional offerings including, basketball, baseball, football, or soccer. However for many youth in traditional urban settings, lacrosse is not one of those sports that would jump out at them.

There are multiple reasons why this is the case but don't tell that to Koi Slaughter who is the head coach for the girl's lacrosse team at Evans High School. In 2015, Oak Ridge and Evans High added lacrosse programs as part of an Orange County school district effort (Jones High followed the following year) to provide the same sports at each of its high schools, and a national push to make lacrosse accessible to more athletes, especially minorities.

Slaughter, who had previously coached lacrosse through a City of Orlando

program. He jumped at the chance to be a part of the program. "I wanted to be a part of something different" states Slaughter, a 2006 graduate of Evans High school.

When asked about some of the challenges that exist, Slaughter states that increased exposure to the sport and keeping the girls motivated is a main goal of his. The competition can be tough when going against other schools that have more established programs with players who have been playing longer. Because of this, Slaughter is not so focused on winning and losing. Instead he wants his team to set goals of how they can improve. Another challenge Slaughter acknowledges that players in other neighborhoods with more long-standing teams have other avenues to play year-round outside of school which provides those players additional opportunities to improve their skills.

Something that his players are not privy to, due to a myriad of reasons including, financial limitations, transportation or continued lack of exposure in the sport.

Slaughter is hopeful that a new lacrosse program called the Sol Blazers, will provide an opportunity for more girls to continue to learn the fundamentals

and play outside of the school league at no cost to the participants (with the exception of a $30 US Lacrosse membership fee).

Across the country, over 800,000 children and adults play lacrosse, up more than three times from 2001, according to U.S. Lacrosse.

At the college level, lacrosse remains a mostly white sport.

In 2018, 86% of players were white and less than 3% of players were black, according to the NCAA. Hampton University in Virginia became the first historically black school to add a Division 1 lacrosse program.

When asked, what's next for his program, Slaughter states that we would love to see more community support. We need everything from volunteer assistance with water and snacks to printing T-shirts.

When asked that question about his prospects about coaching on the collegiate level, Slaughter states, "while it would take a lot to pull me away from this team, it is something that I would love the chance to do."

Q&A We recently caught up with Dr. Idler Bonhomme to learn more about his organization FYZICAL and his community work as President of Greater Haitian American Chamber of Commerce (GHACC)-Orlando and being a Founding Member of Haitian American Association of Brevard.

Q: For those who are not aware of FYZICAL, how would you describe the work you do at your company?

A: FYZICAL Therapy and Balance Centers works to improve our patient's quality of life by keeping them moving and achieving their peak performance. We look at the overall health, determine risk factors in terms of mobility. We also focus on individuals at risk for falling especially seniors 65+ because we know 1 in 3 seniors can have a fall that can lead to hospitalization.

Q: What, in your opinion, sets FYZICAL apart from other centers?

A: We believe in a hands-on, family-oriented approach where customers who come in want to be a part of a culture where they genuinely feel cared for and not just another number. Touch is very important to our patients therapeutically and they trust us to help them regain movement and to help alleviate pain. Additionally, being culturally diverse also sets us apart as we have team members who speak Spanish and Creole.

Q: Tell me a more about your educational background and how long you have been doing this work?

A: I earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of Florida in Gainesville, FL, and a Master of Physical Therapy from the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, GA in 2004. I then went on to NOVA Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale, where I earned my Doctorate of Physical Therapy.

Q: Why was it important to you to have your business located in or near Pine Hills?

A: When I moved to Orlando in 2013, and when I looked around, I discovered there was a gap

and that the Pine Hills community did not have a physical therapy center. I am also aware of the disparities that exist by the lack of having black medical professionals so I believe that my calling is to service the underserved. It's an uphill battle, but at the same time, it is very rewarding.

Q: Lastly, tell me more about your community involvement?

A: I am a proud member and current President and would like to mention the Greater Haitian American Chamber of Commerce for their ongoing commitment to providing service and connecting groups and individuals as well as encouraging people to take the leap into entrepreneurship.

Maynard Evans High School

Evans’ Graduation Rate Shatters Records In 2006-07 Evans’ graduation rate was 50 percent. The school and community partners began working collectively to break down the barriers obstructing students’ potential and create a supportive school culture where students could academically thrive.

In 2010, UCF co-founded the successful Community Partnership School™ model, a partnership with Children’s Home Society of Florida and Orange County Public Schools at Evans High School. All community schools share the same focus – to assess and meet the unique needs of the school community. However, they vary in their approach to engaging partners and organizing resources. “Community school” is a term used to define an approach used to improve the success of students, families, and a community through collaborations between a school and a community partner(s).

These efforts have paid dividends as we congratulate Evans High School, Florida’s first Community Partnership School (CPS). Evans had the highest increase in graduation rate of all Orange County Public Schools in 2019-20, up 10.8 percentage points, from 86.8 to 97.6. Evans became a CPS in 2010, and in the decade that followed, graduation rates increased by 35 percent.

Maynard Evans High School Trojan Band earns multiple top awards during their 2020-2021 Music Performance Assessment!

A special congratulations to the Evans High School Green Machine on their District MPA's. The band students worked to perfect their solo and ensemble performances, then attended a virtual meeting with a Florida Bandmasters Association (FBA) certified adjudicator to earn a rating on their performance. In total, the Trojan Band students earned 37 Superior, 11 Excellent, and 2 Good ratings. Additionally, 8 solos and 1 ensemble have qualified for State Solo & Ensemble!

"In the midst of a global pandemic, and the majority of our band students being LaunchEd, the traditional idea of “band” looks very different than it has in the past" said band director, Mr. Ford. Taking everything into account I am very proud of this achievement and the progress of our program thus far. Please understand that what our students are doing is not normal, and it is not easy. This is a testament to the dedication of our students, as this event was completely optional, and many of the schools in our district decided not to participate at all. Thank you for your continuous love and support of the Trojan Band program, the fine arts, and most of all our students continued Mr. Ford.

Chris is our F Horn and Mellophone section leader and will be performing at FBA State Solo & Ensemble as he recently earned a Superior rating for his solo performance at the district level.

pproximately 60% of restaurants fail within the first year of operation and 80% fail within the first five years. These numbers are a harsh reality for many restaurant owners, however on the flip side, the remaining 20% of restaurants go on to find longterm growth and success. That is the company that Negril Jamaican Restaurant finds itself in. Now considered an Orlando mainstay, Negril's touts itself as being the most authentic Caribbean restaurant in Orlando.

In businesses for over 16 years, owner Steve Myers attributes the majority of his success to serving authentic, fresh Jamaican cuisine at an affordable price. When we first opened, "having dishes at a price point of $3.99 was important to get people in the door" said Myers.

Due to the success he's had over the years operating Negril, and of course

how tantalizing the food is, it's easy to assume that Myers attended culinary school to hone his skills.

However, you would be shocked to learn that this former truck driver has no professional culinary training. Instead, he learned how to cook from observing his parents, and the recipes featured at Negril's, are courtesy of his grandmother.

Restaurant." To that end, six years ago began a successful back-toschool giveaway that he hosts at his Pine Hills restaurant location. The annual event was unfortunately canceled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic but typically features pens, pencils, backpacks and other items needed to help kids start the school year out right.

What started as one restaurant in Pine Hills at 6301 Silver Star Road has flourished to three locations including a location in Ocoee at 2795 Old Winter Garden Road and a third restaurant located at 2254 S. Kirkman Rd. When asked the question "What's next?" Myers, excitedly replies, that he has something special in store for the Pine Hills location so stay tuned.

We can't wait to see what he has planned.

Myers is committed to the improvement of the community and believes that more needs to be done in terms of support from the government for Pine Hills.

"Things happen elsewhere that don't happen here." Myers has complained about the stoplight right outside the front door of his restaurant on the corner of Silver Star Rd. & Powers Drive in Pine Hills where several dangerous accidents have occurred. That intersection needs work. If it were in another community, it would be fixed." Our community deserves better!

Myers is extremely aware of his role in the community. In fact, as he puts it, "without the community, there would be no Negril Jamaican

've heard for years that "content is king!" To be honest, this statement was something that I would rattle off in conversations about media; typically websites. However, somehow, I found myself not even heeding the power of my own words. Instead, I was rhetorically spouting the cliche. But to use another cliche, which resonates especially more now than ever before, "words have power!"

While I cannot play any instrument, I am a huge music fan. One of my favorite artists of all time is his "Royal Highness," Prince. I'll never forget back in 1995 when it seems like he went off the deep end and started, dare I say, acting weird. I do realize that I am saying this about a man whose outfits sometimes included him showing his bare rear end, but I am not a fashion trendsetter so what do I know? During that time, Prince began a protest of sorts when he stopped using his name and instead resorted to a symbol. In fact, he wanted people to refer to him as T.A.F.K.A.P or "The Artist Formerly Known as Prince" and began writing the word "SLAVE" on his face.

Being the fan that I was, especially when this was during a time when I lived in Minnesota, (the home of Prince) and I just wanted him to get over whatever this phase was and get back to making good music. I was clamoring for a follow-up to "Purple Rain" or "When Doves Cry". I was too uninformed and lacked the understanding at the time to realize the point Prince was trying to make. He wanted to own his masters.

Conceptually, I knew what he was talking about but it would take years before I realized the gravity of what he was fighting for. I didn't fully appreciate that Prince was a creator!

And when you are a creator, only you can place value on your work and what you feel it is worth. Now of course there are other forces at play including market value, comparable work, etc. However if someone is attempting to dictate to you what they are willing to pay for your creation, you can either accept it if you feel it is appropriate or you can reject it and fight for what you believe your worth is.

Keeping with the music theme, I was also too young to realize the impact and popularity of singer/songwriter and philanthropist, Ray Charles until Jamie Foxx portrayed him in one of my all-time favorite movies, "Ray", the 2004 biopic about the singer's life. Ray Charles' controversial blend of gospel and blues made him one of the top-selling recording artists of his era including the hit "I've Got A Woman" (think Jamie Foxx and Kanye West's "Goldigger) that would forever change the norms of R&B, rock, and pop.

The movie highlights Charles's demands to own his own recording masters. During a time when this was unheard of, Charles negotiated the feat of gaining ownership of his master recordings - a move that would pay literal dividends as he had a net worth of $75 million at the time of his death. Only then, I fully understood what Prince was trying to accomplish.

Over the past couple of years, I have been intrigued by media mogul Byron Allen. What is unique about his story is that I remember him being a comedian and a TV show host but I had no idea the journey he was on in terms of media ownership. In June 2016, his company, Entertainment Studios acquired The Grio, a news website that includes stories of interest to African Americans. In 2018, his company acquired The Weather Channel from the media conglomerate Comcast. Not to outdo himself, Allen's newly formed company then ascended on a shopping spree of sorts and in the span of two years, acquired 21 television stations and over-the-air networks. Needless to say, I am intrigued by what he has been able to accomplish. What is important to note is Allen's reasoning for the acquisitions he made. Mr. Allen believes, as I do, that as AfricanAmericans, it is important that we control our image, our likeness, and how we are depicted. It is important that we have our own voice so that we can control the narrative as it relates to us; our community, how we see the world and how the world sees is us. So yes, while content is king, ownership is paramount.
