When the facility is fully staffed, it will have more than 60 beds, including 48 in the inpatient unit.

“We’ll have access to a very large population of kids,” Axelson said, “and we hope to learn more from those kids, and their families, so we can improve our diagnoses and treatment. Because we do have a long way to go.”

Research is ongoing into why a growing number of children are exhibiting symptoms of mental illness. Limiting that effort, though, is a lack of professionals entering the field compared with other medical disciplines, a lack of public and private funding for treatment, and the long-standing stigma of the disease.

“Mental health [problems] are illnesses, they’re not choices,” Fischer said. “There are treatments, just like there are for other illnesses. We’ve got to change the stigma.”

Some administrators from other hospitals around the country questioned Nationwide Children’s investment in behavioral health, Fischer said. “They say, ‘It’s not a moneymaker.’ Well, that’s not the criteria at Nationwide Children’s Hospital for why we do something, and it shouldn’t be the criteria for others. We’ve got to change that [mindset] as well.”

Nicklaus have been a dynamic team in their shared mission of ensuring that children receive the best medical care available, whatever the hurdles. Their hope is that this work continues long after they’re gone.

To that end, an endowment fund has been started for the Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation. The goal of this endowment fund, which has been named the Jack and Barbara Nicklaus Children’s Legacy Fund, is to raise $80 million—in honor of the 80th birthdays that Jack and Barbara celebrated earlier this year. The couple will celebrate another milestone in late July with their 60th wedding anniversary.

“The goal is to see that the Foundation goes on and on, beyond not only Jack and Barbara, but for generations to come,” said Patty MacDonald, president and CEO of the Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation. “Going forward, we can withdraw a percentage every year and designate it for programs, research, whatever the needs are. The point is to have sufficient funds in perpetuity.”

Barbara joked that when the idea was presented to her, she wished, for maybe the first time in her life, that she were older.

“It’s such a wonderful honor, that this would be the goal for our birthdays,” she said.

Jack, meanwhile, is pleased that the initiative that Barbara started is on its way to a permanence in making a difference in the lives of struggling children and their families.

“We’ve had such great results from what we’ve done, and we’ve helped a lot of kids. And Barbara’s been so great in the way she’s led the Foundation. It’s changed my life,” Jack said.

“I’ve said many times, she supported me for 50 years, now it’s my turn. That’s what I’ve been doing. I’ve really enjoyed it, and it’s been eye-opening to me.

It’s 1940, and 18-year-old Wendy Lugg has come from Wales to get a nursing degree in London. She didn’t expect that to mean putting her own life at risk, but this is The Blitz during the Second World War. Waves of German bombers attack London as Adolf Hitler tries to destroy Great Britain’s morale and, if possible, erase it from the map.

Wendy hurries down the steps from the hospital where she works and lives into the perceived safety of the Underground, London’s subway. Some nights, she makes three or four such dashes. But this is war, there is nothing to do but work and try to survive.

Wendy tells these stories years later to her son, Nick Price.

“She said it was brutal,” Nick said of The Blitz. “That had to be a harrowing thing for a young woman.”

Wendy eventually gets her commission as an officer in the British nursing corps and is sent to India. There, she meets an artillery officer named Raymond Price.

They marry in December of 1945 in a church in Belgaum, in northern India.  Their adventure together has begun. The Blitz. The war. India.

onto Jupiter Island, a long finger of secluded tropical beauty along Florida’s southeast coast, makes quite an entrance. You cross a drawbridge over the Indian River and drive beneath a scenic canopy of trees on the other side. A right turn at Hobe Sound Beach leads to the home where Nick Price has lived for more than two decades.

Price’s driveway gives Augusta National’s famed Magnolia Lane a run for its money.

Seriously, he’s got his own Magnolia Lane-like canopy of ficus and banyan trees.

One giant, multi-trunked banyan tree towers over his house. Price greets his visitor in the driveway beneath the banyan, which is quite the conversation starter.

Yes, Price says, he considered putting a treehouse up there for his three children (Greg, Robin and Kim). Then he learned that Florida law, due to the threat of hurricanes, required even a treehouse be built to code. That made it cost-prohibitive—five figures—and worse, took all the fun out of it.

Inside his home, his trophy collection is sprawling, too. The man is in the World Golf Hall of Fame and made winning look stunningly easy for a half-dozen years in the 1990s while piling up two PGA Championships, an Open Championship and a pair of Canadian Opens among his 48 victories worldwide. Three times he served as captain of the International team in the Presidents Cup, the first time here at Muirfield Village Golf Club in 2013.

Widely considered one of the most gentlemanly players in the long history of the game, Price is a worthy choice as the Honoree of this year’s Memorial Tournament presented

by Nationwide.

Several glass cases are built into the outside wall of his office and they’re filled with memories from events big and small, from the Associated Engineering Open to three Zimbabwe Opens to major championships.

✶ ✶ ✶ ✶✶ ✶✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ barely have time to catch their collective breaths after the war ends. In 1946, she gives birth to their first son, Kit, in Karachi in what was then known as British India. Later that same year, violence erupts in the region. It’s a civil war along religious lines between the Hindus and the Muslims.

An agreement is reached, partitioning India into two states—the Union of India and the Dominion of Pakistan.

This means the end of British Raj, or Crown Rule. Karachi becomes part of the new Pakistani (Muslim) state. The Prices

Among trophy statuettes of Byron Nelson (Byron Nelson Classic), Arnold Palmer (PGA TOUR Money Leader) and Payne Stewart (Payne Stewart Award), is the Claret Jug for the 1994 Open Championship. On the shelf, just above it is the case that holds the accompanying gold medal.

“That one,” Nick says, “is very special.” His far-away look suggests that his memories of that Open are as fresh and warm as bread just out of the oven.

His office is lined with photographs (some of aircraft, another of his passions), paintings and books.

Price is hooked on the journals of the early African explorers, men whose adventures can’t be duplicated in a world where Google Earth sees everything.

“I’m not a hunter, but I enjoy the stories,” Price says. “These guys had a sense of adventure and bravery, and they went into areas where no white person had been before. If something happened to them, you wouldn’t even find their bones. Their adventures were amazing.”

and the other British families are no longer welcome.

The Prices get passage on a military evacuation train, but it’s a long and dangerous trip, rife with threats of violence. Each time their train is stopped, Raymond and Wendy hide their infant son, Kit, under the seat in their cabin and brace for an attack. Luckily, none comes.

The train moves on. They escape. They reach Bombay (now Mumbai) and safety … temporarily.

✶✶✶✶✶ outdoor sports the Price boys—Kit, Tim and Nicholas—didn’t play growing up in Salisbury, Rhodesia.

Nick ran cross country and played cricket, soccer and rugby.

Then, Tim did something that proved to be important.

He and two friends chipped in to buy a bag of used golf clubs.

It wasn’t a set, just three dozen assorted clubs in a canvas bag that had a piece of rope for a strap.

“I was the caddie when we started,” Nick recalls. “I

remember how that rope cut into my shoulder. So after a while, I started dragging the bag down the fairway.”

Nick played as a lefty at first but switched to cross-handed since there was just one left-handed club. His brothers were impressed with how quickly Nick got a feel for this curious new game. Nick began playing golf as often as he could at Warren Hills, a local club where juniors could play on weekday mornings during the school holidays. He quickly improved. Nick, about to turn 13, sank a 4-foot putt in fading evening light to shoot 71 and break par for the first time.

“It was an electrifying moment,” Price says.

It was the start of something big. By 1974, Nick had become an accomplished junior player in his small corner of the world. A friend urged him to try the Optimist Junior World tournament in San Diego. It was a stretch for the family budget, but Wendy agreed to let Nick go and she tagged along.

The flights were long, but the scenery was stunning.

“Mom was amazed at the size of America,” Nick says. “I looked at a map before we left and figured that Rhodesia was about the size of Montana.”

But he was about to turn 18, which meant he owed his country 12 months of military service. And that was about to become dangerous.

✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ RAYMOND PRICE gets new orders in late 1947. He gets posted to Sudan, a British colony on Egypt’s southern border, adjacent to the Red Sea. The Prices gather their belongings, board a ship and say their final farewell to India.

While sailing to their new home, civil war breaks out in Sudan, and the British diplomats there make hasty exits. The ship with the Prices aboard changes plans and doesn’t put into port in Sudan. Instead, it continues south along the eastern coast of Africa.

The Prices are suddenly on another odyssey.

American juniors were curious about his homeland.

“They’d ask, ‘You’re from Africa, why aren’t you black?’ ” Price says. “Or they’d ask, ‘Do you ride an elephant to school?’

I’d say, ‘No, I usually ride my bike.’ ” Nick played four rounds at Torrey Pines that week and won, beating future professionals such as Gary Hallberg and Hal Sutton. “I was 17; I didn’t know how good I was,” Nick says.

Coming home—after a pilgrimage to Disneyland—was a challenge. Winning the Junior World came with a trophy so big, Nick had to carry it on the plane. “That was a real pain,” Nick recalls. “We put it on the floor between our seats. People were asking about it.”

He had gone to America and beaten the world’s best players his age.

“It changed my life for a little bit,” Nick says.

“Two guys were killed, and that first night I was sleeping under the stars,” Price says. “It was like, ‘Welcome to the war.’ It wasn’t a very good start.”

✶✶✶✶✶ even somber. It was March 1976, and Nick Price was among 98 young men conscripted for 12 months into the Rhodesian Air Force. The bus was taking them to the air base at New Sarum for 14 weeks of training.

The regimen included rising every morning at 4:45 for physical training. “It was a sudden transition from the life of a schoolboy to the iron regimen of the military,” Price says.

Meanwhile, violence had broken out in Rhodesia, the start of a civil war and a long, dark time in the country. The rise of black nationalism is a challenge to the government’s white minority rule. Rhodesia has 300,000-plus whites and 4 million blacks. The black nationalists are from rival factions that oppose each other and the government, creating a war with three sides.

A further complication is that guerilla fighters hide out in training camps in neighboring Mozambique. They attack in Rhodesia, then go back across the border.

Six weeks of training passed when Price’s drill instructor made an announcement. “Well done, ladies,” Price recalls him saying. “I have good news—you just got another six months slapped on to your service time.”

There were groans and a few wails. The government suddenly needed troops. “Guys who had calendars and were crossing off the days as we went just tore ’em up,” Price says.

“It was not a good day for our morale.”

Price was slotted into communications. His first posting after training ended was as a radio operator at Fort Victoria.

He was up late his first night there, getting his radio working.

When he finally crawled into his sleeping bag, he was stung in the back by a scorpion and spent the rest of the night writhing in agony.

After two weeks, he was repositioned to Rutenga, a makeshift airfield on the eastern border near Mozambique.

Several vehicles behind Price in the convoy were ambushed.

Price and his radios were usually on the move, relocating as needed. Once, Price went with the police reserve air wing to look for a patrol that had lost communication. “We flew over this area at 800-1,000 feet. I saw the moonlight glint over the lake. It was beautiful,” he says. “I saw a couple of flashes. I didn’t think much about it, but when we got back, I saw two holes in our helicopter.”

After one raid on training camps inside Mozambique, Price heard from a pilot that a wounded casualty was being evacuated. The helicopter landed 70 yards from Price’s position, so he rushed out to help. Medics treated the bleeding soldier, but he needed urgent care.

“The medics said we’ve got to transfer him to a field hospital,” Price says. “I said, ‘Give me his name and details, and I’ll send them ahead.’ They said, ‘Rifleman G. Fanner.’

he runs into an old army buddy who has taken up residence in Durban. “This is a really nice place,” the army pal tells Raymond. “Durban is very British.”

Raymond hears stories about fuel rationing and food shortages and widespread misery in England. His country is still in shambles as it rebuilds from war. So he decides to retire from the military, take his pension and stay in Durban. He lands a position with a company that manufactures clothes. After a time, he starts his own clothing manufacturing company.

The future seems uncertain, but Raymond and Wendy aren’t afraid to start over, strangers in a new land.

His tour of duty ended in October 1977.

The first thing he did after returning home from the air force was to turn pro as a golfer.

NEW GOLF PROFESSIONAL Nick Price chased his dream in 1978 with what amounted to a wing and a prayer. He had $250 in cash, plus his clothes, his golf clubs and a 1964 Peugeot with 180,000 miles on it.

He won some modest checks at first, but after a run of poor play the next year, Price was down to his last $200 when he arrived at the British Airways Open on the Channel Islands.

“I knew this was my last one,” Price recalls. He finished fifth and scored £800 (British pounds). Then he placed ninth in Belgium, 53rd in The Open Championship at St. Andrews (won by Memorial Tournament Founder and Host Jack Nicklaus), and was second in The Netherlands a week later, worth £3,750. “It was like I won a lottery, it was so huge,” Price says. “I was starting to feel like maybe I can make a living out of this game.”

I thought, ‘It can’t be Graham!’ But it was. Graham Fanner lived seven houses away from me.”

Price’s friend didn’t survive the second helicopter trip.

“I think about him to this day,” Price says. “Graham was so smart … he was going to become a doctor. It’s all so damned unfair. You see death around you, and it’s so random.”

By the time guerillas shot two passenger planes out of the air, the first one in September of 1978, Price was out of the war. His tour of duty ended in October 1977. The first thing he did after returning home from the air force was to turn pro as a golfer.

Well, not the first thing. First, there were beers.

✶✶✶✶✶ puts into port for 10 days in Durban, South Africa. It looks like a beautiful place. No new orders are forthcoming from the army in the wake of the Sudan crisis, so Raymond Price surveys the city. By chance,

Price finished 51st on the European Tour’s Order of Merit (money list) and earned exempt status. So he had officially arrived, even if living out of a suitcase for 22 straight weeks at one point wasn’t necessarily glamorous. “I got on the Tube stations [London subway] two or three times with golf clubs and my luggage,” Price says. “I wonder if any of today’s pros have done that?”

Price progressed nicely up the European money list the next few years and even won the 1980 Swiss Open, but by that year’s end, he was slumping and felt terrible about his game. Back home that winter, he noticed how much fellow countryman Denis Watson had improved his swing. Watson said he’d started working with David Leadbetter, also a Zimbabwean based in the U.S. Price often stayed with Leadbetter, then living in England, when he played on the European Tour. So their partnership was an obvious one, if not inevitable. Leadbetter remembers the 12-year-old Price, who was four years younger than him, riding bicycles with him to their local golf course

when they were growing up in Zimbabwe and struggling up a steep hill as they pulled their bags on trolleys (pull carts) alongside their bikes.

“Nick called me and said, ‘David, I want to make some changes, and I want to play in the States. I’m sick of this weather [in Europe]. I’ve got to get out of here.’ ” Leadbetter determined that Price’s problem was a steep backswing followed by a shallow forward swing. A lot of work ensued, notably a drill in which Price started a backswing with his arms already parallel to the ground and his hands already cocked. “He hit thousands of balls with that drill,” Leadbetter recalled. “He hit some funny shots now and then, but his ball striking was very solid after we started working. All Nick needed was to be guided. He was already pretty knowledgeable about the game. He used a set of Ping irons to finish second at Q-school, and I’m 99 percent sure those irons belonged to my wife Kelly.”

After four months under Leadbetter’s direction, Price led The Open Championship at Royal Troon with six holes to go.

“I knew exactly where I stood,” Price says. “I had just stiffed a 5-iron at 12 for three birdies in a row. I was three shots ahead—and I’ll never forget it—I told my caddie on the 13th tee, ‘That’s it, Kev [Kevin Woodward], we’ve got this thing!’ Famous last words. Never again did I say those words to anyone.”

A bogey at 13 followed. At 15, Price hooked his tee shot into the left rough. He hit a 4-iron well, but his ball nicked a small, diagonally running ridge just in front of him and sent his shot careening against the wall of a greenside bunker. He had to play out sideways and made a double bogey.

Meanwhile, Tom Watson posted his score and was tied with Price. “I didn’t fancy my chances in a playoff with

“That week was an emotional wringer for me,” Price says. “I probably got only 12 hours of sleep all week. That evening I won, I had a few beers with the guys who worked in the locker room and wondered, ‘How in the hell did Jack ever do this 70 times?’ ” The rest of the mid-1980s weren’t bad. Price won the 1985 Lancome Trophy, lost the ’86 Western Open to Tom Kite in a playoff, had two top-10 PGA Championship finishes and shot 63 in the 1986 Masters, a tournament record.

It was another heartbreaking loss in The Open Championship that, ironically, was the key that opened the door to success.

At Royal Lytham & St. Annes in ’88, Price went head-to-head with Seve Ballesteros, the Spanish superstar whose short game was magical. Ballesteros made a superb pitch on the final hole to clinch the victory, a pitch that nearly went in.

“I played beautifully. I may have hit more fairways and greens than him, and I still came in second,” Price says. “When Seve beat me there, I realized then that my short game was not strong enough. Seve drilled that point home. He taught me a fantastic lesson.”

Price was 31, and his determined, new-found focus on improving his chipping and putting turned him into the man to beat in the first half of the 1990s.

He won the 1991 Byron Nelson Classic and Canadian Open. He earned his first major championship at the ’92 PGA Championship with a ball-striking clinic at Bellerive in St. Louis. He had already finished sixth and fourth, respectively, at the Masters and U.S. Open that year.

At Bellerive, he drove it straight and longer than usual, and that PGA turned into Price’s launch pad to greatness.

“Nick was an early adopter to the new solid-core golf ball,” said former TOUR player-turned-television analyst Brandel Chamblee. “Nobody else used it at first. He went from 97th in driving distance in 1990 to sixth in ’94 and picked up almost 15 yards. That

Tom Watson,” Price says by way of explaining why he played a chip too aggressively at the 17th hole that led to a costly bogey. He parred the 18th to share second place with Peter Oosterhuis. Price was crushed, but as he made the long drive back to London the next day, he was buoyed by one thought: “I realized at age 25 I could win a major.”

The following summer, Price made it into the elite field of the World Series of Golf in Akron, Ohio. Firestone Country Club’s South Course and its small greens and narrow fairways appealed to Price, a straight driver and precise iron player.

He never faltered, won by four strokes, and got a handshake on the 18th green from Nicklaus, who played in an earlier group but waited around to congratulate him. The victory came with a 10-year PGA TOUR exemption, which set up his career.

green at the par-5 17th. After he rolled a 35-foot eagle putt into the hole, he made a memorable, emotional leap into the air, the photo op of his life.

“It was almost like it all happened in slow-motion,” he says. “I was so happy to make that putt.”

Parnevik faltered coming in, and Price had his Open after two near misses. In his winner’s press conference, he half joked that he’d had one hand on the Claret Jug, then the other, and now, finally, he had both hands on it.

“I was on top of the world,” Price recalls. “You dream of that, but you never really know if it’s going to happen. They gave me that jug and I saw my name on it, and then all the other names. It was an amazing feeling.”

Less than a month later, Price blitzed the PGA field at Southern Hills in Tulsa, Okla., by six shots.

translates to three-fourths of a stroke per round, and that lifted Nick from a good player to a best-in-the-world player. He was smart; he took advantage of a new technology.”

Price won four more times in 1993, including at THE PLAYERS Championship, of which he says, “The best I ever played tee-to-green in any event.”

He finished ’93 No. 1 on the PGA TOUR’s money list and was voted Player of the Year. In 1994, he won six times, including the Western and Canadian Opens. And he won back-to-back majors, The Open Championship at Turnberry and the PGA Championship at Southern Hills.

At The Open, Price was three shots behind Sweden’s Jesper Parnevik early on the back nine at Turnberry and was not hitting it well. He birdied the 12th hole, then saved par at 13 with a deft flop shot from behind the green and another par at 14 when he played a bump-and-run chip beneath television cables that marshals held up for him. There was his short-game focus paying off when it mattered.

A superb wedge shot and a clutch 12-foot putt got him a crucial birdie at 16, then Price pumped a 4-iron onto the

IN 1962, Raymond Price moves his family north to Rhodesia, effectively a self-governed British colony. It’s a prospering, younger country that seems full of opportunity without racial tension that is rising in South Africa.

Raymond sells his car, a Plymouth with big fins, and the family travels by train. Fritz, the family’s pet dachshund, spends much of the two-day train trip beneath the seat.

The Prices resettle in Salisbury, the Rhodesian government’s seat. Although gas is a luxury, as are cars, Raymond uses

Between 1991 and 1999, Price won 38 times around the world. And that included a curious three-year dry spell on the PGA TOUR after ’94. “When Nick got to No. 1 in the world, it was almost like, ‘I’ve done it,’ and he didn’t like what came with being No. 1,” Leadbetter said. “There were a lot of demands on his time. Greg Norman enjoyed the limelight, but Nick was like, ‘Unhhh.’ He didn’t enjoy it at all.”

Paul Azinger won the 1993 PGA Championship, the one sandwiched between Price’s PGA wins. He remembers how quickly Price rose to the top.

“Nick was an incredible ball striker, the type who could make another pro insecure about his own abilities,” Azinger says. “He was also a great player. Most tour pros admire great players more than great ball strikers, because great players handle pressure. When Nick won big, it changed our perspective of him.”

Price’s eight-year run was as fine as any player in the modern era … not named Tiger.

the proceeds from selling his clothing company to buy an older Jaguar that seems “as big as a bus” to young Nick and to start a ladies clothing manufacturing company.

They enjoy their new homeland. “We drove a lot. My dad was good at exploring the country,” Nick says. “He loved the bush and had a sense of adventure, obviously.”

Raymond’s passion is fishing, so the trips are usually to rivers, dams and lakes, and the Prices often stay in cheap rental cottages in national parks.

After five years in Salisbury, a lifetime of heavy smoking catches up to Raymond in 1967. He dies after a long battle with lung cancer. He is 55. Nick is only 10.

Kit, 21, takes over the family business and assumes the role of fatherly figure in Nick’s life. The Prices downsize their only car. Wendy takes a job at the factory. She leaves for work at 6:45 each morning and comes home at 5:45 every evening.

Nick is basically on his own, and when Tim moves out a year later, Nick is the only male residing in the household.

Raymond’s passing draws the family closer, but there’s an undeniable hole.

“My life changed,” Nick says. “It was never the same after that.”

That speaks volumes about how he has lived his life.

It has been a long, eventful journey out of Zimbabwe for Nick Price. Both of his older brothers have passed away.

Wendy moved back to England in the late 1970s and lived there happily until she died in 2012.

“Nick’s mother,” Leadbetter said, “was very British and very nice. Nick got a lot of his personality from her.

People from our area in Africa are almost quaint—they’re usually humble, very polite and respectful. The discipline in our schools was very tough. We didn’t come from much. Nick turned 63 at the start of 2020. He loves playing with Greg in the annual PNC Father-Son Challenge, and he’s an avid recreational golfer, not a tournament golfer, when he’s not out fishing.

“Nick doesn’t play in events but he still sends me video of his swings,” Leadbetter said. “He loves chasing the swing.”

Price chased a golf ball for most of his life. He has traveled to all corners of the world, explored new countries and enjoyed unforgettable adventures.

Just like his father. Just like his mother.

A PAIR OF MAJOR CHAMPIONSHIP WINNERS HONORED deceased receive the recognition they deserve by the Memorial Tournament presented

by Nationwide, the Captains Club continues its years-long commitment to identifying distinguished figures from the past for designation as Tournament Honorees.

This year, the Captains Club has chosen to honor Gene Littler and Ted Ray, a pair of U.S. Open champions. Littler, owner of a rhythmic swing, won a U.S. Amateur in 1953, and then a year later won the San Diego Open while still an amateur. He captured 29 PGA TOUR titles in all, including the 1961 U.S. Open. Ted Ray nearly won the U.S. Open on his first try, in 1913, but he and well-known fellow Brit Harry Vardon fell victim to 20-year-old caddie Francis Ouimet in one of the most historic upsets in golf history. Ray returned to claim the U.S. Open title in 1920 at Inverness Club in Toledo, adding to his victory in The Open Championship at Muirfield in 1912. At the time, Ray, a powerful golfer with a burly physique, was only the third man to have won both Open titles.

The following pages briefly chronicle their accomplishments, which were significant not only as personal achievements, but also as contributions to the rich history of the game of golf.

TED RAY Though he was overshadowed by contemporary Harry Vardon, Englishman Ted Ray eventually made his own mark in golf

I

F TED RAY is remembered today, it’s not for the centennial anniversary of his win at the 1920 U.S. Open. It’s for a tournament he didn’t win.

Ray, with Harry Vardon, was one of the playoff losers

to Francis Ouimet in the 1913 U.S. Open, perhaps the seminal tournament in American golf history. Vardon today is renowned as one of the Great Triumvirate (with James Braid and John Henry Taylor), a World Golf Hall of Famer and the namesake of the trophy given by the PGA of America to the PGA TOUR’s adjusted scoring leader. Ray’s name largely has languished as an afterthought.

There was a time, however, when the rugged Englishman from the Channel island of Jersey was one of the most wellknown and well-respected golfers in the world.

Edward “Ted” Ray was born on April 6, 1877. He was a boxer, cricket player and member of the Jersey soccer team that played against teams visiting the island. He learned golf at Grouville Links in the parish of the same name. He worked as a club maker in 1894, before becoming a golf professional and playing in his first Open Championship in 1899 at Royal He worked several jobs over the next decade plus, all while sharpening his on-course skills. He would win many tournaments, including the notable Leeds Cup four times and the 1912 Open at Muirfield, where he beat Vardon by four strokes.

Ray finished second in the 1913 Open Championship at Royal Liverpool, and later that summer embarked on a tour of America with Vardon. The pair played in a series of exhibitions in advance of that September’s U.S. Open, where they met their match in Ouimet. Ray, however, still left his mark on America.

A burly man with a thick mustache, Ray often competed with a pipe dangling from his mouth and a trilby hat atop his head. Sartorially splendid, Ray wore trousers—never knickers—and a long, somewhat oversized jacket over a dress shirt and tie. That jacket flowed back and forth during his golf swing.

T COULD BE ARGUED that Jim Nantz’ ascent to the pinnacle of his profession was in the cards, a pair of Jacks, as it were: Nicklaus and Whitaker. These were among the heroes of his youth, those who made history and those who broadcast it, and that combination was how it began for Nantz.

“How many people really get to grow up and do exactly what they wanted in life?” Nantz said.

He knew when he was 11, “around the time Jack was in his prime.” Each winter break, his family would drive from their New Jersey home to wherever in Florida the PGA TOUR was playing. “I used to march in Nicklaus’ gallery. I would run around for four days, following the greats of the game and watching the announcers climb up into their towers and watch them exit to see what they looked like.

“I love Jack Nicklaus,” he said. “I idolized him as a young boy. I still do today. One of the great gifts of my life is that I’ve had a chance to develop a true friendship with Jack and Barbara and the entire family. They’re incredibly special people. I look up to them so much. They’ve just meant the world to me.”

Golf was part of Nantz’ life from an early age, both as a player and as a spectator. He vividly recalls Father’s Day, 1974, the final round of the U.S. Open at Winged Foot.

“I can still remember seeing Jack and Arnie and Gary Player and standing right there when Hale Irwin hit a 2-iron into the 72nd green. I was also beneath the [television] tower, watching Keith Jackson, who did that tournament, another hero to me. Chris Schenkel and Frank Gifford did that tournament. I’d run from one tower to the next. You watched the players putt out and then see these broadcasters climb back down. It was pretty special.”

Williams. Those who played golf at Houston all did so expecting to play professionally.

When he arrived at Houston, he was put into a four-man dorm suite with three other freshmen—Fred Couples, Blaine McCallister and John Horne. Couples is a World Golf Hall of Famer, McCallister a five-time winner on the PGA TOUR, and Horne was “the best putter of all time,” Nantz once said.

It took one swing from Couples to disavow Nantz of whatever notions might have crept into his head about playing professional golf. “It was August 29, 1977, at Sugar Creek [Country Club] on the west side of Houston. Coach took the seven incoming freshman out and paired us up. None of us knew who the others were. Fred took one swing and it looked like it was in slow motion, and then all of a sudden the ball came flying off the face of the driver like it was shot out of a cannon. I thought, ‘I can’t do that. How can he do that?’ He shot 70. I shot 81.

When Nicklaus holed his birdie putt there, Nantz famously said, “No doubt about it, the Bear has come out of hibernation.” He was pleased with himself initially, though a few moments later, he began questioning whether he had repeated another’s line from earlier in the broadcast.

After the telecast, he brought it up with Chirkinian.

“Kid, you did great,” Chirkinian told him. “No one said it but you.”

As Kaymer stumbled, Cantlay kept pushing, eventually making just two bogeys over his final 36 holes and finishing two strokes ahead of Scott, who posted a final-round 68. Kaymer finished third, four strokes back, after a score of even-par 72.

Never one to show much emotion, Cantlay couldn’t hide his satisfaction, especially in the presence of Nicklaus, who explained his affection for the golfer.

“I’ve always been a fan of Patrick’s,” Nicklaus said. “I thought he had a great amateur career. He’s had his problems in the middle. I see him a lot at The Bear’s Club.

Patrick is a member down there. And I like Cantlay may have heeded Nicklaus’ advice, but he’s never been one to look as though he is enjoying the process. He is as matter-of-fact and stoic as a player could be under such duress, sometimes appearing to be barely engaged.

Kaymer got off to a good start, making three birdies in his first seven holes to maintain his lead. Cantlay kept pace, then closed the front side with three straight birdies to turn in 5-under 31. Scott had played the front nine in 2 under, but a bogey at the 10th derailed his chances, and three late birdies were not enough.

Meanwhile, Kaymer started to fade, suffering a bogey at the 12th hole and then another at the 13th, and then failing to make a birdie at the par-5 15th.

“Yeah, 12, 13, 14, 15, those four holes, I made a couple of bogeys and no birdies,’’ Kaymer said. “The other guys, they made birdies. It was a very vital time. I knew that you can’t really make any mistakes coming down the stretch. I don’t really know what happened on 13 with the second shot. It was very weird from the fairway. Something was maybe on the ball.

AMIE MULLIGAN, the director of golf at Virginia Country Club in Long Beach, Calif., is proud to say that he knew from the first time he set eyes on 10-year-old Patrick Cantlay that the kid was special and that he might have what it takes to one day play on the PGA TOUR.

“At our junior clinics we’d tell kids to throw a ball toward a tree and whoever was the closest

to it would win a candy bar,” Mulligan recalls. “We’d have 100 kids try to whip it over there as hard as they could like Nolan Ryan, and after they all went Patrick took his ball and rolled one that just followed the contours of the ground and kept going and rolled up right next to the root. What is that? You can’t coach that, right?”

Cantlay, winner of the 2019 Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide, has grown up to win much more than candy bars. His mantel is filled with the trophies from an exceptional amateur career—the Phil Mickelson Award as the top freshman in the nation at UCLA, the Ben Hogan, Fred Haskins and Jack Nicklaus Awards as the top collegiate player, and the Mark McCormack Medal, recognizing his 54-week tenure as the top amateur golfer in the world. His splendid final-round 8-under 64 to capture the Memorial Tournament earned him just his second PGA TOUR title, but one day it may go down as the breakthrough victory that sparked a great career.

Whether or not that is to be only time will tell as even Cantlay, in response to a congratulatory text from Ohio State University product John Cook, wrote, “If I never win a major, I’ll always have this win.” Cantlay may be only 28, but he is mature from having experienced enough of life’s

He began playing the game—or at least putting—at his grandfather’s backyard green at age 3. His father was club champion at Virginia Country Club, and Cantlay, the oldest of four children (one brother, Nick, played college golf at Long Beach State, his sister stars at Cal-Poly San Luis Obispo, and his youngest brother, Jack, is already shooting in the 70s) can’t remember a time when he didn’t play golf.

Mulligan made sure Cantlay excelled at the core fundamentals while assistant pro Mike Miles, who played for a stint on the PGA TOUR, introduced him to thinking through how to most efficiently get the ball in the hole. “He would put the ball in the trees and say, ‘What are we going to do from here?’ ” Cantlay recalls.

“You can’t compare the two. Chris’s death is permanent; the injury was temporary,” Mulligan says. “He did a really good job of filing those things [away]. My job at that time was to be a cheerleader and let him realize that his golf game wasn’t going any place, and that whenever he was ready we’d be able to do it again at the highest level. I know at times I was the only person saying that, but he listened to it the whole time and, lo and behold, he’s doing it.”

In February 2016, not long after being told by doctors that he would need to endure another lost year, Cantlay was crossing an intersection with his high school golf teammate and caddie Chris Roth in Newport Beach, Calif., at approximately 1 a.m., when Roth was struck and killed by a car.

The by now thousands of handwritten notes she crafts in old school penmanship are treasured for their warmth and thoughtfulness. And her organizational skills—which have kept family bastions like Muirfield Village Golf Club, The Bear’s Club and the Nicklaus Museum shipshape—are sharpened daily on an intricate and ever-changing, color-coded kitchen calendar that charts the activities of her five children and 22 grandchildren, all of whom live within a few miles of the North Palm Beach home she and Jack have inhabited for more than half a century.

So many years, so many balls in the air. Having them

when I think of Jack and Barbara Nicklaus, they are taking a slow stroll on a hot summer night in the charming downtown of Bethlehem, Pa., the week of the 1992 U.S. Senior Open. Each is holding an ice cream cone, languidly bumping shoulders as they walk. I remember thinking then that the scene couldn’t have looked that different from when they were teenagers in late fifties Columbus. And the phrase that came to mind was—and remains—“When it’s right, it’s right.”

Which leads to the question, “What makes for an enduring marriage?”

You can find answers in dozens of advice books, most filled with chapters on communication, compromise, forgiveness, patience, appreciation, honesty and other professed essentials to enriching life partnerships. Most of all, according to so many experts, a good marriage requires work.

Yet, that’s not the term that applies to the way the Nicklauses have interacted over the decades. The most celebrated husband and wife in the history of golf, who each turned 80 this year and will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary this month, have always made that thing we ominously refer to as an institution seem so easy.

It’s not that the Nicklauses aren’t extraordinarily industrious. Jack will always represent the ultimate in achieving goals through focus, discipline and efficiently applied effort. It’s how he got to 18 majors, designed more than 300 courses around the world, and always hit his number with crash diets. Even today, he takes pride in never missing doing two 20-minute exercise sessions, one in the morning and one at night.

Barbara is if anything even more productive. Her extraordinary philanthropy on behalf of pediatric care earned her the 2015 Bob Jones Award and last year the PGA of America Distinguished Service Award. Her way of supporting and

which a good marriage is sometimes called the 15th club, Jack was considered to have not just the best physical and mental equipment, but also the best life partner—literally the Nicklaus of wives.

“Jack was very relaxed within,” Gary Player once said.

“He had a very unusual temperament for a champion, and it was a great asset. Barbara was a tremendous part of that.”

Charlie Mechem, a trusted advisor to Jack who has known the Nicklauses for more than 50 years, agrees.

“Jack never exhibited any nervousness,” says Mechem, the former commissioner of the LPGA.” He could handle the pressures better than anyone I’ve ever known. But an important reason was knowing that Barbara was there—with him at so many tournaments, walking in the gallery every hole, always taking care of the things that he didn’t have time for. I know it was an enormous mental relief.”

Mechem and his wife, Marilyn, have been married for 67 years, giving him great insight on a vital dynamic in the Nicklaus relationship.

“Barbara has an ability to really tell Jack what he ought to hear, but not hear from anyone else,” he said. “The thing is, I never heard her say it or show it, and I don’t think anybody else did. But you knew it had to have happened. Nobody could possibly have achieved the heights—and the balance—that Jack Nicklaus has without an honest spouse every now and then poking him and saying, ‘Hey, get yourself back down to

But that’s not how Jack and Barbara roll. In my own interactions with them, I’d describe the vibe of the Nicklaus marriage as relaxed and fun. Along with a Midwestern matterof-fact concentration for whatever task may be at hand, a little spice is invariably added to the proceedings in the way of playful but well-aimed zingers.

For example, I can recall Jack fixing me with a stare while lamenting an interview appointment that had been agreed to by Barbara and saying, “Yeah, my wife can’t say no to anybody.” Which drew this dismissive aside from Barbara: “Oh don’t worry about him. He may give you those big steely blues. But he’s a pansy.”

That chemistry lives on, powerfully. And while neither would ever put themselves forth as marriage experts, in discussing their own, they convey an immense trust in their natural compatibility and the bond they’ve built.

“Maybe because we got married so young, we got in the habit of just thinking things are just going to work out,” says Barbara. “Whatever was in front of us, we didn’t think too much about it, we just did it. The main thing was, we always shared the load. Whatever I did was part of him. And whatever he did was kind of part of me. And fortunately we made a few good decisions. Not a lot, but a few.”

Barbara is characteristically lowballing. In a sport in

earth.’ Barb’s being—in the best sense—his greatest critic, is so much a part of why she’s been such an incredible supporter.”

From his earliest days as a professional, Jack knew he was the beneficiary of something special and has always given Barbara credit for the indispensable role she played in his career. These days, he’s only more emphatic.

“She is my best friend, and the most selfless person I’ve ever known,” he says simply. “Because of her, I never had stress, just support. She handled me, and she handled the kids and that enabled me to go ahead and do what I had to do because I didn’t have a conflict. It’s why I consider my golf something we did together. Without her I might have become just another golfer. My dreams became her dreams.”

For Barbara, that did not mean sacrificing her own.

“My dad, Stanley Bash, who was a high school math teacher who never made more than $6,200 a year, used to say to me, ‘Honey, always have a dream,’ ” she remembers. “And his dream for me was to see me helping others, and it became mine, too.”

She has fulfilled it, most publicly in being the founder and chairman of the Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation, for which she has been instrumental in raising more than $100 million since 2004. After so many years of willingly and comfortably living in the shadow of a public figure, Barbara has steadily become one herself—as a giver.

She was planning on becoming a nurse when she and Jack got a good feeling about each other when they first met as fellow 17-year-old freshmen at The Ohio State University in September of 1957.

“I can’t even think of what the specific appeal was,” she says. “Sometimes you meet somebody, and a conversation starts, and you have something to say. And I don’t know why, but we just talked all the way from Mendon Hall to the bacteriology building. And it was just kind of immediate friends. It was just nice, friendly, and we were both so at ease.”

They began to date, and while she would learn soon enough about the extent of Jack’s prowess in golf and “how focused he would be at whatever he wanted to accomplish, what I first saw was honesty and loyalty,” she said.

Perhaps because very soon in Jack’s mind, Barbara was the one. “I never really thought too much about the future.

I just knew we were together, and we just went on and we were happy. We never really talked about marriage. I never really asked Barbara to marry me. But at Christmas in 1959, I gave her an engagement ring and never said a word about it, like, ‘Will you marry me?’ She just put it on her finger.

We were 19, dumb enough to think we understood what we were doing. But maybe we did.”

They married in July of 1960, and by 1962 Jack had turned pro. It meant a traveling life, with a baby (Jack II was

a better golfer. You have to have somebody besides yourself to play for, and Barbara and the kids gave me that, especially later in my career.”

Barbara also proved a valuable guide as Jack dealt with the complications of stardom and fame.

“Everyone who knows her knows how good a sounding board she can be,” says Jack. “There are not many people who are as sensible and reasonable as she is. She’s always had a great way of keeping me levelheaded and moving forward.

And if I did something wrong, she would never hesitate to tell me—in a nice way. And then we’d discuss it. And I’d usually say, ‘I think you’re right.’ ” After the Nicklaus children had all gone out on their own and Jack began to mix in some senior golf, he made another commitment: no playing in a tournament without Barbara joining him. But it was when Jack at age 65 ended his competitive career at St. Andrews in the 2005 Open Championship that he began to step back and look on with pride as his wife took center stage.

Over the last 15 years, Barbara, who describes herself as shy by nature, has proved a dynamic force in boardrooms and at the podium, where he she is poised and eloquent. Jack

born in September of 1961), which presented a dilemma. He wanted to be the best golfer he could, but not at the expense of not spending quality time with his family. He had grown up close to his own parents, particularly his father, and wanted to emulate that relationship.

“We both wanted a semblance of a fairly normal life,” says Barbara. “That’s when Jack said, ‘I’m going to make a commitment. I will never be gone for more than two weeks at a time. I refuse to have my kids going away to college and say, gee, I wish I had known my dad.’ And believe me, they can’t say that. He’s been the best dad.”

Many times in his career, Nicklaus flew home in the middle of tournaments in order to attend a sports event one of his children was playing in and then flew back the next day in time for his next round. And when he found the road life lonely, he would ask Barbara and the kids to join him at an event, a challenge as their brood grew. Of Nicklaus’ 18 majors, Barbara was present for all but the 1963 Masters, because she was giving birth to son Steve.

“Maybe I would have accomplished more if I’d pushed everything else aside,” he says. “But I also think that because my family was more important than my golf game, I became

is often in attendance and joins her in visits to the Nicklaus Children’s Hospital in Miami and pediatric wards throughout South Florida that are funded by their foundation.

“I was always so proud of Jack, and I guess I wanted him to be proud of me,” says Barbara. “We’ve had so many wonderful years that at the time felt like the best period of our lives. But you don’t stop growing as a couple, and right now this segment feels like the best period.”

The change in roles has produced a visible late-life contentment in Jack. “I got most of the recognition early in life, when Barbara realized I needed support, and that’s what she provided,” he says. “Now I’m her support, and I love that she is getting recognition. I see her getting awards, and I see the buttons on my shirt just popping, I’m so proud of her. I haven’t gone to any of them where I haven’t cried.”

Says Barbara: “Quietly, Jack has always been very giving. My biggest respect for him is how often he put himself last in so many things he did. But now he’s become more

public in his giving, and he’s really having a ball. I like that he’s become an old softy, showing a little bit more of his sentimental feelings, letting people see the real Jack.”

That side of Jack was on display last November as Barbara was honored by the PGA of America. She thanked him in her acceptance speech for giving her “the opportunity to test my capabilities,” and his eyes became misty when she looked directly at him from the podium and, in a voice full of emotion, said, “Jack, you’re the best thing that ever happened to me.”

After the ceremony, with the ballroom of the Palm Beach County Convention Center nearly empty, Jack and Barbara danced alone as the band played the 1961 ballad, “Can’t Help Falling in Love.” As a charmingly uninhibited Jack sang the lyrics, Barbara first giggled, then beamed.

PAUL AZINGER We were playing together in the Canadian Open, probably around 1987 or ’88, and the way he played golf, it was hard to not be in awe of him. And he hit these towering irons, and he was, what, nearing 50 years old. Still impressive. And he hit this 1-iron straight up in the air on one hole, and I just couldn’t believe it, and I hadn’t said that much to him, but I just had to say something about this shot, so I said, I’d never seen a long iron hit so high in the air. He just said, I used to hit it higher. That just blew me away.

KEN BROWN Growing up, Jack Nicklaus was the top of the tree; he was the greatest. The first time I saw him I qualified for The Open at Royal Birkdale in 1976, and after I had qualified I wandered to the course to have a look around because in those days there

wasn’t a lot of time between qualifying and playing. So I wandered out and I saw Jack Nicklaus, and he was playing with Tom Weiskopf. And as you actually see someone for the first time, he wasn’t as big as I thought he’d be. They were hitting their second shot to the 13th. And Weiskopf thought he could get there with a 1-iron, so he hit one, and Jack said that’s not how you do it. And in those days the 13th green was surrounded by gorse. I thought to myself, that’s so far and away from how I can play golf at the time, but he hit this big high cut and it stopped on the green.

There was just this aura about him and the way he hit it.

PATRICK CANTLAY I first met Jack in 2011 when I received the Jack Nicklaus Award [as Division I Collegiate Player of the Year], and I’ve had a lot of cool conversations with him. The great thing I learned from talking to Jack is that he thinks about golf as a game compared to how most people see it. He thinks of it in terms of the big picture. Someone might say that you should go work on your short game. Jack might say, Maybe you shouldn’t short side yourself so much or try to leave yourself in better spots. He thinks more in terms of strategy and the whole big picture when others think of it in terms of pieces. There’s a lot to be said for that, obviously.

ACK NICKLAUS has had an impact on generations of golfers, from contemporaries he competed against to players of the current era who have only seen the Golden Bear hit a shot on YouTube or on tape on Golf Channel.

In honor of his 80th birthday in January, players of all ages have shared their favorite stories about Nicklaus, the Founder and Host of the Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide, be it the first time they met the 18-time major winner or simply their favorite encounter. Just about every player expresses a certain level of awe, either about the way Nicklaus played the game or the way he treated his fellow competitors.

“It’s just such a unique feeling to be around him,” says Fred Couples, a past Masters champion and 1998 winner of the Memorial Tournament. “It’s a fun experience to be around him and listen to him, and you just feel good when you see him.”

“Jack is like Arnold [Palmer] in that you have the same feelings for them, that you hope he is always around because of how special he is,” adds two-time U.S. Open champion Curtis Strange, another past Memorial winner.

“It’s hard to believe he’s 80 years old. You think, ‘He’s Big Jack, and he’s just going to go on forever,’ because he has always been there for us players,” former PGA champion Davis Love III says. “He’s been incredible to us. I’m sure we all have a story.”

BEN CRENSHAW I just told this story at the Masters Champions Dinner [last year]. I had the chance to meet him at the 1971 U.S. Open at Merion, and I was so excited about the prospect of meeting Jack Nicklaus that I pretty much lost my head. I’m just this young kid who had qualified

for his first U.S. Open, and at the time I knew Bill Sansing, who was handling marketing for Jack, and I told him I wanted to meet Jack. Bill said no problem, he’s great, he’d love to meet you. Well, I’m staking out the place, and on Tuesday I’m by the clubhouse and I see Jack walking in, and he’s by himself. Oh, my gosh. So I follow him into the locker room and up to the second floor, but I lose him. Then I look in the bathroom and I see him standing there, and I go up to him, and stick out my hand and say, Mr. Nicklaus, I’m Ben Crenshaw, and it’s great to meet you. Well, he was kind of busy. He just looks at me and said, I’ll be with you in a minute.

I was so embarrassed.

But he came out and said

hello, and he could not have been more gracious to a kid he didn’t even know. The thing about Jack is that we all know about the big things he has done, but he is great at the little things, too.

When my mom died, he was one of the first people to call me. That is someone who really gets things right.

I’ve sort of hung around Jack and Barbara enough now to where I’m not really sure the first time I met them officially. The thing about the both of them is how approachable they really are, and how caring they are. They take a genuine interest in what you’re doing. They always say they are here to help, and I can’t tell you what that means to all of us in the game. They are such giving people. I’ve had a chance to pick Jack’s brain on some things, and you would think I could use that better than I have, but I am not afraid to ask him anything. I know he has been that way with a lot of us who live down there [in South Florida].

How good is that?

I actually met Jack at Pebble Beach when I was still in high school. My dad [Jim] knew him, of course. It must have been the 1976 Crosby [AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am]. I was the California State Amateur champ, so I got a spot in the field. I was the amateur partner for one of the pros, and by this time Jack already had written a letter to me about attending Ohio State. He wrote a letter and Tom Weiskopf actually called me. I hadn’t really made a decision yet, but I pretty much knew.

We were at the Lodge having dinner, and he was in the same room. So my dad introduced us, and we talked about some things.

I think I committed to Ohio State the next week.

So, there you go.

I played with Jack at Baltusrol in the third round of the 1993 U.S. Open. I remember being a nervous wreck all morning. On the second hole, he putted it up to about there [a foot], and he marked it. I told him he had plenty of room, and he said, Nah, I’m not going to do that to you. I didn’t know what he was thinking. After we both putted out, he put his arm around me and said that all these people in the gallery were probably going to take off if he putted out and didn’t want them distracting me. Then he said, If I make the putt, then I can’t help it, but otherwise I’m going to mark it. We had a great day, and I played really well.

I once got a swing tip indirectly from him, and I won with it the next week. We were at Muirfield Village paired together in 1992, and I was talking with Jim Gerring, who I was staying with, and I was going on and on about how well Jack putts, how every putt goes in with the perfect speed or just misses, and here he comes up and Jim tells me to ask him about it. So, I ask him about his putting, and he says, Well, I try not to break down, like you did today on 14.

I say, Yeah, that was a bad putt. He says, It was awful. Then he asked me if I minded if he could say something about my swing. What am I going to say, no? He asks, Have you always laid it off so badly at the top? I’m

already laying on the ground bleeding from the putting critique. I asked him to help me stop doing it, and he gave me a few pointers and I went to the range the next morning and just striped it. We were paired together in that third round, too, and he sees me stripe another drive on No. 6, and he’s like, You’re trying that, aren’t you? I say, Hell, yeah, I’m trying a tip from Jack Nicklaus. Well, the next week I went out and won at Memphis.

Then I see him on the putting green the week after at the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach, and he just smiles at me.

Memorial Tournament the first time I ever played there. I was playing with Jack and Don Bies, it was 1979, the year of the bad weather. I was so nervous to meet him.

I actually was practicing how I was going to introduce myself. How about that? Hi Jack … hi Mr. Nicklaus … hello sir.

I get up there on the first tee and, unfortunately, we didn’t have the time to go through any formal greeting.

As tour players, as you know, it’s not a cocktail party. There’s not a lot of time for conversation.

So I don’t know what I was thinking. I walked up and he shook my hand, and he said, I’m playing this ball. Great to have you this week.

Then he walked to his bag, pulled out his driver and we were off. It was kind of like meeting your future father-in-law for the first time. You feel awkward. But, hey, he’s Jack Nicklaus! I was thinking, This is going to be a significant moment in my life. Instead, it’s all business. He was very nice, but after the handshake I wanted the skies to open up for about a 20-minute rain delay so I could have a chance to maybe just sit down and talk to him.

I was hugely intimidated

by Jack in my younger days. Took me a while to get comfortable around him. A great memory of mine is having won the Tournament [in 2013] and watching the replay and watching my kids high-fiving Mr. and Mrs. Nicklaus. Something I’ll have forever.

DAVIS LOVE III I can talk for an hour about what Jack Nicklaus has meant to me and my family. I knew him as a little kid when my dad [Davis Love, Jr.] was playing in the majors, and I remember when he won the first PLAYERS Championship [in 1974] at Atlanta Country Club, where my dad was the host pro. He has been a mentor, and he’s looked after me all the way from then until now, even. He found out I was coming to announce this year at the Memorial, and he said, Oh no, we’re going to have to add more food in the locker room if Davis is going to be hanging out.

He just thinks about others—and a lot of it comes from Barbara, the two of them, they think about other people all the time.

PAUL McGINLEY It was 1992, my first year on tour [in Europe], and we were playing in Spain.

I had played a little bit of college golf with Gary Nicklaus and Gary was playing, too, and Jack was there. I asked Gary, Any chance of having dinner with your dad this week? And he just laughed. On Friday night I get a phone call in my room, and Gary is on the phone and invited me to dinner. And I’m like, Oh my God I’m having dinner with Jack Nicklaus.

So we went to this little Italian restaurant and we had a brilliant dinner.

Asked him millions of questions. There was loads of things to come out of it, and one of them was, he said, Paul, just remember it’s a

The first time I met him would have been at the Memorial the first year I played it, in 2013. But I suppose it’s like that

for anyone who meets any one of his idols. It’s just incredible. He’s a lovely man, and over the years I would see him in the locker room in The Bear’s Club, and he would come over and have his lunch with you, and just ask you how you are and how you’re playing and stuff like that. When you meet people like that, I always feel very fortunate that I get to hang in those circles, you know what I mean? That I get to do what I do for a living and meet people like that is always incredibly nice.

Palmer. You talk about being a little in awe, and they were just great to me. Jack was telling me how to play Augusta, and, obviously, that has been an important part of my success at Augusta so early in my career. I listened to everything he said. I look back on that and think, man, how lucky was I? That was really something special.

MARK O’MEARA First time I met him was at the Masters in 1980.

I just remember wanting to meet him and being so intimidated by him at the same time. I grew up in the Jack era. I missed

Arnold’s time pretty much, so Jack was my guy, and I just stammered and stuttered and introduced myself. I was just a kid, so I was in total awe.

JORDAN SPIETH The first real interaction I had with Jack was pretty significant. It was at the 2014 Masters on the Wednesday before the tournament. There was a cocktail party on the veranda under the tree behind the clubhouse, and at one point I found myself in a conversation with Jack and Arnold

tough game. I’ve spent 90 percent of my time losing and 10 percent winning, and I’m one of the more successful players that ever played.

He was brilliant. I think he’s got a brilliant mind.

His autobiography is one of the best books I ever read. Yeah, he ticks all the boxes for me in a lot of ways.

I showed up on Sunday before the Masters Tournament, driving up Magnolia Lane in my old yellow Nova, and I went straight to the course, didn’t hit any balls. I headed to the putting green, and Jack

Nicklaus was there. He was getting ready to go out with George Burns [another amateur]. I just said hello. It was a little intimidating. I don’t think I went out with anyone that first day, but in the first round who do I get paired with?

Jack Nicklaus. So, it was good that I had gotten the first meeting out of the way on Sunday. I could barely keep my hand from shaking as I tried to put my ball on the tee on the first hole.

But he couldn’t have been nicer as I kind of struggled. I shot 75 and he shot 68, and he hit every green in regulation but took 36 putts—just birdied the par 5s. What a lesson that was in ball striking.

JUSTIN THOMAS I was seven years old and I got to meet him on the driving range at Valhalla in the 2000 PGA Championship. He had some kind of function early in the week. I got to meet him and I got his autograph, and I was so proud that I got his autograph. I remember going into school the next day and telling everyone I met the best golfer in the world, and everyone thought it was Tiger. I said, No, it’s Jack Nicklaus. I might have been seven years old, but me being the golf nerd that I am, I knew what I was talking about.

TOM WATSON I met Jack when we played an exhibition together at Topeka Country Club in March of 1966, and that day was quite a thrill. I

remember I stepped up to the first tee, and I was going to show Jack just how good I was. I was going to put my Sunday best on that tee ball, and I hit it straight up in the air. Popped it up. It went about 150 yards. I played with Arnold [Palmer] maybe a few years before that, and I just crushed that first one in front of Arnie. With Jack, maybe I tried to hit it too hard. I tried too hard to impress him. I don’t know if I ever did that day, but I remember how special it was just to be trading shots with Jack Nicklaus.

I played Doral one year, and I played with him the first two rounds and I hit it like all over the park, but I made the cut—I think on the number— and we’re signing our cards and he says, I’ll meet you on the range.

And I go, What? He says it again: I’ll meet you on the range and give you a little help. So we went over to the driving range, and I was just hitting my driver all over the place and gave me a few

tidbits and a lesson to try to help me out, which was pretty cool. I don’t remember if it worked for me immediately, but I took the bits of information he gave me and tried to use them. How amazing is that?

REFLECTIONS

LOSS We learn more from our losses, so we are told.

Such learning is gold for the famed dogged victims, to absorb, painfully, but must fast take hold and make use on the next shot, the next try, the next nervous moment uncontrolled.

Loss. How to exploit it when opportunity calls.

They stand erect, leaning into their disappointment.

It is the game within the game— the fall and then the constant picking up of the self, the ego, the will, and returning to the brawl.

Plow forward with the hope things will change while attempting to perfect an imperfect craft.

Yet there has to be great winning in the attempt.

There has to be satisfaction in the exchange of sinew and soul for that chance to grasp at air and hold it. You feel one merciful caress.

It’s everything, really, that win so rare, that conquering moment. Then you blink. It disappears.

Loss. The game inflicts its will again, unaware.
