hen BrightMed began to explore ‘Chaos’ as a theme, countries around us have demonstrated unexpected and chaotic behaviour such as, Brexit, Les gilets jaunes (Yellow jackets), terrorist attacks, the rise of right-wing political parties and the escalation of immigration concerns. Not to mention our personal issues such as accidents, loss of loved ones, etc.

The renowned World Music artist from the Balkans: Goran Bregović (along with 20 other performers from Serbia, Bosnia, Bulgaria, etc) and performing his deep and spiritual music: Diwan Saz (from Israel, Palestine, Iran, Turkey and Syria) will star in the concerts.

If BrightMed can impact the Universe in such a way, then why not put a positive spin on it. Therefore, ‘Out of Chaos’ is our theme for 2019.

A great and chaotic street party will take place in The Piazza and Irish Town.

From the 11th to the 13th of June BrightMed will offer a programme of films, talks, conferences, exhibitions, plus a street party and the annual concert inviting artists and inspirational speakers, who will offer solutions and innovations in order to steer us through our chaotic lives.

O

rganisers of Gibraltar World Music Festival (GWMF) and BrightMed festival aim to connect and strengthen communities globally. This year they are also bringing environmental issues into the picture.

Gibraltar’s location and situation is special – the place in between Europe and Africa, based next to the most polluted town in Spain and one of the most polluted in Europe, with one of the highest rates of deaths from cancer (Campo de Gibraltar).

The situation in Spain because of the pollution caused by the refinery in San Roque is serious. In some areas in Gibraltar pollution exceeds the EU norms by three times.

We have two countries fa-

cing the same problems on two sides of the border – high pollution levels. BrightMed Environment project will help to connect people from both sides of the border and help them realise that when we face pollution. Our biggest enemy right now, there are no borders, just humans fighting for survival.

Like every year at GWMF’s Street Party we are going to have a space dedicated to NGOs. This year we are inviting not only NGOs concerned about the environment, but also people behind popular environmental Facebook pages and groups, hoping this will bring environmental issues closer to the public.

- Why do you think it’s important to introduce eco-friendly products to the supermarkets?

- It is important to stock eco friendly products at Eroski for a number of reasons. One of the main reasons is to get consumers accustomed to the changes and encourage them to try these new products.

I feel that In the very near future we will no longer be allowed to sell many harmful products that are around nowadays and it is therefore sensible to make the changes now as soon as possible and be ahead of the trend.

- From which environmentally cautious activities of Eroski supermarket are you most proud of?

- I am very proud that most of our fruit and veg is grown within a few hours from Gibraltar vastly reducing our carbon footprint. Furthermore Eroski has their own brand of fresh products, Eroski Natur, which guarantees all fish, meat, fruit and veg that comes with this Mark is produced to the highest environmental standards and is certified by Marine Stewardship Council or Global Gap depending on the product. This means that products are audited and tested to conform to the standards set by these organisations.

- Do you think in the future it will be possible to put bigger pressure on producers of food and beverages, to pact products in reausable materials?

- I think this will be inevitable and is a trend that has already begun.

However more can be done by corporations, consumers and Governments who should all work together and speed this process up. As a local example the 200% tax on disposable has meant many of these products such as plastic cups are now unsellable due to the price and more environmental products suddenly become more attractive.

The ESG is an NGO (non-governmental organisation) that was formed in 2000. It is a registered charity and works to promote environmental issues within the community. The group is totally apolitical and enjoys widespread support from the community. Alfredo Valencia https://www.facebook.com/verdemarecologistas/ Founded in August 1987. Recently they took a legal action against the Junta for ‘failing to tackle toxic air’ in the Campo de Gibraltar.

Lewis Stagnetto https://www.facebook.com/nautilusproject/ The Nautilus Project (TNP) is a voluntary, non-profit, non-governmental charity which was founded by Lewis Stagnetto and Melanie Soiza-Stagnetto in 2016. The ethos behind it is to empower Gibraltarians with information on the state of our marine environment and the threats affecting it. TNP officially opened its school programs to Gibraltar’s schools in June 2016. With a wide array of marine topics, we seek to enrich local education by introducing students to our marine environment and the animals that live in it. To this end we have been delivering our custom-made talks or have altered them to fit in with what schools are doing at any point within the curriculum.

Initiatives such as #Re-Fill, #CutTheCutlery, #PawsOffStraws, #Loose2Reduce, #Plastic2Paper, #PlasticFreeEvents, #TheGreatGibraltarBeachCleans and #MedOceanHeroes are just some of the campaigns TNP have been running. After lobbying the Gibraltar Government to ban single use plastic bags and microbeads, our petition successfully achieved a Microbead Ban in January 2018.

ince the beginning BrightMed has had the ambition to celebrate the values of Gibraltar using all types of arts. That’s the reason why, in parallel with firstly the Gibraltar World Music Festival and secondly BrightMed events, it has always organised an exhibition at Space 92 linked to the theme of that particular year.

According to these principles, BrightMed has asked Justyna Zelazo to select different local artists and create the exhibition around their own interpretation about the theme: OUT OF CHAOS.

is an award winning street and fine art photographer. Awarded by Gibraltar Photographic Society as a beginner photographer of the year in 2016, the best digital photography in 2017 and the best print colour portfolio in 2018. She is also laureate of the socially involved photo reportage contest organized by Polish Journalists Society.

Her work is highly influenced by her fascination with social behavior and contemporary practices such as leisure, consumption, emotional disconnection, the obsession with eternal youth and the psychological sequels they generate in our everyday life.

A life-enriching journey from very realistic, candid, street and landscape photography, through posed captures and portraits, mysterious fine art photography and conceptual cosmic graphic design to abstract photography. Even for someone who has no direct relation to photographers’ experiences, it is possible to live with them through the same moment in time.

Pure photography with an attempt to depict a scene or subject in a sharp focus and detail, an artistic work or practice that uses digital technology as part of the creative or presentation process. Rich, vivid colours and multiplied shapes, unexpected in ordinary places and everyday situations.

The exhibition by a group of talented artists, showing a different approach to art communication through photography, a colourful manifestation of their impatient minds, bringing a powerful message, making their adventures feel like our own.

is a Scottish designer and artist, working by day as full time graphic designer alongside various music and digital art projects. In 2008, he graduated with a 1st Class Honours BA Degree in Creative Digital Media. Andy’s work is driven and shaped by an enduring fascination with cosmology and reality, often portraying subjects as astronauts, lone figures against vast and chaotic backdrops of the universe. He blends realism with abstraction, using layers of digital imagery, drawings, manipulated patterns that appear both structured and psychedelic. Often his pieces will serve as atmospheric artwork to music albums. He finds inspiration around him in the hidden complexities of life; reacting to the time he is living in today and recording through artistic expression his experiences imagined and otherwise.

Originating from Glasgow, Scotland, Gordon has had a life long creative passion in art and in music and developed his love for photography over the last ten years. Living and working locally for the last five years, with a love for nature and vistas coupled with a keen eye for detail, he has a talent for capturing a moment beautifully. As the lead creative eye and founder of Colores Andalucia events, between DJing and promoting, Gordon finds himself immersed in the outdoors and traveling, capturing and working on new ideas and shots infectiously. He currently has work on display in Gibraltar Face Frames Gallery and in Cafe Solo restaurant in Casemates Square. His centrepiece is the stunning ´Between and a Rock and a Stargaze´ which was captured and developed with life long friend Gary Thompson. This remarkable photograph shows the sheer scale of Gibraltar in our galaxy, the Milky Way.

was born in the Tuscan hills, in Italy. He studied graphic design and photography and at the age of 18, he became a designer at Oliviero Toscani’s studio, where he worked with some of the world’s leading brands following the principles of the modern Bauhaus school of the art workshop. His passion for art and photography led him to exhibit his work at the Brick Lane Gallery in London and the Jinx Gallery in Fukuoka, Japan, and many other in Italy, where he also participated as a visual artist in music and art festivals in museums and historical and institutional locations.

Delgado

Stephen Hermida was born in 1962 and educated in Gibraltar. He initially took an interest in photography as a teenager, and later returned to it in 2004 when affordable digital SLR cameras become widely available. Shortly after he joined the Gibraltar Photographic Society, and today is the current Chairman. In the last fifteen years photography has become a serious passion, and up to last year he combined this with a professional career in banking. It was in 2009 during his first photographic trip to North Africa that he had his ‘damascene moment’ and realisation that people and travel photography would become the core of his inspiration and pursuit as a photographer.

is a student at the University of Leicester who studied photography at Universidad del Rosario in Bogotá. He frequently joins Spéos programs in Paris and London. His passion is street photography, which he is practicing in Paris, Brussels and Gibraltar. He has spent most of 2018 capturing the emerging street art scene of Colombia, including festivals such as Secret Walls and RUDA Fest.

CONSTELLATION+

The Cosmos and the Ocean meet in Biarritz from October 3 to 15, 2019 n The Collective has developed a 15 days programme in Biarritz and echoing the BrightMed Festival n The Ensemble is investing in a cultural partnership and exchange between Biarritz and Gibraltar

C

CONSTELLATION+ is an Arts and Cultural, Ocean themed event. Centred around an immersive installation “Constellation” by artist Rebecca Bournigault, Ensemble Collective have developed a 15 days programme of workshops, performances, interventions and evening events in Biarritz and echoing the BrightMed Festival of Gibraltar.

The CONSTELLATION+ event by Ensemble Collective, composed of Rebeccca Bournigault, Isabelle Desmond, François Marot and Alexie Sommer, provides an opportunity to consider our relationship with the Ocean from a series of different perspectives: a place for exploration; a reserve for biodiversity; a source of inspiration and legends; from the microscopic to macroscopic; distant and close; bright and

opaque; known and unknown.

The Ocean is a subject of fascination, and a realm we need to better understand so we can improve our relationship with and build a deeper respect for this expansive element.

Isabelle Desmond, joint curator of the Gibraltar Film Festival program with Lutz Gregor, has developed cultural links between Biarritz and Gibraltar.

In August 2019, three swimmers from Biarritz will undertake the crossing of the Strait of Gibraltar and will recount their story of this adventure at CONSTELLATION+ in October. Additionally, the short films selected to be screened at the Biarritz event are from the selection to be presented in Gibraltar this year. The Ensemble Collective is investing in a cultural partnership and exchange between Biarritz and Gibraltar.

Systemic

contemporary art This collective of artists, curators and writers develop events connecting contemporary art and cultural / natural activities. By holistically linking intellectual and manual practise, and by putting human beings back into a new cosmological approach, we face the need to understand our role as elements of complex systems. In the face of ecological disaster, how can art intervene and bring about change? What is the language we need? What approaches can contemporary creation take to respond to the emergency? Ensemble is bringing together artists, curators, writers, intellectuals and scientists, to explore artistic practices committed to the ecological transition of society.

rightMed aims to create a new bridge between Business and Culture around the Mediterranean sea and more globallly between the North and the South, the East and the West. The World is more than ever looking for wisdom when it comes to current changes. Through different events BrightMed addresses these challenges and helps bringing positive shift to the World -starting from the personal development and inner transformation, networking with other people concerned about the World and through contact with Art, Film and Music.

BrightMed Education Programme aims to create a platform of involvement for the young generations to develop their knowledge. The trustees of Kusuma Trust Gibraltar felt that this programme is a fantastic initiative that will have a clear and positive benefit to the local community and that’s why they decided to engage with Brightmed for a programme of 3 years starting in 2019. It allows to propose the community various Educational programme in several fields.

On the musical side the students will benefit from the BrightMed Musical Workshops.

After last years’ success this event returns to stage another celebration of music in a dazzling series of workshops, featuring world-leading Artists. The

coruse has more of an emphasis on playing and performance. This gives the students the opportunity of having a lesson that is more focused on their individual needs.

The Brightmed Talks is a morning event where students are becoming transformation agents for themselves and their community. The session will involve international speakers who will share their skills to inspire young people to get they need for a better future. The annual BrightMed Film Festival has unveiled its feature film line-up championing the discovery of emerging voices and celebrationg new work from established film making talents.

Not only that GWMF and BrightMed always give an opportunity to the population of Gibraltar and nearby areas to discover the culture of other parts of the World and to show their own interpretation of it during the Street Party. Local schools such as Loreto School and Prior Park and dance academies are invited to participate singing, playing music or dancing.

BrightMed and Kusuma Trust Gibraltar has agreed a long term partnership in order to share its values and more importantly inmpact in a more efficient way.

The project is to develp the concept by reaching more people in Gibraltar and beyond.

- BrightMed’s vocation of bridging souls and lands and proposing education programmes - musical workshops, Talks, Cinema for students ...- seems to fit the ethical values of the Kusuma trust. What would you like to see more in Gibraltar?

- Gibraltar is very good at figuring out what it needs and what it wants. We lived in Gibraltar and are happy to support initiatives that resonate with us More importantly we believe in giving back to society and would like to encourage others to do the same.

- Dr Pujari, you are the cofounder and the Executive Trustee.

Would you share with us the reasons of your personal involvement in Philanthropy?

- Philanthropy is human instinct.

I have received kindness from many quarters in life throughout and have deeply appreciated it.

We do it because we believe in philanthropy.

Our passion lies in encouraging interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and further education.

However the community remains at the heart of what we do. We invest in professional development that is relevant to community and are happy to support initiatives that we believe will benefit Gibraltar and promote cohesion by providing match funding.

- What does the word Kusuma stand for?

- Kusuma is mother of one of the founders and it reflects the family led nature of trust.

- BrightMed is considering to propose its programmes to other countries such as Spain, Uk and why not more. Would you advise or guide us on the way forward?

- We have supported many community led initiatives in the past We support BrightMed as it originates in Gib for Gibraltar as a platform to celebrate and engage youth in a positive way and promotes cohesion.

- Out of Chaos is the theme of this year, what does this inspire you?

-Chaos to me symbolises diversity and abundance of thoughts and ideas. The conflicts that lives within and outside us that forces us to think and evolve.

During the Spanish occupation period, according to the historian Portillo, this area was a cultivated field known as ‘La Huerta de Cebreros’, having a series of single storey houses facing the principal street, then known as ‘La Calle del Muro’. In 1742, during the Governorship of Lt. General William Hargrave, the south wing of this two storey building was constructed for use as the Garrison Armoury, capable of storing 10,000 stands of arms.

This very strong edifice was designed in the Ordnance style of Georgian England, as found in some of the works of Sir John Vanbrough. Over the years, parts of these buildings have been used as a NAAFI shop, clubs...

Yan Delgado comes from the world of Finance. He spent 25 years in Banking, trading and running Private banking units. Today he is the CEO of Hyperion Group. Pursuing a strong vision in Bridging Souls and Lands, he has founded the Gibraltar World Music Festival (GWMF) 7 years ago and the BrightMed concept in 2016. The BrightMed is an international reunion focusing on Peace inviting inspiring intellectuals and activists as well as offering to artists a platform for all type of expressions (art, talks, conferences, cinema...). Yan is involved in other bussineses such as real estate and focuses on educational programmes via BrightMed.

John Le

John has spent most of the last 2 decades working in the software industry, with a focus on web technologies. After 10 years as a software engineer He moved into consultancy where He quickly learned the value of team dynamics and how most technical challenges are projecting underlying issues with collaboration. So John’s focus shifted to facilitating a safe, creative, collaborative environment. He hosts and produces the well respected Agile Path podcast where He creates in-depth audio documentaries on the topics that most affect organisations transitioning to agile ways of working and other critical issues.

Graham David is the founder of Blue Beetle Productions Ltd, a professional training and coaching company he created in 1996 after he found a gap in the market for live case study and drama-centred learning. Levi Attias has broad experience as a motivational and inspirational speaker. For over 25 years, Levi has been a popular and regular contributor on Gibraltar Radio’s early morning programme “Pause for Reflection” and more recently on Gibraltar Television’s “Thoughts for the Weekend”. Additionally, Levi has been guest speaker at seminars and workshops held, inter alia, by the Lynwood Fellowship and Val Williams MSNU in the U.K. and Angels House University in Thessaloniki, Greece. He has also spoken at Oxford University on the political future of Jerusalem and has lectured at different venues in Spain and Gibraltar on subjects related, inter alia, to Judaism including at the University of Jaen’s Department for Middle East studies. Levi was one of the speakers at the Seminar on the Treaty of Utrecht held in Gibraltar and the Seminar hosted by the Islamic Association of Andalucia. Levi was guest speaker at the Harry Edwards Healing Sanctuary’s annual Open Day. Levi’s speaking engagements have covered a wide range of topics and interests, particularly with regard to inter-faith matters having been Chair of the Gibraltar Inter-faith Group; he also addressed the launch of ‘Understanding Gibraltar’.

Jazz Fm broadcaster Ruth Fisher will compere the workshop performances at the Talks. Fisher has established an enviable and well deserved reputation for in-depth, enthusiastic and informative interviews. Interviewing some of the biggest names in music on her high profile Jazz Fm weekly shows, while also introducing some of the best new talent on the international music scene to a wider audience. Ruth herself is a product of the world famous Purcell music school.

This will be her 3rd year at the Gibraltar World music festival.

Mohammed Nazam is a respected music educator. In February of 2005 Mo was invited to participate in two events for HRH The Prince Of Wales. One was a project that saw the Prince attending a recording session led by renowned music producer Trevor Horn (who has produced worldwide hit records for Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Seal, Yes and Buggles).In March 2005 Mo was invited to a special Celebration of British Music at Buckingham Palace, hosted by HRH The Queen and Prince Phillip, which was attended by over 500 guests, including some of the most influential and popular musicians, composers, artists and producers from the British Music Industry. Since 2001 Mo has worked with The Prince’s Trust on their residential SoundLive courses teaching socially disadvantaged young people (homeless, substance mis-users, ex-offenders) to play instruments and perform live. The week-long course features a strong focus on personal development, team working, communication and motivational skills. Each day the students learn music from around the world and work in bands, culminating in a grand gala concert at the end of the week. He also teaches guitar and leads Jazz workshops at Richmond Upon Thames College in Twickenham.

After last year’s sucess (with more than 200 students at Ince’s Hall) BrightMed returns to stage another celebration of music in a dazzling series of workshops.

Orphy Robinson MBE has developed these particular strategies for the Workshops and will be leading them with the assistance of Lester Batchelor, Dee Byrne and Mohammed Nazam. The course has more of an emphasis on playing and performance and they will create two pieces that will be performed during the BrightMed Talks at Ince’s Hall on the 12th June. This gives the students the opportunity of having a lesson that is more focused on their individual needs.

Lester is a Creative Director, Musician, Composer, Song Writer, Event Producer. Lester’s passion for music began as a young child growing up in London inspired by exuberant music played everyday at home. His mixed heritage parents from Hispanic and Caribbean backgrounds immersed him into a rich mix of music. His mother originates from Portugal and born in Cuba and his father from Panamanian and Jamaican parentage. Lester started playing the Bass guitar while studying design at university and by the time he graduated Lester had already written several songs and composed an albums worth of music. He founded the Brit Funk band ATMOSFEAR and they released a piece of music that entered the top 30 British Pop charts on the first attempt. This immediate success resulted in Lester becoming an MCA / Universal recording artist. Further hits followed, by now the band were firmly established internationally with the best DJ’s in London, New York and Parisian night clubs and disco’s of the time, like Paradise Garage NY, The Loft NY, and Café de Paris. Lester’s musical exploits, was only one expression of his creativity. His professional career blossomed equally at the same time.

Robinson is an award winning multi- Instrumentalist musician who specialises on Vibraphone & Percussion. The winner of the 2017 Jazz FM Awards “Live Performance of the year’ for his Bobby Hutcherson Songbook project. Winning numerous industry awards & nominations since the early 1980s while also appearing on various chart-topping music that have been awarded Platinum, Gold and Silver Discs. Robinson a Producer, Composer & Music Director has written for Orchestras, Film, TV, Opera. & Contemporary Dance. Robinson was invited to be the 2018 Artistic Director for the Gibraltar World Music Festival and will retain a senior position in the festival organizing committee for two years. Orphy is an associate examiner for the Royal Welsh Academy of Music and Drama.

He also sits on the board of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra and work across many education organisations in the UK developing music education strategies and tutoring. He has also been the Festival DJ at the Opening and closing events for the London Jazz festival & at the popular “Summer Soulstice” festival. Robinson created the popular monthly event in London Freedom: The Art of Improvisation monthly Loft session, which has been nominated for the 2019 ‘Jazz Innovation’ award alongside nomination for ‘Live experience of the year’ for Orphy’s reinterpretation of Van Morrison’s iconic ‘Astral Weeks’ album, in the 2019 UK Jazz awards.

Dee Byrne is a London-based saxophonist, composer and improviser. Her collaborations include: Cath Roberts’ ten piece ensemble Favourite Animals, electronics duo Deemer, Northern group Now It Can Be Told, UK/Swiss ensemble Moonmot and Swiss quintet Ydivide. She has also played with Paradox Ensemble (22a records), Beats & Pieces Big Band (efpi records), Nerija (Domino records) and London Improviser’s Orchestra. She is member of Brit Funk outfit Atmosfear, Amy Lives(with original members of Amy Winehouse band) and retro funk group Soul Immigrants.

Her quintet Entropi released its second album Moment Frozen in 2017 (Whirlwind Recordings). The quintet has toured the UK twice and performed at Manchester and Lancaster Jazz Festivals (2016), London and Cambridge Jazz Festivals (2017) and Marsden and Brighton Alternative Jazz Festival (2018).

Dee also co-runs LUME, a small artist-run organisation with a focus on the creation of new original/improvised music. Activities have included a double-bill tour in 2015, a monthly residency at The Vortex, two festivals and performances at EFG London Jazz Festival five consecutive years from 2013-17.

For this year’s Festival, the selection committeehas decided to show two short films and two documentaries: - Les indes galantes (short): Clément Cogitore adapts a short ballet part of Jean-Phili- ppe Rameau’s “Indes galantes”, with the help of a group of Krump dancers, and three choreographers: Bintou Dembele, Grichka and Brahim Rachiki. The Krump is a dance born in the ghettos of Los Angeles in the 90s. Its birth results

- Midnight Traveller (documentary): In 2015, after Hassan Fazili’s documentary Peace in Afghanistan aired on Afghan national television, the Taliban assassinated the film’s main subject and put a price on Fazili’s head. Fearing for their survival, the Fazili family fled Kabul for Tajikistan. Yet after 14 months spent submitting asylum applications that were rejected again and again, they were de- ported back to Afghanistan. It was at this juncture that Fazili picked up his cell phone and hit the record button.

- Félicité (documentary): Félicité is a 2017 Senegalese drama film directed by Alain Gomis. It was selected to compete for the Golden Bear in the main competition section of the 67th Berlin International Film Festival. At Berlin, the film won the Jury Grand Prix award.

At the 2017 Africa Movie Academy Awards, it won six awards which is the highest for a film in the history of the award ceremony, including categories for best film, best actress, best supporting actor, best editing, best soundtrack and best film in an African language.

He is a poet and a former cabinet minister in several Moroccan government departments and now a civil society leader. He has taught at a number of universities and business schools in Morocco, France, Italy, and elsewhere. He actually is the chair “Fonds d’Aide du Cinéma” in Morocco (Film Founding Committee) hosted by the Centre Cinématographique Marocain - Moroccan Centre for Cinematography.

A film is a story of characters, like Félicité - a personality before being a character. A film is also a history, a matter of time and memories, underground influences and sometimes more explicit references. It begins long before the opening scene and ends long after the credits roll. This is particularly true in the case of Alain Gomis, whose projects are always journeys prior to being objects.

A strong-minded woman, Félicité inhabits each and every word she sings into the microphone with her husky, soulful voice. She is like a warrior, proud and tough – sometimes too much so - reminding us of Nina Simone, another woman skilled in the unrelenting combat of the spoken word. Her spirit lurks within this film, bringing to mind the blues piece Ain’t Got No - a story about life in the slums at first, but that is ultimately about resurrection.

Hers is not the only spirit present in the film.

Félicité is also the echo of a Léonard Pongo photograph: diaphanous black and white, shot in slow shutter mode in an ambiguous ambiance. As is often the case with this Franco-Congolese photographer, everything that constitutes the texture of the image is mirrored in the film’s reflections.

Fateful developments and surprising twists in the lives of their protagonists are welcome ingredients for documentary filmmakers. But when the director and his family are themselves the protagonists in their own film, every threatening situation becomes a conflict of conscience. Is it right to film every dramatic moment or is it morally wrong to think about a good film scene in the midst of misfortune?

In 2015, a death threat from the Taliban saw Afghan director Hassan Fazili and his wife Fatima Hussaini, also a filmmaker, in exactly this situation. Together with their two daughters Nargis (11) and Zahra (6), they flee from their homeland to distant Europe in search of safety. The couple, and their two daughters, use their mobile phones to film their journey, which was to last several years. On the Balkan route, during long and uncertain stays in various refugee camps, they draw strength from documenting their difficult situation. Despite adversities and setbacks, the parents never once lose their humanity. They bear all manner of hardships and hope for a better future for their daughters, who become more and more independent as the long journey progresses.

he organisation has decided to convert both sessions of the BrightMed Film Festival in a charity event in aid of GibSams. Suffering from an emotional crisis not only affects the person concerned, it also has a ripple effect on the families who then need of emotional support creating CHAOS. It is important for people to have the opportunity to explore their difficult feelings.

Be listened to in confidence, and be accepted without prejudice, without being judged.

This can alleviate general distress, despair and suicidal tendencies.

Often being listened to is enough to help someone through distressing time. Even just showing that you are there for them, and that you know they are going through a hard time, can in itself be a comfort. For people who are lonely, despairing and possibly even considering suicide, the helpline is often their last hope – a place where they can talk in complete confidence about their deepest fears and darkest secrets.

GibSams volunteers are trained to listen; anyone can talk to them any time, in his/her own way, and off the record. All calls are totally anonymous, completely confidential and untraceable.

The charity’s helpline #116123 opens Mondays to Fridays from 4:00 pm to midnight and 7:00pm till midnight on Saturdays and Sundays. GibSams intends to increase the operational times in the near future once the next group of volunteers have completed their training.

And most of all, it’s about people who care about the arts and culture, who care about society and about the legacy they leave to the next generation.

With this spirit, EMID Gibraltar has decided to build a bridge with the nearby city of La Línea de la Concepcion in the launch of the first edition of the Film Festival in this town. The organisers of the Film Festival have maintained continuous contacts with the authorities of La Línea, led by its mayor, Juan Franco, in order to make this initiative a reality.

- ¿Cuál es el actual estado de las relaciones con Gibraltar?

- La relación actual es magnífica. Llevamos más de 30 años con la frontera abierta y la normalidad que se perdió por desgracia en los tiempos del cierre parece que se ha recuperado. De hecho están volviendo a haber matrimonios mixtos, los vínculos laborales, sociales, deportivos, culturales creo que son máximos y a nivel institucional el Ayuntamiento de La Línea y el Gobierno de Gibraltar mantienen unas relaciones magníficas. También es cierto que el asunto del Brexit está creando una incertidumbre importante.

- ¿Puede ser la cultura uno de los vehículos para tender puentes entre ambas poblaciones?

- La cultural puede ser uno de los vehículos para tender puentes entre ambas poblaciones. Por parte de nuestro Ayuntamiento se está haciendo una apuesta importante en el ámbito cultural porque entendemos que la forma de sentar las bases para mejorar nuestro futuro se basan en la Cultura y la Educación. Respecto de la relación con Gibraltar en este tema la vinculació es muy importante: hemos realizado muchas actividades conjuntas, invitamos a participantes de Gibraltar a muchos de los actos que organizamos... La relación es importante porque tenemos una cultura común; vale que La Línea es una ciudad española y que Gibraltar es un territorio bajo soberanía británica con su idiosincracia propia, pero tenemos unos vínculos culturales muy fuertes y muy importantes.

- ¿Calificaría a La Línea como una ciudad abierta a la convivencia entre culturas?

- Por supuesto que sí. Creo que es una ciudad que, para la población que tiene, es muy cosmopolita, te puedes encontrar con personas de prácticamente cualquier país del mundo. Todo esto es lógicamente por la relación con Gibraltar: muchas de estas personas vienen a trabajar a esta zona y muchos residen en La Línea. Para nosotros es una situación agradable. La Línea ha sido y es una ciudad abierta. En sus orígenes acogió a mucha gente del territorio nacional y por la globalización y por las circunstancias económicas actuales asume un porcentaje de población extranjera muy importante y, además, de múltiples países, culturas, etnias, religiones y todos conviven en armonía. Es una de las cosas de las que me siento muy orgulloso.

olatility,Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity are the common terms used to express the general feeling in an unforeseeable, world which affects us in business, in professional and private life.

MANAGING CHAOS -how to embrace the chaos and provide antidotes to an apparent unstable world both at a corporate and personal level, will be the aim of this year’s BrightMed International Seminar.

The Seminar will take place on the 13th June at the University of Gibraltar, introduced by the Professor Catherine Bachleda, Vice Chancellor of the University, and Dr Darren Fa, Director of Academic Programmes and Research.

Andras Baneth, John Le Drew and Graham David will discuss and share their experiences and provide us with guidance and “tips”.

The organisers of BrightMed have to designed a seminar to appeal to a wide audience, who’s’ daily lives are full of challenges. The seminar will take on a very pragmatic

approach versus a scientific view.

Greater technological demands, increase need to process information, meetings , rapid decision making, magnitud of information to digest and still...the obligation to manage our personal lives, dealing with divorces, health problems or addictions to say the least.

How can we go through all these events generating chaos in our lives? How can we appreciate the lessons and why not reach maturity, serenity, master our days and keep a room for educating our beloved ones.

In a very open, transparent and intimate way, our speakers will address the chaos, provide concrete solutions and answers the questions we might have.

The University of Gibraltar is located further south than any other in Europe with a clear sight of five lighthouses in three countries: Gibraltar, Morocco and Spain and two continents, Europe and Africa. The Europa Point campus is based in two military buildings dating back to the 19th century, including the original fort (the Bomb-house) with its brick-vaulted ceiling. The later Defensible Barracks were designed as accommodation for the soldiers and now hosts most of the University’s teaching spaces. Both structures are now joined by a purpose-built modern atrium.

Professor

Professor Catherine Bachleda is Acting Vice-Chancellor at the University of Gibraltar. She is responsible for providing leadership, developing, implementing and monitoring the university’s academic policies and practices. She is committed to the concept of continuous improvement.

Over the past 30 years, Professor Bachleda has worked in North Africa, the Middle East, the USA, the United Kingdom and Australia in a variety of management, quality, and learning roles, in both academia and industry.

Her leadership positions include: Chief Executive Officer of a leading accredited corporation providing executive and continuing education; Director of a small corporate law firm; Assistant Vice-President for Academic Affairs in an accredited American-style university located in Morocco; and more recently Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the University of Gibraltar. In these roles, she has provided leadership in strategic planning, quality assurance, staff performance management and development, programme design and implementation, resource allocation and statutory compliance. She also possesses extensive experience in establishing accreditation-compliant processes and in business development. Her main research interests lie in the fields of consumer behaviour and services marketing. She was awarded Outstanding Paper in the 2017 Emerald Literati Network Awards for Excellence.

Dr Darren Fa

Dr Darren Fa is the Director of Academic Programmes and Research at the University of Gibraltar. After obtaining his PhD in Biological Oceanography from the University of Southampton In 1998, he moved to the Gibraltar National Museum in 1999 as Education and Research Officer, where he also read for a Masters Degree in Museum Studies from the University of Leicester (2004).

He was principal investigator on a number of EU and EFCHED funded projects, and received several international awards as part of the Museum team. He has published over 70 peer-reviewed articles in various international journals and book chapters both on ecological and archaeological subjects. As a qualified Scientific Diver he regularly carries out marine-related commissioned studies such as archaeological surveys and Environmental Impact Assessments. He is a director of the Gibraltar Museum’s Gibraltar Caves Project as well as member of the UNESCO WHS working group for the Gorham’s Cave Complex.

He has also acted as a consultant for the Gibraltar Government and for UNESCO on both heritage and natural-history matters, and has written several popular books and has been regularly consulted for international media articles and television documentaries, on subjects ranging from Neanderthals through marine life to the fortifications of the Rock.

Darren is a member of HMGoG’s Nature Conservancy Council, as well as a Registered European Commission Expert on Environment and Higher Education and Elected Fellow of the Linnaean Society of London. He is married with three daughters and somehow finds time to dive and play music when he can.

Graham David is the founder of Blue Beetle Productions Ltd, a professional training and coaching company he created in 1996 after he found a gap in the market for live case study and drama-centred learning.

He’s since become an award-winning speaker, presenter, trainer, actor and author who challenges his audiences to look deeper, think smarter and create better as a result.

Whether its leadership in management, HR skills, presentation and communications or customer service and sales, Graham has considerable experience in delivering events across many sectors from transport to travel, in both the public and private sector.

John has spent most of the last 2 decades working in the software industry, with a focus on web technologies.

After 10 years as a software engineer He moved into consultancy where He quickly learned the value of team dynamics and how most technical challenges are projecting underlying issues with collaboration. So his focus shifted, while still being very involved technically, his first focus is on facilitating a safe, creative, collaborative environment.

John’s approach is focused on helping organisations create an environment that fosters safety; facilitating creative collaboration. He is known for his infectious passion and sense of humour that brings in a much needed injection of energy to unmotivated, challenged teams.

After nearly 2 decades of work in the IT industry there isn’t much that He hasn’t put his hand to; working for both government and private sector clients in advertising, telecoms, recruitment, civil engineering, education, broadcast, gaming and mass transit.

He hosts and produces the well respected Agile Path podcast where John’s creates in-depth audio documentaries on the topics that most affect organisations transitioning to agile ways of working and other critical issues. The first season focuses on the effect of psychological safety (or the lack there of) on organisations and wider society. This has lead to many speaking engagements across the UK, US and Europe. He is the founder and Principal Consultant for Wise Noodles, where they believe in putting humanity at the centre of everything they do.

Susannah Simons is the Director of Partnerships for Marquee TV.

She began her career as a radio presenter with BBC Radio 4, presenting the PM programme for 10 years before moving to Channel 4 and Business Daily and finally Classic FM. It was during her 10 years at Classic FM that she became part of the senior management team whilst continuing her work as one of the station’s main presenters. In 2003 she returned to the BBC as Head of Policy and Outreach for BBC Radio and Music working on Charter renewal, the Burns review of BBC Radio and general policy issues. She was also responsible for developing the education work of the BBC’s Orchestras and the BBC Singers and for managing the Public Value Partnership with Arts Council England. In 2008 she joined the BBC team working on the BBC’s coverage of the London 2012 Olympics as Project Director for the Cultural Olympiad.

In 2014 she embarked on a new joint venture with Arts Council England with the formation of Canvas, a 3 year action research project designed to build the audience for the arts online and to develop the skills of the sector as they seek to engage with digital technologies.

A long-time champion of the importance of arts education she has served as a trustee of Youth Dance England, Artis and Orchestras for All. She continues to serve as a trustee of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, The PRSF for Music Foundation and One Dance UK. She is also much in demand as a conference chair, interviewer, key note speaker and facilitator.

Cecilia

Gyarmati Cecilia Gyarmati is a veteran in GWMF as she has been working for Gibraltar Productions since 2014, firstly as a volunteer, then as an ambassador and lately as a project manager for the BrightMed Talks.

She has Hungarian origins, however Cecilia left her motherland after her University degree to fulfil her lifelong passion to travel the world, learn languages, enjoy our multicultural globe and be a real cosmopolitan.

Her education is international and versatile, focusing mainly on languages, yoga and legal studies such as MA Hungarian law degree spiced up with law post-graduation in Brighton University, UK. Cecilia has been always enthusiastic for legal philosophy and human rights which drew her to work for Citizens Advice Bureau in Crawley during her time in the University.

Since her early twenties Cecilia hasbeen passionate about science of yoga which focuses on the self in relation to global community. It helps the individuals to join the universal consciousness. Both yoga and human rights educate the society how to accept yourself and each other, cooperate and create a worldwide peaceful human unity. “Conviviencia” in daily life.

Her main priority in GWMF is the BrightMed International Seminar.

The Greatest Street Party

rightMed 6th annual celebration of community spirit features live bands, school choirs, dance academies, brass bands, circus performances, arts, crafts, and food that attracts over 6,000+ visitors from Gibraltar and around! This is Gibraltar’s Greatest street party!

Located in the colorful and vibrant community of Irish Town- shops and restaurants along will come alive with community spirit, giving you a place to dive into and explore! The Greatest Street Party is Gibraltar’s biggest street party, transforming Irish Town and John Mackintosh Square into a heady extravaganza of sounds, smells and sights for one huge day of festivities.

The Party also features special curated line-ups. Diwan Saz will be the performing on the stage as the main artist. The Diwan Saz ensemble collects the sparks of traditional music from the past and transcribes it into sacred contemporary music. They believe in the power of music which can provoke a feeling of healing and liberation.

The Jambá Brass Band will start the Party, followed by an afternoon packed with music across different stages, while the pavement is packed with stalls. Jambá is a band that uses trumpets, saxophones, trombones, tuba and percussiones to brighten up the streets, events, parades and, in short, partis of all kinds through a chosen repertoire of internationally

known songs and their own compositions.

John Mackintosh Square will be transformed in a circus with the performances of Cia Volans. This is a contemporary circus company born in Córdoba as a result of the joint work of interdisciplinary artists of the Andalusian scene. The line of its work includes circus, dance and theater, resulting in new languages and forms of expression where movement and air take the leading role. There will be elegant and aesthetic aerial dancers, balancing on stilts, fusion of dance and balances taking the body to its extreme flexibility and visual luminous dance that unites juggling and acrobatics.

Each of the participating restaurants will provide a taste-test of their featured Menu.

The event officially starts at 19.00. Get down early to catch music all the afternoon across the different official street stages and at John Mackintosh Square main street.

John Mackintosh

John Mackintosh Square, more commonly known as The Piazza has been the centre of city life since the 14th century and takes its name from John Mackintosh, a local philanthropist. Originally known during the Spanish period as Plaza Mayor (Main Square) or Gran Plaza (Great Square) and afterwards as the Alameda (Spanish for an avenue lined with poplars, opened out from the west of Main Street. In the mid19th century the name of the square was changed to Commercial Square, being the site of a daily flea market and regular public auctions, as a result of which a Spanish name, Plazuela del Martillo, or more colloquially, El Martillo, was coined (“martillo” being the Spanish word for a gavel). Another popular name at the time was Jews’ Market. These appellations fell out of usage and the square is typically referred to as ‘The Piazza’, an Italian name created following the construction of a paved area in the centre of the square, probably introduced by Gibraltar’s Genoese settlers. The name ‘John Mackintosh Square’ was officially adopted in 1940.

n The street originates from 1462 when it was the Calle de Santa Ana n Today it has become a gastronomic centre with its cafes and restaurants The cloister of this Convent was alongside the church, and two of its original 16th century columns can still be seen on the north wall of Corks wine bar and restaurant. They indicate the width of the original patio in the cloister.

n the period when Gibraltar was Spanish, from 1462 to 1704, the street was known as the Calle de Santa Ana. An image of St Anne was venerated in a chapel at the southern end of the street, which was enlarged as from 1581 and became a Convent. The religious house was known as the Convento de la Merced as the friars belonged to the Mercederian Order. The Convent church and its belfry stood at the corner of Irish Town and Market Lane. Indeed, the building that stands there today is known as Cloister Building.

There was a second convent on the Calle de Santa Ana. It was for nuns of the Order of Poor Clares, and was founded in 1587. This was the Convento de Santa Clara. The convent church and building faced a small square off Main Street, which was built upon in later years. Today, the Sacarello Coffee Shop, winery and restaurant is located in what was once a large part of the nuns’ garden.

As the civilian population grew, and as commerce in Gibraltar began to develop, this began to change. A nucleus of Portuguese people lived in what is today Crutchett’s Ramp, but was previously called Portuguese Town. Similarly, a number of Irish people took up residence in the street close to the sea wall. As a result, it became known as Irish Town. But who were these Irish?

The most likely contenders were two large shiploads of Irish women immigrants who arrived in Gibraltar in late 1727/ early 1728. They were sent out to provide female company for the troops in Gibraltar, who were bored and resorted to drink, which was bad for discipline. Irish Town then became a street of ill repute.

The location of the street, close to the port, made it particularly attractive for commerce, and so the street was soon taken over by the merchant class. The Irish women became a distant memory, but the name ‘Irish Town’ stuck.

The final years of the 18th century and the first two decades of the 19th century saw the commencement of Gibraltar’s commercial heyday. The policy of Napoleon of trying to strangle the British economy by closing off ports in Western Europe to British exports placed Gibraltar in the commercial limelight. Gibraltar was a major port that was open to receive British goods for re-export into Europe and to North Africa.

The value of British goods that flowed through the warehouses in Irish Town was immense.

It was time to rebuild and repave the street after the ravages of the Great Siege. Its location next to the cooperage and with easy access to the port made it a key commercial street.

Many fine houses on the street date from the 19th century. The design of the Gibraltar merchant house with its Geor-

gian sash windows and Genoese-style louvered wooden shutters and underground tank for storing rainwater is generally attributed to Milanese- born architect John Maria Boschetti, who lived and worked in Gibraltar for most of his life.

Irish Town became the home in the 19th century for a number of ship owners and managers, shipping agents and ship chandlers. The oldest of these were M.H.Bland, at the corner of Market Lane, established in 1810; and Turner’s, established in 1831, and with offices at No 65/67.

The most significant public building on Irish Town is the former Victorian police station.

It was designed by Walter Eliott, the official Civil Engineer of Gibraltar at the time, in the then-fashionable neo-Gothic style. Red brick was combined with Maltese limestone. The station incorporated a senior police officer’s residence, which faced onto Cloister Ramp. The Police Station was inaugurated on 7 July 1864. It was the headquarters of the police, now the Royal Gibraltar Police, until 1984.

The bustling commercial Irish Town, in the early 20th century, included tobacco factories, coffee roasting works, a music hall which incorporated Gibraltar’s first cinema, and many shipping offices. The street was paved with wooden cobbles.

It was a noisy and dusty place. In addition to its traditional activities and its many shops, the street embraced a new leisure and gastronomic character. The bars that had catered to a primarily naval and military clientele, at a time when Gibraltar was a key military facility, now catered for a new type of more discerning customer.

New bars and restaurants were established.

Today it has become a gastronomic centre with its cafes, pubs and restaurants offering a variety of cuisine, complemented by fine shops. It is a hub for wining and dining including al fresco. Echoes nevertheless remain, for those who look closely, of the history of the street that spans over 500 years.

GWMF Concerts

n The renowned World Music artist Goran Bregović will star in the concerts at St. Michael’s Cave n Diwan Saz collects the sparks of traditional music and transcribes it into sacred contemporary music

G

ibraltar World Music Festival will remain the music part of the BrightMed events. The renowned World Music artist from the Balkans: Goran Bregović (along with 20 other performers from Serbia, Bosnia, Bulgaria, etc) and performing his deep and spiritual music: Diwan Saz (from Israel, Palestine, Iran, Turkey and Syria) will star in the concerts.

Goran Bregovic has done it all. A rock star in the former Yugoslavia, he went on to write film scores and ride the fashion for brassy Balkan Gypsy music, selling over 6m albums and collaborating with everyone from Iggy Pop to the Gipsy Kings.

Anyone who has experienced a concert by the Balkan virtuoso knows that they are triumphant affairs; expressing a love of music that is utterly infectious. A dedicated explorer of musical cultures, this composer, bandleader, singer and musician is nothing if not eclectic. His Wedding & Funeral Band combines brass, percussion and lively Bulgarian vocals for a euphoric, uplifting sound.

Goran Bregovic describes himself simply as a contemporary composer. Why then does his “contemporary” sound different from music of other contemporary composers? Because Goran is from the Balkans.

And in the Balkans “contemporary” is different.

What does his orchestra for Weddings and Funerals (composed of a gypsy brass band, traditional Bulgarian polyphonies, an electric guitar, traditional percussion, strings and Orthodox Church male singers) read on Bregovics score sheets? Echoes from Jewish and Gypsy weddings, chants from Orthodox and Catholic Church, Muslim invocations. His music comes from that terrible frontier where for centuries Catholics, Orthodox Christians and Muslims made war and lived together. One of the best examples for CHAOS.

Michael’s Cave

St Michael’s Cave was long believed to be bottomless. This probably gave birth to the story that the Rock of Gibraltar was linked to the Africa by a subterranean passage under the Strait of Gibraltar. The famous macaques were said to have come to Gibraltar through this subterranean passage.

Pomponious Mela, one of the earliest geographers who lived about the beginning of the Christian era, spoke about the cave in his writings. It has been in use as a theatre since the early sixties with capacity for 600 persons. At some period during the history of this cave, part of a stalagmite became too heavy on one side and fell, possibly thousands of years ago.

He has toured almost nonstop for over 20 years now, with “120 shows last year – sometimes more”. In the process he has become the world’s bestknown exponent of Balkan Gypsy music.

Prior to his performance, Diwan Saz will take the stage. The Diwan Saz ensemble collects the sparks of traditional music from the past and transcribes it into sacred contemporary music. They believe in the power of music which can provoke a feeling of healing and liberation. In the past 8 years Diwan Saz has performed in many festivals around the world in front of a diverse audience. From New York to India, from a mosque to a synagogue, they were fascinated by the ability of their music to create a dialogue and rise above any controversy or politics.

Meet...

- BrightMed is proud of having you in its Festival. What does Gibraltar mean to you?

- I’m really looking forward to play in Gibraltar. Gibraltar is the bridge between two continents, two civilizations, so It always played an important role in history. I have beautiful memories from Gibraltar because on the time I was sailing the Atlantic Ocean. I spent two or three weeks in Gibraltar to prepare my sailing boat.

- We are very much favouring intercultural exchanges and interfaith. You have mastered these concepts across the years combining various countries in your band. How did you manage it despite all criticisms and narrowness we are still sadly facing in our world?

- I am from Sarajevo and It’s on the borderline for centuries between Orthodox, Catholics and Muslims. As a composer I was born in a Frankestein of influences and my music has been always a bit Frankestein I just hope that my Frankestein music is handsome. Of course, in my music you will find Orthodox singings, you will find traces of Jewish music, of Muslim writtens and Catholic harmonies...

This is what I bring as a composer in my music. Putting together these things is easy for a composer, it is very difficult for politics and religions. A composer can easly imagine one World as a musical partiture where low notes go well with high notes, the short notes go well with the long notes, fortissimo goes well with pianissimo... I’m running all around the World knowing that big good things in history of humankind came from Utopies.

- You seem to envisage another Opus for the Three letters of Sarajevo. Would you tell us more about it? The christian, Jewish and Muslim cooperation is a reality in Gibraltar and we call it: Convivencia. Will this be still reflected in your Opus II? - I was commissioned by Basilique Saint-Denis in Paris to write Violin concerts for National Symphony Orchestra and I started from one littlle story that I found on internet.

It said that one reporter of CNN heard about one old jew that for years comes to pray in front of the Wailing Wall and she decided to make a report about him in Jeru-

¡¡¡First, enjoy the miracle!!! salem. He was praying and when he finishes she approches the jew and says: “You are already here for years talking to God in front of the Wall”. The old jew says “Yes, sixty years already everyday in front of the Wailling Wall”. And reporter replies “And what do you talk with God?”. And the old jew replies “I’m talking to God about that those wars between Jews, Christians and Muslims have to stop one day and that our kids could live in peace”. The reporter said “And?”. And the old jew said “I have the impression that I’m talking to a wall”. So if there is something to be learnt from this little story is that obviously God in his schedule didn’t put to teach us how to live together; this is something we have to learn by ourselfes. Three letters from Sarajevo is about that. I’m from Sarajevo and for me is like a metaphore: it’s the metaphore of our times. What we saw in Sarajevo in 1991 is what we see nowadays: Sunday we can be good neighbours and Monday we shoot one to another just because we are from diffferent religions.

Another metaphore for me that makes music is my first instrument, which is violin, because violin is played in three different manners: Christian manner, how we play classical mussic; Klezmer, how Jews play which is a high different technique; and Oriental, how Muslims play on Orient.

So my violin concert is written actually for three violinists that come from these three traditions and this is what I will play in Gibraltar.

The record is in two parts because in the meantime I wrote some songs for some of my favourites Christian, Jewish and Muslim artists. So I will play songs from Opus I, from the first record, and Opus II will be released at the end of the year. I hope you will have fun.

- You are a renown film composer. Can we expect to enjoy this part of your talent again in the near future?

- I am from a very small musical culture. You can buy the biggest book about the History of Music and you are not going t o find a n -

ybody from us. So it’s just an incredible miracle what happened to me that I have audiences all around the world. What I’m trying at this moment is first to enjoy this miracle that happened to me and at the same time leave behind me some decent music.

- Our dream is to hear you screaming the word G I B R A LTA R louder than Kalachnikov, will you fulfil this dream?

- I wrote Kalachnikov about the guys in my country that like to carry the arms. So it’s the opposite to addressiness. And of course it will be joyable for Gibraltar because I had such beatiful memories from Gibraltar.

Meet... DIWAN SAZ

Yochai Barak Yochai was the founder and creator of Diwan Saz. Studying and traveling throughout Europe, Israel, Turkey and India, Yochai has learned from and performed with noted musicians like Ross Daly, Kelly Thoma, Kutla Khan and Mehmed Erenler. Yohai has transformed Diwan Saz from a small group of students and friends, into one of the most gifted ensembles representing the music of the Middle and Near East. Diwan Saz is a shining example of how cultures and peoples of all regions can unite in the dialog of music.

The Band Eyal received his first musical inspiration from his grandfather who was a famed pianist in the Czech Republic.

He began his musical journey as a jazz and rock drummer, than became interested in the world of Middle Eastern Music and Percussion and started playing the darbuka, daf, and rik. He studied Indian Tabla with Einav Baraam and with Steven Fine,with the legendary Israeli percussionist Zohar Fresco.

Eyal Luman A multi-instrumentalist, producer, and musical explorer, Udi was well-educated in Classical Western Music and Eastern Music. Born in the Negev city of Beer Sheva, Udi began playing guitar at the age of 15 and was patrt of the legendary Israeli world music group, “Sheva.”

Udi studied the Varnasi Sitar Traditiion in India with Govinda Go Swami. In Greece, he studied saz, lira, and Afghan Rabbab with Ross Daly. His special love of Turkish and Greek Music is uniquely combined with his ability to fuse traditional and modern music together.

Udi Ben Knaan Rani grew up in a musical family and began performing all over Israel as a bass player at the age of fifteen in his father’s band. He spent a year in South Africa studying the music of the continent and recorded an album dedicated to African Music. In 2004, Rani toured the World with the group “Sheva” and in 2011, toured India as part of the initiative of the Indian and Israeli Embassies. Rani has performed and recorded with dozens of Israeli artists including Dayan Kaplan and Mark Eliyahu.

Rani Lorentz Tzipporah studied several singing styles at the “Academy of Eastern Music” in Jerusalem. Now focusing on Turkish singing of the Sufi-Baktashi stream. Tzipporah sings with several ensembles including Ladino, Greek Rembetiko, and Traditional Turkish Music. Tzipporah lives in the Judean Desert where she is raising two children and where she receives much of her inspiration.

1. You have experienced a lot the concept of nomadism which led you to diversity in your life and in music. Would you share with us the main philosophy you gathered during your journey?

The main philosophy I gathered during my journey’s is that each tribe, each area and each country has its own magic and the magic is what connects everybody together.

When I speak about magic I speak about what music can be in the higher level, I call it - medicine.

This kind of music can open the heart, can open your mind to things beyond you and bring you joy and happiness.

There are two types of music, music that comes from the heart and music that comes from knowledge - the best in the combination between them. Through my journey many of them for long months with horses and camels in the wild nature I have found that music of the heart belongs to the nomads, I was also seeking music that comes from knowledge which is more around the city, so I’ve studied sometimes in big cities like Istanbul and then with that knowledge I continued my travels in the high mountains and in the deserts of central Asia. in the ancient Hebrew scripts they say that music has more power than the words itself - the way you sing the prayer is more powerful than what you actually say, when I hear music even if it’s not the type of music I play or “like” I can appreciate good music from all around the spectrum of the music styles, meaning I appreciate the magic of whoever plays music from the heart and with the right knowledge - he actually plays my own music, this is what I’ve been looking for and doing - during my journeys I have found a lot of it.

The atmosphere and the way you are when you travel for a long time opens your heart and makes you feel very lucky to meet different people different cultures different languages and food - all this comes inside the music of the place you are at, and creates the right atmosphere to learn and to play music. The same as I referred to music I also can refer to human beings - it doesn’t matter what religion you are from - if you have a good heart and good intentions so we are from the “same” religion. This is what we try with our group to reflect through our music 2. How and why Diwan Saz? What messages does it transports and what would you like to tell the people of Gibraltar who might not be familiar with your music and the instruments used?

Diwan Saz has started through a group of my students, we used to meet for many years and just play music for the sake of playing music…

After sometime friends of mine, professional musicians has joined us and eventually diwansaz has become what it is today, Diwan means a gathering, people who sit together. It could be in anyway, for music, for a conversation, for consulting or for having a good time…

Saz means instrument so Diwan Saz is a gathering of musical as well as a gathering of different people different, religions with a dialogue through the music.

Diwan Saz has gathered musicians from different religions in the holy land and from all over the world in a different project and still today we have people from the Jewish, Muslim and Christian Religions, and we play music from different cultures: Hebrew, Arabic, Bedouin, Turkish, Persian, Kurdish and more.

We play ancient instruments (Persian flute, different string instruments from central Asia and bow instruments from Crete; and our music is of ancient music combined with the music of our days, The melodies are original , and also ancient melodies as well with many original improvisation throughout the whole concert .

We have a great rabbi who sings in Arabic and an amazing Christian vocalist who also sings in Arabic, a musician and singer from Iran, etc… all this diversity reflects the true power and medicine of music ,the dialogue through music on stage and with the audience.

3. You have incredibly achieved the harmony and the spirituality that Brightened is constantly looking for. How do we reach such a level out of the chaos you could have been trapped in?

I believe the answer and the solution is in finding the center , all around us are different notes (different music ,styles ,religions ,cultures… different thoughts different countries … ) all can be seen without having a center as total chaos, but if we concentrate on the player - the one who plays the music , concentrate in oneself and seeing all the different notes - seeing how much color each note has and bringing each note to the right place around the center and in the center - a great and powerful masterpiece is born.

1. BrightMed’s aim is to bridge souls and lands and music has always been the onlye language BrightMed uses. You also believe the power of music for the same purpose. Would you give us some examples of bridges you achieved in your rich musical career?

I attend many interfaith meetings. As a Rabbi I meet religion leaders from different cultures. the meetings I had with Muslim sheikhs very meaningful for me. When I sing with Muslims in Arabic I really see the connections between us.

2. You have managed to find the balance when it comes to your origins, your religious education, your attachement to your land and the music.

Would you be able to open our eyes on the fact that singing in a band and particularly with the presence of women is totally compatible with Jewish rules?

I think its not prohibited to sing with a women. I will speak more about it during the festival 3. You are a unique symbol of peace and interfaith. You are renown for your interaction with muslims and sufis. You explained that our vision becomes distorted if we look at these exchanges from a strict political angle. Could you share with us the qualities it requires to succeed in intercultural exchanges?

I will answer with a short story: the king has send his slaves to build him a castle. Each slave built a different part. At the end there is a great castle.

This is how God sends to earth different kind of people and we all together need to build “God’s castle”.

Lubna Salameh Born and raised in Haifa, Lubna demonstrated her singing abilities at a young age, performing in school and various vocal competitions. In 1997, Lubna joined the prestigious “Arabic Orchestra of Nazareth” as a lead singer. She has performed internationally in Europe, America, Jordan, Morocco and Palestine.

Rabbi David Menachem Rabbi David Menachem is a musician and composer. Born in 1980, he grew up in the old neighborhoods of Jerusalem among cantors and Kabbalists. From a young age he has performed with Iraqi musicians from The Israel Broadcasting Authority (IBA) and the Arabic Orchestra. Performing in concerts and festivals both in Israel and abroad, Rabbi Menachem plays an active role in the revival of the world of Jewish Middle-Eastern music, and more than that he plays an important role in promoting peace in the middle east especially by gathering religious leaders from the area, promoting peace together.

1. Your magical voice and talent transports the sounds of the Middle East to our ears. What is your favorite repertoire and how would you define your contribution to Diwan Saz? From the musical aspect I mostly connected to the Arabic classical style. I also sing folk and different kind of music. Diwan saz is different type of music but it makes my music whole. It opened to me doors to different kind of music I didn’t know existed.

2. You have a tremendous courage to achieve what culture is all about. You are singing with Jews, Muslims and Christians. BrightMed Festival and Gibraltar is a strong advocate for interfaith and cultural exchanges, how do you manage to be successful in these exchanges? What lesson should we take from you?

I’m not a politician, I’m a human being that loves music. Music doesn’t make a difference between religions. It comes from the heart and goes to the heart , I believe we can achieve a lot with music, to come closer to each other, to bring love and mutual respect. It can never be “stained” with politics 3. What would be your next dream projects?

I started to recorded a new CD. I would love to do more projects with Diwan Saz and create music that can really bring different people from different religions together.

1. Your magical voice and talent transports the sounds of the Middle East to our ears. What is your favorite repertoire and how would you define your contribution to Diwan Saz? I like all that is good, that is in good in quality and in high spiritual level. it doesn’t matter what kind of music; I can love from Japanese music to African music, from Western to Eastern... as long as it’s performed and played professionally and with the right understanding of music in general. I feel part of DiwanSaz from music to friendship and I really enjoy being with the group all the time all over the world.

Especially I feel connected and love folk music and the group it’s definitely inspired and come from the roots of Folk Music. most of the instruments are picking or bow instruments and I bring the wind the flute with long notes which combines very magically throughout the music of the group.

I can answer this question with one word: Culture! Culture, religion, different ways and different mentalities in music becomes one, in music there are no differences no different ways different religions in music-- all becomes one. When we sit different people together and they play music it doesn’t matter from which country culture or religion we come from - all is one. We all get the same inspiration, same quality, we become above religion.

There are no differences in the color of the skin. People just become one in a higher level. This is all with the help and the quality of music that makes us all together as a whole 3. What would be your next dream projects?

I would love to make a project where I am as free as possible to play and sing, without nothing closing me, no Style or type of music or type of people or culture or religion that can bother me to be free in music , I would like to be able not to let anything put around me boundaries, I would like to be free to play whatever comes naturally through the spirit

Amir was born in Rashet, Iran in 1964. He was born into a musical family. Amir studied the classical flute called ney. In spite of his family’s disapproval of him becoming a musician Amir went on to study traditional, classical singing. Amir arrived in Israel in 1989. A master of Iranian traditional singing and of the ney.

During the last 17 years he has played live and recorded with the best artists in Israel as well as guest artists from out of the country. He has accompanied Omar Faruk, Ross Dally, Micaelis Nicoladis, Jivan Gasparyen, and Yasmin Levy.
