INDIA AND THE CANARY ISLANDS

Holi Festival and Los Indianos from La Palma

❖ These are two famous festivals, Holi festivals and Los Indianos of La Palma festival. Holi festival you sully celebrate in march, all over India in many different places such as, Punjab and Delhi, whereas the festival of Los Indianos is only celebrated in Santa Cruz de La Palma, in February.

❖ The Holi festival is full of colourful, bright and beautiful colours, in contrast Los Indianos is everything white, white clothes, white powder…. If we carefully watch, we can see that all the Hindu people are wearing old and unimportant clothes during Holi festival because there are going to get very dirty, conversely the people in Los Indianos are wearing elegant white clothes because they are representing the rich people who went to Cuba in the 19th century.

❖ The festival of Los Indianos is importantly celebrated because is designed as a tribute to the island relationship with Cuba,on the contrary during amazing Holi festival people joyfully throw colour powder because it represents the goodness over evil and the beginning of the spring, as a flower beautifully growing.

Threadfin Butterfly fish and Vieja

❖ These are two amazing animals, both are fish. One is the Threadfin Butterfly fish that care lives in the Indic Ocean, and the other is the Vieja, a majestical fish from the Central America and Mexico, commonly found in the Canary Islands.

❖ The two of them, are quite small, the Vieja is up to 17-35cm long, whereas the Threadfin Butterfly fish is up to 23cm long. Vieja’s males have a grey and green colour, while females are grey, red and yellow, nevertheless, the Threadfin Butterfly fish changes its colour at night. The Threadfin Butterfly fish has black long and thin stripes, however, the Vieja doesn’t. Threadfin Butterfly fish has black eyes, as dark as coal, in contrast, Vieja has yellow eyes, as yellow as lemon. The Vieja has three sharp fins as sharp as scissors, in the same way Threadfin Butterfly fish has two enormous fins.

❖ The Threadfin Butterfly fish slowly swims at 1-35 meters deep, on the contrary the Vieja happily swims at 1-50 meters deep. These are two beautiful flowers, different but amazing in their own way. The Bird of Paradise flower is typical from the Canary Islands whereas the lotus flower is typical from India.

The lotus flower is as pink as the pink panther, just like some parts of the Bird of Paradise flower. The Bird of Paradise flower has a petal as yellow as the sun, also the lotus flower has a lot of tiny yellow filaments. The lotus flower is completely pink, yet the Bird of Paradise flower is colourfully full of orange petals.

The stem of the lotus flower can measure up to 1 metre long, just like the Bird of Paradise, however the stem of the lotus flower is under the water so it can’t be seen. The bird of Paradise flower lives on land, on the contrary the lotus flower lives in water, but both are beautifully decorating nature.

The Giant Lizard and The Himalayan Newt

These two curious animals are the Giant lizard and the Himalayan newt. The Giant lizard is a reptile, whereas the Himalayan newt is an amphibian. They both have four legs . The Giant lizard has a colossal tail , just like the Himalayan newt . The Himalayan newt can be found near water, nevertheless the Giant lizard can be found in rocky areas of El Hierro.

The Giant lizard is as grey as metal, on the contrary the Himalayan newt has a very dark skin with light orange legs and a tail as orange as a mandarin. The Giant lizard is very strong, conversely the Himalayan newt is more agile. The Himalayan newt has humongous eyes, however the Giant lizard has teeny tiny eyes. The Giant lizard has an enormous head, yet the Himalayan newt has a small one.

❖ The Giant lizard carefully eat plants and food ,in contrast the Himalayan newt hungrily eat crickets and worms . The Himalayan newt quickly runs nevertheless the Giant lizard doesn’t run that fast.

Indian Sitar and Canarian Timple

❖ These two instruments are alike, one of them is called Sitar and it is from India and the other one is the Timple , it is from the Canary Islands.

❖ These instruments are both made of wood and they are both stringed instruments, however the Sitar has 7 strings, nevertheless the Timple has only 5 strings.The colours are pretty different, the Timple is light brown and black ,yet the Sitar is dark brown like the dirt. The Sitar is long whereas the Timple is not as long, it is shorter. Both of them delightfully produce a beautiful sound.

❖ The Timple is a distant relative of the Hawaiian ukelele, in contrast the Sitar is a stringed instrument from the lute family that is popular in northern India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. The Sitar is beautifully plucked to create music called Carnatic, yet the Timple is carefully played to create Isas. The Isas are as delightful as being with your family.

Ropa Vieja and Butter Chicken Curry

❖ These are two extraordinary dishes, one from the Canary Island and the other from India. They are called Ropa Vieja and Butter Chicken Curry. They are beautifully cooked and both smell delicious and exotic.

❖ The Ropa Vieja looks as tasty as a cake, however the Butter Chicken Curry is as spicy as pepper. They both have meat but one is made with pork and the other with chicken. To cook the Ropa Vieja we need one onion and a half a pepper. We also need an onion for the Butter Chicken, in contrast Butter Chicken Curry needs aromatic golden chicken pieces in an incredible curry sauce, both are extremely delicious.

❖ The butter chicken curry is served with a naan, on contrary the Ropa Vieja isn’t served with any bread. Sometimes the Butter chicken curry is spicy and sometimes it isn’t, however Ropa Vieja doesn’t change its flavour.

❖ These are two typical lovely birds from two different places, one from India and the other from the Canary Islands. The peacock is from India however the Blue Chaffinch is from the Canary Islands. Both are extremely cute birds in their own way.

❖ Both birds are as blue as the sky. The peacock has a green tail like grass with many eyes on it, whereas the Blue Chaffinch has a small blue tail. The peacock gracefully and loudly walks and shows its beautiful tail, in contrast the Blue Chaffinch is quietly sings by itself. The peacock has a very pointy beak just like the Blue Chaffinch. The Blue Chaffinch has little blue eyes, on the contrary the peacock has giant brown eyes.

❖ The peacock can fly but only 80-100 meters, conversely the Blue Chaffinch can fly a long distance. The female Blue Chaffinch is grey, similarly the female peacock has a brownish colour. The Blue Chaffinch is 16-18 cm in length, yet the peacock is 100-115 cm in length.

These are the typical clothes in India and in Canary Islands for man.A Famous type of clothes in India are the Kurta and the dhoti, whereas in the Canary Islands they wear something very different, a shirt whit a long jacket they also wear a short trouser and two enormous boots, they are called ‘magos’.

The kurta is a long shirt, the dhoti is a baggy and heavy trouser and they also wear little beige shoes, whereas in Canary Islands they commonly dress with a black jacket a grey and black shirt. They also wear a short trousers as brown as a bear, they wear a white trouser under the brown one and they have black and brown boots finally they gracefully wear one brown hat.

In the Canary Islands their clothes are made of taffeta and serge sometimes in combination with linen or cotton, however in India the clothing is made of cotton and silk.

❖ These are two beautiful dresses. One is typical from India and the other one is typical from the Canary Islands. Both are unique in their own way.

❖ In these photos both dresses are red, however we know that saris come in many different colours, also they both have an enormous skirt. The typical canary clothes includes a hat, in contrast the Indian sari doesn’t. The Indian sari has beautiful golden sewed details. The canary dress has a yellow jacket, as yellow as the sun, whereas the Indian sari doesn’t have a jacket. The Indian woman is wearing humongous earrings, as enormous as an elephant, unlike the canary woman, she also wears earrings, yet they are smaller. The Canary dress includes different colours, as colourful as the rainbow, in contrast the Indian sari is as bright as the light, yet it normally only has one or two colours.

❖ Indian girls use the sari when they are brides, in festivals, and other religious ceremonies, whereas the Canarian people use the typical dress for the Canary day festivities. The Canary dresses are different depending on the city or island you go to, whereas the saris can be many different colours, but it just depends on the colour you like, and not on the place.

Indian Tuk-Tuk and Radio Taxi La laguna

❖ The Tuk-Tuk and Radio Taxi are two types of public transport that transport you from one place to another.

❖ The Indian Tuk-Tuk has three wheels, however the Radio Taxi of La laguna has four. The Tuk-Tuk doesn’t have any doors and it is easy to go inside whereas the Radio Taxi is completely closed and it is better for your protection. The Tuk-Tuk has bright colors, yellow on the top, and green like grass or blue like the sky on the bottom. On the contrary, the Radio Taxi is as white as snow.

❖ In the Tuk-Tuk 6 people can travel at a time, in contrast in the Radio Taxi only 4 people can travel at the same time. The Tuk-Tuk only moves you in the city like Mumbai for example, on the contrary the Radio Taxi of La laguna can move you from one city to another.

Drago Tree and Banyan Tree

❖ These are two beautiful trees named Drago tree that is from Spain, and the Banyan tree that is from India. And they both are special in their own way.

❖ The Drago tree is a fat tree with a humongous scaly trunk. The Drago tree has thin succulent branches as skinny as a skeleton, in contrast in the Banyan tree you can’t see the branches. The trunk of the Banyan tree is wider, nevertheless the Drago tree is thinner. The banyan tree is greener that the Drago tree. However the Banyan tree has massive vines, as massive as an elephant, conversely in the Drago tree we don’t see any vines.

Finally the Banyan tree is taller than the Drago tree. Did you know that the Banyan tree is 30 metres tall, yet the Drago tree is 20-21 metres tall.

An Indian Train and The Tram in Tenerife

These are two famous sports, Cricket and Bola Canaria. Both games are fun in their own way. Cricket was happily invented in England in the 16th century, people in India started playing around 1721, nevertheless Canarian bowls was invented in the 15th century. And probably evolved from similar games played in Spain and France to beautiful places as beautiful as a baby.

On the Teide there is a cable car, so you can visit the top of the volcano, however the Kanchenjunga doesn’t. The Teide is only one mountain standing alone, nevertheless the Kanchenjunga is part of a long mountain range, called the Himalayas.

These are two beautiful buildings, one is located in India, however the other one is located in Tenerife. They are both religious buildings, yet they are both very different, and they are called Sri Ramakrishna Math Chennai and the Cathedral of La Laguna .

The Cathedral of La Laguna is painted with warm colours on the inside, however the other one is painted with cold colors. In Sri Ramakrishna Math Chennai, there are four columns in the front, just like the one in Tenerife. The Sri Ramakrishna Math Chennai is brighter than the cathedral, the cathedral is darker than the Indian building. The Virgin of Candelaria and The Indian Goddess Durga

These are the Virgin of Candelaria and the Indian goddess Durga. Durga is the goddess of destruction, destroying man and the world around her, whereas the Virgin of Candelaria represents the culmination of the Catholic purification cycle.

The Virgin has dark skin, however Durga has pale skin, as pale as a ghost.They both have a gold crown, and they similarly have something in their hands. Durga has eight arms, on the contrary, the Virgin of Candelaria only has two arms. The Virgin of Candelaria carries her baby, nevertheless, Durga is on a tiger. Durga has red clothes as red as blood just like the Virgin of Candelaria, and they also both have white details on their clothes.

The name of the Virgin of Candelaria comes from the act of blessing candles, whereas the name of Durga means ‘impassable’ ‘invincible’ and ‘unassailable’. Approximately 2.5 million visitors come every year to visit the statue of the Virgin of Candelaria, conversely, around one million people come to visit Durga every year.
