Los Renombrados recognizes 21 senior recipients

Newspaper, yearbook place as LA Press Club finalists BY TIFFANY NGUYGEN

BY KIMBERLY QUIOCHO

The Los Renombrados ceremony acknowledged the outstanding academic and extracurricular achievements of its senior recipients on April 27 in the Matador Arena. This award has honored students annually since the school’s founding in 1955. Out of several applicants, 21 students were recognized during the assembly. The 2019 Los Renombrados finalists include the following students: Martin Costorena, Jacqueline Chi, Monse Enciso, David Gomez, Diana Guardado, Selina Han, Nicole Hernandez, Shawn Ho, Vanessa Hoang, Sonam Huang, Carmen Liang, Alejandra Lopez, Angela Lu, Cynthia Ly, Esmeralda Merino-Zarate, Sophia Ngo, Brian Nguyen, Eileen Ong, Jordan Phan, Jessica Villanueva, and Wendy Zamora. Senior Nicole Hernandez said she felt that she deserved the award. She was happy to know that her teachers noticed her initiative and drive in both her classroom and extracurricular activities. “It feels really good to be acknowledged,” Hernandez said. “Because that way I know someone else has seen my achievement other than myself. I acknowledge my own achievements, but when it comes from somebody else [it feels like] I actually made it.” Students who qualified for Los Renombrados were recommended by their teachers. Nominated seniors filled out an application and explained why they deserve the award. There are many applicants, but only a select few made the cut as finalists. Senior Shawn Ho’s experience with the application process let him reminisce his high school life.

Robotics builds environmental robot, wins at competition BY JOCELYN MONTELON

Team Randolph of San Gabriel’s robotics team competed at the annual Viterbi Robotics Competition, and placed third for academic display and first in spirited team. The competition was held at the University of Southern California. Team Randolph was made up of six students: juniors Kai Alcayde, Kevin Lam, Bryan Leao, Jenny Lee, Jocelyn Montelon, and sophomore Kevin Almontes. The team was judged on innovative design, spiritedness (the process of working with the robot and their team as well as with others), oral presentation, and academic display board. The team had to build a robot, processing center, and the sequestration station. The team also had to produce a display board of their work. This year’s competition was based on global warming, and the team had to use their robot to collect ping pong balls, which represented

carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, and try to put them into a collector. “The competition was challenging,” junior Kevin Lam said. “Challenging because of the new objectives the robotics competitions change [every year].” Given only two weeks to build a new robot and collectors, the team struggled on how they would code the robot to best fit the specific field and regulations. They started off with a design with a claw that was too heavy and would not allow the robot to move through the field with ease. The claw would also make the robot to flip when it moved too fast. “The claw was a problem because our initial design was very unstable and it wasn’t well-suited for picking up ping pong balls,” Lam said. “But as a collective group we decided that we would settle on an alternate claw.” Although the competition was challenging, the team was able to design a robot that best fit the competition objectives and satisfy all the rule requirements. They had many meet-ups where they discussed the competition and test ran the robot on a practice field. “[The display board] had [to have] a lot

on college applications, I chose to answer them differently,” Ho said. “I feel like the topics I wrote about were more important than my PIQs.”

In seven categories, the El Camino Real yearbook and The Matador newspaper staffs placed as finalists in the 61st Southern California Journalism Awards Contest (SCJAC) hosted by the LA Press Club (LAPC) Newspaper alumni Carlos Carrillo and Jennifer Cheung, and seniors Kenny Lam and Eileen Ong received finalist nominations in the Best High School Newspaper category. Yearbook’s junior Delane Ly and alumnus Leo Yue received finalist nominations in the Best News Photo category. Yearbook alumni Michelle Ho and William Kwoon also received finalist nominations in the Best Feature Photo category. Having submitted a photo of a female student holding a sign during the school walkout, Ly believes that it was the framing and emotional weight of the event that earned her the finalist spot. However, the photographer did not anticipate her nomination when she initially submitted her photo. “I never thought any of my photos were at par with the other photographers,” Ly said. “So when I found out, I was like, ‘woah’”. Yearbook and newspaper adviser Jennifer Kim is “thrilled” that her students will be advancing to the final competition on June 30. “They work so hard and are so dedicated— it’s awesome [that] they are being recognized for their work by the LAPC,” Kim said.

Industrial tech teacher John Mason’s woodshop class constructed bunk beds for Camp Ta Ta Pochon for the YMCA. Having visited the site, Mason immediately offered to help make improvements alongside Alhambra and Mark Keppel High School. In the beginning of the year, Career Technical Education teachers from the three high schools visited to find out what Camp Ta Ta Pochon needed the most. After learning that the camp needed bunk beds, Adirondack chairs and other items, the decision was made to construct bunk beds. Senior David Clemente recalls working on the project as a fun experience. “My favorite moment was when we were there throughout the entire day,” Clemente said. “Then the next day would be when we went up to the mountains and actually put them together for the kids.” Originally just a project for his after-school building and construction class, Mason later asked his first and second period classes for assistance.

Seniors Juan Aparicio (left) and David Clemente (right) construct bunk beds in John Mason’s woodshop class for children attending Camp Ta Ta Pochon.

“We needed [help with] painting and some sanding.” Mason said, “I reached out to ... mostly my second period class, because they are advanced woodwork.” With a close deadline, students were working overtime on the bunk beds, staying after school to complete the project. “We made 10 bunk beds and brought them up to Camp Ta Ta Pochon,” Mason said. “Alhambra

and Mark Keppel are supposed to make some, but we got ours done; they didn’t get theirs done.” Mason said he is extremely proud of all his students who dedicated time and effort to build the bunk beds and improve a child’s experience at Camp Ta Ta Pochon. This week, students from two middle schools in the Alhambra Unified School District will be attending the camp and staying in cabins with the new bunk beds.

The feminine hygiene product dispensers installed in the girls’ bathrooms on campus in November are currently not available for use. The sign on the dispensers say to go to the Health or Attendance Office to receive tokens, but at this time, neither offices have tokens. It is uncertain when they will be available as Nurse Louise Tsoi has not received any information regarding the status of the dispensers. “I think they are working on it,” Tsoi said. “At this point, I don’t have tokens yet, [but when they do arrive], students need to get the tokens from the Health or Attendance Office.” A district-wide advancement, other schools have been receiving their tokens in the past few weeks. This leads Tsoi to think San Gabriel will receive the tokens before the end of the school year, but a specific date remains unknown.

Bags of unwanted textiles and clothing, donated by students and staff, were loaded onto trucks provided by the Clothes for the Cause (CFTC) organization on May 10 at the South Parking Lot. The goal was to raise $500 for Medical Career Academy (MCA) and to unite the school community through a common cause. “I think it’s important to reach out and connect with people around you, and be more involved in your community,” sophomore Vicky Giang, the MCA vice president of fundraising, said. About 50 to 70 bags were donated in total. From 3 to 4 p.m., the MCA volunteers and workers from the CFTC organization were led by MCA advisers Kathleen Loggins and Alicia Canzano.

District installs new computers BY AARON LU

The Mac computers in the library were replaced on April 19 with new HP computers. The computers cost around $900 to $1000 each. “We purchase computers every year,” Ashton Potter, director of Technology and Information Services said. “The Board of Education made it a priority to purchase new technology for students; our goal is to get our District to a 1:1 [student to computer] ratio within the next two years.” The school received six new PC laptop carts with 36 units per cart (216 laptops), 108 desktops that are distributed between three computer labs, and an extra chrome cart with 36 units delivered in October.

“Lam”enting fear

Kenny Lam Walled in

M

y best friend in first grade moved away unexpectedly. As a clueless 6-year-old, I didn’t understand the impact of the event, but it hurt nonetheless. Then, near the end of elementary school, a close friend I hung out with almost everyday, moved to a different school. Our friendship drifted and quickly died. Since then, the closer friendships I’ve made have followed the same fate, living only momentarily in my memories. All of these fleeting friendships have unsurprisingly left a mark on me. Frightened by my pattern of abandonment, I began to construct walls of solitude to protect myself, focusing on finding happiness in confinement rather than in people. I would distance myself from blossoming friendships, decline invitations to hang out, and even push away my parents’ affection. I didn’t want any emotional attachments. Personal connections left me vulnerable—I never wanted to be hurt again. But I guess I never learn from the past. Recently, I’ve wanted to try again. I’ve slowly begun tearing down my walls of isolation, leaving myself victim to the predator of emotion. Opening myself up to my friends, putting more effort into maintaining a friendship—I want to again attempt to form genuine, meaningful connections with others. Yet, in the back of my head, the fear of abandonment still lingers, reminding me of the dangers of leaving myself vulnerable. “Does he even want to be my friend? When will this friendship end? Will I be left hurt and alone once again?” These thoughts of conflicting dread cloud my mind and silence me, forcing me back into the safety of my loneliness. I desire the comfort of seclusion, away from all the emotional attachments brought onto me by friendship and companionship. But is this the life I really want to live? Alone. No one to confide to or make memories with. Simply, alone. Perhaps solitude is for me. Perhaps it isn’t. I have plenty of time to figure that out. All I know is that, as I move on to the next four years of my life, I should at least try to break away from my patterns of isolation and create bonds with others. I should at least try to make myself happy. And if that means getting hurt in the process, so be it.

Letters from the editors T

hree years ago, I dreamt of being able to write a “Letter From the Editor” myself. But now that I have the chance to do so, I have trouble putting my thoughts into words. I think my brain has not yet processed that within two weeks, this chapter of my life will end. As a super cheesy and emotional person, I was surprised that I had trouble writing something sentimental because newspaper has given me so much. In the past three years, the staff has become my family and H2 has been my home. I can leave SG knowing that the countless hours spent at deadlines will continue and that the lights in H2 will never turn off. To my coeditors: I am so lucky to have had the chance to work alongside the two of you. To Ms. Kim: your undying passion for journalism inspires all of us. And to my staff: you guys are some of the brightest and most hardworking people I know. The Matador is nothing without you. Do not forget that! Selina Han 2018-19 Editor-in-Chief, Media

I

N

write this during one of our last deadlines, and as I scan this messy room in front of me, I cannot help but feel a little sad about the end of all this, of all the laughs, camaraderie, and collective suffering. H2 has become my home for the past three years, and it will be difficult leaving such an important part of me behind. To my staffers: I think we can all agree that this has been a very stressful, painful year. It has not been easy, but that is what makes the newspaper so rewarding. I am incredibly proud of all of you and the work we accomplished together. For my seniors, we are done! This is it, our final issue. I wish the best to you all going forward. For my first-years and underclassmen, it has been an honor watching every one of you grow up from the little, clueless kids you were in August. You each have your talents and so much potential; I have complete faith that you will keep The Matador alive and well next year. Do not let it die!

ow that my senior year is drawing to a close, it is needless to say that I am extremely excited to leave high school. But the end is, of course, not without its drawbacks. From a reserved freshman to an obnoxiously loud “adult,” the frantic stress and work storm of newspaper has been fundamental in shaping who I am. I will truly miss the time I spent in H2. To my fellow staff: I am not mean, trust me! Although I may have a constant scowl living on my face, an allegedly menacing voice, and frequent sighs of self-annoyance, I genuinely cared for each and every one of you. It truly was a pleasure to get to know all of you, and I hope you enjoyed getting to know how wonderful I am--even if under the roof of constant stress and deadlines. And to the next year’s EICs and staff, I entrust you with carrying on the legacy of The Matador. This may be my first time saying this, but I am positive that y’all will do exceptionally well. Do not prove me wrong!

Delay in feminine product dispensers inhibits females BY EILEEN ONG

T

he first feminine product dispenser was spotted in the girls’ restrooms in November. It is now May. Six months have passed and students still cannot retrieve pads or tampons from the dispensers. The delay in establishing operation of the dispensers shows a lack of urgency from the school, and that needs to change. California Assembly Bill 10 is a law that requires middle schools and high schools that meet “a 40 percent pupil poverty threshold specified in federal law to stock 50 percent of the school’s restrooms with feminine hygiene products.” It was signed to take effect in 2018. As a school with over 70 percent of its population on free or reduced lunch—an indicator of lowincome families—it is essential that the school provides this basic necessity to students. Period poverty is not just an issue in thirdworld countries; it is a problem prevalent everywhere. The recent Always Confidence and Puberty Survey found that nearly one in five girls in the United States have either left

school early or missed school entirely due to a lack of access to pads and tampons. Yes, free pads and tampons are currently available in the Health Office. However, students should not have to walk across campus, losing

valuable learning time, for something that can be easily stocked in nearby bathrooms. Having dispensers throughout the campus would vastly expand the accessibility of the products. The assurance of having a reliable

source for feminine products can lessen students’ constant anxiety about period care, allowing them to focus on their school work instead. In doing so, the school will provide the necessary means for female students to work without worry. Periods are a biological reality; females can neither avoid nor control them. For many, periods come unexpectedly, and female students should not have to awkwardly ask a peer or suffer an uncomfortable walk to the Health Office for a pad or tampon. As such, pads and tampons should be considered a basic necessity. Just like how the school stocks bathrooms with toilet paper, hand soap, and paper towels, menstrual hygiene products should also be a well-stocked resource for students. The school needs to be aware of the importance and urgency of this issue. Students should never have to compromise their education, especially for a normal bodily function. The school should be more efficient in implementing the program and helping break down barriers for its students’ success. ILLUSTRATION BY ECHO DIEU

Career Center lacks visibility BY LAUREN BALLESTEROS

T

he College and Career Center is open for all students to explore its many useful resources such as opportunities to attend college field trips and search for jobs, internships, and volunteer programs. However, due to the obscurity of the Career Center’s resources, much of the student body do not take full advantage of services at their disposal. The Career Center has more to offer than just its computers and printers. Many students may not realize this because the Career Center only posts flyers solely on its exterior, but rarely around campus to advertise its services. Because many students do not typically take the time to read flyers, they are

not enough to encourage students to actively engage with the Career Center’s resources. Instead, the center should reach

out to students more intentionally, such as having teachers announce important events and services to students in class. For students, the Career Center’s lack of visibility may ultimately result in missed opportunities. For example, it

ance can be something so powerful, yet it is only seen as a simple performance club. Dance is not considered to have the same athletic merit as other sports and is not viewed as a fine art, but as a dancer myself, my experiences have led me to say otherwise. Although dance, like theater, is a type of performance art and, like football, a physically intensive exercise, it is not offered as an elective or theory class. Certainly, there is no requirement to learn how to dance. But, in order to improve, dancers need to work out and practice body control in order to make moves stronger and larger. There are also dance competitions

is unfair if a student does not apply to a summer program or internship that they otherwise would have, just because they were unaware that it was available to them. If students do not know what the Career Center has to offer, they would not be intrigued to look to find out. The center needs visible advertisement of its engaging programs in order to get students more involved. Others may contend that it should be the responsibility of the students to take the initiative and go to the Career Center in hopes of bettering their own futures. However, some students, especially freshmen, may be unaware of how to do this. Because the purpose of the Career Center is to assist students with their futures, it should work to ease the confusion or hardships a student may face.

against dance teams from outside organizations, or other schools. Choreo, for example, has constantly been going to competitions, bringing home trophies. Furthermore, All-Male formed a competition team with Choreo recently, and participated in their first event already. Dance is not just a sport, but a fine art as well because it helps develop so much creativity within students. Dancers show creativity in their dance routines because they are inspired by a song to do so. They create these physical movements to flow with the song. Connecting music to dance lets students have more interest in seeing the aesthetics in a way that makes the dance better. There are many people who apply for

Choreo, but few get a chance to participate. I am not saying to have dance as a class; rather I am using the fact to prove how important dance could be to a student. For example, Mark Keppel High School’s dance team All-Male got the opportunity to compete on the biggest dance television show, “World of Dance,” where they created unforgettable memories and experiences dancing their hearts out. In summary, dance has the potential to be much bigger than any sport and fine art, but is given very little attention to behind the scenes. Choreo and All-Male put in just as much physical work as sports and are just as creative as fine art classes. Therefore,t they should at least be more appreciated for their work.

t frustrates me to no end when my broken Cantonese comes across incoherently to my parents. I try and I try, but I just can’t seem to remember the Cantonese translation. “Mami, guh laundry basket hái bindouh a?” (Mom, where is the laundry basket?) “Ngóh m̀h mìhngbaahk.” (I don’t understand.) “Laundry basket.” It makes me sad, and it makes me scared. I’m scared that one day, I will completely forget my home language. If I cannot even hold a solid conversation with my parents, the simplest thing to do, how can I expect to make them proud and happy? The thought of disappointing my parents sends waves of anxiety over me. They spent so much time, money, and effort to raise me, and I feel immense guilt for bestowing such burdens on them. I feel the need to let them live their dreams through me because if I don’t, all their efforts would go to waste. Like many Asian immigrant parents, they uprooted their whole lives in Vietnam and made the trek to America. They grew up in poverty and worked day and night to provide a safe home and hot food for their children--me and my brother. As such, I feel compelled to listen to their every wish and to make up for all the difficult nights they endured with good grades, awards, and accomplishments. Throughout the college application process, my parents tried so hard to persuade me to go to an in-state school. I remember my aunt telling me that if I moved far from home, I would break my parents’ hearts. That horrified me. I couldn’t do that to them--not when they were going to pay so much money for my education. But deep inside, I knew I didn’t want to go to the school they wanted. It took a lot of back and forth before I made my decision to go to the East coast. I was so afraid of telling my parents; I hated not being able to do what they wanted. There are fleeting moments where I regret my decision, but I know it was the right choice for me. A good friend told me, “You are not indebted to your parents.” He’s right, I’m not. I am not obligated to repay some sort of debt to them. However, I have come to realize that that does not mean I cannot forever be grateful to them for being so amazing and supportive. And so, I will make a conscious effort to fix my Cantonese while also pursuing my own dreams.

Review: Almost There captures teen experiences BY MELODY ZHANG The school’s first student-run play, Almost There, debuted on May 3. Instead of a traditional storyline with an overarching plot, it consists of several, disconnected scenes that capture various moments of high school life, ranging from light-hearted adventures to arguments between friends that revealed deep-seated insecurities. The more serious scenes are well-written and explored concepts such as teenage angst and self-identity, going beyond surface level “edginess” and emotions. From teenage pregnancy in the scene, “It Takes Two” to a strained mother-son relationship in “Stone Faced,” there is a range of dilemmas that make the play hit home for many high school students. For example, in “Environmental Club,” students Andy (played by senior Matthew Perez) and Michelle (senior Sylvia Tarango) argue due to their conflicting personalities. The scene breaks away from the stereotypes of rebellious teens to show that there is more to the tumultuous emotions felt by teenagers. In the play, adolescents are simply trying to accept themselves for who they are. On the contrary, some scenes were not executed effectively: what should have been a heartbreaking moment for the failing relationship between sophomore Rick and senior Mia

After watching the Immortals Chinese dragon dancing group perform for four days straight, freshman Ronnie Du took an interest in the dancers’ chanting and prancing. Now, as

ended up feeling unnatural because Mia’s verbal expressions did not match her body language. Additionally, while the occasional comedic scenes helped to relieve the more serious ones,

“Promposal” could have been combined into one scene or expanded on since it felt rushed. Still, the play felt realistic, and, like the real world, not every story has a “happily ever after,”

an ongoing member of the group for a year, he continues to learn how to play different instruments and hone his dancing. Dragon and lion dancing are traditional forms of Chinese performances. They are believed to scare away evil spirits and grant good fortune to the performers and audience. Although Du was initially conflicted on joining, the dancer decided to chase his own desires. “I guess I’ve always wanted [to do] it, but I always got discouraged because people [said], ‘Don’t do it, it’s a waste of time,’” Du said. “Last year, I was like, ‘you know what, I’ll just do it because I want to.’” He sees performing as a way to express himself and showcase his talents. “[Lion dancing] makes me feel more accomplished in a way,” Du said. “I don’t really perform anything else, and when I get to lion dance, I get to show what I learn.” Within the troupe, Du formed new connections with his fellow dancers. “It lets me have something to do on the weekends instead of staying home,” Du said. “I kind of look forward to it, because I have some friends in there [who] I really enjoy talking to. Some of them, I’m closer to than [my] school friends.” He strives to become more involved in lion and dragon dancing, adding to his abilities as much as possible. “I want to learn how to play the gong, the drums, stunts and stack, to get better at playing the cymbals and [doing] head movements [as] the lion,” Du said. “For now, I’ll just practice and practice more. There’s not much else to do to improve other than to practice.”

Review: ‘In Motion’ yearbook sparks nostalgia

as seen in the demise of Rick and Mia and the friendship between Andy and Michelle. The ending was bittersweet, reminding the audience that not everything works out in the end.

BY TIFFANY NGUYGEN Despite the high price of $75, the price of Volume 64 yearbook by the El Camino Real is worth it considering how every page instills sadness because of how much high school will be missed by students and the moments that were shared. Despite minor accuracy errors, the yearbook brings a feeling of nostalgia to current students who will flip through the pages years later. Notable elements include strategically-placed pictures of students on the left side of several pages. These act as windows into the captured candid reactions of students around campus and during different school events. The clever titles make each story more appealing. Another part of the yearbook that stands out is the “Art From the Heart” spread, in which artwork from student artists are displayed on a grass background. The contrast of colors and the stories from each artist are what make it special. However, some pages are repetitive and a few spreads are messy in their layout and design, like the “Senior Selfies” spread which looks as if the photos were haphazardly pasted onto the yearbook. Many photos of the clubs and organizations in the back also have inconsistent lighting, but the unpredictable weather during the club picture weeks is mainly to blame. After viewing the entire yearbook and its 244 pages, the passion and effort that the staff dem-

However, it would be more inclusive to have more segments with custodians, campus supervisors, and cafeteria staff. The pep rallies and performance teams are highlighted too much. Events, such as art galleries, sports games, lunchtime games, plays, and other smaller occurrences throughout the school year should be emphasized more. Regardless, the El Camino Real staff succeeds in creating a memorable yearbook that is an overall worthy investment.

business History of the Boba Craze BY WALLY LAN Bubble tea, commonly known as boba in California, originated and became popular in Taiwan during the 1980s. From there, boba diffused throughout the world, as shown through the big-

chain boba stores spreading internationally. It began when the owner of the Chun Shui Tang store, Liu Han Chieh, saw iced coffee in Japan and was inspired to serve iced tea. One day, his manager, Lin Hsiu Hui, added fen yuan, a sweetened tapioca dessert, to the drink, bringing life to bubble tea. Fr o m t h a t point on, boba spread throughout the world, reaching the West coast of the United States in the 1990s. Boba became popular within Taiwanese immigrant communities and blended into TaiwaneseAmerican culture. In the late 1990s, the first boba shop in the Los Angeles County opened in Arcadia. By the early 2000s, several more boba shops opened, including Ten Ren, Quickly, Ta p i o c a E x p r e s s , a n d Lollicup. C l a r i s s a We i o f L A Weekly noted, “as a Taiwanese-American kid growing up in the early

2000s in the San Gabriel Valley, the concoction [of boba] was an integral part of my social life. We, after all, were the first boba generation.” Boba stores began to compete on an aesthetic level by adding furniture, board games, and pop music in an effort to draw more consumers to their shop. This competition is seen with the new design cups from Teabrick, Factory Tea Bar, and even restaurants such as Boiling Point. Boba has spread beyond AsianAmerican culture with the rise of shops such as Boba Guys, which sell tea flavors like the Strawberry Jasmine Tea Fresca. Boba as a topping has gone beyond drinks: it can be seen adorning ice cream, bread, and even pizza. Eventually, boba stores became a “home-base” for many people, whether it be for studying for school, cramming for finals, or hanging out with friends. Boba is now an integral part of the food culture here in the San Gabriel Valley.

Q: What is the benefit of drinking boba for you? A: “Sometimes [boba] is worth it and then sometimes I feel like it is a waste of money. You don’t really need to drink boba. It’s kind of a luxury, [but drinking] water is kind of boring and [sometimes] you want to drink something that is not water.”

Sophomore Priscilla Ho was ecstatic when her father, Charlie Ho, announced his plans of opening a boba tea house in an El Monte Shopping Center. Charilie’s boba tea house, Ono Tea House, will incorporate Hawaiian and Asian culture through its ingredients. Ho said opening a boba store will be a great way for her father to return to work after he retired from the Marines. “He’s been at home since he retired and was always talking about starting a business and expanding it,” Ho said. Charlie has contemplated establishing a business for the past two years and decided he “wanted to share with people the thing that [he likes].” After developing the layout of the boba shop, he is proposing his idea to the El Monte City Hall for approval and expects the tea house to open in two months. “I want to do something; it’s just a matter of waiting for an opportunity,” Charlie said. “I just want to make drinks, sell a lot of boba, [and] make friends.” Having first encountered boba four years ago, Charlie enjoyed the chewiness and its compatibility with smoothies and milk teas. To him, “boba is plain, but if you mix it in drinks, it makes it more enjoyable.” He wants to emphasize the versatility of boba.

A-RIFFIC: RESS THEIR N FOR BOBA.

Recipe of the month: Boba TEA BY CHELSEA NGUYEN

HOW MANY TIMES IN A WEEK DO YOU DRINK BOBA TEA?

Ingredients: - 1/4 cup dried boba tapioca pearls per serving - 1 to 2 tea bags per serving - 1/2 cup water - 1/2 cup sugar - Milk, almond milk, or condensed milk - Fruit juice (optional) 1. Measure 2 cups of water for every 1/4 cup of boba in a saucepan. Bring the water to a boil over high heat. Add the boba and stir gently until they begin floating to the top of the water. 2. Turn the heat to medium and cook the boba for 12 to 15 minutes. Remove the pan from heat, cover, and let the pearls sit for another 12 to 15 minutes. 3. Create a simple sugar syrup to sweeten and preserve the boba once cooked. To make it, bring 1/2 cup of water to a boil over high heat on the stove or in the microwave. Remove from heat and stir in 1/2 cup sugar until dissolved. Set aside to cool. 4. Heat 1 cup of water to a boil. Remove from heat and add the tea bag (or bags); use one tea bag for regular boba tea or two for a stronger tea flavor. Remove the tea bag after 15 minutes and let the tea cool. 5. Once the boba has finished cooking, drain the water and transfer them to a small bowl or container. Pour the sugar syrup over the pearls until they are submerged. Let sit until the boba is room temperature, at least 15 minutes, or refrigerate until ready to use. 6. Pour the prepared tea into a tall glass and add the boba. Add milk for a creamy bubble tea, juice for a fruity tea, or leave plain and add a little extra water. Sweeten to taste with the simple syrup from soaking the boba.

Academic Awards Renaissance Award Recognized for their dedication in extracurricular activities and excellence in academics, seniors Echo Dieu and Kenny Lam were presented with the Renaissance Award at the Academic Pep Rally. Dieu was in shock and disbelief when she realized she won the award. She had to double check if she was the recipient of the award by confirming if the trophy was engraved with her name. “Rather than validation for my achievements, however, I think the Renaissance Award is simply a nice embellishment to cap off my senior year,” Dieu said. “It’s nice but no matter whether or not you win an award, your efforts are what speak for themselves. After all, I believe that there are many others in the senior class who are very talented and hardworking.” Lam said he was surprised to win the award since he was not expecting to receive anything. “I have never considered myself an exceptional student at school,” Lam said. “I just felt like I was a student who liked learning.” Throughout her high school career, Dieu participated in a variety of extracurriculars, such as newspaper, Environmental

Club, and Homeless Outreach. She enjoys digital painting as a hobby and has participated in a few of the school’s art galleries. “I did these activities to improve my own character and expand my own skill set,” Dieu said. “Newspaper helped me understand and confirm my preference in humanities and writing.” Wanting to make a local impact in his community, Lam joined newspaper and a political organization called Vote at 16–SGV. In addition to this, he competed in track and field races for all four years of high school. His main goal in school is to challenge himself academically and to take classes that spark his interest. “I’m doing all these things in school because I want to repay all the sacrifices my parents made,” Lam said. “They work long hours and support me in many ways, so I feel like to get to pursue my education passionately is just one way I can give back to them in the future.” Dieu plans to major in communications and is looking to double major in environmental studies. Lam will major in mathematics at Princeton University but is also considering physics and computer science as possible majors.

Phoenix Award

The Phoenix Award was given to seniors Tim Xu and another student who wished to remain anonymous, during the Academic Pep Rally. Both overcoming their personal struggles, the recipients were able to have their stories heard by the student body. Carrie* found it hard to stay focused in her classes, often ditching school because of her constant feelings of unease. When she was a freshman, Carrie suffered from major depression and anxiety. She felt demotivated and unhappy. After attending several cognitive behavioral therapy sessions, she started having some control over her anxiety. Through the help of her therapist, she gained a more positive outlook on life. Because of her experience, Carrie wants to let others struggling with mental health issues know that life does get better. Tim Xu faced punishments from his father for being gay. Xu was sent to China out of fear for his mental health, thinking that his son’s sexual identity was a sign of sickness. Xu did not gain confidence until the end of his junior year when he started

Student-Athlete Award The Scholar-Athlete Awards were presented at the Academic Pep Rally to seniors Vanessa Hoang and Michael Chen to celebrate both their achievements in athletic and academic activities. It was Hoang’s goal to get the award ever since she saw it in her freshman year. She participated in various activities, including Sophomore and Junior Class Council (JCC), cross country and track. “I feel like after I got the award, all of my hard work was truly validated,” Hoang said. “I celebrated by calling my parents and going to the track to update my coaches on my accomplishments. Hoang had to face getting four to five hours of sleep and balancing ASB and JCC with sports, but found ways to compromise by splitting her time. “I would say that my body kind of started giving up at times when I would put in a lot of hard work into my sports,” Hoang said. Despite the challenges she faced, Hoang said that it was worth excelling in both academics and sports, as it has allowed her to be a role model for

people on her team. “I think that I’ve learned that if you’re willing to put in the work for it, you’ll able to do it,” Hoang said, “because there [are] a lot of times where if you have a bad mentality you won’t end up achieving what you want to achieve.” A four-year tennis member and part of Environmental Club, Key Club, and Mathematics, Engineering, Science, Achievement (MESA), Chen felt surprised to receive the award because he didn’t expect to win. “I don’t think I was [as] competitive compared to the others,” Chen said. Although Chen had to sacrifice time with friends, he wanted to make his parents proud. He also had support from his friend, senior Sam Houn. “He was by my side [for] every project I did for MESA and every competition we worked together,” Chen said. Both students appreciated their respective coaches for nominating and supporting them.

working out and lost about 45 pounds. “[My weight loss] gave me the confidence to stand up straight and look up again,” Xu said. “I just felt confidence within to face any difficulties. So, the more I feel challenged, the more I want to fight against it. I had to keep pushing and challenging myself. Friends, teachers, and my mom also [played a] role on giving me lifts.” After being accepted by his mother, Xu now feels a sense of pride in his sexual identity and embraces it. He was filled with hope from the support people had for him and the LGBTQ+ community. “It wasn‘t difficult to be vulnerable in front of hundreds of students,” Xu said, “because when everyone started clapping and cheering, that was when I knew I was supported and felt love from the whole school.” Xu is proud of his sexuality and wished he had more confidence at an earlier age. “I shouldn‘t be afraid of showing who I am, he said, “especially when [earning] an award like this.” *Name changed for anonymity

Review: Mr. Right Noodles stirs up slurp-worthy concoctions BY ZHOU YE XIN

Searching for a place to satisfy my noodle craving, I decided to visit Mr. Right Noodles during their soft opening. Serving ramen, glass noodles, and rice noodles as well as boba drinks, this restaurant was one I was hungry to visit. Upon arriving, I found everything to be just right at Mr. Right Noodles. Finding parking was effortless, and the ambience of the shop had me in awe. The pastel yellow of the seating mixed with shades of grey and earthy brown from the tables and counter stood out from the dark walls. Plants and flowers were scattered throughout the shop which brought splashes of color to the restaurant. The interior design and soothing music established a laid-back atmosphere that I enjoyed. I decided to order braised beef ramen noodles for $10.99 as well as shredded tofu and shredded cucumber with sauce—two side dishes for $7.99. The total came out to be $20.78 without tip, which I consider to be an average price for two noodle dishes. My ramen was served five minutes after I ordered them, which surprised me as noodle dishes usually take longer to come out. As soon as the noodle dish was placed on the table, I inhaled the scent of the broth which hung in the air around me. With a sweet, salty, and meaty aroma, the broth and the noodles begged me to try them. The noodles were paler and less bouncy than ramen noodles I am used

to, and the broth was surprisingly light and less fatty than other beef broths I have had; it was clear and tinted yellow with little to no blobs of oil floating in it. The beef was thinly-sliced, but the pieces of beef were abundant in my bowl. The beef slices broke apart with no effort and were on the salty side. Blending perfectly with the noodles, the shallots, peanuts, soybeans, and parsley brought pops of flavor that helped cleanse my palette of the meaty flavor of the soup and provided a new crunchy texture. After finishing the dish, I did not feel the usual drowsiness and comatose state that comes after consuming a bowl of noodles. I was pleasantly surprised by the lightness of the dish. Then came shredded tofu piled in a large dish. Sliced in long rectangular strips that represented thinly-sliced noodles, the cold, wet tofu was seasoned with pepper flakes that provided a kick to the slightly sour and sweet flavor. On the other hand, the shredded cucumber with sauce was underwhelming, as it tasted like sour, raw cucumber. Although the dish provided a great, crunchy texture, it was not worth its price. Mr. Right Noodles is a delicious noodle shop to eat at, given its tasty food, laid-back atmosphere, and beautiful interior. I would recommend this place to anyone looking to try noodles for the first time and noodle lovers in search of a new noodle place. Mr. Right Noodles is located at 288 S. San Gabriel Blvd. Ste 102, San Gabriel, CA 91776 and can be reached at 626-872-1196.

Visual details, as opposed to the shallow messages the story attempted to communicate, are what delivered a convincing argument for a world where mankind could coexist with Pokemon. The fine details rendered in the CGI of the creatures look lifelike to the point of immersing audience into the quasi realism of the Pokemon world. While furry critters such as Pikachu and Psyduck make the audience melt with adoration, the slimy buds on the tongues of the amiable Lickitung and swift Greninjas send goosebumps rising. Detective Pikachu, played by Ryan Reynolds, is a witty electric mouse that charges his energy with black coffee.

Review: Detective Pikachu stuns with graphics BY ECHO DIEU

The visual artistry in Detective Pikachu alone makes it worth the trip to the cinema. Story-wise, the movie is nothing worthy of commendation, but the movie compensates its weak writing with stellar cinematography, graphics, music, and fun references to the Pokemon franchise. The story begins in Ryme City and follows youngster Tim Goodman (played by Justice Smith) who decides to investigate the whereabouts of his father after news of

his death hits. He meets Detective Pikachu (Ryan Reynolds), a talking, bumblebeecolored mouse donning a Sherlockian hat, who accompanies Goodman on his escapade. The intricate details in the world of Detective Pikachu are astounding. Flocks of Pidgeots fly overhead in the warm sky while Growlithes patrol the streets alongside officers. Pokemon weave harmonically into the environment of Ryme City as functioning members of society, giving it an eerie resemblance to the cosmopolitan hubs of the real world. The cyberpunk lights

blends intense neo-orchestral music with an 8-bit sound, seemingly as an homage to the original platform of the first Pokemon games. During heated battles, the auditory aspect of the movie helps escalate tension and elevate the audience’s movie-watching experience. Although the story was not well-executed, it was entertaining for its fresh take on the premise of the original Pokemon movie, Mewtwo Strikes Back. For that, the plot holes could be overlooked. Detective Pikachu is meant to be fanservice for anyone intimate with the Pokemon franchise and eye candy for children. For those looking for lighthearted laughs and aesthetic arrests, Detective Pikachu will give them the “Thunder Shock” of a lifetime.

Academic Awards Night

Filling the Matador Arena in the spirit of success and accomplishment, parents, students, and faculty all assembled to see the scholarships, cords, stoles, and awards given to students for their diligent efforts throughout high school. Presenters were various members of the Alhambra Unified School District (AUSD) and San Gabriel High School (SGHS) faculty, ranging from head of the Math Department Huong Tran to the Assistant Principal of School Counseling Dr. Stephanie Hall. Each award represented the student’s hard work and congratulated them for excelling in that particular field. Between the SGHS Parent, Teacher, and Student Association and the First Choice Bank scholarships, numerous local organizations and businesses handed out a total of $30, 500 to the chosen students.

The 2018-19 academic achievement honorees were presented with certificates on May 13 in the Matador Arena.

SGHS PTSA Scholarship

Matthew Perez

Q: Why did you apply for the scholarship? A: I applied because of the lack of income my family makes. All of the past scholarships I’ve applied for rejected me; [the] PTSA scholarship was the last one I applied to for my senior year.” Q: How do you feel about getting the scholarship? A: Surprised. I thought the winners of the scholarship [were] told ahead [of time], but I wasn’t told anything.”

Sam Houn Q: Why do you think you deserved this scholarship? A: “I applied for the scholarship and I guess, they chose me. I’m not really sure why they chose me, but I think I’m overall a decent student. Extracurriculars helped a lot and my improvement in my academics also contributed to [me winning the scholarship].” Q: How will you utilize this scholarship in the future as you further your education? A: “I will utilize this scholarship to further my education by using it to pay for books and school supplies and probably just for college essentials that I might need, probably for my classes and probably for tutoring.”

Kristina Kwok Q: How will you utilize this scholarship in the future as you further your education? A: “ It will overall just relieve the stresses of college debt as every penny counts. Mentally I’ll be more relaxed, giving me a more help to get through college a lot easier. I won’t have to think about paying for this or paying for that, I’ll have a chunk of expenses already paid for and I’ll have control over how I want to spend it, whether through textbooks or resources.” Q: What are your future plans? A: “I plan on majoring in Nursing at Mount San Antonio College with plans to transfer to a Cal State or UC to obtain a Bachelors of Science in Nursing. With this degree, I hope to pursue a career in longterm registered nursing.”

Matador Alumni Scholarship

Vanessa Hoang Q: Why did you apply for the scholarship? A: “I applied because I saw it throughout high school and knew as a senior I wanted to apply. I have also been doing scholarships the past few months to lessen the financial burden of going to college.” Q: What do you plan to do with your scholarship money? A: “I plan to use my scholarship money to pay for my out of state tuition and to hopefully help my parents out with the loans they’re taking out for it.” Q: What are your plans for the future? A: “I plan to attend the University of Washington, Seattle to major in biology (pre-health sciences) to hopefully become a pediatrician in the future.”

Serena Ta Q: What motivated you to apply for these scholarships? A: “Being the first to attend a four year university, education costs was a major concern for my family and I. Thus, I felt like it was my responsibility to try to alleviate this burden through applying to scholarships because this was my investment in pursuing higher education. At the same time, these scholarships also provided opportunities to network with people in the career industry I’m striving for which is a huge plus for me.” Q: Do you have any advice to give to other students? A: “My greatest advice is to take the initiative to do something for yourself. A lot of times, students do something because they are pressured into doing it by peers or by parents. As a young adult, I feel like it’s incredibly significant to consider what one desires and how he/she can accomplish that on their own terms.”

Carson Scholarship The Carson Award, founded by Ben Carson, awards students who demonstrate high levels of excellence inside and outside the classroom. Carson Scholars are given a $1,000 college scholarship and their names are engraved on a trophy kept in the office. Sophomores Brandon Tran and Joseph Pandur were announced as this year’s Carson Award recipients. Tran is a second-time recipient, and Pandur was nominated by principal Debbie Stone for his merit and involvement in school. “My teacher got a call and he tells me to go to the career center and the career center lady tells me ‘you’ve been nominated for this scholarship,’” Pandur said. “I was like ‘okay, I’ll just do it for Ms. Stone because she nominated me and she went through all the trouble.’” Both Tran and Pandur were honored at the Academic Pep Rally. Varsity girls freshman Kai Marroquin and junior Adelaida Peraza qualified for and competed at the California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section (CIF-SS) Division II preliminaries on May 4. Each competitor advanced to CIF by placing first in their respective event during the Almont League finals on April 26.

As a first year member in varsity, Marroquin has been pushing her limits throughout the season and ended up qualifying for both the 100 and 200 meter sprints. “Before the competition, I was super nervous because CIF is very competitive and most of the girls there run way faster

than me,” Marroquin said. Despite racing against competitors much older and more experienced than her, Marroquin is glad to have beaten her personal record for both events. “I’ve been wanting to break 13 seconds for the 100 meter and 27 seconds for the 200 meter before the season ended,” Marroquin said. “When I saw my results, I was happy because it gave me hope that I can get a faster time next year.” As a returning qualifier for CIF in shot put, Peraza was familiar with the competitive atmosphere. However, intimidation was the main factor that set Peraza back. The pressure she experienced this year inhibited her from her best performance. “Since it was my first time [at CIF], I didn’t really know how to feel last year and treated it like a regular track meet,” Peraza said. “But, this year, I let my nerves get the best of me when I saw the seniors from the other schools throw farther than me.” Although Peraza did not fulfill her goal of advancing to CIF finals, she remains hopeful for next season. “I know that next year, if I put the time and dedication to perfect my technique, I can make it to the second round of CIF and maybe even masters,” Peraza said. Even though the season has come to an end, the duo will continue to head down to the track and mandate their own practices in hopes to improve themselves for next year.

Huynh swings into tennis world BY HENRY CHOW

Dashing through the courts and quickly maneuvering to his victory, freshman Jaxon Huynh has come a long way from his endeavours in tennis. Huynh started his tennis adventure at the young age of seven and has continued playing since then. Huynh’s introduction to tennis was not smooth, as he endured a variety of struggles in his early stages of learning. “I didn’t really think of playing tennis at first; my dad just kind of forced me into this,” Huynh said. “I hated the first two years. I wasted money and broke rackets. I wanted to play basketball at first, but after playing tennis for seven years, I got used to it and started liking

it. I left for a year and came back, and I started liking it again.” Learning how to play was not the easiest path to follow. Huynh was completely new to tennis at the time and had to learn step by step. “I didn’t know anything so I just followed the coach,” Huynh said. “After I had another coach, I got confused because there are so many techniques out there. So for years I had to find the perfect technique for me. Some coaches from other states come help me out sometimes so I’m almost there to perfecting what techniques I want.” Despite his hardships, Huynh learned from his past experiences with games. These matches helped him learn and improve his skills, but also, get over the nervous feeling he has during games. “My first win [was] when I was 12,” Huynh said. “I was on San Gabriel city team and I was so nervous that day because I was never in a serious match. At the end, I won and after that led to an addiction for competition and winning.” Huynh’s passion for tennis does not only come from the glory of winning, but also the ideas and important lessons. “Tennis is a sport where I can get away from everything, like stress, school, drama and fights, but it’s also a sport that teaches me important morals and lessons,” Huynh said. “It taught me how to endure pain and what it feels like to get so far but yet lose. It taught me patience and how to calm myself down a lot more.” When Huynh started tennis, people told

Huynh performs a slice, launching the ball through the court to secure a point. him that he was not going to make it because of his height and skill at the time. “People told my parents, ‘Your son shouldn’t be playing tennis. He’s not the best. He shouldn’t be in our group. He should leave the team,’ but I just worked hard so people don’t make fun of my parents.” He said people started to respect him after he returned to tennis better than before. “Don’t let others make fun of you. Just do what you want to do and don’t let other people stop you. I think that life’s not always about winning and I learned that the hard way.”

Botello reaches end goal with offer to play college football BY CHELSEA LI

Glendale Community College, home to the Vaqueros, offered senior Mario Botello a chance to play college football starting this fall. It started with a text message from the coaches that said they wanted him, along with his friends seniors Saul Del Cruz, Christopher Gonzalez, and Allen Jimenez, to play for their team. “[The coaches] came to the school and they just started talking to me and my other friends about playing, and that I would be a good fit for them,” Botello said. Botello and his mother visited the college with a scouting group a month later and checked out the football field. He looks forward to learning how the game runs since each quarter in a college game is 15 minutes whereas in high school it is 12. “I feel comfortable because [my friends and I] are going as a group instead of an individual, [and] I’m really glad I’m getting the opportunity to play,” Botello said. His passion for football began the day he stepped onto the field. He felt a surge of confidence to start playing right away. “Freshman year I came, I walked down to the field, and it was just beautiful,” Botello said.

However, Botello started to question his skills in football and strength in the weight room sophomore year. He felt like he “wasn’t meant for it.” “The weight room was difficult for me because I’ve seen a lot of guys lifting more, and I didn’t lift a lot,” Botello said. “Since Coach [Kevin Encinas] came, he opened the weight room more, and I took the opportunity to lift more and more and got stronger.” Coach Encinas saw the potential in Botello and gave him the opportunity to play in the starting line-up his junior year. Botello said that he was inspired by how Coach Encinas helped the football team and committed to them. “I thought it was just going to be a senior line, but he believed in me,” Botello said. “He wanted me to step up and start.” Regaining his eagerness to play, Botello remained in football for rest of his high school career and now is now ready for the beginning of his college career. He believes he will face the same struggles as before since the players there are more experienced but will overcome it. “I’m not there yet but I’ll get there,” Botello said. “I know I will. My mom and my coach both believed in me, had my back, and kept on pushing me because they knew I could do better.”
