22 Winter on the white stuff 24 Düsseldorf Welcome to the Breeze autumn edition!

28 Couples Getaways

It gives me great pleasure to be able to introduce my first issue of the Breeze Magazine as the new Managing Director of Southampton Airport. Our airport remains a strong regional gateway, and we are looking forward to seeing more people breezing through to their exciting summer holidays.

30 Make this Christmas magical

This summer has definitely been a busy one for us with launching our first direct route to Greece with FlyLolo and the continued service to Rodez with Eastern Airways. We are looking forward to welcoming back easyJet to whisk you away to snowy slopes of Geneva, and we are already starting to plan for next summer.

36

Our relationship with Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance goes from strength to strength; we’ve hosted a successful Runway Run in June with 700 runners attending and raising an astonishing £20,000, and are now preparing for our next big jump – the charity skydive event that will take place on 8 September 2018. We hope you are enjoying our newlyrefurbished Priority Lounge, and we will continue to provide the level of service that our customers expect of us. So relax and look forward to your journey with Southampton Airport.

STAFF AT THE AIRPORT WHO TRAVEL THE EXTRA MILE

G E M M A YO U N G

Walk The Floor With… Gemma Young, Property Manager What does your daily job involve? My day to day job is massively varied which is why I love it! I am responsible for the Airport’s Property portfolio which consists of buildings and land, both on and off site. I manage tenants and their accommodation that is leased from the Airport which can range from a leaky roof to building extensions. My role includes activities such as lease renewals, rent reviews, move in/move outs and Strategic Commercial Planning and all aspects of Fire and Health & Safety related to my properties. What is your favourite part of what you do? I take pride in being my tenants’ first point of contact and assisting with their queries along with being part of the Airports Crisis Management and Disruption Response Team as it keeps my hands on the operation. How long have you been with Southampton Airport? I know I don’t look old enough but 10.5 years….! What training did you have to go through before you could do this job? I have a strong background in the aviation and commercial industry so due to this experience, I have worked in various roles including Sales, Customer Service and Commercial. I have recently qualified in Commercial Property with the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors. What made you decide to want to work in aviation/at the airport? When I was 14, I carried out work experience at Going Places Travel Agents, working my way up to managing my own store at the age of 19. I then wanted to see the other side of the holiday experience so started working at Bristol Airport at 22 and the rest is history…here I am today, still in the Travel Industry, it’s in my blood. What do you like about working at Southampton Airport? Southampton Airport has a great deal of potential and its run operationally and back of house by such enthusiastic staff who make the Airport what it is: Easy, Fast and Friendly. There is a great sense of family with all SIAL staff and our Business Partners which you don’t get in the larger airports. What has been the highlight of your time working here? I have been part of some major developments at Southampton and love seeing it grow. My professional highlight is my recent qualification in Commercial Property. What is your favourite aircraft? I am slightly embarrassed to say, that even after all the years of working in Airports…I have a massive fear of flying so I have to answer…none! Unless they are on the ground! What is your favourite destination from Southampton Airport? Although not very exotic, it’s Belfast. This destination means that my young family can easily visit our family over in Ireland without the added stress of hours of driving either side; Easy, Fast and Friendly What is your favourite thing to do outside of work? I love spending time with my family and friends in this fabulous weather having BBQ’s, water fights and going to the beach. Going back to nature camping under the stars is my favourite kind of holiday.

CHRIS HALES (AIRPORT AMBASSADOR) Chris went out of his way to help a number of displaced passengers in need of transportation back to Birmingham. Despite of the fact that Chris had finished a very tiring shift, he stayed late to provide water and snacks for all the passengers as well as helping them to find their way back to Birmingham. Well done Chris on giving the exceptional customer service to our passengers!

JASMINE SHAW (SWISSPORT) Jasmine has been highly praised for providing a fantastic customer service to a passenger checking in for his flight with Flybe. The passenger forgot to add his baggage to the ticket, but Jasmine was extremely helpful to help him identify the problem, check every detail in, making the entire experience smooth and easy. Thank you Jasmine for being amazing!

BARRY PROCTOR (SWISSPORT) Barry went above and beyond to help a passenger to crack her fear of flying. She arrived at the airport with her husband and was panicking as it was the second flight of her life. Barry had approached the couple and provided a calming influence whilst being very empathetic and caring. He helped the passenger to board the flight first and spoke to the pilot and cabin crew to ensure they were well lookedafter. Thanks to Barry the entire journey was successful, and now the passengers are booking their next flights. Barry, you are a star!

Book yourself a city break to this bustling metropolis in the heart of Europe and immerse yourself in the fashion, history and world-famous art scene that it has become renowned for. Nestled in the centre of the lower Rhine basin in western Germany, Düsseldorf is a buzzing and exciting city and offers plenty to do for all who visit. For culture-lovers, there is an eclectic mix of the old with the new; traditional to avant-garde architecture, classical to glamorous; opera and theatre, literature to the melody of up and coming artists that play in the lively bars. There are some exceptional cultural must-sees in the city - from the Art Academy to the Museum Kunstpalast, displaying classical antiquity to present day art. It’s the birthplace of poet Heinrich Heine and home to the Karneval in Düsseldorf, a carnival of celebrations that last from the 11th November to Ash Wednesday. A visit to Düsseldorf is not complete without a trip to Altstadt (Old Town). This square kilometre is home to around 260 watering holes and is known as the “longest bar in the world”: local breweries, lounges, cocktail bars, electro-clubs and sophisticated ambiences; there is something for every taste. Sip a beer with friendly locals whilst you enjoy an evening of typical

Plan your break over the winter months and you’ll be able to enjoy a beautiful Christmas experience at the Düsseldorf Christmas Market. Set in the charming historic Marktplatz and overlooked by the Renaissance town hall, the annual market opens its gingerbread houses. Underneath a sky of festive lights, you’ll find trinkets, local crafts and gifts a plenty and where you can ice-skate in Düsseldorf’s very own winter landscape.

Paris romance

In a city that is filled with romance it is no wonder Paris is one of the top destinations for a couples retreat. Fill your trip with hand-holding moments, from the stunning views at the top of the Eiffel Tower to a romantic dinner cruise on the Seine. Visit the Picasso museum, explore local boutiques and enjoy a glass or two of wine in one of Paris’ many wine bars. If that wasn’t enough take a stroll around the Tuileries Garden. The Hotel Square Louvois is ideally situated near the Louvre and Palais Garnier opera, with an underground pool and relaxation area it’s the perfect place for couples to base themselves during their stay. Diverse Majorca Idyllic Ibiza The largest island of the Balearics boasts lush countryside, dramatic coastline and a rich heritage making it an idyllic place for couples to explore. With more than 300 days of sunshine and over 80 beautiful beaches with plenty of quiet secludedcoves. Couples will love to quaff like an expert on a vineyard tour at the region’s wineries, and when it comes to dining take your place at a table of one of the 2,500 restaurants and sample the freshly caught seafood or an internationally-inspired menu. The 4* Protur Playa Cala Millor Hotel is for adults only and offers a chic and elegant stay right on the beach. F ly with: Volotea as part of a Tui package Flight time: 2 hours 5 mins

Not just a party mecca, the island is also a destination of culture and grace. Less popular with tourists and offering a little piece of Mediterranean paradise is Cala Llentrisca, a charming slender stretch of beach with the bluest of blue waters and a quaint rickety jetty where you can quietly enjoy your time together. Sample the succulent fresh catch with a bottle of local wine whilst the sun dips down or if you want to taste Paella in a truly unique setting, book a table on the terrace at Del Carmen - it offers wonderful views of the bay and the mythical island of Es Vedra.
