Winner At Southampton Airport we pride ourselves on helping to make our passenger’s journey as easy as possible. Our Breeze Through Awards recognise and reward those staff who go the extra mile.

September - Milli Carrares – Fire Milli was off duty and at the airport ready to fly to Munich for Octoberfest when a passenger collapsed in the terminal. Milli put her holiday on hold and rushed over to help the woman, not caring whether she missed her flight or not. Milli then also looked after the lady until the first aid team arrived and was praised for her caring nature and quick thinking.

October – Mike Groves – Swissport After an elderly man missed his flight and ended up losing his bags, Mike was on hand to assist and ensured that the luggage was tracked down. After chatting to the gentleman for a while Mike found out the reason he was traveling alone was because he had recently lost his wife. As such Mike went above and beyond and ensured that as soon as the bags had been relocated he hand delivered them to the gentleman to speed up the process. Thank you Mike!

November – Pete Ashton – APCOA Congratulations to Pete who is retiring soon after 18 years of working at the airport! Pete is always cheerful with a positive outlook and has proven himself to be an invaluable part of Team Southampton. On many occasions over the years he has gone that extra mile to help customers and staff alike. Pete’s favourite quote is “The only way to do great work is to love what you do” and we couldn’t agree more. The Romanovs - Simon Sebag Montefiore This is the intimate story of twenty tsars and tsarinas, some touched by genius, some by madness, but all inspired by holy autocracy and imperial ambition. Montefiore’s gripping chronicle reveals their secret world of unlimited power and ruthless empire-building, overshadowed by palace conspiracy, family rivalries, sexual decadence and wild extravagance, and peopled by a cast of adventurers, courtesans, revolutionaries and poets. Written with dazzling literary flair, drawing on new archival research, THE ROMANOVS is at once an enthralling chronicle of triumph and tragedy, love and death, a universal study of power, and an essential portrait of the empire that still defines Russia today.

Good cop bad war - Neil WOODS ‘The logic of the drugs war only leads one way: the police get smarter, so the criminals get nastier. Things can only ever go from bad to worse, from savagery to savagery…’ Neil Woods was the first and best of his kind – an undercover cop whose brief was to infiltrate Britain’s most dangerous drug gangs, befriending the foot soldiers before taking on their gangster bosses. Good Cop, Bad War is an intense account of the true effects of the War on drugs and a gripping insight into the high pressure world of British undercover policing.

Its cuisine comes from all over the globe, from delicate French delights, taste-budtingling Oriental flavours, to hearty British favourites, its menus are as diverse as its culture. If you’re taking a break with that special someone, then Manchester

has plenty to offer for a couples retreat with cosy romantic venues such as Montpellier’s back street wine bar, to sharing platters at Veeno Manchester. The cities lively atmosphere continues through its festivals, with its biggest festival Parklife, the Wigan International Jazz Festival, The Greater Manchester Fringe Festival and Bluedot Intergalactic Festival of music, science and exploration of space, all returning to the city in 2017. If you enjoy the theatre then find out what’s on at The Lowry, with shows that include Cabaret and Burlesque, to family favourite musical Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Spring’s longer days and warmer temperatures are the perfect time to explore neighbouring cities so why not immerse yourself in the beauty of the season and experience the host of spectacular natural sights and scents of Amsterdam, Lyon or Paris.

Blossoming Amsterdam

Spring is unquestionably the most beautiful time of year to visit Amsterdam. The annual carpet of richly coloured tulips burst into bloom and the lush, tree-lined canal banks welcome every visitor. Whilst the city’s flora paints a colourful canvas, nothing beats a trip to Holland’s world famous flower strip or bollenstreek so head to Keukenhof Gardens between March and May for the best blooms. Paris in bloom

You can really tell spring has arrived in Paris when every outdoor table of every bistro, café and restaurant in the city is full with people enjoying their first meal outside in the sun; when you can still feel the warmth in the air past 5pm and when all the balconies, windows and gardens in the city fill up with new plants and flowers. Paris in the spring really is magical. Join the Parisians and relax on a bench beneath pink cherry blossoms in the Seine-side garden of Square Jean XXIII. Gallivant along the quaint roads with artisanal boutiques in the Marais or stroll along the 4.5km long leafy towpaths of the tranquil Canal St-Martin in north-eastern Paris. Check the rules – many courses have strict policies that you may need to be aware of, so check before you fly. Choose your base wisely – if you’re not staying at a golfing resort make sure transport to and from the course is suitable, you may even want to consider car hire.

IBIZA Discover the other side of Ibiza this summer

T

here’s no denying that Ibiza, otherwise known at The White Island, has become synonymous for being ‘the’ party mecca but the island is also a destination of culture and grace. Hop onboard at Southampton Airport and encounter the more enriching side of Ibiza. The history A trip here reveals the remains of ancient Moorish settlements and waterways; hippie caves and rock carvings, flowing springs and amazing flora and fauna. It was first settled by Phoenician navigators around 654BC where they crafted a hilltop citadel that would be refined over centuries by Carthaginians, Romans, Moorish incomers and Spanish “reconquerors”.

The landscape The island has some truly beautiful beaches ranging from rocky coves to white sandy

shores which are among the cleanest in the Med. In land you will find beautiful white washed villages, each with their own ancient churches and on the southernmost tip of the island is one of Ibiza’s most famous landmarks, Las Salinas Salt Flats which have been in use for over 2000 years and provide the most spectacular spot for that sunset photo.

Ibiza Town The ancient capital city of Eivissa is a must see for all visitors. Immerse yourself in the island’s rich heritage at the medieval castle of Dalt Vila or sip a cocktail in the buzzing port - it’s a great place to do some celebrity spotting too!

For the freshest catch of the day If seafood is your thing, then follow the locals to Sa Caleta, a red cliff-lined secluded beach and the location of a fabulously understated restaurant. Sample the succulent fresh catch with a bottle of local

wine whilst the sun dips down or if you want to taste Paella in a truly unique setting, then book a table on the terrace at Del Carmen it offers wonderful views of the bay and the mythical island of Es Vedra.

A beach for those in the know Less popular with tourists and offering a little piece of Mediterranean paradise is Cala Llentrisca, a charming slender stretch of beach with the bluest of blue waters and a quaint rickety jetty where you can quietly reflect on life.

Surrounded by beautiful seas, great weather and stunning mountains and valleys, Ibiza entices adventure and exploration for all ages!

As the island has been inhabited since 7,000BC there are plenty of historical sites to visit. The dramatic and picturesque west coast of the island has become a hub for the creative crowd. Robert Graves, one of England’s greatest poets, was one of the first English to move to the island. There’s an amazing range of underground caves with an array of giant stalactites, stalagmites and shimmering lakes, the most impressive being the Coves del Drach.

The beach of Es Trenc is estimated to lose around 25 tonnes of sand a year being lost in people’s clothes, towels, hair and the bottom of their shoes!

Ever noticed the windmills of Majorca? In their former life, they were used by farmers to grind grain and pump water. Today their presence is so inherent to the islands heritage, that in 2004, the Majorcan government developed a project dedicated to their restoration and preservation.

In 2011, Majorca stunning Serra de Tramuntana mountain range was awarded World Heritage Status by UNESCO for being an area of great Physical and Cultural significance.

Business Travel Direct taking you further... 01895 450701 I info@businesstraveldirect.co.uk I www.businesstraveldirect.co.uk

Bleisure is on

the up, but WHAT is it?

Bleisure.

It may be an ugly mashup of Business & Leisure, but it labels a trend which is rapidly expanding in the world of corporate travel. Research has shown that six out of ten travellers are more likely to take a Bleisure trip now than five years ago, with thousands of experience-hungry Millennials turning their pressurised, caffeine fuelled work-filled trips into relaxing cultural mini-breaks. While the option of extending a business trip may not be a reality for everyone, there can be definite “Quality Of Life” benefits to Bleisure travel; 83% of such travellers say they use their increased free time to explore the city, and 54% say they have brought family members with them. Leisure time is an increasingly precious commodity to those who travel frequently on business. Longer working hours and tighter deadlines, mean quality down-time with or without friends and family is in short supply; so if the option of adding a weekend at one end of a business trip (and, maybe, even bringing a loved one with you) is on the table, why not jump at the chance? Enlightened HR managers even acknowledge that Bleisure enhances job satisfaction, aiding staff retention in a competitive marketplace.

And Bleisure can make financial sense. Some long-haul airfares can be hundreds of Pounds cheaper if a Saturday night is included (don’t forget to tell the FD), while business orientated hotels often offer bargain deals on those difficult-to-fill Saturday and Sunday nights. This is where Business Travel Direct come into their own – as well as providing a complete Corporate Travel solution, our in-house Leisure Travel experts can recommend and pre-book a range of tours and experiences in nearly every destination to enhance the enjoyment potential. However, there are a few teething problems; many companies travel policies don’t account for such things as Duty of Care on the “Leisure” part of Bleisure trips with or without family members in tow. When asked if their company had a policy for Bleisure travel, 27% of companies asked were unsure, 59% said no, and a mere 14% said yes. Policies may take some time to come into effect, but Business Travel Direct can steer you in the right direction now – after all, we believe everyone deserves a well-earned break every now and then.

VIOW S'ton Airport advert 190x130 1st 1st.indd 1

Over the years, the UK’s holiday island has firmly established itself as the perfect destination for romantics and lovers. Celebrated romantics include Queen Victoria who, with Prince Albert created Osborne, their palace hideaway by the sea.

Romantic residences

Modern-day Isle of Wight lovers include Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter who chose the peace and seclusion of the Island for their Valentine’s Day wedding.

Evenings on Wight

Winter warmth and tranquility Although only four miles off the coast of southern England, spring arrives early on the Isle of Wight and the maritime microclimate provides the perfect conditions for a romantic spring break. An early spring break on the Island provides the chance for glorious sunshine and the opportunity to indulge in an alfresco lunch – when the rest of the country is wrapped up indoors. Whether you choose a stunning beach or tucked away rural footpath for a walk, peace and serenity await on the Isle of Wight.
