Richmond Yacht Club has a great line up of summer events – and we welcome new members & visitors to join in the fun and meet a great bunch of people. Some of our events are detailed below, for the full run down visit our website!

Richmonds Cruising Series – 6 Events from November to April that includes both Racing and Cruising elements, with a mix of night sailing, day races and weekend rallies there is fun for all the family! With Beach BBQs and other on shore events as part of this series it’s a great way to get out on the water in your boat, meet some fellow yachties and have a great time. Waiheke 18/11, Peter Blake Memorial 3/12, Mahurangi Night Race 27/1, Gulf Party 18/2, Waiheke 17/3, & the final Kawau Easter Rally 14/4.

Vining Marine Single Handed Series is an exciting series for those that want to tackle the challenge of sailing alone. The races are hosted across a number of Auckland Yacht Clubs with the series managed by RYC. The next race in the 2016-17 Vining Marine / RYC Singlehanded Series is the BBYC Around Motuihe race. This race always turns out a competitive crowd and brings the breeze! With a start at Motukorea Buoy and a course around Motuihe then Northern Leading, you’ll experience every possible wind direction and lots of action. Check out our website for more details.

Victoria Friday Night Special is all about fun. These races take place throughout the summer. The series provides an opportunity for people that have little or no sailing experience to race on keel boats around the buoys in the beautiful Waitemata Harbour in a supportive, low-key environment. Experienced sailors that wish to get more sailing in or wish to try out a number of new boats are also encouraged to join. Each race you are allocated to a different boat, which can range in size from 26ft to 44ft. After each race there is a social evening for participants in the RYC clubrooms with the bar open and a meal available. The series is great for networking and meeting some of our members.

Richmond Yacht Club’s Wednesday Night Series is the original twilight, round the cans race series in Auckland. There are over ten races from early spring to late fall and 100′s of boats competing in 8 divisions. You will be sure to find something that suits your style – multihulls, sport boats, keelers and cruisers all have a place. Each race ends with dinner and drinks back at the clubhouse and one of the consistently best prizegiving offerings in Auckland yachting.

The huge outdoor auditorium provides an ideal area for educational presentations and guests speakers. The underwater observatory focuses on marine research and education, becoming an underwater classroom for school or university groups and thousands of local, national and international visitors. Stingrays, crayfish, and sharks are just a few of the incredible Marlborough Sounds marine species that guests are able to see and learn more about via guided tours and interpretive displays onboard.

Run by a marine biologist, the Marine Research & Education Centre also represents the realities of conservation, education and the involvement of different user groups in the modern world. It acknowledges the user groups and industries that our local economy relies upon and works with them to encourage a more sustainable future.

We believe this facility is of great benefit to Marlborough (and beyond) as it provides a vital connection between all those who visit, and the amazing underwater world of the Marlborough Sounds. The vision is that the project will grow and evolve over time as the community becomes more and more involved. ‘The Reef Project...

By the community, For the community’ Stage Two of the project will focus on research and enhancement with development of a hatchery to replenish and enhance the dwindling fish populations of the sounds. TAURANGA SPORT FISHING CLUB HAPPENINGS….

T

he wild spring weather has been pretty disruptive with both the Mount Motorcycles Puka Albacore Tournament and the Annual Interclub event with Mount Manuganui Sport Fishing Club both cancelled in recent times. The Monster Trout Tournament however was not affected given there is always somewhere to get out of the wind down in the Rotorua Lakes, and I tell you what…for a bunch of salty sea dogs we really did quite well on the trout.

Over a hundred fish from 53 anglers came over the weigh station for the weekend with size and quality of fish up again on last year (avg 2.136kg) demonstrating why Rotoiti has earned a well-deserved reputation as a world class trout fishery. Perhaps three times this amount were released many being that yearling size and offering the promise of continued good fishing in the years to come. The biggest trout recorded and the winner of the brand new Monster Trout Trophy was a 4.1kg brown trout to Mitchell Tombleson and the largest land-based fish going to Jono Bell with a respectable rainbow jack of 2.18kg.

Thanks to Rick Pollock who has entertained and educated the Clubs members over the past 10 years and his chat this time was no different with a A-Z of tournament tactics and as an aside he introduced us to wave gliders, if you haven’t heard about these incredible marine robotics google them and check out the versatility of these incredible machines.
