In another tragic texting and driving collision in Manitoba, Dustin Vernie, a 17-year-old in 2010, became a C6 quadriplegic. He shared his story in a film presented to the students at the mock funeral, urging people to consider whether texting is truly worth the consequences.

The commonality of vehicle collisions became evident when some Winnipeg Police officers were required to leave the crash partway through, in order to attend to a real accident.

Michael Chan, vice president of the U of M student group Students Against Impaired Driving, told the Manitoban that students should consider the direct consequences of distracted driving.

“Many of us become desensitized to the horrific stories heard in the news about car crashes resulting from impaired driving. The mock car crashes brings in a more tangible way to advocate the dangers of impaired driving, which in turn leaves a greater message to students not to commit this crime,” he said.

Is Winnipeg ready for a population of one million?

Visionary Conversations series looks at the future of Winnipeg Alycia Rodrigues, volunteer staff

nother instalment of the U of M’s Visionary Conversations series was held last week at the university’s Fort Garry campus. An interdisciplinary panel, drawing from both academia and industry, attempted to anticipate the challenges Winnipeg will face as it moves toward a population of one million in the next 20 years.

University of Manitoba president and vice-chancellor David Barnard hosted the event, which explored the future health, safety, and economic concerns of a growing Winnipeg.

The Visionary Conversations series, having just moved into its third season, is intended to serve as a forum for University of Manitoba academics and alumni to discuss their research interests with the broader community.

Students, professors, professionals, and citizens-at-large gathered last Wednesday to hear four experts explain what kind of changes are necessary and why within the realms of education, infrastructure, crime rates, and social structure in order for Winnipeg to prosper at a population of one million.

Jim Carr, president and CEO of the Business Council of Manitoba, spoke first, arguing that the future growth of Winnipeg is going to be largely dependent upon immigrants and Aboriginal youth.

“If you look at the demographic trends you will see that the birth rate in the indigenous population is much higher than it is in the non-Aboriginal population,” said Carr.

“You will see that the educational chances that these children are getting, on and off reserve[s], are not the same as my children have. That is a national disgrace.”

Immigrants and Aboriginal citizens make up just under 50 per cent of the inner city neighbourhood population, according to a 2012 report on racism in Winnipeg. According to

that report, these same neighbourhoods also endure high rates of crime and poverty.

Carr argued that the solution to crime and poverty issues lies in bipartisanship, as well as a commitment to educational reform by government and indigenous community leaders.

“We need the engagement of the leaders within these communities themselves, and we have to say to them, ‘we are here to help you establish first-rate K-to-12 education,’ then offer them all the bursaries and scholarships we can, so we can help them overcome barriers.”

Brent Bellamy, Winnipeg Free Press columnist and senior design architect for Number TEN Architectural Group, addressed various infrastructure challenges in Winnipeg, including urban sprawl, heritage buildings, the downtown area, and unappealing public spaces.

Bellamy said design models that keep human interactions in mind—such as those seen in River Heights, Osborne and Corydon, and the Exchange District—are key for building a “loveable city.” He said a loveable city is important to retaining

immigrants and young people.

“We have long forgotten how to create spaces that invite people to interact. It’s a great failing of our city that I hope we can fix in the future,” said Bellamy. “Nobody falls in love with Pembina [Highway].”

Crime specialist and sociology professor Rick Linden hypothesized on how Winnipeg might shake its old reputation as a Canadian crime capital. He described a new tri-model program intended to fight high crime rates. The tri-model program involves “smart” policing: targeting crime hotspots and repeat offenders, integrated service delivery, and community and social development, such as the LiveSAFE initiative.

“A vision for the future is that we get this program up and running within the next few months, that it proves successful, and that we are able to move it into other high crime parts of the city and accomplish the vision of ending high crime rates effectively,” said Linden.

Wanda Wuttunee, native studies professor and director of the Aboriginal Business Education Partners at the Asper school of business, ended the panel discussion, emphasizing the importance of thinking about the future of Aboriginal youth.

Wuttunee mentioned a report on racism showing that, despite many Aboriginal advocate groups, many people of Winnipeg hold the view that Aboriginal individuals bring their problems upon themselves.

The end of the conversation focused on what needs to happen within the next couple of decades to prepare Winnipeg for a population of one million. The panel agreed that challenges could be met through sustainable planning frameworks, community engagement, and strong leadership skills.

Gerstein told the Manitoban he was originally under the impression that he would be debating the UMSCL president, not Gray.

Ginter said that UMSCL had reached out to professors and politicians to debate Gray, but none would accept. She said the debate was almost scrapped in favour of a lecture, when Gerstein emerged as a potential opponent the day before.

“I definitely think the setup of the debate was fair and equal. We tried for a very long time to find an opponent for Stephanie,” said Ginter.

“Mostly, we received no response.

Those that did respond just said ‘no,’ without an explanation as to why.”

Andrew Woolford, professor of sociology and expert on genocide and war crimes, recently spoke to the Manitoban about the graphic materials employed by the CCBR and UMSCL. Woolford advanced the argument that comparisons of abortion to historical instances of genocide are not valid.

“When the claim is made that abortion is genocide one must ask, ‘What group is at stake here?’” said Woolford.

“Fetuses do not in and of themselves constitute a group; they do not engage in the social production of themselves as a group – nor has a perpetrator attributed to them an imagined group status,” he continued.

Furthermore, according to Woolford, while it is important to foster an environment of free speech on university campuses, there must also exist limitations, especially when the dignity of students may be threatened.

“It [ . . . ] does little to foster intelligent debate when everyone who supports a woman’s right to choose, or who has made the difficult decision to have an abortion, is placed in the position of being a genocide denier or genocidaire,” he said.

“If there was a legitimate basis for the genocide claim, then this might be a discussion worth having. But given the unfounded nature of the claim, it is just extremist positioning and undignified name-calling.”

UMSCL-hosted campus events wrapped up last Friday, but more are expected throughout the year.

NDP tax hike irresponsible, circumvents law Caleigh MacDonald

E

ntrepreneur Robert Half once said, “People try to live within their income so they can afford to pay taxes to a government that can’t live within its income.” This is a sentiment personified no more obviously than in our own NDP provincial government, which recently raised the provincial sales tax rate of Manitoba to eight per cent – not only breaking the law which requires that the ruling party hold a referendum vote on issues of great importance, but saddling us with far reaching consequences with regard to the provincial deficit, which currently has our province more than $500 million in debt.

When one sees a figure like that, it is perhaps not too hard to imagine why our government wanted to raise taxes. In fact, with the PST raised to eight per cent, the provincial government is expected to increase its tax intake by about $277 million per year, or $437 per household according to economists at the Fraser Institute.

One would assume that the increase in taxes might be used to

pay off the debt. Many of us have student loans, and if we suddenly started making significantly more money we’d probably use that money to get ourselves out of debt sooner ‑ that would be the logical thing to do.

Apparently, the government disagrees. All of the additional revenues collected are instead supposed to go towards improving our infrastructure and capital investments, and while I would normally have no problem with the notion of better hospital service (being an anaphylactic, epileptic klutz who’s in the hospital far too often), our government actually has a legal obligation to eliminate the entire provincial debt and balance the books by the 2014-2015 fiscal year.

By law they are supposed to have zeroed the deficit by next year and we are currently at a projected $518 million in debt, with Budget 2013 showing no sign of even beginning to chip away at that massive figure.

Greg Selinger has acknowledged this himself, saying that he is giving his party “more wiggle room to deal with

reality” by pushing the balanced budget due date back to 2017, effectively breaking the law his own government established; although of course, as of right now, no actions have been taken to pursue any legal penalty.

Pushback against PST increase That our government can show such flagrant disregard for its own laws and get away with it ought to bother everyone. If I broke a law I would certainly be prosecuted and held accountable to my government and fellow citizens. Why doesn’t it go both ways? It is troubling that more people aren’t willing to stand up to bad leadership and a lack of fiscal responsibility.

That’s not to say that some people aren’t pushing back. Over the weekend I attended a protest at the Manitoba legislature that sought to fight back against the breaches of justice by Greg Selinger’s government in the enforcement of the tax hike. Though perhaps not the most

Re: ‘UMSU removed CFS promotional materials from day-timers’

As a past president of the University of Manitoba Students’ Union (UMSU), I would like to correct some misinformation that was posted in the article “UMSU removed CFS promotional materials from day timers” printed September 11, 2013. The contracts for the daytimers had a deadline in March of each year I was president to allow

enough time to coordinate all of the content production, printing, and distribution. This included various write-ups, information sections, and ad space that is sold starting as early as November of the previous year.

The claim that UMSU could have saved thousands of dollars is misleading. In previous years, as I assume was the case this year, UMSU sells ad space to cover their entire cost of printing the day-timers (with a portion also being covered by

the CFS). UMSU is able to secure these ad sales because many of the businesses that purchase the space recognize that, in addition to advertising to 20,000 students throughout the year, the books are high-quality, and sustainably and ethically made.

By working together nationally through the CFS handbook service, UMSU also saves significant amounts of staff resources on daytimer design.

Apparently it’s not inside everybody for giving – for example, someone like me, a bisexual male.

According to the rules set by Health Canada, I will not be an eligible blood donor for another five years. And that is only if I abstain from having sex with men, a rather significant sacrifice just to donate blood.

After waiting several years finishing a string of piercings and tattoos, I finally made an appointment to donate blood. After getting to the clinic, signing in, and passing the basic physical test, I reached the single question which made me unable to donate: “Male donors: In the last five years, have you had sex with a man, even once?”

I was shocked. I answered truthfully that I had. Then I was asked when my last sexual encounter with a man occurred. I gave the blood services attendant the honest answer that my last male sexual encounter had occurred the previous weekend.

I realize that I could easily have lied and passed the questionnaire, but I would rather be rejected for telling the truth than lie for something I am not ashamed of.

After I completed the quiz, the attendant returned to com-

ment on the question I failed. She explained that I would not be able to donate for another five years.

She also mentioned that this was a new, more lenient rule and how having sex with a man at any time in the past would previously have rendered me permanently ineligible to donate. Progress.

This is wrong for so many reasons. The first is the simple fact that this rule is discriminatory based on sexual orientation, though worded in such a way so as to not appear to be explicitly discriminating against men who have sex with men. It’s based on the false assumption that homosexual intercourse is synonymous with a higher risk of having been exposed to HIV. It doesn’t make sense that a man

and woman can perform the same actions together and be deemed acceptable donors but two men are rejected. This brings up another point: the rules don’t just stop at men having sex with men. A question is directed at females asking whether they have, in the last year, had sex with a man who has had sex with another man in the last five years. This shows exactly what kind of attitude Health Canada has on the safety of sex between men.

When I’m with males or females, I practice safe sex. I am aware of my partners’ sexual history and only interact with people who I trust, yet I am defined as an HIV risk. What makes me different from a heterosexual male when it comes to safety? Quite simply, this is an outdated perspective on sexual safety.

This type of discriminatory regulation has no reason to stay and every reason to go. It limits the eligibility of potential safe donors.

For what purpose? To satisfy a fear based on a stereotype? This rule needs to change, though when that will happen is hard to predict. The new change that just occurred took decades, and was only a twitch in the right direction. Hopefully a twitch that leads to a step.

Send + Receive is also hosting Voices From Beyond: The EVP Project, a curated collection of works inspired by the Electronic Voice Phenomenon. EVP is a paranormal phenomena that manifests through technological mediums such as radio, white noise, computers, telephones, and other devices to communicate with the spirit world.

S

omewhere out in the wilds of British Columbia, Daniel Glen Monkman is putting trees into the ground.

Who is Monkman and why should you care if he is spending his days toiling away in the foothills of B.C., baggin’ up at tree cashes and screefing topsoil? Monkman is the principal songwriter and driving force behind the Blisters, and each tree planted brings him 12 cents closer to releasing their much anticipated, psych-infused, shoegazer opus tentatively titled, Are You Awake.

The Blisters hail from Selkirk, Manitoba and began when Monkman was just a teenager smitten with the sounds of Brian Wilson’s pop confectionary and the Brian Jonestown Massacre’s unbalanced mix of throwback peace, love, and jaded 90s’ ironic detachment.

They have grown from one-man home recordings to a full live band that includes musicians who have become some of the shining stars of the Winnipeg music scene.

Lyzie Burt, outside of the Blisters, is a talented solo singer-songwriter with a gift for subtle yet heartbreaking lyrics.

Danny Hacking is from the Hoots, a brooding crew of party boys that have turned heads over the last two years with their twisted garage rock sounds.

Skitty Popes and Marc Lenevue come from the Bad Nerves, Winnipeg’s newest keyboard loving punk rockers.

Lucky enough for us we get a sneak peek at a couple of songs Monkman and company have been cooking up for the yet unreleased Are You Awake, via YouTube. You can pop on over to the Blisters’ Facebook page and give “Playground” a spin. It’s a pensive piece of My Bloody Valentine-esque shoegazing excellence that explores the theme of growing up, replete with the sense of loss that follows the changes life brings. Next on the docket is the titular “Are You Awake,” a song that makes the perfect soundtrack for long fall walks under a cold grey sky.

So take a listen to the Blisters’ sneak peeks, and then keep your eyes peeled for their triumphant return to the Peg, scheduled for whenever Monkman gets back from tree planting and decides to start playing music for us again.

“Abortion [ . . . ] is not an elective procedure,” says Arthur. It is technically classified as a medically necessary service under the Canada Health Act, the act that determines how services should be provided, including what services should be accessible and funded.

Arthur, as well as those involved in the “Raise Your Voice for Choice” rally, believes that the core issue is not really about debating funding, but about a woman’s choice and right to self-autonomy. This sentiment is echoed on a poster being circulated in support of the event: “This is not about money.

This is about choice.”

Whether they agree with the question or not, it is being put forward in a very public way, and the organizers are inviting a strong response. The MFL has asked its supporters to join them and help “underscore our position once again.”

And for the general public?

“If you don’t understand the debate, come and chat,” says Ray Eskritt.

“Everyone should be there. Absolutely everyone.”

A

s one of Canada’s largest urban centres, Winnipeg has long been a multifarious population— city slickers, rural expatriates, transplants from across the country and beyond—and few local bands capture that spirit of eclecticism as well as scrappy country punks Cheering For the Bad Guy. Their recently-released album, Next Year Country, is their third full-length outing, and is at times both melancholy and raucous, gritty and tender, and frequently laced with meticulous lyrics both conversational and literary. At its heart, the record has the soul of a wandering troubadour, albeit one who could kick your ass. Tales of working-class Joes and far-off—but still familiar—places abound on this album, which is fitting, considering the band’s principal songwriter and wordsmith, Sheldon Birnie, is also an author and journalist.

Birnie was generous enough to take some time away from his innumerable creative projects to converse with the Manitoban about Next Year Country, and the album’s upcoming release party on Oct. 4 at the

Windsor.

The Manitoban: What would you say were your biggest inspirations behind Next Year Country? What sparked some of the songs on this album?

Sheldon Birnie: Musically, we were really just trying to get a record down on tape that sounds the way we do on stage live, or in the basement jamming.

There is a lot of dual guitar and banjo interaction that we were able to focus on that I’ve always loved from the Stones’ early 70s stuff, and we were able to incorporate some more harmonization with regards to vocal work.

Thematically—and lyrically, I guess—I wanted to really just explore a truly contemporary country music aesthetic. Not like “contemporary country” by way of radio or popular trends, but [the] sort of stories and songs [ . . . ] Hank Williams [would] have written if he were a

30-year-old dude from the sticks, living in an urban centre today. Not relying on codified musical tropes and styles that fit into the country genre, per se, but going to the heart of the “three chords and the truth” idea of songwriting.

M: What are some of the ways you feel you’ve grown as a band since the release of your last album, To

the Last Drop (2010)?

SB: When that record came out, the band pretty much changed immediately to sound almost nothing like the band on the record. Over the past three years since then, we’ve changed quite a bit.

We’ve added a solid bass player (Cal Austin Jr.), and Kevin Bones is back in the mix on guitar (he was on the first record from 2007). We’ve been playing together now for about a year solid, and the chemistry is there. We really feel like we nailed that chemistry on this recording, and are keen to share it with folks.

M: How are you feeling about your upcoming CD release, and what can people expect?

SB: Pumped up. People can expect to get good and greasy with us in a great, gritty room at the Windsor.

M: What do you foresee

the next year having in store for you, as a band or for you personally?

SB: Just keeping on the same train.

We’d like to share this record with as wide a variety of folks as we can.

We’d like to hit the festival circuit across Manitoba and into neighbouring provinces come summer, and have a couple laughs along the way. We’re nice enough fellows, and would like to whoop it up with you and your pals in a responsible fashion at some point in the near future. See you soon?

Bison Football prevails in Homecoming Game Manitoba tramples Regina 34-15 Nolan Kowal

n a cool, rainy, and rather unpleasant Saturday afternoon at Investors Group Field, the Manitoba Bisons overcame the elements and beat the visiting Regina Rams 34-15 in the annual Homecoming Game.

Not surprisingly, the rain had both offences sputtering in the opening quarter. It was a big play on special teams that put the home side on the scoreboard first. Bison fullback Andrew Barry blocked a Regina punt deep in Ram territory, and linebacker DJ Lalama promptly collected the loose ball in the end zone. After a failed two-point conversion attempt, the Bisons led 6-0 just over five minutes into the game.

Late in the first quarter, the Bisons put together an offensive drive that was aided by two Regina pass interference penalties. Bison quarterback Jordan Yantz, who was a threat to run all afternoon, scampered for 39 yards and was brought down at the five-yard line.

A few plays later, Barry muscled his way into the end zone from the one-yard line to put the Herd up 13-0 after one-quarter of play.

Yantz finished the day with 97 yards rushing, matching star running back Anthony Coombs’ rushing total of the afternoon.

The Rams had a chance to get some momentum back early in the second quarter, but kicker Zach Schmidt missed a 24-yard field goal. The play resulted in a single point. Regina trailed 13-1.

The Bisons took full control of the game: Yantz rolled to his right and found offensive lineman Matt

Hallock all alone in the end zone for a three-yard touchdown strike to put Manitoba up 20-1. Hallock had reported as an eligible receiver on the play, and it was actually his second major of the season. The former Winnipeg Rifle scored on a similar play in a loss to the Saskatchewan Huskies earlier in the year.

Midway through the quarter, Regina quarterback Cayman Shutter ran up the middle and slid feet first, but was drilled by Bison defender Jordan Linnen. The Ram pivot was down on the turf for several minutes while Linnen was ejected for rough play. Shutter, who came into the game leading the Canada West conference in passing yards, left the game and did not return. Former Bison QB and Winnipeg native John Kiesman was forced to come in for the Rams.

The Bisons were looking for even more points before the half, but Yantz was sacked and stripped of the ball by Brady Aulie. Ram linebacker Michael Stefanovic returned the fumble from midfield for a touchdown to make the score 20-8.

The Bisons answered quickly on the ensuing drive, as Yantz stood in and threw a dart to slotback Andrew Smith who outran the Regina defenders to the end zone. The 89-yard catch and run was the fourth longest in Bison history, and it put them up 27-8 at the half.

The second half didn’t feature nearly as much scoring; in fact, there were no points in the third

quarter. Regina QB John Kiesman had a tough second half. He made some bad decisions and threw three interceptions, including one into triple coverage. He did manage a short touchdown pass to slotback Mark McConkey, but the Bisons answered when Yantz threw yet another TD pass to Bryden Bone to put the game away.

In an intriguing subplot, the two teams combined for 435 penalty yards. The Bisons earned 235 of those, a record within the conference this season.

Jordan Yantz completed 9 of 17 passes for 134 yards with three touchdowns and one pick. The Bison QB now has an impressive touchdown-to-interception ratio of 15:4 on the season. Defensively, Connor Lesperance had two interceptions for the Herd.

Head coach Brian Dobie was pleased with his team’s performance.

“That was by far the best game we’ve played as a team,” Dobie said. “I thought the offence did a very good job today, especially in that first half.”

A

fter their moral victory in a scoreless tie with the nationally ranked Alberta Pandas, the Bisons hoped to continue building momentum the following day as they took on the Mount Royal Cougars.

The Bisons rarely capitalized on their scoring chances through their first five games of the season, but were in exceptional form on Sunday. Elyce Molyneaux opened the scoring for the Bisons at the sixth minute, scoring a direct goal off of a free kick. Fifteen minutes later, Daniella Scerbo scored after breaking in one-on-one with Cougar goaltender Kelsey Marklund, giving the Bisons a 2-0 lead.

Mount Royal would tie the game before the half, with goals coming in

the 39th and 55th minutes.

The wind began to pick up in the second half, which seemed to stifle both offences. It wasn’t until the 81st minute that the Bisons would regain the lead. Scerbo scored her second goal of the game, with an assist from Megan Graca. With a slim lead in the final 10 minutes, the Bisons looked to secure their second win of the season.

It wasn’t meant to be,. The Cougars tied it up in the 87th minute.

With the tie, the Bisons are now 1-3-3 on the season and currently 10th in the Canada West conference, three points out from a playoff spot.

Prediction: They’ll lose a close one to Tampa in the wild card game.

Key Players: Josh Donaldson, Yoenis Céspedes.

Prediction: They’ll come close this year in the divisional series but the Tigers have too much talent.

Detroit Tigers: It’s hard to bet against a team that has two of the best sluggers in baseball. Having three great starters in their rotation will help the AL Central champs.

Key Players: Miguel Cabrera, Prince Fielder.

Prediction: I picked them to win the World Series at the beginning of the season and I’m sticking to it.

They’ll have a tough time getting there but I think the Tigers are taking it all this year.

National League: Atlanta Braves: The Braves came into the season with one of the most stacked teams in baseball.

Prediction: It’s going to be a very close game but I think the Reds have an edge on the Pirates. The Bucs will lose a very close wild card game to the Reds.

If you’re working out with a friend, maybe the two of you can grab some coffee afterwards. If movies and television are more your thing, allow yourself some solid time in front of your favourite show.

Trainers can be pricey, though, so if it’s not in your budget, grab a friend who frequents the gym to show you the ropes. Strength training, though important, can be dangerous if you don’t use proper form and proper weights for your athletic ability.

Strength training is imperative for increasing your bone density; having low bone density can increase the risk for developing osteoporosis. Strength training can also help with weight maintenance, cardiac health, and depression.
