"Who has jurisdiction over water?"

SPAC hosts pipeline resistance panel, kicks off Water is Life campaign Malak Abas, staff

he University of Manitoba hosted the Student Pipeline Action Committee’s (SPAC ) inaugural speaker panel event on Nov. 2.

The event, titled “Beyond Borders: Pipeline Resistance from Standing Rock to Manitowapow,” was held in Robson Hall and featured panelists Aimée Craft, Clayton ThomasMuller, Sadie-Phoenix Lavoie, and Dallas Goldtooth, who was featured via webcam.

After opening remarks by elder Carl Stone, each panelist was invited to share their stance on the history and implications of pipelines.

That same day, not long before the event began, the Supreme Court of Canada declined to recognize special religious freedoms for the Ktunaxa Nation in British Columbia, which had been fighting to prevent a private ski resort from being built on land sacred to their community.

Craft, an assistant professor of law at the University of Ottawa and former director of research of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, said “I think that it’s a landmark – or watershed – day, in terms of how we now know that the Supreme Court of Canada will not recognize Indigenous law in the way that we do, in the way that we value it, and in the way that we know it to be, in terms of our relationships with all of creation.”

Craft taught at Robson Hall until last year before moving to Ottawa.

The court does not recognize “our relationships with water, our relationships with the spirits that guard particular lands and territories, and, in this case, the grizzly bear spirit who looks after a place that’s very important to the people of that region,” she said.

The law of the land

Craft went on to say that a proper examination of the legal ramifications of resource extraction in the age of what she referred to as “so-called reconciliation” requires a “transjurisdictional” approach.

“If you ask the simple question, ‘Who has jurisdiction over water,’ there is not a lawyer that will be able to answer that question clearly, because it’s about complex jurisdictions and complex sovereignties,” Craft said. “Part of what we don’t understand is that the water itself is a legal actor, has agencies, is a legal entity in and of itself.”

Thomas-Muller also commented on the clashes of different jurisdictions across legal borders, referring to the many layers of provincial, federal, and First Nations government relationships as “pretty confusing.”

“The buck gets passed consistently between the feds and the provinces over First Nations concerns,” he said.

“And Trudeau has yet to deal with what Prime Minister [Stephen] Harper did before him when he gutted the [Navigable Water Protections Act] and removed protection over millions of lakes, rivers and streams.”

“It’s no longer required for an environmental impact review here in this country if a pipeline company wants to build a pipeline across a river that you depend on - a creek that you depend on," he added.

"And this has significant consequences for our native people especially, who have a sacred relationship to the water, who have the rights to hunt, fish, and trap […] We have constitutionally protected rights that are wound up in that complicated jurisdictional mess, that, in my mind, is by design.”

When asked if the panelists believe that Canadian law students are being properly educated on Indigenous law and its complicated relationship to state law, Craft said her answer “has to be no,” but noted that, “Indigenous law is learned primarily on the land.”

“Can a law school offer that? Not that I’ve seen so far,” she said. “I think there are attempts to do that - aboriginal law camps, Indigenous law camps across Canada […] A lot of it doesn’t happen in four walls. Are there efforts being made? I think so.

The fund was established to be used for activities or projects not normally funded by the operating or capital budgets of the faculty of

arts. This includes funding undergraduate and graduate conferences, workshops and presentations, student study space renovations, student publications, and visits by guest speakers.

ASBC president Jakob Sanderson said faculty of arts students have been donors to this fund for many years in the past. Every three years, arts students vote on whether to continue paying into the fund or not.

“For the last while, at least since 1997 and possibly earlier than that […] undergraduate students have been giving to the Arts Endowment Fund,” he said. “It expires every three years and we have to sort of re-up.”

Sanderson explained that last year was when the renewal vote would have taken place, but the student council at the time, led by Issac Weldon, held a referendum which asked arts students to pick between funding either the Arts Endowment Fund or a student initiative fund, to pay into both funds, or neither. The student initiative fund would have been funded by undergraduate students for undergraduate students only.

“The question was different than what it had been in the past,” Sanderson said. “The ASBC leadership at that time, they wanted to also give the possibility of having a student initiative fund. At that time,

the referendum failed.”

Sanderson said that in an attempt to simplify things, the student council this year chose to present students with one option, which was to vote on whether to pay $1.50 per credit hour for the Faculty of Arts Endowment Fund.

“We wanted to renew the referendum question in October with just the Arts Endowment Fund or not,” Sanderson said. “What was chosen was the 'not' option.”

Sanderson added that the fund will still be used, but “won’t be able to grow as much until students start to give again.”

“I’m not going to speculate on what each individual student decided when they made their decision, but what I will say is that we are currently in an environment where there are a lot of extra fees being added to students - or at least the threat of new fees being added to students in the near future with Bill 31 going on in the legislature right now - and I think as much as I do believe that the endowment fund can be a very beneficial thing for students, I also think that students have every right to say that they don’t want more costs to be added to their plate.”

Extended fall break coming to U of M University senate approves recommendations for revised academic schedule, including a four-day fall break Qudus Abusaleh, staff

The University of Manitoba Senate has just approved a new academic schedule which will include a 4-day Fall Break and shortened fall and winter terms.

he University of Manitoba senate approved changes to the academic schedule that includes a four-day fall break and shortened fall and winter terms at its regular meeting Nov. 1.

The goal of alleviating high levels of student stress prompted the introduction of a two-day fall term break prior to the Thanksgiving weekend in 2016. Soon after, a review committee was created to examine the academic term duration and schedule.

The committee, comprised of faculty, staff, and student representatives, met several times through the spring and fall of 2017 to discuss current scheduling practices and constraints at the university.

A survey posted on UM Today in April that polled students, faculty, and staff saw responses from 638 students and 105 faculty and staff members.

The University of Manitoba Students’ Union (UMSU) VP advocacy Allison Kilgour noted that student feedback “was crucial in this process.”

The revised academic schedule also includes changes to the start of the winter term. Currently, the winter term begins the day after the university reopens following the winter holiday closure.

The new academic schedule will see classes begin the Monday following the reopening of the university, which means students will have three days added to the winter holiday break.

The memorandum suggests that “the additional days may be used for start of term activities, marking and grades submission and administrative and registration processes related to fall term results.”

Amnesty International illuminates Rohingya persecution NGO calls on Canadian government to address crisis in Myanmar Diana Ubokudom, staff

mnesty International and the Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization of Manitoba (IRCOM) hosted a panel discussion Nov. 1 examining the persecution currently faced by the Rohingya peopel in the northern part of the state of Rakhine, Myanmar.

Humaira Jaleel, co-chair of Amnesty Iinternational-Group 19 and panelist, described “unlawful killings, mass murders, massacres, sexual violence [against] women and girls,” and the “burning of villages” as some of the recent documented dangers faced by the Rohingya in Myanmar.

States, among other countries, have shown immense support.

“Generally, other countries actually have recognized what’s happening,” she said. “On Oct. 29, there was a solidarity day where there were rallies and demonstrations happening all over United States and in Canada, but then actually turned into a week of solidarity.”

According to a citizenship law passed in 1982, Myanmar does not recognize the Rohingya as one of the county’s 135 official ethnic minorities, and denies them basic rights including the right to work, study, marry, practice their religion, own property, participate in the electoral process, travel, and receive health care.

Jaleel said the violence began when members of the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army attacked border officials. The response of the military was “A blanket policy of criminalizing the whole entire population,” rather than focusing on the perpetrators of the attack or finding solutions to the abuses faced by the Rohingyas.

She said that although other ethnic minorities were also affected, it is the Rohingyas who have suffered the greatest persecution.

“There are towns where women and girls are separated from their men, and all the men were killed […] burning of villages, and these are not just burning of certain houses,” Jaleel said during the event. “We’re talking about entire villages that have been burnt, with sometimes, people inside them, and these are in hundreds.”

Jaleel added that, to make matters worse, the entire country, “especially Rakhine state,” has been sealed off from journalists, and more importantly, “the NGOs" and “humanitarian agencies” who would have

otherwise provided aid to the fleeing community. Jaleel added that due to lack of access into the country, Amnesty International has been unsuccessful in investigating the matter directly.

“Amnesty has been trying to research what happened but because Myanmar has closed its borders to journalists, to any NGOs, to any humanitarian aid agencies, there’s no way of actually researching and finding out what happened,” Jaleel said in an interview.

She added that since access to the country had been blocked off, obtain-

ing accurate information on the current state of events in the country is extremely difficult.

“How do we know all of this when there is a complete blockade of Myanmar,” she asked.

“From witness accounts of hundreds of people, from satellite images, from the data, from the photos and videos that have been collected and [...] sent to experts who have examined them, and all have given to the conclusion that there are crimes against humanity that are happening in Myanmar.”

Jaleel called on the United Nations Security Council to adopt a series of

measures aimed at mitigating the situation.

“We’re also asking the UN Security council to also put an arms embargo, not to give any military assistance and also to have financial sanctions on the people who are responsible for these acts,” she said. “Because the problem is the military is not answerable to the civil government.”

She commended the international community for the positive response on the issue both within the continent and beyond. She mentioned that Pakistan, India, the Philippines, Canada, and the United

Aung San Suu Kyi, Myanmar’s state counsellor, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate and an honorary citizen of Canada, has been criticized for her failure to stand up for the rights of the Rohingya despite Prime Minister Justin Trudeau imploring her to condemn the violence. This has lead to the circulation of an online petition urging Trudeau to revoke her citizenship.

Jaleel said the Canadian government has a role to play in bringing awareness to the hardships faced by the Rohingya.

“In a country where we enjoy so many freedoms, we should be able to raise our voices for those who are being persecuted,” Jaleel said. “We want the Canadian government to actually do something about it. We’ve heard words, but now it’s time for action.”

Shauna Labman, an assistant professor at the U of M’s Robson Hall and another panelist at the event, said that while advocating for one group of refugees, other refugee groups must not be left out of the conversation.

“I think we have to push away these blinders, push beyond seeing particular groups,” she said. “And yet at the same time, recognizing the need to advocate for particular groups. Recognizing the need that some groups need a bigger, louder voice in particular moments.”

“Beyond signing petitions, possibly donating to charity and speaking out, keep in mind that there are other groups on the ground here in Winnipeg, either through resettlement or through asylum claims who are coming here and they need support just in terms of general humanity,” she added.

Labman said that at this moment, a “bigger, louder voice,” should be used for the benefit of the Rohingya people.

“So right now the Rohingya need our voice,” she said. “But we have to make sure that when we’re using that voice, we’re not using it to the exclusivity of other groups that need it.”

These moral considerations come to fruition in a relatively simple, single belief that relationships as deeply intimate as sexual and romantic ones must be held between equals. Age differentials that involve minors and adults introduce a troubling inequality because the sexual partners possess disparate levels of maturity and experience, both emotionally and sexually. This gives the older, more dominant partner a great deal of power and authority over the younger, more subordinate partner, and further intensifies the latter’s significant vulnerability in sexual interactions.

When lacking this element of equality, a relationship is better characterized as one between predator and prey than consensual lovers.

all Me By Your Name is the film adaption of a novel depicting romance between two men in 1980s Italian bourgeois society. Now, allow me to call it as it is: the romance is not between two adults, but between a 17-year-old boy and a 24-year-old man. It is not a romance, then, but a perverse romanticization of what in reality would be a predatory relationship.

The film opened at the Sundance festival in January 2017 but is only beginning its general release in the U.S. come late November. It will be released in Canada in early December.

Since its initial showing, critics have raved over the film’s so-called sensual passion and earnest portrayal of young love between two flames.

The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw published praise, saying the film is full of “poetic languor” and a “deeply sophisticated sensuality,” only after mentioning it was also a “coming-ofage” story. What age are those who ‘come of age?’

Stacey D’Erasmo of The New York Times called the original novel “as much a story of paradise found as it is of paradise lost,” only in the next sentence acknowledging that the plot revolves around an “adolescent sexual awakening.”

By filtering the subject matter of the film through a rose-tinted lens, commentators and critics have become complicit in justifying a practice that not only plagues the film industry, but also affects relationships between gay men generally.

Traffic enforcement in Winnipeg an exercise in coin collecting City officials need to make safe laws, not profitable ones Kenny Ingram, staff

f you have received a traffic ticket in Winnipeg, you are far from alone.

In 2011, there were roughly 130,000 traffic tickets issued in Manitoba, and that number has been climbing. In 2015, there were nearly 200,000 issued.

With these increasing numbers, some serious questions have been raised.

Founders of the organization Wise Up Winnipeg, Todd Dube and Chris Sweryda, began looking into traffic enforcement almost a decade ago. They found numerous flaws with Winnipeg’s system of traffic enforcement.

What are the biggest issues with our enforcement in Winnipeg? First, the fines themselves. Manitoba consistently has the highest ticket prices in Canada, and by Manitoba Public Insurance’s (MPI) own admission, “Manitoba has some of the highest speeding fines in North America.”

What is the purpose of these large fines? MPI can give no good reason: a recent study by the Australian New South Wales government looked into the effect of speeding tickets and found that “higher fines do not reduce the risk of re-offending.”

Now, Manitoba speed limits are established at the speed at which 85 per cent of motorists travel down a given road. The City of Winnipeg claims to follow this method for setting speed limits in conjunction with engineering guidelines for establishing safe speeds. The city also acknowledges that “many studies conducted throughout North America have shown that drivers’ speeds are mainly affected by the context of the road and not by speed limit signs.”

My talks continued with delegates, some of whom I have known for a while, some whom were very vocal on who they were supporting. Others kept their opinions to themselves and saved it for the ballot box. I found there were a lot of shirts worn, massive signs waved, and an awful lot of support cheered for rookie MLA, and daughter of MP Kevin Lamoureux, Cindy Lamoureux.

Cindy Lamoureux was not quick to speak with anyone in the media during the day. Her campaign manager was fairly elusive as well, seen once at the media table but not willing to speak with the Manitoban.

Lamont faces a serious challenge: he needs to unite a financially-broken and policy-bare party that has notoriously suffered from unorganized messages and inconsistent unity Winner takes all

n the second ballot, by just eight votes, party organizer and second-time leadership candidate Dougald Lamont defeated Cindy Lamoureux to take the top job as leader of the Manitoba Liberal Party.

I had the opportunity to cover the convention from the beginning, where the unorganized flow and processing of delegates threw off the scheduled itinerary of the day, right until the end of the second ballot. All in all, it was a long day - for me and the party.

The Liberals need a new way if they ever expect to have any political fortunes in the future I myself am familiar with the party and its leadership candidates.

From 2014 to 2016, I was active in the Liberal party and even stood as a candidate in the recent provincial election. However, on a "political hiatus" and without membership for more than a year, I felt that my reporting

would be unbiased. That is not to say, however, that I do not hold an opinion on the fate of the party - after all, like the majority of the reading audience, I am a Manitoban, a voter, and someone who personally feels the state of our provincial affairs rests largely on the leadership that guides our major political parties.

Who’s who?

I started the day by interviewing the leadership contenders’ campaign managers before the voting had begun. Eric Stewart, campaign manager for Dougald Lamont, and I were able to chat between the very hectic days. Stewart could be seen walking the convention floor, cell in hand, madly organizing Lamont delegates. Lamont’s campaign slogan could be seen on buttons worn by supporters and heard in their chants, “Our new way.” The campaign slogan is promising and hopeful, and I am sure his supporters felt encouraged by it. The Liberals need a new way if they ever expect to have any political fortunes in the future.

Stewart called Lamont a “very sincere, very down to earth, very intelligent person,” and his efforts as campaign manager paid off: from

the time he and I spoke until the end of the second ballot, Stewart almost seemed more pleased than Lamont.

Stewart said that he and Lamont got to know each other by both working on the failed mayoral, and then successful federal, campaigns of Robert-Falcon Ouellette. Lamont’s involvement in the Ouellette campaign likely would have exposed him to the social and economic issues plaguing many residents of Winnipeg Centre, such as poverty and unemployment. Whether this will play a part in influencing Lamont’s policy decisions and the party’s direction is something to be seen. One would hope so, given the severity of the aforementioned issues in that riding.

Around 1 p.m., I found David Mintz, campaign manager for Jon Gerrard, who had lost out in the primary vote. One has to wonder why despite the fact that Gerrard had been the lone Liberal MLA for a long time in the legislature - Gerrard should be the leader when he was once there and had resigned.

One might say that the party should not trust the man who has never been able to bring the bruised Manitoba Liberal party out of the political wilderness in the 15 years,

from 1998-2013, that he was tasked with leadership.

Gerrard, making a second bid at the job, seems regressive if the Liberals want to compete with political rivals. Gerrard has competed, he's been there, and his results have been almost consistently stale. Meanwhile, Lamont running a second time after losing in 2013, if anything, shows some level of commitment to the party.

Lamont’s provincial success will rest largely on messaging and unity, something fairly foreign to the Manitoba Liberals For some, Gerrard’s second most recent run for the leadership could seem off-putting given his age and his time as leader before. Mintz’s parting words on Gerrard’s abilities were “the strongest steel is forged in the hottest fires.” While that is a catchy saying, Gerrard’s fire may just

Lamont ran in 2013 and was beat. His energy and ideas for the Manitoba Liberal Party were essentially armchair politics for the last three years. It remains to be seen if he will be able to lead the party out of the wilderness.

His intraparty success aside, Lamont’s provincial success will rest largely on messaging and unity, something fairly foreign to the Liberals.

Lamont will have to show that he can be an alternative to Brian Pallister’s PCs and must be able to find a way to rise above the NDP. New Democratic leader Wab Kinew has been a strong performer in the legislature and has been keeping the government on its toes. Kinew has challenges internally but is proving that he can manage them, work on them and still run the NDP relatively well.

Meanwhile, Lamont has no seat so he cannot participate in question period and fight it out with his opponents. Lamont’s biggest fight, undoubtedly, will be his need to unite a fragile party and to show voters that they have a Liberal party worth voting for. For that reason, perhaps it is well Lamont does not currently hold a seat.

ontreal-based graphic designer and artist Sébastien Aubin is the University of Manitoba’s first Indigenous designer in residence.

Aubin will be producing a new body of mixed media work during his six-month residency, which began in September and will culminate in an exhibition at the end of his residencey.

Aubin holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Université du Québec en Outaouais, and has designed publications for Plug In Institute of Contemporary Art, Carlton University Art Gallery, and local artist KC Adams, among others.

Aubin said his graphic design work pays the bills, but he also finds time to be a member of two art collectives. Aubin is a founding member of ITWÉ Collective, which is “dedicated to researching, creating, and educating audiences about

Indigenous digital culture.” He is also a part of the AM Collective, “which creates works that revolve around the imagination to spark dialogue on subjects that relate to everyday life and emotion.”

“We try to have a sense or feeling of what would we look like, or what would we be perceived as, if colonialism never happened,” Aubin said of ITWÉ.

“Not trying to decolonize - I don’t like those terms - but the pared-down term would be colonization. Like if it never happened, but we still have the industrial revolution and like, what would our buildings look like and stuff like that.”

Aubin will be working on as many as seven pieces throughout his residency, including a Cree syllabic font he has already put two years into developing, a sculpture of shoes harvested from the dump at his reserve, Opaskwayak Cree Nation, and a drag performance.

“All these things that I want to do here are things I’ve always wanted to do,” Aubin said. “I’ve put a lot of thought into and I know how to do them and I know exactly what I want, I just have to do it now.”

Part of Aubin’s role in the residency will be to interact closely with faculty and students. Events such as the public design lecture he delivered on Nov. 2 looking at the history of his work and his goals with the residency are an example of how he may approach this interaction.

“I think while I’m here I’ll be able to do something,” Aubin said. “At least start a conversation.”

Hormone haven New Netflix series Big Mouth takes the awkward embarrassment out of puberty Olivia Michalczuk, staff

W

riter and creator Nick Kroll, and writers Jennifer Flackett, Andrew Goldberg, and Mark Levin are the brilliant team that created Big Mouth, the ultimate sex-ed video/guide to puberty out there.

The well-done show is also backed by some amazing well known and celebrated comedians like Maya Rudolph, Fred Armisen, and Jordan Peele.

In some of the cartoons we are most familiar with as kids, animation brings to life the impossible.

Classic children’s cartoons use comedic exaggerations to create a world that is not our own but is an escape from our reality.

As entertaining as it is for adults, young adolescents would benefit from the themes in the show, ranging from menstruation to erections and self exploration to questioning sexual orientation “Adult” cartoons seem to juxtapose the innocence of the form, allowing excessive vulgarity in shows, zero consciousness for characters, and of course very limited consequences for those characters’ actions. The infinite worlds of the popular series Rick and Morty and the perverted James Bond-esque series Archer are great examples of this.

Conversely, recent Netflix series, Big Mouth, uses the art of animation to create a show that is the perfect balance between comedic, educational, and outrageous. Two young boys and their classmates are struggling through something we all have, puberty. However, their hormones are personified through “hormone monsters,” large, vulgar, honest, and sexually charged fairy godparents of the young teens on

the edge of adulthood. The adolescents’ relationships with the hormone monsters evolve from one of resistance to one of friendship that allows them to have a free-flowing dialogue about their bodies, minds, and emotions. Because the characters are so young, animation is the perfect form to tackle those topics.

The intended audience for the show is very broad. As entertaining as it is for adults, young adolescents can benefit from the themes in the show, ranging from menstruation to erections and self exploration to questioning sexual orientation. The issues that both male and female characters face are the topics you wish your teachers had covered in class. The show is also seemingly reliable because of its honesty and tell-it-how-it-is approach, which makes it funny as well as extremely informative.

Episodes like “Everybody Bleeds” and “Girls Are Horny Too,” specifically address the issues of female lead Jessi. Jessi is encouraged by her hormone monster to yell at her mother, embrace her sexuality, and explore her body, all things that are relatable and embarrassing when there isn’t a healthy dialogue or education.

Sexual harassment, lack of male knowledge on the female body, and adult sexual frustration are all things addressed in this series that should be easier to talk about to your friends, family, and in the media. Through humour, Big Mouth removes the stigma and creates a platform for conversation.

The fact that schools don’t provide the proper sex education to students is addressed in the opening line of the first episode and works to set the tone for the rest of the series. Male leads Andrew and Nick are watching a dated sex-ed video in class about female reproductive organs with an extremely disinterested teacher gazing off into the distance. When the video says that “the uterus is the centre of female reproductive activity” Andrew turns to Elliot and says “The uterus?

I thought girls had vaginas,” and Nick replies “I thought that too, but I guess they don’t.”

innipeg-based indie sweethearts Animal Teeth released their newest album, A List of Things to Say on Nov. 4.

Their second full-length LP occasionally departs from the shores of pure indie to explore some roots and country waters, while staying close enough for an easy swim back.

Trio Stefan Hodges, Adam Nikkel, and Ian Ellis write gentle, emotional, and at times heavy songs that will tug your heart strings to the tune of bittersweet nostalgia, creating a sense of aging and history behind each song.

Nearly every track on the album is a new release. “Gone Again” came out on the latest version of Beach Station Blues, and “Heart of Darkness” is a cover.

The album opens with “Gone,” and “Gone Again,” which, while

ocal genre-bending experimental jazz fusion group Odd Outfit released their debut full length album Up, Down on Aug. 16 to the delight of fans long awaiting the release of music from the quintet that formed in the summer of 2014.

The band - consisting of Alex Chochinov, guitar; Jorden Hart, trumpet; Graeme Leaver, keys; Karl Manchur, bass; and Adrian Schroeder, drums - have since experimented with expanding their purely instrumental tunes by adding a local female singer, Haita Dana Waldie - to live performances.

She is not featured on the album, but may be included in future shows or an album years from now, further layering the group’s sound.

The album starts off with “Intervention,” with background music that, though mellow, is quite complex, while the trumpet takes the lead with a painfully catchy and soaring melody that is unfortunately very difficult to sing along to. The whole band collaborates

on one of these catchy melodies in “It Will Catch Up With You Too,” while passing off soloing duties from member to member.

Since the album is instrumental, the songs are much more open to interpretation, and the only words present are the titles of the song.

Whirring, distant sounds could be characterized as celestial on the second track guided by the title “Moons Aligned,” where instrumentation comes in and out of focus as if circling in orbit in a slow and soothing song.

Odd Outfit chugs along on a lot of the tunes. Their rhythm section seems to rein in the ever-exploring guitar, trumpet, and keys to a place of consistency, something that creates the required ground in songs like “Blue Flower (Leaving the Cabaret)” where the unwavering bass serves as a parent to the extremely talented children saying “hey mom, look what I can do.” A break in the song featuring only the consistent bass line before the other instrumentation launches back into musical mayhem is a highlight of the album.

Canada's best descend on prairies U SPORTS women's soccer national preview Jason Pchajek, staff

ith the soccer season winding down and conference titles doled out this weekend, it is time for soccer fans to turn their attention toward the U SPORTS National Championship. Bisons fans will have plenty to cheer about, as their team is hosting the 2017 tournament and get a shot at the title. However, they face stiff competition. Below is a breakdown of all the teams attending nationals in Winnipeg from Nov. 9 to 12.

University of Manitoba Bisons

Record: 4-7-3 (Sixth in Canada WestPrairie Division) The host team has a large hill to climb to claim the national title.

Despite a good October, in which the herd went 3-3-1, the club was bogged down by two major winless skids during the season. After snagging their first win of the year, 3-2 against Saskatchewan, the Bisons went 0-4-1 to finish September. Then, after back-to-back clean sheets against Lethbridge and Winnipeg to open October, they went 0-3-1 until their season finale win over Regina.

A major issue for the Bisons will be scoring. The team averaged 1.13 goals per game through the season, good for just eighth in the conference.

Manitoba was held off the scoresheet in seven of 14 games, including four of its seven losses. The Bisons placed eighth in Canada West with a 1.50 team goals against average, something that must be rectified before facing the offensive powerhouses in the coming tournament.

Cape Breton University Capers

Record: 11-0-1 (First in AUS) The first of many undefeated teams, the Cape Breton Capers are perhaps one of the most complete teams taking part in the national championship. They took off running early in the season, rattling off a perfect 10-0-0 record before being kept to a 2-2 draw by Dalhousie in their second-last game of the season.

The Capers are terrifying competition at both ends of the field. The team was never kept off the score sheet, registering a U SPORTS best of 50 goals on the year, including a 9-0 drubbing of the Saint Mary’s Huskies in their regular season finale, two weeks after beating Mount Allison 8-0.

Cape Breton was near perfect at the other end of the field, ranking third nationally, with a 0.33 goals against average. In the regular season, it took until October for a team to put anything in the Capers’ goal, as they outscored opponents 21-0 through the first month of the season. This fact alone should make the Cape Breton Capers the national championship favourites.

Bison basketball teams open up season at home against Regina Men’s basketball earns a split, women remain winless Ryan Stelter, staff

T

he University of Manitoba basketball teams hosted the University of Regina Cougars at the Investors Group Athletic Centre over the weekend. The men’s basketball team split the Cougars by winning Friday but falling just short on Saturday. The women remained winless against the powerhouse Cougars, but put up a good fight in Saturday’s loss.

On Friday, the women fell 85-48 to the second-ranked Cougars, never establishing themselves in the game.

The Cougars came out hard in the first quarter, scoring 23 points. An Emma Thompson three-pointer was the lone points Manitoba got in the first. Thompson finished the night with 15 points to lead the Bisons.

enough to win this game. Charlotte Kot of the Cougars had a field day in the paint, scoring many uncontested layups. Kot finished with 16 points on the night.

Saturday was a better day for the Bison women, and the team put up 21 more points than the night prior in a close 72-69 game. Nicole Konieczny led the way for Manitoba, finishing with 23 points and eight rebounds.

Thompson was close behind, with 21 points and nine rebounds.

Manitoba even manage to lead by

four points in the third quarter, but the Cougars went on a 6-0 run to end the quarter and regain the lead.

The Bisons are now 0-4 and sit in second last in the Canada West.

Men

Friday was a sluggish start for the men against the Cougars, but the team rallied in the second half to come away 83-74 victors. Justus Alleyn had a monster game for Manitoba, playing almost the entire game, scoring 25 points and six rebounds.

“Justus is obviously our guy. He’s going to be a big part of our offence a lot of times,” Bison head coach Kirby Schepp said. “I think he took it upon himself to take over the offence and start being very aggressive.”

Regina held a 44-37 lead at the half, but the Bisons went on a 10-0 run to start the third quarter to gain the lead. A torrential run largely due to the play from Alleyn.

“We didn’t come out [in the first half] with enough intensity,” Alleyn said post game. “Once we turned

up our energy and started talking to each other our defence was 10 times better, we were getting balls all over the place.”

Saturday was a heartbreaker for the Bisons, who fell 89-87. After the Bisons managed to tie the game at 87 late in the fourth, Cougar guard Alex Igual sunk a jumper to give the Cougars their first win of the season.

Alleyn was once again the catalyst for the Bisons, scoring 24 points and three rebounds. James Wagner was not far behind, with 20 points and six rebounds. Four games into the season, both Wagner and Alleyn find themselves amongst some of the best in the Canada West. Alleyn is fourth in the Canada West in points per game, averaging 23.3 a game.

Alleyn is also third in the Canada West in three-point percentage, sinking 63.6 per cent of his attempts, with Wagner in fifth with 60 per cent.

Manitoba is now 3-1 on the year, and hold sole possession of fourth place in the Canada West.

The Bison basketball teams will host the MacEwan University Griffins on Nov. 10-11 at the Investors Group Athletic Centre.

Those lucky enough to make their way to the fall classic find themselves with new challenges and obstacles.

Every game matters, and every team is coming out in full force so that they may etch their name in history.

The Yankees were on an absolute hot streak at this point, showing the baseball world they were more than just a wild card team. The Yanks and Astros were still undefeated at home at this point, and they showed that they were ready to defend home turf.

The Astros took the first two games at home. The Yankees then had the next three games in their confines, and outscored Houston 19-5 while taking all three games to command a 3-2 series lead. The Astros, took the next two games at home and advanced to their first World Series since 2005.

The reigning champions, the Chicago Cubs, looked to defend their crown and potentially go back-toback as World Series champs. With Los Angeles taking the first two games at home and stealing game three at Wrigley Field, outscoring the Cubs 15-4 in that time frame, the Cubs had their backs against the wall.

They showed a bit of life in game four, with Javier Báez snapping his 0-for20 skid at the plate with two solo home runs, contributing to a 3-2 vic-

tory. However, the Dodgers, closed out the series with a monstrous 11-1 win, sealing a date with the Astros in the 2017 World Series.

An anti-climactic game seven had the Astros gain an early five-run lead as they cruised their way to their first ever World Series title World Series

This was the first World Series since 1970 where both teams posted 100-plus win seasons. The Dodgers had the potential to win their first championship since 1988, while the Astros could win their franchise’s first World Series since the team came into the league in 1962. Records were broken in a wild game two.

The Astros took the game 7-6, and became the first World Series team to homer in the ninth, 10th, and 11th inning. Both teams also set a record for most home runs combined in a World Series with eight, and this was the first time in MLB history that five home runs were hit in extra innings. Surely, that was it.

Game five saw two aces go headto-head on the mound, Clayton Kershaw and Dallas Keuchel. It was bound to be a pitching duel, and most likely to be a close game. Except it wasn’t.

The two aces for both teams exited early, and the game once again went

to extra innings. In the bottom of the 10th, with the score knotted at 12 each, Houston had a man on second and Alex Bregman at the plate.

Bregman hit a walk-off single to help the Astros secure a 13-12 victory and a 3-2 series lead in what was a game for the ages. No one had a definite lead, with the game setting a record of six game-tying home runs.

An anti-climactic game seven had the Astros gain an early five-run lead as they cruised to their first ever World Series title.

An extreme disappointment for the Dodgers, and especially for Kershaw, who had always been seen as a non-factor in the postseason. In an interview with USA today, he was quoted as saying, “Maybe one of these days I won’t fail.”

Carlos Beltrán was seen shedding tears of joy, as the man with a 20-year career in the majors had finally won it all. Evan Gattis also showed an emotional side, as the man who once left baseball to battle his inner demons and perform a series of blue-collar jobs was living a dream that once seemed impossible. Carlos Correa, riding high on the emotions of the win, rode those feelings even higher as he proposed to his girlfriend on the field. She said yes, of course.

ood morning, students - or good evening, or good 3 a.m. - whenever the article is being read. Today's lecture is about time. How does time relate to fantasy football? Well, to name a few instances, there are lineup choices that have to be made by a certain time, there are free agent pickup deadlines, and there are time-related injury issues for players. Timing, as they say, is everything.

Daylight savings made me think about time. This is a Captain Obvious thing to say, but the November daylight savings is so much better than the spring one. There's the whole “sleeping in” thing, and the whole "pub is open for an extra hour" thing. Both could be seen as bonuses, depending on your inclinations. Maybe Leonard Fournette, starting running back for the Jacksonville Jaguars, did a little of both? A little too late at the bar and forget to change his clock? Fournette missed the team photo, broke some team rules, thus getting benched, hence ruining thousands of fantasy owner lineups. It's a chain reaction: time affects everyone.
