early 50 protesters are being sued in excess of $500,000 by a Winnipeg developer after the Parker Lands development site was blockaded for nearly two months this summer.

A lawyer for Gem Equites, a Winnipeg based developer owned

by Andrew Marquess, asked the court to add an additional 44 names to a lawsuit initially launched in July, bringing the total number of defendants to 49. The suit is seeking to recover legal fees, security expenses, and costs associated with the delay of the project this summer, according to a CBC News report.

John Danakas, the U of M’s executive director of public affairs, applauded UMSU for their efforts, and reassured students that the university administration remains committed to addressing sexual violence on campus.

Danakas said the university has created relevant programming and survivor-centred policies, including the university’s Sexual Assault Policy, which ensures sexual violence education, prevention, and a response framework to address sexual violence on campus.

Moving forward, Danakas said the university will work closely with the student union, as well as faculty and staff, to discuss campus sexual violence through workshops, dialogues, and relevant programming.

“The university is committed to fulfilling its responsibility to create a safe, supportive, and respectful environment for all members of the universitycommunity,” he said.

“The university is working hard to accomplish this by pursuing initiatives that prioritize the prevention of sexual assault and sexual violence through education, awareness, and building a culture of consent.”

And it occurred to me that perhaps I am promoting it to the very people that are causing the conflict between how I think art is to be appreciated.

There are more than enough events in Winnipeg to fill every day of the week.

Frankly, the arts scene is booming in the city, and the breeding ground for this creativity lies in the heart of downtown - which is why Nuit Blanche happens primarily there.

Incredibly, this year’s event saw approximately 20,000 attendees.

But it’s not all roses: Nuit Blanche has planned to beef up security for next year, and there was an incident this year where someone was pepper sprayed at Old Market Square. There were complaints of people spilling on to streets that were not closed off for pedestrians.

What’s more widespread is the problem of behavior. In order to keep the event a hit, Nuit Blanche should also be investing funds in education for next year’s festival because there are things beyond security concerns that need to be remedied.

The amount of disrespectful behaviour I witnessed at Nuit Blanche this year was at once disappointing and thought-provoking.

There were several damaged works of art at the Winnipeg Art Gallery, one of which has been since replaced.

It was quite emotional to see these works of art ruined and I felt sad for the artist whose expression and work had been violated by people

May Energy East be the last dragon slain in a paradigm that values economy over environment The time for ignoring and externalizing environmental costs is over Mathew Scammell

O

n the morning of Thursday, Oct. 5, TransCanada Corporation made the announcement that the construction of the Energy East pipeline project would not go ahead.

The 4,600 km pipeline would have carried roughly 1.1 million barrels of oil per day from Hardisty, Alta., to Saint John, N.B., making it the biggest proposed pipeline project, larger than both the Trans Mountain and Keystone XL pipelines.

Current projections of increased oil production are in stark contradiction to the federal government’s commitment to reducing Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions in accordance with the Paris Agreement. At what point will growth in the oil sector cease to be a driving economic force in this country? When will wide-scale acceptance of renewable and alternative forms of energy become a reality? These questions have yet to be answered, so there needs to be a concerted and intentional effort on behalf of our federal and provincial governments to end our dependence on the oil industry and economic growth itself.

We cannot continue to push the costs of our current economic wealth onto the backs of future generations - this is not only morally wrong, but also extremely unsustainable Currently, oil is worth less than half of the US $107 per barrel that it was back in 2013 when TransCanada announced the birth of the Energy East project. Economically speaking, it is not a great time to invest in the oil industry, let alone sink billions of dollars into a project that might not have long-term returns. The federal government of Canada has also been pushing this message of economic circumstances, saying there were purely financial and business reasons for the cancellation.

This isn’t the full story, however, since the National Energy Board (NEB) was the agency tasked with overseeing the approval process and it was ultimately for regulatory reasons that TransCanada decided to kibosh the entire controversy-riddled project.

Playing Clue: why the project was abandoned

Plans to build a port in Cacouna, Que., were stalled in 2014 with a court-ordered injunction initiated by environmental groups worried about beluga whale breeding grounds being

affected by its construction. When the NEB was conducting hearings in Montreal in 2016, protestors shut them down. Then there was the Charest affair, which was ultimately the most likely cause of death for the entire project. Two of the three panel members responsible for the environmental review of TransCanada’s application were discovered to have met in secret with Jean Charest, a former Quebec premier who was then working as a consultant for the pipeline company. Once this was exposed, all three members stepped down, as did the NEB chair and vice-chair.

When a new panel was finally chosen, the NEB restarted the review that had been tainted with bias and decided it was no longer enough to only consider the direct emissions from the pipeline itself: they would now factor in both upstream and downstream emissions. Historically, the NEB would only consider direct emissions from a pipeline project: those relating to the actual transportation of the oil itself, such as the emissions generated by a pump.

Upstream emissions include all those involved with the extraction and production process, while downstream emissions are considered the end-use emissions of consumers, such as what comes out of a car’s tailpipe.

Calgary mayor Naheed Nenshi recently said the NEB needs to be more consistent with how it approves energy projects. I agree: the NEB needs to, from now on, consistently advertise that both upstream and downstream environmental impacts will be factored into the decisionmaking process.

Let’s look at an example of why upstream emissions should be included in the environmental impact assessment.

The bitumen contained within the oil sands requires considerably more energy to be extracted and refined than oil from conventional sources.

Using energy return on investment (EROI) as an indicator of overall efficiency, oil sands production has an EROI ratio of roughly 4:1, meaning it takes about one barrel of oil to extract, refine, and produce four barrels. This is pathetic, especially when compared to the EROI of conventional sources of oil, the value being at approximately 18:1. This is why the emissions involved with the extraction and refining process should be included within the environmental impact assessment, since it is directly contributing to the overall emissions associated with the specific project.

Downstream emissions should be calculated as well, since an energy project such as a pipeline will inevitably lead to the release of massive amounts of carbon dioxide, the major culprit in global warming and climate change.

It seems the broadening of the regulatory agency’s considerations is the true reason for TransCanada relinquishing its proposal. It was

One of the biggest misconceptions is the idea that this amendment will take away a citizen’s right to choose whether they donate. This is simply not the case. The amendment includes wording to allow those not comfortable donating their organs to refrain from doing so. The three easy ways in which someone can clearly state their objection to being a donor are through the registry website, through a written document signed by the person who objects and delivered to their physician, or stating the objection orally to at least two witnesses in the time of their last illness.

The amendment will be discussed and debated on Oct. 31, then voted on two days later, on Nov. 2. The festival is curated by sound artist Crys Cole. Cole travels for performance most of the year, and for part of the year is based out of each of Australia, Asia, and Europe.

“It’s an advantageous position for the festival,” Cole said. “I get to see a lot of amazing artists perform and make great connections, and then I try to bring people here for the festival.”

Bindi said she didn’t imagine it would become a public performance, but as time progressed, they started to play small shows for their friends, and then later were invited to play a fundraiser show at aceartinc.

Russ Giesbrecht, who calls himself a sound fan, rather than a music fan, said that he missed the festival while not living in Winnipeg.

“I was away for about seven years in a city that didn’t have anything like this,” he said. “I’m glad to be back

and reconnecting with the festival.”

Giesbrecht attended the whole festival this year. He said his highlight was seeing Annea Lockwood perform on Saturday night.

“This was a piece she developed in the 60s. They just played it. It was on tape, not meant to be performed,” he said.

“After it was over, it was silent. That really got my attention. Everybody really appreciated what they were hearing, and there was no need to applaud. It was almost like this reverence.”

W

innipeg will once again host quirky East Coast experimental pop outfit Mauno, who will be performing Nov. 11 at The Handsome Daughter as they tour in support of their newly released album.

Their sophomore album, Tuning, was released in Canada on Oct. 17, as the band is in the midst of an European tour that includes stops in Germany, France, Denmark, and England.

The last time Mauno came to Winnipeg was Jun. 16 for the third stop of their Canadian tour.

“We’ve been playing and practicing constantly since the last time we were in Winnipeg,” said singer/ guitarist Nick Everett. “We’re just flatly a better band all around.”

The four-piece band formed in 2014 and is named after bassist/vocalist Eliza Niemi’s Finnish grandfather. Since its inception, the band has released two albums with the first, Rough Master, coming out just over a year ago.

In a press release, Mauno described drawing inspiration from the book The Soundscape: Our Sonic Environment and the Tuning of the World, by R. Murray Schafer, their album’s title being derived from the book’s subhead. Everett said that reading the book completely changed the way he moves through the world, and, used sonic relationships to inspire the adventurous quality of the new album which is accentuated with the use of field recordings from home and away in the making of their more mature album.

The album opens with “Or Just,” comprised of a simple strumming accompaniment to an incredibly captivating voice. With haunting qualities and an enchanting falsetto, Everett’s voice creates and compliments layered melodies and harmonies throughout the album. There is a striking similarity between Everett and Radiohead’s Thom Yorke in vocal tone, use of vibrato, and composition.

“Tuning,” is a mash-up of sounds that become less confusing after

listening to the remainder of the album. The tracks following it are host to a variety of misplaced sounds and field recordings that find a comfortable home in the background, isolated in the middle, or at the beginning or end of a song.

Instrumental complexity and melodies twisting across instruments with intricate drumming fits together perfectly in “Hand,” and will absolutely pump you up for the rest of the album, leaving you wondering what comes next. The songs are quite short, with the longest peaking at just over three minutes.

That being said, the songs on the album have somehow achieved a duality of wanting them to never end, to sitting on your hands so you don’t prematurely switch the track. The end of “Hand” loops back to the disarray of the previous song before hopping to something entirely different with a switch-up in lead vocals to bassist Niemi in “Other Bad.” “Pigeon” is a particularly odd song, opening with an orchestra followed by sporadic claps and then launching into a song that is ever-changing from beginning to end. The way the guitar follows the vocal melody, being off only by a hair opens the ear to be particularly attentive before introducing the entire band for a full and captivating sound.

The accessibility of the album is a great transition into more experimental music. There are moments of complexity and intricacies that move in and out of the listener’s focus as they compose very smart and thoughtful music that can be listened to again and again. Their live show is no less impressive, and the live interpretation of their new roster of songs on Tuning is awfully intriguing.

ndigenous artists collaborated live for the first time at the Indigenous Voices Rising concert on Oct. 18 at Circle of Life Thunderbird House.

Musicians Leonard Sumner and Moe Clark facilitated a collaborative show combining genres that ranged from blues to throat singing.

“The intention was thinking about being in a circle, finding ways to help everybody express their gifts and talents and in doing that, finding ways to support one another and back up one another’s voices,” Clark said.

The concert featured DJ Boogey the Beat, producer Peshaanakwut Jeff Kinew, singer-songrwiters waNda wilsoN, Ila Barker, Sonia Eidse, throat singer Nikki Komaksiutiksak, trumpet player Chuck Copenace, and vocalist Rhonda Head. Each performer invited others to join them on the stage during their two to four song sets.

artists and collaborating with them and not even knowing what exactly we were going to be doing at first,” Komaksiutiksak said.

“But then the end product, it was just amazing.”

The day before the concert, the artists met for an afternoon workshop focused on getting their music out.

“The National Arts [Centre] is here in Winnipeg for a couple days,” Komaksiutiksak said. “And they wanted to get local grassroots artists from Manitoba together to talk about the barriers to going out there, exposing yourself and getting gigs.”

Komaksiutiksak, a local throat singer, has been performing for 25 years.

“It’s kind of special, but at the same time it’s like I wish there were more Inuit that lived here and sang,” she said.

The National Arts Centre partnered with Manitoba Music to host the workshop and concert, which

was free to anyone that wanted to attend.

“We want people to be able to hear this music, we want stories to reach people, and I think the best way for them to reach people and in this particular context is to offer a free, all ages event,” Clark said.

Barker and Copenace agreed on the importance of hosting free events in the community.

“Especially to present a wide variety of indigenous artists that are out there, maybe ones that many people maybe haven’t heard of and mixing that with people that everyone has heard of,” Copenace said.

Though the genres varied, a number of songs dealt with political and personal experiences. Head performed her song “500 Years,” which deals with colonization and residential schools.

Barker recently graduated with an undergraduate degree in conflict resolution. She relates her music to a class she took called “Non-violent Social Change” that opened her to forms of protest besides rallies or pickets.

“There’s a fire in me to invoke change, and it took me a long time to realize that I could do that just by doing what I love, which is music,” she said.

Barker said collaborative, “festival workshop” style shows are her favourite.

“I like to do that as much as possible because it creates a one-time experience for the audience and for the artists,” she said. “And it’s something you will literally never experience again.”

C

aitlin Fyten will return as the captain and Alanna Sharman, Alana Serhan, and Erica Rieder will be alternates for the University of Manitoba women’s hockey team this season. Bison Sports made the announcement at a press conference held on Oct. 12.

Fyten will remain as the team’s captain for her final year as a Bison, and her second time wearing the 'C.' Fellow defender Rieder will don the ‘A’ for the third time in her Bison career, with one final year of eligibility left after this season. Sharman and Serhan will both wear an ‘A’ but alternate, one during road games and the other at home. Serhan is in her fifth year with the University of Manitoba,

while Sharman is in her third.

The four women were quick to point out the depth of leadership throughout the team.

“I think back to when I was a first year, not necessarily saying that the leadership wasn’t there, it was just a very veteran group,” Serhan said.

“Relationships with the younger girls didn’t seem like it was a priority. Now having roles reversed we see the rookies coming in, I feel it’s super important to always keep them involved.”

Hailing from Porcupine Plain, Sask., Serhan has been with the Bisons since the 2013-14 season. She has tallied 66 points - 31 goals and 35 assists - in 113 games for the herd. So

Bison volleyball splits weekend against Bobcats Ryan Stelter, staff

T

he University of Manitoba volleyball teams opened up their seasons at home against the Brandon University Bobcats this weekend.

Both the men and women split their two-game series against the Bobcats.

Women

After a couple of years mired in obscurity, the Bison women’s volleyball team looks primed for a playoff appearance this season. The return of Brittany Habing and Emily Erickson certainly help in this regard, and the Bisons looked good this weekend.

On Friday, the Bisons came out swinging, dropping the Bobcats in three straight sets. Second year right side hitter Kearley Abbott lead the herd with 11 kills, with fourth year left side hitter Tori Studler close behind smacking home 10 of her own.

Saturday shaped up a bit differently for the hometown herd, with the Bobcats clawing back and winning a close 3-2 match. Studler and Abbott led the Bisons in the kill department once again, smacking home 16 and 15, respectively. Cassie Bujan came up with a court-best 22 digs on the night. Two games in, Bujan is tied for third in the Canada West conference with 30 digs.

Manitoba will be looking to make a jump to first place on the road on Oct. 27-28 against the Calgary Dinos, who have only lost one set of the young season.

Men

With a plethora of veterans leaving the Bisons this year, there are going to be some miscues and slip-ups, as seen this weekend against Brandon.

Head coach Garth Pischke has his work cut out for him this season with plenty of rookies on the roster for Manitoba.

Friday’s performance was indicative of what the Bisons team of last year was capable of, with the herd beating the Bobcats in three

straight sets. Manitoba managed to win the first two extended sets, and won a close third set 25-23. Adam DeJonckheere had 16 kills on the night, better than anyone on the court. DeJonckheere also came up with seven digs, tied for a Bison best.

The women’s hockey team played a two-game series against the University of Saskatchewan Huskies, earning a split. The Bison soccer team also earned a split, beating the University of Regina Cougars after falling to the Huskies.

In Saskatoon on Saturday, the

Huskies jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first half, with Florin Wagner answering for Manitoba seconds after the Huskies' second goal. The Huskies exploded for five goals in the second half. Hailey Lavarias scored her sixth and seventh goals in the second half for Manitoba in the 6-3 loss.

On Sunday against the Cougars, the Bisons snapped their three-game losing streak with a 1-0 win. Wagner scored her seventh of the season just before the end of the first half. Justina Jarmoszko earned the clean sheet making seven saves.

Manitoba finishes the regular season in the sixth and final playoff spot with a 4-7-3 record. Jarmoszko finished the regular season with the second most saves in the Canada West, with 86.

The Bisons will be back in

Saskatoon next weekend to play the Huskies in the first round of the playoffs. No matter how the herd fares in the Canada West playoffs, they will be hosting the U SPORTS National Championships on Nov. 9-12.

Women’s hockey split in Saskatchewan

The women’s hockey team closed their tough opening three weeks of the season this weekend. The herd battled hard against the Huskies to split another weekend pair.

Lauren Taraschuk made her second start for the Bisons on Friday, making 20 saves in a tight 1-0 loss.

Huskies defender Leah Bohlken scored the lone goal in the second, rifling a shot through a crowd and past Taraschuk. The Bisons battled back with a flurry of chances in

the final minutes of the game, but Huskies goaltender Chloe Marshall stood tall for the shutout win.

The Bisons will be back in Saskatoon next weekend to play the Huskies in the first round of the playoffs The Saturday matchup was more back and forth, with the Bisons taking the game 3-2. I

t’s not everyday a coach’s recruiting class includes two former national champions.

But that is the case for the University of Manitoba women’s volleyball head coach Ken Bentley, who welcomes back Brittany Habing and Emily Erickson.

Both Habing and Erickson were a part of Manitoba’s national championship winning team in 2014.

After taking a couple years off, Erickson is recharged and is ready to win another championship.

“I’ve never felt so driven in my life.

When I first left I thought I couldn’t do it again just because of how burnt

out I was,” she said. “I just feel that break has done everything for me, it’s made me come back with a brand new passion for the sport.”

With her time off, Habing has been able to reflect on the national championship winning season, and is excited to bring that experience to this year’s Bison team.

“You take for granted just how cool it was,” she said. “So looking back now and even talking with some of the girls and them asking how it was, or what is involved. It’s super cool to have that under my belt and bring that forward with the team […] that

ell, students, we've reached the halfway point of the fantasy football regular season. Time flies, doesn't it? And just like midterm exams, today's article focuses on midterm fantasy reports. You may have a few A-pluses on your team, but you also may have a few failing grades.

Unfortunately, there is no VW date in fantasy. I mean, you can drop out of your league, but that would be a total jerk move. Like, Ph.D. level jerk move.

Here are some random midterm thoughts:
