As Perry Como noted, way back in 1951, ‘It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas!’

With sparkling lights adorning all corners of Manilva, it is a time for our local businesses to shine. This period is really important for all the businesses in the area and an amazing opportunity for residents and visitors to invest in them.

A FITTING FAREWELL

The Morning Man and because we only drink on Monday's, The Monday Man for seven days a week. With a Happy Easter at Christmas & Merry Christmas at Easter, Mike had an infectious laugh that could be heard across all of Manilva, a place that our favourite man with the Hawaiian shirts was proud to call home. Mike was one of the nicest people you could ever wish to meet and he was loved by so many of us, which is why over 300 people turned up to say goodbye to him on the beach in front of Miel and then afterwards at O’Callaghan’s. He would do anything for anybody without ever thinking twice about himself.

Although he never gave me the Hawaiian shirt off his back (probably because I never asked him and more probable, that it wouldn't fit), he often gave me a shot or two out of his very own bottle of Smirnoff. So much could be said about Mike, enough to fill pages and pages if everybody who knew him were to contribute. But for me, it's his bear hugs that I'm going to miss the most. Mike was a character and a half, a good friend, a good man and a man who deeply loved everybody that crossed his path.

And even more so, he had a special few where that love reached deeper, like his daughter Kiana Batens, his sister, Mascha Van Noorden, his cousin Ivo Van Noorden and last but not least, his partner in crime for so many years Cathy Abbo. Mike you are going to be so missed by all of us that were lucky enough to meet you and call you a friend.

Sending you a big Hawaiian shirt bear hug from us all.

The Morning Man y porque solo bebemos los lunes, The Monday Man durante los siete días de la semana.

Con Felices Pascuas en Navidad y Feliz Navidad en Pascua, Mike tenía una risa contagiosa que se podía escuchar en todo Manilva, un lugar que nuestro hombre favorito con las camisas hawaianas se enorgullecía de llamar hogar.

Mike era una de las personas más amables que podrías desear conocer y muchos de nosotros lo queríamos, razón por la cual más de 300 personas acudieron a despedirse de él en la playa frente a Miel y luego en O'Callaghan's.

Haría cualquier cosa por cualquiera sin pensarlo dos veces en sí mismo. Aunque nunca me dio la camisa hawaiana que llevaba puesta (probablemente porque nunca se lo pedí y, más probablemente, porque no me quedaba), a menudo me daba un trago o dos de su propia botella de Smirnoff.

Se podría decir mucho sobre Mike, lo suficiente como para llenar páginas y páginas si todos los que lo conocieron contribuyeran.

Pero para mí, son sus abrazos de oso los que más voy a extrañar.

Mike era un personaje y medio, un buen amigo, un buen hombre y un hombre que amaba profundamente a todos los que se cruzaban en su camino.

Y más aún, tuvo unos pocos especiales en los que ese amor llegó más profundo, como su hija Kiana Batens, su hermana Mascha Van Noorden, su primo Ivo Van Noorden y, por último, pero no menos importante, su compañera de crimen durante tantos años Cathy Abbo.

Mike, todos los que tuvimos la suerte de conocerte y llamarte amigo te extrañaremos mucho.

A sky full of wonder

In the modern world of mobile devices and the never ending battle of not stepping in poop, you can be forgiven for not looking skywards. Well you're missing out. The trees in Manilva are alive with feathered friends, just waiting to be discovered. Our eagle-eyed snapper, Peter Whitham, takes a walk about Manilva to discover just some of the amazing species that come to visit or call this wonderful area home.

Irecently discovered the sports and exercise facilities pro vided by the council of Manilva. What impressed me the most were the scope and range on offer for those who are 65 or over.

If, like me, you have the green ‘Sesenta Cinco’ card (the one that entitles you to 50% off all buses in Andalucia), you can take advantage of gym and exercise classes at greatly reduced rates.

One class is 0 euros per year!

This issue we turn our lens toward the incredible talents of Manilva photographer Jayne Turner.

A native of Sheffield, England, Jayne Turner has had a life-long passion for photography.

Although born and raised in Sheffield, Jayne is fiercely proud of her Welsh heritage on her mother’s side of the family.

Having travelled extensively in Europe, North America and Africa she has a wide catalogue of work featuring wildlife, nature, architecture and landscapes.

Following a relocation to Puerto de la Duquesa, Manilva in 2020, Jayne has revelled in the rich pageant of architecture and landscapes in the vibrant colours and lighting of Andalusia, reflected in the variety of her recent work.

All of Jayne’s work is photographed using a Nikon D3300 camera, and is completely untouched and unedited, allowing the natural talent of the photographer and the beauty of the subject matter to shine through.

All work is available in a variety of sizes, framed, board mounted or on canvas.

The gallery is located in Locale 1E on Avenida de la Paz in Sabinillas.

En este edición dirigimos nuestro objetivo hacia el increíble talento de la fotógrafa de Manilva Jayne Turner.

Jayne Turner es nativa de Sheffield, Inglaterra y ha tenido una pasión por la fotografía de toda la vida. Aunque nació y se crió en Sheffield, Jayne está ferozmente orgullosa de su herencia galesa por parte de la familia de su madre.

Después de haber viajado extensamente por Europa, América del Norte y África, tiene un amplio catálogo de trabajos sobre vida silvestre, naturaleza, arquitectura y paisajes.

Luego de mudarse a Puerto de la Duquesa, Manilva en 2020, Jayne se ha deleitado con el rico desfile de arquitectura y paisajes en los colores vibrantes y la iluminación de Andalucía, reflejada en la variedad de su trabajo reciente.

Todo el trabajo de Jayne está fotografiado con una cámara Nikon D3300, y está completamente intacto y sin editar, lo que permite que brille el talento natural del fotógrafo y la belleza del tema.

Following on from Natalie White last issue, we introduce another star of the new series of Channel 5’s, Bargain Loving Brits In The Sun. Triple threat, Jordanne Morris is another regular to the Manilva area. Be it in the guise of a painter, party entertainer or furniture upcycler.

Jordanne runs 3 successful businesses, Made to measure art, Marbella party central and the wonderfully named Useless old tart. You may have seen the local Entrepreneur at the local Christmas Markets with her Made to measure hat on over the festive period. She is famous for her ocean wave resin art designs, which can be found on cheeseboards, trays, coasters as well as big wall art designs.

You might have even caught her locally setting up Christmas tents for a party (pictured far right).

Casares Costa has also had the pleasure of seeing some of Jordanne’s recycled furniture magic. With some expert skill, she has brought these fantastic pieces (pictured right) back to life and ready for a new home.

Charity this Christmas

Due to disastrous management by our governments, poverty, mental illness and homelessness are on the increase.

It is pointless to look for solutions from our governments, multi-national organisations or billionaire false prophets who make you believe that they have humanity at heart, because they don't.

It's not even about money for them anymore, it's all about power and control on a worldwide scale and your gender, religious views, colour, culture or nationality now and for a long time appear to be irrelevant. Because of this, I urge you to look closer to home this Christmas when thinking of charity. Since the destruction caused by the pandemic and the over reaching consequences of it, vast amounts of people have lost not only loved ones but also their jobs or businesses and all have been added to the already alarming long list of people in need. Embarrassment will have many of these suffering in silence and they could be living on the same street as you or maybe even next door? Some may only need someone to talk to whilst others may need help with getting food or finding a job. Please find a way to engage with your neighbours and find out if they have a need that you might be able to help them with because after all, modern day Christmas shouldn't just be a time for giving gifts to family and friends and going to church for that once a year absolution, it should also be for thinking about and genuinely helping others in need.

Caridad esta Navidad

Debido a la gestión desastrosa de nuestros gobiernos, la pobreza, las enfermedades mentales y la falta de vivienda van en aumento. No tiene sentido buscar soluciones de nuestros gobiernos, organizaciones multinacionales o falsos profetas multibillonarios que te hacen creer que tienen a la humanidad en el corazón, porque no es así.

Ya ni siquiera se trata de dinero para ellos, se trata de poder y control a escala mundial y su género, su religioson, color, cultura o nacionalidad ya desde hace mucho tiempo parecen ser irrelevantes. Por eso, los exhorto a mirar más cerca de casa esta Navidad cuando piensen en la caridad. Desde la destrucción causada por la pandemia y las consecuencias de gran alcance de la misma, una gran cantidad de personas han perdido no solo a sus seres queridos sino también a su empleo o negocio, ya todos se han agregado a la larga y alarmante listas de personas con necesidad. La vergüenza tendrá a muchos de estos sufriendo en silencio y podrían estar viviendo en la misma calle que usted o tal vez incluso es tu vecino? Es posible que algunos solo necesiten a alguien con quien hablar, mientras que otros pueden necesitar ayuda para conseguir comida o encontrar un empleo. Encuentre un manera que sea para relacionarse con tus vecinos y averigüe si tienen una necesidad con la que pueda ayudarlos porque, después de todo, la Navidad moderna no debería ser un momento para dar regalos a familiares y amigos e ir a iglesia para esa absolución una vez al año, también debe ser para pensar y ayudar genuinamente a otros en necesidad.

Charity Event Afesol - Mental Health Association of the Costa del Sol

Galeria 151 in Estepona, hosted a 2 week long exhibition in coordination with with AFESOL - The Mental Health Association of the Costa del Sol to raise funds for their new Centre in Seghers in Estepona. The patients made and decorated fish of various sizes and colours with guidance and supervision by José Miguel Andrés

Gutiérrez and

these were then displayed in the gallery and made available for sale.

Prior to the opening a “Collective Botanical Mandala” based on works and guided by Louise Gale, was created by visitors and clients of Galeria 151, which was up for Auction during the Exhibition. The Event raised €1000 that will go towards refurbishments of the day centre in Estepona. The aim of AFESOL is to help Mental Health Patients and their Families along the Costa Del Sol.

Breast Cancer Charity Event in cooperation with 'Cerveza Mudita' & 'Bandera Rosa'

During the month of October Galeria 151 in Estepona, were selling raffle tickets for their first Breast Cancer Charity Event, which took place on Thursday the 27th of October.

In addition to the raffle, games were set up in order to raise cash towards the investigation of Breast Cancer, hoping a cure to this terrible desease can be found soon!

With the collaboration of 'Cerveza Mudita' and 'Bandera Rosa', the event was a great success. Special Guest on the day, Fernando Quirós,

from El Puerto de Santa Maria, set up canvas with Tunas drawn on, participants then coloured them.

They were then donated to the wonderful ladies of 'Bandera Rosa', for an upcoming auction.

Fernando is also the Artist behind the label of 'Cerveza Mudita' and one of the resident Artists at Galeria 151.

ON THE BUSES

Below are the details of the local bus service, that you can utilise to get all over Manilva. A really handy service that really helps local community mobility and connects the whole area. With the added bonus of reducing congestion, parking issues and emissions. We strongly encourage it’s use to ensure that it remains a success and that it continues in the future.

Please be aware that the service only runs Monday to Friday. First bus of the day leaves at 07:30 and the last departure is at 19:05

CENTRO MEDICO

Departing from the Manilva Health Centre, the bus passes through the CIVIMA and continues on to Sabinillas, stopping at Bernardo Munoz, the Guardia Civil Barracks and then on to El Hacho, Hotel Golf, Los Hidalgos, Hacienda Guadalupe, Aldea Hills, Playa Paraiso, Aldea Beach, San Rafael, Manilva Beach, Los Granados, El Castillo, Puerto, La Colonia, Carrefour Express, Lidl and finally the Repsol petrol station. Circling back up the hill to start the route again. The ticket price per journey is €1.25 and pensioners get a reduced rate of €0.75.

In a building that many of you will remember from its days as the Saint George charity boutique. A truly fantastic renovation has taken place.

Last month, Mimosa hair and beauty held a grand opening of its newly developed salon.

The wonderfully talented, Peter Whitham, took his camera along to document the occasion.

The Belgian beautician and owner, Robine (pictured above), welcomed some very lucky customers to celebrate the day with her.

The opening was a great success, made evident by the happy faces in the pictures. We are sure the goodie bags helped to make the smiles last even longer. Mimosa offers manicure treatments, pedicures, waxing and facials. The shop also offers a range of goods and gifts, even stocking some ideas for Christmas. Amazingly, services and treatments are offered in 4 languages (English, Spanish, Dutch and French). So there really is no reason not to pop by and get yourself pampered for the festive season.
