Mamaroneck Village’s new mayor: Sharon Torres By Seamus Higgins

DIVISIONAL SHOWDOWN! Tatsu Homma wrestles against a White Plains opponent at Mamaroneck High School. This weekend, Homma and his Tiger teammates will be competing at the Section 1 Championship Tournament at the Westchester County Center. For story, see page 16.

County passes affordable housing land acquisition acts Joined by members of the Westchester County Board of Legislators, Westchester County Executive George Latimer signed Land Acquisition Acts that allocate $2,700,000 for the purchase of land in Yonkers, and $3,000,000 for the purchase of land in the village of Ossining for the construction of affordable housing. Both properties will be marketed and leased to residents ages 62 years and older. The Yonkers property will offer 94 affordable housing units for seniors earning at or below 30% of the area median income, and the Ossining property will provide 74 units for seniors earning at or below 40% of the area median income. The Land Acquisition Acts are the first pieces of legislation Latimer will sign in 2024, proving that furthering fair housing throughout Westchester remains a primary focus. Latimer said: “Our responsibility as a County government is to make sure that the opportunity for affordable housing is always there. Having access to decent

housing is a basic, human right, and homes need to remain at a price point that all people can afford. This legislation is about filling a critical need that people have across our County, and when we allocate significant funding towards the construction of affordable units, we are helping to improve the quality of life for many of our residents and families.” County NHLA funding is being used to fund a portion of the acquisition costs related to three privately owned parcels in Yonkers. County funds will be utilized to fund a portion of the acquisition costs in Ossining, excluding the value of the non-residential commercial space. The project also received $995,000 in sales tax benefits from the Westchester County IDA. Since Latimer first took office in 2018, the availability of affordable housing has remained a top priority. Six years into Latimer’s administration, more than 5,599 units of affordable housing have been built, gone under construction, or are in the pipeline for the future.

Commissioner of the Westchester County Department of Planning Blanca Lopez said: “As 2020 Census data shows that seniors represent the fastest growing cohort in Westchester County, the Department of Planning fully supports the County Executive’s continued commitment to invest in the development of senior housing throughout the County.” Board Chair Vedat Gashi said: “Words are powerful when actions follow. It’s appropriate that these are the first items we take up in our first legislative session. These actions today reflect the concrete steps that the BOL is taking to provide more affordable housing in Westchester. Residents in Westchester – particularly seniors– suffer from a lack of affordable housing. This is a step to bring relief to our seniors. I want to thank our partners on the state level, municipalities, my fellow Legislators and County Executive George Latimer. We will do whatever we can to help seniors and all residents of Westchester County.”

The village of Mamaroneck has a new mayor. In November, Sharon Torres — running as an independent — won the seat, beating incumbent Tom Murphy, who had served as mayor for the past three terms. Campaigning from August through Election Day, Nov. 7, Torres made history as the fourth woman and first of Hispanic descent to serve as mayor of Mamaroneck. Torres has an interesting history and unusual road to becoming mayor of Mamaroneck. She graduated with a Bachelors of Science from Farmingdale State College and received her MBA from Pace University, Lubin School of Business. Torres’ background before entering the political sphere was in human resources, also including 10 years of experience in accounting. Torres decided to run for mayor because as she was volunteering she noticed a divisiveness in the village. People were saying that they missed the moniker of Mamaroneck as the “friendly village” and things were starting to get negative. She felt she could change the way people view the Board of Trustees, the village’s governing legislative body. “We can be more inviting, I think we can make policy by listening to people and bringing them into the conversation,” she said. “I don’t wanna legislate for people, I wanna legislate with them.” She mentioned in her work in HR and social work they had a phrase which she called “Never about you without you.” Why she ultimately decided to run for political office was the goal

of having a community based feeling within the Board of Trustees. The balance to work her fulltime job and campaign was tricky at first, but she said her campaign was completely volunteered, they were passionate and helped out where she couldn’t be. Torres credited her volunteers with helping spearhead her campaign. Spending time on social media provided another way to campaign. Not only was she able to post when and where she was campaigning, but to hear Mamaroneck residents’ feedback and what they want for the village was also illuminating. Torres mentioned that social media allows all residents from different parts of Mamaroneck to speak out, lend their voice and be heard. “I tried my very best to use it [social media} to meet and greet people,” she said. Part of being mayor for Torres is about being a public servant. She felt while there can be a negative connotation with it, she leans on the public servant side. “Tax dollars that run this village come from those residents, they have a voice. We should have a space where we are listening and feel respected,” Torres said. Torres’ focus is projects regarding housing, pedestrian safety and flooding. The mayor mentioned how whatever decision is made she asks, “Does this make the situation … better?” On being the first person of color and fourth woman to be installed as mayor in Mamaroneck, Torres said, “Representation matters. I hope being the fourth female, first Hispanic — where we have a 24% Hispanic population — that more women want to step up and do these things. Because I think we need that.”

Rye residents named to Open Door Foundation Board Rye residents Kim O’Connor and Chiann Roveto have been named to Open Door Family Medical Center’s Foundation Board. O’Connor, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Rye resident since 2001, has actively participated in the community for many years, promoting youth and family wellbeing by volunteering for various local organizations. She has worked for more than 30 years with children and adults in a variety of settings, and presently operates M. Kim O’Connor & Associates in Rye. A native of the Washington D.C. area, O’Connor is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She completed her graduate school work at the University of Maryland and NYU, where she taught in its School of Social Work. Roveto, an active member of various volunteer organizations serving the Rye and Westchester communities, has served since 2019 as Board Chair for the Junior Board for Family Services of Westchester (FSW), which provides fundraising, donor engagement and volunteer activities to support the work of the not-for-profit organization whose mental health and social service programs help families, children and individuals at every stage of their lives. She has also been actively involved since 2016 with the Meals on Wheels program, delivering meals to the elderly in the Rye community. Roveto grew up in Portland, Maine, and lived in Atlanta before moving to Rye 15 years ago. A graduate of Georgia State College, with a degree in sociology, she has worked in various capacities – counseling, programming, fundraising – at non-profit

organizations that provide crisis counseling for underserved women. “Both Kim and Chiann have impacted the lives of so many people over the years,” said Lindsay Farrell, President and CEO of Open Door. “We feel extremely fortunate to have them on our Foundation Board, where they will continue to serve the community for years to come.” O’Connor said she first became aware of Open Door years ago as an active member of Rye Presbyterian Church, which has long partnered with Open Door on its Baby Bundle program. The program provides prenatal patients with newborn necessities and information about resources available in the community. Open Door midwives deliver over 400 babies a year, a majority of whom live at or below the federal poverty level and struggle with inadequate housing, food insecurity, low levels of health literacy, and cultural/language barriers. “As a mental health clinician, who is particularly interested in the health of women and children, I know how difficult it is to deliver quality health care, to make it accessible and available for everyone in the community who needs it,” she said. “I’ve come to appreciate all that Open Door does on the front end in cultivating relationships with its clientele, and on the backend, behind the curtain, with its advocacy on the local, county, state and federal levels. It has a unique position in being the voice of those who desperately need that voice.” According to Roveto, “I’ve wanted to give back to the community by working with this same population – many with low incomes, a lack of

resources, often recent immigrants, who are faced with devastating crises. I’ve seen from personal experience, how Open Door and FSW have helped their patients – many of whom lack medical insurance and don’t know where to turn – navigate the ins and outs of both the health and school systems.” For over 50 years, Open Door has provided accessible, high-quality health care and wellness services, regardless of a patient’s ability to pay. Open

Door offers family medicine, dental services, behavioral health care, women’s health including obstetrics, vision services, insurance enrollment assistance, and much more. Open Door operates health centers in Ossining, Brewster, Mamaroneck, Mount Kisco, Sleepy Hollow, and Port Chester, and a dental site in Saugerties. Additionally, Open Door runs a mobile dental van and nine School-Based Health Centers in the Ossining, Port Chester, and Webutuck school districts.

Another “Super” Sunday Call me a stick in the mud, but I just don’t get as excited about the Super Bowl as I used to. On Sunday evening, the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers will square off in Super Bowl LVIII, the biggest sporting— and television—event of the year, and despite the fact that I think it’s bound to be a good one, I just can’t bring myself to care. Because in the end, Super Bowl Sunday has become less about crowning an NFL Champion and become more about serving as a weird funhouse mirror of the society in which we live. I get it, the “spectacle” has always been a part of the Super Bowl, at least since I’ve been alive.

But a little spectacle goes a long way, at least for me. I don’t need halftime stars parachuting onto the 50-yard-line from low-orbit satellites, I don’t need 12 musical acts fighting for space on the stage to capture the nostalgia crowd by singing 20 seconds of a hit from 1997. And I don’t need a six hour telecast to tell the story of a game that might feature 28 minutes of actual “in-game” action. I didn’t even used to have a problem with the heavy commercialization surrounding the game. But now I’m wary of the way corporations are using the Super Bowl ads to inundate with new marketing campaigns well before kickoff. Companies used to pour their creative and financial backing into creating Super Bowl ads that would spark discussion, for better or worse. The day after the game, people would break down which

ones worked, which didn’t, which celebs made surprise turns as Doritos pitch men. But now, these advertisements pop up online weeks ahead of their air date, sparking—what I assume is bot-driven—discussion on social media pages, rendering the actual spots ineffective and incapable of eliciting an actual reaction from viewers. It’s yet another reminder of how bloated and gross this entire affair has become. Corporations are so intent on manufacturing a big moment that these overly-engineered and think-tank researched ad buys end up falling flat. As for the game itself? Who knows? Could be a classic, could be a dud. That’s the kind of risk you take with Super Bowls. But the excessive pomp and circumstance only serves to highlight the failings of a bad game while taking

Super Bowl LVIII will be another long, bloated slog, no matter how good the game is. But Sports Editor Mike Smith will still be tuning in.

away from games that would live on in the annals of sporting history without the excess bells and whistles. And yet, people will still tune in— at least while the games are still on network television—and no lessons will be learned.

And for all my griping, I’ll be just another one of the sheep blindly counting down ‘till kickoff. After all, it’s not like there’s anything better on the tube. Follow Mike on Twitter @LiveMike_Sports

Sectional qualifiers gear up for County Center By MIKE SMITH Sports Editor

This weekend, the top wrestlers in the area will be hitting the mat, squaring off against each other at the Section 1 Championships on Feb. 10-11. But while the annual event has long been a staple of the high school wrestling schedule, this year is proving to be a little bit different. For the first time ever, the two-day event will not be held in a high school gymnasium, but the historic Westchester County Center. On Monday, Feb. 5, Southern Westchester BOCES officially announced that the White Plains venue would play host to the 2024 wrestling championships, serving as the home of both the Division I and Division II tournaments this weekend. “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to expand upon our partnership with Westchester County Parks & Recreation,” said Todd Santabarbara, the Executive Director of Section One. “This is an exciting opportunity for Section 1 wrestlers. Being able to bring our wrestling championships to the County Center is just another example of our commitment to enhancing the championship experience. Providing student- athletes, coaches

and school communities with high-quality championship experiences continues to be a major priority for our organization.* The weekend will kick off with the preliminary rounds of the Division I (larger school) tournament at 8:45 a.m. on Saturday. That afternoon, beginning at roughly 2:30 p.m., Division II wrestlers will take center stage, wrestling the entirety of their tournament and crowning champions in the evening. Division I wrestlers will be back in action at 10:15 a.m. on Sunday, with the culmination of the tournament beginning with the semifinal-round matches. With solid performances at the Feb. 3 sectional-qualifier tournaments, a number of local wrestlers will get the chance to compete at the County Center. New Rochelle—which wrestled at the Suffern qualifier—is sending six grapplers to the Section 1 Championship Tournament, including Fotis Koufalis and Josue Aguilar, who won the 101 and 108 brackets respectively. Eastchester/Tuckahoe qualified four wrestlers, led by Joe Roche who won at 215 pounds. Harrison had a pair of third-place finishers in Sienna Cozzali (101) and Mark Anthony Giordano

Mamaroneck will be sending six wrestlers, including a pair of brothers wrestling in the lower-weight classes, as Nobu and Tatsu Homma will represent the Tigers at 101 and 108 pounds. Jamie Block, the Director of Athletics for the Chappaqua School District and current Section 1 Wrestling Co-Chair believes the two day event will be an eye-opener for the section’s student-athletes. “I am extremely excited for Section 1 wrestlers to have the opportunity to compete in this historic venue,” said Block.”I really just want the kids to walk in and go, ‘Wow!” Contact: sports@hometwn.com
