s our long, hot summer has ended, but the cooler months provide beautiful settings for a wedding. Vibrant colours, deep, rich red and greens, crisp, fresh whites and silvers add a glowing warmth to weddings which the summer months cannot match. And for our last issue of 2021 we’ve decided to highlight some the differences 2020 and this year have made to how we plan and stage weddings. We’ve found couples faced challenges which meant rethinking how weddings had always been celebrated, and focusing on just what was really important to them.

'TIS THE SEASON TO GET MARRIED

A lot of good has come from a growing feeling and acceptance that weddings are for, and should reflect, the couple – their beliefs and sentiments; and that this can be done in beautiful and amazing ways. Ways that embrace eco ideas and natural settings, themes that couples relate to personally, without sticking to what is expected. It may shock the odd elderly aunt, or not be ‘grand’ enough for certain cousins but a couple whose day says everything they want it to say, and who are relaxed and loving every minute of it, will have the happiest start to married life they could wish for. So we’re saying ‘vive le difference’ with a fashion shoot featuring four beautiful dresses which are totally different from one another, held in Heritage Malta’s stunning MUŻA. And, if it’s hard to imagine an arts museum as a wedding venue this will surely change your mind. We’re also focusing on the value of our own resources, because our islands’ artisans and companies can often provide a service that is far more personal and less stressful than those you find online. And we have a lovely idea for couples who would like a way to share some of the happiness their wedding brings with others.

“No winter is ever too cold if you have enough love.” - Unknown

If you’re planning a wedding, now or in the foreseeable future, it’s possible you may yet face some difficulties. But if anything, this will still result in the wedding you always dreamt of; especially as I DO will be here with help and inspiration. Then, when the celebrations are over you can share your experiences on our wedding stories pages.

ADVICE

MAKING A HEALTHY START

COUPLES FIND PEACE OF MIND AND AN UNDERSTANDING OF DIFFERENT HEALTH ISSUES BY GETTING A CLEAR AND COMPLETE PICTURE OF THEIR STATE OF HEALTH BEFORE THEIR WEDDING.

Y

ou probably already know if there is a history of certain illnesses in your families, or what allergies you may have. These things come up quite naturally as couples get to know each other so by the time you name the day you’ll have a pretty comprehensive idea of how fit you both are. All the same, it is wise to book a general check up at least three months before the wedding day to update your medical history and ensure that any possible unknown conditions are identified and dealt with.

Plan your screening ◊ First, decide if you want your consultations as a couple or separately, do your research and book your consultation and screening with a doctor or clinic that you trust. Then you will be well equipped to plan your married lives accordingly. Your blood pressure, cholesterol counts, body mass index and any number of conditions really do affect not only whether you reach your wedding day fully fit or totally exhausted, but your state of health in the future.

And, don’t think screening for infectious diseases or genetic conditions is a waste of time because it is not. The point is none of us can be 100% sure of our family history, health wise. There are illnesses we may be unaware we are prone to or even might be carrying, which need to be identified. Holding these consultations, either separately or as a couple, will prove you are mature and responsible enough to spend the rest of your lives together. They are as important as any other investment you make for your future. And they are an insurance that you are entering married life prepared, as well as you can ever be, for what lies ahead.

6 I DO

◊ Discuss how you think you would handle any unforeseen information that may arise from your consultations. Knowing that you have each other’s support will help you prepare any questions you have.

◊ When taking part in any premarital medical appointments you need to focus on your ages, family histories, blood groups and current physical and psychological health.

◊ Make a list of your concerns or questions in advance, and make notes of the information you receive. It’s easy to think you will remember everything you discuss, but nine out of ten people end up having doubts about the exact details of some of the information or instructions they receive.

◊ Be prepared for what you might think are very personal or seemingly irrelevant questions. It may seem surprising how different events in your medical history can link up to affect your current state of health, but that’s how it works. And don’t be tempted to edit your answers on subjects like smoking or vaping, diet, drink and drugs, or your sex lives. Everything you say is totally confidential and leaving out ‘the past’ or what you think doesn’t really matter could be a big mistake. You are not being judged and your openness will be respected.

◊ Finely, follow through on any tests you are advised to have, especially if there are certain conditions that run in your family. By acting now you are laying the grounds for your future health and that of the family you may have – a sure way to a happy, healthy marriage.

Meet our

model

THE BRIDES ON OUR POPULAR BRIDAL FASHION PAGES PLAY A VERY IMPORTANT PART IN EACH ISSUE OF IDO. SO WE THINK THEY DESERVE A PAGE TO SHARE SOME OF THEIR THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS ABOUT THIS AND THAT.

Our model is Naomi Galea, and she has a wide range of interests. WHERE DO Y OU LIVE? I live in the picturesque village of Xagħra in Gozo. Xagħra is renowned for its historic places among which are the Ġigantija temples and Ta’ Kola Windmill, and for the good restaurants. WHERE ELSE WOULD Y OU LIKE TO LIVE AND WHY ? Another country I would like to live in is Italy. I love Italy. Every time I visit I’m enchanted by the magnificent natural landscape, and I’m always impressed by their gorgeous cities filled with many architectural and artistic treasures. I’m also amazed how they managed to preserve so much of their historic and old buildings. Also, we have the same Mediterranean climate and similarities in terms of culture, where every region has its own dialect, cuisine, history and specific traditions. Apart from all this I cannot leave out the good food, good wine and hospitable people. WHAT’S THE HAPPIEST JOB OR CAREER Y OU COULD HAVE? The happiest job I could have, and which in fact I’m studying for, is that of a kindergarten assistant. Since when I was a little girl I always enjoyed spending time with small children and babysitting for family members during family gatherings. Being with children is always fun and you can never get bored with all the noise, mess, laughter and excitement they create. What isn’t there to love? You have the privilege that the parents trust you with their children, and playing a role in children’s lives during those vital first years is very rewarding. Being aware that my role in child caring can have an impact on a child’s entire life is very challenging, since these first years of the children are very

20 I DO

crucial. But I’m in for the challenge since as they say the bigger the challenge the bigger the reward and satisfaction. HOW DO Y OU LIKE TO RELAX ? My way of relaxing during cold days is by lying in my bed watching a film on my laptop while eating a bowl of freshly made popcorn; whereas, in summer I prefer going to the beach. Another way of relaxing is dining out with family and friends accompanied by a good glass of wine, or going out for a coffee or for a drink. Shopping also helps me to relax especially when I do it online. WHO ARE THE PEOPLE, AND/OR PETS WHO MAKE Y OU HAPPIEST, FOR WHAT REASONS? The people that make me happy are my family and friends. But on top of them all there are my niece Krista, three and a half, and my nephew Mattia, two. They are adorable and so much fun. They make me feel so happy when I am with them. I enjoy playing with them and reading them stories. They make me laugh so much with the things they say and how they pronounce certain words. I am so grateful for them. As regards to pets, I have always been an animal lover, but I always preferred cats and dogs as pets. They are very intelligent creatures and they show you their love in their own way. They can only make you happy. Once I also had a white rat as a pet she was so cute! She used to love to cuddle up in my bed under my blankets. WHAT COULD THE WORLD DO WITHOUT? I think the world could do without plastic. There was a time when plastic did not exist and now it is one of the things that is ruining our planet. I know it is hard to do without plastic at all but with a little effort from everyone we can manage to avoid much of the plastic we

are using. There was a time when milk and drinks used to come in glass bottles which were returned to be refilled; when school books where covered with brown paper and when people used to go shopping with a cloth bag or a wicker basket, to mention just a few examples. Although there are campaigns and awareness against the use of plastic, you still find people going into the local shops for a thing or two and asking for a plastic bag. It’s a simple thing but it can make a big difference. AND WHAT DOES IT NEED MORE OF? In my opinion the world needs to have more respect. I think respect is the basic value of a healthy society. We should learn to respect ourselves, our families, our elderly, people who are different from us, and those who have different opinions. We should also have respect for nature and our environment. Wherever you look you see arrogance, selfishness, greed and indifference to the injustices around us. If we are more respectful the world would be a better place. HOW DO Y OU FEEL ABOUT SOCIAL MEDIA AND WHAT DO Y OU MOSTLY USE IT FOR? Social media has become an integral part of our daily life. It brought people from around the world closer and in a flash you will know whatever is happening around us. Another good thing about social media is that you can keep in touch with family and friends, near and far. I feel that social media should be used more responsibly and with respect so that we won’t cause any harm. I do feel that too much time spent on social media is taking away from the quality time that we can spend with our family and friends, or from doing other activities from which we can benefit such as sports or voluntary work in our community.

And if you want to capitalise on Malta‘s rich culture and historical legacy on your big day, Heritage Malta is hard to beat. With a portfolio including neolithic temples, Baroque auberges and palaces, forts, and a maritime museum to boot, Heritage Malta offers spectacular, exclusive venues for every taste and budget. Selecting a historic backdrop for your wedding is about celebrating the past in your future. It anchors your special day in time and tradition and coats the occasion in a refined patina of nostalgia, culture and elegance. From the intimate to the monumental, the wide diversity of venues to choose from provides bespoke and inclusive choices to suit the most discerning couples and every kind of celebration. In the country’s historic heart, the majestic front courtyard of Vilhena Palace is conveniently situated just a few steps away from the main gates of the Silent City of Mdina. The 18th Century palace, reconstructed in 1726 by Grandmaster Antonio Manuel De Vilhena in the Parisian Baroque style, offers an exquisite mise-en-scene for a summer wedding. Travelling back through the annals of time to pre-history, the neolithic Temples of Ġgantija in Gozo, and those of Ħaġar Qim and Tarxien on Malta make for UNESCO World Heritage settings that are

unparalleled and are sure to leave many a foreign guest open-mouthed. Back in the capital, the Baroque splendour of the Gran Salon in the Auberge de Provence, in Valletta, with its richly painted frescoes, musicians‘ gallery and wooden beamed ceiling is enough to make guests feel like royalty. Across the water, dreamily romantic at night Fort St Angelo offers panoramic views of Valletta and the Grand Harbour lit up and iridescent in the evening. Nearby in Birgu, the garden within the Inquisitor‘s Palace, an 18thcentury powerhouse, makes for a picturesque setting within an unexpected venue. Meanwhile, the Palace‘s ornate and imposing staircase provides the perfect backdrop for wedding photoshoots. For those with seafaring connections, St Angelo‘s commodious hall inside the Malta Maritime Museum, housed within the old naval bakery, with its terrace overlooking the Birgu Marina, caters for stylish boutique events.

WEDDING MAKERS

Saying it with flowers IN THIS ISSUE WE TALK TO MARISABELLE BONNICI, OF THE MALTA FLORIST, ABOUT BLOOMS AND BOUQUETS. BRIEFLY WHAT IS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND Y OUR WORK AND HOW ARE Y OU ABLE TO KEEP A PERMANENT SUPPLY OF GORGEOUS FLOWERS FOR WEDDINGS? We initially started The Malta Florist by growing a small selection of seasonal flowers and selling them from a stand at the farmer’s market. After a few months we were approached by friends and family to supply bouquets for special occasions, and later by brides and companies to supply flowers for weddings and events. After agreeing to the first few tentative enquiries, our passion and interest for floral arrangements grew. We visited flower and wedding fairs in Holland, Germany and Turkey. Met several international floral designers and followed courses with them in person and online. We get our inspiration from many things including fashion, jewellery and architecture. Alexander McQueen is a huge inspiration for me and as he said “You’ve got to know the rules to break them. That’s what I’m here for, to demolish the rules but to keep the tradition.” I relate to that quite a lot. Within the past two years we have done a lot of research about the best flowers to grow in Malta. To date we have several greenhouses in which we rotate flowers according to season. We always encourage our brides to use seasonal flowers. However, if a bride has her heart set on a particular flower that is out of season we can import directly from Holland. HOW LONG AHEAD SHOULD A BRIDE PLAN AND BOOK THE FLOWERS FOR HER WEDDING? We only book one wedding per weekend as we want to make sure that the couple has our undivided attention, so the earlier a bride books with us the better. Having said that, we always recommend booking around 18 months – two years in advance. HOW ARE Y OU ABLE TO HELP BRIDES CHOOSE THEIR BOUQUETS AND FLORAL DECORATIONS? We have a very personal approach. It is our philosophy that the best wedding flowers are created in partnership with you, and this is why we do not have one- size-fits- all packages. We need to create your vision for your wedding day together. We believe that we can help translate the vision in your head into floral creations that aren’t just what you dream of but are scenes that surpass your imagination. We generally start with a very detailed questionnaire so we can offer a quote and our advice. Then we set up online consultations and even

24 I DO

site visits with the couple at both the ceremony and reception venues – we then create vision boards so that we can make sure that every bride is happy with her flowers on her special day. SOME FLOWERS AND BOUQUET STY LES WILL ALWAY S BE POPULAR, BUT DO Y OU SEE BRIDES CHANGING TRADITIONS AND CHOOSING MORE UNUSUAL PLANTS OR PLANT-BASED DECORATIONS? Yes, at the moment bouquets with succulents and other plants included are becoming very popular. We have also had many brides ask to hire potted plants in addition to their flowers to embellish churches and venues. Small plants have also become a common souvenir that many couples opt to give as something that guests will hang onto. WEDDINGS GO ON ALL Y EAR ROUND AND OUR CLIMATE IS NOT PERFECT FOR HORTICULTURE, HOW ARE Y OU ABLE TO ENSURE COUPLES WILL ALWAY S FIND WHAT THEY NEED? We always recommend that couples chose seasonal flowers as this will ensure that their flowers last throughout the reception and look their best, especially in hot summer months. We also keep close contact with the couple on the weeks before the wedding should a heat wave or cold spell occur so they will always be informed and not have any nasty surprises on the day. We do recommend avoiding certain flowers that we believe won’t last. For example, a wedding with tulips as the main flower in August is not something we recommend. However, if the bride insists, we can import out of season flowers. FINALLY , WHAT ARE SOME OF THE REAL JOY S OF THE WORK Y OU DO? Everyone loves flowers and we are proud to be offering something that is just a little bit different, with a little more story and innovation than simply a bunch of flowers. Growing our flowers in a sustainable way means we are leaving Malta better than we found it. This job allows us to be closer to nature and spend time in open fields whilst at the same time it bringing joy and happiness to people’s lives and to use our creativity to make our brides’ dreams come true. Furthermore, this profession never gets boring as no two days are alike – one day we are harvesting blooms and the next we are setting up magnificent floral installations in gorgeous settings.

WEDDING PACKAGES

Less stress with a wedding package The decision to get married is nothing to the decisions you will need to make it happen

W

hen the thrill of announcing your engagement gives way to planning the actual wedding a mild frisson of panic may well set in. Where do you begin? This is supposed to the most fun you could have, but how will you fulfill all the ideal wedding dreams you’ve always had for what is supposed to be one of the best and most important days of your life? The next question is how to make it all as easy as possible. Can you have everything, or almost everything on your wish list without running yourself ragged coordinating, cakes and dresses with cars and perlini? The answer is yes. Go for a wedding package. There are wonderful venues that will tailor your requirements specifically. With a wedding package you can create your dream wedding with help from people who are used to dealing with requests for the most stunning locations, unique catering, whatever makes your dream wedding. And it’s invaluable for couples who need everything to be in one place, or who both work 24/7, and want to make everything as simple as possible for themselves and their guests, without being worn to a frazzle in the process. In fact, so many wedding venues are offering this service.

26 I DO

Your best start is to list your priorities and find one that can live up to them, depending on how realistic they are. DECIDE WHAT Y OU WANT You’re bound to have very high expectations based on weddings you have been to or images you found online. But, instead of remembering what you liked about them, use your own ideas, inspired by your interests and sentiments and even, in some ways, your work, to create your perfect setting. Keep these in mind and make them clear to the package provider. Then confirm exactly how they can provide the reception, décor, food and drinks; in short everything as you visualise it. CHOOSE WHAT’S BEST FOR Y OU Make time to visit as many wedding package providers as possible. And always read all the small print. Some pre-set packages, may include things you don’t need or want. Or you may find some extra additions are necessary when you finally consider all your options. Venues will very likely have a choice of packages, and the top ones will be happy to draw one up for you. It is important to make what you are looking for perfectly clear. For,

I DO 7

example, you may have guests from overseas who need accommodation; or maybe you would like to stay at the venue for a couple of days after the wedding. Most hotel venues will welcome such requests. Try to visit your prospective venues at the same time of year and day that your wedding will held. By actually being in that time and space, you’ll get the best sense of how your choice of decorations, flowers and colours, plus any lighting you may need, will look. CONTROLLING THE COST Never lose sight of your budget. Be on the alert for ‘attractive extras at only a small additional cost’. They may be standard in other places. Remember to factor in gratuities and check whether VAT is included. Are there any discounts for a wedding date in low season? Are drinks and wine priced at a flat rate or on sale or return? Is corkage charged if you bring in your own wine? Add up a rough estimate of the cost of hiring or providing everything yourselves, compared with the cost of certain packages. Whenever you include any extras these should be clearly itemized. And it must be stated in the contract whether you or the package providers are responsible for sourcing them, and how they are covered in the final expenses. GETTING THE BEST FROM Y OUR PACKAGE If you’re deciding between a wedding package and one

where you source everything separately it really does pay to cost the two options carefully. Compare the rates for all inclusive with those for hiring or providing items like tables, chairs, linens, flatware, silver, glasses, lighting and so on. Will arrangements be made for unexpected extras, and will no-shows be charged for? Can get on with the representative/s you will be dealing with? Do they listen to your wishes and suggest the best ways to fulfil them; or try to persuade you to choose unnecessary extras? Are they able to keep appointments and be readily available? If you feel there is something missing, don’t be afraid to go elsewhere. Ask for detailed descriptions of all the services included. They vary enormously from one provider to another. With all the figures, balance the pros and cons of each one. Remember that however organised, reasonable and in control you think you will be while planning your wedding, it is a monumental undertaking,so to tweak a well-known saying: The best things come often come in big packages.

Be sure to trust your instinct. The best overall deal will be the one where you feel you’ll have all it takes to make your perfect day. I DO 27

rganising your wedding is one of the most special and personal events of your life. At Villa Arrigo, we understand this and limit the number of weddings we style and cater for each year. This allows important time for us to really get to know the couple and understand their dreams and importantly their budget. With over a quarter of a century of tailoring unique weddings for local and foreign couples alike, we craft each wedding to the slightest of detail. Classily chic and contemporary, Villa Arrigo remains the most trusted, most value for money wedding venue on the islands. Meet us and let us exceed your wedding expectations. At Villa Arrigo we are not just a venue. The imposing entrance and welcoming indoors is delectably decorated to have the warm feeling of a ‘home away from home’. The venue has its own catering with a fully equipped kitchen that can tailor and craft each wedding to the couple’s desires. The venue also has a grand marquee, which is totally sound proof, with its own audio visual equipment. Weddings can be held indoors, or in the luscious outdoors. From seated banquets to standing events, our culinary team will ensure that every couple has their wedding their way. Our team will meet up with clients, offer to show them around the venue, and discuss with the couple the type of wedding they would like to have. We also discuss the food options available and show them the recent trends on food, beverage arrangements, décor and even further discuss all other options that form part of the event, such as music, flowers, photographers and other designs and requests they have. We then create a plan for their big day. This is normally done one year in advance. During that year, and prior to the wedding, several other meetings are held, and as the day gets closer we start to finalise the number of guests, menu, the beverages, the final design of the wedding cake, and organise a chronological order of the event, with time lines, and confirm the time-lines. Clients may also opt for our all-inclusive menus, which are set prices for the food, sweets, beverages, venue, staff, security and wedding cake. Therefore, Villa Arrigo can be considered as a one stop shop, providing you with food, bars and waiting staff, as well as marquees, tables, chairs, linen, cutlery, crockery, décor, flower arrangements and all that you may need to make your function an outstanding success! GIFTS THAT LAST THE CHARMING CUSTOM OF WEDDING SOUVENIRS CAN SPREAD THE LOVE EVEN FURTHER.

P

resents are part and parcel of weddings. Generous, loving, caring ones are given by family and friends to couples starting their married life. And the couples show their appreciation with well-themed, mostly creative, special souvenirs. It wouldn’t be a wedding without them. For most brides, a lot of thought and effort goes into presenting sweet and suitable souvenirs, many of which are treasured to their silver anniversary and beyond for their sentimental association. However, many couples are becoming extra aware of the immense feel good factors their wedding generates, for them and those enjoying their celebrations. And with this sudden surge of love and happiness comes a wave of gratitude and an urge to share some of their emotional good fortune in a wider and practical way. And what better way can there be than remembering an organisation or cause that is close to their hearts and including it in their day. HERE’S HOW Firstly, decide which charity you want to benefit. This will not be easy. At such a sentimental time our heart strings are easily pulled. You could narrow it down to one you are already involved with, or that you know would be likely to appeal to the majority of your guests. If it’s really too tough write a few names on pieces of paper and ask your chief bridesmaid or best man to make the draw. But remember, it‘s your decision and you don’t have to explain or justify it to anyone. KEEP IT SUBTLE Noble as it may make you feel there is no need to splash your intention on your wedding invitations, or all over social media. Instead put a short message naming the charity you are supporting, instead of giving souvenirs, on your wedding programme and/or private wedding website. You could also print a small message on your seating plan, menus or place settings to remind your guests that their being at your wedding is helping whichever cause you have chosen. Sadly, you also need to be prepared for the die-hards that are out there for whom the wedding souvenir is the ‘reward’ for their present to the couple, and who may feel that guests should not be ‘deprived’ of this token just so the couple can look good. Yes. Well…x’taghmel? Your treasured guests are the ones who will see your gesture as a way of spreading everyone’s happiness even further. And anyway, many charities have charming tokens for couples to hand out explaining their decision, so everyone can leave with a souvenir that actually means more than most of us could imagine.

And it's easier than you would think, because we have local jewellers, with an international reputation for amazing pieces, who like nothing better than making dreams come true. IDO recently visited George Farrugia Jewellers to discover what a joy it can be for brides, grooms and their families to choose their own custom-made pieces. These may be presents to mark the big day, or items to wear during the celebrations – or both! After years of study and obtaining his all important hallmark, George Farrugia began his career exactly 40 years ago, in Ta' Dbiegi Craft Village. Since then this same premises has been extensively enlarged, and his two sons Samuel and Lukas have joined the firm. Both boys' interest flourished from as soon as they were old enough to watch their father at work, on Saturday

mornings. Next came the summer holiday jobs, and with their proud father's example and instructive encouragement they discovered all the ways precious materials and jewels can be used to create beautiful pieces. And because each new piece is a different challenge the novelty never wears off. The three work very closely and have received many extremely important commissions. But all brides looking for something extra special to wear on their wedding day will certainly receive the most dedicated advice and assistance in getting everything they wish for. Depending on the quantity, materials and the design, commissions should be ordered at least two to three months in advance. Clients may turn up with photos, sketches, even examples of period pieces to adapt, as inspiration. George, Samuel and Lukas really enjoy the process of working with them on the design and choosing the best and most suitable materials to use. They also like to create pieces with stones such as opals which are very beautiful but not generally associated with weddings. In fact when asked what is the best part of his 40-year career George immediately replied it was seeing the bride happy at her wedding. Jewellery is also a particularly personal and sentimental gift. So isn't it wonderful for brides and grooms to know that, even if they arrive with just a vague idea in mind, here are the people who will do whatever it takes to make that idea a reality.

THE COUPLE

Charlene & Chris 25 June 2021 Charlene Grima, 32, a senior manager, and Chris Gatt, 32, a programme officer and musician - front man for the Travellers, were married in Gozo Cathedral.

CHRISTMAS PROPOSAL fter over seven years, growing closer in so many ways through their different adventures, Chris decided to go to the next level by proposing on Christmas Eve, during a casual sunset picnic at one of their favourite sunset spots in Gozo “Probably my love for sunset made him do it”, Charlene suggested. When planning the wedding we decided to go for an intimate and limited number of very close friends and family. Two dear friends Jo and Kim, directors of Wedding Invitations Malta did an awesome job for the couple’s chic invitations idea using dried flowers on the front and floral envelopes matching the theme of the wedding. They also designed the menu cards on each table and the souvenir tags.

A

A CATHEDRAL WEDDING As both Charlene and Chris were born and raised in Gozo they decided to stick to their roots and get married there. Gozo Cathedral was a natural choice as they both lived in Rabat, Gozo, for a good part of their lives. Once availability of the cathedral was confirmed they looked no further for their ceremony venue. »

36 I DO

» To compliment the beauty of the cathedral’s marble floor they opted for a blue carpet on the stairs up to the altar. Two flower arrangements stood at the door, and there were flowers lining the isle and on the altar. The light from the cathedral chandeliers completed the ambiance. The couple wanted to give the celebration a spiritual feeling and so they chose some religious Hillsongs to be played thoughout the ceremony. Pamela Bezzina and her pianist filled the cathedral with their beautiful melodies. “The wedding Mass was celebrated by one of my cousins, a very young priest – he made the whole ceremony personal and a lot about us both. We tried to involve our family and those close to us in some way or another during the wedding Mass and that made it more intimate,” Charlene concluded. BEAUTIFUL AND ORIGINAL Charlene wanted an original wedding dress and chose an ivory two-layered gown with a corseted waist and embroidered tulle, over a simple heavyweight slip dress in dark ivory pure silk crepe, designed by Luke Azzopardi. Her unique and stunning hairpiece was designed especially to match the leaves embroidered on her dress then custom made, in gold, by Gozitan goldsmith Lukas Farrugia, at George Farrugia Jewellery, Gharb. To complete the look she wore her late grandma’s gold earrings and carried a boho bouquet combining wild greens like eucalyptus and pampas grass and flowers including sempre viva santini, wax flower, and different sized roses, bound with material from the bridesmaids’ dresses. »

» Chris wore a black tuxedo, lined with the Luke Azzopardi Studio ‘Tree of Life’ print in silk. And they exchanged simple gold rings with a matt polish, which they can wear every day – rose gold for Charlene. A LITTLE PARADISE Every year Chris and his fellow Travellers play a special, intimate, event at the Marsovin Antonin vineyards, Ramla Bay, so Chris and Charlene wanted to make this venue a little paradise for their reception. And do it themselves. Helped by family and several of the vendors, they ensured the whole field was equipped to host a wedding; including a portable kitchen and bathrooms, lighting and sound systems. Covering the whole vineyard in warm yellow fairy lights and tea lights on each station gave it a really romantic feel. Long, Tuscan wedding style tables were decorated with flower-filled bottles, and old wine bottles bearing table numbers. Guests’ places were personalised by a eucalyptus branch with a copy of the food and gin bar menus. The head table, seating the couple and their families, was decorated with a metres-long garland of greenery, wooden candle chandeliers, handmade by Chris’s father, and glass tea light holders. »

“We had agreed the most important thing is to celebrate us and our love, and have fun surrounded by close friends and our dear family.” – Charlene and Chris

» Chris’s father also adapted an old well in the middle of the vines to display the wedding cake, which was made as a gift by a dear friend Angie, decorated with a green garland and gold leaf leaves and surrounded by candles. Guests were treated to a six-course meal, from Joseph at Ta’Frenc, each one served with wine from grapes produced in the same vineyards. There was also a gin bar with six types of gin cocktails using fresh fruits and herbs, and named after the Travellers songs, Xemx u Xita, Iljuni fis-silg etc. A boho style swing hung on a wooden structure over the vines. And Charlene’s father’s old bike was covered in flowers and recycled as a gift station for the souvenir ceramic trays Charlene had handmade and fired, plus rattan fans and flip flops for anyone needing to change their shoes. “All our families and close friends helped with the wedding, especially when it came to postponing the wedding by a year due to COVID. They were all there giving us their love, opinions and support. So they all deserve a big thank you” the couple pointed out.

THE COUPLE

Thea & Mario 11 June 2021 Thea Saliba, 29 a lawyer and piano tutor, and Mario Camilleri, 33 a lawyer, were married in Mellieha Parish Church.

A PERFECT PROPOSAL t a family dinner over Christmas, Thea’s favourite time of year, the couple were taking photos by the tree, their favourite music playing in the background. Suddenly Mario went down on one knee. “He opened a ring box, and asked me The Question! I was so overwhelmed with happiness and of course immediately said ‘yes’! I’m so lucky that the proposal was how I’ve always imagined it to be, surrounded by the people I love most, during the time of the year that is very special to me, at my parents’ home which where I lived all my life”, Thea explained. Thea designed the invitations for their fairytale themed wedding herself. They were then handmade and embellished with a cute bow.

A

A CHURCH FULL OF MEMORIES Thea and Mario’s choice of church was easy. When they were first dating, they spent many summer weekends in Mellieha, at the beach, restaurants and Mass in Mellieha Church. “Apart from it being a beautiful church, it brings back beautiful memories of our first few months together” they said. “One of the most special and magical moments that I shall treasure forever is surely the walk down the aisle with my dad, who has always been my rock and supporter”, said Thea. Music was by Analise Mifsud and Thea wore the first wedding dress she had ever tried on in her life! She added a tailor-made long veil to fulfil her grandmother’s wish to see her wearing a nice long veil on her wedding day. »

» For jewellery she wore a beautiful pendant – a surprise gift from her parents on the day of her wedding. And, as her favourite flowers are roses she carried a beautiful bouquet of lovely white roses and her bridesmaids carried bouquets of pink and lilac roses, created by Flowers by Anna Zammit. A MUSICAL RECEPTION Palazzo Promontorio, having both indoor and outdoor space with a pool and a gorgeous view, made a perfect venue. Thea’s parents designed the whole décor, for the wedding reception, including beautiful fresh flowers, again from Flowers by Anna Zammit, and organising the seating plan “They worked so hard to make sure that every last detail was perfect and the final result was breathtaking”, Thea explained. »

» “We also printed various photos of our pre-wedding photo shoot and placed them around the internal areas of the reception venue which gave it a cosy, homey feeling”, she added. A scrumptious six- course Gala Dinner by James Caterers, was served. And Thea designed the wedding cake herself too. “I’ve always liked white wedding cakes so we decided to go with white. We added different styles of white lace and fresh white flowers to the cake. The topper was a cute bride and groom statue, chosen by my mum”, she said. THEIR WHOLE NEW WORLD As big Disney fans the couple wanted a Disney song with meaningful lyrics for their first dance and chose an instrumental version of A Whole New World, with a violin played by Puse. The whole beautiful and romantic experience was lit by pyro fireworks, and captured by a drone. Having done ballet for 16 years and modern for two, Thea choreographed the dance herself. And as a pianist she loves and appreciates good music and was very happy to have her good friend George Curmi Il-Pusè and his band to entertain the guests during the wedding celebration. »

46 I DO

I DO 47

» “Since it was Father’s Day, I dedicated a special song to my father and father-in-law – I played the piano and sang a lovely song especially themed for father’s day. I also surprised my husband with a song that I sang with Pusè’s live band during the wedding”, she says.

AND THERE ARE SPECIAL MENTIONS FOR... Mario’s parents who were always there to support the couple through the months of planning. Mario’s best friend and best man for all his efforts especially on the day and with a great speech mentioning some fun experiences that he and Mario had during their teenage years, together with some other fond memories. Thea’s friend and cousin the bridesmaids, her best friend and maid of honour who was so helpful and supportive through all the wedding preparations. Her adorable flower girl, cute ring bearer and sweet cousins who were ushers with her brother in law. Thea’s aunt and Mario’s older brother, who were the witnesses Her fabulous hair stylist friend Tracy and amazing makeup artist Leanne Mallia. And for the sweet pic Thea took in her wedding dress with her adorable cat Shelbie. Mario and Thea were super excited for their wedding, having had to postpone it for a year due to the current situation. But it all turned out perfectly and they are so glad that they all got to experience this memorable day together as one big happy family.

THE COUPLE

Tara & Patrick 11 June 2021 Tara Giacchino, 30, a speciality trainee doctor in obstetrics & gynaecology, and Patrick Briscoe White, a chartered company secretary, were married at St Patrick’s Church, Sliema.

A PARISIAN PROPOSAL atrick and Tara knew each had been together since 2013. In 2017, when they moved to UK to pursue their careers, marriage was the natural next step. “The proposal was perfect; Patrick chose a gorgeous restaurant on top of the Pompidou Museum, with spectacular views of Paris. He waited until 10pm when the Eiffel Tower was sparkling right in front of us then asked me to marry him”, Tara remembers. The couple‘s plans for a short engagement were halted by Covid-19. Their 2020 wedding was postponed twice; the hardest and most heart-breaking decisions they had to make, with literally 90% of the wedding planned and booked. But, in the end it was the right decision. Their families and friends were a huge support and even made a video for them for the original wedding day, which was full of messages of encouragement and left them in floods of tears.

P

SUCH A SPECIAL CEREMONY As a St Edward’s old boy Patrick wanted their wedding to be in the school chapel. But Covid restrictions demanded a bigger church so they chose St Patrick’s because that was where they grew up going to Sunday Mass, Tara celebrated her Holy Communion, and Patrick’s grandparents were married. The wedding ceremony was streamed to include everyone kept away by Covid. Patrick’s cousin recorded the opening song, The Prayer by Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli. Another cousin who couldn’t make it wrote a bidding prayer. The Mass stood out as one of those forever special moments. Tara’s dad, never one to show too much emotion, had tears in his

eyes. Fr Brendan personalised the Mass using the couple’s lists of things they love about each other – some very romantic, others not so romantic. The whole church was laughing out loud at one point. Tara felt like a princess in her dream dress, by Millanova, from Wedding Bells. It had a gorgeous bodice with sequins and pearls and was slightly off the shoulder with a V at the back, with a plain, long skirt which matched beautifully. Her custom-made, cathedral veil, with crystals and pearls, was held in place by a headband from Zsazsa. She borrowed diamond earrings and a necklace from her aunt and grandmother and carried a hanging bouquet of green foliage and white flowers, by Flowers by Anna Zammit. The couple wanted blue tail coats for the boys, inspired by the TV series Peaky Blinders. And the braces and engraved pocket watches worn by the groomsmen looked so good. For their handmade, bespoke rings Patrick chose a classic gold band and Tara a customised gold band with three diamonds, to compliment her engagement ring. A RECEPTION BY THE SEA Since Tara and Patrick live and work in the UK, they really wanted to get married by the sea and The Reef Club, Westin Dragonara Resort was always their top choice. Guests sat at tables decorated with fruit and flower arrangements by Flowers by Anna Zammit. This was something she had not done before, but they looked amazing and really complimented the colour scheme. Everyone enjoyed an exquisite five- course meal, and a five-tier cake, with ivory icing to match Tara’s dress and fresh flowers. »

» “We were so apprehensive about a sit-down dinner as these aren’t the norm for weddings in Malta. It turned out to be better than we ever expected. And I’m sure this type of set up will now become more popular”, said Tara. Curtains of fairy lights made the venue look stunning and magical. The New Victorians played during dinner. Then entertainment from Gianni and his band created a fantastic party atmosphere, even with Covid restrictions in place! “My sister Hannah sang the first dance with Gianni and the band. We chose Afterglow by Ed Sheeran. Anyone who knows me well knows I love Ed Sheeran”, Tara explained. Adding, “Just when we were coming to the end of the song, Patrick jumped on stage and played the guitar and finished off the song with Hannah. Very few wives can say their husband serenaded them on their wedding day. My dad and bridesmaids joined me on the makeshift dance floor for these special moments, and I just remember feeling like the luckiest woman alive. I thought I planned every second of the wedding down to a T- little did I know Hannah and Patrick were meeting Gianni for secret rehearsals.” »

SPECIAL THANK Y OUS » Tara and Patrick have so many memories including: The best man and maid of honour included messages from our overseas loved ones who couldn’t make it which were so special and emotional! Snapshot photo booth, which was a huge success and so much fun and even set up the guest book for them with pictures and messages from their guests which they will treasure forever Tara’s mother Yvette and mother-in-law Karen who were a huge help and were very much involved in the planning. “There is no way we could have organised the wedding without them”, the couple agreed. The father of the bride whose speech left everyone all in tears, and the best man for his speech including a poem ‘The Our Patrick’, which was so well written and hilarious And finally, Tara concludes: “our gorgeous niece and flower girl who insisted on walking down the aisle with her sparkly crocs (and not the pretty wedding shoes which were bought for the occasion) and her infamous rag doll ‘Dolly’. I’m sure we will be laughing and smiling at that memory for many years to come.”

Nikita & Roderick 7 July 2021 Nikita Alamango, 32, an ARMS chief operations officer, and Roderick Spiteri, 38, an architect & civil engineer, were married at Sant Ubaldeska, Paola.

LUCKY BIRTHDAY PROPOSAL oderick proposed last year on Nikita’s lucky birthday. The couple planned a civil wedding and a ‘normal’ large wedding once Covid had passed. But then they decided to take control of their lives rather than wait. In April it was pretty clear the summer would be okay. Plans for fewer restrictions were being announced. “I didn’t want to change the date. July is my birthday month and seven is my favourite number. A very close relative passed on this day as well, so it is also quite sentimental. We decided to plan everything in a few weeks – two months really”, Nikita explained. »

» With Nikita loving classical themes, and Roderick preferring a contemporary style, they achieved a good mix of both, and include their shared love of travel. Colours were neutral with touches of gold for the decor and blush pink for the bridesmaids. They browsed the web for ideas for wedding invitations and Roderick combined and designed the invitations, menus, table chart and table names and numbers. Classic perlini and paper hand fans, against the heat, made lovely wedding favours, but Nikita and Roderick gave a donation to The Richmond Foundation instead of souvenirs. “We are both supporters of mental health and wanted to use our special occasion to raise awareness”, they said. A VERY PERSONAL CEREMONY Roderick is from Paola and was mayor for several years, so the church was his choice and Nikita agreed. The church is quite small so they wanted to bring out its best aspects without going over the top. Decorations were in the hands of their very talented florist. They both love flowers and the atmosphere they create and decided to keep all the flowers white for the church. »

» The couple discussed their relationship, how they became friends and their friendship developed into a serious relationship, with Dun Marc Andre, chaplain of Poala church. He delivered a very personal service with a few anecdotes which made the service very special. The exchange of marriage vows was carried out by Fr Luke, a friend who also undertook the couple’s spiritual journey, through the Ta’ Cana course. For music, Nikita chose Mezzo-Soprano Christine Dalli, who sang with her in a choir when they were young. Nikita wore a dress by Alamango. In spite of the short notice, worry about alterations and getting material from abroad with the Brexit and Covid delays, all the staff worked magic. Her jewellery was a beautiful three- piece set- collar, earrings and ring; her ‘something borrowed’ from her witness and dearest aunt Renate. And she carried a bouquet of blush pink Vendela roses. The groom wore a detailed grey jacket. They chose three-coloured gold bands, the groom’s was plain, the bride’s set with a diamond middle band. “We also got our rings blessed at Santu Wistin in Valletta, as I am a devotee of St Rita. Special thanks to Fr Alex”, Nikita added. The Mass was streamed live on a private channel so that family and friends who could not attend because of Covid could follow from abroad. They had people following from London to Sydney. »

FROM DREAM TO REALITY » With its beautiful garden, Mdina in the back ground, decorations by florist Fiona Azzopardi and Andrea and Heather from iCan, Xara Lodge was their dream venue Dinner is definitely more complicated than a reception, but Nikita and Roderick made sure there would be something for everyone on the menu, which included salmon & scallop roulade; pumpkin and cheese ravioli and then either a local sea bass or a fillet of beef. The wedding cake, was a mix of traditional ground almonds but also a tier of Baci for chocolate lovers. There were also wines for each course, a selection of aperitifs including Prosecco and gin, digestifs and the couple’s favourite single malt whiskeys. Ira Losco and her band provided the entertainment. And for their first dance Nikita and Roderick asked the Xara to switch off all the lights except a curtain of fairy lights, and danced to All Of Me. by John Legend. Their song for the dance with their parents was Because You Loved Me, by Celine Dion.

“We decided we need to take control of our lives rather than wait for this pandemic to pass” – Nikita and Roderick

62 I DO

THE SPECIAL EX TRAS The couple had special thanks for both sets of parents who stood by them through it all and organised exciting surprises like sparklers going off at the start of their first dance, and Ivan Grech turning up to sing a few songs after the cake cutting, which made their night complete. Nikita says her maid of honour, Mariette, and her bridal team: Alison, Rodianne, Kayleigh and Jessica were simply an exceptional support system before and on her special day, always there to share a laugh or help with a problem. “I had my twin cousins turn up as flower girls – the best surprise of the day, it was all my mom’s doing”, Nikita concluded.
