A MESSAGE FROM THE GM ith its rich history, the Duke Energy Center for the Arts – Mahaffey Theater has been on the leading edge of performing arts in St. Petersburg and the bay area for more than half a century.

TO THE 2019-2020 SEASON!

The stories are legendary about the early days of what was originally known as the Bayfront Theater, and how, as the epicenter of entertainment it introduced hundreds of superstar acts to local audiences.

That was then. This is now.

The late 1980s brought a series of major renovations to the inside of the theater - which is owned by the City of St. Petersburg. With the renovation came a new name The Mahaffey Theater, after St. Petersburg’s own Mahaffey family. In 2006, Progress Energy signed on as the naming rights sponsor of the campus, which is now known as the Duke Energy Center for the Arts. Our spacious lobby and brilliant glass-walled atrium overlooking Tampa Bay came years later in another round of major reconstruction, making the building more luxurious than ever before. In 2011, Bill Edwards’ Big3 Entertainment took over management of the venue and has since added even more amenities.

I continue to be astounded – and thrilled – at the growth and forward motion exhibited by our 2,031-seat performing arts venue, year after year.

Today, the theater is part of a spectacular renaissance – St. Petersburg has never been as culturally vibrant as it is right now. We are just a part of this wave of change, but we like to think we’re an important part. Attendance is up every single year – I see more new faces every time I walk through the lobby before a show.

The venue is luxurious, that’s something we’re proud of. It’s like nothing else in Tampa Bay. For me, the biggest point of pride is the interaction between our guests and the theater’s dedicated staff. We’re all part of one big community, we like and respect one another, and when I see folks coming back show after show, that’s when I know we’re all family, too.

IRA GLASS SATURDAY, JANUARY 25 • 8PM Ira Glass has created one of the most listened to radio programs in the United States. This American Life is heard every week by more than 2.2 million listeners across more than 500 public radio stations, with another 2.5 million people downloading each podcast. Starting as an intern at National Public Radio in 1978, Glass proves tenacity is key working through almost every position at the company to get where he is now. This American Life was first put on the air in 1995 and has won the highest honors for broadcasting and journalistic excellence, including six Peabody awards.

Our light and sound systems are state of the art – and the acoustics are rich, full and all-encompassing. The Florida Orchestra, for example, has an incredible presence during a Mahaffey Theater performance; the strings, brass and woodwinds lingering in the air like multi-colored fireworks, intertwining with the chest-rattling percussion for a truly thrilling aural experience.

From vocalists with small combos, big jazz bands and superstar singers to full-on rock ‘n’ roll groups, everyone sounds – and looks – their very best when they’re onstage. From the orchestra section to the balcony, the dress circle to the tri-level opera boxes, there is literally not a bad seat in the house.

The year 2019 marks the 27th anniversary year of our Class Acts Performance Series for school children. The Bill Edwards Foundation for the Arts has presented Class Acts for nearly eight years after taking it over from the City of St. Petersburg.

Our mission and scope of services are being amplified to reach broader audiences. We are more than just a performing arts center, we are a community center – and we want everyone in this area to feel ownership to the theater and its programs and share in our success and participate in our events.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH AND PARTNERSHIPS Our goal is to make arts education accessible to everyone, and we aim to partner with our cultural neighbors. We place professional teaching artists in classrooms as well as local community organizations to deepen arts knowledge, enhance teachers’ curriculum, and to offer professional development in various arts disciplines.

ARTS EDUCATION PROGRAMS FOR YOUTH Our Class Acts Educational Performance Series offers teachers and students a field trip to experience live theater. Our programs align with the State of Florida standards and teach classroom subjects to school children through a performance arts experience in a world-class theater. Scholarships for admission and

transportation are provided to ensure access for schools that are designated as Title I.

LITERACY LINK PROGRAM Serving pre-kindergarten students and Head Start programs is one of our primary goals. We know that one third of children entering school lack basic language skills. Through our Literacy Link Program, we provide story books that correlate to stage performances. Then we bring the students to experience a live theater production that aligns with the book. For our older patrons, we will be bringing Giving Tree Music and Bess the Book Bus back for a highly interactive drum circle and book give-away with Books and Beats.

SPEAKERS BUREAU We have a group of dynamic speakers who are ready to make presentations to your school, your place of business, or your favorite civic organization to ignite conversations about the importance of the arts in education and other arts-related topics.

ill Edwards Foundation for the Arts has served more than 145,000 school children in the last eight years through the Class Acts Educational Performance Series.

We believe that arts education is essential to a well-rounded education and that the arts are critical to creative thinking and creative problem solving as well as unlocking the imagination. Through the series, we ensure that students are engaged in and inspired by arts all throughout the school year.

This unique program is designed to enhance student’s learning experiences through a live theater performance. Teacher Resource Guides are provided to educators with pre and post activities that are aligned to the Florida standards. We serve students, families, and schools with economic challenges from all throughout Tampa Bay. Through our Admission and Transportation Scholarship Program, we ensure every child has the chance to attend a show.
