PEOPLE

LSU wouldn’t be the school it is without some of the amazing people here. Below, we give a shoutout to some of LSU’s favorite people.

PATRICK CORMIER – CHIEF OF STAFF, LSU STUDENT GOVERNMENT DARIUS SPEITH – LSU COLLEGE OF ART & DESIGN As an art historian and author, Dr. Darius Spieth teaches various art and art history classes at LSU. He specializes in modernism, and he focuses his scholarship on the “interrelationships between art, intellectual history and economics” (design.lsu.edu). One of the general education classes Spieth teaches is ART 1001, Introduction to Fine Arts, which teaches the basic concepts of art in the fields of design, sculpture, graphics, painting and ceramics. Before Spieth was a professor at LSU, he served as Philip and Lynn Straus Curatorial Fellow at the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University.

He is best known for his studies on art markets and French Egyptomania.

“A step in the right direction is better than nothing.” This is a phrase many people are clinging to this year. Patrick Cormier, Chief of Staff for LSU Student Government, said the biggest lesson he has learned from 2020 is to keep moving forward.

As a student leader, he approaches his position with integrity, collaboration and positive accountability in mind.

“You represent all students when you’re in student government. You’re not just representing the ones that agree with you. You have to do what’s best for all students,” Cormier said.

Cormier is a junior ISDS major with an analytics minor. As chief of staff, he has a hand in many “behind the scenes” tasks such as planning meetings and collaborating with administration.

Learning to trust your team is an important aspect of being a leader, Cormier said.

“Your team has gotten you here, and your team will get you further.

That’s something I will take further into my life,” Cormier said.

Inspiring. Friendly. The heart of the Manship School. The Late Martin Johnson, former dean of the Manship School, has been characterized as all of these. Students often said he was always available and eager to answer questions or offer advice, despite being the dean of 500 undergraduates and 60 graduate students. Johnson graduated from the Manship School in 1991.

He served as editor-in-chief of the Reveille and worked at KLSU as an announcer. He was appointed dean in 2018, following Jerry Ceppos. Dean Johnson’s passing was an unexpected and devastating one. However, students, staff and professors at the Manship School continue to honor his legacy.

The Parade Grounds at LSU provide the perfect gameday location on campus. The grounds are anchored by the LSU Student Union and Memorial Tower. This makes them the ideal location for close proximity to food, bathrooms and Tiger Stadium. Larger groups are also able to enjoy the Parade Grounds because they provide a bigger space to tailgate.

However, tailgating isn’t the only activity that happens there.

Students often use the Parade Grounds for picnics, flag football and sunbathing.

LSU got its own musical organization in 1893, but it wasn’t until 1900 that the band became an important element on campus. Now it is the largest and most visible organization on campus. It is under the direction of Dr. Kelvin Jones and Dr. Cliff Croomes.

The Golden Band from Tigerland performed its first halftime show in 1924. In the early 1930s, Gov. Huey P. Long showed interest in the band and wanted it to be “second to none” because he wanted to make LSU the best university in the country. Long introduced the current purple and gold colors to the band. He also co-wrote several songs.

In 1959, Thomas Tyra introduced the Ballet Corps, known today as the Golden Girls. Since its small beginning as an 11-member band, the LSU Tiger Band has performed in parades, at NFL games and in marching festivals around the country. It represents LSU in a variety of ways and continues to be the source of many memories in Tiger Stadium.

The band is important to LSU culture today because it brings enthusiasm and a great sense of pride to any event, but most importantly to football games. Because of the Golden Band from Tigerland, our memories are a little fonder, our praise is greater and our spirts are forever L-S-U. 19

@lsu_memes_for_laville_teens “I started the page back in August of 2018 after noticing there were only a few, if any, Instagram pages that focused entirely on posting memes about LSU. The page skyrocketed in popularity in 2019 with the success of LSU football. In all honesty, I expected for the page to get around 1,000 followers tops before calling it quits.

It’s crazy to think that I currently have 10k+ people following.

Surprisingly, I have had very few crazy interactions from the account. Since I try to keep my identity as much of a secret as I can, I rarely interact with many people through the account. However, I have become close friends with fellow Baton Rouge meme page “Gordon McKernan McMemes” through the page over the past few years. I’m actually a part of a big group chat with college meme pages from around the world such as the University of York in England and the University of Guelph in Canada. Finally, my favorite interactions come when students message me that they used my page as the topic for their class assignments. It really does mean a lot to know that they enjoy my page enough to write about it.

I just want to let all of my followers know that I really do appreciate all the likes and comments they have left over the past few years. College can be a stressful time for some, so I am glad I can use this page a way to bring a bit of happiness even when times get tough. I am so blessed to be an LSU Tiger and thank everyone for allowing me to be a part of this great community!”
