From the Headmaster In our 10 years at Lovett, Penny and I have had the pleasure and privilege of attending many arts performances at Lovett. We could not be more impressed with this school’s great tradition in the arts and the fact that the arts hold a central place in our educational mission and in the life of our community. Under the outstanding leadership of our director of the Fine Arts Department, Jay Freer, the arts continue to thrive and to grow at Lovett. And, our Friends of the Arts give Jay and his colleagues and their students enormous support and encouragement. Our facilities, programs, and accomplishments in the arts would not be possible without the support and generosity of the Friends of the Arts and people throughout the Lovett and Atlanta community. We sincerely appreciate what our supporters make possible for our community and students in this essential area of school life. We thank you for attending our performances and for your ongoing devotion to the arts at Lovett. The spirit and soul of our school are all the deeper and richer because of the arts!

William S. Peebles IV, Headmaster

Nondiscriminatory Policy Statement The Lovett School admits students of any race, color, gender, religion, sexual orientation, and national or ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school. The Lovett School does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, gender, religion, sexual orientation, and national or ethnic origin in administration of its employment practices, educational policies, admissions policies, scholarship and loan programs, and athletic or other school-administered programs.

About this Program This program for the 2013–14 Fine Arts season was produced by The Lovett School program chair Stephen Hobbs, and printed by Keystone Press, Inc. From the Fine Arts Director The fine arts program is a crucial part of Lovett’s philosophy of educating “the whole child.” If your child is not actively participating in sustained study of an art form throughout their educational career, they are missing the key to invaluable emotional and intellectual development. Scientific studies have proven the arts promote critical thinking skills, self-expression, self-confidence, discipline, and understanding of group dynamics. Students also attain higher SAT scores and gain an unparalleled edge entering college–see page 77. Mrs. Lovett understood the importance of the arts in education, and I urge you to carefully examine our Fine Arts curriculum with your child and encourage their commitment and sustained study. Taught by professional artists, Lovett students are afforded exceptional opportunities and resources in visual and performing arts—band, chorus, dance, drama, film, orchestra, technical theater and applied lessons in piano, voice, and band and orchestral instruments. The Friends of the Arts volunteer parent organization (headed by Jane Jackson), our Headmaster Billy Peebles, our dedicated trustees, and our parents and students all combine to make Lovett a very special school. I hope you will join Friends of the Arts today and help support the vital component that allows the arts to grow and flourish at Lovett. Membership information is available in the lobby and online. Thank you for supporting the arts at Lovett by attending this performance.

Jay Freer, Director of Fine Arts

Jay Freer, a 1978 Lovett graduate, received a bachelor of fine arts degree in acting from The University of North Carolina School of the Arts and was a Kenan Scholarship winner. He has taught and directed more than 75 plays and musicals at Lovett over the last 27 years. He won the Woodward Award for Excellence in teaching in 1992, the Alumni Excellence in Teaching Award in 2006, and accepted the position of director of Fine Arts in 2007. Professionally, Jay has directed at The Alliance Theater, Aurora Theatre, Theatrical Outfit, and Theatre in the Square, and was also the Founder and Producing Artistic director of Actors Theatre of Atlanta (ATA)—an all-equity professional theatre company that operated from 2000–2006. Among the shows he directed for ATA are The Good Doctor, Collected Stories (Abie Award nominated in 2001), Underneath the Lintel (Southeastern premiere and chosen as the number one play of 2003 by the AJC & Creative Loafing), Talley’s Folly, and Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol. Jay has also taught acting at The North Carolina School of the Arts and The South Carolina Governors School for the Arts, as well as numerous professional classes. He studied in New York with Uta Hagen, considered “one of the greatest actresses and acting teachers of the 20th Century” and continues to study acting with her protégé Ted Brunetti. Together Jay and Ted have founded Ted Brunetti Studios-South, a training resource for professional actors located here in Atlanta. In 2008, The Charles Loridans Foundation recognized Jay for excellence and leadership in theater education. 6 • Lovett

From the Friends of the Arts President

Last year, the Friends of the Art (FOTA) board voted for a new bumper decal design celebrating Lovett’s love for the Fine Arts and incorporating our Lovett Friends of the Arts logo. The new decal design pays homage to Robert Indiana’s iconic Love symbol, shown above left. Indiana designed the LOVE graphic in 1964 during the Pop Art movement and never copyrighted it. This year, the Whitney Museum is presenting a major retrospective of the artist’s work, which remains as impactful today as it did decades ago. Likewise, your child’s involvement in the arts at Lovett will positively affect their lives for decades to come. By the time your child graduates, they will have developed a deep appreciation of the arts, perhaps even discovering a talent or a passion to pursue professionally. Please join me in supporting Jay Freer, the director of Fine Arts, and our faculty by becoming a FOTA member today. Through funds raised by FOTA and efforts of our volunteers, we support our students and the Fine Arts faculty through:

Fully funding the Lower School Spring Arts Festival;

Funding the videography and live streaming of fine arts performances;

Organizing the Faculty Art Show & Sale;

Publishing the Fine Arts Newsletter—emailed monthly to the Lovett community;

Providing scholarships for applied music lessons for students;

Organizing liaisons, who ensure students are chaperoned and fed before performances;

Supporting the funding of the Lovett and the High Museum of Art partnership;

Funding grants to supply new equipment for orchestra, band, and studio art, and continuing educational funding for our Fine Arts faculty; and

Funding and providing support for publicity, play posters, etc. for more than 40 Lovett performances and a dozen gallery displays annually.

Please visit the Fine Arts page of the Lovett website for more information on becoming a FOTA member and helping to enhance our Fine Arts offerings.

Who Needs All the

Drama?

We all need a little drama in our lives. We also need comedy, music and the visual arts. The arts are key to a child’s emotional and intellectual development. Students in Lovett’s Fine Arts program learn critical thinking, self-confidence, discipline and more.

Save the Date Piedmont Driving Club Friday, February 28, 2014 7:00 pm reception, followed by dinner The Great Conversation is Lovett’s premier fundraising event for the Lovett Fine Arts Department. This year the event will be held on the evening of Friday, February 28, 2014, at the historic Piedmont Driving Club in Midtown Atlanta. The Great Conversation is a “not to be missed” event for the Lovett community. It is an evening of fine dining and inspiring conversation with leaders from the Atlanta area and beyond. There are approximately 20 tables of 10 people each with an individual or couple as the “guest conversationalist” at each table. The evening functions just like a friendly dinner while you engage in conversation with an invited leader in the community. Lovett parents are able to select three conversationalists—based on availability and a first-come, first-served basis—and are seated at a table of their choice. Purchase your tickets early to get your first choice, although any table will be very captivating! Conversationalists will talk with you about current events, their subject expertise, and respond to your interests. Past guest conversationalists have included museum directors, curators, corporate CEOs, politicians, authors, athletes, and celebrities. The dinner is designed to be a casual conversation—not a speech. The experience is sure to stimulate your intellect and enliven your senses. And most importantly, the event will fund grants for the Lovett Fine Arts Department that will benefit our children. Information will be available on the Lovett website under the Fine Arts section. If you have any questions or ideas for speakers, please email Jane Jackson at janejackson@ me.com. On behalf of chairs Marlyn Rollins Chapman, Mace Hall, and Jane Jackson, we look forward to seeing you for a delightful evening on February 28.

Fine Arts Partnerships <www.lovett.org/fine-arts>

High Museum of Art Thanks to the generous support of Lovett’s Friends of the Arts (FOTA) and the Lovett Parent Association (LPA), the High Museum of Art recently established a new partnership with The Lovett School. The three-year collaboration allows for unique access to the many resources of the High and further integrates visual arts into Lovett’s curricula. Lovett now has access to the High’s special exhibitions, collections, programs, and museum staff. During this affiliation, Lovett receives the following from the High: Free admission for students and chaperones for school sponsored field trips, as well as free admission for students to attend lectures; Lovett family discounted memberships for purchase at the High and Family Nights to be scheduled later this year; Student internships, career workshop participation, and access to the High’s catalogues in the Lovett libraries; and Professional development programs for faculty designed to foster discussion and idea sharing to further integrate resources from relevant exhibitions into Lovett’s curricula.

Georgia Shakespeare The Lovett School is the first and only school in Atlanta to have a formal internship program with the professional theater company, Georgia Shakespeare. Currently entering its 27th season, Georgia Shakespeare has been nationally recognized for its theatrical work and outstanding educational programs. Lovett faculty and alumni have been working onstage and backstage with this company for several years now, but the creation of an official internship program is a first for both Lovett and Georgia Shakespeare.

Choral Music at Lovett

The choral program at The Lovett School has a rich and distinguished history, dating back to the founding of the institution itself. The school’s philosophy of utilizing a comprehensive curriculum that seeks to develop the total child–intellectually, physically, spiritually, socially, aesthetically, and emotionally, is exemplified through emphasis on the visual and performing arts. During the course of any academic year, over 90 percent of Lovett students participate in the arts. Choral/vocal music at Lovett has enjoyed strong and outstanding leadership over several decades. Lovett choral ensemble students are represented annually in Spivey Hall High School Honor Choir, the GMEA District Five Honor Chorus, and the GMEA All-State Chorus. The Lovett Choirs won the highest scores in every choral division (Men’s Chorus, Women’s Chorus, Chamber Choir, and Concert Choir) at the 2006 and 2007 MusicFest Orlando competition. In 2013, the Lovett choral groups and instrumental ensembles received the coveted Spirit of Orlando Award from the Heritage Music Festival. This award is given to the school that demonstrates support and encouragement of one another and other groups in the festival and best exemplifies a positive model for music education.

The Lovett Singers is a select group of Upper School singers that was established in 1976. They performed under the baton of conductor John Rutter in Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall in November 1991, and sang at Carnegie Hall in November 1996. They won the coveted Grand Choral Championship titles at the MusicFest Competitions in Orlando in 1995, 1996, 1998, 2002, 2004, 2005, and 2007. Lower School General Music The goal of the Lower School General Music program is to build a strong foundation of musical literacy. Through singing, playing instruments, listening, moving and creating, children are exposed to a diverse curriculum designed for active and fun music learning. Children gain skill in improvising, reading and composing their own music, and learn to use music vocabulary to describe what they feel, see and hear. Focused skills, such as singing on pitch, steady beat competency, instrument recognition, and performance and audience etiquette are also taught. Music elements of rhythm, melody, harmony, and form are sequenced age appropriately throughout the music curriculum. Children experience a well-rounded repertoire of music representing different genres and cultures.

Carla Quintero has been a music teacher for more than 25 years and has experience with all ages/levels—from babies to adult. She has specialty certification and training in the area of early childhood music. Carla is a member and past national board member of the Early Childhood Music and Movement Association and is a member of the Atlanta Orff Schulwerk Association, NAfME, and GMEA. She received her B.S. in music education with honors from the University of Maryland. Carla also teaches private piano in her home studio in Roswell. Carla teaches Kindergarten and first grade general music.

Upper School Dance

The Middle and Upper School Dance Program is taught by Mrs. Rebecca Metzger Hirsch, and is designed to introduce many styles of dance to the beginning student, but with a focus on ballet as the foundation of all dances. In the seventh and eighth Grade Dance Classes, students are introduced to Ballet, Hip Hop, Jazz, and Contemporary Dance. In the Upper School Dance Class, students have the opportunity to focus on more detailed aspects of dance, concentrating on the fundamentals of technique (ballet, jazz, and contemporary), proper stretching form, strengthening exercises used in Pilates and Gyrotonics, and the choreographic process. Upper School students also develop their performance ability by performing in the HendrixChenault Theater for a fall and spring dance concert, school assemblies, chapel services, and the Spring Arts Festival. In the Lower School, after-school dance classes are taught by Ms. Brenda Nieto, where students learn ballet, modern, and jazz movements, and also perform in a fall and spring concert. Rebecca Metzger Hirsch, an Atlanta native, left home at 16 to attend the School of American Ballet on a full merit scholarship. A graduate from Professional Children’s School in New York, she was named a U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts, and was one of two dancers to receive the first ever Mae L. Wein Award for students of outstanding promise. At 18, she joined the New York City Ballet, where she performed a variety of corps, soloist, and principal roles over her eight-year career. In film, she has appeared in the PBS series Dance in America and The Balanchine Essays. Though rehearsing, performing, and touring full-time, she also attended Barnard College, graduating magna cum laude. Following her performing career, Mrs. Hirsch became the creative director of the New York City Ballet Workout. She has taught ballet to all levels and ages, from the public schools of New York City to elite ballet academies. Rebecca just returned to Atlanta with her husband and four children. She is thrilled to be a part of the Lovett Fine Arts Department, a place that clearly understands the value of integrating academics with the arts. Lovett

Theater Arts Department The Theater Arts Department is dedicated to teaching an in-depth, multilayered approach to the study of theater and its collaborative nature. Through acting classes, technical theater, and education as audience members, students learn to communicate and expand their imagination, creativity, thoughts, and emotions. In classes and productions, Lovett students discover self-discipline, self-motivation, self-esteem, and social interaction. They also experience a heightened sense of culture, an ability to make critical value judgments, and skills in acting and technical theater. The Theater Arts Department combines these elements to form a curriculum that allows students to explore and experience the theatrical world, instilling a lifelong love of theater. The Lovett Theater Arts Department also hosts a One-Act Play Festival in the fall.

Upper School Technical Theater

Eighth Grade Technical Theater

The Technical Theater classes are designed to provide and develop the skills needed to succeed in the demanding world of technical theater. Offered to Upper School and eighth grade students, this program explores technical theater from conceptual design work to the “nuts and bolts” that help make a production happen. Utilizing both hands-on applications as well as in-class projects, each student will be able to explore, expand, and realize his/her own creative potential. The course covers all aspects of backstage work, including stage lighting and carpentry; scenic, lighting, and costume design; stage management; operations; and fundamental sound design and engineering. 62 • Lovett

Technical Theater Susan McCluskey is one of the Assistant Directors of Fine Arts, Theater Productions Coordinator, and Facilities Manager. She works with the Technical Theater classes in the Upper School and Middle School. Her greatest pleasure is working with the very talented students, kindergarten through seniors, on the theatrical productions throughout the year. Susan graduated Magna Cum Laude from Culver-Stockton College with a B.S. degree in Arts Management. The combined business/arts degree has lead her to a variety of different opportunites, from theatrical stage management to administrative support of corporate presidents, set dressing to bookkeeping, properties design to marketing design. For the past six years, Susan has been active in the Atlanta’s professional theatre arena as a stage manager and props designer, working mostly with Theatre in the Square in Marietta, and with Atlanta Lyric, Synchronicity, Horizon Theatre, and 7 Stages. Her past experience also included work with the Orlando Opera Company, Walt Disney World, Beers Construction, and The Sports Authority. Susan has been a youth sponsor at Sandy Springs Christian Church working “behind-the-scenes” and has gone twice with the Youth Mission trip to Mexico. Brian Patterson was born in the Orlando, Fla., area, but moved to the North Georgia mountains as an elementary school student. He grew up in Hiawassee, Ga., and is the youngest of two siblings. After graduation from high school, he attended one year of college at West Georgia College prior to transferring to the University of Georgia to complete his degree. He is the proud father of 13-year-old Haley. Brian comes to Lovett after many years in theater around the Atlanta area, as well as technical director for North Metro Church in Marietta, Ga. After graduating from the University of Georgia with a degree in theatre, he moved to the Atlanta area and began working in the Atlanta theatre scene. While freelancing the majority of time, Brian also worked for 14 years as the production coordinator for Theatre in the Square in Marietta, and then served as director of technical services at his church prior to joining Lovett this year as technical director. He’s excited for this new opportunity to show young minds the joy he’s found in a career in theater.

The Upper School produces several main productions a year, as well as a one-act play and numerous video productions. Screenwriting students learn to construct solid story outlines, bold characters and believable dialogue in their study of the craft of storytelling. These students also have the opportunity to attend the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, widely considered to be one of the finest film festivals in the world.

GO LIONS! The Arts in Education Eva Edwards Lovett made the following remarks in a presentation on the “Progressive Education Movement” to the Fulton County Pediatric Association: “. . . schools where progressive education is practiced believe that every child has in himself or herself some power of selfexpression, some ability to create. It may be with paint or clay, or hammer and saw; with music or the dance; with dramatic work or story or poem. Whatever be the medium, it is in the expression of these powers and frequently unsuspected abilities that there lies the chance for the greatest personal satisfaction.” Progressive education knows that there is yet much to learn but it is eager and open-minded and keeps its eyes always on the child. Its ideal is that the child should be, in relation to the school, ‘Like a tree planted by the rivers of water, which bringeth forth his fruit in his season.’ Lovett

Why the Arts?

An excerpt from Academic Preparation for College, published by the College Board The arts—visual arts, theater, music, and dance—challenge and extend human experience. They provide means of expression that go beyond ordinary speaking and writing. They can express intimate thoughts and feelings. They are a unique record of diverse cultures and how these cultures have developed over time. They provide distinctive ways of understanding human beings and nature. The arts are creative modes by which all people can enrich their lives both by self-expression and response to the expressions of others. Works of art often involve subtle meanings and complex systems of expressions. Fully appreciating such works requires the careful reasoning and sustained study that lead to informed insight. Moreover, just as thorough understanding of science requires laboratory or field work, so fully understanding the arts involves firsthand work in them. Preparation in the arts will be valuable to college entrants whatever their field of study. The actual practice of the arts can engage the imagination, foster flexible ways of thinking, develop disciplined effort, and build self-confidence. Appreciation of the arts is integral to the understanding of other cultures sought in the study of history, foreign language, and social sciences. Preparation in the arts will also enable college students to engage in and profit from advance study, performance, and studio work in the arts. For some, such college level work will lead to careers in the arts. For many others, it will permanently enhance the quality of their lives, whether they continue artistic activity as an avocation or appreciation of the arts as observers and members of audiences. According to the College Entrance Examination Board: Nationally, students enrolled in fine arts courses score from 6 to 11 percent higher than students not enrolled in any fine arts courses.
