HOW TO HAVE A SUCCESSFUL ANTIOCH RETREAT HERE

Why You Should Join DuDawgs

By BENJAMIN SHAPUTIS

By EMILY DELAMORA

Having the opportunity to take a rejuvenating break in the middle of the academic year is uncalled for by most. Just imagine you have an exam one week, and after your studious weekend, the next week hits you with two or more! This may be a lot or even a little to some, but regardless students usually find extra time to fill their weekends. An excellent filler and Loras tradition, the Antioch retreat, is a wonderful way for students to take a step back; whether it be a step back from classes, homework, athletics, campus work, etcetera, Antioch forces you to take a break (in the best way possible). Spring of 2022 is when I first attended the retreat which so happened to be my first retreat ever. There were breakout groups, life advice sessions, prayer groups, large group sessions, inspirational speakers, and plenty more. Participating in these activities and forcing myself to take time off from everything around me proved to be more difficult than anticipated. Sure, I do not like doing homework all of the time, yes, I would like to spend time with more friends, and of course, I would like to be available to do whatever I want on the weekend. All though these seemed be the things I wanted to

They always say, “A dog is a man’s best friend.” Well, how about making a new best friend while being able to provide service for your community at the same time. This is what DuDawgs is all about here at Loras College. Keeping it short and sweet, here at six reasons why joining DuDawgs is worth investing your time into: The Dogs We have four dogs here at Loras College that are all members of DuDawgs. The dogs here at Loras are, Toski, Davey, Flash, and Atticus. Once the dogs graduate from their service-learning program they go on to help people that suffer from PTSD, psychiatric disorders, and hearing alerts. The dog’s presence here in Dubuque community helps others learn about service dogs while building new connections throughout campus. Ciera and Rachel Ciera Hanson and Rachel Hanson are both great leaders of DuDawgs and have created such a friendly environment throughout the club. Both girls are members of Civic Leaders, the Honors program, and the Psi Chi Honors Society. Being such involved members on campus while managing a busy schedule, the girls have established a very welcoming and sociable

Anti-Procrastination Night led me to procrastinate By BERNADETTE MERCURIO

Last night was the Long Night Against Procrastination event, and it gathered many first years in the library. Because so many familiar faces were in one place, I could not concentrate on my homework. It felt like a big study party in the library more than the formal study session that I pictured. Tutors and teachers of nearly ever y subject helped students with their homework. Stu dy bre a k s , u n i qu e e ve nt s , and raffles kept students visiting different stations. When Tricia, a counselor, brought her two dogs, I visited them as soon as I could. They greeted all the new students who entered the room. I am sure they got overdoses of pats and adoration.

I did not expect Spiritual Life or Counseling Center staff to attend because I do not typically think of them when being productive and studying. However, staff from both departments were there! It reminded me that there are multiple facets to success in school. My favorite event was primal screaming followed by meditation. The counselors directed people who wanted to participate outside (in the freezing cold, might I add). Everyone stood along the snow-powdered sidewalk and screamed for 15 seconds straight. It was therapeutic. And loud. Then, meditation allowed me to relax and reflect on what I could do to prevent procrastination.

The Loras College Duhawks wrestling team kicked off their season this past Saturday at the Luther College Open. After roughly a month of practicing and preparing, Loras finally got to compete against other schools. The Duhaw ks crowned two

champions, senior Shane Liegel (184) and freshman Dustin Bohren (157). After receiving a bye first round, Liegel dominated his next two opponents by fall and technical fall. In the semifinals, however, he met an impressive freshman from Iowa, Mickey Griffith. Liegel looked

J-Term Update for The Lorian

Dewey Party Update

Midterm elections are right around the corner. For many of us at Loras, this will be our first chance to vote. Politicians are promising big changes, but should you care? Most people would say that voting is important. I study philosophy and the opinions of philosophers when it comes to voting might surprise you. I’ll page 3

The UFC held one of the most highly anticipated events this past Saturday. Traveling across the world, UFC 280 took place in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, at the Etihad Area. In the feature bout of the prelims, two top 10-ranked welterweights fought it out. #5 ranked Belal Muhammad (21-3) took on #8 Sean Brady (15-0). Training with former UFC page 3

The Lorian will be publishing this J-Term as many of our staff members will be on campus. If anyone is interested in writing or joining the paper, please reach out to us at lorian@loras.edu for more information. We hope that all Duhawks ace their finals and have a successful end to their semester. As always, thank you for reading The Lorian. We appreciate your continued support.

After the Midterms, the Dewey Party is proud to announce their committment to the 2024 Presidential Election. After seeing these results, we are certain that this great nation is ready for Dewey to take the reigns of the United States of America. Dewey Today. Dewey Tomorrow. Dewey Forever. Long Live Dewey, and God Bless the United States.

environment. Supporting the Community D uD awgs has t he motto, “Changing People’s lives one step at a time.” By joining this club, people get the opportunity to raise and train service dog’s while spreading the awareness of the role animals play in service. Heavily having the value of companionship throughout the club helps create a supported env ironment t hroug hout t he Dubuque community that anybody here at Loras College has the opportunity to partake in. Opportunities for Leadership With President and founder Ciera Hanson and Vice President Rachel Hanson soon to be graduates of Loras college there is an abundant amount of leadership to be filled in DuDawgs. They split these leadership roles by having what they call Head Handlers and Secondary Handlers. A Head Handler is required to live in the house Loras has set aside for the dogs to live in and be their primary caretaker. While a Secondary Handler is the person who takes care of the dogs while the Head Handler is not present. Flexibility DuDawgs being an easy club to join, has several roles that somebody can choose to partake in according to their schedule. These roles include marketing opportunities, business, advocacy and financial organization. There are several opportunities that don’t just involve dogs and serving your community. Having monthly meetings about these roles, DuDawgs has several opportunities in terms of involvement while still being able to work with your busy schedule. Fun Events DuDawgs has several fun events for everyone. In the past, they have hosted a Kahoot night in the Pub while also having educational presentations to learn more about the club. Recently on November 16th they hosted a movie night and rented out the movie Dog. With more exciting events planned in the future like cookie decorating there are plenty of events to get involved in throughout campus.

Black Panther is Now On the Big Screen By EDWARD CLISSOLD

This is my re vie w of Black Pa n t h e r : Wa k a n d a Fo r e v e r. WA R N I N G ! T H E R E A R E SPOILERS IN THIS REVIEW. After a couple of delays, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” has finally been released. After the original “Black Panther” grossed $1.3 billion dollars worldwide in 2018, fans were hoping for a sequel. While I didn’t consider myself to be a big fan of the original, I was pleasantly surprised by the sequel. Unlike a lot of Marvel movies, the film starts up with Shuri, the Wakanda Princess, furiously racing to save T’challa, who is dead. The reason for this is that Chadwick Boseman, the actor who played T’challa, died earlier this year. This is not only sad but also a problem because his character was the leading cast member. I don’t know what happened behind the scenes. However, I’m sure the death of Chadwick Boseman was upsetting to a lot of people just like the death of the Black Panther was upsetting to Shuri. Shuri, who is played by Letitia Write, is now in the leading role. Not only does she have to battle soldiers of Talocan, a city that’s underwater, but also has to come to terms with

losing her brother. Although she is determined to save Wakanda, deep down, she is still suffering from grief. Another person who is feeling grief is Queen Romonda, played by award-winning actress Angela Bassett. Romonda is also facing the challenge of pressure from the United Nations due to her keeping the valuable mineral Vibranium to herself and Wakanda. Throughout all this, she tries to guide Shuri after the death of her brother. The movie does a good job of taking the time to show what Shuri is going through. The film has a lot of great action scenes, but it knows when to slow down and show us what the characters are feeling. One example is when Shuri is sitting next to Romonda at a fireplace. Romonda tries to comfort her by saying that T’challa is still with them. However, she is still frustrated and not able to move on from her brother’s death. The main conflict of the movie revolves around Vibranium, the precious metal that Wakanda has used to advance its technology. In the beginning, Wakanda is accused of destroying a ship that has a Vibranium detector. In reality, the attack was done by the soldiers of Talcon who are worried that their

After a stacked card at UFC 280, the company brings the heat again at UFC 281. Occurring at Madison Square Garden on November 12, the card contains two title fights and a top-ten showdown. With the stage and lights at their brightest, there’s much to look forward to this weekend. One fight to keep an eye on is a lightweight battle between #2-ranked Dustin Poirier and #5-ranked Michael Chandler. The two fighters got into an altercation earlier in the year at UFC 276. Now, they’re settling their beef in the octagon. Looking at Poirier, he’s returning after almost an 11-month layoff. He lost his last fight via submission to then-champion Charles Olivera at UFC 269. Now, he’s refreshed and ready to reclimb the mountain back to the top. Chandler, however, is coming off a vicious knockout of legend Tony Ferguson at UFC 274. Seeking to keep the momentum going, Chandler is also looking to move up the rankings. Both fighters have a fast-paced style and aren’t afraid to throw punches. This fight shapes up to be named Fight of the Night after it’s all said and done. In the co-main event, Carla Esparza and Zhang Weili battle for the women’s strawweight title. Esparaza won the title in her last outing, beating Rose Namajunas by a split decision at UFC 274. After being heavily criticized for her fight against Namajunas being boring and lacking action, Esparaza looks to prove the haters wrong and gain her first title defense. She’ll have to get

through former champion Weili first. Weili knocked out another former champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk back at UFC 275 in her last fight. Aiming to get her belt back, Weili looks to utilize her striking to impose her style on Esparaza. However, the champion’s wrestling could counter-act Weili’s approach if she can get the fight to the ground. It’ll be interesting to see which fighter carries out their style and game plan better on fight night. A highly anticipated trilog y headlines the card. Middleweights Israel Adesanya and Alex Pereira conclude their rivalry when they meet Saturday night. Before their UFC careers, both fighters fought each other twice in kickboxing. Pereira won both meetings, with their first fight ending in a split decision and knockout in the second. The circumstances are different now. Adesanya seeks his sixth straight title defense and extend his threefight win streak after defeating Jared Cannonier at UFC 276. Despite this only being his fourth UFC fight, Pereira is still a very dangerous fighter. Adding to his two kickboxing w i ns ove r Ad e s any a , h e a l s o possesses enormous strength in his hands. Fighting at UFC 276 as well, Pereira knocked out #7-ranked Sean Strickland in his previous fight. As there’s more than a belt on the line, expect fireworks between these two elite athletes. Catch all the action on ESPN+ pay-per-view as the Prelims begin at 7:00 PM CT and the Main Card at 9:00 PM CT.

nation might be exposed. The people of Talocan attacked because their leader, Namor, played by Tenoch Huerta, hid away because he was attacked by humans. He sees exposure as a threat to his people. Although Namor is the antagonist, I feel like I understand why he started this conflict. We saw that some monks tried to kill him because they saw him as a freak. He wants to protect his people and doesn’t want the same fate to happen to them. While fans of the original movie will likely love this sequel, even those who are not big fans (like me) will still find something to love in “Wakanda Forever.” I recommend this movie to anyone looking for a fun yet thoughtful film.

sharp and used his experience to his advantage on his way to an 8-3 decision win. For 1st place, he faced Donovan Corn of Luther, an All-American last year. Again, Liegel wrestled solid in all positions and won 7-1. Similar to Liegel, Bohren also had a dominant day. After a bye first round, he scored bonus points in all his matches on the way to the finals. In his first match, Bohren won by a 15-0 technical fall before securing a pin and a 12-0 major decision in the quarterfinals and semifinals. In the finals, he wrestled Christian Stanek of Iowa State. An early takedown by Stanek didn’t affect him as he controlled the rest of the match in an 8-2 decision win. “Dustin looked good all day,” Coach Glosser says. “As a freshman, it’s impressive how well he rides on top and can score points fast. He’s also good on his feet and works hard.” “Overall, I thought our team did well. The young guys did well too. To compete the way they did at their first college competition was impressive. We’ve got work to do still, but we’re off to a good start.” Loras will be back in action on Wednesday, November 16, in their first home dual against Buena Vista.

HOW TO MAKE THE MOST OF THE ANTIOCH RETREAT CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1

do Antioch provided me with a new experience I’d never forget, what it means to find community. Community and companionship are two things millions of people struggle with, yet sometimes we have it with us even when we think the opposite. One can find community and or companionship in various ways, either through spending time with friends or family, a conversation with a stranger, or even a general club meeting. Although I felt like I was struggling with this during Antioch, I have finally realized that I already had what I longed for with me, that being my relationship with God. Returning to the overall topic of this article, Antioch can be an amazing means of taking a break and can even serve as a better way of finding your own community. Therefore, I will happily give a list of my advice to further enhance and enjoy your Antioch experience. First, find a way to meditate and relieve yourself of any general anxieties or fears of small group talk. Secondly, take the necessary steps to fully engage and share your personal experiences within these small group talks. This can be done either by connecting personal experiences with others’, finding common interests, or even just asking someone how their day was. Thirdly, it is essential to open yourself to new ideas or interpretations of religion. Not every student is Christian nor Catholic at our beloved institution, thus there is no need to prejudice or bias your beliefs one way or another. And finally, give your best effort to surrounding yourself with your new community. Taking a break from social media, spending time with the new people you meet, and enjoying your meals together will truly engrave your new friendships and belonging into stone. Thus, best of luck to all of our new, future, and past Antiochers!

The counselors encouraged everyone to sit or lie down in a comfortable position. It was over in a snap because the dark room and comfy floor lulled me to sleep. Additionally, I won a t-shirt from the raffle! If you have any doubts about going, I urge you to attend because professors can answer any questions you may have, peers can mentor you with homework, and study breaks provide community building activities. I may not have gotten much homework done, but it was a successful night.
