INTEGRATING STRENGTH AND SECURITY INTO THE SILENT SERVICE

Seven decades after the first nuclear-powered submarine – USS Nautilus – was launched in 1954 to revolutionise NATO’s strategic capabilities, governments around the world are re-investing in a new era of nuclear defence. For many, launching the next-generation of ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs) and attack submarines (SSNs) remains the top priority to reinforce national interests with unmatched authority well into the 2060s.

Operating within the planet’s most inhospitable underwater environments, these top-secret machines silently roam the depths to collect information, protect sub-sea infrastructure or maintain a credible second-strike capability 365-days-ayear. Engaged in a high-stakes game of ‘blind man’s bluff’, courageous men and women crew these engineering marvels for months on end with global responsibility upon their shoulders. In this darkened, high-pressure realm, their trust lies with their superiors, their crew mates and the precisionengineered components that strengthen every aspect of their highly-classified existence under the waves.

Here, in the LSJ’s inaugural cover story, we’ll explore how the LoneStar Group is building on a 30-year legacy of nuclear expertise and why we’re fortifying steadfast relationships with governments and major defence contractors who are committed to upholding security, sovereignty and balance in an increasingly complex world.

‘THE LONESTAR GROUP HAS SUPPLIED NUCLEAR DEFENCE PROJECTS GLOBALLY FOR OVER THREE DECADES.’

ENTERING THE THIRD NUCLEAR AGE.

In response to evolving threats and growing geopolitical instability, global military expenditure has risen to unprecedented levels in 2025. In Europe alone, spending has risen by a reported 17 per cent to $693 billion over the last twelve months. This represents the steepest increase since the close of the Cold War. Most recently, the UK government announced a commitment to increase defence spending to 2.5 percent of GDP from April 2027, with an ambition to reach at least 3 percent by the next parliament.

Introducing the far-reaching plans outlined within the Strategic Defence Review 2025, both the UK Prime Minister and the Secretary of State indicated that ‘the world has changed’. In this new reality, the country is setting a course to become a NATO leader with strengthened nuclear, technological and conventional warfighting capabilities. It’s hoped that this national resolve will act as a catalyst for growth – driving jobs and prosperity through new partnerships with industry, radical procurement reforms and by backing UK businesses.

Central to this fresh investment is a modernised nuclear deterrent that will form the cornerstone of the UK’s commitment to NATO and global security; a goal that’s set to transform critical elements of the defence industry. The move will directly support 30,000 highly-skilled jobs, create 9,000 additional roles further down the supply chain and double the apprentice workforce over the next decade. In addition, a further £15 billion investment has been set aside for the renewal of the UK’s sovereign nuclear warhead programme, with additional budget targeted at modernising critical infrastructure including docks and storage facilities over the coming years.

‘WE’RE PROUD TO HELP OUR DEFENCE INDUSTRY PARTNERS BUILD, FORTIFY AND SUSTAIN A SAFER, MORE RESILIENT FUTURE.’

CHANGING OF THE GUARD.

The UK’s continuous at-sea deterrent (CASD) began in April 1969. Known as Operation Relentless, the mission requires at least one fully-armed SSBN on patrol. Half a century later, Relentless endures as the MOD’s longest running military operation in the country’s history.

CASD was originally provided by Resolution-class submarines carrying the Polaris system, having formally assumed care for the UK’s strategic nuclear deterrent in June 1969 from the RAF’s V-force. The responsibility became solely submarine-based in the 1990s, just as the first of four Vanguard-class submarines and their updated Trident ballistic missile systems went to sea. Today, it’s still the Vanguard SSBNs that maintain the UK’s deterrent, but with the decision to maintain CASD into the foreseeable future, the first of a next-generation of Dreadnought-class submarines is already under construction. With its first steel cut in October 2016 and its keel laid down in March 2025, the build is progressing as planned.

Dreadnought – aptly named after the UK’s inaugural nuclear submarine launched in 1960 – is expected to enter service in the early 2030s and have a service life of at least three decades. The three remaining Dreadnought submarines set to be commissioned will be named Valiant, Warspite and King George VI.

In parallel with the Dreadnought project, the UK will also be significantly expanding its conventionally armed nuclear-powered submarine fleet, with up to 12 new SSN-AUKUS boats to be built.

OUR RIGHT-FIRST-TIME MINDSET AND RELENTLESS PURSUIT OF EXCELLENCE ENSURES EVERY FIRSTLEVEL FASTENER PERFORMS FLAWLESSLY UNDER THE MOST DEMANDING CONDITIONS.

PERFORMANCE UNDER PRESSURE.

As an island nation, the UK has long sought to maintain a delicate equilibrium between security and inherent vulnerability. For centuries, the seas that surround it and the world-class seafarers it has nurtured have been fundamental to its trade, communication and defence.

In 2025, the UK’s growing demand for critical future minerals such as lithium, graphite, cobalt and nickel depend on intricate global supply chains. Up to 72 per cent of the country’s gas imports came from Norway or via north sea pipelines. 46 per cent of all food imports come from international shipping. Over 95 per cent of global data is carried in undersea cables, many of which are linked to the UK. Now, more than ever, it’s imperative to protect these vital arteries – a mission that remains one of many primary objectives for the silent service.

Because of this, the operational demands of the UK’s modern submarines are always increasing. SSBN’s must remain an omnipresent yet completely undetectable strategic warning to all foes, while SSN’s must be prepared to face a variety of clandestine missions, from anti-submarine warfare and land attack to protection patrols, special operations and intelligence gathering.

In essence, as each new generation goes to sea, submarines are expected to operate at greater depths, at higher speeds for extended durations, all while minimizing acoustic signatures and carrying ever greater lethality. This means innovations in materials, technology, engineering capabilities, weapons and detection systems require near constant advancement. The LoneStar Group has experienced this evolution firsthand, having been engaged to supply high-performance, precision-engineered approved and accredited components to Vanguard, Trafalgar, Astute and now Dreadnought-class boats. To meet these increasing needs, our services, products and expertise must surpass the very highest standards of integrity. In a life and death underwater sphere, where the parameters for performance are always pushed to the limit, there’s simply no room for error. Especially so when the benchmarks for excellence continue to rise.

Michael Lloyd, Head of Group Nuclear and Defence Sales, LoneStar Group.

Where once a 149.9-metre-long Vanguard submarine was expected to displace 16,900 tonnes, dive to depths exceeding 250 metres and travel at 25 knots, the latest Dreadnought will be 152.9 metres long, displace 17,200 tonnes, be able to withstand extreme deep-water pressures and still maintain submerged speeds of 20 knots plus. In addition, Dreadnought will include 42.2 km of piping and more than 347km of electrical cables. Equipped with a pressurised water reactor providing power and propulsion, along with a plethora of scientifically advanced electronic systems, sensors and tactical weapons including the Trident II D5 missile system, Dreadnought is set to mark a giant leap forward for the Royal Navy and its trusted defence industry contractors.

TO THE HEART OF NATIONAL SECURITY.’

Michael Lloyd, Head of Group Nuclear and Defence Sales, LoneStar Group.

ABSOLUTE DEPENDABILITY.

The LoneStar Group has supplied nuclear defence projects globally for over three decades. This longstanding expertise is led by our LoneStar Fasteners (American U.S naval defence sector), LoneStar Fasteners Europe and Hydrobolt teams – the latter two having merged into LoneStar Fasteners Hydrobolt (LSFH).

After engaging with Fit For Nuclear (F4N), key stakeholders carried out a sustained strategic review of our capabilities, culture and certification to surpass the most stringent of nuclear sector requirements across the entire LoneStar Group. During this time, our significant nuclear offering continued to expand across LoneStar Leeds, Triplefast Middle East and Tachart Ltd, who all brought additional understanding to the group in 2024.

Committed to continuously improve as a world-class employer, manufacturer and supplier in this vital sector, the LoneStar Group has adopted a ‘right-first-time’ nuclear mindset, pushing us to deliver zero defect components to our defence industry partners with watertight documentation. Why? Because when first level fasteners are fitted throughout a submarine, they’re expected to remain in situ for 25 years plus without replacement or repair. Their failure could result in catastrophic consequences for crew and platform, a reality that makes absolute attention-to-detail and faultless execution paramount to our everyday.

Richard Pickles.

STRENGTH IN NUMBERS:

WHY NO ONE LEADS ALONE

In a world where mission-critical integrity speaks louder than words, candid conversations with the figureheads of global industry are few and far between. In the case of Richard Pickles, CEO of the LoneStar Group, public interviews are just as rare. Described as the group’s engine, Richard brings tireless energy and resilience to high-pressure environments. Skilfully adept at working behind the scenes, he powers, synchronises and champions the collective strength of every business unit, team and individual on the drive towards shared success.

As we sit down in honour of launching the LSJ, Richard reflects on his time in role to date, lessons in leadership, the group’s customer-first approach and why the future of our world demands clarity, collaboration and an unwavering belief in the ‘One LoneStar’ mindset.

Richard, you’ve recently overseen a global repositioning and the launch of the LSJ. It’s a dynamic time to be leading the LoneStar Group, isn’t it?

The world’s desire for more energy – and in turn more energy security – is growing so rapidly that many of our end markets are in a long-term growth cycle. Between now and 2050, all energy sources, whether traditional or renewables will be needed, as well as the multiple industry solutions required to bring that power to market. That reality creates an enormous opportunity for everyone within the LoneStar Group. With the support of our new ownership, who we’ve been working with for two years now, we have a clear long-term vision to ensure we make the most of an exciting future. The repositioning and this new communication platform are all part of that vision.

What does ‘our world strengthens yours’ (OSWY) mean to you and what does it tell our customers?

In a real growth business like ours, you must be focused on the customer. Everything is always about the customer. Their challenges, their markets, their needs, their worlds. OWSY is more than a tagline or a piece of disposable marketing, it’s an exercise

in changing a traditional industry, which is often quite introspective, into something meaningful. We believe OWSY makes a clear statement about our values and mission, as well as communicating to customers our role in their success. It’s a mentality we want to run through everyone within the business. If we deliver exceptional expertise, products and services that strengthen our customers’ success, then naturally, we’ll succeed too. That elevated position and collaborative spirit aligns us perfectly with the values of our blue-chip customers as we head into a defining period of human history, together.

Can you explain the significance of the ‘One LoneStar’ mindset?

‘One LoneStar’ is who we are as an organisation. It’s about self-reflection and being more confident in communicating to customers about our culture, our image, our mentality and how we operate at scale as a combined force. The result is we’re transforming a collection of 13 successful business units into one globally integrated powerhouse that offers 10 market-leading products and services, five of which are truly unique. By operating as ‘One LoneStar’, we want to show how the breadth, depth and overall strength of the organisation can and will make tangible positive impacts to real-world projects.

How does the LoneStar Group stand apart within an ultra-competitive marketplace?

‘One LoneStar’ is beginning to take hold within our businesses and within our customer portfolios. The result of that is now, more than ever before, our customers are seeing the benefits of working with one partner who can offer truly global capabilities, no matter where in the world they’ve accessed the LoneStar Group. This enables us to deliver a broader scope of solutions, consistent experiences, flexible resource allocations, fewer hand-offs, more value, supply chain resilience, increased efficiency, enhanced quality assurance, deep geopolitical understanding and improved local service excellence worldwide. All of which support our market-leading credentials. Suddenly, that truly unmatched global scale begins to really mean something.

‘THE LONESTAR GROUP IS STRONGER THAN EVER, BY OPERATING AS ONE.’

You’ve recently celebrated two years in post. What’s been the biggest challenge and reward?

We overcome challenges on a near daily basis. Problem-solving and finding mission or safety critical solutions is what we do. In terms of rewards, I’ve experienced enormous satisfaction in seeing our organisation evolve into one coherent global entity - seeing a collective of brilliant entrepreneurial business units, operating efficiently through mutual support, collaboration and direction. That’s what I’m most proud of, making that change alongside all our business leaders and in turn, each of our 1300 employees. Now I can confidently say to customers that the LoneStar Group is stronger than ever by operating as one.

How have you navigated such a turbulent geopolitical and economic environment in that time?

It’s important to note that despite that turbulence, some of which has been serious and significant, industry doesn’t stop; it evolves. We’re lucky that we manufacture and supply in key marketplaces across the world. That means we’re always where our customers are, we’re flexible, and we’re quick to respond. If we’re close to our customers, we’re surpassing their needs and we’re strengthening their world, we’ll always be on the right track.

What are the most pressing issues affecting our customers and the wider industry today?

The demands on present and future supply chains are immense. Being able to keep pace with the ever-increasing energy needs of a transforming world is the biggest challenge and opportunity global industry has faced for generations. We’ve got to be ready to respond to that and with supportive leaders, teams and shareholders across the group, I believe we’re uniquely placed to do that. The macro picture is, if you’re working in traditional or renewable

Richard sharing time and knowledge with the UK’s apprentices.

When not travelling

energy, you’re going to be faced with enormous workflow pressure. That’s what we all need to prepare for. Some global leaders in the production of key equipment for the energy sector are planning for up to 80 per cent growth in production output for 2026.

That’s a significant challenge to overcome.

That pace of change – in all aspects of life, business and industry – continues to accelerate. How do you ensure the LoneStar Group remains a cutting-edge organisation?

We’ve been here for over 50 years, in different forms, and we’ll continue to be here long into the future. What looks like a ‘simple’ product from the outside –bolts, fasteners, gaskets, seals – is in fact a universal, era-defying, near timeless set of innovations. These products were needed in the first pump, pipeline, submarine and turbine; they’ll continue to be vital for generations to come. Of course, the demands on these products are increasing all the time. The standards for performance, integrity and efficiency are only going in one direction.

We’ll continue to be the benchmark for those standards by primarily investing in our people and securing long-term retention of deep industry and organisational expertise. It’s through them that we’ll respond to changes in technology, environment or application. They’ll be the ones navigating us forward, away from inertia, ensuring the world doesn’t change from under our feet.

You’re supported by a team of global leaders across the group. What qualities unite you all?

Successful leaders within the LoneStar Group are quick to recognise that the organisation is rich with experience at every level. We’re full of passionate people who are here to do an excellent job. The key to leadership is harnessing that power and deploying the ‘One LoneStar’ mindset effectively. Everybody within the organisation has a responsibility to show those leadership qualities. Why? Because everybody’s work touches the customer. That really matters.

Looking ahead, what can customers expect from the LoneStar Group in 2025 and beyond?

We’re incredibly proud of what we’re building here at the LoneStar Group. We want to celebrate that more. We’re proud of our people, our knowledge and our outputs. The markets are growing, our customers are growing, and we’ve got steadfast shareholders who are allowing us to invest for the long-term. The opportunity ahead is vast. So it’s down to us all to keep that virtuous circle, that vortex of positivity, spinning in the right direction. We’ve got to grab onto the tailwinds of our hard-earned momentum and approach what comes next with a great deal of combined optimism, determination and integrity. If we do that, we’ll continue to go from strength to strength, as one.

between global businesses, Richard is based at Universal Point.

Fasteners Hydrobolt Ltd. LoneStar

COMBINED EXCELLENCE. UNMATCHED CAPABILITY

Late in 2023, LoneStar Fasteners Europe and Hydrobolt joined together to form a single merged entity now known as LoneStar Fasteners Hydrobolt Ltd. In an exciting move for colleagues and customers alike, this new venture harnesses the combined strengths of two LoneStar Group businesses, creating one of the largest critical bolting manufacturers and distributors in Europe.

Far more than a symbolic integration of people, products, technical capabilities and enviable customer portfolios, this strategic synthesis completes the creation of a true centre of manufacturing excellence, future-ready to reinforce our industry-leading reputation.

INTRODUCING P113.

P113 is a new state-of-the-art warehousing and distribution hub, bespoke-built for the exacting requirements of LSFH.

Increasing our storage capacity to over 9,000 on-site locations, P113 represents the very latest advancement of global supply chain and distribution innovation.

In the process of fitting out this site, our teams worked tirelessly to ensure the utmost attention to detail was deployed across every element of the project. The result? A nextgeneration warehouse precisely configured to surpass the needs of colleagues and customers in the era of continuous innovation.

PLANNING FOR SUCCESS.

Augmented by the launch of P113, our integration of people, processes and capability has seen the entire former Hydrobolt business – along with its significant pool of key machines – make the move from an aging site on Dixon Street to Universal Point. Here, all operations are now supported by one ERP platform.

‘Merging

two factories is compared to performing surgery on a marathon runner mid-race. It’s incredibly complex. Every change must be meticulously planned and executed without disruption. That’s exactly what our team faced and delivered when asked to combine two global leaders into a single, world-class facility.’

Phil Worrall, Head of Operations, LoneStar Group.

STRENGTH IN TOGETHERNESS.

Throughout the process, our people, our project team and external industry experts worked closely with every department across the three sites to deliver end-to-end process mapping from order pipeline, through every stage of the sales and operational process, right up to final dispatch.

Building on this progress, open collaboration continued with key stakeholders to finalise a futurestate report, detailing how the merged businesses will operate safely and efficiently to minimise disruptions for our valued customers.

Once all recommendations were considered, the combined team began to meticulously redesign the layout of the entire factory floor within Universal Point to accommodate an exciting new reality.

From retiring redundant technologies to building first-off inspection offices and constructing an industry-leading quality suite, a complex operational workflow has been reimagined to optimise our manufacturing output and ensure we continue to meet our customers’ product integrity standards.

This true ‘One LoneStar’ achievement wouldn’t have been possible without the unwavering support of all colleagues within our united community. Their knowledge, dedication, commitment and passion ensured that each key decision has been made in total confidence, enabling us to protect the expertise, wellbeing and safety of our people while continuing to meet the growing critical demands of our blue-chip customers.

Liquified

Natural Gas.

SECURING A VITAL FUEL SUPPLY ON THE WAY TO NET ZERO

As the world accelerates towards a carbonfree future, Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) is reemerging as a ‘clean’ fossil fuel that’s yet to reach its full potential on the global stage. With overall demand forecast to rise by 60 per cent by 2040 – largely driven by new market growth and significant emission reduction targets in heavy industry – this ‘traditional’ fuel still has a significant role to play in the modern era.

Our precision-engineered components help facilitate the movement of vital LNG from production sites to consuming nations.

POWERING THE ENERGY TRANSITION.

LNG is a gas that’s been converted into a liquid state by cooling it to -162°C (-260°F). Stored at an ambient pressure, LNG’s volume is reduced by 600 times when compared to its gaseous form. Colourless, odourless, nontoxic, non-corrosive, LNG is a lower-carbon alternative to other fossil fuels. Unable to ignite in its liquid state, it can be transported economically and safely over long distances – especially via shipping routes – without losing its fundamental characteristics. This makes LNG a compelling energy choice for regions, cities and industries unable to access gas field pipelines due to distance, geopolitics, construction constraints or cost.

LNG met around 20 per cent of the world’s energy consumption in 2024, proving its importance in providing grid flexibility while helping to address the intermittency of renewable power. With more than 170 million tonnes

of new LNG supply predicted to be available by 2030, this versatile fuel is set to underpin the energy transition through a range of benefits to industry and consumers.

• LNG is the cleanest hydrocarbon that can be used across energy sectors.

• It produces 40 per cent less C02 than coal and 30 per cent less than oil.

• It has a 40 per cent lower density than diesel.

• It emits significantly less soot, dust or particulates compared to coal and oil.

• Reserves are abundant, accessible and reliable.

• Its safe liquid state reduces barriers for export and import.

• It powers homes, industry, vehicles and shipping.

• LNG mitigates demand volatility within the energy transition.

LNG – a plentiful natural resource destined to power the world’s energy transition.

(MT) in 2024 to 142 MT by 2030 – an 85 per cent increase.

All these LNG programmes will require extensive use of high-integrity fasteners and bolting systems across demanding cryogenic, modular, structural, onshore and offshore marine settings. The fundamental linchpin to LNG’s long-term integrity?

A wide array of precision-engineered components designed to surpass the highest standards for mechanical strength, material traceability and performance in corrosive, high-temperature service conditions.

OUR MISSION-CRITICAL CAPABILITIES.

As global LNG projects progress, suppliers with proven experience in industrial bolting, rapid delivery logistics and compliance with international codes and specifications are essential to ensuring successful sourcing, processing, transportation and delivery.

Whether supporting new build liquefaction trains, brownfield expansions or marine loading systems, the LoneStar Group will ensure structural integrity, ultimate reliability and on-schedule, firstright-time delivery in the world’s most challenging environments.

Through our strategically-placed regional manufacturing and supply facilities, our global teams have extensive hands-on experience of executing

A SWELL OF MARKET COMMITMENT.

Looking ahead, the global LNG industry is undergoing significant expansion, with key regions such as North America and the Middle East investing in large-scale infrastructure. Here, numerous terminals are currently under construction or in advanced planning stages.

The United States and Canada are pioneering a new wave of liquefaction terminals and export facilities. Similarly, Qatar – the world’s largest LNG exporter – is undergoing a major capacity expansion of the North Field East and North Field South projects. These developments are set to increase the nation’s LNG output from 77 million (metric) tonnes

critical energy transition projects. Our unmatched capabilities ensure we can surpass even the largest set of diverse requirements, providing local support, stock holding and phased supply of highperformance approved and accredited components either directly to the end user, to OEM supply chains or EPCs.

If you’re embarking on an LNG journey, or want to discuss how we’re uniquely positioned to strengthen the global energy transition, please contact mark.jennings@lonestargroup.com.

EXCEEDING API REQUIREMENTS FOR HIGH-STAKES OIL AND GAS OPERATIONS

The oil and gas industry rightfully holds its suppliers to the most demanding accreditation standards anywhere in the global economy. With operational safety, environmental responsibility, corporate reputations, critical infrastructure and high value end-product at stake, flawless performance is non-negotiable.

Many of the world’s leading oil and gas majors – including Shell, Chevron, and Exxon – are at the forefront of driving these stringent quality requirements throughout their critical operational applications and supply chains. Such measures include the requirement to possess the latest API accreditations for the qualification, production and documentation of bolting systems used within the petroleum and natural gas industries.

When precision components are expected to perform flawlessly in the harshest conditions imaginable, accreditation isn’t just an operational nice-to-have, it’s a non-negotiable commitment to safety, efficiency and environmental stewardship.

SETTING THE BENCHMARK.

The American Petroleum Institute’s (API) certification programme is one of the world’s most influential marks of trust, proficiency and accreditation excellence. In its first

100 years, API has developed more than 800 standards to enhance operational safety, reduce waste, increase efficiencies, bring products to market quicker and improve environmental protection across the oil and gas industry. This includes setting the requirement of standards 20E and 20F for the qualification, production and documentation for bolting used in the petroleum and natural gas industries in 2017. These API credentials are in turn mandated by the major O&G majors to ensure ultimate adherence to these most critical of industry regulations.

A STAMP OF INTEGRITY.

Operating at the cutting-edge of the manufacture and supply of high-performance, precision-engineered, approved and accredited oil and gas components, the LoneStar Group is already live with our API 20E 3rd Edition capabilities. Enabling us to respond to any API requests of our bluechip customers throughout the global marketplace. This update also complements our extensive API approvals and accreditations across the entire global LoneStar Group (see API Composite List for details).

Alongside our latest API achievements, we’re also proud holders of numerous oil and gas industry certifications including: Merkblatt W0, PED, and Norsok.

Prioritising safety, efficiency and environmental stewardship in the world’s harshest environments.

OUR COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE IS YOURS. More than a set of administrative or project tender processes to get through, these exceptionally-hard-to-pass certifications are paramount to the core values held by every colleague within the LoneStar Group. It’s who we are.

By aligning with the highest international standards and earning the confidence of numerous oil and gas majors, the LoneStar Group is proud to deliver rigour and strength to every component, project and customer working to power the world’s progress.

Leaders of

The United Kingdom has a proud history of pioneering achievement in manufacturing, engineering and technology. From the steam locomotive to the jet engine, the telephone to the world wide web, a dizzying array of the world’s greatest breakthroughs owe their beginnings to British ingenuity. Despite this, the country has experienced a 34 per cent decline in engineering and manufacturing apprenticeships since 2016; a worrying trend that the LoneStar Group is helping to reverse with an industry-leading training programme that continues to strengthen our expert teams. FORGING UK TALENT FIT FOR THE FUTURE

tomorrow.

‘I quickly realised this was the hands-on role for me. There’s always something new to learn inside the Oracle Test Laboratory when working alongside such a strong, professional team. It’s the perfect environment to grow my confidence and knowledge. I’m now

a fully qualified Lab Technician, working to progress my skills in the years ahead. The aspiration is to become Senior Lab Technician, then one day, the Lab Manager.’ Lewis Cope, Laboratory Technician, 20.

A CATALYST FOR CHANGE.

Engineering and manufacturing generate an estimated £645bn gross value added (GVA) to the UK’s economy annually – equivalent to 32 per cent of the country’s total economic output. Furthermore, a recent report commissioned by EngineeringUK found that engineering occupations account for only 19 per cent of the country’s workforce. Meanwhile, vacancies for engineering roles have increased by more than 55 per cent over the last five years with unfilled positions accounting for 25 per cent of all UK job listings. These statistics suggest that the skills gap in engineering is greater – and of more consequence – than almost all other areas of employment.

In a challenging industry and geo-political context, with the UK navigating the ongoing impacts of Brexit, the pandemic, European war and climate change, it’s more vital than ever for LoneStar Group businesses to nurture a talented workforce that’s fit for the future.

With this goal in mind, our UK businesses have been running successful apprenticeship programmes for 55 years and counting. Working alongside education partners, we’re facilitating clear professional pathways into fulfilling engineering careers for more young people than ever before. By embedding ambitious, diverse, forwardlooking apprentices into the teams of tomorrow – augmented by the unmatched knowledge of our longstanding colleagues – we’re preparing to overcome the planet’s biggest engineering challenges with renewed confidence.

Inspired to pursue a dynamic and hands-on career, Lewis has found his place.

Our ‘culture of learning’ boosts the development of talented apprentices like Josh.

INVESTING IN PEOPLE, KNOWLEDGE AND PROSPERITY.

In 2024, the LoneStar Group welcomed our largest intake of apprentices yet, with 19 individuals joining our UK businesses across LoneStar Leeds, LoneStar Fasteners Hydrobolt and Tachart Bolt & Nut Manufacturing Co. Upon joining, these apprentices are rotated around key departments – ranging from laboratory testing to marketing and sales – over an eight-week period to gain a greater understanding of available pathways and how modern engineering businesses function. Following this introductory phase, supported by weekly HR-led feedback sessions, the apprentices begin their journey, working towards an eventual operational or commercial career.

Inspired by the fact over 15% of our workforce remains within the LoneStar Group for 10 years or more, with an incredible three per cent achieving 40+ years of service, our apprentices are exceptionally well placed to build a meaningful career within an industryleading business.

Now in 2025, a record number of new apprentices are in the process of joining their 1,300 global colleagues to help the LoneStar Group realise our ambitions to build a stronger, more rewarding and profitable world.

‘When I was about to join, there were several nuclear projects underway within the business. That inspired me to get involved and learn more about the trade. I started as a Level 2 Lean Manufacturing Apprentice. I’m now completing my Level 3 Lean Technician Apprenticeship. The culture of learning here is incredible, not only receiving constructive feedback, but also getting the support to grow towards my goal of becoming a Senior Quality Engineer.’

Josh Ejlli, Quality Engineer, 20.

To learn more about our UK apprenticeship programmes, please contact recruitment@lsfe.com.

‘I began my apprenticeship in 1985 and have been with the LoneStar Group ever since. It’s been a journey all about learning new techniques, processes and problem-solving skills. There’s never a day wasted in this career. My role has evolved over the years from Apprentice to Engineer, Team Leader, Production Engineer, Production Manager and now to Engineering Production Manager. I’m still striving to carry out my job to the best of my abilities and I’m at the age now where I can pass my skills on to the next generation of great engineers. I find that incredibly rewarding.’

Gary Demaine, Production Engineering Manager, 56.

From apprentice to building a 40-year career, Gary is a shining example of dedicated long service.

Best advice you’ve ever received?

Be the solution, not the noise. Fail fast, learn faster. Promote yourself but do the work first.

What’s your idea of an ideal day?

I get a great sense of achievement when I can perform to the best of my abilities Monday to Friday. Our work environment is positive, especially when achieving

goals together. The weekend is for family, where I can spend time relaxing with my son and my husband, perhaps visiting a lovely place somewhere.

What person, past or present, do you most admire?

My mother. She raised me in a difficult time. She was always by my side when I needed her most.

Name one item you couldn’t live or work without and why.

The mobile phone. It’s essential for communication, information gathering and assistance. Away from work, it’s a source of entertainment too.

How do you clear your head?
