We think.

IT’S TIME to interrogate the gap between our theoretical studies and our everyday practice. As a new generation of architects we are facing a great challenge: the role of the architect within our built environment is becoming ever more marginalised, at a time where the need for architecture to improve the way we live and work, to allow us to live more fulfilled lives is urgent and critical.

E’ TEMPO di indagare il divario tra i nostri studi teorici e il lavoro quotidiano. Come nuova generazione di architetti affrontiamo una grande sfida: il ruolo dell’architetto nell’ambiente costruito sta diventando sempre più marginale, in un momento in cui la necessità di architettura per migliorare il modo in cui viviamo e lavoriamo, per permetterci di avere vite più piene, è urgente ed essenziale.

Today’s architecture is formed by abstract, standardised processes, global production chains and complex bureaucratic frameworks.

Modernity has emancipated us from local boundaries and rudimentary tasks allowing us more heads pace to innovate, but at the same time it has left many people in a social vacuum and a constant search for identity.

L’architettura di oggi è fatta di processi astratti e standardizzati, catene di produzione globale e complesse strutture burocratiche. La modernità ci ha emancipato dai confini locali e da mansioni rudimentali donandoci più spazio mentale per innovare, ma allo stesso tempo ha lasciato molte persone in un vuoto sociale e alla costante ricerca di un’identità.

We may be connected more than ever before, yet a sense of loneliness and isolation is prevalent. Architecture should actively create FREE SPACE to catalyse and celebrate communal interaction, rather than separating or accumulating private assets. We need architecture that allows for new memories to be formed: no more designing a world that perpetuates isolation. We believe that architecture can conceive new ways of living together, to develop a collective consciousness that exists through memories that bind and connect people in ways technological advancements alone never will.

Siamo connessi come non mai, eppure prevale un senso di solitudine e isolamento. L’architettura dovrebbe creare attivamente SPAZIO LIBERO per catalizzare e celebrare interazione sociale, anzichè separare o accumulare beni privati. C’è bisogno di un’architettura che permetta di creare nuove memorie: non più progetti di un mondo che perpetua isolamento. Crediamo che l’architettura possa concepire nuovi modi di vivere insieme, sviluppare una coscienza collettiva che esiste attraverso memorie che uniscono, e connettere le persone in modi che lo sviluppo tecnologico da solo non farà mai.

We believe in the value of COEXISTENCE. Consumer culture, such as a private home, car or all-inclusive holiday, does not define who we are.

We define and identify ourselves through interaction with our friends, neighbours and strangers around us.

We believe one can only live a fulfilled life in a space that allows for and encourages social resonance.

Crediamo nel valore della COESISTENZA. La cultura consumistica, come quella della casa privata, dell’auto o delle vacanze all-inclusive, non definisce chi siamo.

Definiamo noi stessi attraverso l’interazione con i nostri amici, vicini e sconosciuti attorno a noi. Crediamo che qualcuno possa vivere davvero una vita piena solo in uno spazio che permetta e incoraggi una rilevanza sociale.

Es ist Zeit, die Lücke zwischen unseren theoretischen Studien und unserer täglichen Praxis zu hinterfragen. Als neue Architektengeneration stehen wir vor einer großen Herausforderung: Die Rolle des Architekten in unserer gebauten Umwelt wird immer marginalisierter, in einer Zeit, in der der Einfluss von Architektur auf unser Leben und unsere Arbeit drastisch ist.

Die heutige Architektur besteht aus abstrakten, standardisierten Prozessen, globalen Produktionsketten und komplexen bürokratischen Rahmenbedingungen. Die Moderne hat uns von lokalen Grenzen und rudimentären Aufgaben befreit, die uns mehr Kopfraum zur Innovation geben, aber gleichzeitig viele Menschen in einem sozialen Vakuum und einer ständigen Suche nach Identität zurückgelassen.

Wir sind vielleicht mehr verbunden als jemals zuvor, dennoch ist ein Gefühl der Einsamkeit und Isolation vorherrschend. Architektur sollte aktiv FREIRÄUME schaffen, um kommunale Interaktion zu katalysieren und zu feiern, anstatt privates Vermögen zu aufzuteilen oder zu akkumulieren.

Wir brauchen eine Architektur, die es ermöglicht, neue Erinnerungen zu formen. Wir glauben an neue Formen des Zusammenlebens, um ein kollektives Bewusstsein zu entwickeln, dass die Menschen in einer Art und Weise verbindet, wie es technologische Fortschritte allein niemals tun werden.

Wir glauben an den Wert von COEXISTENCE. Konsumkultur, wie ein privates Zuhause, Auto oder ein All-Inclusive-Urlaub, definiert nicht, wer wir sind. Wir definieren und identifizieren uns selbst durch die Interaktion mit unseren Freunden, Nachbarn und Fremden um uns herum. Wir glauben, dass man nur ein erfülltes Leben in einem Raum führen kann, der soziale Resonanz ermöglicht und fördert.

We make.

A collective of graduates from the newly founded London School of Architecture and German architecture practice Lindstedt, are working together to challenge the critical living conditions of the ageing society in the countryside where there is an urgent need for new architectural ideas to create social resonance.

Un gruppo di laureati della nuova London School of Architecture e lo studio di architettura tedesco Lindstedt stanno collaborando per mettere alla prova le critiche condizioni abitative di una società che sta invecchiando nella campagna, dove c’è l’esigenza urgente di nuove idee architettoniche per creare rilevanza sociale.

Together with a dedicated group of local residents from Nettelstedt, a small village in north Germany, we present our vision for a micro-village within the old derelict village core, sited in playful dialogue with its historical context, and pushing for innovative co-living and caring concepts. Our proposal reactivates the village by rethinking the traditional model of the extended family and connecting it with future sharing concepts.

Assieme a un gruppo di residenti impegnati di Nettelstedt, un piccolo villaggio nel nord della Germania, presentiamo la nostra visione per un micro-villaggio all’interno del vecchio e derelitto centro cittadino, instaurando un dialogo giocoso con il contesto storico, e proponendo idee innovative per il co-living e l’assistenza. La nostra proposta riattiva il villaggio ripensando il modello tradizionale della famiglia allargata e connettendolo a concetti futuri di condivisione.

Ein Kollektiv von Absolventen der neu gegründeten London School of Architecture und des deutschen Architekturbüros Lindstedt arbeiten gemeinsam daran, die kritischen Lebensbedingungen der alternden Gesellschaft auf dem Land zu hinterfragen, wo neue architektonische Ideen dringend benötigt werden, um soziale Resonanz zu schaffen.

Zusammen mit einer engagierten Gruppe von Anwohnern aus Nettelstedt, einem kleinen Dorf in Norddeutschland, präsentieren wir unsere Vision für ein Mikrodorf innerhalb des alten verfallenen Dorfkerns, das im spielerischen Dialog mit seinem historischen Kontext steht und gleichzeitig innovative, gemeinschaftliche Wohn- und Pflegekonzepte vorantreibt. Unser Projekt reaktiviert das Dorf, indem es das traditionelle Modell der Großfamilie neu überdenkt und es mit zukünftigen “Sharing”-Konzepten verbindet.

Future Village Issue Why do we need to think about a Future Village?

The title is both literal and metaphorical; it represents an actual 60-unit co-living and intergenerational housing scheme being developed in Nettelstedt, an old German village, and an exploration of how to innovate in light of an aging population and the future of the [urban] rural (the urban nature of the rural).

Perché dobbiamo pensare a un Future Village?

Il titolo è allo stesso tempo letterale e metaforico: rappresenta un progetto per 60 unità tra co-living e residenze inter-generazionali a Nettelstedt, un antico villaggio tedesco, e una ricerca sull’innovazione alla luce di una popolazione che sta invecchiando e del futuro del [urbano] rurale (la natura urbana del rurale).

Warum müssen wir uns Gedanken machen über das „Dorf in der Zukunft“?

Der Titel kann sowohl wörtlich als auch metaphorisch verstanden werden.Das „Zukunftsdorf“ ist ein gemeinschaftliches generationenübergreifendes Wohnprojekt, das derzeit für 60 Wohnparteien im alten Ortskern des ostwestfälischen Dorfes Nettelstedt entwickelt wird. Das Projekt setzt sich mit einer alternden Gesellschaft auseinander und der Zukunft des Dorfes in einer ländlichen Region.

Caring Crisis: An Aging Society A growing number of older citizens in need of care are being left behind under highly regulated, standardised and sterile living conditions, detached from social

interaction and personal free space.

By 2030 over 3.6 million people will need home-care facilities in Germany alone and the current trajectory foresees a shortfall of 200,000 care staff.

Socially and economically, the industry of care-giving is undergoing a tremendous crisis without viable architectural alternatives that allow for more interaction and identification. We only need to look at our past for the simple answer how to care for an aging population: a close community, intergenerational living. The task is now for architecture to provide a contemporary spatial response for these existing, traditional concepts modernity left behind.

Un crescente numero di cittadini anziani che necessitano di assistenza domestica vengono trascurati, in condizioni di vita altamente regolamentate, standardizzate e sterili, distaccati da interazione sociale e spazio personale. Entro il 2030 oltre 3.6 milioni di persone, solo in Germania, avranno bisogno di strutture di assistenza e il trend attuale porterebbe alla mancanza di 200,000 addetti nel settore.

L’industria dell’assistenza domestica sta attraversando una tremenda crisi sociale ed economica, senza alternative architettoniche che permettano piú interazione e identificazione.

Per trovare una semplice risposta a come prenderci cura di una popolazione che sta invecchiando basta guardare al nostro passato: con una comunità vicina e un vivere intergenerazionale. Il compito dell’architettura è ora quello di fornire la risposta spaziale contemporanea a questi concetti tradizionali che la modernità ha dimenticato.

Eine wachsende Anzahl älterer pflegebedürftiger Bürger wird allein gelassen und lebt unter hoch geregelten, standardisierten und sterilen Lebensbedingungen, abgelöst von sozialen Interaktionen und ohne persönlichem Freiraum.

Ab 2030 wird es über 3,6 Millionen Menschen allein in Deutschland geben, die Heimpflege in Anspruch nehmen müssen. Ein Mangel an ca. 200.000 Pflegekräften wird vorhergesagt.

Sozial und ökonomisch geht die Pflegeindustrie durch eine extreme Krise, ohne sinnvolle architektonische Alternativen, die Raum für Interaktion und Identifikation erlauben.

Wir müssen nur auf unsere Vergangenheit schauen, um Antworten darauf zu finden, wie man sich um eine alternde Gesellschaft kümmern kann: durch eine verlässliche Gemeinschaft und ein generationsübergreifendes Wohn- und Lebensmodell. Die Aufgabe ist nun für die Architektur, eine innovative räumliche Lösung zu finden. Die alten Wohnformen wurden in der Nachkriegszeit verdrängt.

Rising Relevance Of The Local In A Globalised World Nettelstedt, a small village in Germany, approached local architects in search of an answer.

Their problem was multi-layered.

To live in the village your choice is very limited, with no real alternatives to either living in a standard ‘single-family home’ or a centralized, highly sanitized & often austere care-homes (when older).

The single-family home only suits the standard nuclear family; local planners see this limited typology of a single-family home as the future relic structure of

the rural landscape. In terms of urban design, the single-family homes also contribute to the deconcentration of village cores through sprawl. The opportunity here is to provide a village that satisfies the needs of nonnuclear family homes, an aging population that wishes to live in a neighbourhood and not a system, and for these spatial arrangements to be mutually beneficial in regenerating and reinvigorating a sense of community.

Nettelstedt, un piccolo villaggio in Germania, si è rivolta agli architetti locali in cerca di una risposta. Il suo problema era su diversi livelli.

Vivere in un villaggio riduce di molto le scelte disponibili, senza una vera alternativa tra abitare in una normale casa unifamiliare o (una volta anziano) in una casa di riposo centralizzata, estremamente sterile e spesso austera.

La casa unifamiliare è adatta solo alla famiglia nucleare standard; i pianificatori locali vedono la limitata tipologia della casa unifamiliare come la rovina futura del paesaggio rurale. In termini di progettazione urbana, la casa unifamiliare contribuisce anche al decentramento dei centri cittadini attraverso lo sprawl. Questa è quindi un’opportunità di creare un villaggio che soddisfi la domanda di case per famiglie non nucleari e le necessità di una popolazione che sta invecchiando che vuole vivere in un quartiere e non in un sistema.

E di farlo sfruttando il contributo di entrambe queste soluzioni spaziali per rigenerare e rinvigorire un senso di comunità.

Die Dorfgemeinschaft von Nettelstedt, einem kleinen Dorf in Deutschland, ist an ein örtliches Architekturbüro herangetreten, auf der Suche nach einer Antwort auf ihre vielschichtigen Probleme. Wenn man in einem Dorf wie Nettelstedt lebt, sind die Wohnmöglichkeiten sehr begrenzt.

Wenn man älter ist, gibt es kaum wirkliche Alternativen zu dem standardisierten Einfamilienhaus auf der einen Seite und dem großen zentralisierten, kontrolliertem und oft auch sehr unpersönlichen Pflegeheim auf der anderen Seite.

Das Einfamilienhaus wurde vor allem für die Kernfamilie konzipiert. Diese Wohnform in der dörflichen Ortsrand-Siedlung wird auf Grund des sich ändernden Bedarfs zu einem großen Leerstand führen. Aus städtebaulicher Sicht haben die EinfamilienhausSiedlungen zur Auflösung des urbanen Lebens in den Dorfzentren geführt. Dies erfüllt nicht mehr die Bedürfnisse der älteren Bevölkerung und auch weiteren Bevölkerungsschichten nach Gemeinschaft und Nachbarschaft.

Ermöglicht wird dies durch Schaffung neuer Wohnformen in den Ortskernen. Hierdurch können die historisch gewachsenen Ortskerne reaktiviert, regeneriert und das Gemeinschaftsbewusstsein gestärkt werden.

Beyond The Single-Family Home The model of a single-family home is not necessarily one that encourages interaction between neighbours, nor does it cater for non-nuclear families. Examples of single parents, elderly couples, friends living together all exist in Nettelstedt, and the existing housing stock is not suitable. There is a brilliant opportunity to provide alternative housing, a mixture of types, that when either composed as smaller buildings or larger communal buildings, that their grain begins work in a dialogue the [urban]rural fabric of the entire village. To borrow Claudia Hildner’s words (reference details, Future Living),“They crucially influence their environment and are like small cities within the city.”, or as we see it - a Village for a Village.

Il modello della casa unifamiliare non incoraggia necessariamente l’interazione tra vicini, nè soddisfa le famiglie non nucleari.

A Nettelstedt esistono esempi di parenti single, coppie anziane e amici che vivono assieme, ma l’offerta abitativa non è adeguata.

C’è l’incredibile opportunità di creare un housing alternativo, un mix di tipologie, che si componga di piccoli edifici o grandi complessi comuni, la cui grana lavori in dialogo con il tessuto [urbano] rurale dell’intero villaggio. Per

citare Claudia Hildner (ref details, Future Living - traduzione degli autori), “essi hanno un’influenza cruciale sul loro ambiente e sono come piccole città all’interno della città”, o come la vediamo noi - un Villaggio per il Villaggio.

Das Modell des Einfamilienhauses steht nicht unbedingt für die Interaktion mit Nachbarn und steht auch nicht für eine Wohnform für Nicht-Kernfamilien. In Nettelstedt leben beispielweise Paare, Alleinstehende, Alleinerziehende und ältere Menschen, für die es keine passende Wohnform gibt. Dies eröffnet eine brillante Gelegenheit, neue Wohnstrukturen bzw.

Wohnformen zu entwickeln. Eine Mischung aus unterschiedlichen Haustypen sowie größeren kommunalen Häusern werden derart kombiniert, dass sie im Dialog mit dem vorhandenen „Weichbild“ des Ortskerns stehen.

Mit den Worten von Claudia Hildner (aus reference details, Future Living“) gesagt, „They crucially influence their environment and are like small cities within the city.”

Oder bezogen auf Nettelstedt “Ein Dorf für das Dorf”.

[Urban] Rural Macro Strategy The project is situated within the northern part of the historic village core, surrounded by a loose grain of mostly derelict “fachwerk” barns.

On the south side of the main street single family house settlements are located along the hill. Our aim is to re-establish a new north-to-south connection by reactivating and opening up Nettelstedt’s stream, creating a new public anchor point.

The regional road spliced the village in two, and the north-side has been left behind in terms of new developments; this is an added opportunity to re-balance the village and vicariously reinstate its centre.

Il sito si trova nella parte settentrionale del centro storico cittadino, circondato da una serie di fienili “fachwerk”, per la maggior parte derelitti. Sul lato meridionale della strada principale, case unifamiliari si dispongono lungo la collina. Il nostro obiettivo è di ristabilire una nuova connessione nord-sud riattivando e riportando in superficie il ruscello di Nettelstedt, creando un nuovo punto di riferimento pubblico. La strada regionale ha diviso il villaggio in due, e la parte settentrionale non è stata interessata da nuove costruzioni; questa è un’opportunità per ribilanciare il villaggio e ristabilire indirettamente il suo centro.

Das Projekt befindet sich im nördlichen Teil des historischen Dorfkerns, umgeben von zum Teil leer stehenden heruntergekommenen Fachwerkhäusern. Auf der Südseite der Hauptstraße (B65) am Hang gelegen, befinden sich vorwiegend Einfamilienhaussiedlungen. Unser Ziel ist es nun, eine Nord-SüdVerbindung zu reaktivieren, die historisch bedingt war. Teilbereiche des Nettelstedter Bachs werden zur Steigerung der Attraktivität wieder offen gelegt und mit einem begleitenden Fußweg durch das historische Zentrum geführt. Die neue Bebauung in Verbindung mit einem öffentlichen Platz schafft eine bessere Balance zwischen den beiden Ortsteilen.

Micro Strategy The proposed ‘micro village’ acts as a catalyst by harnessing the potentials of the physical site along with its rich traditional context.

The architectural compositions respond directly in scale, roofscape and materiality to the traditionalneither emulating it nor ignoring it, but rather a contemporary interpretation. Equally important, it was the space between the buildings that informed much of the design: public activities such as communal gardens, a barn cafe with benches along the newly reopened village stream, and multi-use communal barn area, where an outdoor kitchen and workshop bring the community together both on the daily, but also in times of celebration.

Il ‘micro-villaggio’ proposto agisce come catalizzatore sfruttando il potenziale fisico

del sito insieme al suo contesto fortemente tradizionale. La composizione architettonica risponde direttamente in scala, forma e materialità alla tradizione - non copiandola nè ignorandola, ma dandone piuttosto un’interpretazione contemporanea. Lo spazio tra gli edifici è stato ugualmente importante nell’influenzare il progetto: vi si trovano attività pubbliche come giardini comuni, un fienile-caffè con panchine lungo il nuovo ruscello cittadino, e un’area comune polifunzionale, dove una cucina all’aperto e un’officina fa incontrare la comunità nel quotidiano così come nei giorni di festa.

Das entworfene Microdorf ist ein Katalysator, um die Potentiale des Grundstücks selber so gut wie möglich zu nutzen, aber auch die

Potentiale des gesamten Umfeldes.

Im architektonischen Entwurf reagieren wir direkt auf den Maßstab, auf die Dachlandschaft und auf die Materialität der traditionellen umliegenden Bebauung. Aber wir imitieren, noch ignorieren wir diese Gestaltungsmerkmale, sondern wir interpretieren sie in einer zeitgemäßen Architektursprache.

Ebenso bedeutend ist der Raum zwischen den Gebäuden, der eine wichtige Rolle in unserem Entwurf spielt für öffentliche Aktivitäten, z.B. gemeinschaftlich nutzbare Gärten, ein Scheunencafé und Biergarten mit Bänken entlang des freigelegten Baches, eine vielfältig nutzbare Gemeinschaftsscheune mit Sommerküche und Werkstattbereich zum täglichen Treff und wo man Feste feiern kann.

The proposal consists of five residential typologies supported by amenities both for residents and the surrounding public. The scheme is for single parents, families, co-living, loft apartments, and senior citizens in need of care.

For the residents, a ‘communal barn’ (with a kitchen, work benches, and a few old tables & chairs) provides the perfect space to eat together, repair & create, and celebrate special occasions as neighbours.

The cafe and restaurant that supports the grade-3-level carehome in the north-west corner also provides Nettelstedt with a public beer garden along the trickling stream, bathed in south light and easily accessible to passersby.

Guest house facilities are also available for those visiting friends and family in the care home; a doctor’s practice for residents of Nettelstedt, and a multi-use space that functions independently - for a physiotherapist, hairdresser, or the like.

The space between the buildings comprises of a playground, vegetable gardens with high-beds for accessible gardening, and shared barbecue areas.

Il progetto consiste di cinque tipologie residenziali con servizi sia per i residenti sia per i vicini. È pensato per genitori single, famiglie, co-living, appartamenti nelle mansarde e anziani bisognosi di assistenza.

Per i residenti, un “fienile comune” (con cucina, banchi di lavoro, e qualche vecchio tavolo e sedia) offre lo spazio perfetto per mangiare assieme, riparare e creare, e celebrare occasioni speciali come vicini.

Il caffè e ristorante, che serve la casa di riposo di terzo livello nell’angolo nord-ovest del sito, offre anche un giardino pubblico per Nettelstedt lungo il ruscello, inondato dalla luce del sole e facilmente accessibile per i passanti. Chi visita amici e parenti nella casa di riposo ha a disposizione una pensione; troviamo anche uno studio medico per i residenti di Nettelstedt, e uno spazio polifunzionale indipendente - per un fisioterapista, un parrucchiere, o simili.

Eine Gemeinschaftsscheune für die Bewohner (mit einer Küche, Arbeitsbänken und einigen alten Tischen und Stühlen) bietet den perfekten Ort, um gemeinsam zu essen, zu arbeiten, zu entspannen und besondere Anlässe mit den Nachbarn zu feiern.

Das Café und Restaurant versorgt das Pflegeheim im Quartier mit und stellt Nettelstedt auch noch einen öffentlichen Biergarten entlang des plätschernden Baches zur Verfügung leicht zugänglich für Passanten. Gästehausmöglichkeiten sind auch verfügbar für diejenigen, die von Freunden oder der Familie im Pflegeheim besucht werden, weiter eine Arztpraxis für Bewohner von Nettelstedt und ein vielfältig nutzbarer Bereich-für einen Physiotherapeuten, einen Friseur oder was sonst gebraucht wird.

Der Raum zwischen den Gebäuden wird ebenso vielfältig genutzt; es gibt einen Spielplatz, Gemüsegärten mit leicht zugänglichen Hochbeeten und Gemeinschaftsgrillplätze.

Neighbourhood Living A core aspect of the project is to allow and encourage for a healthy neighbourhood life. A range of spaces allow for communal activities, to meander, to sit and bathe in the sun, to be at home but also be part of what is going on outside. Soft and hard landscaping create spaces of movement and pause, work and play. Projects are done together, knowledge is shared, and the traditional view of self-contained single-family life actively challenged.

Un aspetto fondamentale del progetto è permettere e incoraggiare una sana vita di quartiere. Una serie di spazi

consente di svolgere attività comuni, girovagare, sedere e godersi il sole, essere a casa e allo stesso tempo prendere parte a ciò che succede al di fuori di essa.

Elementi di paesaggio vegetale e minerale creano spazi per spostarsi e sostare, lavorare e giocare. Si fanno progetti insieme, si scambia conoscenza, e l’idea tradizionale della vita all’interno di un singolo nucleo familiare viene attivamente messa in dubbio.

Ein Kernaspekt dieses Projekts ist es, den Menschen ein gesundes und nachbarschaftliches Leben zu ermöglichen und zu fördern.

Eine Vielzahl von gemeinschaftlich

nutzbaren Bereichen laden ein zu gemütlichen Spaziergängen, zum Sonnenbad, zum Gärtnern.

Man ist zu Hause und kann trotzdem am gemeinschaftlichen Leben teilnehmen. Durch den Übergang von weichen zu harten landschaftlichen Bereichen entstehen Bereiche für Bewegung und Ruhe und zum Arbeiten und zum Spielen. Projekte werden gemeinsam angegangen, Wissen wird geteilt und eine aktive Alternative zum traditionellen Bild eines abgeschiedenen Familienlebens wird geschaffen.

Idyllic Living

Imagined scenarios drive many aspects of the design. A porch where the threshold allows the resident to be both at home but also engage with a passing neighbour or someone working in the vegetable garden, address various desires of an idyllic life. A careful balance of private, neighbourly, and [urban] rural life allows an individual to traverse important aspects of a healthy life, physically, socially and psychologically.

Scenari immaginati hanno guidato molti aspetti del progetto. Il portico, dove le soglie permettono ai residenti di essere a casa ma allo stesso tempo entrare in contatto con i vicini che passano o qualcuno che lavora nell’orto, soddisfa vari desideri di una vita idilliaca. Un attento equilibrio tra vita privata, di quartiere e [urbana]rurale permette al singolo individuo di godere di importanti aspetti di una vita sana fisicamente, socialmente e psicologicamente.

Vorgestellte Szenarien treiben viele Aspekte des Entwurfs an.

Eine großzügige Veranda, die es den Bewohnern erlaubt, sowohl privat zu Hause zu sein, als auch schnell mit einem vorbeigehenden Nachbarn oder einem fleißigen Gärtner ins Gespräch zu kommen, erfüllt viele Wünsche an ein idyllisches Leben. Eine behutsame Balance zwischen privatem, nachbarschaftlichem und (urban) ländlichem Leben ermöglicht es in vielerlei Hinsicht, ein gesundes Leben in der Gemeinschaft zu führen.

Intergenerational Living As a multigenerational living project we want to actively help young families in the everyday through the sharing of costs, space and time. As a rule throughout the design of the ground floor levels, accessible living is the standard.

The row houses are future-proofed and flexible in that they can be adapted into family homes, shared home or two apartments.

Essendo questo un progetto per residenze multi-generazionali, vogliamo attivamente aiutare nel quotidiano le giovani famiglie attraverso la condivisione di costi, spazio e tempo. Come regola generale, lo standard per il progetto dei piani terra è un vivere accessibile. Le case a schiera sono adattabili e flessibili in quanto possono essere trasformate in case unifamiliari, case condivise o in due appartamenti.

Als ein generationsübergreifendes Wohnprojekt wollen wir durch das Teilen von Kosten, Raum und Zeit jungen Familien aktiv helfen den Alltag zu erleichtern.

Im gesamten Entwurf wollen wir alle Erdgeschossebenen behindertengerecht gestalten. Je nach Zukunftsszenarium können die Reihenhäuser entweder als großzügiges Familienhaus oder auch als zwei getrennte kleine Wohneinheiten genutzt werden.

Independent Living An integrated caring-concept at each stage of one’s life helps with maintaining independence as one gets older. This is achieved through helping each other in the everyday or through professional help available at various levels.

Strategically, the care home is placed at the heart of the project.

Communal and public activity embraces the care units, allowing the older generation to effortlessly take part in a vibrant and diverse every day.

Un concetto di assistenza integrata a ogni stadio della vita aiuta una persona a mantenere l’indipendenza quando invecchia.

Questo si ottiene aiutandosi a vicenda nel quotidiano o ricorrendo all’aiuto di professionisti disponibili a diversi livelli. La casa di riposo è strategicamente posizionata al centro del progetto.

Attività comuni e pubbliche circondano le unità, permettendo agli anziani di prendere parte senza fatica a una quotidianità vivace e varia.

Ein integriertes Pflegekonzept in allen Lebensphasen ermöglicht die eigene Selbstständigkeit im Alter, ob durch gegenseitige Nachbarschaftshilfe oder durch professionelle Hilfe, da wo sie wirklich gewünscht wird. Die Pflegewohngruppe der Diakonie befindet sich im Herz des Projektes.

Diese zentrale Lage ermöglicht es den älteren Bewohnern weiterhin am lebendigen Dorfleben teilzunehmen.

Village Living for a Living Village Nettelstedt Regatta! Reviving the character of the village core is achieved by allowing spaces for both old and new traditions to take place. The barn cafe, communal gardens, multi-use space, and opened-up stream, bring residents and fellow Nettlestedt’ers together.

In the backdrop one sees the contemporary interpretation of the vernacular barn; maintaining memory yet mixed with the excitement of something new.

Nettelstedt Regatta! La rivitalizzazione del carattere del centro cittadino è ottenuta creando spazi sia per le vecchie che per le nuove tradizioni. Il fienile-caffè, giardini comuni, spazi polifunzionali, e il ruscello riscoperto riuniscono i residenti e gli abitanti di Nettelstedt. Fa da sfondo l’interpretazione contemporanea del tipico fienile; si conserva la memoria unendola allo stesso tempo all’eccitazione di qualcosa di nuovo.

Nettelstedt-Regatta! Um den ursprünglichen Charakter des Dorfkerns wieder zu beleben, wollen wir Raum für alte aber auch für neue Traditionen schaffen. Ein Scheunencafé, gemeinschaftliche Gärten, vielseitig nutzbare Räume und der reaktivierte Bachlauf bringen die Bewohner Nettelstedts zusammen. Das Scheunencafé ist eine neue Interpretation des alten Fachwerkhauses, das über Jahrzehnte an dieser Stelle stand.

Stille Strasse Elevation A mixture of scales resembles the typified streetscape experience of Nettelstedt. Playing with the varied roof pitches, with heavier bases and lighter top structures, not copying but rather mixing in with the vernacular. The ‘gate house’, the largest of the structures, holds a presence to the North, looking out over the fields beyond. The barn cafe, sited on the north west corner, is the ‘living room’ of the project, that also opens up to the public. The barn cafe stands exactly where a Fachwerk barn once stood, now reborn as a contemporary structure, its facade picking up on the traditional building style.

varietà di tetti a spiovente, con basi pesanti e sovrastrutture leggere, non copiando ma piuttosto confondendosi con il vernacolare.

La “portineria”, la più grande delle strutture, è situata a nord e guarda verso la campagna. Il fienile-caffè, situato nell’angolo nord-ovest, è il “salotto” del progetto aperto anche al pubblico. Il fienile-caffè si trova esattamente dove una volta sorgeva un fienile Fachwerk, ora rinato come edificio nuovo con una facciata che richiama lo stile costruttivo tradizionale.

Eine Variation von unterschiedlichen Maßstäben spiegelt eine typische Straßenansicht im alten Nettelstedt wider. Das Spiel mit unterschiedlichen Dachneigungen

mit einer schweren Basis und leichteren Wandstrukturen ermöglicht den Dialog mit dem Kontext.

Das Torhaus, das höchste Gebäude dieses Projektes bildet einen klaren Eingang im Norden mit dem Blick auf die dahinter liegenden Felder und Wiesen. Das Scheunencafé im Nordwesten ist das Wohnzimmer für das gesamte Projekt und läd die Öffentlichkeit ein. Das Scheunencafé steht genau an der gleichen Position wie das alte Fachwerkhaus und ist nun in einer zeitgemäßen Holz-Rahmen-Bauweise entworfen worden. Die Fassadenstruktur spielt dabei mit dem traditionellen Baustil.

The most central part space of the scheme is the centre of the project, much like the centre point of the Vitruvian man. A place where food is grown, cooked, shared; where kids play, the elderly sit in the sun a true social condenser. It is easily accessible by all residents, positioned as the middle-ground between public & private, high & low, fast & slow.

Lo spazio centrale del sito è la “pancia” del progetto, proprio come il centro dell’uomo vitruviano. Un posto dove il cibo viene coltivato, cucinato e condiviso; dove i bambini giocano, gli anziani siedono al sole, e gli uccelli e le api li vanno a trovare. Il sole riscalda la pancia, facilmente accessibile da tutti i residenti, posta su un piano intermedio tra il pubblico e il privato, tra l’alto e il basso, tra il veloce e il lento.

The Bach strasse is named after the stream that runs from the hills in the south. Currently beneath the street, the proposed opening up and integration of the stream into the scheme accompanies the dynamic West Elevation. The gentle gradient used as a design opportunity to create seated retaining walls, divisions between driveway and pathway, gardening and private porch, allowing accessible ramps to traverse and guide all visitors gently between levels.

Bachstrasse prende il nome dal ruscello che scende dalle colline verso sud. L’apertura e integrazione nel progetto del ruscello, attualmente al di sotto della strada, accompagna il dinamico prospetto ovest. La leggera pendenza è usata come opportunità progettuale per creare sedute con i muri di contenimento, divisioni tra la strada e il marciapiede, giardini e portici privati, rampe accessibili per guidare gentilmente tutti i visitatori attraverso i livelli.

Die Bachstraße ist nach dem Bach benannt, der im Wiehengebirge entspringt und derzeit unterhalb der Straße kanalisiert ist. Der Entwurf sieht vor, den Bach wieder zu öffnen und ihn zu reaktivieren. Er verläuft entlang der dynamischen Westansicht. Die leichte Steigung im Gelände wird im Entwurf genutzt, um Stützmauern mit Sitzgelegenheiten zu verbinden und sensible Übergänge zwischen privaten und öffentlichen Räumen zu erstellen und den Besucher entlang sanfter Rampen durch das Projekt zu leiten.

The row houses’ sculptural form is a modern interpretation of the large sloped roofs found throughout Nettelstedt and surrounding villages. Set away from the neighbouring building to the east, the rhythm of the row houses form a varied grain to the larger orthogonal buildings, its form playing with setbacks, catching the light in a manner that exaggerates its rhythm. Collectively they hold the south end of the site, watching over its two vehicular entrances.

La forma scultorea delle case a schiera è una moderna interpretazione degli ampi tetti a spiovente che si trovano in tutta Nettelstedt e nei villaggi vicini.

Staccate dall’edificio adiacente a est, la serie di case a schiera forma un tessuto diverso da i più grandi edifici ortogonali, con forme che arretrano e catturano la luce in modo da esagerarne il ritmo. Il loro insieme occupa l’estremità meridionale del sito, puntando lo sguardo sui suoi due ingressi stradali.

Die skulpturale Form der Reihenhäuser wurde aus den Dachneigungen der umliegenden Häuser entwickelt. Der variierende Rhythmus der Reihenhäuser setzt sich von den größeren orthogonalen Häusern ab. Homo[Sapien] A situation in which “two unpaid interns can sit in two different offices in one street working at the same problem, that probably was already solved hundreds of times by other unpaid interns in other offices before” is sadly not uncommon. 1 The current condition encourages practices to compete rather than to share. Traditional practice models are dated, slow and operating in a silo. If we wish to bring about fundamental changes to the way we live, we need to fundamentally change the way we work.

In una situazione in cui “due stagisti non pagati possono, in due uffici diversi sulla stessa via, lavorare allo stesso problema, che probabilmente è stato già risolto altre centinaia di volte da altri stagisti in altri uffici” è tristemente frequente.1 La condizione contemporanea spinge gli studi a competere anzichè condividere. I tradizionali modelli operativi sono datati, lenti e isolati. Se vogliamo davvero operare cambiamenti radicali al modo in cui viviamo, dobbiamo cambiare radicalmente il modo in cui lavoriamo.

A new generation of architects from London are responding to this traditional approach. Architecture 00, Assemble, alma-nac, IF_DO, Red Deer, Interrobang, Liddicoat & Goldhill, Skene Catling de la Peña, Marko & Placemakers are some who demonstrate a variety of strategies being tested, operating as mass collaborators, self-developers, civic entrepreneurs, digital fabricators or hyper-specialists. They go further and question the expertise of the profession, the authorship of design or forming inter-dependent collectives to bridge the gap between the public and the process. This is the future of practice.

Una nuova generazione di architetti da Londra sta rispondendo a questo approccio tradizionale alla professione. Architecture 00, Assemble, alma-nac, IF_DO, Red Deer, Interrobang, Liddicoat & Goldhill, Skene Catling de la Peña, Marko & Placemakers sono alcuni esempi di diverse strategie messe alla prova, operando come collaboratori di massa, imprenditori edili, imprenditori civici, inventori digitali o iper-specialisti.

Questi studi vanno oltre e mettono in dubbio la conoscenza specifica della professione e l’autorialità del progetto, formando collettivi interdipendenti per colmare il divario tra pubblico e processo. Questo è il futuro della professione.

Wenn wir als Architekten die Wohn- und Lebensrealitäten um uns herum ändern wollen, dann müssen wir damit beginnen unsere Arbeitsweise tiefgreifend zu ändern.

Eine neue Generation von Architekten beginnt diese Zukunft bereits heute in London einzuläuten. Junge Büros wie Architecture 00, Assemble, almanac, IF_DO, Red Deer, Interrobang, Liddicoat & Goldhill, Skene Catling de la Peña, Marko & Placemakers, operieren in großen kollaborativen Netzwerken, als eigenständige Projektentwickler, gemeinschaftliche Entrepreneure, extreme Spezialisten oder als digitale Fabrikanten. Sie überschreiten die Grenzen und die Expertise unserer Profession und das traditionelle Verständnis der Autorenschaft. Sie bilden vielschichtige Kollaborationen, um ihre Arbeit nicht nur vom Schreibtisch, sondern aus der Mitte der Gesellschaft heraus zu gestalten. Das ist die Zukunft unserer Arbeitswelt.

We Make Homo[Faber] As architects we like to make things.

We also like to think we know how to make things. When we were working in ‘Makerspaces’ in east London amongst experts in making- from various fields (robotics, carpentry, proto-typing, etc) we witnessed the benefits first-hand of sharing each other’s knowledge, skills and resources to uncover innovative and relevant design solutions. Even they, who are already highly skilled as individuals, operate as a single network; their ‘entanglement’ brings them much further as a collective than where they would be as individual entities.

There is a lesson in this for architects.

We wish to emulate this in practice, and create ‘spaces’ that enable this kind of collaboration and blur the lines between clients, users, makers and architects. With this said, it may sound simple in theory, but it requires patience and passion in practice. During the process of the project there has to be a clear drive to better understand and master human irrationality, the subjectivity of problems and the contingency of processes. This is the skill of the future architect: to make collaboratively.

Come architetti ci piace fare cose.

Ci piace anche pensare di sapere come si costruiscono le cose. Quando lavoravamo nei ‘Makerspaces’ di Londra Est in mezzo a esperti del fare - provenienti da campi diversi (robotica, carpenteria, prototipazione, etc) abbiamo visto con i nostri occhi i benefici di condividere le proprie conoscenze, capacità e risorse per scoprire soluzioni progettuali innovative e rilevanti. Persino loro, che sono già altamente qualificati, operano come un singolo network; il loro ‘coinvolgimento’ li porta molto più lontano come collettivo di dove potrebbero arrivare come entità singole.

C’è una lezione in questo per gli architetti. Vogliamo emulare questo esempio nella pratica, e creare “spazi” che permettano questo tipo di collaborazione e che confondano i confini tra clienti, utenti, maestranze e architetti. Ciò può sembrare semplice in teoria, ma richiede in realtà pazienza e passione. Durante il processo di un progetto ci deve essere una guida chiara per capire meglio e controllare l’irrazionalità umana, la soggettività dei problemi e la casualità dei processi. Questa è la dote dell’architetto del futuro: fare collaborando.

Als Architekten lieben wir es Dinge herzustellen und vor allem zu wissen, wie man sie herstellen kann. In der Zeit, in der wir in den Makerspaces des Londoner “East Ends” mit einer Vielzahl von Experten in Sachen Robotik, Holz und Prototypen Fabrikation arbeiten durften, konnten wir aus erster Hand erfahren was es heißt, sein Wissen, Know-How und Ressourcen mit anderen zu teilen, um innovative Lösungsansätze zu finden. Auch eigenständige und erfahrene Individuen arbeiten in einem gemeinsamen Netzwerk. Ihre gegenseitige Zusammenarbeit in großen Kollektiven ermöglicht Ihnen komplett neue Wege zu gehen, als zuvor.

Als Architekten können wir viel davon lernen: Wir möchten Räume schaffen, um diese Art der Zusammenarbeit zu förden und die starren Grenzen zwischen Klient, Planer, Handwerker und Architekt aufzubrechen. In der Theorie klingt dies oft sehr simpel, aber es erfordert in der Praxis viel Geduld und Leidenschaft. Daher ist es für uns im Zuge dieses Projekst relevant, ein besseres Verständnis unserer eigenen Verhaltensmuster, sowie der verschiedenen Blickwinkel unserer Mitmenschen zu erlangen. In der Lage zu sein in komplexen Netzwerken neue Dinge zu erschaffen ist die entscheidende Fähigkeit für zukünftige Architekten.

We Play Homo[Ludens] A game, as Bernard Suits poignantly describes it, is “the voluntary attempt to overcome unnecessary obstacles”2.

One of the methods with which to bring people into the process is to play the “game of architecture”. The key is to play without having the desire to control the moves of other players involved, but rather to enjoy, observe, absorb and interpret.

As this may only make up a small margin of the time on the project, it is important we use this unpredictable context as an opportunity to create unexpected and innovative solutions with and for our clients & futureusers. The richness of the game is determined by the rules and tools with which you play. Consultants, regulations and materials are some of the elements to bring into the game for ideas and discussions to bounce between. At the end of the day, there is no player that wins the game, but rather the process itself.

Un gioco, come descrive acutamente Bernard Suits, è “il volontario tentativo di superare ostacoli superflui”2. Uno dei metodi per coinvolgere le persone nel processo progettuale è quello di giocare il “gioco dell’architettura”.

La chiave è giocare senza il desiderio di controllare le mosse degli altri giocatori, ma piuttosto di divertirsi, osservare, assorbire e interpretare.

Nonostante questo sia solo un piccolo spazio nella durata di un progetto, è importante usare questo contesto imprevedibile come opportunità per creare soluzioni inaspettate e innovative con e per i nostri clienti e futuri utenti. La ricchezza del gioco è determinata dalle regole e dagli strumenti con cui si gioca. Consulenti, regolamenti e materiali sono alcuni degli elementi da mettere sul tavolo per far nascere idee e discussioni. Alla fine dei conti, non c’è un giocatore che vince, ma il processo in sé.

Ein Spiel, so wie es Bernard Suits in so treffender Weise formuliert hat, “ist der freiwillige Versuch unnötige Hindernisse zu überwinden”2.

Ein Weg, Menschen in diese neuen kollaborativen Netzwerke zu integrieren ist, Ihnen Architektur als Spiel zugänglich zu machen. Dabei geht es in erster Linie nicht darum, die Züge der anderen Spieler vorherzusehen und zu kontrollieren, sondern darum sie aufmerksam zu beobachten, ihr Verhalten aufzunehmen, zu interpretieren und nicht zuletzt das Spiel zu genießen.

Im alltäglichen Arbeitsleben haben wir oft nur sehr wenig Zeit, uns mit unseren Mitspielern intensiv auseinanderzusetzen, daher müssen wir in der Lage sein, auch diese kurzen Momente zu nutzen. um mit und für unsere Klienten und zukünftigen Nutzern innovative und unerwartete Lösungen zu kreieren. Die Qualität und Dynamik des Spiels hängt von den Regeln und den Werkzeugen ab, die uns dabei zur Verfügung stehen.

Verschiedene Berater, Parameter und Materialien fordern und ermöglichen immer wieder neue Spielzüge. Am Ende des Tages geht es nicht darum, wer gewonnen hat, sondern wie wir gemeinsam das Spiel gestaltet haben.

We bring academia and practice closer together to enrich both. Work-based learning is designed to engender in students a greater understanding of their own power as practitioners, while the school provides practices with the space to explore ideas in a rigorous and speculative way.

We place an emphasis on collaborative working among practices and students, with both encouraged to establish links between architecture and adjacent disciplines and industries, and to explore the spatial consequences of the rapid expansion of knowledge in other fields.

Facciamo incontrare il mondo accademico e quello professionale per arricchire entrambi. L’apprendimento basato sul lavoro è pensato per generare negli studenti una maggiore consapevolezza del proprio potenziale come professionisti, mentre la scuola fornisce agli studi lo spazio per esplorare idee in modo rigoroso e speculativo.

City as Campus The LSA uses the city as its campus, in order both to provide real-world learning and to reduce overheads – savings that are passed on to students in the form of lower fees. In the First Year, students are primarily based with their practices, while in the Second Year students are based at the LSA studio.

The LSA’s spatial provision now includes a permanent hub at Somerset House, where the core faculty and Second Years are based. Our Second Years are also all members of the professional workshop Makerversity, which is handily in the basement of Somerset House. Most of our taught programme is hosted by Spatial Partners in our Practice Network.

Each cohort tackles a different London borough for its two years on the programme. Engaging with the locality allows greater opportunities for shared urban analysis, deeper engagement with the architectural and urban issues, and the opportunity to test design experiments against real constraints and user groups.

Small yet connected

We are a small school: we currently have 67 students split across the two cohorts, and the 2018/19 intake is capped at 40. As a social as well as a creative enterprise, the LSA is a family – not a factory ­– and we’d like all our students to know each other personally.

However, many times larger than the small student intake, we benefit from a wealth of professional collaborators: our Practice Network contains some 100 London-based firms, who also bring in their associated networks, from consultants and clients to engineers and artists.

Protopractice year We view the Second Year as the first year of a career: that’s why we call it the Proto-Practice Year. We don’t operate a unit system: tutors are drawn from the Practice Network and teach more in the model of thesis supervision with an emphasis on students establishing their own community of practice and design methodologies. The school asks you who you want to be as a designer, and seeks to support you to test this position and to establish a clear trajectory for your subsequent design agenda and identity.

Consideriamo il secondo anno di studi come il primo di carriera professionale: è per questo che lo chiamiamo Proto-Practice Year.

Non usiamo il sistema delle unit: i tutor vengono dal Practice Network e fungono da supervisori della tesi, spingendo gli studenti a stabilire i propri riferimenti e metodologia progettuale.
