WEED CONTROL IN THE LOCKYER VALLEY
I notice in recent editions of your paper that our Council says we should dig
on our property and take it to the Gatton Dump. For me, that is a 60-kilometre round trip... not happening!
During a recent, amicable phone conversation with Councillor Hagan, he informed me that I should put the weed in a sealed plastic bag and ensure it

In their wisdom, the Council made the decision to close the local Ropeley Transfer station and take away our convenient industrial bins. I see they’re at it again in other parts of the Valley. If they had put in proper controls at each site, there would not have been unlawful or indiscrim-

Now more than ever, these bins would be so useful in carefully disposing of the noxious

As quickly as I’m trying
to eradicate the plant on my property, and on the adjacent roadside, another plant seems to be growing in my wake. It’s just so

I am aware that the Council has a small, dedicated team of staff in their environmental and weed management program.

‘grave concerns’ over Inland Rail
LOCKYER Valley Regional Council (LVRC) has expressed ‘grave concerns’ over the future of the community as the Inland Rail project moves towards its delivery phase.
LVRC councillors are calling on the State and Commonwealth Governments to ‘ensure the nation’s salad bowl doesn’t pay the price for the project’s convenience’.
Mayor Tanya Milligan said the region’s substantiated concerns appear to be falling on deaf ears.
“It doesn’t matter what part of the process you look at; the proposed route will have serious generational impacts on our townships,” she said.
“Despite repeated requests, the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) has been unable or unwilling to provide Council with key information such as costs of the planned infrastructure and the the assessment process used by ARTC to compare options
ling and safety assessments.”
“We understand this is vital transport infrastructure and we aren’t saying ‘not in my backyard’, but we are saying it must be moved outside of our townships.”
In the December 2021 response to the Rural Transport References Senate Committee report on The Management of the Inland
Rail project, the Australian Government rejected a recommendation for an independent review and update of the 2015 business case.
“The Australian Government has taken into careful
the many studies undertaken in 2006, 2010, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2020 to ensure that the route selected can meet business needs,” the document said.
“The Australian Government does not accept that further review of the route or business case for Inland Rail is needed or would be an appropriate use of taxpayer dollars.”
LVRC Deputy Mayor Jason Cook said council had been demanding explanations on behalf of the community, “We understand it might cost a little more to move the route outside of the Gatton
Four charged in Gatton over illegal tobacco sales
GATTON Police Station’s Criminal Investigation Branch executed a search warrant at Railway Street store Bari Mart on Thursday September 29 where they seized various illegal cigarette products and 936 grams of tobacco.
Gatton Police Station Constable Kimberley Allen said six adults were charged under the operation in a short time of 17 minutes.
“These goods are imported illegally and it’s taking it away from the legitimate
businesses… that do pay Australian taxes,” Const Allen said.

township, but when picturing two kilometre long, double-stacked freight trains roaring through the centre of a busy town more than 40 times per day, realigning the route just seems like a no brainer,” Cr Cook said.
“Beyond that, reduced connectivity between the two sides of the rail line is likely to create a ‘wrong side of the tracks’ social issue as well as genuine health concerns from the noise impacts.
Rail project is tipped to disrupt the ability to sleep for hundreds of residents living within a kilometre of the rail corridor.”
Cr Milligan called on the
Australian and Queensland Governments to come to the region to listen to council’s concerns.
“While we are a small piece in a large national scale puzzle – that shouldn’t discredit our concerns and we deserve both a voice and a platform to be heard,” Cr Milligan said.

Go pink, get checked
BY JACOB HAYDEN
TO SHOW support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and encourage people to get checked, local councillors dyed their hair pink.
SRC Councillor Sean Choat said he did not know of a family that has not been touched by breast cancer.
His niece was diagnosed with a lethal form of the cancer at 29.
“That was just so devastating for her… fortunately she fought and she beat it,” Cr Choat said.
Cr Choat said LVRC Mayor Tanya Milligan was an impressive lady and a ‘beacon for what can be done’ as a survivor of breast cancer.
“How wonderful is it that she is still there for the cause, good on her and Councillor Holstein for dying her hair too,” he said.
Lockyer Valley Regional Council Mayor Tanya Milligan was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006 and again in 2015.
Every October she dresses in pink but this year she decided to ‘take it up a notch’.
“The pink hair’s been really great because it’s a talking point,” she said.
“And also a reminder that women but men as well.”

Have your say: economic development strategy
SOMERSET Regional Council has developed a draft Economic Development Strategy to help guide investment attraction and support economic evolution across the region.
Somerset Regional Council Mayor Graeme Lehmann said council engaged Lucid Economics to develop the draft strategy with some clear objectives in mind.
“The economic development strategy has been designed to facilitate and drive sustainable growth and prosperity in Somerset,” Cr Lehmann said.
“The strategy outlines how council will act as a catalyst to facilitate the next major transition of the economy in Somerset over the next decade or two.”
Cr Lehmann said the draft Economic Development Strategy was a
culmination of plenty of research and high-level engagement.
“The project started in early 2022 and included a detailed economic and industry analysis, stakeholder engagement and workshops with key industry groups and representatives,” Cr Lehmann said.
“Now it’s time for our community to review the draft and have their say on some of the key components and objectives outlined in the draft strategy.”
The draft strategy also highlighted some barriers that will need to be tackeled, including improving telecommunications, available childcare, and available land for developments.

Today’s the day the teddy bears have their picnic
IF YOU WENT down to the Somerset Civic Centre on Thursday, you were in for a big surprise.
It was Somerset Regional Council’s annual Teddy Bears Picnic celebration.
Somerset Regional Council Mayor Graeme Lehmann said
the event was about connecting services with parents and caregivers in rural areas.
“This event is such a huge success because it brings together, parents, grandparents, caregivers and children in a fun and engaging atmosphere,” Cr Lehmann said.
“This annual event is fantastic for families to get together, get involved in their what services and activities are available for children in Somerset.”

Timber products like chairs, tables and the like will no longer be accepted at LVRC waste facilities.
Waste facilities no longer accepting timber products
DUE TO Queensland Government changes around the acceptance of timber waste at processors, Lockyer Valley Regional Council will no longer accept timber products for resource recovery at our waste facilities.
With timber currently in short supply and to avoid this valuable material
residents are urged to consider other options.
A Lockyer Valley Region-
al Council spokesperson said quality saleable items can still be donated to the Gatton Tip Shop for another life.
“Alternatively, residents could opt to turn their trash into treasure by selling it via the second-hand market,” they said.

Truckies remembered
MORE THAN 700 trucks converged on Gatton for Lights on the Hill on October 1 and 2.
The annual event honours men and women in the trucking and transport industry who have lost their lives.
The convoy came from Brisbane and Toowoomba on Saturday morning to Gatton Showgrounds, where the trucks packed into the arena and surrounding grounds.
Live music throughout the day entertained the truckies, their families, and the public while they caught up with old mates.
On Sunday morning a service was held at the Lights on the Hill memorial at Lake Apex.
58 names were added to the memorial’s walls this year, a lasting dedication to those who contributed to keeping Australia moving.

LOCKYER Woodcrafters Group held their open day in Forest Hill on Saturday October 1.
Secretary Karen Jackson said the annual event is a chance for the wider community to get inside the shed and see the many projects and talents of the members.
“Each year we have an open day to show the community what we do here,” she said.
“We have our items that we’ve made to sell and we do demonstrations on the machinery.”
The group demonstrated techniques for pyrography, intarsia, turning, scroll sawing, and making bandsaw boxes, and guests enjoyed the sausage sizzle and morning tea.
Mrs Jackson said visitors on the day were ‘amazed’ with what goes on inside the shed.
“We want to encourage people if they want to do something in their spare time
to come and try,” she said.
The open day is held in October to coincide with the club’s birthday.
Their premises at the recreation reserve is now ten years old.

people’s ability to cope with them.

The Most Worshipful Grand Master of the United Grand Lodge of Queensland
ceremony with 18 senior ofin Brisbane.
Mr Harper commended the 250 current and past members of Lodge Argyle on their contributions to community.
“The work that they’ve done, not only for the Masons… but also what they’ve done for the community is just outstanding,” he said.
“I congratulate the lodge on this special occasion and I look forward to the next hundred years.”
The Masonic Lodge at Forest Hill was established on July 30, 1906.
Land on Victoria Street was purchased in 1913 and the building was constructed to the tune of 465 pounds.
It was consecrated on September 30, 1922.
The consecration ceremony, recreated in 2022 exactly as it was done in 1922, draws from the Biblical tale of Solomon, who built the
Lodge Argle Worshipful Master Michael Crellin said it was an ‘honour’ to be
Master of the Lodge for this milestone.
“For me, it’s a great honour to have the privilege of being the Master of the Lodge at any time, but when you get to celebrate a milestone event like this, it’s a privilege and deep honour,” he said.
Mr Crellin said the lodge
raises money for various charities and causes, including Domestic Violence Action Centre, Blue Care, and the local hospital.
“In the last ten years we’ve give more than $55,000 to local charities,” he said.
The celebrations continued with a banquet that evening.

BY LESLEY WHITTEKER
IT WAS when my husband was surprised by the snake under his pillow that we wondered if our move to Somerset country had been such a great idea.
Temporarily living in two converted shipping containers while we built our house, his bedroom was snug, and he liked to leave his door open for air.
It was cold, and the snake thought it was snug too and had curled up contentedly.
Lawrence awoke at 2am, aware something wasn’t right. He groped under his pillow, thinking, ‘that’s odd. What have I put under there that feels cool?’
The cool thing began to move.
Lawrence leapt from bed.
Feverishly, he checked IDs in our wildlife handbook.
Luckily it was a Child’s Python – relatively harmless. Heart palpitating, he carefully removed the wriggling reptile. Opening a beer came next, remembering the local joke: what should you do when bitten by a snake? Answer: have a beer. It may be your last.
Next job was to put on a screen door!
It wasn’t the last snake we saw.
A couple of more dangerous ‘brownies’ snuck into the
One was removed by our friendly, local Viking snake wrangler (truly, it was his religion – he expected to go to Valhalla after a snake bite. One of many interesting characters we met.)
But it didn’t change our
minds about the joys of sustainable bush living.
When we bought the bare, 55-acre property in 2006, we knew there was a journey ahead. As we stared from the hill house-pad down to the yellowed, drought-affected country, we could not imagine we would soon see a transformed landscape with est of grass, when heavy rains
My past as an ABC broadcaster and manager seemed as far away as the tree-covered hills that loom like a fortress over our valley.
Every view from the windows that make up the entire front wall showed a
mist or clouds.
Having studied the weather for a year or two, our goal was to build a unique house of concrete, metal and glass which would nestle into the hill and almost disappear:
Before we could begin, we needed to dig trenches for wiring and plumbing, get electricity connected, and install a septic tank.
The tilt-up panels were poured on site, and erected with a crane and the help of a up, then the house.
It sounds simple but took ten years of hard work.
We call it the ‘Hand of Cards’ house. Imagine a that’s the shape. Neighbours dubbed it ‘the Eskdale Opera House’!
ago, Lawrence and I shared a this, where we could grow our own food and put down roots. Most neighbours make,
hunt or grow something to eat and share .
One day, Lawrence planted half an acre of pumpkins and mustard seed. Great! We thought.
But a few nights later, he heard a noise and went out with a torch. As he shone it,
happily! The sound of jaws steadily chomping…a herd of deer!
They thought it was a delightful treat.
We got crafty: we built enclosed gardens, which
But, growing older, caring for a place this size is becoming challenging.
Sadly, we will soon need to move somewhere smaller. But I will never regret making the move to Somerset.
It has been a life-changing adventure .

Little family’s big impact on Toogoolawah
BY JACOB HAYDEN
PETER Little and his family have been immortalised at the Toogoolawah Showground with the renaming of the campdraft grounds: The Little Family Campdraft Arena.
Peter’s parents, Len and
Ruby Little, had a long history of service to the Toogoolawah Show Society.
Len was president for 30 years while Ruby used to do all of the canteen work for campdrafts, show balls, and other events.
Peter was chief steward of prime cattle for 20 years be-
fore he passed away in 2021.
Wife Helen Little said the family had always been very active with the Show Society, and Peter loved working with the cattle.
“We just loved it, because cattle was our life,” Mrs Little said.
Mrs Little said she never
expected the Show Society to honour the family with the renaming.
“It meant a lot, Peter’s only been gone for 12 months,” she said.
“It was just so special for the family to be remembered in that way.
“We never expected any-
thing like that, it was a very big surprise.”
Current president Vern Doyle thanked the Little family for all of their hard work over half a century.
“Peter and Helen looked at how to change the campdraft to make it a better draft, they redesigned yards and made
things a lot safer for people to use,” Mr Doyle said.
“They donated a lot of cattle and supported the show really well.
“After Peter passed away 12 months ago we thought we needed to do something.”
The renaming was made

The arena renaming was unveiled at the Peter Little Memorial Restricted Open draft on September 17.

Cattle camp trains up next gen
BY GRACE CRICHTON
THE NEXT generation got hands on experience at Toogoolawah Junior Cattle Camp last week.
For four days from Thursday September 29 to Sunday, 77 young people participated in the hands-on camp, learning everything from judging and parading to animal health.
Toogoolawah Show Society president Vern Doyle said the camp taught young people aged eight to 25 the basics of cattle care and showing.
“There’s country kids, city kids, you get a wide range of people,” Mr Doyle said.
“Some are regulars and come every year.
“The reasons they come is they like the diversity.”
While some cattle camps to leading and showing, the
Toogoolawah camp covers a range of relevant topics.
The group had talks on foot and mouth disease, from to tell good hay from bad, and learned pavilion judging skills.
Veterinarian and reigning Queensland Country Life Showgirl Sarah Rose shared
her professional expertise on Friday and returned to help as a group leader on the weekend.
Ms Rose spoke to the campers about bull breeding soundness.
“They were very attentive and asked lots of questions,” she said.
Saturday was a full day of
junior judging and Sunday was junior paraders followed by presentations.
Mr Doyle said the skills learnt at camp can help young people with employment prospects.
“It gives them skills to go help other studs,” he said.
some of them will go on to
properties out west and then the territory.”
The camp was run but the show society’s junior committee, who, with guidance from the executive committee, gain valuable experience.
“The idea is to give them experience in organising events,” Mr Doyle said.
“They’ve got to organise
all the cattle, they’ve got to organise what kids can go with what cattle, and that’s a big job.”
Ms Rose said the junior committee showed great initiative.
“Having those younger generations coming through is what’s going to keep it going into the future,” she said.
Toogoolawah Junior Cattle Camp attracted 77 participants to learn the ins and outs and cattle showing over four days.

Leanne Tinney of LJ Hooker Esk showcases ability to consistently perform
Leanne Tinney, Agent of LJ Hooker Esk, has showcased her ability to perform consistently as a salesperson, producing successful campaigns for multiple Blackbutt and Tarameo Region properties. When Leanne approached the sale of 23 Blackbutt Street, Blackbutt she knew it would be important to focus on the benefit of having vacant council land next door and a rural property behind. The property was well received by the market and sold quickly. She reinforced her ability to negotiate by facilitating the sale of 43 Fern Street, Blackbutt, a double block backing onto an avocado farm. She didn’t stop there, and proceeded to sell 48 George Street, Blackbutt, a large corner block with rural property across the road. 4 Coulson street,
Blackbutt was next in line. Leanne highlighted the value in the large block and rail trail along the back fence to produce another successful campaign. Leanne then focused her attention on 97 David Road, Taromeo, a 5 acre block with great possibilities. She didn’t stop there, selling 79 Crumpton Drive, Blackbutt, a 10 acre block with shedding, resetting the market in that area. Leanne is incredibly passionate about the area and describes it as “beautiful country”. According to Leanne, the strongest enquiry comes from grey nomads seeking a peaceful place to settle, with a generous landholding and retirees wishing a quiet, tranquil hideaway off the beaten path. The Brisbane Valley Rail Trail is a great attraction to the area, and several of
the eventual buyers of these properties first discovered them while on the trail. Leanne says there has been no shortage of buyers, with the negotiations typically coming to a head within 5-21 days of the campaign launching. Her clients applaud her and say she is the Agent of choice in the area. According to them, Leanne understands and appreciates the extraordinary lifestyle benefits on offer. Her love of the community and the slower, relaxed pace offered by rural living shines through. Prospective buyers buy into her infectious enthusiasm and passion, moving with pace to formalise their interest in these properties to avoid missing out.
If you’re considering buying or selling in the area, contact Leanne of LJ Hooker Esk for a confidential discussion.

MOORE WEEKLY STARS
October 3-9, 2022
ARIES
Harmonious partnerships and creative coupledom are highlighted as the Full Moon and Jupiter (in Aries) plus the Sun and Venus (in Libra) rev up relationships and joint ventures. If you combine diplomacy with dynamism (and Ram charm with a sense of adventure) then you’ll sail through challenges. Balance is the key. Your motto is from actress Claire Danes (who has Sun in Aries and Moon in Libra): “Relationships are a constant negotiation and balance.”
TAURUS
Moon stirs up inner compulsions, submerged secrets or hidden resentments. You could also become obsessed about someone from your complicated past. If you’re a bright Bull, you’ll learn from your mistakes, let go and move on. Inspiration for the week is from actress Kate Winslet (who turns 47 on Wednesday): “The good and bad things are what form us as people … change makes us grow.”
GEMINI
This week the Full Moon focus is on friendships: how to nurture them, keep them … and then let them go if you have outgrown each
LIBRA
Expect some relationship rumbles, as the Full Moon stimulates your partnership zone. Singles – look for love with an amorous Aries or an adventurous Aquarius (but don’t let them walk all over you). If you’re attached, now is the time to stand up for what you believe in. Otherwise your proactive partner could take the reins and ride the relationship in the direction and manner they prefer, with little input from you. A shared vision is vital for romantic longevity.
SCORPIO
You have strong likes and dislikes, and you don’t do things by halves. Especially when
word – cooperation – will get you a lot further, with fewer tantrums and tears. Positive Pluto aspects promise group activities, intense communication and powerful conversations.
(a fellow-Scorpio) says, “Often you have to rely on intuition.”
SAGITTARIUS
The Full Moon and Jupiter light up your drama zone so expect a week of extremes – every-

to long-term platonic relationships. Attached Twins – stop being scatterbrained and super-
forwards again, so your sweetheart is looking to you for some sensible and balanced advice. Singles – love and friendship are linked.
CANCER
Are you making the most of your mind? With Pluto and Mercury (which is now direct) activating your communication zone, detailed research and strategic thinking will take you far. Courtesy of the Full Moon, it’s a good
a professional project, give a speech, launch a website or start a social media campaign. But don’t underestimate the hard work and patience it will take to keep the wheels of progress turning.
LEO
The Full Moon and Jupiter rev up your gypsy gene and activate your adventure zone. So it’s a good time to escape somewhere special, whether it’s a much-anticipated holiday or a spontaneous weekend getaway. With Mercury moving forwards in your money
planning. Your motto is from fellow-Leo, artist Andy Warhol: “Making money is art and working is art and good business is the best art.”
VIRGO
Mercury is moving forwards in your sign so communication, travel and relationships should all start to improve. But the big lesson to learn is how to diversify and delegate. No one (not even a super-effective Virgo) is indispensable. And expect some dramatic developments to do with lust or loot, as the Full Moon stimulates your sex and money zones.
between a dream date and a disappointing dud, so tread carefully.
ments and dummy-spits. A troubled teenager or a feisty friend could push your buttons. So try to keep your composure, and don’t give
fessional projects are favoured – as long as you’re not a Sagittarian smart-aleck. Listen to the wise advice of a trusted colleague, teacher or mentor.
CAPRICORN
The Sun’s visiting your career zone, which boosts your ambitious streak. You’re keen to get ahead but don’t trample over others on
right between your personal and professional lives. Relationships will be complicated this week when passion is combined with power plays, and romance is coupled with responsibility. So expect some domestic dramas, as the Full Moon triggers prima donna moments
AQUARIUS
It’s a good week to expand your world via exciting local friendships and international contacts. If you link up with like-minded people, then it will open up new doors of opportunity. But be careful what you post online, as a casual comment could lead to
up your adventurous, spontaneous side. If you must be rebellious, then aim to be a rebel with a worthy cause.
PISCES
With Mercury moving forwards in your partnership zone, you’ll feel more motivated to sort out relationship problems than at other times. And you have a good chance of success, solutions and are prepared to compromise. But money matters could come to a head on the weekend when the Full Moon lights up

On Thursday 28th September we had a pairs game and another playoff in the A singles. Winners on the day were Phil Gregory and Linda Winkeler who def Cindy Mills and Neville Finlay in the pairs game, and Keith McWhirter who def. Len Smyth in the A singles.
Sunday 2nd October was our Cancer Charity Day sponsored by Brian Loveland and his band of helpers. The day started wet but we were able to get in 12 ends
to be. A very big thanks to everyone involved and despite the lower numbers than usual due to the early rain, the day became a very enjoyable and successful fund raiser. Also, a big thank you to all the sponsors on the day. Without you days like this could not happen.
Members and visitors please note that you are invited to play on Thursdays with names in by 12.00pm for a 12.30pm start and on Sundays with names in by 12.00pm for play at 12.30pm.
Please Contact Gerrit Winkeler on 5424 2569 should you wish to be involved with away games which ensure we have visitors at our home games. It’s time to get involved and make sure that Bowls in Toogoolawah continues into the future. Whether you are a resident or visitor to Toogoolawah, an experienced bowler or not, you are welcome to join us for a game. Novice players are given coaching lessons to ensure that they enjoy their game. To all those of you who are past bowlers, it is time for you to reunite with the club and get involved. Come along and make your presence felt while you get that necessary exercise to keep you going. We have bowls of all sizes for you to use.
For the Calendar:
1.Our next Club Meeting will be held on Sunday 9th October. All members are invited to attend at 9.00am and to help in the running of the club by participating in discussions.
2.Our next Pub Day will be held on Tuesday 15th November. Sponsors will be L J Hooker Esk and Toogoolawah.
3.Our next $10.00 Barefoot and Barby Day will be held on Saturday 15th October.
Please let your friends and associates know and help to make these days successful. Names in by 1.00pm for 1.30 start.
4.Players are still required for away games to ensure that we balance Home and Away attendance. Please contact Gerrit on 5424 2569 if you would like to be included in the roster.
5.Round 2 of our A Grade Championships will continue next week with John Greany to play Gerrit Winkeler. See you on the Green.
