Concerns over Mt Glen Rock plan

BY GRACE CRICHTON Several Esk residents have raised concerns after reading the draft report for the development of Mount Glen Rock.

The project, as outlined in the plan, is to develop the site as a multi-use adventure park with walking and mountain bike trails, rock climbing and abseiling.

Esk resident Eric von Nida VDLG KLV ¿UVW FRQFHUQ ZDV WKH number of walking tracks which are shared trails with mountain bikes, not solely for walkers.

“My immediate reaction was that, hold on, this is not about walking tracks,” he said.

“In the beginning of the plan they say ‘we’re giving walking tracks and mountain bike tracks’ but it’s not, it’s about mountain bike tracks.”

She and her husband Darren are concerned developments on the mountain and at its base will disturb local fauna.

“One of our primary concerns is the wildlife and their habitat,” Mrs Bate said.

Council seek feedback on Mt Glen Rock Opportunities for business, tourism Somerset Regional Council is open to community consultation on the long-term development of Mount Glen Rock.

The drafter Master Plan was released in early February alongside a ‘have your say’ survey.

Economic Development and Tourism Advisory Committee member Kylee Isidro said they want as

many people as possible to read and comment on the proposed development.

“The easiest way to do this is to complete our online survey,” Cr Isidro said.

“For those without internet access, copies of the Master Plan can be viewed at Somerset Libraries, where hard copy survey forms will be available.”

An information session

previously scheduled for tomorrow has been postponed.

“The Mount Glen Rock Community Information Session scheduled for Thursday 10 March has been postponed due to the recent severe weather event and recovery effort,” said a council-issued statement.

A future date is to be set.

The Mount Glen Rock Master Plan has been well received by a local business.

Out There Cycling owner operator Josie Sheehan said opening Mount Glen Rock to walkers, bike riders and rock climbers will provide another activity to participate in and another reason to visit the region.

“Making the Somerset

region a destination for visitors involves a wide range of things to see and do,” she said.

“Walking to a lookout above Esk and gazing around at the beautiful town and district will be magical.”

On top of economic EHQHÀWV IRU ORFDO RSHUDWRUV Ms Sheehan hopes the development will encour-

age locals to become more active and engaged with nature.

Ms Sheehan said community discussion is an important part of the process.

“This community discussion is great,” she said.

“Communities working together to make the town more beautiful, more successful is important.”

BY JACOB HAYDEN Rosewood Men’s Shed’s recent successful grant application will allow a much-needed expanVion to their workshop.

The men have been reconditioning the main building

to their needs for two years and decided to expand.

President Karl Wesner said the premises is very small and has a limited capacity.

“There’s a very dilapidated shed out the back, run down, falling to pieces,” Mr Wesner said.

“We’re going to try to refurbish that shed to a point where we can have a second workshop.

“This will give us an increase in surface area to do more of what Men’s Sheds do.”

Mr Wesner said the mem-

bers, mostly retired men, rely heavily on fundraising, donations, and grants.

“The COVID thing slowed us down pretty badly, mainly because we rely on things OLNH UD൷HV« FRXOGQ¶W HYHQ run a Bunnings barbecue,” Mr Wesner said.

“Men’s Sheds are places where men can come to talk to other people of the same ilk.

Church minister Darryl Groves said they prepared up to 120 meals and provided people with showers, bedding and other facilities during the ZHHNHQG·V ÁRRGLQJ “We did an emergency evacuation, so we had about 30 people staying here on the Friday night, then probably about 20 on Saturday night and 10 on Sunday,” Mr Groves said.

Young volunteer Mia had visited every day since Sunday night, three times a day, to prepare meals.

“Ever since [Sunday] night I’ve been like ‘these people are struggling, and

Remember, you are not alone

The impact of a long and severe drought, then some RI WKH ZRUVW EXVK¿UHV HYHU experienced.

Welcome rain followed, but ZLWK LW ÀRRGV Whilst the rain dealt with thee Q ¿UHV ÀRRGV EURXJKW WKHLU RZQ anguish with property damagee and precious topsoil washed away.

Then COVID struck.

Now we have more devasWDWLQJ ÀRRGV ZLWK ORVV RI OLIH and horrendous destruction of property.

In our region, many primary producers have lost everything, many businesses are severely impacted or lost forever, and many homes rendered totally uninhabitable.

IQ to tough times, it’s natural to feel down. But help is available to support your mental health.

All this can bring people to the point of mental disintegration, where nothing else matters except ending that pain. $ VLJQL¿FDQW SURSRUWLRQ RI WKH SRSXODWLRQ ZLOO VX൵HU VRPH

Remember, it is not what goes wrong in your life that counts: it is how you deal with it that matters.

3DP·V OLIH RI IDUP IDPLO\ DQG ÁRRGV Family is the most important thing in the world to Pamela Lindenmayer.

Born in Gatton to Jim and Connie Doughty, Pam was the second youngest of seven.

She went to school in Gatton and left at 14 to join her sister as a telephonist at WKH *DWWRQ 3RVW 2൶FH ZKHUH she worked for six and a half years.

In 1958, Pam married Colin Lindenmayer and moved to a farm in Lefthand Branch.

They met three years prior when Pam was her sister’s bridesmaid and Colin was his brother’s best man.

At 21, Pam was 13 years younger than Colin when they married, and her family had their concerns.

“Mum always said they like Col, ‘but he’s far too old for you and the marriage won’t last’,” Pam said.

The couple were married IRU \HDUV DQG KDG ¿YH children; Greg, Denise, Terry, Kaylene and Karen. ³, ZDV NHSW EXV\ ZLWK ¿YH kids.”

They also had nine grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren.

Pam fondly remembers her grand kids coming to her house during school holidays and making ice cream cakes for them.

I still miss him to this day, because there’s so many things you can talk to your husband about that you don’t need to talk to anybody else about.

At 85 years old, Pam Lindenmayer has devoted most of her life to her family.

Her mother was a lollies maker for her church, a tradition Pam continued for the Tabeel Fate for 15 years and which has now been passed on to her daughter Denise.

Pam has not been able to see very much of her family for the past couple years.

“With this COVID

business it was hard, we couldn’t always have visitors.

“I still think about them all the time and I do see them when I can.

“It was getting back to QRUPDO DQG WKHQ WKH ÀRRGV came.

“It was hard-going on the farm, you had droughts and ÀRRGV MXVW OLNH LW LV WRGD\ ´

7KH UHFHQW ÀRRGLQJ LQ February brought back some surprising memories for Pam. She recalled a return trip from the Gold Coast when their eldest, Greg, was one year old.

“The creek came down and we walked through the creek crossings.

had the port, it was scary and fun at the same time.”

'XULQJ ÀRRGLQJ HYHQWV WKH family would leave their car at Mt Sylvia State School, where Pam worked as a cleaner for a time, and then they would walk four miles to their farm.

“That was something I never thought I’d have to

do,” Pam said.

“Colin had the luggage, I WKLQN KH ZDV ZRUVH R൵ WKDQ me.

“I was worried but Colin wasn’t because he was used to it, but I saw a lot of them after that.”

In 1974 Pam’s family had planned a trip to Cooroy to visit her sister but they had to cancel when the creek rose and instead chose to visit Colin’s brother, their neighbour.

“We went on the tractor, carry-all with the kids and had lunch with them.

“Hanging on to the tractor, we were, it was very muddy and we had a lot of rain.”

That same year the family had a landslip behind the house.

“It was something we weren’t expecting to happen, where we were.

“We had our good times and our bad times, but we got over them all.”

Colin passed three years ago at the age of 95.

“I still miss him to this day, because there’s so many things you can talk to your husband about that you don’t need to talk to anybody else about,” Pam said.

Even though she has not seen her sister for a few years they still talk regularly.

“It’s amazing what you ¿QG WR WDON WR \RXU IDPLO\« you think about them, you live for your family.”

Bucking crazy at Mulga Bull Ride

BY JACOB HAYDEN Clear your schedules and get ready to kick up some dust because the Mulga Bull Ride is back on Friday night March 11 at the Mulgowie Hotel.

Hotel and event manager Sarah Croker said the highly popular event is always a sell-out and tickets are currently on sale through Eventbrite or the Mulgowie Hotel website.

“At this stage everything is full steam ahead, despite the crazy weather of the last couple of weekends,” Ms Croker said.

“We always do it twice a year and so far we have had luck on our side, under my reign, we’ve had two successful events.”

The Bull Ride will have open, novice and junior categories with cowboys from across the state coming to compete.

Gates open at 6pm and the bulls start bucking at

7pm with food available through to 11pm.

After the bull ride guests can dance the night away with Mik Oberle returning to host the after party, starting around 9:30pm.

“We get a lot of families with kids, they always come WR WKH ¿UVW SDUW RI WKH HYHQW and then disappear when all the drunken debauchery starts,” Ms Croker said.

Camping is available at the Mulgowie Show Hall Grounds where attendees can pay direct on site on the day.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions numbers for the event are capped at 1,500.

Tickets will not be available at the gate, so to avoid disappointment be sure to book ahead and have photo ID on the night.

Attendees must be double vaccinated as per Queensland Government Mandates and carry proof of vaccination for this event.

Come down to Mulgowie Hotel on March 11 for an epic event.

Revised plan to tackle family and domestic violence passed On January 14, the government release the draft National Plan to End Violence against Women and Children 2022-2032.

Minister for Women’s Safety Anne Ruston and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Women Marise Payne said we must recognise how race, age, disability, culture, gender, including gender identity, sexuality amongst others forms of identity, intersect and impact on this lived experience.

“To succeed we must listen, engage and be informed by diverse lived experiences which is why we are committed to ongoing engagement with victim-survivors,” she said.

“We must get this right.”

From Brisbane to Linville, Bill helps close gender super gap a boss in the boardroom In the days when it was rare to see woman-led companies, Carolyn Barker AM spent over two decades as CEO for a range of organisations.

At the same time, she sat on a number of boards, and as the only female board member, attempted to give GL൵HUHQW SHUVSHFWLYHV WR KHU all-male colleagues.

After leaving full time work as a professional CEO, Ms Barker’s career and community endeavours turned to the Brisbane Valley.

“I am secretary of the Linville Progress Association Inc., which was recently awarded the 2022 Community Group of the Year by Somerset Regional Council,” she said.

Women retire with about a third less super than men, according to Industry Super Australia (ISA).

In February, Parliament sealed legislation that would give a super boost to Australians on lower incomes, two thirds of are women.

Prior to February 10 and the passing of the Enhancing Superannuation Outcomes for Australians Bill, super was not paid if a worker earned less than $450 month.

Industry Super Australia Advocacy Director Georgia Brumby said abolishing the $450 threshold removed a structural inequity that discriminated against

those on lower incomes and disproportionately impacted women. ´,W LV D ZHOFRPH ÀUVW step towards addressing retirement inequality,” she said.

“The government and Parliament should be congratulated for delivering this overdue reform, but further measures – like paying super on Commonwealth parental leave – now need to be taken to ensure the next generation of women GR QRW IDFH ÀQDQFLDO insecurity at retirement.”

About 60% of those impacted by the $450 threshold are women.

The ISA said this is a step towards bridging the gender super gap.

Eloise Hill was always going to follow in her father’s footsteps and become a pharmacist.

Her mother was an academic, researching social issues.

Farewell Hally, the Onion Oracle Halwyn (Hally) William Herrmann was born on the February 12, 1940 at Lowood Hospital.

He was the fourth child for Ernest and Susanah.

He was baptised, and later FRQ¿UPHG DW =LRQ /XWKHUDQ Church in Minden. Hally was a member of the congregation throughout his life, becoming a church elder in his later years.

Hally was one of six children.

He was raised on the home farm in Prenzlau and started working as a young boy milking cows, cutting sorghum seed, cutting onions, carrots and beetroots. Hally started school at Prenzlau when he was six.

By age nine he could sow VHHG DQG VFX൷H FRUQ RQ KLV own. He left school when he was 13 and went into working on the farm.

On February 27, 1965 Hally married Mavis Steinhardt.

They were blessed with six children – Trevor, Heather, Pam, Glenn, Jenny and Steven. They bought a farm during the 1965 drought in Tarampa.

Over the years they bought two more farms.

After their separation, Hally cared for Trevor, Heather, Pam and Glenn full time while Mavis had Jenny and Steven, and they would visit their dad every second weekend and half the school holidays.

2Q WKH ¿UVW 6DWXUGD\ QLJKW in March in 1983, Hally met a lovely lady named Doreen at a dance in Ipswich.

7KH\ KLW LW R൵ VWUDLJKW away as they had a lot in common especially their love for horses.

On the December 17, 1983 Hally and Doreen Burns (nee

:DLQ ZHUH PDUULHG DW =LRQ Lutheran Church in Minden.

Doreen moved in with Hally and helped care for his six children as well as her own three children – Donna, Clay and Colin.

Hally and Doreen would often go to local pig and calf sales and made a lot of lifelong friends there.

From 1991- 1993 Hally and Doreen had the local mail run.

In 1994 they sold the dairy cattle, a tough decision to make.

In June 2009 Hally and Doreen decided the farm was too much for them and they

moved into Lowood.

Hally went out twice a day to check on things on the farm and feed the poddy calves.

Hally and Doreen lived a long and happy marriage of 32 years until Doreen sadly passed away in 2015.

Hally continued to live at home in Lowood after Doreen passed.

In 2020, his family made the hard decision to put him in Glenwood Blue Care nursing home in Lowood.

Hally was taught to play cards (mainly Euchre) by his Grandad when he was four and continued to play cards

socially his whole life.

He was still playing cards at the nursing home most days.

Before going to the nursing home Hally enjoyed a few rounds of beer at the local pub most afternoons.

Hally loved to celebrate his and Doreen’s birthdays as they were only two days apart and on milestone years there was always a big celebration.

He was well known for his pancakes that he made all the kids and grandkids and for putting condensed milk in his FR൵HH DQG RQ KLV :HHW EL[ He loved to go to the local

shows, rodeos and cattle sales regularly to catch up with other farmers for a good old yarn.

Hally became famous in 2018 for his onion cutting forecast and was known as the “Onion Oracle”.

Every New Year’s Eve he cut an onion and placed it in layers then rubbed salt in each layer.

When he woke up he then read the next 12 months’ weather according to the amount of moisture that was visible.

He was taught this old German tradition as young boy by his neighbour and it became his yearly ritual for over 60 years.

The cutting of the onion will be carried on by a few grandkids who have learnt the ropes over the years.

Hally was a real family man who loved and cherished all his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren unconditionally.

He was very blessed with 27 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren with two more on the way.

Hally read his bible and hymn book daily and would pray every night for God to keep his family safe and well.

His faith was an important part of his life which helped him through the hard times Hally passed away peacefully at 11:45am on Tuesday February 8 at Ipswich Hospital surrounded by loved ones.

Old Boys day marks 100 years Marking a century of the club, this year’s Black Pigs Old Boys Day will be one for the books.

The Gatton Black Pigs Rugby Club will welcome back former players to the Hugh Courtney Oval, UQ, on March 19.

Club president Jack Slack said former Pigs come from ‘all over’ to catch up with mates and play the current team.

“The Old Boys Day is a chance for the current players of the Black Pigs to have a trial game, have a bit of a run, and to SOD\ the old boys who want to come back and stick it to the younger blokes,” Mr Slack said.

“They put their old jerseys on, make up a team on the day and play an exhibition match.

“It’s always pretty fun, and pretty funny.”

The game will be played in quarters, Mr Slack said, because some of the old boys µDUHQ¶W DV ¿W DV WKH\ XVHG WR be.’

The Pigs started the old boys’ days in 2019.

“This year, since it’s the big century, we’re putting all RXU H൵RUWV LQWR LW ´ 0U 6ODFN said.

The Gatton Hawks are inviting girls aged 12 to 17 to join their club and train for the upcoming Toowoomba Junior Rugby League Competition.

Nolan said the club was keen to increase their junior membership and encouraged girls to come along and give training a try.

“Have a look, have a go and see if you like it,” Ms Nolan said.

for them to come along to a couple sessions before they decide if they would really like to play.

The Gatton Hawks Junior Girls team had a very successful year in 2019, however QXPEHUV VWHDGLO\ GURSSHG R൵ during COVID.

“With such a successful open women’s team in the seniors it would be good to see if we could get some of those juniors coming through the ranks and keep the senior team going,” Ms Nolan said.

“The pathways for the girls are really starting to open

up and improve over the last couple of years.”

7KH ¿UVW JDPH RI WKH VHDson is set for April 23, so any girls considering still have time to apply.

Training is Tuesday and Thursday 5pm at Cahill Park with games on Saturdays.
