Neumann’s plans for Somerset region

IT’S EASY enough to make promises during election campaigns, the real test of character is the ability to follow through.

The re-elected federal member for Blair, Shayne Neumann, made a broad range of commitments for Ipswich and Somerset, with a focus on roads and tourism.

“I think this is one of the fastest growing areas in all of Queensland and we need to invest in jobs and infrastructure,” Mr Neumann said. $10 million has been allocated to the last stage of the Ipswich Motorway upgrade.

“About 85,000 people

a day here drive on the Ipswich Motorway, plenty of them from the Somerset region and rural Ipswich.”

Another $14 million will fund a new Head to Health adult mental health centre, and $2.5 million will upgrade the Kambu Health Service, which supports indigenous communities to the West of Brisbane.

Mr Neumann said being in a majority government will help him secure funding.

“One of the biggest frustrations I’ve had is I think the federal government has been a missing link for funding in our region,” he said.

“When we were last in, I got the money for the Black Soil interchange which was

crucial to help people in the Somerset region.

“I’ll have better access to the ears of ministers now.”

He said Labor had commitments to improve NBN and mobile phone coverage in regional areas. ³:H VDZ WKH GL൶FXOW\ ZH had with Linville.

“We ended up with a 1997 second-hand Toyota Corolla equivalent of NBN coverage at the price of a Mercedes Benz.”

Mr Neumann said he was proud of his achievements in Somerset like the Fernvale Indoor Sports Centre, Somerset Civic Centre, BVRT upgrades, The Condensery project, Kilcoy Information Centre and showgrounds upgrades.

INDIAN, Bangladesh and Burmese community members are invited to attend community forums at Gatton Shire Hall at 4pm Tuesday June 14 to discuss concerns and challenges faced by their communities.

The event is part of the delivery of the Community Action for a Multicultural Society (CAMS) program which aims to connect culturally and linguistically diverse people with the wider community.

Chopping locks to raise vital funds for sick friend

THREE Lockyer Valley girls will shave their heads in a campaign to raise money for a young girl living with cancer. $EELH &KXUFK ¿UVW shaved her head several weeks ago to show support for her cousin, Ava, who has stage 4 high risk neuroblastoma.

When Abbie came to school with her new haircut, friend Emily Oweczkin wanted to do her part to help.

“I remember Abbie coming to school with her hat on,” Emily said. ³6KH WRRN LW R൵ DQG VKH showed me that she’d shaved her head and she told me why she did it.”

Emily’s younger sister, Peyton, soon put up her hand too and the three girls, along with Abbie’s mother Caro-

lyn, will shave their heads at Porters Plainland Hotel on June 17.

They girls have set an ambitious goal of $20,000.

Although Ava and mum 7L൵DQ\ DUH FXUUHQWO\ VWD\LQJ at Ronald McDonald House, they will need to leave after her next round of treatment DQG QHHG WR ¿QG D SODFH WR live.

Nine-year-old Ava has alUHDG\ HQGXUHG ¿YH URXQGV RI induction chemotherapy plus surgery to remove an 8cm tumour from her abdomen.

“This money will be used to make sure they have somewhere good to live and food to eat,” Abbie said.

“Even if we don’t get $20,000 that’s alright but we thought it would be really cool,” Emily said.

Peyton, 9, is not nervous about losing her blonde locks.

young people and elders together.

Local businesses give back

BY GRACE CRICHTON A LITTLE goes a long way for Gatton charity Bootstraps.

The veteran’s charity received a donation of $1900 from local business RDO Equipment and was a recipient of a $1000 Australia Post grant.

Bootstraps CEO Sam Kavanagh said the funding was VLJQL¿FDQW DQG ZRXOG KHOS the group keep going.

“I don’t have much to give back except my thanks,” Mr Kavanagh said.

“It means so much to us.

“It will keep our doors open for another three to six months.”

RDO Equipment branch manager David Stockwell said the team looked for a grass-roots organisation to raise funds for.

“I think they’re doing a great job here, it’s great what they’re doing for the vets,” Mr Stockwell said.

“We want to help people in the area.”

“I thought it was something that might help, because I saw that there were

Mr Kavanagh said the money would help buy leather, tools, and pay the rent.

The West Moreton Anglican College student ZDV RQH RI RQO\ ÀYH students to represent the Greater Brisbane region after successfully presenting her speech on why and how the constitutional preamble should change last year.

Alexandra said it was a privilege to represent Queensland and to have her voice heard.

“It was fantastic to collaborate with other students from around Australia on such a worthwhile topic,” Alexandra said.

Local law and Gatton icon passes KENNETH Charles Hooper was the quiet, strong anchor of his family.

A man with deep faith, who loved unconditionally.

Almost 90 years ago in Laidley, Charles and Eva +RRSHU ZHOFRPHG WKHLU ¿UVW child, a son, Kenneth Charles.

He is the oldest brother of Ann, Eleanor, Judy, Don, and Peter.

Kenneth was educated at Laidley North State School until the age of ten.

He then boarded at Church of England Boys School, followed by Toowoomba Grammar.

He lived for holidays when he could be back with family and friends, either at Laidley or ‘The Ripples,’ their holiday home at Surfers Paradise back when the Esplanade was a dirt road.

It was where he learnt to bodysurf and his love of surf lifesaving started.

After a not so successful ¿UVW \HDU DW 84 ODZ WRR much time playing cards, watching movies, and drinking beer he said) Kenneth was articled to solicitors in Brisbane, admitted as a solicitor in 1956 and worked for just over a year in the family law practice in Laidley – CW Hooper and Hooper Solicitors.

A couple of years before this, Kenneth became a Christian and publicly gave his life to Jesus at the West End Methodist Church.

7KLV ZDV WR EH D GH¿QLQJ moment that shaped and moulded his whole future.

It was here he also met and fell in love with Val. In his words, ‘she is the love of my life.’

In October of 1957 he was accepted into the Methodist ministry and became engaged to Val. As ministry students were not allowed to marry, this engagement lasted four years.

In 1958 he was thrown in the deep end and worked ‘on probation’ as a lay minister at Home Hill in North 4XHHQVODQG WKHQ WKUHH \HDUV at King’s College as a theological student graduating in 1961. .HQQHWK DQG 9DO ¿QDOO\ married on December 2, 1961 and from then on it became ‘Ken and Val’, a lifelong love partnership p that would last over 60 years. ears. heir After their wedding, they moved to Mareeba for Kenneth’ss ¿UVW R൶FLDO ministry.

After this his Kenneth worked as resident chaplain to Brisbane Boys College, and it was during this time their daughter Margaret was born.

He enjoyed his time at BBC and especially enjoyed coaching the rugby teams.

In January 1968, Kenneth

started working full time in the Gatton practice and in the same month David was born.

A second son, John completed the family and the children had a happy childhood growing up in Gatton.

Kenneth had an amazing work ethic combined with a deep care of people.

He worked hard but was always supported by ‘his JLUOV¶ DV KH FDOOHG WKHP WKH VWD൵ DW WKH SUDFWLFH He knew and appreciated how hard they worked, but they also had a lot of fun.

3DVW VWD൵ UHFHQWO\ VDLG KH was a beautiful man, a great boss, and they enjoyed work-

ing for him.

With a servant’s heart, Kenneth was highly involved in the community.

Everything from Rotary, to kindergarten, leagues club, high school P&C, church elder, lay preacher, an attempted stint in politics, and an advocate for the Gatton hospital, and ten years ‘hard slog’ as president helping get the Amaroo Aged Person home built in Gatton.

In 1989, Kenneth retired as a solicitor, and started as an administrator at Rangeville 8QLWLQJ &KXUFK DQG KH DQG Val moved to Toowoomba. +H ¿QDOO\ UHWLUHG LQ After a time of house sitting, van living, and renting, in 2007 they were able to realise their dream and moved into a waterfront unit at Palm Beach.

It was a happy time of nearly ten years; Kenneth walked and swam most mornings.

Val said those years brought them even closer together.

To be closer to family, they moved to the Sunshine Coast in 2016.

Towards the end of Kenneth’s life, the hospital visits increased and the hospital VWD൵ RIWHQ FRPPHQWHG RQ KLV beautiful nature.

The last afternoon before he died his family were with him, told them how much they loved him, and shared memories and were able to say goodbye.

RADF funding open for professional development LOCKYER Valley artists can now apply for the latest round of Regional Arts Development Fund grants.

Financial assistance of up to $1000 is available to individuals and organisations for individual professional development, skills development workshops, mentorships, master classes and seminars.

Lockyer Valley Community Services Portfolio Councillor Michael Hagan said the funding would provide engaging and exciting opportunities.

“This is a great opportunity for emerging and established artists, artistic groups, or art workers to develop their creative practice and arts business,” he said.

“Arts and culture certainly go a long way towards fostering strong communities and I encourage those interested to apply for this special funding round.

“The successful recipients of the RADF funding will no doubt increase their art career and develop future opportunities for projects that enhance the Lockyer Valley community.”

RADF is a partnership between Lockyer Valley Regional Council and the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland.

The event is one of the few in the region to still hold a dinner and dance, while still

inviting locals to compete for the various categories to represent Rosewood at the Royal Queensland Show.

Rosewood Agricultural and Horticultural Society Inc. president Craig Christensen said The Let’s Dance Band

would entertain with music for every taste.

“It’s a good night for anyone looking for a dance,” Mr Christensen said.

“We try to cover all ages so everyone has something to dance to.”

Society secretary and Show Ball coordinator for over ten years Kate Hillan said the night caters to young and old.

“We try to make it for the young ones but still encourage the older generation because… it’s through the

older generation that we all started going to the balls and the dance,” Ms Hillan said.

“If it wasn’t for them we probably wouldn’t go, ourselves.

“We get a lot of city people that come out to the Show

Ball and they come every year because they thoroughly enjoy themselves.”

I am glad today our show is going ahead this year despite COVID-19 still being around.

There were doubts earlier in the year when show attendees had to be double vaccinateG, but these restrictions were lifted after Easter.

It was absolute relief and a ORDG OLIWHG R൵ RXU VKRXOGHUV We still have to focus on social distancing where possible and sanitising our hands is a must.

Sections that were missing last year – Cooking and Fine Arts – have returned with no restrictions.

Horse classes grown ‘out of sight’, attract hundreds HORSES from across Queensland will be journeying to Lowood to compete in the town’s Annual Show.

The end goal for a horse, of course, is to qualify for the Brisbane Royal Show (the Ekka) and the only way to get points is to compete in agricultural shows.

Lowood Show Society vice president, chief horse steward and ringmaster Bruce Vayro said seeing people bring in their horse exhibits and vie for placings is what made his day.

“I come from a horse background and that’s been a part of my whole life,” Mr Vayro said.

Mr Varyro has been stewarding for 32 years, and said rural shows bring the community together.

“Local shows are the fabric of every local community,” he said.

There are over 644 classes in the horse program for the 2022 Lowood Show.

“Since I’ve run the Lowood Show’s horse events, it’s grown out of sight.

then over the years I started increasing the classes and recognising breeds that horse exhibitors show.”

“It just kept growing and growing and now it’s become one of the most premier shows,” Mr Vayro said.

“We get horses from Toowoomba, Gold Coast,

even over the New South Wales border and all the way up Sunshine Coast.

“A couple years ago we had horses travel three hours one way just to get here.”

EXHIBITORS at the 2022 Lowood Show’s horticulture section are being told to ‘give it their best shot’.

Chief steward Graham Bayliss has 40 years of experience exhibiting, staging entries and talking with judges.

He said it’s expected the recent adverse weather conditions may reduce this year’s entries, so he’s calling on all potential exhibitors to have a crack.

“A show is only a show if you can make it a show,” Mr Bayliss said.

“The judge will be looking for freshness of entries at peak maturity, clean and free of pests and diseases.”

The horticulture section will GLVSOD\ FXW ÁRZHUV SRW SODQWV DQG ÁRUDO DUW ZLWK D MXQLRU class for children of primary school age.

Entries will be accepted between 3pm-5pm June 9 or 7:45am-10am on June 10.

Family farm showcases diversity and adaptability

BY JACOB HAYDEN MOIRA Farming in Forest Hill was under the spotlight on Monday morning June 6 after a tour bus of growers, scientists and industry professionals travelled from Brisbane.

The Hort Connections 2022 horticulture conference and trade show, hosted by AUSVEG and the International Fresh Produce Association, invited attendees to travel out to Forest Hill to meet the team at Moira Farming and take away insights from a leading Queensland vegetable grower business.

Farm manager Mitch Brimblecombe said he wanted to show ‘a bit of diversity’.

a bit but we feel we have a story to tell about our journey and where we’re trying to go,” Mitch said.

On the tour Mitch discussed irrigation, infrastruc-

“At the moment we’ve all got labour problems and price problems so we’re trying to make our diversity

in a way so that we’re not dependent on market variable products like broccoli, onion or pumpkin,” he said.

“We’re concentrating on sweet corn and green bean

which can be locked in on contracts.”

Mitch said the family-run business was very excited about solar energy as pumping water from their three

dams to the farm is costly “Fuel prices, the way they’re going, electricity, there is talk of price rises… we’re like any business, we just try and cut costs where we can.”

The farm has a rich family history, with Mitch’s great grandfather passing the farm down to his son, then Mitch’s father Linton, and now to Mitch.

Moira Farming director Linton Brimblecombe said the idea was to empower the next generation.

“The best way to empower someone to keep them focussed is through debt and we will willingly hand our debt on to Mitchell,” Linton joked.

“Fundamentally it’s about SURYLGLQJ IRRG DQG ¿EUH for the people we feed, the people of Australia and the world.”

Stocktake workshops at Boonah and Kilcoy STOCKTAKE workshops are focused on balancing available pasture with animal demand.

Presented by Greg Bath (DAF) and Bruce Lord (Healthy Land & Water), the Boonah workshop was

attended by 19 landholders from 12 businesses based in the Logan/Albert catchment.

The Kilcoy workshop was attended by 12 landholders from 10 businesses operating in the Upper Brisbane

and Stanley catchments.

The learning started in the classroom with practical information on topics including land condition, forage budgeting and pasWXUH LGHQWLÀFDWLRQ After lunch (and perhaps

a few too many egg and lettuce sandwiches) participants headed out into the paddock to throw some quadrats, cut some grass, and learn how to set up a pasture monitoring site.

Learning how to create

your own pasture photo standards, which are a fantastic tool for graziers, was a highlight of the day.

This activity was supported by the Queensland Government Department of Agriculture and Fisheries

and Healthy Land & Water through funding from the Queensland Government Department of Resources’ Natural Resources Investment Program.

The wet weather and cooling temperatures have encouraged some slippery tenants to take residencies in people’s homes.

LV&S Snake Catchers strongly advised to call licenced snake handlers to deal with slippery intruders.

“A lot of people have no idea how to handle a snake,” Mr Anderson said.

“To save a little bit of coin people would rather do it themselves, and that’s why we get people bitten by snakes meaning the ambulance have to come out.”

“If a snake goes inside your house, if you shut the door and place a towel under the door it will prevent its escape, and that makes capture a lot easier for us.”

Fully Customised 1969 HG Premier

BY DAVID GREER SPRING Creek resident Patrick Foley is the proud owner of this custom 1969 HG Premier.

Pat said when he got his OLFHQFH KLV ¿UVW FDU ZDV D +* Kingswood and he soon fell in love with the HG model.

When he turned 20 years old, he moved on to own the upgraded raded HG Premier. r.

Life changess and Pat sold his ¿UVW Premier, but he always thought ld he would like to get another one day day.

About ten years ago, Pat found one for sale in South Australia and so he hooked the car trailer up and did the haul down to get it.

Pat said it took approximately six years to do a full custom restoration of this Premier, and may I say he did a hell of a job.

Nothing was missed, every nut and bolt is new with so many custom billet built parts.

The magic looking paint colour is Persian Sands with PLUURUHG ¿QLVK HYHQ WKH engine bay!

Under carriage is in a matte Persian Sands colour.

gap with a 750 CFM quick fuel carbie.

The distributor, coil, leads

Manifold is an RPM air

and ignition control are all MSD. The transmission is a turbo

350 with 3200rpm stall converter and the transmission cooler is hidden underneath the car.

Wilwood 320mm diameter disk brakes front and back are drilled and slotted with 4 piston callipers.

The rear end has a custom LQFK GL൵ ZLWK D 6WUDQJH Performance 28 spline Detroit Truetrac centre with 3.70:1 gear ratio.

The Premier also has Aircon and Power steering.

Pat said he wanted something original for the interior, so he had a fully customised leather interior made.

Dash cluster is custom made with six Smith Gauges while the door handles, window winders and door pulls are all custom billet.

In the boot Pat has a custom setup with the 110lt drop tank and the battery.

The exhaust is 2.5 inch headers with 3 inch stainless steel system using Vband and billet hanger brackets, all well tucked up to keep it all tidy, Pat said.

Pat said he had all new glass and rubbers throughout the car, all exterior stainless steel has been re-worked and polished with the bumpers customised and re-chromed.

Pat said the HG hasn’t done too many kilometres VLQFH EHLQJ ¿QLVKHG EXW KH did get to a few car meets and shows which he had multiple trophies and awards for and hopes to get it out more in the near future.

To celebrate the reopening, Lockyer Valley Regional Council and the Australian Skateboarding Community Initiative (ASCI) will host the (WQLHV $P 6HULHV RQ -XQH with a direct pathway to the pro championship Rumble on the Reef.

ASCI managing director and Rumble on the Reef event manager Donny Fraser said competitors from as far as Townsville and North NSW would be attending.

“It’s good to be able to see them on your home turf, in your own skatepark,” Mr Fraser said.

“They’ll reignite the park and encourage some new tricks.”

BY JACOB HAYDEN A TEAM of eight young, aspiring Olympic swimmers have travelled the globe from Czechia and Slovakia to train in Gatton.

The team, aged between 14

and 18, are here to train 20 KRXUV D ZHHN IRU ¿YH ZHHNV at the Lockyer Valley Sports and Aquatic Centre by Swim Fit Gatton’s head coach Tom Fronek, who recently achieved his Gold Coaching accreditation.

Mr Fronek has coached since 1988 and also works with the Czechoslovakian Swimming Federation in youth development.

He said he ran swim camps in Australia twice a year and other camps back in Europe.

“[Swimmers] always follow me wherever I go, ,¶OO JR GL൵HUHQW SODFHV WR GR work and they’ll come where I am,” Mr Fronek said. ³:H ¿QG WKDW $XVWUDOLD IRU them, is very refreshing and they learn new things.

“There’s some very talented swimmers in here.”

One of his students, 16 year-old Klara Svobodova, said she and her sister were inspired by their mother who competed in the Olympics as a synchronised swimmer.

“He’s a funny person and I think he’s a good coach,” Klara said. ³, WUDLQ KDUG DQG LW SD\V R൵ and that’s the best feeling.

Klara and the team have been enjoying their time in Gatton.

NOLAN REPS QLD IN NRLW

RISING Rugby league talent Ashlea Nolan has earnt a place in the Queensland under 19 Sapphires team ahead of the Women’s National Championships.

Nolan, 18, plays for the Gatton Hawks and Brisbane Tigers and will represent at nationals from June 9 to 12 at Burleigh.

It’s a step toward State of Origin.

“From nationals they choose one Queensland team to play under 19s State of Origin,” Nolan said.

“It’s a goal to be able to get there.”

With two successful seasons with the Hawks under her belt, taking out premierships in under 17s and open women’s, the Gatton local is looking forward to representing the state.

“I’m really excited for the opportunity to go play at nationals.”

As a former swimmer, Nolan prefers to camaraderie of rugby league. ³, ORYH JHWWLQJ RXW RQ WKH ¿HOG DQG playing with my mates,” she said.

“I’m really in it for the team.”
