A WORD FROM BRUCE Let’s send a huge shout out to our SES crews.

In the most treacherous conditions and under enormous pressure, they have once again performed with distinction.

While we were at home and rain poured down, these selfless people risked life and limb and they do it for no payment.

Pure and simple, they are wonderful corporate citizens.

They are out all night and then you see the same faces the next day filling sandbags and coordinating the region’s

disaster plan.

The saying ‘heroes wear orange’ was never truer than during the last week.

These selfless volunteers witness some of the best and worst of humanity as they spend sleepless nights in the rain and on roofs and places many of us would never think of venturing in the rainy and dark weather.

They are congratulated and abused all in the same night as they set out to make someone else’s life just a little bit better at the expense of their own.

So next time the rain is tumbling down outside, and you are curled up snuggly in your bed, please spare a thought for the selfless individuals in the orange overalls who take on the most arduous of tasks in the most horrendous weather.

‘All hell broke loose’

Gatton SES volunteer Rachel Wade said the Lockyer Valley unit took on 47 jobs when storms ravaged the valley on November 26 and 27.

“All hell broke loose,” she said.

“We were in Gatton, Laidley, Laidley North, Hatton Vale, Forest Hill, Regency Downs, Plainland, you name it, we went there.

“Sandbagging [jobs] mainly, but we had three heights - going up on the

roofs that are leaking.

“We had assistance from fire comm, because we had one street in Laidley that was going under in a hurry and they had to get the residents out,” Mrs Wade said.

“The red trucks went in there.”

The team went to a home in Adare on Friday afternoon before the night’s storms truly hit.

“And then it went downhill fast,” Mrs Wade said.

Flooded roads meant the crew had to take the long way home.

“We had a crew go out to Hatton Vale and they went 50km out of their way to get back home, because their way was flooded so badly,” Mrs Wade said.

“It’s a good thing they know their local area.”

It was a long night for the team.

“We finished up at half past midnight on Friday night, Saturday morning.

“Then on Saturday we had 17 [jobs].

“So it wasn’t quite so bad.”

The SES unit set up two sandbagging stations, one in Gatton and one in Laidley, and manned these as well as going out on jobs.

“I think the residents have got the message that there’s sandbags and sand available at two places,” Mrs Wade said.

“I think they’re going faster in Laidley.”

Bakery the best in the business

The Old Fernvale Bakery has collected another five medals this month at the Australian Pie contest, with owner Bill Rose saying the bakery has been a labour of love for many years.

“My wife Lyn really started the bakery, we’ve been married for 53 years, and we’ve been in the business for 53 years, it could be 54 now,” Mr Rose said.

“She wasn’t a qualified baker back then, but she did a lot of the decorating for cakes, the lamingtons and cream buns and those types of things.”

Fernvale has grown significantly since the early days of the Old Fernvale Bakery some thirty years ago too, according to Bill.

“There was about 500 people living in Fernvale around that time and now of course there’s probably three and a half thousand,” he said.

And just like the population, the Old Fernvale Bakery has expanded over time too.

“Prior to COVID, we had 42 staff working for us, and that had become normal,” Bill said.

“We just believed that bakeries had a future in country towns.”

“We’ve always tried to make sure we had good bakers working for

us and of course then we created quite a number of good bakers ourselves.”

Bill is not lying about producing good bakers, with previous bakers winning apprentice of the year awards and finishing runner up in the national titles in 2019.

“Our apprentices have had ongoing success because they get well-trained as opposed to apprentices working for supermarkets,” Bill said.

“We now have Amos, who is a fully qualified baker and contributor to the winning pies from this year.

“My senior pie maker is Bradley Gordon and Bradley’s won numer-

ous awards.

“I’ve always done my best to help young people become great bakers and I still believe that’s what the industry is all about.

“These competitions are great too because they encourage bakers right throughout Australia to upskill themselves, and that’s the biggest reward.”

As for the future, Bill said the bakery will continue in the safe hands of his young apprentices, who are as passionate about baking as Bill and Lyn are after all these years.

“We’re a boutique bakery, we always will be,” Bill said.

Christmas can be tough but there are ways to help to reduce stress and depression. The season has the potential to create memories, sadness, stress and anxiety but there are ways to help reduce stress and depression.

We put pressure on ourselves going to different places and accommodating family and friends.

Christmas should be a time for families to come together, relax and enjoy each other’s company.

However, people suffering depression can be further depressed by the joyful spirit at Christmas time, simply because they cannot resonate with that joyfulness.

There are some simple but effective things to focus on to help.

Don’t look at other people and envy them. Look at yourself and appreciate the good that you are and appreciate what you have. Focus on simplicity and an attitude of gratitude. Concern yourself only with the things that you can control. Social media, for instance, can be a great source of stress. Do not expend energy on things that you cannot control. This will reduce the chance being stressed and depressed.

Maintain mental resilience and fortitude by keeping our lives uncomplicated but productive.

Remember, it is not what goes wrong in your life that matters. It is what you do about it that counts.

Top achievers at Sophia

Sophia College celebrated achievements in learning, sport, art, and culture at their mass and awards day last Thursday.

The Catholic college in Plainland opened with a foundation cohort of grade seven students.

Five students were recognised for attaining the highest results in the curriculum.

Rachel Payne topped the class in English, Japanese, designer technologies, mathematics, and science.

Paityn Hendry was the highest achieving student in health and physical education, humanities, and social sciences.

Mikayla Francisco topped

digital technologies, Chloe George was the highest achiever in the arts, and Lola Monaghan received the award for religious education.

The college awarded two sports awards.

Henry Shepley was awarded Sportsperson of the Year.

He has competed for Sophia College at the Lockyer Carnival, represented at Met West and Western Rangers events.

Jayden Kearney was awarded the Brisbane Catholic Education Spirit of Sport Award for representing his school and community with pride.

The college awarded four stu-

dents the Living Stones awards.

The recipients were Rachel Payne for community, Paityn Hendry for learning, Robert Bell for service, and Samantha Haley for prayer.

Several students received recognition for completing digital courses.

In her address, Sophia College principal Narelle Dobson said she was proud of the students.

“I am honoured to be your principal, and you make me proud to be a Sophian,” she said.

“I am grateful for your joy, your astute insights, your genuine welcome, and your growing talents.”

Mulgowie welcomes Santa Santa visited Mulgowie Markets on Saturday to spread Christmas cheer and hand out candy canes, but he might be back for another visit at their Twilight Markets.

Committee member Rob Arnolda said the markets, on December 11 from 4pm, will be the first time Mulgowie have done an evening market.

“As soon as we put the word out for it, everyone jumped on board really quickly,” he said.

“The response has been overwhelming.

“It will be a completely new and exciting experience for everybody.”

The usual Mulgowie Market stall holders will be there, plus free face painting and a jumping castle.

“It will be a similar sort of market to what we normally do but a different vibe and we’ll hopefully attract some new people,” Mr Arnolda said.

‘We’re going to have Boyd Ridley playing music for us.

“Hopefully we’ll be able to light up under the tree and put some lights in the tree.

Police appeal for information on armed robbery

Detectives investigating the armed robbery of a bank in Rosewood last week are making a public appeal to identify a person who may be able to assist with their enquiries.

About 1.10pm on December 1, an unknown man entered a bank on John Street and produced a firearm, demanding money.

The man then left the bank on foot with a sum of crash.

Detectives from the Ipswich Criminal Investigation Branch have released vision and images of a man they believe may be able to assist with investigations.

Anyone with information about this matter or the identity of the man depicted are encouraged to contact police.

Esk Community Choir celebrated the Christmas season at their annual concert on Sunday.

They were joined by Toowoomba choir Women in Harmony Multicultural Choir and Esk State School Band.

The choirs combined to perform Christmas songs including a jazzy take on Good King Wenceslas.

Women in Harmony Multicultural Choir were true to their name and performed songs from across the globe.

Flautists Suzanne Clemence and Ruth Skippen with Alexis Fitzgerald performed Divertissement by Johann Christian Bach.

Still strong after a century The Newman family, whose ancestor John Newman donated land and timber for the church’s construction.

St Francis Xavier Church, Coominya was opened on March 6, 1921 and the church community came to mark the 100 year milestone on Sunday.

Archbishop Mark Coleridge presided over the mass which was followed by lunch on the lawn in the church grounds.

“The people who have gathered within the building over its time are a great gift to Coominya,” he said.

Descendants of the pioneering families who built the church came for the celebrations.

Parishioner Brenda Moloney thanked the visitors, many of whom travelled a great distance to share in the celebrations.

“Your ancestors saw a need for a church in this community and proceeded to become instruments of God in making it possible,” she said.

Guest shared in a cake to celebrate.

Lockyer Valley SES is ready for action The SES unveiled their new equipment at the Gatton station last week, purchased with a grant from the Foundation for Rural Regional Renewal.

The station purchased a suite of battery-operated Milwaukee tools to replace their older equipment.

Lockyer Valley deputy local controller Graham Wade said instead up just replacing the batteries “We decided to look around for a grant to replace the whole lot,” he said.

A major new asset is battery-operated lights for emergency traffic control

situations.

The tripod-mounted lights will eliminate the need to carry the 240V lights in the truck and in turn eliminates the need for generators, lightening the load in the truck.

“Our approach with this new gear is to eliminate weight and make things easi-

er,” Mr Wade said.

They are kitted out with a new drill set, chain saws, pole saw, the lights, small work lights, battery charger station.

The station also purchased harnesses for the radios.

“They’re fairly heavy radios,” Mr Wade said.

“So we got radio harnesses, should pads, neck straps, to make the use of our new radios a bit more comfortable for the guys and girls as well.”

Rachel Wade said the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) provided a drill set to the station.

“We’d already got one of

these from QFES,” she said.

“This is what made us go down the line of Milwaukee, because it’s the way QFES are going.

“Milwaukee themselves came to the party and gave us some accessories.”

In total, the grant was $10,178.

“Council has an online disaster management dashboard that is maintained in real time and

allows residents to know exactly what is happening in their area, whether that relates to flooding, road closures or bushfires.

“The State Government

also has the Get Ready website, a resource for planning ahead and taking action in preparing your property for potential natural disasters.

As the festive season speeds closer, the Lockyer Chamber of Commerce and Industry is taking on the role of Santa in the Twelve Days of Christmas promotion.

Lockyer Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Paul Emmerson said the promotion spreads Christmas spirit across the valley with a ‘shop local’ message.

“We are giving away $1200 in gift cards,” Mr Emmerson said.

“That’s one $100 Lockyer Valley gift card every day for twelve days.”

He said it is simple to enter the competition.

Giving away $100 every day for 12 days is the chamber’s way of thanking shoppers for supporting chamber member businesses throughout the year, Mr Schollick said.

Lowood Christmas Carnival is coming The Lowood Christmas Carnival kicks of at 5pm this Saturday at the Lowood Showgrounds, with Show Society President Lynell Jendra saying the free event is fun for the whole family.

“There will be a ham wheel with one-dollar tickets and food stalls all night with hamburgers and hot chips,” Mr Jendra said.

“There will also be lots of ride for the

kids, face painting, and we’re even hoping to get a jumping castle.

Santa is coming to Forest Hill this Friday The Forest Hill Christmas Carnival is on this Friday from 5:30pm until late, with Secretary Ann Bichel saying the patrons can expect a fantastic night of fun with friends and family.

“Our dedicated community groups will be in assistance on the night running various food, novelty stalls, and of course the ham wheels,” Ms Bichel said.

“There will be some spectacular lighting shows to add

the extra special sparkle to the event.

“There will be live music from 5:30pm and Santa and his family will be in attendance from 7:30pm, with a parcel for all children.

“Food stalls start at 5pm, rides start at 5:30pm and first spin of the night will be on the Flanagan wheel at 5:45pm.

“Forest Hill Christmas Carnival is the place to be this Friday night.”

After creek crossings flooded and roads were closed Ma Ma Creek Community Centre stood firm and hosted its inaugural live music concert as part of ‘Festival of Small Halls’ last Tuesday.

After the crowd of over 100 people enjoyed dinner, the MC for the night, Pepper Jane, invited local musician Troy Troutman to open the show.

He was followed by Tullara who fascinated the crowd with her percussive, finger tapping guitar playing wizardry and unique voice.

After ice creams, cake and coffee break Andrea Kirwin delighted the

audience with her warm presence, retro soulful sound and a knack for story telling.

She was at times accompanied by Claire on the harp creating a rich and polished performance.

Festival of Small Halls is an annual event with a Spring and Summer Tour that brings musicians to rural and remote towns all over Queensland.

Ingredients For the Kebabs 500 grms of croc (body or tail) Cherry Tomatoes (for the end of the kebab) Button or small mushrooms 1 for each kebab Pineapple pieces (1 for each kebab) Capsicum or onion wedges (1 for each kebab)

Skewers 2 TBSPs of olive or vegetable oil for cooking For the Marinade 3 TBSPs of lime juice 1 tsp of ground coriander 1 tsp of ground cumin 1/2 tsp of ground turmeric 1TBSP of chopped fresh mint

Method

Cut Croc meat into cubes Mix ingredients for the marinade and cover the cubed meat.

Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours Cut onions, mushrooms, capsicums etc into similar sized wedges for the kebabs.

Soak skewers for at least 30 minutes in cold water (this prevents burning) Assembly Alternate pieces of marinated meat and vegetables along the wet skewer.

Finish the sharp end of the kebab with a cherry tomato .

Set aside the left over marinade for cooking.

Cooking Heat BBQ to a high heat and oil the grill or hot plate. Make sure the grill is well oiled.

Once heated add the kebabs Drizzle some of the left over marinade and the oil on the kebabs once they begin to sizzle. Turn after 2-3 mins and repeat the process.

Croc meat is ready when it is no longer translucent and has the consistency of chicken meat.

Alternatives to the veggies listed include; haloumi, feta, and eggplant.

Works very well served with Pasta Salad and Coleslaw!

Mulgowie wins top award Mulgowie Farming Company have won the top sustainability accolade at Woolworths’ Annual Supplier Awards.

The awards ceremony, held in Sydney last week, saw Mulgowie Farming Company announced as the Sustainable Supplier of the Year from a strong field of finalists and a diverse range of industries.

The Sustainable Supplier award was open to all Woolworths’ suppliers across every category from fresh produce, meat, seafood, dairy, eggs, health and beauty, pantry, frozen and more.

Chambers said“to be recognised ahead of thousands of Australian and multinational companies is a phenomenal achievement that they were very proud of.

“This is a massive win for our whole team and recognition of the great efforts the Mulgowie team go to while sustainably delivering consistent supply of quality, fresh and nutritious vegetables,” she said.

Woolworths were particularly impressed with Mulgowie’s environmental initiatives and success in: l Being the first vegetable

farmer in Australia to generate carbon credits to GHG ISO 14064 standard. Mulgowie capture 213kg of greenhouse gasses for every ton of vegetables produced. Mulgowie deliver carbon sequestration by controlled traffic farming, cover cropping and minimum tillage and are certifiably ‘net Carbon negative’ at the farm gate. l Removing 50tonnes of plastic in 2019 and 2020 from our supply chain by converting Woolworths Beanettes from trays to a bagged product and by adopting a shallower tray for our Sweet Corn, with

plans to remove 35MT of plastic out of circulation and eliminating 5.5 million paper labels in 2022, with more to come. l Adopting ‘no till’ farming practices as a pillar of our soil health strategy, where we prevent our soil from being compacted and grow cover crops to keep the soil alive year-round with living roots, boosting soil and vegetable nutrition while reducing fuel use.

In an extra nod to the company, Mulgowie were also awarded Woolworth’s Fruit and Veg Supplier of the Year.

A representative for Woolworths commented the company have shown a high level of commitment to customers and collaborative approach to managing through both short and long-term challenges.

“Their focus and drive towards highly sustainable farming practices complements their customer first view,” they said.

It has been a stellar end of 2021 for the Mulgowie farmers, who two weeks ago found out that they had been successful in winning a Feder-

al Government Modern Manufacturing Initiative grant.

Over 250 companies applied for a grant, but only seven companies were successful in obtaining a piece of the $33 million grant funding on offer.

Under the grant, Mulgowie won $5.1 million to invest in their business which the company will use to improve processing capability and capacity which will result in greater supply of Mulgowie Farming’s sustainably grown fresh nutritious vegetables for Australians and international consumers to enjoy.

Fire ant talk for hay industry The National Fire Ant Eradication Program are hosting a forum in Gatton to address concerns with compliance.

As The Independent reported in June, lack of communication on the changes to biosecurity zones left Clarendon hay producers in the dark.

In a previous interview Somerset councillor Sean Choat said the handling of farmers on Clarendon Road has been disgraceful and completely inadequate.

“The fire ant program told me they put out notifications on the internet and the local papers, well, I’m sorry that’s not good enough, they’ve got to be proactive,” Cr Choat said.

“As I said in the council chamber, they’ve got the details of every resident in the fire ant zones, it’s very easy to identify and drive to

the residents.”

Residents and business operators working with baled hay products are invited to learn more about the fire ant biosecurity zones.

National Fire Ant Erad-

ication Program General Manager Graeme Dudgeon said everyone in southeast Queensland had a role to play in the fight against fire ants.

“Anybody who works with hay needs to understand why

it’s important to manage the fire ant risk,” he said.

“We’re working alongside key industries, such as hay, to ensure everyone understands the steps they must take to stop fire ants from spreading

in the material.”

People working with baled materials inside of the fire ant biosecurity zones are required to follow set rules when producing and storing hay prior to movement from

their property.

“Hay Day attendees will be shown practical examples of what is required to be compliant — all of which can be used on their own properties in the days following,” Mr Dudgeon said.

“We want to educate and empower the community to do everything possible to stop fire ants from moving onto or from their property.”

The program is a nationally cost-shared program funded by all Australian state and territory governments, and the federal government.

November Car Sales down on last year

Car sales in Australia have dropped 15.3 per cent on November 2020 sales, with 80,639 new vehicles sold in November 2021.

“Demand across the sector remains strong with the drop in sales reflecting well recognised international supply chain issues,” FCAI Chief Executive Tony Weber said.

“This includes constraints around microprocessor supplies as well as the ongoing impact of the pandemic restricting factories.”

Queensland saw 16,001 vehicles sold which is a decline of 19.5 per cent on last years figures “Car makers are competing with many other sectors, such as white goods manufacturers, for microprocessors across the globe.

“Some new vehicles sold

definitely being felt by the industry.”

Toyota was the market leader in November recording 15,239 sales.

This was followed by Hyundai with 6,854 sales.

Third place went to Ford with 6,215 sales.

Mitsubishi sold 5,720 vehicles and Mazda came in fifth with 5,295 vehicles sold.

The Ford Ranger was the highest selling model with 4,429 sold.

The Toyota Hilux came in second with 4,228 sold.

Special Ordered HG Holden Ute You may know him as the Mayor of Somerset, but Graeme Lehmann is also a serious car guy.

As a young apprentice mechanic, he pedalled to work each day on his push bike.

“My vision was to save enough money to buy my dream car,” Graeme said.

That dream became reality when he ordered this 1971 full Monaro spec HG Holden Kingswood Ute. He bought it from Buhse’s Garage Laidley.

It was traveling in style from then on!

The Monaro spec ute came with the 253 V8 engine, 4 speed on the floor manual gearbox, power steering and even air-conditioning for comfort while touring around the countryside.

So many of these great original features are still going strong today.

Graeme has made a couple of modifications, one being the electric seats from a 1999 Statesman Caprice.

This one-owner ute, original colour Marlboro Red from factory, has stood the test of time.

“It only needed a touch up recently, in 2017,” Graeme said.

Graeme said he was unfortunately in a not-at-fault accident and was hit in the front end by a learner driver.

“Luckily, I found some original donor front guards and other parts to bring it back to how it looks today,” he said.

Graeme had it back in action within eight months.

Recently, Graeme won the ‘Winner Classic Ute’ at the

Graeme Lehmann’s prize Holden Kingswood ute.

ELDERS INDUSTRY UPDATE

A routine inspection should not be routine As a young uni student, I vividly remember the day my rental unit began having troubles with the toilet.

Thankfully, my yearly inspection was due, so it was the perfect opportunity to let my property manager see for herself.

I placed a polite explanatory note on the floor at my front entry (so she couldn’t miss it) but then came home to find the note sitting untouched.

It instantly told me that my rental hadn’t been inspected.

Toilet woes aside, this excited me because I took it as a sign the real estate company trusted me and felt that I didn’t need to be “checked up on” constantly.

I don’t think like that anymore.

As the owner of a real estate business (and as a landlord myself), I am horrified to think back to that day and realise that a property manager couldn’t be bothered to do their job.

Worse still, the property owner would have been told that everything was “perfect” with their rental investment and they would have been none the wiser.

That is appalling.

And it’s something that will never happen at Elders Real Estate Gatton because: a) We’ve got a proven structure of checks and balances to protect all parties involved. b) I know my property managers would never take shortcuts because they have a strong work ethic and a great relationship with our landlords and tenants.

“Having a lot of the kids involved in the Gatton Redbacks [Football Club] was handy, and while there are some similarities in the game,

there are some differences as well in term of the style of play and techniques,” he said.

“We were really impressed with the advancements the kids made in a two-month period.”

In the men’s league, six teams battled for the title.

“Solish, who were undefeated in the regular season, played against teams 4 and 6 as reward for finishing first,” Mr McLeod

“So they went through both preliminary games and got to the final.”

Teams 2, 3 and 5 played a round robin with team 5, We Got Nothing FC, upsetting their rivals to play Solish in the final.

Solish took out the win with a final score of 4-2.

“It was a really good game of futsal,” Mr McLeod said.

“Good skill sets.”

A great day was had by all the 140 persons who participated in their fund-raising event. A big thankyou to those club members who helped with the day.

On Sunday 28th November we had six players who enjoyed a game of triples. Phil Gregory, Ian Bradow and Dot McVeigh were too good on the day for John Greany, Len Smyth and Robert Griffin. Raffle went to Robert Griffin.

On Thursday 2nd December we had a pairs game between the girls and the boys. Colleen Heath and Linda Winkeler against Ian Bradow and Gerrit Winkeler with the boys just getting over the line in a fiercely fought contest.

Our next scheduled club meeting will be held on Sunday 12th of December. All members are encouraged to attend and put forward any suggestions they may have in respect to the running of our club after which our Club Christmas Break up will be held when we will enjoy a

game followed by afternoon tea. Members are asked to bring a plate (with something on it, to share). Dress Mufti. Everyone is welcome.

Lockyer Cricket Match Report B Grade: Ropehill v Helidon at Ropehill.

Helidon won toss and sent the home side in to bat.

A steady start was made by openers Gene Kok (29) and Jack Curtin (28, playing his first seniors match) but after their dismissal, it was left to inspirational skipper Phil Bauer (54) to give Ropehill a competitive total of 170.

Helidon started with a flurry of shots, but impressive bowling, especially by Jack Curtin (4/29) saw a steady fall of wickets, and Connor

Phillis (29) was top score.

Ropehill won by 30 runs, skipper Phil Bauer said that it was a great win, with all the juniors that made up the side.

Gatton Fordsdale batted first, and despite the efforts of Falak Patel (47) and H Patel (47), Forest Hill were able to bowl the visitors out in the 30th over for 176.

FUTSAL FINALS FIRED UP Australian Futsal Lockyer District held their grand final last Wednesday in Gatton and the sport has proven popular in its first season.

Coach Chris McLeod said children aged 6-15 participated in a range fun and skill-based activities before presentations of medals for all players.

“As we grow the competition the older children will have a 13-15 comps, and a 10-12,” he said.

“With the interest we’ve had, we’ll have bigger numbers next year, and they’ll start nominating as teams.”

While there was not a formalised competition, the first season focused on game skill.
