Karen, Gatton Esk Rd A tale of two letters A letter claiming to be from a woman in Italy expressing opposition to the Mount Glen Rock Adventure Park project in Esk was recently published in this newspaper. That same week a letter from a man in Germany with identical wording was published in the other newspaper serving Somerset. Very strange. In recent comments on the ‘Somerset Community Notice Board’ Facebook group, Murray Oke, who appears to be a spokesperson for the Care4Esk Facebook group formed to oppose the project, claims that the two letters are authentic.Inother words, he would have us believe that two people in different countries independently came up with identical text and coincidentally both decided to write to two local papers in a small local government area in Australia about a small mountain bike park in a small town calledEvenEsk.ifthe authors are genuine people as Murray claims, they were clearly working to a script that had been provided to them. Any teacher will tell you, when two students come up with identical text in their homework, someone, somewhere is cheating. When asked to prove their authenticity, Murray conveniently cited privacy concerns.Thisseems like an own goal on the part of the anti-Glen Rockers. Their history of spreading misinformation seriously undermines any credibility they might have. The phenomenon of NIMBYs opposing mountain bike parks under the guise of environmentalfabricatedconcerns is nothing new. Can Koalas and mountain biking co-exist? They sure can and have been for some time at the Daisy Hill Conservation Park in Brisbane.TheMount Glen Rock Adventure Park is a great project that has many potential economic, ecologiourContraryregion. to what the anti-Glen Rockers would have us believe, there is substantial support for the project in the community.

Fighting Fireweed IN REFERENCE to The Lockyer & Somerset Independent’s story ‘Fighting Fireweed’ from the July 27 issue:Dear land owners and tenants, do you have this paddock? Fireweed is very invasive and in time will take over the paddock not allowing grass to grow. It is dangerous to all grazing animals, including our precious wildlife. The most successful way to stop the spread is to remove the bush and the roots, so put some rubber gloves on, grab a recyclable plastic bag, and take an hour to go outside and remove this weed – you will get a lot done in an hour, then empty it in you waste bin, keeping the recycle bag for the next time. You may also need to check you roadside and remove it there too. Slashing and mowing the stop the spread, it increases the seeds spread for nextEveryyear.year that nothing is done, this weed multiplies 10-fold for the next year.

CONCERNS are brewing over an upcoming Water Ski Racing Queensland event to be held in Atkinsons Dam on September 11 with reports of barb wire and picket fences submerged in the water. Atkinsons Dam Holiday Park owners Wendy and Wayne Maher said farmers had placed picket fences and barb wire in the dam three years ago when water levels were low.“Just a while back, there was a massive, big boat and the owner was with his wife and kids… he had two kids on the tube and they hit barbed wire and the star pickets,” Mr Maher said.

Mr Maher promptly phoned a ranger who told him to ring the Seqwater hotline, later he received a call from Seqwater’s Dan“HeSedunary.phonedme up two days after and said the ranger had given me the wrong information, ‘there’s no barbed wire out there’,” he said. “And I said ‘there is, they hit it, I have the lady’s phone number’.” ago, and just two weeks after this phone call, a jet ski also hit some barbed wire.“I’ve told them about that barbed wire and they’re denying it, and I don’t want to see anyone get killed,” he said.

A PLANNED exhibition and performance at The Condensery scheduled for this Friday was pulled from the program late last week. Somerset Regional Council decided to remove the video work by Brisbane artist Karike Ashworth, featuring her alter ego ‘Brave Girl’.Mayor Graeme Lehmann said council always endeavours to make decisions in the best interest of the community.“While we acknowledge that the timing of this decision is unfavourable, the nature of the exhibition and content was not fully disclosed to elected members, members of the Condensery advisory committee and council’s executive leadership team,” he said. “The body of the work in question does not align with council’s core values and community expectations and a collective decision was made to remove the work from the art program.” In the work, Brave Girl runs along roadsides, through towns, and along the rail trail wearing a crocheted During the six-minute video, she stops to eat, sleep, and relieve herself under a tree. She sits on a brick wall next to a plaque reading ‘lest we forget’ at the beach and looks at a soldier’s memorial wall while covered with a Speaking to The Independent on September 1, Dr Ashworth said the decision to ‘censor’ the work was ‘shocking’.“It’sdevastating because it takes so much preparation... and then to cancel it the week before,” she said.

The proposed new Australian Animal Welfare Standards and Guidelines for Poultry, which have now been made public, covers a range of welfare requirements for chickens, ducks, pigeons, and emus. Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Murray Watt said the proposed standards would provide certainty for industry.

9Dorf Farms manager Bronwyn Neuendorf said phasing out battery cages was ‘well overdue’. “I think people are no longer saying that’s acceptable,” she said. But for pasture raised operations like 9Dorf, located at Lilydale, the same fees and regulations apply to family farms as they do to large scale industrial producers. “We’re limited in what we can do by numbers,” Mrs Neuendorf said. “For people like us who are doing the right thing by the animal and creating a healthy product, the government need to relax the laws… about how many birds we’re allowed to keep.”

Mrs Neuendorf said there was demand for boutique, ethical farming but no incentive for small operators to make it temperatureofintensitytochickens,stimulationducks,provisionguidelinesinfeeshoopstothosemouthputussheusbecausefor“There’sviable.noencouragementustodotherightthingtheywanttochargeanarmandalegtodoit,”said.“Iftheywantustodothistodoethicalfarming…theirmoneywheretheirisandstarttorelaxlawssowedon’thavejumpthroughallofthoseandpayallofthosetosetsomethingup.”Otherproposedchangesthenewstandardsandincludetheofwatertoallenvironmentalforbreedingandimprovementstheminimumlightandrequiredperiodsdarkness,ventilation,andparameters.

“It also proposes the phase out of conventional chicken cages, commonly known as battery cages, over the next 10 to 15 years.”

CHANGES are on the way for poultry producers. But for farmers who already abide by a higher animal welfare standard, government red tape can be prohibitive to expansion.

Stariha Auctions owner David Stariha said the market has improved for all varieties of cattle. “We’re coming out of winter and things are picking up right across the board,” he said. “There’s more money at the end, the export cattle market’s improved dramatically to what it was. “Improved prices for export and killed cattle has had a knock-on effect right through the market.” MLA senior market information analyst Ripley highlighted producers rebuilding attitudes. “Across large parts of the eastern seaboard, on average the 2022 spring bull sale season, clearance rates and numbers of bulls offered and sold have also been high.”

Over the past 12 months, the FSR has averaged 44% nationally which supports MLA’s current cattle projections for a 5.6% rise in national numbers in 2022 to 27.6m head, due to the high retention of females. Slaughter numbers have been revised down to 6.15m head in 2022, driven by processor capacity and supply chain issues. However, record carcase weights are forecast to offset this, meaning production is forecast to rise by 4.5% to 1.97m tonnes.

GEMINI This week’s Full Moon lights up your career zone and professional ambitions. But it may feel like one step forward and two steps back, squashes them. Plus, Mercury (your patron planet) turns retrograde from Saturday until deter you from following your dreams! Be inspired by birthday great, writer D. H. Lawrence: “I want to live my life so that my nights are not full of regrets.”

SAGITTARIUS Expect some domestic dramas this week, as the Full Moon stimulates your Sagittarian family zone. You could also face a tricky balancing act between growing responsibilities at work and constant commitments at home. Venus encourages you to approach challenges with a cooperative and consultative (and charming) approach. With Mercury switching into retrograde mode on Saturday, an important goal or dream needs to be revised and recalibrated.

WEEKLY

Courtesy of Venus, the Piscean Full Moon and Mercury turning retro, be careful you’re not viewing people through ridiculously rose-coloured glasses. Creative inspiration and intuitive insights are highlighted, but don’t get so carried away that you head into the realm of pure fantasy. When it comes to a major goal, are you and your partner on the same page? And – if you’re single and looking for love – can you differentiate a dream date from a disappointing dud?

Then Saturday’s Full Moon amps up your sensuality, spirituality and/or personality. Mercury also shifts into retrograde mode (until October 2), so make sure you’re communicating with extra clarity, passion and purpose.

MOORE STARS

AQUARIUS Aquarians can be real scatterbrains – all ideas and no action. But you have more chance of putting plans into practice, as Saturn transits through your sign until March 2023. Which is just as well because family, friends and colleagues are looking to you for less superthrough and pace yourself – especially on the weekend, when Mercury turns retrograde. Appointments and travel arrangements also need to be double-checked.

TAURUS peer-group zones, and Mercury turns retrograde in your job zone. So don’t waste precious time wondering what a close friend or work colleague is thinking … you’re probably way off the mark. A relationship (of the romantic or platonic variety) could also head off in an unexpected direction, but don’t worry too much, Taurus. A solid partnership will eventually emerge stronger and more resilient than before.

White Light Health & Wellbeing Expo—Fairways Tavern, 10am-3pm, many exhibitors, healers, psychics, crystals, cooks and CDs, much more, gold coin entry, 0419709661

Thu 15 LowoodSepSeniors—CWA Hall Lowood 9am-11.30am. 0447489875

SCORPIO Scorpios love to be in control, however – with Mercury stationing and turning retrograde – the week will work best if you wield power a velvet glove is smarter than scaring people away with your Plutonic intensity!) The Full ship zones. So you’re in the mood to party, entertain yourself and amuse others. But be careful that your dark sense of humour doesn’t slide into sarcasm.

Sun Sep 18 My Local Market Plainland am12pm, Porters Plainland Hotel, mylocalmarket.net.au Murphys Creek Chilli Carnival— 103pm, 16 Jessie Lane Murphys Creek. Fun, fiery family day out featuring parade.

CANCER Saturday’s shiny Full Moon activates your aspirations zone. So – despite ongoing pandemic problems and economic challenges – you still need to dream big dreams for the future. With ambitious, sweeping strokes! As writer (and birthday great) D. H. Lawrence reminds us: “Life is ours to be spent, not to be saved.” But tread carefully with a fragile family member, as Mercury turns retrograde in your domestic zone and sends some surprises your way.

Sat Sep 24 Monster Garage Sale— Minden Baptist Church 6am-1pm. Cakes, clothes, tools, furniture, etc.

Sat Oct Mulgowie1 Fresh Farmers Market7am - 11am, Mulgowie Hall Recreation Grounds, over 50 stalls, hot food, plants, vegetables, live music and lots more. 0417 799 679 Marburg Dance—7pm, Marburg Show Hall, Let s Dance Sun Oct 2 My Local Market Walloon—6am11am, Walloon State School, mylocalmarket.net.au Gatton Village Markets—8am-12pm, Lake Apex, see FB or ph 0492831969

With Neptune and the Full Moon highlighting your humanitarian side, slip into Good Samaritan mode as you reconnect with others and help those around you. An unresolved matter from the past could also resurface and demand to be addressed. And Mercury starts reversing through your relationship zone on Saturday. So avoid rushing around with your usual impetuosity! If you want to avoid misunderstandings, then communicate clearly and listen patiently.

LIBRA With Venus moving into your subconscious mind zone – and Mercury turning retrograde in your sign – don’t take things too literally. Communicate carefully and check all travel arrangements diligently. You’ll have to read between the lines if you want to know what’s really going on. If you blindly follow the advice of a loved one or work colleague, then you trouble. So use your discretion and trust your instincts.

THERE WAS a lot of excitement at Cahill Park Sports Complex on Sunday September 4 for the Toowoomba week 2. brilliantly with the Under 14 and the Women’s team beating Newtown 26 to 4. Unfortunately the Reserve Grade could not keep up the streak, losing to Wattles 20 to Families gathered and celebrated Fathers Day by showing some love for the Hawks after they won Club Champions, even without the women’s teams undefeated streak being counted in the ruling.Hawks president Matt McDermott said it was a big tory we’ve won since we’ve been with Toowoomba, so almost 40 years,” he said. He was grateful for such a huge crowd on the day. “It means a lot for the town and it means a lot for the teams, and it’s probably only going to grow,” Mr McDermott said.
