I WANT TO commend Somerset Regional Council on their new tourism guide, website, and promotional video (p4).

I went to the launch event last week, met some lovely people who live and breathe their work, and am quite impressed with the campaign to sell Somerset.

The initiatives to elevate

Somerset as a tourism destination are to be commended.

I’m not much of an outdoorsy person myself, but seeing the presentation made me want to pull on some hiking boots and get out there.

I think we too often head to the beach for our holidays.

But have you looked at what’s available in your own

region, or the region next door?

What a wonderful part of the world we live in.

It’s a beautiful place and it’s our own backyard.

Let’s be tourists in our own backyard and show our neighbours some love.

Rural Crime Forum ON 17TH of March 2022, MOCS (Rural) Forest Hill hosted a Rural Crime Forum at Esk, members of the community who attended were provided with advice and strategies to assist police to prevent, disrupt, respond to and investigate rural crime in their area. Common complaints from attendees included trespassing and illegal hunting on their properties and stock stealing offences. MOCS (Rural) investigators provided advice in relation to farm security measures, including new camera and drone technology, and reporting offences and information effectively to police. Acting Sergeant Adrian Solah from Esk Police Station and Ipswich District Volunteers In Policing also attended and provided crime prevention advice and information packages. We hope that the event will strengthen the relationships between the community of Esk, QPWS, SEQWater and the Queensland Police Service to reduce rural crime.

GOT TO love Eric von Nida’s ‘Letter to the Editor’ in paper last week, replying to my letter the previous week.

He belligerently demands to know, “Is Mr Heymanns (sic) an Esk resident?”

It seems Eric thinks that the only people entitled to an opinion about the Mount Glen Rock Recreation Park are Esk residents.

It’s a Somerset Regional Council project on land owned by them. Last time I looked, Somerset Regional Council is the council for the whole of Somerset, not just Esk residents.

We are all entitled to an opinion about the project.

Eric criticizes Council for not consulting with local residents. Well, blow me down, all that’s happening at the present time is a consultation, so the answer to Eric’s

question is yes, Somerset Council does genuinely want community feedback. No work has been commenced on the project.

Eric quite legitimately claims that the online survey about the project can be completed multiple time. How does Eric know the survey can be completed multiple times? Did he try it?

All online surveys can be completed multiple times by the truly devious, but it’s usually easy to spot the multiple entries in the back end and discard them.

I get it, I really do. Some local residents fear the Mount Glen Esk recreation project proposed by Somerset Regional Council will affect their idyllic lifestyle in as many ways as they can dream up.

1RLVH WUDIÀF YLVXDO LPSDFW H[FHVVLYH demands on ambulance services, erosion, hordes of male mountain bikers not spending any money (goodness knows where that came from) are all important considerations that have been raised by those opposed to the project, but addressing those issues is what the consultation is all about.

The anonymous ‘Esk Residents’ seem to believe they represent a majority view, but there are plenty of Esk residents who have more positive views.

Personally. I think Esk is a great little town with some great amenities all within walking or cycling distance – grocery shops, pharmacy, medical services, cafes, rail trail and the beautiful backdrop of Mt Glen Rock.

The Mount Glen Rock recreation park is a great project that will breathe new life into the town and into the region.

“If you are camping on the beach or in a remote area, make sure to take note of details like beach access numbers and have the information on hand at all times.”

Mr Leach encouraged anyone travelling in Queensland to download the free Emergency+ app, which provides critical location details using GPS functionality.

Shows in jeopardy under mandates

SHOW societies have lent their signatures to a parliamentary petition to have COVID-19 vaccination mandates lifted and allow struggling shows to thrive.

Queensland Chamber of Agricultural Societies Inc general manager Trevor Beckingham said agricultural shows fell under the mandate which required vaccination or valid exemption, despite the mandate not applying WR other events at showgrounds.

“All we want the government to do is allow us to be like every other event you can have on a showground that doesn’t require vaccination,” he said.

“We are at risk of losing nearly our whole show circuit if the mandate isn’t changed.”

“You’ve got to look at the people who bring in their entries for the sections and the people who come in to compete,” she said.

“I’m feeling very hopeful about it because as well as Trevor, we’ve also got Tanya Milligan,” she said.

“Maybe with her and Trevor really pushing, we may be lucky.”

Cut in fuel excise saves cents at the pump but is not sustainable THE FEDERAL Government has halved the fuel excise in an effort to lessen the strain on motorists, but will it be enough?

The initiative was announced as part of the Federal Budget unveiling last

week and will be in effect until September 28.

Nolans Interstate Transport director Darren Nolan said the support from the government will help, but if prices continue to climb ‘it’s not going to do much.’

“They really do need to look at where we’re getting sustainable pricing from long term,” Mr Nolan said.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) said the full excise has already been paid on existing stocks of

ACCC Chair Gina Cass-Gottlieb said their petrol team will focus on price monitoring to determine how retailers are passing through the excise reduction to consumers.

Developed by Brisbane Economic Development Agency (BEDA), the program guides tourism industry operators in delivering exceptional results to ultimately achieve Tourism and Events Queensland’s ‘Best of Queensland’ status.

A group of Facebook users claim thousands of dollars have been taken from them after promises made

by Mr Raymond Peterson.

Dodgy worker ripping off Facebook users

BY JACOB HAYDEN A FACEBOOK group of more than 60 Laidley and Gatton residents have raised complaints against Raymond Peterson, who advertised work and item sales through the website.

Mr Peterson is the owner of R & C Cabinets and True Blue Maintenance and Mowing, both of which have been removed online.

Several people, including Gloria Jen and the parents of Monique Elizabeth, paid Mr Peterson money for a ride-on mower advertised on Facebook Marketplace before being told it was no longer for sale.

Ms Elizabeth said Mr Peterson asked her mother to transfer $400, which she did.

“He said he wasn’t selling it anymore, and then he refused to transfer it back,” Ms Elizabeth said.

Mrs Jen said she paid $400 on Friday March 18 but was told her transfer did not clear despite her bank receipt. ³5D\ ¿QDOO\ DQVZHUHG P\ WH[W on Monday evening stating that the mower was now not running,” Mrs Jen said.

Amy Drysdale said she contacted Mr Peterson for a job after her partner’s house was damaged from a storm which he quoted for $600

“I assumed that he wanted the money upfront so he could get the supplies,” she said.

“When I asked for my money back he would have said ‘I’ve already bought the supplies’ but he had no intention of doing this job whatsoever.”

Laidley Police Station Senior Sergeant Daniel Curtin is aware of the complaints made against Mr Peterson and advises residents to practice caution when reaching civil agreements.

“Be more cautious, deal with reputable tradespeople who you can get proper references from,” Mr Curtin said.

Mr Peterson declined The Independent’s request for comment.

Short of 100 years, Kilcoy Show cancelled ON TUESDAY March 22 the Kilcoy P.A. & I Society Management Committee decided the 100th Kilcoy Show was to be cancelled.

Society secretary Rebecca McEwan explained the damage to the showgrounds after the ÁRRGV DQG WKH FRVW RI RSHUDWLQJ under the current Queensland health mandates meant the show would not go ahead.

“The feedback from members indicated that they would like their 100th show accessible to all members of the community,” Ms McEwan said in a statement.

Drainage costing local businesses

“There’s not enough drainage there to get the water away and it simply can’t handle it.”

Gatton Caravan Park manager Kevin Hardingham said KH KDV VHHQ WZR ÀRRGV LQ months.

Mr Hardingham said the culverts under the railway back up with water from golf course.

“People have moved out of the park because of it, we’ve had to relocate some of the people staying in their own vans,” Mr Hardingham said.

“My indication was that

nothing’s going to get done until they put the Inland Rail through… that could be years from now.”

Lockyer Valley Regional Council infrastructure portfolio councillor Janice Holstein said council is aware of the long-standing drainage issues in these locations.

“The proposed Inland Rail route will inevitably have a considerable impact on any proposed works in these locations,” she said.

“Council continues to seek funding support to improve stormwater drainage infrastructure across the region.”

‘Step back in time’ for the festival

COME CELEBRATE the region’s history on Saturday April 9 at the Lockyer Valley Heritage Festival.

Laidley Pioneer Village will be hosting various activities, NLFNLQJ R൵ ZLWK WKH %LJ %UHNky and award-winning bush poet Marco Gliori joining at 10am.

The village will have a range of displays including small engines, woodworking, and the blacksmith shop.

Laidley District Historical Society president Carl Foster said there is something for everybody.

“Step back in time and come and have a look at history,” Mr Foster said.

Laidley’s Das Neumann Haus Museum will have free entry with markets, German food, displays, activities, and musical entertainment.

Das Neumann Haus treasurer Marion Davis said visitors can interact with recordings to learn about the house’s rich

history.

“People can come in and push buttons in the house and listen to the recordings which gives you the history of the house,” Ms Davis said.

Gatton and District Historical Village will also participate this year with a sausage sizzle and the opportunity for visitors to help piece together Gatton’s history.

Gatton and District Historical Society interim president Gail Chalker said the society is keen on family history.

“We have lots of very old photos from the very beginning of the Gatton settlement,” Mrs Chalker said.

Lockyer Valley Regional Council Mayor Tanya Milligan said the Heritage Festival was a highlight on the tourism calendar.

“The Lockyer Valley +HULWDJH )HVWLYDO LV D ¿WWLQJ celebration of the region’s heritage and there really is so much to both see and do, regardless of your age,” Cr Milligan said.

Coffee by Josh taking off on social media JOSH POOLE did not let his disability stop him from starting his own business four years ago.

With the help of his family, Coffee by Josh has become a popular hideaway in Haigslea.

“I’ve got a disability that means I can’t talk to people really well,” Josh said.

“I like making coffees, and I’m pretty good at it.”

Josh said it is easier to talk to people at his café.

“I don’t feel too nervous around here,” Josh said.

Now Josh is focussing on building a social media presence for Coffee by Josh.

Josh’s mother Katrina Poole said he is constantly inviting people to visit.

“To get a job is very hard for someone with a disability,

so he decided to do his own thing,” Mrs Poole said.

“He had some money saved so he bought the coffee van and we went from there.

“It’s a safe space for people to come, to get to know him.

“We’re trying to expose disability as something that’s not scary.”

Farewell to pharmacy’s familiar face

BY JACOB HAYDEN AFTER 24 years of work at Gatton Plaza Discount Drug Store and 40 total years as a pharmacy assistant, Patricia ‘Pat’ Goodchild celebrated her retirement on April 1 surrounded by her adoring customers and colleagues.

Pat said the changes in pharmacy over the years KDYH OHIW KHU IHHOLQJ XQFRQ¿dent in her work.

“There’s big changes in pharmacy now, and I’m not computer savvy,” Pat said.

“But I’m one of the lucky ones, because I’ve loved it.”

Jeanette Exelby has known Pat for 45 years and said she is a beautiful, caring person.

“No matter where you go Pat’s name is mentioned, everyone says the same thing: ‘she’s always been so helpful, kind and supportive’,” Ms Exelby said.

Customer Kathy Gibson said she always puts a smile on people’s faces.

“I don’t know who’s going to make me smile now,” Ms Gibson said.

Establishing cemetery a job for life

BY GRACE CRICHTON THE GATTON DISTRICT HISTORICAL SOCIETY IN THE Gatton District Historical Society archives was a dusty old exercise book.

Its seemingly unappealing cover hid an original record of Gatton history.

It is the minute book of the Gatton Cemetery, September 8, 1870 to March 23, 1929.

Gatton District Historical Society member Gail Chalker VDLG WKH ¿UVW PHHWLQJ ZDV WR establish a new cemetery for Gatton.

“Up until then, the 1870s, there was a little tiny cemetery at the bottom of Riddell Street where Gatton was originally,” Mrs Chalker said.

“There are still a few headstones there, but that was boggy and they needed somewhere separate.”

7KH ¿UVW SDJH UHFRUGV WKH men who were appointed trustees.

J. Victor Carpendale was appointed secretary, Michael O’Donahue, William Johnson, Joseph Lowe, and Robert Bell were the initial trustees.

In April 1875, Mr StubEHUV¿HOG DQG 0U +RRSHU were invited as trustees to the board.

It was a position for life.

“The only way people got R൵ WKH ERDUG ZDV WR GLH ´ Mrs Chalker said.

The people elected to the board were literate men of good standing in the community.

“Most of them were either retail, solicitors, that kind of thing,” Mrs Chalker said.

The trustee board were compelled to be guided by the ‘Cemetery Act of 1865,

an act to establish cemeteries in the colony of Queensland.’

“And they stuck to that really, really well,” Mrs Chalker said.

“They quibbled over whether they would have a ¿YH IRRW SDWK RU D IRXU IRRW path.”

The cemetery was divided

into four sections: Church of England, Roman Catholic, Presbyterian, and Wesleyan or Primitive Methodist United.

“If a Catholic person died, the priest would consecrate the ground and they could be buried there,” Mrs Chalker said.

“Whatever other denominations, they could be buried there.”

The board decided on the scale of charges, ranging from 15 shillings for a single grave, unselected, eight feet by four feet, up to four SRXQGV ¿YH VKLOOLQJV IRU D family grave or vault eight

feet by 12 feet.

Mrs Chalker said the graves were dug and people buried in the Christian fashion.

“Christian cemeteries have got the face of the person facing east,” Mrs Chalker said.

“Now that there are Muslims buried up there and other denominations, they can change that to suit their persuasions.” persuasions.

Tickets are on sale for a day of horse racing, fashion, food and live entertainment by Billy Bridge until 7pm.

Turf Club president Terry Kirkwood said the Laidley

Cup is provincial racing ‘at its best’.

“It’s a good day of racing, always is,” Mr Kirkwood said.

“It’s not a bad time of the year to get out and about

while it’s cooler.”

Non-powered camping will be free but guests need to book ahead by contacting the club.

“In case people come from

afar and want to have a couple drinks, they can stay the night,” Mr Kirkwood said.

Guests are required to be vaccinated again COVID-19 in accordance with State Gov-

ernment mandates.

The event is held at Gatton Racecourse, Spencer Street from 11am to 10pm April 16.

Council hosts community information night on mountain track plan SOMERSET residents can learn more on the proposed development for Mount Glen Rock on April 13.

The community information session, previously scheduled for March 10, will be at Somerset Civic Centre, Esk from 6pm.

A Somerset Regional Council spokesperson said the draft master plan, the ‘Have Your Say’ survey and the community information evening are all intended to provide the community with opportunities to ask questions and to become informed.

Thousands raised for Esk community ESK SHOPPERS have seen thousands of dollars given back to the community.

Since moving into their new premises in Peters St in January, Esk Community Op-Shop have raised enough money to give $1000 to ten local schools, and a host of community groups.

Esk Community Op-Shop president Jon Cunningham said all the

money made from sales at the op shop goes back into the Esk and Somerset community.

In addition to the schools, they have given $1000 each to Alara and the CWA, and $1500 to the Esk Garden Club to sponsor the upcoming garden fair.

“This is money we’ve raised since being in the new premises,” Mr Cunningham said.

Yowie returns from walkabout AN ICONIC Kilcoy statue went missing recently.

Residents and visitors noticed the obvious gap in the Kilcoy landscape, many speculating that the iconic Yowie had gone walkabout.

It was located not far away, a victim of vandalism.

Mayor Graeme Lehmann said that the yowie’s removal from its plinth was disap-

pointing.

“It’s unfortunate that vandalism has played a part in this incident, with our famous yowie pulled from its stand and dumped in Fred Greensill Lake, just behind the statue’s usual location,” he said.

“The statue has been damaged in the process and we have made arrangements for repairs to be made before

we return him to his rightful place in the park, with a stronger means of attachment to stop him from wandering again.”

The yowie has stood in Kilcoy’s Yowie Park since the 1980s, but reported sightings date back to the 1800s.

There are plans to reinstate the yowie with a more secure ¿[WXUH WR WKH SOLQWK

Live performance for opening night CORN ON the cob takes an artistic angle at the opening of The Condensery’s next exhibition.

Brisbane-based artist Elizabeth Willing will recreate her performance, Kernel on the opening night Slow Churn on Friday.

Kernel asks audience members to dig, meld, gouge and slather butter from a 30kg block onto freshly boiled corn cobs for their own consumption.

The butter left over at the end of the night is then moulded and cast with silicone into an enduring sculpture shown as part of the exhibition.

4 small sweet potatoes, washed • 2 teaspoons extra virgin olive oil + extra for drizzling 1 onion, diced • 1 garlic clove, crushed • 1 teaspoon paprika • 1 teaspoon ground cumin • ½ teaspoon ground coriander seeds 1 400g can black beans, rinsed and drained • 1 cup cheddar cheese, reduced fat, grated

To serve: 1 avocado, deseeded • Juice of half a lime • Freshly ground pepper • Sour cream, reduced fat • Coriander leaves, roughly chopped Method PREHEAT oven to 200°C. PRICK the surface of the sweet potatoes with a fork then drizzle each with olive oil and wrap individually in foil.

Place on a baking tray. ROAST for 30 minutes or until soft and a knife passes through with no resistance. SLICE each potato in half lengthways and mash the insides to soften with a fork. HEAT frying pan on medium heat then add oil once hot.

Fry the onion, garlic and spices until soft, about 5 minutes. ADD the black beans and heat through. TOP each potato with bean mixture and a sprinkle of cheese. MAKE guacamole by mashing the avocado in a small bowl and mixing through the lime juice and some ground pepper. SERVE the sweet potatoes with a dollop of guacamole and sour cream and sprinkle with coriander.

Alternative: Prick the surface of the sweet potatoes with a fork and wrap each one in a damp paper towel. Microwave each potato individually on high for 6 minutes, or until soft and a knife passes through with no resistance.

LDHS ready up for next comp

BY JACOB HAYDEN LOCKYER District High School hosted St Mary’s College Ipswich for the under 13s, 15s and 16s rugby teams on Friday.

LDHS program organiser Matthew Schulze said there were fewer schools involved this year due to &29,' RXWEUHDNV DPRQJVW VWD൵ “It was a bit disappointing but we just really wanted to make the day go ahead,” Mr Schulze said.

“We wanted to try and give our students an opportunity to get some footy under their belt before we play in the Darling Downs competition in term two.

“We’re taking our league very seriously and trying to produce some really good teams this year.”

Mr Schulze mentioned some stand-out players from LDHS on the day: U16s Robbie Jones, Kade Martin and Brody Gimm, U15s Kalam Potter, and U13s Willem Fedrick and Harry Armitage.

Over 40 boys played for the Gatton high school on the day.

“We’re taking our league very seriously and trying to produce some really good teams this year,” Mr Schulze said.

BOWLS TOOGOOLAWAH BOWLS CLUB Sunday 27th March, Today we were very lucky to be able to host the Brothers Social Bowls Club to our club. With lots of enthusiasm from all participants a great day was had by all. Our ladies in the kitchen as always did us proud and our players gave plenty of encouragement to all.

We were very happy to receive a donation for the repairs to our drainage system on the green which was overwhelmed by the torrential rain our region received. Winners on the day were all that participated. Our visitors were a joy to host and we look forward to their next visit.

Oakey had plenty of energy and enthusiasm and settled into the grind after half time. Jaz Namana and Sione Lopamaua were there, especially Namana who looked very comfortable at half back.
