Councillors visit Esk IGA opening day

BY JACOB HAYDEN AFTER 15 months of construction and four years of planning, the Esk IGA opened to customers on Wednesday $SULO PDUNLQJ D VLJQL¿cant milestone in the town’s

growth.

Following their ordinary meeting on the same day, Somerset Regional Councillors crossed the street from the OLEUDU\ WR VD\ KHOOR WR WKH VWD൵ and managers of the new store.

Store manager Tania Lukritz

welcomed the councillors and toured them around the brandnew building.

“It’s my baby and we’ve worked on it now for a long time,” Mrs Lukritz said. ³7KH VWD൵ DUH JUHDW ´ Esk resident Pam said the

“It’s becoming one of the premium swap meets in South East Queensland.”

The value of the Valley’s veggies

BY JACOB HAYDEN GROWERS and merchants across the Valley had to navigate a turbulent vegetable market between 2019 and 2021 thanks to COVID-19.

Hort Innovation’s Australian Horticulture Statistics Handbook 2020/2021 details the highs and lows of the market and paints a picture for the country’s best and worst performing vegetables through the period.

For example, Australia

produced 24% fewer cabbages per person while the production value dropped a whopping 40% last year.

Carrots on the other hand have performed well with only a 2% increase in production but a 15% increase in value.

This is unique compared to many crops where the volume produced increased but the overall farm-gate value decreased between 2020 and 2021.

sale produce merchant Luke Pomerenke said there was an over-supply in vegetables across the board in Australia.

“At one stage we were VHOI VX൶FLHQW EHWZHHQ 2020 and 2021 because hospitality, cruise ships and tourism were all closed,” Mr Pomerenke said.

“The market system is still the same as it was 50 and 100 years ago, supply and demand, but there was no demand for our produce and therefore the prices were

cheap.

“2020 and 2021 were a ZULWH R൵ EXW WKLQJV DUH JHWting back to normal now.”

Potatoes were a great example of COVID-19 lockdown’s impacts on the market after a 5% drop in production value in 2020, and a 13% rise in value the following year as restaurants re-opened.

“The potato market is better this year compared to last year because hospitality has reopened, you’re seeing

more demand for things and export is quite strong,” Mr Pomerenke said.

“I tell my growers, do what you normally do and stick to your routine… don’t try and grow to a market.”

Boko’s Fruit Mart owner Russell Bachmann said his Gatton store gained customers during the pandemic because of his home-delivery service, however he lost some business because the local pubs and clubs he supplied were closed.

POLICE are investigating a serious single vehicle crash involving a motorbike at Riverview on Sunday May 1.

Preliminary information suggests the motorcycle was travelling down the Warrego Highway off ramp onto the Ipswich Motorway towards Brisbane, when it struck a guardrail before crashing around 7.35am.

The rider, a 23-year-old man from Toowoomba, was transported to Princess Alexandra Hospital.

The Forensic Crash unit is appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the crash or have dashcam vision of the motorbike, a maroon/red Suzuki GSX750 Queensland registration 767LV, and a gold Mazda 3 travelling with the bike prior to the incident, to come forward.

“Unused or unwanted chemicals just lying about are both an environmental and public health risk and

it is vital we dispose of ÁRRG LPSDFWHG FKHPLFDOV in the right manner, and this program allows us to do that.”

One of the last Lockyer WWII vets

BY JACOB HAYDEN ONE OF THE last surviving World War II veterans from the Lockyer Valley, Sylvia Eva Randall née Flint, spent the last thirty years of her life living in Lilydale and giving back to the community.

Four months older than the Queen, Eva – as she like to be called – was born Dec 1, 1925 to Gladstone and Sylveria Flint.

At 18 Eva witnessed the Cowra prison breakout, the largest prison escape of WWII. She and her sister were resting on their front veranda when they saw Australian soldiers catching Japanese soldiers hiding near the Flint household.

Eva’s oldest son Rob Randall said she enlisted shortly after and joined the Women’s Auxilary Australian Air Force.

“She felt that she should do what she could do to help,” Rob said.

Eva performed her duties as a store clerk, however Rob and Andrew, her second son, were unsure exactly what this involved. ³7KH HQOLVWPHQW R൶FHU VDLG that she was helping out by releasing a man to serve at the front,” Rob said.

Eva took the role very seriously and continued to serve until the end of the war, while she met her husband to be.

Eva married Rex Randall on

August 3, 1946 in Cowra and they stayed together until his passing in 1990.

Andrew said Eva’s faith in God, commitment to doing the right thing and her service to the church and community impressed on him as a son.

“She worked for 30 years with Endeavour Foundation as a supervisor in shelter workshops,” Andrew said.

She was heavily involved with the Fred Hollows Foundation, 563&$ DQG 3DWK¿QGHUV At 55 Eva completed a Diploma in Mental Retardation (now known as Mental Health).

When Rex passed, Eva moved to Lilydale with Rob and she lived there happily for the rest of her life.

Eva passed away October 10, 2021 and is succeeded by her two sons, nine grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

SUNDAY’S drizzle could not dampen the spirits of those who came out to the Clydesale and Heavy Horse Field Day. The main parade on May 1 featured the Driven Concourse d’Elegance, showing the strength and prowess of the heavy horses.

There were a record number of 14 horse-drawn

vehicles from various eras and styles.

The days events included obstacle courses, fancy dress, and heavy horse show jumping.

On May 7 Marburg will welcome everyone for a day of fun.

Marburg Show Society treasurer Sue Kunde said

there was plenty of entertainment for the children with dairy goat milking, a dinosaur show, Geckoes Wildlife, hula-hoop circus workshops and a working dog and duck

show.

“The dog directs the ducks WKURXJK GL൵HUHQW REVWDFOHV and then they go back into their trailer,” Ms Kunde said.

“Then we’ve got the

Crackup Sisters, they tell jokes and then do a whipcrack competition towards the end of the day.”

Other events include lawn mower racing, the Freestyle

Kings show, utes circle work and barrel racing.

Hallelujah! Let’s go to the Show!

BY GRACE CRICHTON MARBURG Show Society was always optimistic this year’s show could go ahead.

With COVID restrictions easing, particularly lifting mandates only permitting vaccinated people to attend ag shows, this year’s Marburg Show will be an event open to everyone.

Marburg Show Society YLFH SUHVLGHQW %DUE )URKOR൵ said it was scary planning the show only a month ago.

“It was very scary about a month ago because our planning was three-quarters organised and we were waiting to see if the mandate would be lifted,” she said.

“It did put a lot of pressure on the show and there was always that question: should we go ahead, should we cancel?”

Lifting the vaccination mandates was welcome news for the committee.

“It was like hallelujah, let’s go!”

Families are excited to get back to the Marburg Show this year, with many attractions like Geckoes Wildlife returning.

0UV )URKOR൵ VDLG SHRSOH were excited to go to the show and she encouraged the kids who came into her shop, Barb’s Kitchen, to enter the Lego section.

“It gets them interested,” she said.

“We’ve got to encourage the young ones to take part.”

As the chief steward of the giant pumpkins, and steward

LQ KRUWLFXOWXUH 0UV )URKOR൵ said the wet weather impacted some entrants.

“We would normally have some entrants from New South Wales but because of

all of the wet early this year all the pumpkins have gone rotten, so the sizes will be down,” she said.

“But then in the horticulture, a lot of the plants have

With a ‘jam-packed’ program and a host of night entertainment, the Marburg Show promises to be a great day out.

WINNERS were grinners at the second annual Lockyer Valley Billy Cart Derby on Sunday May 1.

The competition at Lake Apex Gatton attracted 120 entrants, battling in time trials for first, second, and third in seven categories.

Thanks to Optus, PTV Channel O, and Hawkeye Access, the races were

filmed and live streamed online, plus broadcast to the big screen at the field.

A live action replay was called for more than once to determine who was first over the line.

Event organiser Alan Willson said the Billy Cart Assocation would return in October for a family fun day and the Derby would return in 2023 on the first weekend in May.

“I’ll get to train against the best of the best and hopefully qualify for competitions like the Commonwealth Games and maybe the Olympics in a few years,” Reynolds said. ³8VXDOO\ WKLV LV RXU R൵ VHDVRQ but because I’m competing in August we’re going to keep going so there’s no breaks for me, just an extended season.”

On top of that, Reynolds studies physiotherapy at Australian Catholic University and trains at the Queensland Sport Athletic Centre.

Reynolds attended Hatton Vale State School and Faith Lutheran College and said she enjoyed representing her schools in competitions before graduating in 2020.

“I’ve got to thank my support people: my coaches, parents, friends and family,” Reynolds said.

KENSINGTON Grove’s very own champion athlete will be representing Australia at the Under 20 World Athletics Championships in Cali, Columbia in August.

Hayley Reynolds has been training since she was 11 years old and in March she received a bronze medal at the National Championships for the U20 100 metres in Sydney.

She said she was a little nervous about representing Australia, but mostly excited.

“It’s something that’s always been a goal for me,” Reynolds said.

“I’ve been working really hard the last few years to wear the green and gold. ³,W ZLOO EH WKH ¿UVW WLPH ,¶YH OHIW Australia and travelled internationally so that’s exciting.”

Reynolds has also been invited to be part of the senior development
