Any time there is government money to our region it is a good thing.

But in this case, channelling funds to the Water Deal in the Lockyer and %ULVEDQH 9DOOH\ +LJKZD\ upgrade in the Somerset is GHÀQLWHO\ PRQH\ ZHOO VSHQW

, DP DOZD\V F\QLFDO RI politicians, especially in an election year, but in this case all levels of government do deserve a pat on the back.

Regional areas are so often forgotten in the big DQQRXQFHPHQWV ZLWK PRQH\ WRR RIWHQ ÁRZLQJ WR capital cities and coastal areas.

In this case the important projects in our region have been funded.

We can only hope that DV ZH PRYH WRZDUGV and the South East Olympics that this isn’t all of the PRQH\ WKDW ZH VHH FRPLQJ into the region.

South East Queensland Council of Mayors announced the SEQ City Deal with the Federal and State Government on Monday March 21.

Big funding wins for the Lockyer Valley and Somerset

A $1.8 BILLION funding announcement on Monday March 21 intends to improve liveability in southeast Queensland.

The SEQ City Deal is a 20-year partnership between the federal and state governments and the 11 Councils which make up the Council of Mayors (SEQ).

The 11 councils will have access to more than $400

million in regional funding pools including: z $105 million to improve waste infrastructure for the Waste Management Plan. z $40 million for the resilient rivers initiative. z $5 million for infrastructure and land planning to keep pace with population growth. z $2.1 million to improve transport and freight route

planning.

Lockyer Valley Regional Council Mayor Tanya Milligan and Somerset Regional Council Mayor Graeme Lehmann said the deal investment highlighted the important role the Lockyer Valley, Somerset and the south-east would play in the future prosperity of Queensland in Australia.

Water security was a big

win for the Lockyer Valley with $13.3 million going towards long-term planning and enhancing supply and H൶FLHQF\ “First as Deputy Mayor and now as a Mayor, I am proud to say I have been involved in the City Deals process since 2013,” Cr Milligan said.

The Somerset region also VHFXUHG VLJQL¿FDQW IXQG-

ing for the Brisbane Valley Highway.

“The Brisbane Valley Highway is a key regional freight route so we welcome the deal’s $40.5 million investment in targeted safety upgrades,” Cr Lehmann said.

Lockyer will receive $2.6 million and Somerset will receive $1.66 million for investment into community infrastructure.

Ipswich’s share in SEQ City Deal IPSWICH City Council has secured a $10 million commitment for the IpsZLFK WR 6SULQJÀHOG &HQWUDO Public Transport Corridor (I2S) as part of the SEQ City Deal.

The I2S commitment is one of several funding boosts announced for Ipswich as part of the $1.8 billion project, including $28 million in local investment and access to $400 million in regional funding pools.

Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding said it ‘felt great’ to make a commitment to ‘our highest priority project’.

“A tripartite commitment of $10 million… will fund both the Options Analysis and Detailed Business Case to move this project to shovel-ready status,” Cr Harding said.

“The objective of the SEQ City Deal is to have three levels of government working in unity to supercharge our economy.”

The deal also allocates more than $12 million for Ipswich City Council as part of the SEQ Liveability Fund.

“While it has been a long time in the making, the next 20 years of investment in Ipswich will make it worth the wait.”

THERE is still time to apply for funding to carry out tree planting projects to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee.

Federal Member for Wright Scott Buchholz said the Australian Government was providing grant funding to plant trees in honour of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, and her 70 years of service to Australia and the Commonwealth.

“Local schools and community groups, if they have not already done VR FDQ VWLOO FRQWDFW P\ RIÀFH WR GLVFXVV potential projects for nomination for funding,” Mr Buchholz said.

“In Wright a maximum of 10 projects will be funded, ranging from $2500 to $20,000.”

The program is one of a range of national and community events planned to celebrate The Queen’s Jubilee year.

The closing date for applications is April 4.

Laidley identity farewelled

FAMILY and friends gathered together on Thursday March 24 to say farewell to their father, grandfather, great grandfather and good mate, Norm Rampton.

Norm’s son Bruce said his father, one of seven children, was born in Maryborough on January 14 1933.

He started work with Queensland Rail at age 14; progressing to assistant station master and station master, serving at numerous towns throughout the state.

Norm’s longest stint was at Pomona where he remained for 18 years before moving to his own station at North Arm in 1978.

Shortly afterwards, he was transferred to Laidley where he eventually retired and made the town his home.

Bruce paid tribute to his father’s many friends, including next door neighbour Chris Ryan who supported Norm in so many ways as his health deteriorated.

“Many of you will remember Dad as the Laidley station master and as the friendly, talkative gentleman parked on a bench in the centre of town.”

Little heroes help big heroes

Friday and Monday.

Director Kelly Simpson said conversation turned to heroes when children saw 6(6 DQG WKH ¿UH VHUYLFH RXW LQ IRUFH DIWHU WKH ÀRRGV “They wanted to raise money, they thought that would be the best way to be

a helper,” Miss Simpsons.

Families donated a gold coin and the kids dressed up DV %DW 0DQ ¿UH ¿JKWHUV SROLFH R൶FHUV DQG SULQFHVVHV “It’s also really interesting to see their versions of heroes, who they see as heroes,” Miss Simpson said.

There are children whose family members are paraPHGLFV RU LQ WKH ¿UH EULJDGH Miss Simpson said, and looked up to their parents or grandparents in these roles as heroes.

Audrey, 4, wants to be a doctor when she grows up.

“They save everyone that are hurt or sick,” she said.

Taking after her grandfather, she dressed up as a paramedic for Heroes for Heroes day.

“Doctors are my heroes.”

All the money raised will go to the Laidley SES.

Scooter and skating fanatics are invited to free Holiday Scooter and Skate Workshops next month.

Lockyer Valley Regional Council Community Services Portfolio Councillor Michael Hagan said the workshops were a wonderful opportunity for the region’s youth to participate in over the holiday break.

“We look forward to welcoming our youth from across the region to this exciting and free activity,” he said.

Botanicals and the beauty of everyday life THERE IS still time to catch the combined exhibition of Cassandra Hodgin and Sue White at Glen Rock Gallery.

These are two skilful artists producing works of great delicacy.

Cassandra is interested in botanical art, which feeds her passion for the environment as well as her obsession with details.

She is a member of the Botanical Artists’ Society of

Queensland and continues to learn through the workshops they offer.

Her preferred medium is watercolour and coloured pencils for botanical art, but she also enjoys using pastels, pen and ink, lino printing, scratchboard and other media.

Sue White retired to the Somerset region, rediscovered her love of art and learned to paint with oils.

She loves painting the landscapes, farms, old houses and everyday life of this beautiful area.

In 2018 she travelled to France and England with friends where they painted in situ, using watercolours as they’re fast drying and light to carry.

Lights, camera, action High school students had a taste of Hollywood last week.

Noosa Film Academy visited four high schools and held a community workshop in Esk over the week to teach WKH EDVLFV RI ¿OP DFWLQJ DQG ¿OP PDNLQJ Sophia College drama students Matthew Rasell and Aliti-Rose Rokali said it was a great experience and they would do it again.

“We got an introduction

of the bases of acting and in RXU WDEOH JURXSV ZH ¿OPHG D scene each,” Matthew said.

The students crafted a scene together and improvised dialogue.

Aliti-Rose said the workshop was also challenging.

“You need to take as many takes as you can to get the perfect shot,” she said.

“But it’s fun to when you mess up you have a laugh and then you take another take.”

Picnic brings friends and family together FORMER and current Thornton and Townson residents gathered on Sunday for the annual Back to Townson picnic at Crosby Park.

Since 1985, the picnic gave residents from local schools and businesses the opportunity to meet and reminisce.

Eadie Bambling has been to every picnic since 1985 and is turning 101 this year.

Regenerative farming showcase coming to Helidon LAND managers are invited to attend the upcoming Lockyer Regenerative Agriculture Showcase.

Hosted by Lockyer Valley Regional Council, the free showcase is a chance to learn more about regenerative farming practices.
