‘Vote with your heart and conscience’

A FEW weeks ago I submitted a ‘letter to the editor’ giving my quite personal reasons for supporting the Yes campaign in the upcoming referendum.

I immediately attracted the attention of the No campaigners who went on the attack.

The No campaigners are trying to drown out any semblance of a reasonable debate with their constant strident negativity and misinformation.

I’m sure I’ll come in for even more attack when this letter is published, but it’s important to stand up for what is right.

There was an interesting article in The Gurdian recently exposing that the lobby groups running the deliberately polarising No campaign have deep links

to a number of conservative Christian organisations and consultancies.

Personally, I’ve noticed that their tactics are also remarkably similar to the anti-vax campaigns, having taken on both.

Who are the No campaigners? Again, this was exposed in The Guardian article: ‘the most prominent organisation in the No campaign is Fair Australia, which is an arm of a conservative lobby group called Advance’.

We’re talking ultra-right wing conservative lobby groups here, mostly funded by the 1%-ers.

The only interest they have in promoting the No campaign is their own self-serving interest.

So please be careful –don’t listen to the deliberately polarising negativity of the No campaign.

Vote with your heart and conscience.

We are the nation of the ‘fair go’ and the referendum is about giving our First Nation citizens a fair go.

Let’s be positive in the face of all the negativity.

Let’s vote Yes to champion a future where our Constitution is inclusive of all Australians.

Regional health concerns brought to Minister McBride

HEALTH workers in Somerset had the opportunity to bring their concerns, issues, and potential solutions to the government’s attention at a round table discussion on Thursday August 24.

Assistant Minister for Rural and Regional Health Emma McBride visited the issues facing the regional health workforce.

She was joined by Federal Member for Blair Shayne Neumann and representatives from Primary Health Networks, hospitals, disability and aged care sectors, allied health workers, and training facilitators.

What arose was an in-depth and multifaceted discussion on the limitations of accessing health care in a

regional area.

Transport was an area of concern, as was attracting and retaining GPs and allied health professionals to regional towns, and the limitations of the public health network jurisdictions.

Minister McBride said she was encouraged by some of the local solutions the participants presented.

“The issues around transport are ones that are big and growing problems for people who live outside of major

centres,” she said.

Minister McBride said local people often had the solutions to the challenges they face.

“It’s giving them the chance to be able to share those solutions, having the

Toogoolawah Police hosts community charity day

COMMUNITY unity was in full action at the Toogoolawah Bowls Club on August 22 as the Toogoolawah Police hosted their annual charity bowls day.

The event raises money for local organisations and Police Legacy, with this year’s chosen recipients Toogoolawah High School’s ‘Treefrogs’ Volleyball team.

Toogoolawah Police

John Cumner said community engagement through such events was integral for rural communities.

“Toogoolawah State High School has a volleyball team and having to travel fair distances to compete against other teams, we’re helping them with their travels, uniforms, or fees,” he said.

“We also raise money

for Police Legacy, which assists the families of died on duty, generally regarding assisting their children to get through school.”

The charity day has provided approximately $30,000 to Police Legacy and Toogoolawah groups like junior sporting clubs, Red Cross, and the Men’s Shed over the years.

Youth reach out to help community in need

A LITTLE outreach can go a long way.

That’s the hope for Laidley Community Centre’s Hearts Project, an initiative to reach people in need and let them know they are not alone.

The centre partnered with the Kokoda Youth Foundation to distribute fabric hearts containing the centre’s contact information across Laidley.

Five teens set out on August 22 to hang the hearts in parks and around town, particularly where people may be sleeping rough.

Kokoda Youth Foundation

‘On the Right Track’ project manager Keith Debnam said the collaboration with the the community service aspect of the youth program.

“We want to try and build

those connections within their own community,” he said.

“We also want them to be

grateful and be able to understand that it’s good to give back to those who provide for us.”

Steinhardt & Associates

Laidley Community Centre manager Alana Wahl said the hearts were a way to reach people who could not access the centre or did not know about their services.

“Especially because in this area transport is such a barrier, the fact that we’re taking this out to the community means they don’t have to come to us,” she said.

“If they give us a call and they’re out in the community we can come out to them to try and provide the support.”

Mr Debnam commended the centre on the initiative, particularly Sally Peacock who spearheaded the project.

“It’s absolutely wonderful that people like Sally and the community can assist and reach out and take our young people on for things like the Hearts Program,” he said.

Kokoda YF to host Digital Detox

THE KOKODA Youth Foundation will host a Digital Detox Program from September 24 to October 1 to support families of 12- to 14-year-olds.

Program coordinator Chris Emert said the adventure-based program held at Kokoda Park in Thornton, Lockyer Valley was all about helping families to balance technology in their lifestyles.

“We do things like highropes, low-ropes, zip-line, giant swing, expedition, amazing race, ultimate frisbee, basketball and archery,” Mr Emert said.

“We’re not saying ‘throw technology out’, we’re really about helping kids and their families to balance technology better in line with the other important aspects of their lives.”

Mr Emert is joined by psychologist Dr Barry

Oliver.

“We teach them how to do some particular breathing to help them regulate themselves when they get anxious, and we provide them with tools and understanding so they’re more likely to self-regulate their use of technology as opposed to automatically picking it up,” Mr Emert said.

“If [parents are] happy with the way they’re relating with their child and technology, then keep doing what they’re doing.

“But if they want to bring about change and connection with their child and to be empowered by it, then get on and apply.”

Families can apply up until September 8 by visiting kokodayouthfoundation.com/youth-programs/digital-detox

Bushfood business preparing for legal battle with Energex contractor

ROPELEY business

Native Oz Bushfoods are preparing for a legal battle with Energex contractor ETS Infrastructure Management over the alleged damage to a grove of northern sandalwood trees on their property in January 2023.

Doug and Tracey Goebel claimed ETS ‘maliciously’ sprayed the culturally the grove to slowly die out.

Mrs Goebel said out of 151 trees cultivated over a period of 15 years, only around 20 were still alive.

They estimated to pull 20kg of leaves off each tree in a year, which could be sold for up to $20 for 20 grams.

“That was our retirement fund, basically,” she said.

“It took us 15 years to get it to where we had it, ready to go, and it was all

ripped away.”

ETS maintained the trees were drilled and injected, rather than sprayed with chemicals. A Biosecurity Queensland spokesperson said they were aware of the allegation.

“As an investigation is ongoing, it is not appropriate to comment further,” they said.

Reduce speed: prepare for trauma season

TOOGOOLAWAH wildlife rescuer Charlie Lewis buried 20 koalas on August 19, her second mass burial of the year.

Ms Lewis has monitored, watched and rescued wildlife for around 45 years, and travels throughout Somerset working alongside the Ipswich Koala Protection Society, RSPCA and other groups.

“We basically ran out of room in our morgue and had to utilise a freezer belonging to another lady a few doors up,” Ms Lewis said.

“We refuse to just dump the koalas, they deserve more respect than that.”

Coast Dr Romane Cristescu urged drivers to be wary of koalas near roads and gave results on koala numbers detected under the project thus far.

“We rescuers and carers refer to the koala mating season as the trauma season,” she said.

Male koalas are more active from September to March, crossing roads and entering properties in search of a mate.

Ms Lewis said she receives regular call outs for sick, injured and deceased koalas.

“We had four koalas just last week on its own, and out of those four there was only one that made it,” she said.

Ms Lewis said there were many things governments, residents and businesses could do to protect koalas.

“It would be so good if council and TMR could team up and agree to slow the trafshe said.

“We can tell you where the main crossing areas are based on the books, we keep records on where we bring koalas in from when they’re hit or deceased.”

Ms Lewis suggested reducing the speed along koala corridors to 60km/hour from 6pm-6am, which has been successful in other regions.

Ms Lewis thanked Ivory Creek Pet Retreat for digging and burying the koalas.

TOOGOOLAWAH State High School year 10 students Hunter Master-Woods and Jorja Williams cycled, canoed and hiked as part of Stanley River Environmental Education Centre’s Bunya to Bay program this month.

Through the program, Hunter and Jorja made life-long friends and learned about Indigenous Elders’ ways of life.

“I’ve learned that socialising is really important, it really helps with your mental health and skills with communicating with others,” Hunter said.

“At the start we were complete strangers, we did not know one another, but at the end we grew this really tight bond and were basically inseparable,” Jorja said.

“It really helped me get out of my comfort zone and be more social with people, to be somewhere where you have no-one that you know.”

The participants learned from Indigenous Elders about Bunya trees, trails, and wildlife.

Jorja said the once-in-alifetime opportunity was educational and inspiring.

Dance festival returns for 42nd year

DANCERS from across southeast Queensland will once again descend on Gatton this September for the Lockyer District Dancing Festival.

The eisteddfod brings 14 days of dance entertainment and competition to the Gatton Shire Hall from September 7.

Lockyer District Dancing Festival convenor Sally Jess said the annual festival was a platform to showcase young performers’ talents.

“It’s our 42nd year of running the Lockyer District Dancing Festival which is such a great accomplishment that it can still carry on and provide a platform for children who have such a passion for dancing to be able to showcase their talents,” she said.

This year, there are more than 1,300 solo acts, 80 duo and trio acts, plus more than 400 in the groups section.

“In total, over 1,900 acts across the duration,” Sally said.

“We’ve got 34 studios and

schools coming.

“Credit to their teachers for putting the time and

this point, to be eisteddfod ready.”

The competition covers a variety of dance styles,

including ballet, jazz, tap, contemporary, lyrical, hiphip, national, and demicharacter.

There is a genre to suit all tastes and the general public are welcome to come in for a small admission fee and enjoy the packed schedule of dance.

“It’s quite entertaining, watching the talent of these children,” Sally said. Groups are on from September 7 to 10, including primary and high schools on September 8.

Solos, duos, and trios are on from September 13 to 22, followed by the Gala and Awards Presentation on September 22.

Sally thanked the adjudicators for taking time to attend the eisteddfod. The committee also wish to thank the sponsors for their generosity, whether they are sponsors of sections, awards, or the festival in general, without whom the event would not be possible.

Lockyer Toyota to expand to Plainland

ADVERTORIAL

LOCKYER Valley Motors will expand their Toyota location services to Plainland after Lockyer Valley Toyota dealer principal Ian O’Brien acquired a block of land in the Schulte’s precinct on Gehrke Rd Plainland.

The Lockyer Valley Motors branch went unconditional on Friday August 18 and will sit on a 7,500 square meter block and feature the Toyota brand and three other car titles for future expansion.

Mr O’Brien purchased owner of Schulte’s

Meat Tavern Paul Schulte and said the new branch would work in conjunction with the Gatton dealership.

“The idea is to be selfbe its own branch in the Lockyer Valley,” he said.

“Gatton will continue its services in Gatton, the idea is to expand slowly.”

Previous owner of Schulte’s Meat Tavern, Paul Schulte, said Plainland was a vital growth region in the Lockyer Valley and wanted to sell the land to a local business.

“I had the opportunity to sell it to a Brisbane

developer, but I chose to sell it to O’Brien because I wanted to keep it local,” he said.

Mr Schulte said he had promised to sell the land to Mr O’Brien seven years ago after a handshake deal with his father, John O’Brien.

“My dad was good mates with his dad, and Johnny was looking to buy in Plainland,” he said.

“I said to him if ever I sell it, I’ll give you a shot at it, and I shook hands with him.”

Settlements for the Plainland location will take place September 1, 2023.

MOORE WEEKLY STARS

August 28-September 3, 2023 ARIES

Impatient Rams are keen to share information and exchange ideas with family, friends and work colleagues. But remember, Venus is reversing through your friendship zone (until next Monday, September 4) and Mercury is reversing through your job and daily routine zones (until September 15). And then, on Wednesday night, the Super Blue Moon lights up your self-sabotage zone. So make sure your amusing chatter doesn’t denigrate into gratuitous gossip.

TAURUS

With Venus (your power planet) and Mercury both in retrograde mode, your current inclination is to be timid and hypervigilant. But don’t overdo it, Bulls! With Jupiter and Uranus rollicking through your sign, aim to be cautiously optimistic and moderately adventurous. Otherwise, you’ll miss fortuitous opportunities when they come along. As movie star (and regret the things I didn’t do, not what I did.”

GEMINI

The planets activate your Gemini curiosity and rev up your restlessness. But you could encounter roadblocks along the way, as retrograde Mercury stymies your progress. Hasty actions and half-baked plans will only lead to long-term frustrations. You’re full of fabulous ideas but make sure you can differentiate between fact and fantasy. If you balance dynamic action with a dose of discipline and a spoonful of reality, then you’ll have a productive week.

CANCER

The Super Blue Moon, Mercury, Saturn and Neptune are activating your travel and education zones. So it’s time to make plans for a future trip or new course of study. However –with Mercury retro until September 15 – you need to be extremely patient and persistent. Then, when the right moment manifests, Be inspired by birthday great, singer-songwritoff like a bird.”

LEO

Venus has been reversing through your sign for the past six weeks. So you may feel as if you’ve been treading water … or even going backwards. Has your Lion mojo gone missing? Has your ambition disappeared? experienced problems with a colleague or forwards on September 4. But you still have one more week to go – so slow down, pace yourself and be patient.

VIRGO

Venus and your ruler, Mercury, are both retmatters could be very frustrating this week. Heed the wise words of billionaire (and birthof my life when I’ve had a bundle of ideas come along, and I’ve had long dry spells.” Be patient, keep things in perspective and keep plugging away. Put your clever Virgo mind to good use via reading, revising, researching and rehearsing.

LIBRA

With Venus retrograde, and Mercury reversing through your self-sabotage zone, are you being your own worst enemy? Is the only person undermining your efforts actually you? Stop being an over-accommodating Libra who’s trying to please everyone. Instead, start focusing on your future health and happiness. Your motto is from birthday should have high expectations for yourself, and others should come second.”

SCORPIO

Venus is reversing through your career zone, Mercury is retrograding through your peer up your friendship zone. So a work colleague antagonise you, or a friend could give you confusing information. Avoid the temptation to just sulk, stew and simmer. A double dose of Scorpio charm and diplomacy will get you through with your reputation (and sanity) intact!

SAGITTARIUS

Expect a domestic drama or a professional project to go haywire, as this week’s rare Super Blue Moon (and retrograde Mercury) leave you wondering what on earth is going on! Do your best to be especially diplomatic with a cranky colleague or a recalcitrant relative. Blunt honesty isn’t the best policy; communication will improve with some creative sugar-coating. A pinch of patience (not your usual modus operandi) will also help you muddle through.

CAPRICORN

Saturn (your ruling planet) and the rare Super Blue Moon stimulate your communication and education zones. But remember that Venus and Mercury are both in retrograde motion (until September 4 and 15). So make sure you communicate clearly, are extra patient and understanding with loved ones and work colleagues, and don’t assume you have all the answers. Clever Capricorns will take the time to revisit, revise, reconsider, re-evaluate and readjust.

AQUARIUS

The Super Blue Moon, Saturn, Neptune and retrograde Mercury are stirring up your

Aquarians will avoid making expensive purchases or major money moves this week, as situation through rose-coloured glasses. Mars moves into your travel zone, so plan a weekend getaway (or a longer holiday) for after September 15.

PISCES

This week the rare Super Full Moon’s in moody Pisces, and Mercury is reversing through your partnership zone. Plus, Venus continues retrograding through your wellbeing zone. So – when it comes to your health (physical, mental and emotional) and close relationships – you’ll have to be extra patient with yourself and others. Be inspired by actress and comedian Lily Tomlin (who turns under construction.”

Wild Dog Control Program

The Department of Agriculture and Fisheries has partnered with Somerset Regional Council to conduct a wild dog baiting program throughout Somerset in an effort to control wild dog numbers. Important information when baiting with 1080:

• Baiting can be carried out within 5km of a town. Prior approval from an authorised Council officer is required, increased risk mitigation and conditions apply.

• Baits cannot be laid within 50m of a roadway or within 5m of a boundary fence.

• Notification of 72 hours must be given to all adjoining neighbours (including across roadways).

• An authority to sign form is required if obtaining baits for another person.

• You must supply your rates notice.

• Unconsumed baits are to be retrieved within seven days and destroyed.

A Council employee will attend the following sites to assist with the preparation of 1080 poison baits for the control of dingoes/wild dogs:

11 September Middle Creek, Bryden, 7.30am-9am

11 September Fernvale Camp Draft Grounds, 10.30am-12pm

11 September Kilcoy Showgrounds, 7.30am-9am

11 September Moore Pony Club Grounds, Station Street, 10.30am-12pm
