While the media landscape is constantly changing, the upheaval we’ve seen in the last two years was a seismic shift.

As many readers will be familiar, The Independent began its life in response to a nation-wide cutting of print newspapers.

In both the cessation of the printed Gatton Star and the emergence of The Independent, community sentiment was clear: there is still demand for printed newspapers.

As a reader of this newspaper, I encourage you to have your say to the government on your news and your views.

The House of Representatives Standing Committee on Communications and the Arts, chaired by Dr Anne Webster MP, has released an online survey, seeking views on how Australians’ living in regional, rural or remote areas access news as part of a federal parliamentary inquiry into Australia’s regional newspapers.

The survey is open until 11 February 2022 and takes less than 10 minutes to complete - Australia’s Regional Newspapers Survey (surveymonkey.com) Your say is valuable and we want you, our readers, to be a part of the future of regional newspapers.

I am writing this letter in appreciation to the four wonderful people, three ladies and one gentleman, and the ambulance officer as well.

I had a fall at the Gatton Plaza car park in mid

December 2021, these people came to my aid and did not leave me until the ambulance departed for the hospital.

Their help and assistance in keeping me calm and comfortable was amazing,

The people who make our community great

Shires across the country recognised the citizens who make the community proud at Australia Day Awards and welcomed new Australian Citizens last Wednesday.

Somserset Citizen of the Year Award was awarded to Jayne McKenzie.

For over 35 years, her many contributions and volunteer hours have benefited Kilcoy Community Health, Kilcoy Fashion on the field, Kilcoy Army Cadets, Kilcoy Indoor Sport Centre and Toogoolawah Gym and was the Here for Life, Suicide Prevention Officer for many years.

She has supported youth in a myriad of ways and has been instrumental in bringing allied health services to Somerset.

Wanda Kropp was named Somerset’s Young Citizen of the Year Award.

Wanda is an active, motivated, and enthusiastic member of Hazeldean Rural Fire Brigade.

As a firefighter, Wanda is well known for giving 110% in whatever function or task she works on.

In the Lockyer Valley, Doreen Sabburg was awarded Citizen of the Year.

For more than 64 years,

Esk welcomes its newest citizens on Australia Day.

Doreen has volunteered at the Peace Lutheran Church, and her association with the Ladies Women’s Guild stretches back to the 1950s.

The Mayoral Award went to local businesswoman,

Valerie Vaughan.

Lockyer Valley Regional Council Mayor Tanya Milligan said it gave her great pleasure to announce Valerie as the recipient of the award, which recognises

a community member who has achieved great things for others.

“Valerie is a highly valued member of our community, raised on the land as a child where an understanding of

country values was planted and nurtured,” she said.

“Her compassion, kindness and exceptional service is legendary in Gatton and she has touched many lives over the years, often opening her

chemist before and after business hours to those in need, and generally going above and beyond for our community.”

Foodbank’s mutual support in Lockyer

For over 10 years, local farmers from the Lockyer Valley Region have generously donated fresh fruit and vegetables, including lettuce, tomato, potato, pumpkin, garlic, cabbage, carrot, turnip, onion, and broccoli, to Foodbank Queensland to help people in need.

Foodbank Queensland Food Supply Manager Bob McMillan said Foodbank was proud to work with growers in the Lockyer Valley to rescue food, reduce waste and fight hunger.

“Since this time last year, our Food Donors in the Lockyer Valley region have donated enough food to help us distribute 578,000 meals to people in need across Queensland,” Mr McMillan said.

“With many growers across Queensland having been impacted by the events of last year, this is an incredibly generous donation that has gone a long way to helping Queenslanders in crisis.”

clubs to bulk food donations, to ensure struggling families receive the support they need.

With many children going to school without breakfast or lunch, Foodbank’s School Breakfast Program is vital.

In the Lockyer Valley Region, Foodbank Queensland currently provides fresh fruit, bread, milk and cereal to 10 schools.

With the support of our local Member Charity, ADRA Lockyer Food Pantry Gatton, these schools can run breakfast clubs all year round to help ensure children receive the healthy breakfasts they need to grow, learn and thrive.

Lockyer District State High School chaplain Doug Espie said his school has been ‘incredibly blessed’ by the work of Foodbank.

“Each week we provide breakfast for hundreds of students who may otherwise miss out,” Mr Espie said.

“The need is significant, and the difference is tangible.

“We can’t thank you enough for the simple yet powerful difference that Foodbank has made to our school.”

Saluting their Service Grants open The Federal Government’s Saluting Their Service (STS) Commemorative Grants Program is now available for projects that preserve local military history and honour service personnel.

Neumann, said local communities recognise the importance of commemorating and honouring the contribution of servicemen and women.

“This program helps to preserve Australia’s wartime heritage,” Mr Neumann said.

or maintaining a local war memorial, installing a flagpole in a school’s Anzac memorial garden, or helping local museums display wartime memorabilia, this funding will help ensure that our community and nation never forget the men and women who have served Australia.”

Esk Police station farewells retiring Sergeant Karlene Trezise Sergeant Karlene Trezise, Officer in Charge of the Esk Police Station has announced her early retirement after 22 years of dedicated service with the

Queensland Police Service.

Sergeant Trezise arrived in Esk in 2009 and has committed the last 13 years of her working life to the community of Esk,

and would like to sincerely thank the community, businesses and other emergency services for their endless support, and tireless work in keeping our

community safe and their contribution to making Esk a great place to live.

She said without this collaboration we wouldn’t be living the life we do in such

a wonderful community.

Sergeant Trezise will continue to live in the Esk area and enjoy the spoils of this hard work and enjoy the Community.

A newly appointed Officer in Charge will arrive in coming months and Acting Sergeant Adrian Solah will fill the role as Officer in Charge of Esk station.

Geoff Dixon retired as captain of the Gatton Auxiliary Queensland Rescue and Fire Service, handing over the reins to Captain Stephen Soderquist.

Gatton Fire Station has welcomed a new captain to the auxiliary service after the retirement of long-serving captain Geoff Dixon.

Stephen Soderquist was appointed captain in January.

‘Local boy’ Captain Soderquist has lived in

Gatton since for ten years and lived at the Lockyer Valley since he was in grade 8.

“I’ve very humbled and proud to take this role on,” he said.

Captain Soderquist joined the fire service in 1998.

He was stationed at Forest Hill until he moved to Gatton in 2012.

“Last year I was promoted to the position of lieutenant and with Geoff’s retirement, the captain position became available,” he said.

Captain Soderquist thanked Mr Dixon for his commitment to the town and wished him all the best in his retirement.

“I think he’s done a

wonderful job,” Captain Soderquist said.

“We should really celebrate his time.”

Outgoing captain Geoff Dixon is also a ‘born and bred’ local.

He has been stationed at Gatton Station for his 36 year entire fire service career.

“Some of the highlights

have been seeing the younger guys progress through the ranks, particularly Steve,” Mr Dixon said.

“It’s been a highlight seeing them fulfill their potential and helping them along the way.”

He looks back on his career with satisfaction knowing that he helped people and

gave back to his community.

Captain Soderquist said the ‘bar has already been set very high’ and looks forward to leading his team.

“I look forward to working with the team and ensuring we have our staff trained at a level that lets us do our job to the high standard that is expected,” he said.

Leap into new ballet class

A new class is coming to Esk that combines creativity, exercise, and socialising.

Weekly ballet classes for seniors start next week, run by Esk local Hélène Hawes.

But don’t be deterred by the high classical art form.

The Queensland Ballet syllabus has been specially developed to build strength and balance for mature adults.

Mrs Hawes undertook a two day training course with Queensland Ballet to deliver a class to the Somerset community that is suitable for any age and ability, with assistance from the Regional Art Development Fund.

“The foundation is all classical ballet steps and classical ballet techniques, but it has all been modified with the aging body in mind,” she said.

“It’s gentle, but it’s very effective.”

With an extensive background in classical ballet teaching, Mrs Hawes has hoped to start a community ballet class since she moved to Esk four years ago.

“I had it in my mind for some time,” she said.

It was on the ‘back burner’ until she found the Queensland Ballet course.

“I always found it to be something where I could express myself, it is liberating,” Mrs Hawes said.

“It brings out things inside you that you’re probably too shy to show otherwise.”

While ideal for seniors, Mrs Hawes said adults of any age can join the class.

The classes are free, thanks to in kind support from Somerset Regional Council, at the Somerset Civic Centre in Esk on Tuesdays 2pm-3pm.

Consultation survey winners

The winners of the Lake Apex and Lake Freeman Precinct Community Survey and Drawing Competition have been announced.

Lockyer Valley Regional Council would like to congratulate survey winners, Sarah Cranston and Tammy Heit and drawing competition winner, seven-year-old Isla O’Keeffe.

Council undertook a review of the existing Lake Apex Master Plan 2010 late last year.

Lockyer Valley Regional Council Mayor Tanya Milligan thanked the community for their input throughout the consultation period.

“It was a timely opportunity check in with our community about what they would now like to see for the future,” Cr Milligan said.

“We will certainly consider how we can use the community’s ideas to inform a brighter, more resilient future at the Lakes Precinct.”

All winners received a $100 Lockyer Valley Gift Card, donated by Lockyer Chamber of Commerce.

Showcasing Aboriginal art in Laidley

Laidley Pioneer Village is now home to a stunning Aboriginal mural painted by acclaimed Ipswich artist Kylie Hill.

Ms Hill was recognised

by Ipswich City Council as the recipient of the Cultural Award at this year’s Australia Day Awards.

The Pioneer Village was seeking a mural artist to enliven one of the sheds in the village and Ms Hill’s Indigenous artwork was an ideal addition to the historical museum.

Ms Hill said the motifs on the mural represent life and culture in the area.

End panels in earth tones of browns and orange repre-

sent the land, meeting places, and pay homage to ancestors.

“It’s all about our Indigenous culture, sharing it here,

sharing it with the Laidley community,” Ms Hill said.

The Springfield-based artist has family ties in Laidley.

Her sister, niece and nephew live in Laidley and go to school locally.

Along with her daughters, they came to help complete the mural last week.

“It’s good having them down here and being a part of

it,” Ms Hill said.

“It’s good to have some Aboriginal art here, I love it.”

They started painting the mural last Monday and completed the work on Friday.

Visitors to the pioneer village on Wednesday could see the artists in action as they continued painting throughout the Australia Day celebrations.

Dusk till Dawn charity run returns to Toogoolawah A charity run to raise money for Aussie Farmers will return to Toogoolawah Showgrounds for the second year.

Race director Geoff Williams said the event originated decades ago and became a highly anticipated event in the running season.

“Moving the event to Toogoolawah Showgrounds in 2021 proved challenging with COVID, but allowed the course to be lengthened from a 500m oval shape to a varied shape of 1000m,” Mr Williams said.

The 2022 run or walk will start at 6pm on February 5 and conclude at 6am on

Sunday February 6.

“We will be honoured having Ron Grant, the first person to run around Australia present to chat with and start the event,” Mr Williams said.

The event consists of a 10k kids only run/walk, a half marathon, full marathon, 50k, 100k, 6hr &

12run runners or walkers, plus options for relay teams.

“I wish to thank Ray White Esk for their kind donation, Have A Chat Café and Toogoolawah Hotel for their support,” Mr Williams said.

Lockyer Valley Billy Cart Association will host their Family Fun Day from 10am.

The thrilling Gatton event has proved a hit with families and cart enthusiasts at its inaugural event in May and follow up in October.

Food and coffee carts will dish

up delicious treats to keep racers and spectators fuelled up and ready to go.

Riley will return with his lemonade stand, providing refreshing

home-made beverages and raising money for Ronald McDonald House.

Story tellers collaborate in Toogoolawah A group of locals are proving that having a disability needn’t stop you showcasing your abilities.

Ten clients of the Carinity Our House disability support service in Toogoolawah are now published artists and authors, having contributed their original stories and images for the Our House Stories book.

The idea for the book developed after Carinity Our House staff member Tracy Dobson attended her local writing group.

“I had come up with an idea on how to start it and I thought I would get the group to contribute to the story,” Ms Dobson said.

The budding authors then developed their own original

narratives.

Amongst the contributors to Our House Stories are talented artist Corrie Young, who painted the book’s cover image.

Fellow Carinity Our House clients Ashleigh Barry, Lisa Dean, Ryan Bagnall, Belinda Bagnall, Hugo Teske, Glenda Allen, Peter Hemsley, Amber Bennett and Shane Smith

also contributed stories and illustrations.

Rural life inspired Mr Smith’s short story, ‘The Cowboy’s Prayer.’

“It was a great opportunity writing the book and I hope to make another book soon,” Mr Smith said.

Steve was appointed ‘Queensland’s Chief Entrepreneur’ in 2018, a volunteer role which gave him unique insight into the Queensland business landscape.

He spent the year traveling right around Queensland meeting business owners, innovators and the next generation of school-aged entrepreneurs.

Brisbane based artist Ross Manning presented a new live performance alongside his work, Pixel Points, 2018, in Material Sound at The Condensery on Friday’s opening night.

New sounds come to Somerset Material Sound, an original sound and kinetic exhibition featuring Australian artists at the forefront of sound experimentation in a contemporary art context, opened at The Condensery on January 29 and will run until April 3.

The Condensery Somerset Regional Art Gallery Advisory Committee Chair Deputy Mayor Helen Bri-

eschke said Material Sound brings together fascinating work by six art practitioners and collaborative groups, each creating an experience of sound within installations constructed from everyday materials.

“This exhibition is a coup for the gallery and will provide a unique and engaging experience for visitors during

the exhibit’s run at The Condensery,” she said.

Handmade instruments and electronics, recycled components, outmoded technologies, fake technologies, imagined sounds, and silences are brought together to connect with ideas and practices that expand our sense of how art is made, how it affects us, how we think about it and

how we listen to our world.

Material Sound curator Caleb Kelly said having sound in exhibitions makes viewers feel the works differently.

“We are engaged by other senses, our body is engaged, we walk through the pieces in a way that you can’t do with a painting,” Mr Kelly said.

Material Sound features work by artists Vicky

Browne, Pia van Gelder, Caitlin Franzmann, Peter Blamey, Vincent & Vaughan Wozniak-O’Connor and Ross Manning, whose works and practices investigate sound and materials within art and performance.

These artists are leading an international interest in the material qualities of sound and its modes of generation.

In Australia, this interest particularly addresses the ecological consequences of the materials we so readily consume and discard.

Material Sound is a Murray Art Museum Albury exhibition.

This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council for the Arts.

UQ in project to tackle sorghum lodging A new $11.6 million, five-and-a-half-year joint investment is aiming to address lodging in sorghum – an issue that is consistently rated as the most significant concern facing Australian sorghum growers and costing on average $12 million worth in yield loss annually.

This strategic investment aims to de-couple the relationship between height, yield and lodging to increase the water-limited yield potential of sorghum, reducing grain-fill yield loss by 25 per cent.

The knowledge and techniques developed will allow breeders to chase yield harder without greater lodging risk.

The investment comprises in-kind and cash investment between (GRDC), global commercial partner Advanta Seeds and trusted longterm partners University of Queensland (UQ) and the

Top Tips to make your car last longer • Follow routine maintenance. There are some basic things you should be doing to keep your car running. Regular servicing at a reputable service centre is essential to the longevity of your vehicle and to preserve resale value.

• Use a high-mileage oil. Once your car gets older it won’t process oil quite like it did in its younger days.

• Keep the outside of your car clean. Washing your car isn’t just to make it look pretty for the neighbours. Mud and dirt build up can lead to rust and other paint imperfections • Do regular interior cleaning. I hear some parents talk about how gross their kids cars are and I just don’t get it. Ipswich recognises community spirit

Ipswich held its Australia Day Awards on Wednesday January 19.

Community, Culture, Arts and Sport Committee chairperson Councillor Andrew Fechner said the Ipswich Australia Day Awards were an opportunity for the community to honour outstanding contributions of our fellow citizens.

“Every nominee and finalist for this year’s awards has been on a journey of making change, big and small, across the city and beyond,” Cr Fechner said.

“Congratulations and thanks to Zoe Knorre who, along with all our 2022 award nominees, are shining examples of how truly innovative and supportive our community continues to be in Ipswich.”

Citizen of the Year Award: Zoe Knorre Zoe Knorre has changed many women’s lives for the better through her outstanding volunteer work, culminating in her role as Chief Executive and founder of Grace Homestead.

Young Citizen of the Year Award:

Tamara Whiting Tamara developed the not-for-profit service Cunnara Paiabun Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Corporation.

The charity works to relieve suffering, distress and helplessness of individuals through culturally sensitive services.

Senior Citizen of the Year Award: Gregory Broad Gregory has made considerable contributions to the Ipswich region over four decades of volunteering.

Cultural Award of the Year: Kylie Hill Kylie is a passionate artist who has received international acclaim for her Indigenous artworks and designs.

Sport and Recreation Award winner: Scott Morrison For seven years, Scott worked tirelessly to reinstate the Dinmore Bushrats Soccer Club.

Rosewood recognises citizen of the year Ian Luetchford was named Rosewood Lions Citizen of the Year on Australia Day. He was among four nominations received for this year’s Citizen of the Year Award, sponsored by the Rosewood Lions Club.

Mr Luetchford and the nominees have devoted many volunteer hours to groups such as the Rosewood RSL Sub Branch, Rosewood Uniting Church, Rosewood Show Society, Rosewood Lions Club, Cabanda Aged Care, Ipswich Catholic Community and Toastmasters.

Mr Luetchford was nominated by the Rosewood RSL Sub Branch and also volunteers for the Rosewood Lions Club, Meals on Wheels, Cabanda Care and the Ipswich Catholic Community.

ROSEWOOD

Mr Luetchford has been a member of Rosewood Lions Club for 26 years, serving in positions of president, director, campground co-ordinator and catering co-ordinator.

Since arriving in Rosewood in 1984, Mr Luetchford has served the Rosewood Kindergarten, St Brigid’s School, Rosewood Scouts and Rosewood Guides.

He has also been supportive of his wife’s fundraising efforts for Diabetes Queensland and JDRF which support Type 1 Diabetics.

Together they have raised almost $20,000.

4198 rural, regional and suburban press readers were surveyed - this was considered a demographic portrait of just who makes up country press readership, 61% were female and 38% were male.

The survey figures were overwhelmingly in favour of print ….…..

-86% think a printed newspaper is an essential service for their community -83% of people would prefer to access their local news in printed format -While 59% said they only read one local newspaper, 41% said they read two or more local newspapers.

BOWLS TOOGOOLAWAH BOWLS CLUB On Thursday 27th January, unfortunately the green was too wet for play.

Sunday 30th January was a fine day and the 12 players on the green had a great day. Players vied for the Lowest Winning Score. Winners on the day were Gerrit Winkler, Lyn McWhirter and Peter Hassall. Runners up were Cindy Mills, Len Smyth and Robert Griffin. Fruit tray raffle went to Gerrit Winkeler.

Members and visitors are invited to play on Thursdays with Names in by 9.00am for a 9.30am commencement and on Sundays with Names in by 12.00pm for a 12.30pm commencement.

Whether you are a resident or visitor to the Brisbane Valley and an experienced bowler or not you are welcome to join us in a game. Novice players are also given coaching to ensure that they enjoy the game.

For each Members calendar: l Our first Club meeting for 2022 will be held on Sunday 13th February 2022. All members are invited to attend at 9.00am and to help in the running of the club by participating in discussions. l On the 22nd of March we will be holding a Toogoolawah Golden Cup Challenge Open. A steady start to the innings was made by Lockyer after winning the toss. With the score at 3 for 81 after 20 overs, the scene was set for Brandon Sabburg 67 and Kade Martin 68 not out to take the score to 197 for the 4th wicket. Some late order hitting and excellent running between the wickets got Lockyer to 6 for 234 from their 50 overs. Corey Diophantus picked up 3 wickets for Central Downs.

Central Downs struggled to 3 for 33 against excellent bowling by Lockyer’s openers, who were supported by a great catch at second slip from Josh Reisenleiter. The spinners then came on and restricted Central Downs to 3 runs per over while also taking 4 wickets in the next 22 overs. Some late hitting from James Sinclair gave Central Downs a glimmer of hope but Lockyer were in control of the situation and won by 49 runs.

My special thanks to Mike McGovern and Darryl Ready, as they really carried the burden for much of last season.

I would also like to acknowledge the contribution made by Andrew Voigt to the development of over 50s.

2021 was a mixed season

for Lockyer/Ipswich; we were always in the running in over 60s, but in both over 50s sides we were a non-event.

However, in the last match of the season, Div Three over 50s came very close to a win, and showed the development that was occurring under Randall Olm’s captaincy. I am quietly

confident that this, and the work done in the off season will see Lockyer with a fairly useful Div Three O50s side on the paddock this season.

Veterans have become more integrated with the Lockyer Cricket Association, and I am sure that this will be very beneficial to both organisations.

We have the huge advantage of a local newspaper which is dedicated to promoting local activities, especially sport.

Finally, I would like to thank all of the players and supporters for your team efforts and the support provided in what was a very difficult year. - Mike Nowlan.
