Council approved the development of a solar farm at Adare.

Solar farm to power two towns

BY GRACE CRICHTON A new solar farm to be constructed north of Gatton will have the potential to power all the homes in Gatton and Laidley.

Lockyer Valley Regional Council approved the development of the farm on a 40ha property at Goos Road in their last ordinary meeting.

In the application report presented at the meeting, the proposal states the estimated electricity generated by the facility can supply power to 4888 homes, based on the average Australian home consuming 19kWh/day.

As of the 2016 census, there 4535 homes in Gatton and Laidley combined.

The proposed solar panel

array, occupying a 20ha area, will be 16.62MW in size with a battery storage capacity of 2.25MW/4.5MWh. It will connect into the existing Gatton substation located 1km northwest of the site by the existing 33kV high voltage transmission line.

However, there were concerns raised on the impact the site would have on

surrounding areas.

During the public notification phase, 12 properly made submissions were lodged, one of which had 40 signatories.

There were concerns over the visual impact, waste management, glare, and land clearing.

These concerns were addressed in the development application, including addi-

tional landscaping to reduce the visual impact.

The application was made

by Gatton Solar Farm Pty Ltd, registered in December 2020.

Early documents in the application show the applicant as European Energy A/S, an international developer of solar and wind farms since 2004.

In a statement, European

Energy CEO Knud Erik Andersen said the company’s growth is a consequence of the growing awareness of climate challenges facing the world.

“As front-runners in combatting climate change, we need to scale up our activities worldwide, and have managed to do so over the past year,” Mr Andersen said.

COVID Pfizer vaccine hub comes to Lowood Darling Downs and West Moreton PHN have partnered with Somerset Regional Council to host a COVID-19 Pfizer Vaccination Hub at the Lowood Showgrounds for people living in

Lowood and surrounding areas.

Mayor Graeme Lehmann said the clinic allows easier access to the vaccine.

“This follows the two clinics held in September at

the Somerset Civic Centre in Esk,” he said.

“I encourage Lowood residents to take advantage of the opportunity when the vaccination hub opens for three days on 6 October.”

The Hub will be open on Wednesday October 6 from 10am-7pm, Thursday October 7 from 7am-4pm, and Friday October 8 from 7am-1pm.

Kaye joins team for response project Laidley Community Centre welcomed Kaye Duggan to help roll out a vital disaster response project.

The Community Volunteer Response Project, funded under the Commonwealth/ State Disaster Recovery Funding arrangements, aims to provide training to achieve a co-ordinated response effort.

“In times of disaster people are willing to put their hand up and pitch in to help out their neighbours,” Ms Duggan said.

“The challenge with this is well-meaning people popping up out of the blue in the middle of the crisis can actually do more harm than good because they don’t always have adequate training.”

Poultry will be living in luxury at next year’s Lowood Show, thanks to the recently renovated poultry pavilion at the show grounds.

The newly refurbished building and cages were opened on Saturday.

The project was funded by grants from three levels of government, sponsors and volunteers.

Somerset Councillor Sean Choat commended the efforts, funds, and time put in by all parties.

“The show society should be very proud, because Lowood now has the biggest and best poultry shed in the whole of the Somerset region,” Cr Choat said.

profit was made. These funds are carried forward to assist in the funding for the following year’s Christmas tree event.

For the last few years sponsorship was very limited and our thanks goes to those individuals and businesses who provided financial support to offset the running costs of the event.

Sadly, the past few years have seen Christmas tree run at a significant loss.

The feedback from the community was good as a well-run event. The kids certainly enjoyed the rides and of course the arrival of ‘Santa’.

Unfortunately, the club cannot sustain such losses and with the small numbers of Apex members and the impact of Covid, fund raising has also become very difficult. The hard decision had to be made and the Brisbane Valley Apex club will not be staging the annual Christmas tree at Esk in 2021.

If another community group wishes to organise and operate the 2021 Christmas tree event at Esk, Brisbane Valley Apex club is happy to discuss and support.

The Club will celebrate its 50th anniversary in February 2022.

Preparedness a priority as bush fire season begins

As temperatures begin to heat up, Fire and Emergency Services Minister Mark Ryan said Queensland is now experiencing an increase in bushfire potential.

“Under these conditions, we can expect fires to start and take hold quickly, so everyone should have their bushfire survival plans upto-date and be ready to enact them if needed.”

Rural Fire Service Regional Manager for Southeast Queensland Alan Gillespie agrees, saying fire season is well and truly upon us.

“The best example, and a timely reminder, is the Gregors Creek fire that happened just recently up near Toogoolawah,” he said.

“What drives these big grass fires are low humidity and wind speed coupled with the fact that we have a lot of grass at the moment following good rain and a pretty mild winter.

“It means we have this significant body of dead, dry grass in regional areas and with the hot weather we see this time of year it spells very clear fire dangers.”

Mr Gillespie said the best thing people can do is look at the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) website to obtain their bushfire survival plan and follow the prompts.

On high fire danger days or windy days, make sure you when you are working outdoors to look at your surroundings and have a bucket of water nearby, so that if your equipment starts a fire you can put it out quickly.

“This will give you and your family knowledge on what to do in preparation for the bushfire season and if a bushfire approaches your property,” he said.

“Don’t forget your fourlegged friends, including dogs and horses on your property.

“On high fire danger days or windy days, make

sure when you are working outdoors to look at your surroundings and have a bucket of water nearby, so that if your equipment starts a fire you can put it out quickly.”

Mr Gillespie said owners of properties should look at their surroundings now to identify potential bushfire risks to rectify.

“Have a fire plan, have fire breaks around your property, make sure they are clear and traversable and can stop a fire should it come in from a neighbouring property,” he said.

“Get to know who your local fire warden is and your local rural fire brigade, and if you’re fit and able, go and

join them because if your property catches fire it will be your neighbours and community that come to help.

“You can also get your local fire warden to come out and have a look at your property to give you advice if you’re unsure because an ounce of prevention is far better than a cure.”

Lights on the Hill convoy returns The Lights on the Hill memorial convoy will makes its way to Gatton once more on the weekend.

The event honours the drivers who have lost their lives but also honours the men and women of the transport industry who have been carrying the country through this pandemic.

The convoy weekend is the largest of its kind in Queensland.

It gives the families of drivers who have paid the ultimate sacrifice an opportunity to socialise with their loved one’s mates and make the wider community aware of the devastating losses the transport industry faces daily.

Crime Stoppers member Janice Holstein encourages locals to get their teams together and start planning their best German costumes.

“It’s a lot more fun if you do.”

Prizes on offer at the night are in keeping with the theme, with German beer, wine and Schulte’s wurst up for grabs.

“There will also be prizes for best dressed team, best dressed gent and best dressed lady,” Cr Holstein said.

German themed prizes are up for grabs at Lockyer Valley Crime Stoppers’ Oktoberfest trivia Night.

The funds from Crime Stoppers activities go toward Crime Stoppers Queensland and any additional funds are used for local initiatives.

Campdraft for kids A campdraft to raise money for kids was a ‘fantastic’ success on Saturday.

Organiser Keith Williamson said he was blown away by the support received for the Tenthill Charity Campdraft.

“Everything worked out really well… it was magic,” he said.

There were 50 riders on the day with over 160 runs completed.

Mr Williamson said people were incredibly generous with their donations for Act for Kids.

“One bloke pulled out $500 in notes and said ‘here, this is for the kids,’” he said.

“It blew me away.”

Mr Williamson extended his thanks to all who supported the event and hopes to hold more to raise money for various charities.

Chair’s summary Lockyer Valley Community Consultative Committee

This Chair’s summary provides an overview of the Committee meeting regarding the Gowrie to Helidon (G2H) project’s public exhibition of the Draft Environmental Impact Statement.

The Committee meeting minutes will be published on the Committee webpage following preparation and endorsement by the Committee Chair.

The Chair advised the Committee thoroughly read the somewhat misrepresented Senate inquiry into Inland Rail report, in particular the comments and recommendations on general support for the Project, concerns about community engagement and passenger rail.

Presentations on the draft EIS topics were provided by the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) Inland Rail to the Committee including:

Lookout for Fireweed Lockyer Valley Regional Council is urging landholders to remain vigilant for Fireweed.

Lockyer Valley Environment Portfolio Councillor Michael Hagan said the invasive weed has the potential to severely impact agriculture in the region if it’s not removed from pastures.

“The Lockyer Valley is such a strong agricultural area responsible for the supply of a large percentage of Australia’s fruit, vegetable and livestock production,” he said.

“Fireweed has a distinctive 13-petal yellow flower that can rapidly reproduce more than 10,000 seeds during a growing season, so awareness and attention to detail is extremely important.”

Boost to online food sales Government funding is helping Ipswich and Toowoomba business to upskill producers and suppliers in e-commerce and support agriculture jobs.

Member for Ipswich Jennifer Howard said e-commerce was rapidly expanding.

“This program is all about helping our primary producers connect with their customers because that means support for jobs,” she said.

“We want to see local agri-food companies attracting even more domestic buyers by selling online.”

She said the Government was partnering with Toowoomba Food Leaders Australia and the Ipswich Food and Agribusiness Network to help companies

harness the change.

Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries and Minister for Rural Communities Mark Furner said the initiative followed a report into Queensland agriculture e-commerce and the current level of participation, barriers and opportunities.

“The Department of Agriculture and Fisheries used the findings to design this ‘Growing Online E-commerce Capability of Queensland Agri-food Companies Pilot Project’,” Mr Furner said.

“The agri-food companies participating in this first project produce goods that are well suited to e-commerce, such as premium meats, dairy, fruit, vegetables and honey.”

Reformed labour scheme cuts red tape A streamlined process to Australia’s labour mobility programs was announced by the federal government on September 14, promising less ‘red tape’ to better meet regional workforce needs.

The Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme was established so employers can apply to join the Pacific Labour Scheme (PLS) and the Seasonal Worker Program (SWP) in a single application.

The reform was welcomed

by AUSVEG CEO Michael Coote, who said the single application process makes it easier and less burdensome for growers to access workers through these programs. “[The] announcement is welcome recognition that streamlining the application process for these programs and reducing a little red tape will enhance the programs for the benefit of approved employers

and workers,” he said.

Mr Coote said the vegetable industry welcomed the government announcement, as these programs had been vital for growing businesses all over Australia to secure workers to harvest, pack and distribute crops.

Zed Seselja, Minister for International Development and the Pacific, said the announcement is the first phase of reforms to the PLS and SWP, with further measures to address portability and red tape to be announced later this year.

“These changes will deliver immediate improvements, including expanded access to Pacific workers for new and existing employers,” the statement read.

The changes will support the Australian Government’s commitment to bring an additional 12,500 workers to Australia by March next year, with 27,000 workers already in the workready pool.

The SWP and PLS have become more aligned and flexible so they can better respond to the needs of employers and workers, including: l Allowing PLS workers to

be recruited in more locations across regional Australia by reducing postcode restrictions to better align with the SWP; l Increasing the validity period for labour market testing from 6 months to 12 months, reducing red tape for employers; and l Doubling recruitment caps for SWP approved employers with a good record that also have financial capacity to support additional worker arrivals.

Toyota is preparing to launch its new LandCruiser 300 Series in October.

Information from dealership sources confirms earlier speculation that October was firming as the month the new generation four-wheel drive would hit showrooms after a social media post suggested that, ‘LandCruiser coming October 2021′. It is understood with certainty that some buyers can expect to take ownership of their new 300 Series in early October.

Next week 300yds BOWLS TOOGOOLAWAH BOWLS CLUB NEWS Thursday 23rd September Gerrit Winkeler, Kim Dorman, Tom Allen and Robert Griffin went to Yarraman for their Pub Day. One win and a second but a very enjoyable day was had by all. Thanks, Yarraman for the invite.

Also, on Thursday at home we only had 4 players who enjoyed a pairs game. Winners were Cindy Mills and Neville Finlay who defeated Colleen Heath and Phil Gregory.

On Saturday 25th September we had 5 families turn out for our School Holidays Family Bowls Fun Day. All had a great day enjoying our sport of choice. Hopefully it may encourage them to return for more fun on the greens.

On Sunday 26th October two B Grade Championship Games were played in which, Len Smyth (25) def. John Greany (23) and Ian Bradow (27) def. Wayne Thompson (21). Also played were one game of pairs and one triples game. Winners on the day were Cindy Mills and Brian Loveland.

Runners up were Phil Gregory, Lyn McWhirter and Viv Anderton. Raffle went to Linda Winkeler.

Draw for our Men’s Singles A Grade Championships was made. Gerrit Winkeler v Keith McWhirter and Len Smyth v John Greany. First Round Byes go to Ian Bradow and Wayne Thompson.

On Sunday 3rd October Brian Loveland will host his Annual Charity Day. Please note that all names must be in by 10.30 for a 11.00am start. As per past years this should be a great day out for a worthy cause.

Our next Pub Day will be held on 5th October. Our next scheduled club meeting will be held on Sunday 12th of October. All members are encouraged to attend and put forward any suggestions they may have in respect to the running of our club.

Bell Coach of the Year FROM PAGE 36 “The whole side joined together online from their phones to do fitness sessions, so that was our training leading up to the grand final,” he said.

After enduring heartbreak three years ago in a semi-final loss, Mr Bell said the journey with the side has been immense.

“They’re all a bit bigger and older now and they pulled it together on the day because we had the odds completely stacked against us,” he said.

“The crowd on grand final day was also amazing, we had

plenty of support and when we scored they went absolutely berserk.”

Mr Bell was named Coach of the Year for the Redbacks at their awards night, after being recognised for not just the win but bridging the gap between the juniors and seniors.

“A lot of our kids, once they get a bit older they move into the city to go to university and whatnot, so we just lose them straight away, but over the last few years we’ve gone from one youth player playing senior footy to 11 of our 15 youth boys playing senior football,” he said.

A SEASON TO REMEMBER The Gatton Redbacks under 16/17 side have capped off a wonderful season after winning the Grand Final 1-0 in the dying stages of the match to defeat West Wanderers against all odds.

Their coach, Jackson Bell, said the side’s grit and determination were the key qualities that saw them lift the trophy, after being forced to miss six games due to COVID lockdowns.

“With COVID and because we were in the lockdown zone we actually missed out on six of our 21 games, while all of our other competitors were still able to play games,” Mr Bell said.

“Those six games were marked down as draws, so we only got one point for each of them.”

To innovate during their lockdown, Mr Bell devised a plan to host training sessions with the squad via virtual zoom sessions online.
