IN A YEAR when things are close to getting back to normal, I would ask everyone to support the Laidley Show this weekend.

The Laidley Show Committee has been the victim of some bad timing, DQG WKLV ZLOO EH WKHLU ÀUVW VKRZ VLQFH 2019.

As we all know the local show season was shut down in 2020 by COVID. Most shows started again last year except for Laidley who were the victim of a three-day lockdown.

Just as they were gearing up to celebrate their 2021 show, after spending a lot of money and setting up for a huge event, the dreaded lockdown reared its ugly head.

They did run a programme, but it was all at no cost to the spectator.

The committee and its volunteers are due for some good luck and as the show kicks off this weekend we hope for great weather and huge crowds.

With the kids on school holidays this is the perfect opportunity to get them out of the house and let them burn off some energy.

With heaps of new rides, Dino Encounters and full contact medieval combat there’s plenty to do, and with all the traditional show displays on offer there is also plenty to see.

The committee would really love your support this weekend for a show three years in the making.

Flood mitigation follow-up AS A follow up to my letter UH ÁRRG PLWLJDWLRQ , VHQW emails to various govt. authorities to inquire as to what measures they were WDNLQJ WR FRPPHQFH ÁRRG mitigation works.

Emails were sent to LVRC, our local state member, and our federal member Scott Buchholz.

The best response came from Scott Buchholz’s RIÀFH ZKRVH VHFUHWDU\ contacted us, and after a lengthy conversation said, that Federal Flood relief money was allocated by the Scott Morrison Government, prior to the last election and that Scott Buchholz would contact LVRC. An engineer did contact me by phone, and after a long chat he steered us toward the QLD Recovery Authority which I duly contacted, they gave us contact names within LVRC who we spoke to and set up an appointment with their engineer.

The engineer visited us in Laidley.

He explained and showed us detailed maps and told use of future plans to widen and deepen the gully/drain in Laidley, incorporating bridge upgrade work in Patrick

Street.

The bridge upgrade has been on the State Govt. table for a long time with nothing done.

He also advised that the creeks needed cleaning/ maintenance which is the responsibility of the Dept.of Environment/ Waterways. The engineer said that the bottom line is funding which can be intermittent and that we all need to do our bit if we are WR VHH UHDO ÁRRG PLWLJDWLRQ in our valley.

This means that the man RQ WKH VWUHHW LQÁXHQWLDO people, farmers and business owners need to write letters/emails, phone calls

to politicians at all level of Government, and for media to keep the pressure on to get the funding or we will be pushed onto the back burner until the QH[W ÁRRG Remember that the squeaky wheel gets the oil.

I hope that by writing this we can motivate people and Government agencies, to help us save this beautiful place we call home.

Deb, Jim and Jim weigh in on QLD state budget

STATE budget announcements on Tuesday June 21 included increased funding for hospitals, mental health and small businesses, but some local state members took issue with allocations.

Member for Nanango Deb Frecklington said she was disappointed with the 2.6% roads budget allocated to the Somerset region.

“I understand the demand for populations on the coast, but to think that Somerset region only gets that 2.6%, it’s actually a real kick in the guts,” Mrs Frecklington said.

“We’ve got some of the most critically important roads in the Brisbane Valley Highway and the D’Aguilar Highway in my electorate.

Mrs Frecklington was however grateful for funding to mental health and for

school halls in Kilcoy and Toogoolawah.

“I’m certainly welcoming and very pleased to any funding towards mental KHDOWK ,¶P \HW WR VHH LW ÀRZ through to my community though.”

Member for Lockyer Jim McDonald said the budget will waste money on southeast Queensland union-led projects with less allocated to upgrades to the road network.

“We’re grateful for any money we get but we want to see, and we’ll continue WR ¿JKW IRU XSJUDGHV WR RXU roads and road network,” Mr McDonald said.

“They spend hundreds of millions of dollars on VROXWLRQV WR WUD൶F FRQJHVWLRQ in Brisbane that gets people home ten minutes earlier which we recognise is nice, but we’re talking about

Five charged during Laidley homicide investigation

POLICE arrested two men, two women and a 16-yearold boy over the murder of a 48-year-old Laidley man on Monday night, June 20.

The man was located by police at 9:50pm at a house on Patrick Street with a number of critical stabbing injuries, he died later at the scene. $ ÀUH ZDV GHOLEHUDWHO\ OLW LQ the house and extinguished by emergency crews.

Detectives commenced a homicide investigation over the night.

Two 19-year-old Laidley women, a 19-year-old Caboolture man and a 24-yearold College View man were arrested Tuesday night, June 21, and charged with one count each of murder, attempted murder and arson.

A 16-year-old Leichhardt boy was arrested on Wednesday night, June 22 with the same charges.

Learning to lead by example

LUCAS Spencer spent the day shadowing Lockyer Valley Regional Council Mayor Tanya Milligan on Thursday June 16, gaining an inside look at local government and leadership.

“There’s a lot of time and H൵RUW WKDW JRHV LQWR MXVW about everything they do,” Lucas said.

“It’s furthered my understanding of how it’s actually run. ³,W¶V QRW MXVW RQH SHUVRQ making the decision.”

The grade 11 Lockyer District High School student said he hoped to become a WHDFKHU DLGH DIWHU ¿QLVKLQJ school.

“And if I like that later on, going into teaching,” he said.

Lucas said he could use

his own school experience to help others.

“For a bit at school I wasn’t the best student,” he said.

“I feel like I’d be able to relate to the kids that don’t want to be there or are struggling and I could help them push through and see the good in it.”

From his day with Cr Milligan, the most important lesson he will take with him had nothing to do with government.

“It’s that family are the most important people in your life,” he said.

“Just be nice, really.

“She’s always polite and you go down the street and she says hello to people she GRHVQ¶W HYHQ NQRZ MXVW FDXVH it’s the right thing to do.

“It’s been a good day.”

Landscape artist of over 50 years Lawrie Smith AM said his presentations on ‘Bush Tucker and Other Useful Plants’ would teach people about native plants

species used by aboriginal people and early settlers.

“It’s an amazing win-win situation to plant natives,” Mr Smith said.

“You’ll notice an incredible increase in activity in your garden of our native wildlife.”

Mr Smith said he was excited to teach people about rare and unusual Australia plants.

“My whole career as a landscape architect has been about bringing the wonder and the wealth of the plant material of Australia to the general community so they can appreciate where we live.”

Brisbane Valley Kilcoy Landcare (BVKL) secretary Sue Cawcutt said the attendees would be tapping into one of the most knowl-

edgeable people around.

“This is one of the most awarded native plants experts that they’ll get the chance to hear from.”

The BVKL event will include two presentations and light refreshments featuring bush tucker ingredients, book via Eventbrite - $5 donation requested on arrival.

Bridging the cultural gap, Gatton

Walloon kids paint their dreams ART was put front and centre for Walloon State School at their second annual art exhibition on June 23.

School principal Lisa Noonan said the exhibition was an opportunity for the school to showcase its choir, dance troupe and, of course, visual art.

“Most schools do sports really well but the arts side of it is just as important,” Mrs Noonan said.

Local artist Celestine Stokes judged each class for the most creative piece.

“I love that Walloon State School is doing this at this age,” she said.

“I’m also a teacher and art usually comes last on the list, so I’m very excited to see an art show at a school.”

Steward of Needlework and Craft Olwen Luck said anyone can bring their craft projects along.

“If it’s not in the schedule, it doesn’t matter,” she

said.

“Bring it along and we’ll ÀQG D SODFH IRU LW µ Along with the usual quilts, patchwork, and machine sewing, new crafts like Diamond Dotz have become popular and anything that falls under the broad banner of ‘craft’ is welcome to exhibit.

“Bring your stuff along for other people’s enjoyment,” Mrs Luck said.

Mrs Luck said she hoped more teenagers and children entered this year.

“We’re hoping to see all our regulars return and some new faces, because there are a lot of new people in the area,” she said.

Needlework and craft return to this year’s show show, and anyone with a crafty skill is encouraged to exhibit.

With 20 classes, in pro/ amateur, amateur, and children’s sections, it is a section anyone with a camera can have a go at.

“Just do it, just go for it,” Ms Teese said.

“You never know if you’re JRLQJ WR EH ÀUVW VHFRQG RU third.”

As well as all the classes you expect, like sunrise DQG VXQVHW ÁRZHUV DQG portraits, there are two new classes this year: panorama and journalism.

Ms Teese, a passionate wildlife photographer, hopes her expectations are exceeded.

“Let’s hope that there are a lot more than I expect,” she said.

“I’d like there to be about 300 photographs to put up.”

THE horticulture section is set to be a riot of greenery and colour.

Chief steward of horticulture Toni Watson said she was looking forward to a bumper number of entries.

“In 2019 we were still at the end of the drought so we had very few entries,” she said.

“We’re really hoping with the wet weather that

people have got lots of plants to show this time.”

Ferns, aspidistras, geraniums, pansies, and arrangements will be on display, plus a new smaller addition.

“We’re hoping to have some bonsais,” Ms Watson said.

“I’d also like to thank all of our sponsors...from Laidley business district and also Plainland.”

CHIEF steward Anthony Dudley is bringing his ute show experience to Laidley show to make the event bigger and better.

“I’ve successfully run Toowoomba and Kingaroy for the past two years,” he said.

There are three new categories this year to bring in more competitors.

“I’ve introduced three new categories to try and bring in a few more people, called the ‘ute with a boot’ categories,” Mr Dudley said.

“’Ute with a boot’ is anything that’s not a ute.”

The sections are open to stations wagon and sedan owners keen to show off their wheels.

Mr Dudley’s main aim is to bolster the numbers and make sure everyone has a good time.

“You want to make the event big and the main thing is making it enjoyable for everyone,” he said.

“It’s all about coming in and catching up with your friends.”

Resilience workshop plans for future

BY JACOB HAYDEN HEALTHY Land & Water, in conjunction with severDO government agencies, hosted grazing business resilience planning workshops last week in Toogoolawah, Gatton and Boonah.

The workshops provided information and resources on Queensland’s new drought reform measures, and how Farm Business Resilience Plans are a key requirement for accessing drought preparedness grants and drought ready and recovery assistance.

Healthy Land and Water (HL&W) principal scientist and regional agriculture landcare facilitator Bruce Lord said the session provided a holistic look at farmer’s businesses, including their ¿QDQFHV ODQG SURGXFWLRQ system and people.

The workshops covered a range of issues like climate change, markets, biosecurity and production systems.

“There’s some impetus behind assisting landholders develop documented resilience plans for their businesses so

they’re better able to prepare for, manage and recover from drought.”

The workshop is a joint ef-

fort between the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (QDAF) and Healthy Land & Water.

Mr Lord said HL&W has had great support from other agencies in the space like the Queensland Rural and Industry Development Authority (QRIDA).

“They manage some of the drought management and sustainability loans which landholders can apply for once they’ve got a farm business resilience plan,” he said.

“We are strongly encouraging all landholders to have a farm business resilience plan.

“It’s their plans, we’re not telling them what they should put in their plan, but just facilitating it so they identify the things they need to work on.”

Mr Lord said a lot of the information from the workshops is available to online.

Champ bowlers descend on Gatton THE CHAMPION of Champion Pairs competition held last weekend invited 12 teams from the Darling Downs Bowls Association (DDBA) to Gatton to duke it out for the winning title.

Laidley Bowls Club defeated South Toowoomba 21-18 in the VHPL ¿QDO DQG :HVW 7RRZRRPED LQ WKH ¿QDO ZLQQLQJ WKH tournament.

Bowlers Doug McGuire and Damien McGill will now go on to represent Laidley and the DDBA

against the Cunningham district in August.

Locally trained horse wins Gatton Cup

HOSTAGE of War won the 2022 TAB Gatton Cup with a superb front running performance.

Trained on the track by Brenton Andrew and owned locally, Hostage of War carried jockey Les Tilley DW NJ, started favourite, jumped from the barrier, and was never headed in the run.

For Tilley it was two in a row after riding Helluva Babe to victory in the 2021 TAB Gatton Cup. Hostage of War beat the Lindsay Hatch-trained Better Ethics’ second while The Minivan trained by Matt
