HERE AT the Glenore Grove QCWA we are often asked, what do we do? As we also get support from our community – those who attend our fundraising events and buy from our stalls and sausage sizzle, this small article is an update for you. Our year started off with a bang – we won the esteemed Australia Day LVRC Community Organisation of the Year Award. We are very proud of this achievement. This year so far, we have supplied community grocery shops of $250 each, to the Laidley and Gatton Community Centres. We have just recently paid for 2 students from the Glenore Grove State School to go to camp this

Will Energex stay in Esk?
BY JACOB HAYDEN
THE FUTURE of the Esk Energex Depot has reached a critical moment following Somerset Regional Council’s (SRC) rejection of a Development Application proposed by Energex for a new site at Highland Street, 500 metres from the existing site.
An unprecedented crowd members visited the Kilcoy Information Centre on Wednesday June 21 ahead of SRC’s ordinary meeting to support the application.
ETU assistant secretary Stuart Traill said the current depot at 13 Highland Street was a health risk with the threat of asbestos looming.
“These workers cannot continue to work in a depot that’s riddled with asbestos, the moment there’s any airborne asbestos that depot needs to be demolished,” Mr Traill said.
“There’s no commitment that if we can’t keep the depot in Esk that it will stay
in the Somerset region.”
SRC Mayor Graeme Lehmann said it was ‘regrettable’ that Council had to refuse the application but the chosen location in Highland Street, Esk was unsuitable.
“The proposed location is on residential land and council must consider impacts on visual and scenic amenity,
Cr Lehmann said.
“The reality is the site simply didn’t meet the requirements of our planning scheme, or the State Government planning scheme so our hands are tied.”
Mr Traill said it was frustrating to reach this point after three years of consultation.
“Instead of putting hurdles and giving us the false belief that this DA was going to get
approved two or three years ago, we should have been location,” he said.
Adjacent property owner Grahame Rackley was one of several residents who submitted objections to council.
“We only purchased our property 12 months ago and it did not come up in any of the searches that there was a DA
there,” Mr Rackley said.
“They didn’t address any of the issues council raised in their proposal… every time they came back it was half answered.”
An Energex spokesperson said the proposed location was chosen for its size and quick access to the highway.
“We will now be required to investigate all possible options to ensure the community continues to receive the our crews provide on a daily basis and in times of emergency,” they said.
Councillor Kylee Isidro listed an item for future meetings, requesting SRC to further engage with Energexpriate site.
Mr Traill said he appreciated SRC’s commitment.
“I think it’s a positive step in the right direction to get around the table with all the relevant stakeholders to trycial outcome to keep the Esk

Distinguished entomologist remembered
LONG-TERM Gatton
resident, Dr Errol Hassan (March 15, 1935 – June 27, 2022), is being remembered as an incredible entomologist and educator, who made many contributions to the Australian and overseas agricultural communities.
On the one-year anniversary of his passing, Errol Hassan is also celebrated as an irreplaceable husband, dear father, fun-loving Dede, brother, son, uncle, and friend.
In paying tribute to Errol, his family held a ‘Celebration of Life’ memorial service at the Lockyer Valley Cultural Centre, Lake Apex, on October 22, 2022.
Family, friends, the Gatton farming community, present and former University of Queensland (UQ) Gatton College colleagues, and past and present students all remembered fondly the extraordinary life Errol lived, his warmth and kindness, and everything he achieved professionally.
Flags from Turkey, Germany and Australia were backdrops to the memory tables that displayed the many and varied aspects of Errol’s personal and professional life, including his vast insect entomology reference books his homeland Cyprus, his cooking, and cherished family mementos.
Guests enjoyed traditional Turkish mezze (using recipes
from the Hassan’s), and Australian delights catered and made by Fiona Smith and her team at Colonial Catering.
In keeping with Turkish customs, all guests were gifted with Turkish Delight and a Turkish Evil Eye (an bad energy).
Overall, Errol’s ‘Celebration of Life’ service was a who dedicated his life and working career to serve and help others.
ERROL ACHIEVED MUCH DURING HIS LONG AND VARIED LIFE:
Adjunct Associate Professor in Entomology and Plant Protection over a 49-year career at UQ Gatton College.
Dedicated and engaging lecturer and research mentor to many undergraduate and higher degree postgraduate students (even across family generations), until March 2022.
Instrumental in setting up, storing, and curating UQ Gatton’s extensive insect and Wrote and published papers and book chapters.
In 2019, he discovered a new insect species in the USA, that he named in his wife’s honour to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary.
Dr Hassan’s contribution to entomology worldwide has been recognized by colleagues who have named
insect species after him, such as the wasps, Epitranus hassani sp. and Megastigmus erolhasani
Throughout his life, Dr Hassan developed many close friendships, and personal and professional associations.
He worked with farming communities throughout Queensland, helped Gatton growers, local gardeners to identify insects and pests, and agricultural groups overseas.
He was both well liked and highly respected.
Dr Hassan’s warm and cheerful smile, generosity, and passion for all things insects has left an indelible mark on the lives of many.
Importantly, Errol was a family man.
He was a committed and faithful husband to Ursula (Kessi) for more than 50 years.
He was also a proud, loving, and devoted father to his three daughters.
However, his most favourite role was being Dede to his four beautiful grandchildren.
Errol’s deep-rooted love will live in his family’s hearts forever.

New leader for Esk Lions
BY GRACE CRICHTON
LIONS Club of Esk passed the torch to its new president last week.
The club held its change over dinner on Monday June 19 at Stonehouse Retreat and installed Cameron Wyatt as its new president.
Toni Skott takes on the roles of secretary and treasurer and Ken Sippel continues in his role as vice president.
Mr Wyatt takes the reigns from outgoing president Anne Henry who, alongside her husband Pat, have been Lions members for eight years.
“We have worked hard for the Lions and we’ve seen many changes,” Mrs Henry said.
“I had a huge list of things when I became president of things I thought I could do.”
Mr Wyatt said his ‘to-do’ list was a continuation of the past president’s, all centred around community.

“I don’t think it’s ever been more important,” he said.
“Each of us can think of some small thing that we can do to check on someone, to check in with someone, to even check in with ourselves.
“And we should start by
being good neighbours to the other clubs that are close.
“There’s some really good work that can happen there.”
The Lions Club of Esk was joined by members from Fernvale and Lowood clubs, volunteers from the op shop, and councillors.

Drink around two litres of water a day, limit caffeine drinks and replace with herbal teas.
Eat at least two pieces of fruit and three vegetables (leafy greens in particular) each day and add garlic, ginger and turmeric in cooking.
Exercise regularly - walking is awesome, aim for at least four days a week. Get enough rest, around 8 hours of sleep a night. Diffuse essential oils to promote calmness, boost energy and cleanse our living areas.
Citrus, lemongrass, and clove are great oils to diffuse over winter. Keep our homes clean by wiping down benchtops, door handles, whitegoods daily.
Get a little fresh air and sunlight each day. These tips will help all our family stay healthy over winter.

Think of water with Plainland business
BY JACOB HAYDEN
ARE YOU thinking what I’m thinking?
I’m thinking about going to Think Water Plainland’s grand opening this Friday and Saturday June 30 and July 1.
The independently owned franchise opened its doors on Tuesday May 2 with a warm welcome from the community.
Owner Matt Thompson said the business had ‘really picked up’, for what is meant to be the quiet time of the year.
“We do pool testing and lawn care products and there’s a lot of people in the area that either have both or at least one of those as a requirement,” he said.
Think Water Plainland is already working with local governments to further its service to community, and is excited for future prospects.
Mr Thompson said sports turf irrigation was his specialty, with a history of
work on major golf courses and stadiums, including the Gabba and Suncorp.

New cattle compeition Rosewood will be buzzing 2023
On Friday June 30 and Saturday July 1 the showgrounds will be buzzing with all the entertainment, competition, displays, and fun you’ve come to expect from the local show.
Rosewood Show Society president Paddy Lenihan said the popular bull ride would return on Friday night.
Over in the equestrian ring, there is a new section especially for former racehorses.
“We’ve got another section past racehorses that Queensland Racing are promoting this year,” Paddy said.
“We’ve still got all our normal horse event, including the Gordon McGeary Challenge.”
Saturday will feature all your show favourites from sideshow alley and food vans, to plenty of poultry, horticulture, cattle com-
arts, and schoolwork displays.
“And the pavilions and the chooks and the feathered friends, they’ll all be there,” Paddy said. plenty to see and do.
“We’ve got pig races, we’ve got dog jumping, you name it, we’ve
got it,” Paddy said. Head on down the Rosewood Showgrounds and enjoy one of the best days out in town.
“Come out and support it, you’d be surprised what you see there,” Paddy said.
“A lot of people put a lot of
hard work in, it’s a very small committee and they all try their best to put on a bit of a show for the local community.
“Come down and meet the people you haven’t seen for a while, have a beer at the bar, and watch a bit of entertainment.”
KICKING off at 12pm on Friday, the Elizabeth Boughen Memorial Youth Challenge is judged on a combination of Young Judges, Young Paraders, and herdsmanship.
The individual award is given to a junior and senior entrant with the highest combined points across the two competitions as well as for showing exemplary herdsmanship.
A school prize will also be awarded to the school that wins the most points based on herdsmanship, and the average score of all students across the Young Judges and Paraders competitions.
Herdsmanship is judged on animal welfare, presentation and overall conduct and attitude.
The inaugural challenge is in honour of the late Elizabeth Boughen who passed away in January this year after battling an autoimmune disease.
Liz was a passionate local cattle breeder and judge, and a previous Rosewood Show Rural Ambassador.

BY JESSE HAMILTON
THE ROSEWOOD Show is returning this Friday June 30 and Saturday July 1.
The two-day event will kick from 9am Friday, with Sideshow day and a bull riding event taking place from 5pm.
The show’s second day will feature all day pig races, reptile demonstrations, pony rides, and an animal nursery also running throughout the day.
There will be a Rooftop Exhorse riders.
Saturday night entertainment will also feature the ‘Dash for Cash’ and Queensland band Route 33 will keep the party going.
Rosewood Show entertainment
manager Cassie Seppanen said the committee made sure the show was better each year.
“I think one thing our committee is very good at is assessing what works and what doesn’t
and looking at what we can do to make our show better each year,” she said.
SEE expert horsemanship in action and maybe bring home some cash too, as ‘Dash for Cash’ returns to the Rosewood Show on Saturday night.
Rosewood Show Society president Paddy Lenihan said the cut-out competition would be an entertaining event and a chance for the crowd to get involved.
“We take about 20 competitors and they go through a round,” he said.
“The idea is to pick one beast out of a mob of cows, get it to the front, show that you can control the beast and get it outside.
“The judge will give you a score then we’ll take a top ten or top six.
“We’ll run a calcutta for the general public to buy the horse that they think will win.”
The lucky winner will take home a share of the prize money.
“The crowd can get involved and put their hand in their pocket, have a punt, and hopefully they can pick the one that wins it,” Paddy said.
Dash for Cash is planned for 6pm on Saturday night.
Don’t miss seeing this Queensland top country duo on stage
ROUTE 33 will keep the party going as Saturday night’s entertainment at the Rosewood Show.
The Queensland-based country duo, comprised of Jock Barnes and Trent McArdle, have been playing together for more than a decade and are now an ARIA #1 Australian Country charting act.
in November 2016, Route 33 have been featured on lineups at CMC Rocks, Tamworth Country Music Festival, Gympie Music Muster and Groundwater Country Music Festival.
In 2016, ‘Last First Kiss’ was the iTunes Country Chart. Their debut album ‘The Switch’, from which the single was lifted, went to #6 on the ARIA Australian Country Album Chart, demonstrating that Route 33 had arrived.
Their next album three years later, ‘Coro Drive’, proved to be an outstanding collection of modern country-pop tracks, and genre that the pair grew up on.
In 2020, they took to the stu-

dio, writing and recording tracks they started releasing throughout 2021.
The singles quickly gained traction in the charts and new fans following them to festivals such as Groundwater Country Music Festival, Savannah in the Round and NQ Rockin Country. With effortlessly catchy tracks, good-time personalities, infectious energy on stage, and a knack for crowd interaction, this duo feels bound for success.
Don’t miss your chance to see Route 33 perform live at the Rosewood Show on July 1.

Greyhounds to be judged on looks, not speed
BY JACOB HAYDEN
THE ROSEWOOD Showgrounds will be packed to the brim with man’s best friend on Friday June 30, 9am with the dog showing competition.
ever, on Saturday July 1
Rosewood will also host the Racing Greyhound Sweepstakes, with racing, retired, and pet greyjudged on their looks and not their speed.
Dog section chief steward Adrienne Holzapfel was excited to see the greyhounds introduced to Rosewood Show and encouraged people to interact
with the big, beautiful animals.
“They’re going to have some there for people to have a pat and interact with,” Mrs Holzapfel said.
“They are a big breed but they’re really loving, they’re a beautiful dog.”
Mrs Holzapfel said she hoped visitors might even consider adopting greyhounds through the experience, like her own cousin did recently.
“It wasn’t a breed they were thinking of, but they gave it a go and now they’re hooked,” she said.
Mrs Holzapfel encouraged dog lovers to visit and mingle with like-minded people.
“It’s a social day out for
you and your dog, that’s what dog shows are,” she said.
“That’s why I like going to them, because you get to go out and spend your day with people who love dogs.
“There’s breeds there people will never have seen, and there’s always new breeds coming into the country.”
For those who have not shown before, this is your chance to learn how to handle dogs and learn from experienced breeders and presenters.
“Someone who can put naughty dog into something pretty special.”
Dog jumping display at the Rosewood Show
DOG lovers will have the opportunity to display the talents of their canines at this year’s show, with the popular dog jumping display returning on Saturday.
The crowd favourite section will have dogs competing in three different heats throughout the day, with cash prizes to be won for the highest jumping dogs.
Rosewood Show entertainment manager Cassie Seppanen said the contest was good entertainment for anyone participating or just wanting to watch.
“We’re putting that in the main arena so lots of people can watch it,” she said.
“Whoever jumps the highest, they go up in increments, so once all the dogs pass a certain height, they go to the next peak.”

Make a plan to curb feral cat and fox populations
THE CENTRE for Invasive Species Solutions (CISS) have release two new planning guides to better equip communities across Australia against feral cats and foxes.
CISS national feral cat and fox management coordinator Gillian Basnett feral cat and fox populations were ‘huge’.
“It’s estimated that the number of feral cats ranges seasonally from 1.4 and 5.6 million, and the number of foxes is steady at about 1.7 million,” she said.
The invasive animals threaten native animals and spread disease among wildlife and livestock.
Feral cats spread toxoplasmosis which can infect any animal or bird.
“Together with another disease, Sarcocystis, toxoplasmosis spread by feral cats is estimated to cost farmers more than $12 million a year,” Ms Basnett said.
“Throw in predation by foxes and you add a further $28 million in costs a year.”
Ms Basnett has found there is huge community interest in controlling feral cats and foxes.
The new Planning Guide for Feral Cat Management in Australia and its companion, the Planning Guide for Fox Management in Australia have been written to help land managers, community

groups, pest control professional, biosecurity organisations and others ask the right questions and their circumstances and resources.
“A useful plan doesn’t need to be long and complicated,” Ms Basnett said.
“People might want to bait, shoot and trap, or invest in exclusion fencing, or habitat improvements and rabbit control. It depends on what they can commit to and what works for them,” Ms Basnett said.

LOCKYER Valley Regional Council endorsed changes to fees and charges for Laidley Saleyards in its ordinary meeting on Wednesday June 21.
Yard fees for cattle will go up to $7 from $5 per head.
Calves will stay at $4 per head.
The fees for pigs, sheep, and goats, have been discontinued, as the current infrastructure at the Laidley Saleyards does not accommodate the sale of these animals.
The per head fee for horses has increased from $5 to $10.
Agent’s fee per sale has increased from $517.05 to $750.
Dipping fees remain at $3 per head but the minimum charge has increased from $174.25 to $220.
The council report noted all fees were ‘reviewed against other nearby saleyards fees and adjusted accordingly and reviewed by the Saleyards User Group in May and found to be appropriate’.
The fees are effective from July 1.

Wild Dog Control Program
Somerset Regional Council are conducting a wild dog baiting program throughout Somerset in an effort to control the wild dog problem. Important information when baiting with 1080:
• Baiting can be carried out within 5km of a town. Prior approval from an authorised Council officer is required, increased risk mitigation and conditions apply.
• Baits cannot be laid within 50m of a roadway or within 5m of a boundary fence.
• Notification of 72 hours must be given to all adjoining neighbours (including across roadways).
• An authority to sign form is required if obtaining baits for another person.
• You must supply your rates notice.
• Unconsumed baits are to be retrieved within seven days and destroyed.

10 July Kilcoy Showgrounds, 7.30am-9am
10 July Middle Creek, Bryden, 10.30am-12pm

Winners on the day were Len Smyth and Reg Hanson. Runners up were Dot McVeigh, Linda Hanson and Melissa who kindly helps Robert. Luckily on the day the fruit and veg tray supplied by our own IGA was redrawn after young Phil the original winner kindly put it back up for a lucky winner.
Whether you are a resident or visitor to Toogoolawah, an experienced bowler or not, you are welcome to join us for a game. Novice players are given s to ensure that they enjoy their game. Come along and get some exercise, meet new people, enjoy a bit of fun and a social afternoon. We have bowls of all sizes for you to use.
For the Calendar:
1. Our next Club Meeting will be held on Sunday 9th July 2023. All members are invited to attend at 9.00am and to help in the running of the club by participating in discussions.
2. Players are required for away games to ensure that we balance Home and Away attendance. Please contact Gerrit on 5424 2569 if you would like to be included in the roster for 2023.

THE BRISBANE Valley Rail Trail Users Association (BVRTUA) hosted the BVRT E2E (end to end) cycling challenge on Saturday June 24, with more than 100 cyclists taking on the timed challenge.
BVRTUA president and event organiser Paul Heymans said 119 cyclists began the trek at 6:30am in Wulkuraka, Ipswich.
Cyclists then travelled uphill 160km to Yarraman at the end of the BVRT, with within the 10 hour limit.
“It’s quite a hard ride, and the climb up from Linville to Benarkin is a long, long 18km of uphill when you’ve just done 100km,” Heymans
