[Congratulations also] Lockyer Member Jim McDonald who has also worked hard to have this matter brought to a resolution.

Services volunteers spend countless hours working to help our communities. There are many things that we can do to help them and ensure that we all are as safe as possible.

A key step that we can take is to build our own personal and community resilience.

Gatton locals Kerry Steele and Rachelle Smith, from respective Lockyer businesses Steelenation Home Maintenance and Love and Karma café, secured the winning bid of the day.

LIGHTS on the Hill will mark convoy this weekend in Gatton.

The event is dedicated to the past and present hard-working members of the Australian transport industry and will have convoys departing from Toowoomba and Brisbane on Saturday to arrive at the Gatton Showgrounds at 10:30am.

The best place to watch the convoy is at the showgrounds as they arrive, but if you choose to watch the convoy from the road, do so from at least two metres from the roadside.

Joann and husband Adam said they would look to continue the auction in future years.

“It was really successful and a lot of fun, I would love to continue to do it every year,” she said.

Saturday at the Showgrounds will have live music, food and trade stalls, with a memorial service to follow on Sunday October 1, 10am at Lake Apex to commemorate truckers who have passed. Lights on the Hill president Tim Lowein said it’s a special event for the transport industry.

rescuer Charlie Lewis has shared some tips and tricks for residents to help protect the region’s koalas from becoming functionally extinct.

“There are areas where koalas aren’t breeding because there isn’t the food source or the number of koalas,” Ms Lewis said.

Contributing factors to koala deaths included lack of access to water, dog attacks, and road incidents.

“People are under the illusion that koalas don’t drink water, but they do, they require it, otherwise they end up with kidney failure,” she said.

“If people really want to them a water access that’s safe away from dogs.”

Ballet classes share love of dance with adults

ADVERTORIAL EXPERIENCE the love of dance, no matter your age or experience, at a series of free ballet classes in Gatton.

Starlite Dancers director

Shandelle Reisenleiter is sharing her passion for ballet through a seven-week series of classes for adults.

“I will be teaching the class and some of my senior girls will be demonstrating,” she said.

“It’s for all ages, all abilities, from beginners all the way through.”

Whether you’ve never danced before, or you’re a former ballerina, the classes are your opportunity to engage with the arts and nourish your physical and mental health.

“Just come and enjoy the class, get your feet moving, get your soul engaged,” Shandelle said.

The classes are on at 7pm beginning Tuesday October 3 and run weekly until Tuesday

November 14.

“You don’t have to commit to every class, just turn up,” Shandelle said.

The classes are made possible through a Regional Arts Development Fund grant, which Shandelle said made it possible for the community to experience the art of

dance.

Teaching dance and sharing her passion for the art has always been close to Shandelle’s heart, and she wants with the community.

“It’s always been my passion since a young teenager, but now coming into my

mature womanhood, I’m really engaging with the classical music because it’s very soothing, it’s very calming,” she said.

The classes are at Starlite Dancers studios, Gatton Table Tennis Hall, 9 Woodlands Rd Gatton.

Gallery goes pink

OPEN Door Gallery is going pink for breast cancer awareness month.

Generous local artists, artisans, and crafters have donated pieces for the Lowood art gallery’s ‘In the Pink’ exhibition, taking place in October.

Open Door Galley co-ordinator Yvonne Hawkins said all sales from the exhibition would help those undergoing treatment.

“Any sales will go to breast care nurses at Ipswich Hospital,” she said.

The proceeds will go toward creating care packs, including body moisturisers and coffee vouchers, for

the breast care nurses at Ipswich Hospital to distribute to people undergoing breast cancer treatments.

“There will be different price points as well, something for everyone’s budget,” Mrs Hawkins said.

The exhibition will cumulate on October 21 with drinks and nibblies at the gallery, and remaining artworks to be auctioned off.

The Open Door Gallery is at 45 Railway Street, Lowood and is open on Thursdays and weekends.

Groovy night at Glenore Grove

GLENORE Grove Hall came to life on Saturday night, September 23 for an old time dance, bringing back the memories of many residents’ younger days.

Glenore Grove Hall Committee vice president George Frampton said the night went exceptionally well, with around 75 in attendance and a number towns and regions visiting.

“We’re doing predominantly old-time dances, the kind Lyn [Kerr] taught back in those days, and the dances that would have been at the venues when these people went dancing when they were courting,” Mr Frampton said.

“They should be happy to recall the dances they’d done when they were youngsters.”

The night was a followon event from last year’s

dance in honour of the Kerr family, some of whom attended on Saturday.

“Last year we had an honour night for Lyn Kerr, she taught a lot of these people how to dance when they were young,” Mr Frampton said.

“She ran dance classes throughout the Lockyer Valley.”

Mr Frampton himself has danced for a long time.

“We’ve loved our dancing since we learned to dance when I was 15, and when I got married I said ‘we’re not staying home Saturday nights, we’re going to keep dancing’,” he said.

“We’ve been dancing ever since and it’s been 48 years now.”

Winning Somerset gardens announced

GREEN thumbs abound in the Somerset region, as proven by the 2023 Somerset Garden Competition.

Judges, Somerset Regional Council (SRC) Deputy Mayor Helen Brieschke and Councillor Sean Choat, and Lockyer Valley Regional Councillor Janice Holstein, had a tough job picking winners.

The competition is an annual event organised by SRC and this year is sponsored by Searles Garden Products and The Lockyer and Somerset Independent

Cr Sean Choat said the biggest challenge was getting to see all the gardens and keeping to the itinerary.

“There was so much to see, and we found each one had something of special interest, whether about plants, special features or tricks of the trade,” he said.

“There were moments when judges had to be dragged away from one garden in order to get to the next one.”

Judges weren’t limited to just looking at the gardens.

Cr Choat met his daily intake of vitamin C with homegrown citrus fruit, and judges -

ble nightshade, placing their

trust in the grower it wasn’t the deadly variety.

Cr Brieschke thanked all the garden competition entrants for their dedication and

be in a judge’s position, I thoroughly enjoyed walking through these lovely gardens,” Cr Brieschke said. “It takes skill, time and energy to build and maintain a successful garden, one

that’s beautiful to look at, or particular passion.

“I congratulate everyone who entered, you should all be very proud.”

Entrants and award win-

ners were recognised at a special celebration at Esk on Tuesday September 26. The gardens will be open to the public on October 7 and 8 between 9am and 2pm on both days.

A FAIR SHARE FOR REGIONAL NEWS

Local independent newspapers still connect more than 80% of the country, but currently the commonwealth government invests close to 0% of its advertising budget here.

The federal government could help secure the future of regional news with zero extra cost by simply allocating a fairer share of government advertising to local and regional news services.

One page per week of important government information in regional newspapers would be a great start. This shouldn’t be controversial. It’s a simple and fair solution for the future of regional news.

Calling creatives for golden recording studio experience in Brisbane Valley

AN OPPORTUNITY for local musicians to gain professional experience in a recording studio environment has emerged in the Somerset region.

Record label Montville Lane will host pop-up studio sessions from November 3 to 5 at the Somerset Civic Centre, with eighteen slots available for interested locals.

Montville Lane producer-engineer of 30 years’ experience David Blake encouraged people from all levels of musical expertise to register.

“This opportunity is for anyone in the community that wants to immerse themselves in a professional studio ecosystem,” he said.

“You don’t have to have any technical experience.

“There is also a call out for any aspiring engineer producers that want to come in and

do an internship across the three days with myself.”

The slots will include a recording, mixing and mastering package with an oppor-

tunity for three lucky readers to get their own music video shot and edited - simply mention the Independent in your registration.

MONTVILLE LANE SESSIONS

Mr Blake said the pop up was a great opportunity for locals to network with people in the industry and had great long-term potential.

“There’s potential for the original material, we’ve got some relationships with Music Australia, and feedback would be given through the

A&R department,” he said.

“It gives people access to industry players and professionals they might not otherwise get access to.”

Varroa mite is here to stay

THE ERADICATION of Varroa destructor (varroa mite) is no longer feasible on technical grounds, according to the National Management Group (NMG), the decision-making body for national exotic plant pest and animal disease eradication programmes.

Varroa mites are tiny parasites of honey bees which cause malformation, weaken honey bees and transmit numerous viruses.

The invasive species Newcastle in New South Wales 14 months ago and has cause more than 14,000 hives to be euthanised.

At its September 19 meeting the NMGtion would transition to a management phase, following advice from the

Consultative Committee on Emergency Plant Pests (CCEPP).

The National Farmers Federation Horticulture Council has called on the federal government to respond to the decision.

Council chair Jolyon Burnett said more support for the biosecurity system would be required.

“The Varroa Mite cat is now out of the bag in Australia, and there’s no putting it back in,” Mr Burnett said.

“This is devastating for the apiarists who are now faced with living with a pest that has fundamentally changed the beekeeping industry wherever it has been endemic overseas.”

The NMG will meet again in the coming weeks to consider further advice from the CCEPP.

Searching for the perfect black bull

COLINTON based Ivory Downs Speckle Park (IDSP) broke a world record on September 2, bidding $150,000 on a black Speckle Park bull at the East Coast Select Sale in Kempsey, New South Wales.

IDSP co-owners Stacey and Dale Jones also own the record female, purchased for $100,000 in 2022.

Stacey said the couple were big believers in the breed but were mindful of some misconceived notions.

“My husband was the same, he wasn’t interested in the breed and thought it was a passing fad,” she said.

Stacey recalled Dale suggesting ‘you just like them because they’re pretty’ because of the recognisable trait of their speckled hide, but Stacey persisted.

She said the breed was

had better tasting meat, and higher carcass yield.

“We only got into the breed because Dale went to a sale and bought a couple of loads of Angus heifers that were calved to a Speckle Park bull, just because they were the right price at the right time,” Stacey said.

“When they started calving down I could see his eyes light up, and he followed them with great interest.

“Come weaning time those calves were all at least 30kg heavier than the other breeds we were weaning, from exactly the same conditions.”

Around six years ago, IDSP swapped all bulls out of its 1,200 commercial cattle for pure bred Speckle Park, and later began its stud herd.

IDSP had been on the lookout for a good black bull in Australia for some time to

“In the early days of the breed in Australia the blacks were almost frowned upon because people wouldn’t immediately recognise them as Speckle Park,” Stacey said.

“Now, what’s important for us is getting commercial people to use Speckle Park

animals in their herd and

“When we actually got the catalogue Shady was in we weren’t that interested because in his photo he’s standing a bit upright in the front which makes his shoulder look really big and his

neck quite short.”

However, when Stacey and Dale met Shady he was everything they had been looking for.

“Just before the sale they scanned him to measure carcass qualities and his eye muscle area measured at

143cm2, which at that time was the largest we’d heard of in the breed,” Stacey said.

“He was so balanced and smooth through the front, just everything you want a beef bull to be… and on top of that he’s dead quiet, just a beautiful temperament.”

Through some miscommunication, Dale and Stacey accidentally outbid each other during the sale.

“I put my hand up to bid at $50k, and Dale being outside didn’t know it was me so he bid against me at $60k... I got up out of my seat and ran outside to say ‘that was me’, meanwhile the bidding kept going.

“Dale said ‘he’s the best black bull I’ve seen in the country’.”

So IDSP continued bidding and broke their second world record with a $150,000 bid, the perfect black bull.

VALLEY VIKINGS

HEROIC VIKINGS RETAIN CUP.ers at a team-mate’s wedding, and with injury absentees, the Valley Vikings dug deep to retain the prestigious Lenny Martin Cup. This year, the assignment was much tougher, involving all Ipswich Clubs, Toowoomba Wests, and leading Clubs from Logan and the Gold Coast. Play over the two preceding weekends, with morning andists being determined for Saturday morning, with the Valley Vikings being matched with the powerful Alberton-Ormeau team from the Coast. In a strong bowling display, the Vikings contained Alberton to a getable 8-136, with stand-in Captain Rogan Utz dominating with 4-26. With the pads on, Rogan on 72 n.o and Joey Wallace with 34 got the Vikings to 3-140 with an over to spare. And so, to the after-

again with 91 and Zeke Kugel on 30, steered the Vikings to 5-158. Redbank were gallant in the chase, and, with three balls to go, had closed to 155. They needed only 3 runs to win, but were down to their last wicket. Which fell. Youngsters Hayden Sippel and Dave Kilah each bagged three wickets. A very meritorious win and a tribute to the coaching team of Lenny Martin and Graham Bichel who are raising the performance bar.

VIKINGS STARS SELECTED FOR BULLS MASTERS.

The pinnacle of Queensland Country limited overs cricket is the “Bulls Masters” tournament, played annually in Cairns. Teams are selected from each Queensland region, with the South East Queensland team being drawn from the Gold Coast, Logan and Ipswich competitions. This year’s SEQ team contains three from Ipswich, two of whom represent the Valley Vikings. Brock Zischke, a leading run- getter from 2022/23 and century maker in the Lenny Martin Cup, joins Reggie Hoger, captain of the Valley Vikings and member of the QLD Brahmans, the State Country representative

side. All eyes will be focused on the live-streaming from Friday to follow the fortunes of our top local products.

Rowling achieves international cricketing dream

FERNVALE resident Nicole Rowling has had a childhood dream come true, representing her country in the Australian women’s blind cricket team at the International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA) World Games in Birmingham from August 18 to 27.

Competing against cricketing nations England and India, Rowling helped the Australian side take home a history during the tournament in IBSA World Games Wom-

en’s Blind Cricket history.

Rowling said competing at an international level has always been a major goal, and was selected in the Australian side after just her second season of blind cricket.

“It felt like a dream come true, I always wanted to represent my country when growing up,” she said.

“The experience of competing against England and India was wonderful.”

The Fernvale cricketer said positive result, with the Australian side only having one training session before the start of the tournament and

beating England by seven wickets in the opening round

Rowling said she was excited about the future of women’s blind cricket in Australia and would love to compete for her country again one day.

“Going forward, I’d love to play at the next World Blind Games, and that is a goal of mine to work on over the next four years,” she said.

“There’re no guarantees for myself personally that I will be selected again, but our hope is that we’ll have more young players taking up the sport.”
