Council responds to Inland Rail EIS Lockyer Valley Regional Council have raised five main principles surrounding the Gowrie to Helidon construction of Inland Rail.

In last week’s Ordinary Council meeting, council reviewed their submission to Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) in response to

the Gowrie to Helidon (G2H) draft Environmental Impact Survey (EIS).

The concerns raised in the submission are similar to those submitted regarding the Helidon to Calvert draft EIS. In the written submission, Lockyer Valley Regional Council CEO Ian Church

said the council’s concerns for G2H are long held, but the EIS provides for the first time a significant technical submission for Council to consider and assess.

A major concern raised in the submission is around flood modelling, along with loss of connectivity, amenity

impacts (noise, vibration, light, visual, dust, smell), loss of agricultural land, and promoting integrated transport planning to allow for future passenger rail.

The Queensland and Australian Government jointly established the Independent International Panel of

Experts for Flood Studies of Inland Rail in Queensland to review the flood modelling, but council are questioning the data from the panel’s findings.

“ARTC are relying on this independent panel of experts,” Mr Church said during last week’s meeting.

“That’s where we’re having an issue at the moment, in terms of we don’t necessarily agree with the conclusions that this panel have drawn.”

“We’re highlighting that as an issue, even though we need to respond to the EIS as best we can, we do believe this is an ongoing issue.”

Lockyer Valley SES members honoured for decades of service

Three Lockyer Valley SES volunteers were presented with Meritorious Service awards to mark their years of service at the SES Week Awards in Toowoomba on October 9.

Forest Hill group leader Shane Engel and Gatton leading senior field operations member Mark Sweeney were both recognised for 15 years in the State Emergency Service Annette Fifoot, a lead-

ing senior field operations member at Forest Hill, was recognised for her 20 years of service.

Lockyer Valley deputy local controller Graham Wade said for the members to have a long time commitment to the SES was an achievement.

“They have an interest in doing what we do and helping the community,” he said.

“As cliché as it is, but in a nutshell that’s what we do.”

“We’re here for those times when all hell breaks loose.”

Mr Wade said the service is always looking for new members to bolster numbers.

“Come along on a Monday night, either Gatton, Forest Hill or Laidley, whichever you live closest to,” Mr Wade said.

“There will always be someone there.”

Joey’s legacy for Locky A Laidley artist has found a creative way to help raise funds for a worthy cause.

Marianne Gosen has immortalised Nikita the Eastern Grey Kangaroo in paint, and is selling raffle tickets with the lucky winner taking home the painting.

All the proceeds are for Locky’s Sanctuary, run by David “Locky” Locke and his wife Anita who take in orphaned, sick and injured wildlife.

Nikita’s story is a sad one, but all too common.

Her mother was hit on Laidley Plainland road two years ago and luckily a later passer-by checked the pouch, finding the tiny joey.

Nikita was taken to Locky’s Sanctuary to be cared for and raised, and while she’s since been released back into the wild she often comes back to visit Locky.

Getting to know the young kangaroo inspired Ms Gosen to paint her and help Locky.

“When I was doing home deliveries to Locky’s place, sometimes I’d go in and have a cup of tea and Nikita would be sitting there,” Ms Gosen said.

“I just thought I should paint Nikita and do a raffle.”

Friends Jacqui, Sue, and Linda chipped in, framing the painting and donating a second prize for the raffle.

Ms Gosen hopes to raise $1000 by Christmas and there is always a need for funds at Locky’s Sanctuary.

“There are so many things,” Locky said.

“At the moment I’m reconstructed a massive, walk-in aviary… it will basically go toward this.”

He’s received donations toward work on the aviary but there’s still work to be done.

“Plus the ongoing expenses of feed, it never stops.”

Ms Gosen will sell tickets to the raffle on her usual market rounds.

The raffle will be drawn on Christmas Eve. “He’s come all the way over from England to live here in Laidley, and look what he’s doing,” Ms Gosen said.

“Isn’t that awesome.”

Lockyer to light up this Christmas Lockyer Valley Regional Council is encouraging residents to register for a new, online mapping program that will showcase the very best of the region’s Christmas spirit.

The platform provides details on residences, businesses and commuity groups that have their Christmas light displays open for public viewing.

Lockyer Valley Mayor Tanya Milligan said online and hard copy registration forms would be available from November.

“I am always taken aback by the Christmas lights on display across our region, so many homes really do put so much passion behind their displays and we wanted to find a way to map out the locations of all the participating addresses,” Cr Milligan said.

“While there won’t be a competition this year, we wanted to offer a new platform and focus on spreading Christmas joy right across the Lockyer Valley.

“The Program easily shows where the registered properties are, so families can plan their evenings and get around all that’s on offer.”

Registrations will be live on the interactive map five business days after lodgement.

Registration close on December 5.

A list of registered addresses with ongoing updates will be available on the luvyalockyer website from December 1.

Entry forms will be available from council offices, libraries, visitor information centre, or Lockyer Valley Queensland website.

Bright future for Toogoolawah

Taleah Person, Emily Bickers, Eyre Ward will trade in country life for the city as recipients of University of Queensland Scholarships.

The three Toogoolawah State High School students were recognised at the school’s awards presentations last week.

School captain Taleah won three excellence awards, the ADF Long Tan Leadership Award, and outreach award.

“I’m going to do a dual degree in educa-

tion and business management,” she said.

Emily received two excellence awards in business and general maths, but the academic awards were only the start.

“I got an outstanding achievement award and best all-rounder,” Emily said.

Sports captain Emily helped fundraise for the McGrath Foundation and school formal, she’s a keen volleyball player and age champion in swimming, athletics and cross country.

Her ambition is to be a forensic psychologist.

School captain and swimming and athletics age champion Eyre wants to follow in his granfather’s footsteps and study architecture.

Junior school captains Isaac Green and Mackenzie Brooks were also acknowledged at the awards night, Mackenzie receivingJunior Dux and Isaac the Junior Leadership Award.

Laidley leaders and achievers

Laidley State High School recognised their best and brightest at their Awards Night last week.

Student of the Year went to Tamiara Pollock, who also received special awards in physics and English and a host of subject awards. “[It’s for] having dedication to your school and striving to be the best you can whilst helping everyone,” Tamiara said.

Principal Michael Clarkson said the Student of the Year is somebody involved across school life.

“It’s a combination of academic success, participating in the school, sporting and

cultural activities,” he said.

Ampol Best All Rounder was awarded to Shayana Shepley and she also took home the Tabeel Community Service Award, USQ Excellence Award, special awards in maths and physics, plus subject awards.

Hayley Keats won the Cultural Award and the ADF Long Tan Youth Award.

“I was very surprised,” she said of receiving the special awards.

“My mum was really happy.”

Billy Parr was the recipient of the Citizenship Award and the Australian Olympic Change-Maker Award.

“We have some absolutely wonderful students at our school,” Mr Clarkson said.

“It was so nice to spend the night celebrating, rewarding and recognising not just the students who won the awards but also the families, teachers and staff at school.”

Returning to choir is something to sing about

With relaxed restrictions and Christmas just around the corner, there is certainly something to for everyone to sing about.

Laidley’s Something to Sing About (STSA) choir came back together only a little over a month ago and are busy preparing for the Laidley Christmas carnival and Mulgowie Markets.

Choirmaster Gary Young said the choir of around 30 members is enjoying being back together.

“In the last 18 months, the choir has suffered badly – like everyone else – under COVID, with numbers dropping,” he said.

“We’ve only been back together for the last five weeks, if that.”

Practise is well underway

at their new rehearsal space in the Anglican Church Hall.

Mr Young said new members are welcome to join the choir, especially men.

“We’ve got some good pieces for the men, with props like the Gendarmes

Stout Hearted Men,” Mr Young said.

Performing in retirement villages and nursing homes, Mr Young chooses repertoire based on the audiences.

“I have selections from The Sound of Music to the

Seekers, to give a broad selection of music,” he said.

No experience or audition is necessary, only a desire to sing.

And with things looking up again, there are plenty of things to sing about.

The Utes are back at Laidley Showgrounds Due to lockdowns earlier this year, the Laidley Show was unfortunately cancelled, and with it, the popular Ute Show.

The tenacious Laidley Show Society has pulled out all the stops to get the events rescheduled and keep the 2021 show alive.

The Ute Show will be on at Laidley Showgrounds on November 6.

As the Ekka was also cancelled, the Laidley Ute Show will consist of two ute shows, QCAS Ekka Finals sponsored

by PremiAir Hire and the Laidley full ute show with racing events including Barrel racing, Circle work, Truck pull comp, Flex comp and more.

Laidley Show Society’s Dalray Mccarthy said there had been a great response to the ute show

through social media.

“It should be a great day for the whole family, with not only the ute show but all the extra fun events that go with it,” she said.

There will be an Open Mic for the singers, mullet hair competition judged

by William Davis from Fine Lines Barber, Hair and Beauty, lawn mower races, animal farm, face painting, numerous stalls plus great food on offer.

Tickets for the public are at the gate on the day from 10am, $5 entry and children under 10 years old are free.

Ute nominations are to be in by 12pm on the day, $10 for first class and $3 per extra classes.

Dalray also said the bar will open at 4pm and the night will finish with a fireworks display.

Home-grown dancers shine

Gatton dancers held their own against southeast Queensland competitors at the recent Lockyer District Dancing Festival, with numerous locals taking home major prizes in the eisteddfod.

For 11-year-old Charlie Clarkson, receiving the Lockyer District Dancing Festival Scholarship was an exciting reward to further her dance skills.

“I got the Lockyer District Dancing Festival Scholarship, so I got $500 to spend on dance lessons,” Charlie said.

“I was excited, because I don’t usually get to go to special dance lessons.”

The funds can be spent on workshops or extra classes to further her training.

Melody Cunliss received the Most Promising Song and Dance trophy in addition to the Lockyer District Bursary (Junior) while Isabelle Stibbard was the senior recipient of the Lockyer District Bursary.

The recipients of the bursary have accumulated the highest points from four solos.

Gatton dancers Melody Cunlisse, Kastell Smith, and Charlie Clarkson were among the local dancers who took home top accolades at the Lockyer District Dancing Festival.

“I did probably about 12 solos,” Melody said.

Melody also placed in first in her song and dance championship, her favourite style of dance.

Isabelle, 15, was also awarded Most Outstanding Tap Dancer and the Shirley Tween Most Outstanding Performance

Memorial trophy.

High school student Kastelle Smith impressed the adjudicator with her solo.

“I got the Special Adjudicators Award, it was awarded for my hip-hop solo,” she said.

“To her, it stood out of the solos and it was one of the dances that she remembered.”

Sadie Huston, who at only seven years old has already been dancing most of her life, received the Tiny Tots encouragement award.

Dance Force owner and teacher Sarah Hoyling said the Gatton girls competed well against dancers from the Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast,

Ipswich and beyond in what has been a tumultuous year on the eisteddfod circuit.

“I think there’s been a lot of upset still this year with competitions,” she said.

“They trained really hard and then the week before they would cancel it, so it’s been a bit of a rollercoaster year.”

Young artists explore identity

What is it like being a teenager today?

To get inside their heads and heart, pay a visit to The Condensery art gallery before the Senior Student School Showcases finishes.

The exhibition brings together artwork by senior students from Toowoogla-

wah State High School.

Art and drama teacher Nikiesha Stevenson said the works explore chosen topics in conceptual, modern, and innovative ways.

“The students lead their own investigations,” Ms Stevenson said.

“They set a question at the beginning of the year

and follow it the whole way through.”

“One student’s question was regarding contemporary paranoia and how to represent that in artworks.”

The Condensery curator Rachel Arndt said the works explore issues facing young in today’s world.

Conceptual video work explore the discomfort of being a teenage.

“This exhibition really centres around identity and what it’s like being a teenager in contemporary

society,” she said.

The exhibition is on until October 31.

Grants available for community groups

Round 7 of the Stronger Community grants are now taking applications, with a further $150,000 in funding available for smallscale upgrades and new equipment for community groups.

Federal Member for Wright Scott Buchholz said the grants would deliver the infrastructure and equipment.

“Our Government continues to deliver for our region, in every community across Logan, the Scenic Rim, Lockyer Valley and Gold Coast hinterland,” Mr Buchholz said.

“This latest funding injection will support up to 20 projects across our communities, supporting jobs and delivering an economic boost to drive our recovery on the other side of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This type of investment brings people together by strengthening social connections, building community participation and delivering a brighter and more vibrant future for communities.

“I strongly encourage interested organisations to contact my office regarding projects.”

Grants from $2,500 up to $20,000 are available to cover up to 100 per cent of eligible project costs, or up to 50 per cent of eligible project costs for local governing bodies.

A plan years in the making will come to fruition next month when Mitre 10 Gatton opens its doors.

Plainland Mitre 10 owner Steve Ruhle has been looking to expand into Gatton for five years, since the previous hardware store closed.

“There’s been a lot of work the last three or four months getting this set up,” he said.

The soft opening will be on November 27, with a grand opening planned for early next year.

“We’ll have a sausage sizzle, promo and all sorts of stuff for the soft opening,” Mr Ruhle said.

There will be some familiar faces in the Gatton store, with Plainland Mitre 10 staff coming to the new store.

“Some of the experienced staff will be moving to here,” Mr Ruhle said.

“We see it as an opportunity here.

“We’ve been servicing the Lockyer Valley for 30 odd years, through fires and floods.

“We want to continue to support the community and we hope the community will support us.”

The store will stock wellknown brands customers have come to expect from their local hardware store, like Stihl, Makita, Stanely, FatMax, plus Weber barbecues and a Dulux

and Wattyl paint range.

“There may be some things that we don’t have in store, but they can buy them here and we can deliver them from the Plainland store,” he said.

“We’ll have trucks or utes going between the two stores daily.”

And while the trades section won’t be entirely complete by the time of the soft opening, when it’s completely ready in February it will be

extensive.

With as much floor space dedicated to trades as retail, Mr Ruhle is optimistic his team can service all their tradies needs.

Legacy of Gatton The long-awaited exhumation of the Apex Time Capsule will take place this Saturday in Gatton.

In 1986, the Gatton Apex club began construction on the barbecue shelter at Lake Apex.

Life member Bill Hallas said the club was active in constructing projects that would benefit the community.

“Once the lake was established, we felt we had an obligation to create something,” Mr Hallas said.

To raise funds, the club invited the public to purchase a brick at $20 each.

Their names or businesses were engraved on the brick and used in the construction of the barbecue shelter.

Ingredients Serves 4-6 people l Carrot l Celery l Onion l Broccoli head and stem l Garlic l 2 tins of diced tomatoes

l 1 tab Dried herbs (I like basil, oregano, rosemary) l 1 tsp Smoked paprika l Meat (mince or meat balls) l Good drizzle of Balsamic vinegar and or red wine

Method

1. Prepare the ingredients (finely chopped or grated - if using for ‘hidden veg’) 2. Heat oil in pan 3. Brown meat balls then remove from pan 4. Sautée vegetables and add garlic 5. Once vegetables are softened add the diced tomatoes 6. Turn down then heat, stir.

7. Add the dried herbs and paprika 8. Allow the mixture to slowly and gently bubble for approx 20mins 9. Add the meat and continue to cook for a further 15mins or until the meat is cooked through (the longer the sauce is cooked the richer the flavour).

10. In the final 5 minutes of cooking add the balsamic vinegar/red wine Serve with pasta and shaved Parmesan cheese.

Veggie growers productivity boost Lockyer Valley growers are set to benefit from the next generation of a national extension program aimed to boost productivity and deliver the latest research and development on-farm.

The new $14.1M VegNET 3.0 program is being delivered through Hort Innovation using vegetable industry levies and funds from the Australian Government, and led

by Australia’s peak vegetable industry body AUSVEG. Hort Innovation Chief Executive Matt Brand said the initiative represents the single largest research and development investment in the vegetable growing sector’s history, and it’s anchored on best-practice and what the industry has identified as

510 head of grain fed, crop/ pasture and feeder cattle came to hand, with the competition extremely strong.

Champion trade beast was awarded to D, C & A Knopke with a Limousin x heifer selling for 524.2c/kg to return $2568.58.

Champion Grass fed exhibit was awarded to the Thompson Bro’s of Kingaroy with a Charbray steers weighing 780kgs selling for 449.2c/kg to return $3503.76.

Champion single export grain fed exhibit went to GS & DF Agent & sons of Blackbutt with a Brahmousin steer selling for 470.0c/ kg, weighing 755kgs to return $3548.50/head.

Champion grain fed pen of the show was won by Kingsford Farms of Warwick with a pen of six Charolais cross Droughtmaster steers, bred by the Eggleston family of Toogoolawah. The pen of steers averaged 671kgs, selling for 494.0c/kg to return

Landcare Festival The Kilcoy Landcare is hosting a festival at the Linville Hall on Novermber 6 to raise awareness on recovery after bushfire, restoring plant and animal biodiversity and managing weeds after a fire.

After Linville and its surroundings were significantly affected by the 2019 summer fires, the secretary of the Kilcoy Landcare, Sue Cawcutt, said bushfire recovery can take a long time.

“The festival will be an opportunity for community members to network, hear from expert speakers about fire prevention and recovery and enjoy live music and a local morning tea,” Ms Cawcutt said.

“Recovery from a bushfire is more than the recovery of the bush, farm infrastructure and threatened species habitat, it’s also economic, social and psychological recovery that is

Support for storm affected farmers Farmers impacted by hail and storm damage can apply for state government assistance.

Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries and Minister for Rural communities Mark Furner said this week’s severe storms across Queensland were a timely reminder the Queensland environment can prove quite a challenge for the state’s farmers.

“There have been reports of hail, heavy rain and even tornados,” he said “Any producer that has been impacted by these events can apply for an Individual Disaster Stricken Property (IDSP) declaration.

“This declaration gives producers access to freight subsidies of up to $5,000, as well as Disaster Assistance loans of up to $250,000 at a concessional interest rate to help fix damaged infrastructure such as fences, sheds and hail netting.

“You don’t have to wait for a disaster to be declared by state or federal authorities—if your agribusiness has been affected by storms and if you need assistance, you should consider applying for an IDSP.” Mr Furner said applying for IDSP declarations was as simple as contacting the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF).

Cohen takes BMW for a spin Introducing Cohen Ryder, a 13-year-old Faith Lutheran college student who is passionate about discovering and investigating new cars.

This week Cohen reviews the BMW M135i Sport.

Exterior Design 8/10 I personally believe BMW has done a great job of styling the 1 series. A few things I really liked about it are the front grill had inserts that were a bronze type of colour.

Nice curves, very clean design.

Interior Design 7.5/10

The interior is well designed; the infotainment is close to the driver so it’s easy to choose different options. The driver’s display is digital and easy to see. All buttons are at your fingertips for easy reach. The M135i Sport has an iDrive dial to access the infotainment screen.

Engine/Performance 8/10 Engine is well punchy and exciting when you give it some power, great torque after a quick start. When sport mode is engaged the two

exhausts make some crackle and pops. Our test car had 225Kw/450Nm as well with a 1,988cc four cylinder engine.

Fuel Efficiency 7/10 Fuel consumption is ok. It’s a bit thirsty for a four cylinder.

Will roughly get 8 to 9 litres depending how you drive.

ANCAP Safety 7/10 The BMW has standard across the range dual front air bags, side seat airbags, curtain airbags. Autonomous emergency braking and lane keep assisting as standard.

Massive race day for Kilcoy The Kilcoy Race Club is anticipating big entries for the Aquis Farms QTIS Three-year-old Maiden for the debut of the new 1200 metres chute on Friday.

The race day takes place on the rescheduled Exhibition holiday of October 29 for Brisbane, Moreton Bay and Scenic Rim. Kilcoy Race Club chairman Con Searle said he was excited to welcome visitors from these regions.

“I think we will draw a lot of people from those areas where there is a public holiday,” he said.

“We have free entry to the course, the famous Kilcoy steak sandwich and eight races.

“It will be exciting to see the new chute used for the first time for the 1200 and 1100 metre races.”

Connections of the winner of the Maiden will win a free service to the

Pierro-sired Bellevue Hill, who is currently serving his second season at the Aquis breeding and racing centre at Canungra.

His current service fee is $6000.

“The QTIS bonuses are always a drawcard for connections and these new 1200 metres start will mean the barrier draw is not as crucial,” Mr Searle said.

“It will be a very fair starting position.”

Kilcoy Race Club debuts the new 1200 metres chute on Friday.

Lowood Rodeo Success Rain and an afternoon thunderstorm did not deter the crowd from arriving in huge numbers to the Lowood Rodeo at the Lowood Showgrounds last Saturday night.

People and cars were lined up at the gate waiting to get in as a record crowd rolled in to watch the proceedings.

All of the usual rodeo events were on display with competitors coming from as far away as Darwin to compete.

The Lowood Show Society and the large number of community groups were happy to see the return of the rodeo which, like most events, did not happen last year.

The women’s calf roping was hotly contested.
